The interaction of the antimicrobial drug norfloxacin (NFX) with anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles was studied using the intrinsic spectroscopic properties of NFX to obtain association constants and molecular modifications. Nonionic Tween® 20 micelles were also investigated, but the spectroscopic properties of NFX did not detect interactions with these micelles, and quenching by iodide suggested a weak association constant around 47 M?1. For SDS and CTAB, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved fluorometry were monitored as a function of surfactant concentration ranging from the premicellar to micellar region. It was found that cationic (pH 4.0) and zwitterionic NFX (pH 7.4) associate with SDS micelles, with binding constants equal to 5.4 × 103 and 1.7 × 103 M?1, respectively. Premicellar interaction slightly decreases the critical micelle concentration of SDS. Association of anionic NFX (pH 10.6) is very weak. The fluorescence spectrum and lifetime showed that SDS-associated NFX is cationic and that the heterocycle penetrates the interfacial environment of decreased polarity. Cationic CTAB micelles do not bind cationic NFX, and the association constant with zwitterionic NFX is two orders of magnitude lower than that of SDS micelles. From a pharmacological point of view, it is important that at neutral pH, NFX presented a two orders of magnitude higher affinity for anionic than for cationic sites, and did not interact significantly with nonionic or zwitterionic micelle interfaces.  相似文献

Luminescent heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complexes of type RuLnX3–n [L = 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen), X = 4,7 diphenyl phenanthroline disulfonate, (dpsphen) n = 0,1,2,3] were synthesized and their photophysical properties investigated in homogeneous and cationic (CTAB), anionic (SDS) and nonionic (Triton X‐100) micelles. The luminescent quantum yield and lifetime of the complexes were found to increase in the presence of micellar media and on the introduction of a disulfonate ligand into the coordination sphere. Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions play an important role in the micellar media. Thus, by changing the nature of the ligands and the medium, we were able to tune the photophysical properties of Ru(II) complexes. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Neurodegenerative disorders are mainly associated with amyloid fibril formation of different proteins. Stem bromelain (SB), a cysteine protease, is known to exist as a molten globule state at pH 10.0. It passes through the identical surrounding (pH 10.0) in the gut epithelium of intestine upon oral administration. Protein–surfactant complexes are widely employed as drug carriers, so the nature of surfactant toward protein is of great interest. The present work describes the effect of cationic surfactants (CTAB & DTAB) and their hydrophobic behavior toward amyloidogenesis behavior of SB at pH 10.0. Multiple approaches including light scattering, far UV-CD, turbidity measurements, and dye binding assay (ThT, Congo red and ANS) were performed to measure the aggregation propensity of SB. Further, we monitored the hydrodynamic radii of aggregates formed using dynamic light scattering technique. Structure of fibrils was also visualized through fluorescence microscopy as well as TEM. At pH 10.0, low concentration of CTAB (0–200 μM) induced amyloid formation in SB as evident from a prominent increase in turbidity and light scattering, gain in β-sheet content, and enhanced ThT fluorescence intensity. However, further increase in CTAB concentration suppressed the fibrillation phenomenon. In contrast, DTAB did not induce fibril formation at any concentration used (0–500 μM) due to lower hydrophobicity. Net negative charge developed on protein at high pH (10.0) might have facilitated amyloid formation at low concentration of cationic surfactant (CTAB) due to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions.  相似文献

