Association partners of young chimpanzees at the Mahale Mountains National Park were analyzed. Juvenile and adolescent chimpanzees associated frequently with their mothers, although mother-offspring association decreased as the offspring grew up. Males tended to leave their mothers and associate with adult males, while females remained frequently associating with their mothers in early adolescence. In late adolescence and young adulthood, males usually associated with adult males and cycling adult females. Females may transfer into neighboring unit-groups in this stage. Although an immigrant female tended to be alone when her estrous cycle stopped, she associated with many individuals, in particular with adult males, when she resumed cycling. Some orphans were observed to associate frequently with particular adults. The findings were discussed in relation to the unique characteristics of chimpanzee social system.  相似文献

Summary Grouping of female Mus musculus resulted in an increase in mean estrous cycle length from 4 to 12 days, yet some short cycles were still observed. Short cycles were attributed to certain females who consistently maintained a short cycling pattern as well as females who exhibited both short and long cycles. Upon breeding, females that continued to show a short cycle when grouped produced and weaned more young than females with suppressed cycles. No differences in mean weaning weight or sex ratio of the litters was observed. The ecological and evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The relationship between paracoccidioidomycosis in ddY mouse and its estrous cycle was studied. Adult ddY mice of both sexes were used as experimental animals. Estrous cycle of female mice was examined before inoculation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis yeast cells and mice were divided into 5 groups such as proestrus, estrus, metestrus-I, metestrus-II and diestrus. Each mouse was inoculated intravenously with 106 P. brasiliensis yeast cell units and sacrificed on day 28 after inoculation. Their internal organs were cultured, and in addition, their histopathologies were studied. As a result, there was no difference in the organ cultures among the male and the female mice of 5 groups. All extant species in the Rhinocerotidae family are experiencing escalating threats in the wild, making self-sustaining captive populations essential genetic reservoirs for species survival. Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) will become increasingly important for achieving and maintaining ex situ population sustainability and genetic diversity. Previous reports have shown that a large proportion of captive southern white rhinoceros (SWR) females are irregularly cyclic or acyclic, and that cycling females display two different estrous cycle lengths of approximately 30 or 70 days. It has been suggested that the longer estrous cycle length is infertile or subfertile, as no term pregnancies have been observed following long cycles. Here we report the achievement of two pregnancies following long luteal phases, using ovulation induction and artificial insemination with either fresh or frozen-thawed semen. One female SWR conceived on the first insemination attempt and gave birth to a live offspring. A second female conceived twice in consecutive long cycles although the first embryo was resorbed by 33 days post-insemination. A pregnancy from this female's second insemination is ongoing with expected parturition in November 2019. Whether prolonged estrous cycles in SWR are subfertile or infertile in natural breeding situations remains unclear. However, our findings demonstrate that the application of ARTs following prolonged cycles can result the successful establishment of pregnancies in SWR. Therefore, with ARTs, female SWR otherwise considered nonreproductive due to long estrous cycles may still have the potential for representation and contribution to the ex situ population.  相似文献

This paper summarizes 8 years of captive breeding experience with the endangered Morro Bay kangaroo rat (Dipodomys heermanni morroensis) and the non-endangered Lompoc kangaroo rat (D. h. arenae), a related form used as a surrogate. Kangaroo rats are aggressive and must be caged individually; copulation can only take place when the female is in estrus. The estrous cyle varies, but is usually 14–17 days long; gestation averages 31 days. Data on development of the young, animal health, mortality, and longevity are presented. The productivity of this project is compared with that of another long-term kangaroo rat breeding project in terms of the number of young produced per female per year. A captive breeding program can be initiated with 40–50 reproductive animals as a founder group.  相似文献

