Studies on specific features of nesting bird populations in patchy landscapes were performed in Meshchovsk Opolye, Kaluga Region, from 1981 to 1990. Indices of similarity between the avifaunas of farmlands, lowland bogs, and small-leaved forests markedly differed in rank and value from corresponding indices for parameters of their population density. In the series of biotopes differing in the relative amount of woodland, from central areas of small-leaved forests to forest margins and then to forest islands gradually decreasing in size, the birds segregated into two distinct groups, one characteristic of forest margins and large forest islands and the other characteristic of small and very small forest islands. Specific features of bird density distribution in forest-meadow-field landscapes of Meshchovsk Opolye reflected heterogeneity of their populations with respect to connections with nesting biotopes.  相似文献

Distribution of black grouse and hazel grouse was evaluated on the basis of the results of bird counts from July 16 to August 31, 1959–2005 over all natural geographical zones and subzones of West Siberia (with fractioning down to the type of landscape tract). Data averaging over groups of vegetation map units (dynamic series) and other specific averaging procedures revealed that black grouse is common in northern-, middle-, and southern-taiga bogs; in subtaiga pine forests; in grassy bogs combined with halophytic meadows within the boundaries of subtaiga forests and the northern forest-steppe; and in agricultural lands in the northern forest-steppe. Hazel grouse is numerous in southern-taiga and dark coniferous middle-taiga forests and their derivatives. The number of hazel grouse individuals in these habitats is larger than in other lands. In general, over the subzones, both black grouse and hazel grouse are most numerous in the middle and southern taiga and in subtaiga forests. To the north and to the south of these subzones, the abundance of these species decreases. They were not encountered in tundras and some open forest-steppe and steppe habitats.  相似文献

The southern coast of Baikal is characterized by the most humid climate in the Baikal region. Precipitation falls mainly on summer, thus reducing the actual of fire occurrence in mountain forests of the region. However, since 1989 the fire occurrence has been increased and disastrous crown fires have become more frequent, especially in the west. It is shown that fire occurrence is a function of the number, duration of rainless periods and monthly sums of rain precipitation, which have large amplitude of changes from year to year. Progressive pyrogenic successions in dark coniferous forests take place mostly without usual replacement by small-leaved tree species at the expense of successful regeneration of Pinus sibirica (in the western Khamar-Daban mountains) and Abies sibirica (in the central part) on the burnt areas during 15–25 years.

Species groupings formed in dark coniferous forests of southeastern Russia are analyzed by the example of butterflies. The species and chorological composition of these groupings are discussed. Classification analysis of species checklists for twelve local faunas is given. It is indicated that the applicability of a single faunistic category to all the dark coniferous forests of the studied region is doubtful.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a study of wintering bird communities across a wide range of coniferous, broadleaved and mixed forest stands in the Forest of Dean, western England. Bird communities of broadleaved and coniferous woodland differed with respect to their species composition. The mean number of individual birds recorded increased linearly with woodland age and was not influenced by woodland type, stand size or the presence of grazing. Woodland age and type and the presence or absence of grazing all significantly influenced bird species richness and the proportions of the bird community made up by granivores, insectivores and omnivores. Broadleaved stands held more species than coniferous stands. Ungrazed stands held significantly more species, particularly seed-eating species, than grazed stands and this effect was independent of woodland type. Ordination was used to relate variation in tree species composition and stand structure to bird community composition. A larger number of species was associated with broadleaved stands and stands with abundant undergrowth than was associated with coniferous stands or stands with little undergrowth. Woodland age had less effect on bird community composition than the extent of undergrowth and the conifer to broadleaf ratio. The results of this work have relevance to the enhancement of winter bird communities in commercial forests.  相似文献

Basing on published data, authors estimate the current state and tendencies in the development of man-transformed floras. Special attention is given to the flora of cities and such man-transformed habitats, as open-cast mines, dumps, hydrotechnical constructions and railway embankments. Floras of man-made forests and plant communities of cultivated lands were also analyzed. Structure of urbanized landscapes are considered as the aggregates of man-transformed landscapes with fragments of natural vegetation. Floras of urbanized areas are characterized by high species diversity, inconsistency of species composition and diminishing influence of natural vegetation characteristic for particulate zone. Species variety and structure of floras of man-transformed habitats depend on specificity of substrate, geographical latitude, neighboring natural communities and intensity of technical plants exploitation. In the floras of railway embankments species of 10 main families are more abundant then those in natural ecosystems of the same latitude. Floras of man-made forests are characterized by very high species diversity, this type of habitats plays the main compensating role. Analysis of segetal floras reveals the replacement of oligotrophic weeds by eutrophic ones and the increase in diversity of Poaceae species.  相似文献