Dilution of protein–surfactant complexes is an integrated step in microfluidic protein sizing, where the contribution of free micelles to the overall fluorescence is reduced by dilution. This process can be further improved by establishing an optimum surfactant concentration and quantifying the amount of protein based on the fluorescence intensity. To this end, we study the interaction of proteins with anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) using a hydrophobic fluorescent dye (sypro orange). We analyze these interactions fluourometrically with bovine serum albumin, carbonic anhydrase, and beta‐galactosidase as model proteins. The fluorescent signature of protein–surfactant complexes at various dilution points shows three distinct regions, surfactant dominant, breakdown, and protein dominant region. Based on the dilution behavior of protein–surfactant complexes, we propose a fluorescence model to explain the contribution of free and bound micelles to the overall fluorescence. Our results show that protein peak is observed at 3 mM SDS as the optimum dilution concentration. Furthermore, we study the effect of protein concentration on fluorescence intensity. In a single protein model with a constant dye quantum yield, the peak height increases with protein concentration. Finally, addition of CTAB to the protein–SDS complex at mole fractions above 0.1 shifts the protein peak from 3 mM to 4 mM SDS. The knowledge of protein–surfactant interactions obtained from these studies provides significant insights for novel detection and quantification techniques in microfluidics.  相似文献

Useful materials can be made from cycloamylose (CA) and the functional properties of CA could be improved by complexation with surfactants. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was used to investigate interactions between CA and surfactants in buffered solutions. Three surfactants with C12 non-polar tail groups and charged [anionic: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); cationic: dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] or non-charged headgroups [non-ionic: polyoxyethylene 23 lauryl ether (Brij35)] were used in this study. The effects of temperature, pH, and salt concentration were also studied. All three surfactants bound to CA; however, Brij35 binding to CA was negligible. Enthalpy changes associated with binding of surfactants to CA were exothermic except for interactions measured at 50 °C. There was no effect of pH on surfactant demicellization or CA binding. Salt concentration affected surfactant demicellization, but the amount of SDS bound to CA at saturation was unaffected by salt. When the titration curves obtained for CA with SDS and DTAB were fitted, it could be analyzed using a model based on a single set of identical sites.  相似文献

Electrostatic interactions play a crucial role in modulating and stabilizing molecular interactions in membranes and membrane-mimetic systems such as micelles. We have monitored the change in the conformation and dynamics of the cationic hemolytic peptide melittin bound to micelles of various charge types, utilizing fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The sole tryptophan of melittin displays a red-edge excitation shift (REES) of 3-6 nm when bound to anionic, nonionic, and zwitterionic micelles. This suggests that melittin is localized in a restricted environment, probably in the interfacial region of the micelles, and this region offers considerable restriction to the reorientational motion of the solvent dipoles around the excited state tryptophan in melittin. Further, the rotational mobility of melittin is considerably reduced in these micelles and is found to be dependent on the surface charge of micelles. Interestingly, our results show that melittin does not partition into cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles owing to electrostatic repulsion between melittin and CTAB micelles, both of which carry a positive charge. In addition, the fluorescence lifetime of melittin is modulated in micelles of different charge types. The lowest mean fluorescence lifetime is observed in the case of melittin bound to anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles. CD spectroscopy shows that micelles induce significant helicity to melittin, with maximum helicity being induced in the case of melittin bound to SDS micelles. Fluorescence quenching measurements using the neutral aqueous quencher acrylamide show differential accessibility of melittin in various types of micelles. Taken together, our results show that micellar surface charge can modulate the conformation and dynamics of melittin. These results could be relevant to understanding the role of the surface charge of membranes in the interaction of membrane-active, amphiphilic peptides with membranes.  相似文献

The effect of surfactants (two cationic, one anionic and three non-ionic) at 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 % concentrations on aflatoxin production, ergosterol content and sugar consumption by Aspergillus parasiticus (NRRL 2999) in YES liquid culture medium is reported. At 0.01% concentration, the cationic surfactants, cetyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (CDAB) and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), and the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), completely inhibited spore germination, while DTAB also inhibited the production of ergosterol and toxin (p < 0.05). At a concentration of 0.001%, CDAB was found to enhance toxin production, while SDS was found to inhibit it when compared with other surfactants. Non-ionic surfactants, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20), polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Brij-35) and ethoxylated p-tert-octylphenol (Triton X-100) delayed the spore germination up to day 5 at all concentrations and inhibited toxin and ergosterol production at 0.001% concentration. The affect was found to be dose-dependent from 0.001% to 1%, for Triton X-100 only. Positive correlation between ergosterol content and toxin production in the presence of different surfactants at various time periods (3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 days) was found. Tween-20 was most effective in inhibiting toxin production on day 7, when aflatoxin production was found to be maximal in control group. Sugar consumption was directly proportional to the ergosterol content, showing a significant correlation with aflatoxin production.  相似文献

