Motor control requires the generation of a precise temporal sequence of control signals sent to the skeletal musculature. We describe an experiment that, for good performance, requires human subjects to plan movements taking into account uncertainty in their movement duration and the increase in that uncertainty with increasing movement duration. We do this by rewarding movements performed within a specified time window, and penalizing slower movements in some conditions and faster movements in others. Our results indicate that subjects compensated for their natural duration-dependent temporal uncertainty as well as an overall increase in temporal uncertainty that was imposed experimentally. Their compensation for temporal uncertainty, both the natural duration-dependent and imposed overall components, was nearly optimal in the sense of maximizing expected gain in the task. The motor system is able to model its temporal uncertainty and compensate for that uncertainty so as to optimize the consequences of movement.  相似文献

Cell communication by periodic cyclic-AMP pulses.   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
At the surface of aggregating cells of the slime mould, Dictyostelium discoideum, two different sites interacting with extracellular cAMP are detectable: binding sites and cycl-nucleotide phosphodiesterase. Both sites are developmentally regulated. An adequate stimulus for the chemoreceptor system in D. discoideum is the change of cAMP concentration in time, rather than concentration per se: long-term binding of cAMP causes only short-term response. The system is, consequently, adapted to the recognition of pulses rather than to steady-state concentrations of cAMP. The ce,lls are, nevertheless, able to sense stationary spatial gradients and to respond to them by chemotactic orientation. The possibility is discussed that they do so by transforming spatial concentration changes into temporal ones, using extending pseudopods as sensors. The cAMP recognition system is part of a molecular network involved in the generation of spatio-temporal patterns of cellular activities. This system controls the periodic formation of chemotactic signals and their propagation from cell to cell. The phosphodiesterase limits the duration of the cAMP pulses and thus sharply separates the periods of signalling; the binding sites at the cell surface are supposed to be the chemoreceptors. The control of cellular activities via cAMP receptors can be studied with biochemical techniques with cell suspensions in which spatial inhomogeneities are suppressed by intense stirring, whereas the temporal aspect of the spatiotemporal pattern is preserved. Under these conditions it can be shown that the extracellular cAMP concentration changes periodically, and that the phase of the cellular oscillator can be shifted by external pulses of cAMP. It can also be shown that small cAMP pulses induce a high output of cAMP, which demonstrates signal amplification, a function necessary for a cellular relay system.  相似文献

  1. Both the organization of behaviour and communicative interactions can be established by analyzing behavioural time series. By means of an analysis of this kind, conclusions about the control of behaviour and the principles of interindividual communication can be reached. An analysis may be based on simultaneous and successive behavioural events. In these multi-channel time series the temporal arrangement of patterns (“Strukturierung”), the organization and the conditions determining the occurrence of behavioural events can be specified.
  2. Data-analysis by digital computer permits rapid processing of a large quantity of material in regard to several respects. “Sets of data” can be stored, thus enabling the user to correct, alter, combine and finally analyze them with respect to various questions. For this purpose, a program system for the digital processing of behavioural time series (title “PROVED”) was developed.
  3. The course of behavioural events is composed of temporal patterns which are ordered in a definite hierarchy (Fig. 1). Several quantitative and qualitative characteristics (“Muster-Merkmale”) can be attributed to each pattern (Figs. 2,4). With the PROVED-System, the temporal arrangement of behavioural patterns is reestablished by the computer according to the control orders of the user. These orders must take into consideration the physiological relevance that is to be confirmed by an analysis of time serics (Fig. 3). The orders controlling the temporal arragement as well as the asignment of pattern characteristics to sets of data are available for further evaluation.
  4. The PROVED-System includes several procedures involving input, output, storage, administration, correction, assignment of characteristics, temporal arrangement and analysis of data. The examiner can select and combine these procedures at will using statements of a particular control language.
  5. During the first step of data analysis, a fixed number of parameters for each pattern is determined, the number of parameters varying with the complexity of the problem. Any measured value which is related to the pattern under investigation can be regarded as a parameter. During the second step, multidimensional frequency distributions of crossclassified parameters are established which can be examined by means of statistical tests (third step) (Figs. 5,6).
  6. Determination of the parameters by the examiner decisively influences the further course of the analysis. The control statements for one parameter consist of two parts: 1. quality of the parameter (type of pattern, temporal distance, etc.), 2. position of the parameter in the behavioural time series (pattern under investigation, immediately subsequent pattern, next pattern with the same characteristics, etc.). The latter is determined by a series of shifts of indices controlled by the user (Fig. 7,8).
  7. The PROVED-System can be applied to the analysis of various behavioural time series (succession of sounds, recordings of movements, observations of behavioural acts, etc.). Depending upon the aim of the analysis (temporal arrangement, organization, control of behaviour or communication), spontaneous behavioural events, input-output experiments (stimulus-reaction) and social interaction can be evaluated.