Male displacement of copulatory (sperm) plugs from female vaginas provides further evidence for sperm competition in ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), a gregarious prosimian species with a multimale, multifemale mating system. During two mating seasons, I studied two groups of free-ranging ring-tailed lemurs on St. Catherines Island, GA, USA. I observed 22 mating pairs in which males achieved penile intromission. Copulatory plug displacement by males occurred in 9 cases. Plugs were displaced during copulation by male penes upon withdrawl following deep vaginal thrusting. In every case of copulatory plug displacement, the male displacing a plug mated to ejaculation with the estrous female. In a mating system in which females typically mate with more than one male during estrous, often in succession, copulatory plug displacement may function to disrupt or preclude other males' successful insemination of estrous females. The effects of sperm plug displacement on paternity in Lemur catta are unknown, as no study had heretofore documented copulatory plug displacement in this species. The first-male mating advantage suggested for Lemur catta should be re-evaluated where mating order is known, and copulatory plug displacement during mating, or lack thereof, is identified. Because there is a tendency for first-mating males to mate-guard for longer periods of time in Lemur catta, the latency period between the first mate's ejaculation and that of subsequent mates may be an important determinant of male fertilization success.  相似文献

Long-term effects of elevated plasma estradiol (E2) on ovarian and neuroendocrine functions were examined in 4-month-old cycling female C57BL/6J mice injected s.c. with 0.2 or 0.05 mg estradiol valerate (EV), or oil. Within 7 days, EV-injected mice became permanently acyclic, exhibiting the persistent vaginal cornification (PVC) characteristic of reproductive senescence in rodents. Four months after injection, ovaries from EV-injected mice exhibited no corpora lutea, but ovulated in response to an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (as do older, spontaneously PVC mice). When grafted into young mice, ovaries from EV-injected mice supported as many estrous cycles as ovaries from oil-injected controls. EV did not alter the suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) by E2, LH response to injected LH releasing hormone (LHRH), or plasma prolactin (Prl). However, EV-injected mice exhibited impairments in LH regulation similar to those seen in old, acyclic mice. Plasma LH 30 days after ovariectomy was 40% lower, and E2-induced LH surges were 60% lower, in EV-injected mice versus controls. Furthermore, EV-injected mice were unable to support estrous cycles given young ovarian grafts, in contrast to controls. Effects of sustained but physiological levels (15-20 pg/ml) of plasma E2, were examined in intact cycling mice given sham or E2 implants. Six weeks after implantation, the implants were removed; only 50% of the E2-implanted mice subsequently exhibited estrous cycles, compared with 100% of sham-implanted controls. Recent findings suggest that menstrual synchrony may occur in humans and is more dependent on factors of close personal association than simple prox imity. Part I of this study analyzed the estrous cycles of 10 captive group living chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) housed in two separate groups in the same building. Each group contained at least one male. The mean discrepan cies for (1) the approximate day of ovulation (last day of maximum swelling) and (2) the day of onset of estrous swelling were determined for all possible pairs within groups and compared to the mean discrepancies of pairs between groups. With respect to the probable day of ovulation, the mean discrepancy of animals caged together was 8.0 days and that of animals caged separately was 10. 7 days. Comparing the onset of estrous swelling, the mean between groups was 10.4 days, whereas females caged together averaged only 5.7 days. A repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated a significant group effect in the onset of estrous swelling (F = 5.68,p < 0.05), whereas there was no significant difference between the animals caged together and those caged separately with respect to the last day of maximum swelling (F = 1.37, NS). Part II of the study compared the onset of the first postpar tum estrus (PPE) to the onset of estrus in cagemates. During a 6-year period, 13 females exhibited 33 PPEs while in social contact with cycling females. Of 86 paired comparisons, the PPE onset of 43 (50%) occurred with in 6 days of the swelling onset of a cagemate. The results suggest that, as in other species (including humans), the social contact and time spent together influence the synchrony of chimpanzee estrous cycles, especially in terms of swelling onset. The synchrony of estrous swelling and possible mediation by olfactory and/or hormonal cues are discussed as they relate to chimpanzee social structure and female reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Although the energetics of the estrous cycle in primates is not well understood, evidence suggests that energy and nutrient acquisition influence ovulation and the timing of conception. Energy for estrus has to compete with energy allocated for cellular maintenance, thermoregulation, movement for food, and predation avoidance. While some chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) populations do not have a seasonal birth period, evidence suggests that there is seasonality in the number of estrous females. Similarly, the onset of postpartum cycles has been reported to be seasonal. We used 33 months of data from the Taï National Park, Côte dIvoire, to examine how the number of estrous females in a given month was influenced by the abundance and distribution of food, diet, rainfall and temperature. In a second analysis, we examined if there was a seasonal effect on first estrous swellings in adolescent females and postpartum adult females. Results demonstrated that the number of females in estrous in a given month was positively related to food abundance and percent foraging time spent eating insects, and negatively related to mean rainfall in the two preceding months and the mean high temperature. The timing of first estrous swellings of postpartum females and prepartum young females was positively related to the food abundance, and negatively related to mean high temperature. These results showed that environmental conditions can seasonally limit the energetically demanding estrus cycle. The presence of estrous females increases gregariousness in chimpanzee communities, and this study identified environmental factors that affect estrus directly and hence social grouping indirectly.  相似文献