A major conservation challenge in mosaic landscapes is to understand how trait‐specific responses to habitat edges affect bird communities, including potential cascading effects on bird functions providing ecosystem services to forests, such as pest control. Here, we examined how bird species richness, abundance and community composition varied from interior forest habitats and their edges into adjacent open habitats, within a multi‐regional sampling scheme. We further analyzed variations in Conservation Value Index (CVI), Community Specialization Index (CSI) and functional traits across the forest‐edge‐open habitat gradient. Bird species richness, total abundance and CVI were significantly higher at forest edges while CSI peaked at interior open habitats, i.e., furthest from forest edge. In addition, there were important variations in trait‐ and species‐specific responses to forest edges among bird communities. Positive responses to forest edges were found for several forest bird species with unfavorable conservation status. These species were in general insectivores, understorey gleaners, cavity nesters and long‐distance migrants, all traits that displayed higher abundance at forest edges than in forest interiors or adjacent open habitats. Furthermore, consistently with predictions, negative edge effects were recorded in some forest specialist birds and in most open‐habitat birds, showing increasing densities from edges to interior habitats. We thus suggest that increasing landscape‐scale habitat complexity would be beneficial to declining species living in mosaic landscapes combining small woodlands and open habitats. Edge effects between forests and adjacent open habitats may also favor bird functional guilds providing valuable ecosystem services to forests in longstanding fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Based on materials collected during continuous year-round strip censuses, the spatial heterogeneity of bird communities in coniferous and deciduous forests of the Northern Volga region was analyzed for the first time and the key factors determining it were identified. A spatial-temporal classification of bird communities of the study area was made, and a quantitative estimate of the strength and generality of the relationship between the spatial heterogeneity of bird communities and environmental factors is given. The spatial-temporal structure of bird communities is mainly determined by forest cover, seasonal variation in heat supply, tree species composition, build-up area, and relief.  相似文献

Large areas of tropical moist forests have been converted to cattle pastures, generating complex landscapes where different habitats are represented by small patches with an uneven spatial distribution. Here, we describe how bird communities respond to the different elements present in a livestock landscape that was originally dominated by tropical moist forest. We surveyed six habitats: open pastures, pastures with shrubs, early‐ and middle‐secondary forests, mature forest, and pastures invaded by bracken ferns (Pteridium aquilinum). Bird diversity was high in secondary and mature forests, and low in fern‐invaded sites and open pastures. Fern‐dominated sites had the lowest bird species richness, and trophic guild diversity of all habitats. Habitat structure affected both bird species richness and densities in similar ways. Tree species richness was the habitat attribute that had a bigger positive effect on bird species richness. Bird community structure varied among sampled habitats, separating habitats in two major groups (forests and pastures). Our data indicate that bracken fern‐invaded pastures were the worst habitat condition for avian communities. To increase bird diversity, we recommend to eliminate or manage bracken fern and to increase shrub and tree cover in open pastures to provide food resources and shelter for birds. Finally, we encourage the maintenance of secondary and mature forest remnants as a strategy to conserve resident birds within a landscape dominated by livestock activities.  相似文献

Aim To compare bird abundances in woodlands along gradients from the city centre to the peri‐urban area. To evaluate the importance of the proportion of woodland within the city and in the peri‐urban landscape to forest bird communities breeding in urban woodlands. To test whether fragmentation effects on birds were linked to the type of peri‐urban matrix. Location A total of 34 Swedish cities with > 10,000 inhabitants in south‐central Sweden. The study area covered 105,000 km2, in which 84% of the Swedish population of 9.1 million lives. Methods Repeated point count surveys were conducted in 2004 in a total of 474 woodlands. General linear models were used to test for possible differences in abundance along urban to peri‐urban gradients, and to regress bird abundances in local urban woodlands on: (1) total woodland cover in the city, (2) total woodland cover in the peri‐urban landscape, (3) the interaction between woodland cover in the city and in the peri‐urban area, (4) region, and (5) human density. Results More than 12,000 individuals of 100 forest bird species were recorded. Of the 34 most common species detected, 13 bird species had higher abundances in urban than in peri‐urban woodlands, and seven species showed the opposite trend. The bird community of urban woodlands was characterized by species associated with deciduous forests and tree nesters, whereas the bird community of peri‐urban woodlands was characterized by species associated with coniferous woodland and ground nesters. Twelve species were significantly linearly associated with the proportion of urban woodland and/or the proportion of peri‐urban woodland, and a further eight species were associated with the interaction between these two factors. Local breeding bird abundances of four species were significantly positively associated with the proportion of urban woodland only in farmland‐dominated landscapes. Main conclusions Fragmentation effects on some urban birds are linked to the type of peri‐urban matrix. In farmland landscapes, peri‐urban woodlands may have been too scarce to act as a source of bird immigrants to fragmented urban woodlands. To maintain populations of specialized forest birds within cities in landscapes dominated by agriculture, it is of paramount importance to conserve any remaining urban woodlands.  相似文献