The need to study spatio-temporal chaos in a spatially extended dynamical system which exhibits not only irregular, initial-value sensitive temporal behavior but also the formation of irregular spatial patterns, has increasingly been recognized in biological science. While the temporal aspect of chaotic dynamics is usually characterized by the dominant Lyapunov exponent, the spatial aspect can be quantified by the correlation length. In this paper, using the diffusion-reaction model of population dynamics and considering the conditions of the system stability with respect to small heterogeneous perturbations, we derive an analytical formula for an ‘intrinsic length’ which appears to be in a very good agreement with the value of the correlation length of the system. Using this formula and numerical simulations, we analyze the dependence of the correlation length on the system parameters. We show that our findings may lead to a new understanding of some well-known experimental and field data as well as affect the choice of an adequate model of chaotic dynamics in biological and chemical systems.  相似文献

We have developed a fully automated system for operant behavior testing and neuronal activity recording by which multiple cognitive brain functions can be investigated in a single task sequence. The unique feature of this system is a custom-made, acoustically transparent chamber that eliminates many of the issues associated with auditory cue control in most commercially available chambers. The ease with which operant devices can be added or replaced makes this system quite versatile, allowing for the implementation of a variety of auditory, visual, and olfactory behavioral tasks. Automation of the system allows fine temporal (10 ms) control and precise time-stamping of each event in a predesigned behavioral sequence. When combined with a multi-channel electrophysiology recording system, multiple cognitive brain functions, such as motivation, attention, decision-making, patience, and rewards, can be examined sequentially or independently.  相似文献

Skilled locomotor behaviour requires information from various levels within the central nervous system (CNS). Mathematical models have permitted researchers to simulate various mechanisms in order to understand the organization of the locomotor control system. While it is difficult to adequately characterize the numerous inputs to the locomotor control system, an alternative strategy may be to use a kinematic movement plan to represent the complex inputs to the locomotor control system based on the possibility that the CNS may plan movements at a kinematic level. We propose the use of artificial neural network (ANN) models to represent the transformation of a kinematic plan into the necessary motor patterns. Essentially, kinematic representation of the actual limb movement was used as the input to an ANN model which generated the EMG activity of 8 muscles of the lower limb and trunk. Data from a wide variety of gait conditions was necessary to develop a robust model that could accommodate various environmental conditions encountered during everyday activity. A total of 120 walking strides representing normal walking and ten conditions where the normal gait was modified in terms of cadence, stride length, stance width or required foot clearance. The final network was assessed on its ability to predict the EMG activity on individual walking trials as well as its ability to represent the general activation pattern of a particular gait condition. The predicted EMG patterns closely matched those recorded experimentally, exhibiting the appropriate magnitude and temporal phasing required for each modification. Only 2 of the 96 muscle/gait conditions had RMS errors above 0.10, only 5 muscle/gait conditions exhibited correlations below 0.80 (most were above 0.90) and only 25 muscle/gait conditions deviated outside the normal range of muscle activity for more than 25% of the gait cycle. These results indicate the ability of single network ANNs to represent the transformation between a kinematic movement plan and the necessary muscle activations for normal steady state locomotion but they were also able to generate muscle activation patterns for conditions requiring changes in walking speed, foot placement and foot clearance. The abilities of this type of network have implications towards both the fundamental understanding of the control of locomotion and practical realizations of artificial control systems for use in rehabilitation medicine.  相似文献