The study of fluorescence quenching of the fluorophores allows the localization of the alkaloids (harmane and harmine) in the micelles (SDS, CTAB, Brij-35) to be established. In aqueous micellar solutions (SDS and Brij-35) at pH 13.0, emission corresponding to the neutral or zwitterionic forms can be observed. In the presence of CTAB (pH = 13.0) it was possible to observe the emission of anionic form. These species are not present in buffered aqueous solutions at these pH values. Bromide ion was added to the different surfactant solutions and the quenching effect was studied according to the Stern-Volmer equation. In the presence of SDS the quenching effect is considerably reduced compared to the aqueous solutions without surfactants, while for Brij-35 micelles were similar to those observed in homogeneous aqueous solution. For CTAB micelles a notable fluorescence quenching was observed for the different pH values studied. The fluorescence quenching studies show that the neutral species are associated inside the micelles, instead of the ionic species (cationic, zwitterionic or anionic) remaining on the surface of the micelles. The anionic surface of SDS micelles prevents the quenching effect by anionic quenchers for both neutral and charged species.  相似文献

Synchronous and excitation emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) characteristics of humic acid–surfactant interaction have been studied. The variation of synchronous and EEMF spectral maxima and intensities with humic acid (HA)–cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) composition sensitively reflects the extent of flocculation of HA. It was found that the concentration range for co‐precipitation of HA–CTAB was similar for all concentrations (60 p.p.m., 80 p.p.m. and 100 p.p.m.) of humic acid studied. In the concentration range 60–150 p.p.m. of humic acid, the EEMF maximum is found at 460/540 nm, indicating the presence of ligneous materials. Fluorescence intensity measurement at this contour excitation/emission wavelength (460/540 nm) is suggested as a convenient and a sensitive method for studying the physical state of humic acid in the presence of cationic surfactants. No significant interaction of HA with sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and TX‐100 was found. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effect of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulphate or SDS) and cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or CTAB) surfactants on the stability of binary bacterial coaggregates comprising Acinetobacter johnsonii S35 and Oligotropha carboxidovorans S23 (both sewage sludge isolates) was studied and compared with that on the complex sewage sludge flocs. Both SDS and CTAB enhanced the bacterial coaggregation at their lower concentrations of 0.2 and 0.07 mg ml(-1), respectively. However, complete deflocculation of coaggregates was observed at 1 mg ml(-1) SDS and 0.3 mg l(-1) CTAB concentrations. Further, sewage sludge flocs did not deflocculate in the presence of CTAB, although a concentration-dependent deflocculation was observed in the presence of SDS. A. johnsonii S35 and O. carboxidovorans S23 cells were separately pretreated (prior to coaggregation) with the surfactants. In spite of the partial (complete) loss of viability during SDS (CTAB) pretreatment, washed cells still retained hydrophobic character and displayed significant coaggregation (aggregation index ranging from 84% to 97% in comparison to 96% in the case of non-treated cells), demonstrating reversibility of the surfactant induced deflocculation. Further, when exposed to lower concentration of surfactants (0.2 mg ml(-1) SDS), coaggregates were more resistant (76% viability) as compared to the individual partner (S35: 52%; S23: 39% viability). Since the coaggregates are stable and provide protection from surfactants at lower concentrations (those normally expected in the sewage treatment plants), their presence as well as a sustained role in the sewage sludge bioflocculation is evident.  相似文献