This study compares adult and adolescent female rhesus macaques with regard to (1) characteristics of their copulatory partners, (2) their proceptive behaviors, and (3) adult male behaviors toward them during estrus. We conducted focal follows of 24 adolescent and 65 adult free-ranging estrous female rhesus macaques on Cayo Santiago during two mating seasons. Compared to adult females, adolescents presented sexually to males at higher rates; copulated more frequently with rankless young male, and extra-group males; and, in one of two mating seasons, were ignored more frequently by males to whom they presented sexually. Adolescents tended to copulate with ranked, resident males at higher frequencies on days when the operational sex ratio (adult males:estrous adult females) was high. Males directed “muzzle-up” signals to adolescents at lower rates than to adults in one of two mating seasons, although this effect vanished when males who might have fathered adolescent females were excluded from analysis. Adolescents did not differ consistently from adults in strength of the correlation between proximity maintenance (dyadic Hinde's Index) and copulation rate, or in approach rate to males. Adolescent females, relative to adult females, presented sexually more to rankless young males, but did not present more to ranked, resident males. Both proximate (e.g. endocrine) and ultimate (e.g. differential fecundity; female-female mate competition) explanations may account for the reported differences between adult and adolescent female rhesus macaque sexuality.  相似文献

The exercising woman with nutritional deficits and related menstrual irregularities is at risk of compromising long-term bone health, i.e., the female athlete triad. There is no animal model of the female athlete triad. The purpose of this study was to examine long-term energy restriction in voluntary wheel-running female rats on estrous cycling, bone mineral content, and leptin levels. Twelve female Sprague-Dawley rats (age 34 days) were fed ad libitum and given access to running wheels during an initial 14-wk period, providing baseline and age-related data. Daily collection included dietary intake, body weight, estrous cycling, and voluntary running distance. At 4 mo, rats were randomized into two groups, six restrict-fed rats (70% of ad libitum intake) and six rats continuing as ad libitum-fed controls. Energy intake, energy expenditure, and energy availability (energy intake - energy expenditure) were calculated for each animal. Serum estradiol and leptin concentrations were measured by RIA. Femoral and tibial bone mineral density and bone mineral content (BMC) were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Restrict-fed rats exhibited a decrease in energy availability during Weight Loss and Anestrous phases (P = 0.002). Compared with controls after 12 wk, restrict-fed rats showed reduced concentrations of serum estradiol (P = 0.002) and leptin (P = 0.002), lower ovarian weight (P = 0.002), and decreased femoral (P = 0.041) and tibial (P = 0.05) BMC. Decreased energy availability resulted in anestrus and significant decreases in BMC, estrogen and leptin levels, and body weight. Finally, there is a critical level of energy availability to maintain estrous cycling.  相似文献