An auditory neuron can preserve the temporal fine structure of a low-frequency tone by phase-locking its response to the stimulus. Apart from sound localization, however, much about the role of this temporal information for signal processing in the brain remains unknown. Through psychoacoustic studies we provide direct evidence that humans employ temporal fine structure to discriminate between frequencies. To this end we construct tones that are based on a single frequency but in which, through the concatenation of wavelets, the phase changes randomly every few cycles. We then test the frequency discrimination of these phase-changing tones, of control tones without phase changes, and of short tones that consist of a single wavelet. For carrier frequencies below a few kilohertz we find that phase changes systematically worsen frequency discrimination. No such effect appears for higher carrier frequencies at which temporal information is not available in the central auditory system.  相似文献

Resources added to agroecosystems to enhance biological control are potentially available to multiple members of the resident insect community—not only the biological control agents for which the resources are intended. Many studies have examined the effects of sugar feeding on the efficacy of biological control agents. However, such information is lacking for other, interacting species such as facultative hyperparasitoids, which may contribute to pest suppression but can also interfere with introduced biological control agents. Under greenhouse conditions, we tested the direct effects of sugar and nectar provisioning on the longevity, host‐killing impact and offspring production of two pupal parasitoids associated with leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella: the introduced biological control agent, Diadromus pulchellus, and the native facultative hyperparasitoid, Conura albifrons. Adding sucrose, buckwheat or a combination of buckwheat and common vetch to a sugar‐deprived system (potted leek plants in cages) increased parasitoid longevity and resulted in higher leek moth parasitism and mortality compared to water or common vetch treatments. However, the two parasitoid species exhibited a distinct temporal response to the treatments, likely influenced by differences in their life histories. This study provides insight into how integrating conservation biological control techniques could affect the success of a classical biological control programme.  相似文献

The ability to regulate spatial and temporal expression of genes is a useful tool in biotechnology as well as studies of functional genomics. Such regulation can provide information concerning the function of a gene in a developmental context while avoiding potential harmful effects due to constitutive overexpression of the gene. A GUS gene construct that uses the ecdysone receptor-based chemically inducible system and several different tissue-specific promoters was introduced into the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and into the crop plant Brassica juncea. Here we describe the results of studies showing that this system provides both temporal and spatial control of transgene expression, and confirm that this system is useful for tissue-specific and temporal induction of gene expression in A. thaliana and B. juncea.  相似文献

Kinetic studies on repression of the enzymes for histidine biosynthesis in Salmonella typhimurium showed that, upon addition of histidine to a derepressed culture, the enzymes became repressed in a temporal sequence which corresponds with the positional sequence of the genes in the histidine operon. This serial pattern of repression occurred under conditions in which the feedback site of the first enzyme for histidine biosynthesis is intact. When this site was rendered nonfunctional the pattern of repression was changed so that all of the enzymes became repressed concomitantly. These results suggest that the first enzyme for histidine biosynthesis plays a hitherto unrecognized role in control of the histidine system.  相似文献

Brain entropy (BEN) mapping provides a novel approach to characterize brain temporal dynamics, a key feature of human brain. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI), reliable and spatially distributed BEN patterns have been identified in normal brain, suggesting a potential use in clinical populations since temporal brain dynamics and entropy may be altered in disease conditions. The purpose of this study was to characterize BEN in multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of people. Since currently there is no cure for MS, developing treatment or medication that can slow down its progression represents a high research priority, for which validating a brain marker sensitive to disease and the related functional impairments is essential. Because MS can start long time before any measurable symptoms and structural deficits, assessing the dynamic brain activity and correspondingly BEN may provide a critical way to study MS and its progression. Because BEN is new to MS, we aimed to assess BEN alterations in the relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients using a patient versus control design, to examine the correlation of BEN to clinical measurements, and to check the correlation of BEN to structural brain measures which have been more often used in MS studies. As compared to controls, RRMS patients showed increased BEN in motor areas, executive control area, spatial coordinating area, and memory system. Increased BEN was related to greater disease severity as measured by the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and greater tissue damage as indicated by the mean diffusivity. Patients also showed decreased BEN in other places, which was associated with less disability or fatigue, indicating a disease-related BEN re-distribution. Our results suggest BEN as a novel and useful tool for characterizing RRMS.  相似文献