A structural investigation of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-induced fibrillation of α-synuclein (αSN), a 140-amino-acid protein implicated in Parkinson's disease, has been performed. Spectroscopic analysis has been combined with isothermal titration calorimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy to elucidate a fibrillation pathway that is remarkably different from the fibrillation pathway in the absence of SDS. Fibrillation occurs most extensively and most rapidly (starting within 45 min) under conditions where 12 SDS molecules are bound per αSN molecule, which is also the range where SDS binding is associated with the highest enthalpy. Fibrillation is only reduced in proportion to the fraction of SDS below 25 mol% SDS in mixed surfactant mixtures with nonionic surfactants and is inhibited by formation of bulk micelles and induction of α-helical structure. In this fibrillogenic complex, 4 αSN molecules initially associate with 40-50 SDS molecules to form a shared micelle that gradually grows in size. The complex initially exhibits a mixture of random coil and α-helix, but incubation results in a structural conversion into β-sheet structure and concomitant formation of thioflavin-T-binding fibrils over a period of several hours. Based on small-angle X-ray scattering, the aggregates elongate as a beads-on-a-string structure in which individual units of ellipsoidal SDS-αSN are bridged by strings of the protein, so that aggregates nucleate around the surface of protein-stabilized micelles. Thus, fibrillation in this case occurs by a process of continuous accretion rather than by the rate-limiting accumulation of a distinct nucleus. The morphology of the SDS-induced fibrils does not exhibit the classical rod-like structures formed by αSN when aggregated by agitation in the absence of SDS. The SDS-induced fibrils have a flexible worm-like appearance, which can be converted into classical straight fibrils by continuous agitation. SDS-induced fibrillation represents an alternative and highly reproducible mechanism for fibrillation where protein association is driven by the formation of shared micelles, which subsequently allows the formation of β-sheet structures that presumably link individual micelles. This illustrates that protein fibrillation may occur by remarkably different mechanisms, testifying to the versatility of this process.  相似文献

Mixed micelles of l,2-diheptanoyl-sn-grycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC) with ionic detergents were prepared to develop well characterized substrates for the study of lipolytic enzymes. The aggregates that formed on mixing DHPC with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and with the positively charged dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) were investigated using time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ) to determine the aggregation numbers and bimolecular collision rates, and electron spin resonance (ESR) to measure the hydration index and microviscosity of the micelles at the micelle-water interface. Mixed micelles between the phospholipid and each of the detergents formed in all compositions, yielding interfaces with varying charge, hydration, and microviscosity. Both series of micelles were found to be globular up to 0.7 mole fraction of DHPC, while the aggregation numbers varied within the same concentration range of the components less than 15%. Addition of the zwitterionic phospholipid component increased the degree of counterion dissociation as measured by the quenching of the fluorescence of pyrene by the bromide ions bound to DHPC/DTAB micelles, showing that at 0.6 mole fraction of DHPC 80% of the bromide ions are dissociated from the micelles. The interface water concentration decreased significantly on addition of DHPC to each detergent. For combined phospholipid and detergent concentration of 50 mM the interface water concentration decreased, as measured by ESR of the spin-probes, from 38.5 M/L of interface volume in SDS alone to 9 M/L when the phospholipid was present at 0.7 mole fraction. Similar addition of DHPC to DTAB decreased the interfacial water concentration from 27 M/L to 11 M/L. Determination of the physicochemical parameters of the phospholipid containing mixed micelles here presented are likely to provide important insight into the design of assay systems for kinetic studies of phospholipid metabolizing enzymes.  相似文献