Our observations strongly support the view that a lethal gang attack occurred against a young adult male within a wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) community. This is the first report of such an occurrence. At least three adult male chimpanzees are believed to have been involved in the attack. This case is unusual because the attack was fatal, involved directed group aggression within a community, and was not linked to the overthrow of the alpha male. During the period before the attack, the percentage of cycling females in the community was very low (15 males:17 females, a maximum of two regularly cycling). This fact, coupled with the presence of one female in full genital tumescence, may have incited and escalated the violence of the attack. The lethal attack is interpreted as an act of intra-community male sexual competition resulting in the complete exclusion of one male from estrous females.  相似文献

The social system of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) is characterized by the fission-fusion of social groups. Several studies have reported that females are less gregarious than males. In the current study, adult female gregariousness depended on their reproductive state. Noncycling adult females (pregnant, lactating, or post reproductive) were observed in large bisexual parties less often than cycling adult females. On the other hand, cycling adult females were observed in large bisexual parties as often as males, regardless of their estrous state. More males were in parties that included cycling adult females with maximal genital swelling (estrous females) than in parties without them. Moreover, a bisexual party including more estrous females contained more males. These results suggest that large bisexual parties of chimpanzees are constructed by a dual mechanism. First, cycling adult females are attracted to parties that consist of the top ranking male and large numbers of adult and adolescent males. Second, adult and adolescent males that did not belong to parties originally are attracted by estrous females and join them. Thus, in Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, bisexual parties of chimpanzees can be characterized as "parties for reproduction."  相似文献

These studies describe induction of a delayed anovulatory syndrome (DAS) by estradiol (E2) in female C57BL/6J mice. Six days after birth, female mice were injected s.c. with 0.1 micrograms estradiol benzoate or oil. Over 90% of the oil-injected controls exhibited estrous cycles from 2 to 9 mo of age. In contrast, 60% of the E2-injected mice exhibited estrous cycles at 2 mo of age but were acyclic by 9 mo; these mice were considered to have exhibited a DAS, and had longer cycles than controls. At 12 mo, ovarian impairments were assessed by examining 1) ovulation after s.c. injection of 5 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and 2) estrous cycles after grafting into young (3-mo-old) hosts. Simultaneously, neuroendocrine impairments were assessed by examining 1) the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) induced by E2 implants after ovariectomy, and 2) estrous cycles after receiving ovarian grafts from 3-mo-old mice. Ovaries from DAS and control mice ovulated equally in response to hCG. Ovaries from DAS mice grafted into young ovariectomized hosts supported 30% more cycles, of shorter period, compared with ovaries from control donors. However, the E2-induced LH surge was 50% smaller in DAS mice than in controls. Ovariectomized DAS hosts with ovarian grafts from young mice supported 70% fewer estrous cycles, of longer period, compared with ovariectomized control hosts with young grafts. We conclude that the E2-induced DAS in female mice is not due to ovarian impairments, but seems to result from neuroendocrine impairments.  相似文献

Previous reports of increased sexual activity associated with genital swelling during chimpanzee pregnancy have suggested that the tumescent pregnant female may be regarded as a regularly cycling estrous female. Analysis of additional data from seven pregnant and eight cycling females, however, indicated that tumescent pregnant females differed from cycling females in some social interactions with males. As in earlier reports, pregnant females were more receptive to male-initiated copulatory bouts. In addition, pregnant females initiated grooming bouts with males much less frequently than did cycling females, and males spent less time grooming and less frequently inspected the genitals of pregnant than cycling cagemates. This tendency to decrease social interaction during pregnancy is consistent with field reports that pregnant chimpanzees prefer the company of their offspring and other noncycling females. In addition, the genital swelling patterns of 40 chimpanzee pregnancies were analyzed. Length of gestation averaged 231.5 days. Although a high degree of individual variation existed, females were swollen an average of 41% of the days observed, yet reached maximum swelling only 8.7% of the time. Genital swelling was less frequent during the third trimester, averaging 50.5, 47.9, and 22.6% tumescent days in each trimester. Young pregnant females showed maximum swelling more often than did older females. This finding is discussed with respect to field reports of intercommunity transfer of young, tumescent female chimpanzees.  相似文献