According to recent data, Aedes communis is a polytopic species inhabiting both zonal and intrazonal biotopes. It has a wide Holarctic nemoral-tundra-steppe range, which can be characterized as European-Asiatic-North-American. In the North-West of the European part of Russia, A. communis occurs in early spring and summer, being a monocyclic species. It is distributed everywhere, both in zones of tundra and forest-tundra and in all taiga subzones. Aedes communis is a psychrophilic species, but attacks of its females were recorded under the temperatures from 2.5 to 28 degrees C. The species occurs in biotopes of different types, but in the taiga zone it is distributed mainly in swampy coniferous forests and, particularly, in fir-woods where its quantity is steadily high, amounting to 70% and more of the mosquito females collections. When fir-woods are cut down, A. communis develops in the reservoirs situated in the small-leaved forests forming in taiga after deforestation.  相似文献

Bird communities in tropical forests are strongly affected by both patch area and habitat edges. The fact that both effects are intrinsically confounded in space raises questions about how these two widely reported ecological patterns interact, and whether they are independent or simply different spatial manifestations of the same phenomenon. Moreover, do small patches of secondary forest, in landscapes where the most sensitive species have gone locally extinct, exhibit similar patterns to those previously observed in fragmented and continuous primary forests? We addressed these questions by testing edge‐related differences in vegetation structure and bird community composition at 31 sites in fragmented and continuous landscapes in the imperilled Atlantic forest of Brazil. Over a two‐year period, birds were captured with mist nets to a standardized effort of 680 net‐hours at each site (~22 000 net‐hours resulting in 3381 captures from 114 species). We found that the bird community in patches of secondary forest was degraded in species composition compared to primary continuous forest, but still exhibited a strong response to edge effects. In fragmented secondary forests, edge and area effects also interacted, such that the magnitude of edge to interior differences on bird community composition declined markedly with patch size. The change in bird species composition between forest interiors and edges was similar to the change in community composition between large and small patches (because species had congruent responses to edge and area), but after controlling for edge effects community composition was no longer affected by patch area. Our results show that although secondary forests hold an impoverished bird community, ecological patterns such as area and edge effects are similar to those reported for primary forests. Our data provide further evidence that edge effects are the main drivers of area effects in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Assembly rules for New England ant assemblages   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Community assembly rules specify patterns of species co-occurrence and morphology dictated by interspecific competition. We collected data on the occurrence of ground-foraging ant species in 22 ombrotrophic bogs and adjacent forest plots of New England to test two general assembly rules: reduced co-occurrence of species among communities, and even spacing of body sizes of species within communities. We used null models to generate random communities unstructured by competition and evaluated patterns at regional and local spatial scales. At the regional scale, species co-occurrence in forests, but not bogs, was less than expected by chance, whereas, at the local scale, co-occurrence in both habitats was not different from random. At the regional scale, spacing of body size distributions was random (in bogs) or aggregated (in forests). At the local scale, body size patterns were weakly segregated in bogs, but random or weakly aggregated in forests. In bogs, size ratio constancy was accompanied by greater generic diversity than expected. Although assembly rules were originally developed for vertebrate communities, they successfully explained some patterns in New England ant assemblages. However, the patterns were contingent on spatial scale, and were distinctly different for bog and forest communities, despite their close proximity and the presence of many shared species in both assemblages. The harsh physical conditions of bogs may act as a habitat filter that alters community assembly rules.  相似文献