In this contribution, we study the effect of confinement on the ultrafast electron transfer (ET) dynamics of riboflavin binding protein (RBP) to the bound cofactor riboflavin (Rf, vitamin B2), an important metabolic process, in anionic sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate reverse micelles (AOT‐RMs) of various hydration levels. Notably, in addition to excluded volume effect, various nonspecific interactions like ionic charge of the confining surface can influence the biochemical reactions in the confined environment of the cell. To this end, we have also studied the ET dynamics of RBP–Rf complex under the confinement of a cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) RMs with similar water pool size to the anionic AOT‐RMs towards simulating equal restricted volume effect. It has been found that the spatial confinement of RBP in the AOT‐RM of w0 = 10 leads to the loss of its tertiary structure and hence vitamin binding capacity. Although, RBP regains its binding capacity and tertiary structure in AOT‐RMs of w0 ≥20 due to its complete hydration, the ultrafast ET from RBP to Rf merely occurs in such systems. However, to our surprise, the ET process is found to occur in cationic CTAB‐RMs of similar volume restriction. It is found that under the spatial confinement of anionic AOT‐RM, the isoalloxazine ring of Rf is improperly placed in the protein nanospace so that ET between RBP and Rf is not permitted. This anomaly in the binding behaviour of Rf to RBP in AOT‐RMs is believed to be the influence of repulsive potential of the anionic AOT‐RM surface to the protein. Our finding thus suggests that under similar size restriction, both the hydration and surface charge of the confining volume could have major implication in the intraprotein ET dynamics in real cellular environments. The interactions of hemoglobin (Hb) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) are investigated by several methods. We observed the formation of hemichrome below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of surfactant and the release of heme from Hb above the cmc. When pH value of Hb/surfactant system is lower than isoelectric point (pI) of Hb, the interaction of SDS with Hb is both electrostatic and hydrophobic, while the interaction of DTAB with Hb is hydrophobic mainly. On the contrary, when pH > pI, the interaction of SDS with Hb is hydrophobic mainly, while the interaction of DTAB with Hb is both electrostatic and hydrophobic. In the case where both the electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction exist, the electrostatic interaction plays a more important role. Thus, SDS tends to interact with Hb more obviously than DTAB does when pH < pI and the interaction between DTAB and Hb is stronger when pH > pI.  相似文献

A novel optical activity of lutein was studied in dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) solution by the measurement of circular dichroism and absorbance. The surfactant was found to bring about the circular dichroism activity of the lutein below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) in a different way from that by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). This phenomenon was interpreted by the card-pack model of the lutein aggregate in which lutein molecule was slightly shifted each other. The above optical activity abruptly became strong just before the CMC of DTAB. This seems to correspond to the transition from the polymeric aggregate of the lutein to the oligomeric one. Such an optical activity disappeared beyond the CMC on the incorporation of the lutein molecules into the surfactant micelles. The molar binding ratios of DTAB to the lutein were determined to be 130 to 210 on the basis of the lutein concentration dependence of the DTAB concentration showing the arbitrary ellipticity. These ratios were clearly larger than those for SDS. On the other hand, filtration measurement showed that the size of the lutein-DTAB complex was larger than 2 μm in diameter. These phenomena were discussed assuming the possible model of the aggregate as a comparative study of the anionic and cationic surfactants causing the novel optical activity of this aggregate.  相似文献

Inhibition of Aflatoxin Production by Surfactants   总被引:5,自引:3,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
The effect of 12 surfactants on aflatoxin production, growth, and conidial germination by the fungus Aspergillus flavus is reported. Five nonionic surfactants, Triton X-100, Tergitol NP-7, Tergitol NP-10, polyoxyethylene (POE) 10 lauryl ether, and Latron AG-98, reduced aflatoxin production by 96 to 99% at 1% (wt/vol). Colony growth was restricted by the five nonionic surfactants at this concentration. Aflatoxin production was inhibited 31 to 53% by lower concentrations of Triton X-100 (0.001 to 0.0001%) at which colony growth was not affected. Triton X-301, a POE-derived anionic surfactant, had an effect on colony growth and aflatoxin production similar to that of the five POE-derived nonionic surfactants. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, a cationic surfactant, suppressed conidial germination at 1% (wt/vol). SDS had no effect on aflatoxin production or colony growth at 0.001%. The degree of aflatoxin inhibition by a surfactant appears to be a function of the length of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains of POE-derived surfactants.  相似文献