The mating patterns of free-ranging chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) of the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania, were studied. Opportunistic mating (non-competitive and temporary mating) was frequently observed in a large-sized unit-group, among young, low-ranking males, and among young, newcomer, non-ovulating females. Restrictive mating (a continuous sexual relationship between a particular pair which includes possessiveness and consortship) was frequently observed in a small-sized unit-group, among middle- and old-aged, high-ranking males, and among old, resident, ovulating females. Relations between those characteristics, such as group size and composition, ages of the individuals of both sexes, female estrous stages, and life history, and the 2 mating patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Activity budgets of wild female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) when lactating were compared with those during estrus and anestrus. Five anestrous females, seven estrous females, and three lactating females in Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, were the subject of focal sampling. Time spent for feeding, resting, and moving was examined. For each of these three categories of activity, there was no significant difference of time spent for each activity between lactating females and either estrous or anestrous females. The females spent about 30% of their daytime feeding, about 40% resting, and about 30% moving. One of the reasons for the lack of difference might be the type of parties that females attended when they were observed. In most cases, the females were seen in large bisexual parties. Although lactating females are expected to need more nutrition than cycling females and this might affect their activity budget, the party type they attended might also affect the budget. Crassostrea virginica was collected from several locations where it is cultured, both along the Northumberland Strait of New Brunswick and Malpeque Bay on the coast of Prince Edward Island. The oysters were found with two turbellarians on their gills. Urastoma cyprinae (Graff) was found in the oysters mostly during the warmer months of the year in numbers averaging as high as 50 worms per host (N = 50) and with as much as 78% of the host population infected (N = 100). Paravortex gemellipara (Linton) was also found during warmer months, but much less frequently or abundantly.Both male and female oysters were found to have U. cyprinae. No eggs or recent young of U. cyprinae were found in hosts; female-mature individuals of P. gemellipara with young were found from June through August.  相似文献

Pinealectomy in the female golden Syrian hamster is not always completely effective in preventing the suppressive effects of long-term light deprivation due to blinding on pituitary prolactin (PRL) cell activity. We examined this curious phenomenon by measuring pituitary PRL mRNA levels, PRL synthesis, and radioimmunoassayable PRL, and correlating these changes with the status of estrous cyclicity. As expected, 12 weeks of light deprivation resulted in loss of estrous cyclicity and a greater than 90% decline in all indices of pituitary PRL cell activity, compared with intact cycling controls. Pinealectomy prevented only 40-50% of this decline. However, if noncycling light-deprived pinealectomized animals were excluded, pinealectomy was completely effective, i.e., cycling intact control animals were no different than cycling blind-pinealectomized. We conclude that the inability of pinealectomy to completely prevent the decline in prolactin cell activity seen after blinding is due to the loss of estrous cyclicity in some blind-pinealectomized females, with the attendant loss of the prolactin-stimulating hormone estrogen.  相似文献

During chronic peroral (PO) treatment of weanling, female Fischer 344 rats with daily injections (0.069 mmol/kg) of either 1,1′-(2,2,2-trichloroethylidene) bis [4-chlorobenzene] (p,p′-DDT), 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), or γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane), the lindane treatment induced a significant 20% increase in body weight after 110 days. Further investigation with 0,5,10,20, and 40 mg/kg lindane confirmed a significant increase in average body weight gain at the two highest doses after ten weeks of treatment. Significantly greater food consumption was observed, and the Lee index indicated that lindane treatment induced obesity. In addition to obesity, lindane caused a delay in vaginal opening, disrupted estrous cycling, reduced pituitary and uterine weight, and elevated food consumption during proestrus (when appetite is normally suppressed by estradiol). These responses suggest that, by inducing alterations in the reproductive function of the female rat and by interfering with hormonal regulation of energy balance, lindane may be antiestrogenic rather than estrogenic as previously proposed.  相似文献