Biological motion (BM) perception is the compelling ability of the visual system to perceive complex animated movements effortlessly and promptly. A recent study has shown that BM can automatically lengthen perceived temporal duration independent of global configuration. The present study aimed mainly to investigate this temporal dilation effect of BM signals in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. We used the temporal dilation effect as an implicit measure of visual processing of BM. In all, 32 PD patients (under off-therapy conditions) and 32 healthy controls (HCs) participated in our study. In each trial, an upright BM sequence and an inverted BM sequence were presented within an interval in the center of the screen. We tested both canonical and scrambled BM sequences; the scrambled ones were generated by disturbing the global configuration of the canonical ones but preserving exactly the same local motion components. Observers were required to make a verbal two-alternative forced choice response to indicate which interval (the first or the second) appeared longer. Statistical analyses were conducted on the points of subjective equality (PSEs). We found that the temporal dilation effect was significantly reduced for PD patients compared with HCs in both canonical and scrambled BM conditions. Moreover, no temporal dilation effects of scrambled BM were shown in both early- and late-stage PD patients, while the temporal dilation effect of canonical BM was relatively preserved in the early stages.  相似文献

The increasing availability of temporal network data is calling for more research on extracting and characterizing mesoscopic structures in temporal networks and on relating such structure to specific functions or properties of the system. An outstanding challenge is the extension of the results achieved for static networks to time-varying networks, where the topological structure of the system and the temporal activity patterns of its components are intertwined. Here we investigate the use of a latent factor decomposition technique, non-negative tensor factorization, to extract the community-activity structure of temporal networks. The method is intrinsically temporal and allows to simultaneously identify communities and to track their activity over time. We represent the time-varying adjacency matrix of a temporal network as a three-way tensor and approximate this tensor as a sum of terms that can be interpreted as communities of nodes with an associated activity time series. We summarize known computational techniques for tensor decomposition and discuss some quality metrics that can be used to tune the complexity of the factorized representation. We subsequently apply tensor factorization to a temporal network for which a ground truth is available for both the community structure and the temporal activity patterns. The data we use describe the social interactions of students in a school, the associations between students and school classes, and the spatio-temporal trajectories of students over time. We show that non-negative tensor factorization is capable of recovering the class structure with high accuracy. In particular, the extracted tensor components can be validated either as known school classes, or in terms of correlated activity patterns, i.e., of spatial and temporal coincidences that are determined by the known school activity schedule.  相似文献

In this review, we summarize results of recent research on the temporal variability of lung function, symptoms, and inflammatory biomarkers. Specifically, we demonstrate how fluctuation analysis borrowed from statistical physics can be used to gain insight into neurorespiratory control and complex chronic dynamic diseases such as asthma viewed as a system of interacting components (e.g., inflammatory, immunological, and mechanical). Fluctuation analysis tools are based on quantifying the distribution and the short- and long-term temporal history of tidal breathing and lung function parameters to assess neurorespiratory control and monitor chronic disease. The latter includes the assessment of severity and disease control, the impact of treatment and environmental triggers, the temporal characterization of disease phenotypes, and the individual risk of exacerbation. While in many cases specific mechanistic insight into the fluctuations still awaits further research, appropriate analyses of the fluctuations already impact on clinical science and practice.  相似文献

The occurrence, activity and plasticity of the CAM pathway is described from an introductory viewpoint, framed by the use of the four "Phases" of CAM as comparative indicators of the interplay between environmental constraints and internal molecular and biochemical regulation. Having described a number of "rules" which seem to govern the CAM cycle and apply uniformly to most species, a number of key regulatory points can then be identified. These include temporal separation of carboxylases, based on the circadian expression of key genes and their control by metabolites. The role of a circadian oscillator and interplay between tonoplast and nuclear control are central to maintaining the CAM cycle. Control of reserve carbohydrates is often neglected, but the importance of daily partitioning (for growth and the subsequent night-time CAM activity) and use at night is shown to drive the CAM cycle. Finally, it is shown that the genotypic and phenotypic plasticity in patterns of CAM expression is mediated partly by environmental conditions and molecular signalling, but also by diffusive constraints in succulent tissues. A transformation system is now required to allow these key areas of control to be elucidated.  相似文献