The three commonly used surfactants viz. anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cationic cetyl tri methyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and non-ionic triton X-100 were toxic even at sub lethal levels (1 ppm for 30 days) to 0. mossambicus. Lysosomal stability index (LSI) was lowest in triton-exposed animals in vitro. In vivo, CTAB was the most toxic. SDS, the anionic surfactant was the least toxic. The possible role of surfactant structure, critical micellar concentration (CMC) and metabolism in influencing the toxicity is discussed and mechanism of action via membrane lipid peroxidation is suggested.  相似文献

Protein aggregation into oligomers and mature fibrils are associated with more than 20 diseases in humans. The interactions between cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) with varying alkyl chain lengths and bovine liver catalase (BLC) were examined by various biophysical approaches. The delicate coordination of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with protein, play imperative role in aggregation. In this article, we have reconnoitered the relation between charge, hydrophobicity and cationic surfactants DTAB and TTAB on BLC at pH 7.4 and 9.4 which are two and four units above pI, respectively. We have used techniques like turbidity, Rayleigh light scattering, far-UV CD, ThT, ANS, Congo red binding assay, DLS, and transmission electron microscopy. The low concentration ranges of DTAB (0–600 μM) and TTAB (0–250 μM) were observed to increase aggregation at pH 9.4. Nevertheless, at pH 7.4 only TTAB was capable of inducing aggregate. DTAB did not produce any significant change in secondary structure at pH 7.4 suggestive of the role of respective charges on surfactants and protein according to the pI and alkyl chain length. The morphology of aggregates was further determined by TEM, which proved the existence of a fibrillar structure. The surfactants interaction with BLC was primarily electrostatic as examined by ITC. Our work demystifies the critical role of charge as well as hydrophobicity in amyloid formation.  相似文献

Corneal dystrophies are genetic disorders resulting in progressive corneal clouding due to the deposition of amyloid fibrils derived from keratoepithelin, also called transforming growth factor β-induced protein (TGFBI). The formation of amyloid fibrils is often accelerated by surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Most eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride (BAC), a cationic surfactant, as a preservative substance. In the present study, we aimed to reveal the role of BAC in the amyloid fibrillation of keratoepithelin-derived peptides in vitro. We used three types of 22-residue synthetic peptides covering Leu110-Glu131 of the keratoepithelin sequence: an R-type peptide with wild-type R124, a C-type peptide with C124 associated with lattice corneal dystrophy type I, and a H-type peptide with H124 associated with granular corneal dystrophy type II. The time courses of spontaneous amyloid fibrillation and seed-dependent fibril elongation were monitored in the presence of various concentrations of BAC or SDS using thioflavin T fluorescence. BAC and SDS accelerated the fibrillation of all synthetic peptides in the absence and presence of seeds. Optimal acceleration occurred near the CMC, which suggests that the unstable and dynamic interactions of keratoepithelin peptides with amphipathic surfactants led to the formation of fibrils. These results suggest that eye drops containing BAC may deteriorate corneal dystrophies and that those without BAC are preferred especially for patients with corneal dystrophies.  相似文献

In this work, the dewatering of activated sludge assisted by cationic surfactants was investigated. Dose of dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) resulted in the release of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge and decrease in sludge negative charge. The surfactants significantly promoted sludge dewaterability, as reflected by decreased specific resistance of filtration (SRF) and water content in sludge cakes. The treated sludge were analyzed by combined use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. CTAB was found more effective in releasing bound water from sludge than DTAB, due to its superior surface activity and strong adsorption/bridge capacities with sludge. The specific surface area and pore size of sludge cakes declined after surfactant treatment, indicating an enhanced compressibility. With these results, the surfactant-assisted dewatering mechanism could be attributed to the integrated effects of electrostatic neutralization, enhanced compaction and release of EPS and bound water. Our study clearly characterizes the accelerated dewatering process assisted by cationic surfactants, and demonstrates that cationic surfactants could be used as a potential agent for sludge dewatering.  相似文献