In the core region of Brazilian cocoa production, shade cacao plantations (so-called cabrucas) are important components of regional landscapes, constituting potential habitat for a vast array of the regional biota. This research focuses on the ability of cabrucas to harbor bird and bat species in two nearby districts – Una and Ilhéus – with contrasting landscapes. At Una, cabrucas represent less than 6% of the land and are surrounded by large tracts of forest, whereas at Ilhéus these shade plantations are the landscape's dominant feature. Bird and bat communities were richer in cabrucas located in Una compared to nearby forest, while cabrucas from the Ilhéus landscape were significantly poorer in species than nearby forest fragments. However, bird assemblages in cabrucas were characterized by the loss of understory specialists and the increase of more open area and generalist species, whereas forest dwellers still comprised most of the bat species reported in cabrucas. Species richness and composition differed between the two landscapes. Forest fragments and cabrucas from Ilhéus harbored fewer forest-dwelling species than similar habitats in Una. Our study shows that cabrucas support high species richness of birds and bats from the native assemblages but are no surrogates for intact forests, since the presence and representativeness of some forest species apparently depends on the existence of nearby forests. A landscape dominated by cabrucas with a minor portion of native forest is unlikely to ensure long-term conservation of many target species, particularly those of major conservation concern.  相似文献

Recent studies show differences in population trends between groups of species occupying different habitats. In Czech birds, as well as in many other European countries, populations of forest species have increased, whereas populations of farmland species have declined. The aim of our study was to test whether population trends of particular species were related to finer bird-habitat associations within farmland and forest birds. We assessed bird-habitat associations using canonical correspondence analysis based on data from a 400 km long transect across the Czech Republic. We calculated population trends of 62 bird species using log-linear models based on data from a large-scale annual monitoring scheme, which covers the time series from 1982 to 2005. Within forest birds, species with a closer association with lowland broad-leaved forest have had more positive population trends, whereas species with a closer association with montane and coniferous forest revealed more negative population trends. We attribute these opposite trends to the gradual replacement of coniferous forests by deciduous ones, which took place in the Czech Republic during recent decades. Our analyses revealed a hump-shaped relationship within farmland birds, species most closely associated with farmland habitat revealing the most negative trends, whereas species with intermediate association to farmland habitat showed the most positive population trends. Such a pattern can be explained by the abandonment of previously cultivated areas followed by the spread of unmanaged meadows and scrubland. Changes in quantity or quality of preferred habitats may thus represent major drivers of observed bird population changes.  相似文献

A mixed‐species bird flock is a social assemblage where two or more bird species are moving together while foraging and might benefit from increased foraging efficiency and antipredator vigilance. A “mega‐flock,” which includes flocking species from different vegetation strata, often exhibits high species diversity. Mechanisms for the formation of mega‐flocks have not yet been explored. In this study, we evaluated the influence of vegetation structure and bird species diversity in driving the occurrence of mega‐flocks. We investigated the composition of mixed‐species flocks, local bird communities, and vegetation structure in five vegetation types of two high‐elevation sites in central Taiwan. Mega‐flocks occurred more frequently in pine woodland than later successional stages of coniferous forests. However, species richness/diversity of local bird communities increased along successional stages. Therefore, vegetation variables exhibit more influence on the occurrence of mega‐flocks than local bird communities. Besides foliage height diversity, understory coverage also showed positive effects on flock size of mixed‐species flocks. Our results indicated that pine woodlands with more evenly distributed vegetation layers could facilitate the interactions of canopy and understory flocks and increase the formation of mega‐flocks and thus the complexity of mixed‐species flocks.  相似文献

We developed predictive maps of farmland and forest species richness which are based on the “focal species concept” and remote sensing data. We explored environmental preferences of 17 farmland and 33 forest species in Poland, using data from the Pan-European Monitoring Scheme. The largest number of farmland species was noted in the central and eastern parts, while the opposite trend was observed in the case of forest species, where the preferred areas were in the north and south-east. The most important environmental component affecting the bird faunas of farmland and forest was a gradient from arable fields to forest. This relationship is unimodal, which means that on a meso-geographical scale the highest species richness occurred in heterogeneous landscapes where fields are interspersed with forest. Our results also indicate that the geographical gradient in Poland's bird fauna can simply be attributed to the habitat-based distinction: western and central parts are dominated by large agricultural habitats and coniferous forest, while in other areas predominate mixed forests and extensively used farmland. Among the climatic factors, only rainfall influenced the farmland bird species. Its effect is non-linear, but positive, which means that in areas with higher rainfall more species are recorded. Our predictive maps are complementary to research on population trends, and can be an essential tool for effective management and conservation of species populations on a trans-national scale.  相似文献