Research into repair within the circular economy (CE) typically focuses on technical aspects of design, policy, and markets, and often assumes simplified conditions for the user/owner and the product system to explain the barriers to scaling repair activities. However, factors occurring at pre-use stages of the product's life cycle can significantly influence whether, and to what extent, repair is viable or possible, that is, warranty duration, after-sale service provision, and access to necessities. The passing of time can directly and indirectly affect the ability, difficulty, and thus, the likelihood of repair activities being performed at each stage of the product's life cycle. Drawing from the literature and applying inductive systems-thinking tools, we propose a framework for considering the “System of Repairability.” We delineate how the passing of time (temporal dimensions) affects one's ‘‘ability to repair,’’ as a product progresses through different life cycle phases (i.e., breakdown vs. repair vs. disposal), and the point(s) at which the repair is considered or attempted (i.e., year of usage). By integrating life cycle and temporal (time-based) dimensions into a broad System of Repairability framework, we clarify relevant interconnections, iterations, sequences, and timing of decision points, stakeholders, and necessary conditions to facilitate an outcome of successful repair at the individual level, and thus intervention strategies for scaling repair within CE. We discuss how a policy mix can address the life cycle of products and the repair system more holistically. We conclude with a future outlook on how temporal dimensions can inform policy strategies and future research.  相似文献

AIMS: Production of biomass and yield in natural and agronomic conditions depend on the endogenous growth capacity of plants and on the environmental conditions constraining it. Sink growth drives the competition for carbon, nutrients and water within the plant, and determines the structure of leaves and roots that supply resources to the plant later on. For their outstanding importance, analyses of internal growth mechanisms and of environmental impact on plant growth are long-standing topics in plant sciences. SCOPE: Recent technological developments have made it feasible to study the dynamics of plant growth in temporal and spatial scales that are relevant to link macroscopic growth with molecular control. These developments provided first insights into the truly dynamic interaction between environment and endogenous control of plant growth. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence is presented in this paper that the relative importance of endogenous control versus the impact of the dynamics of the environment depends on the frequency pattern of the environmental conditions to which the tissue is exposed. It can further be speculated that this is not only relevant within individual plants (hence leaves versus roots), but also crucial for the adaptation of plant species to the various dynamics of their environments. The following are discussed: mechanisms linking growth and concentrations of primary metabolites, and differences and homologies between spatial and temporal patterns of root and leaf growth with metabolite patterns.  相似文献

Purpose

Because the potential impacts of emissions and extractions can be sensitive to timing, the temporal aggregation of life cycle inventory (LCI) data has often been cited as a limitation in life cycle assessment (LCA). Until now, examples of temporal emission and extraction distributions were restricted to the foreground processes of product systems. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the relevance of considering the temporal distribution of the background system inventory.

Methods

The paper focuses on the global warming impact category for which so-called dynamic characterization factors (CFs) were developed and uses the ecoinvent v2.2 database as both an example database to which temporal information can be added and a source of product systems to test the relevance of adding temporal information to the background system. Temporal information was added to the elementary and intermediate exchanges of 22 % of the unit processes in the database. Using the enhanced structure path analysis (ESPA) method to generate temporally differentiated LCIs in conjunction with time-dependent global warming characterization factors, potential impacts were calculated for all 4,034 product systems in the ecoinvent database.

Results and discussion

Each time, the results were calculated for (1) systems in which temporal information was only added to the first two tiers, representing studies in which only the foreground system is temporally differentiated, and (2) systems in which temporal information was also added to the background system. For 8.6 % of the database product systems, adding temporal differentiation to background unit processes affected the global warming impact scores by more than 10 %. For most of the affected product systems, considering temporal information in the background unit processes decreased the global warming impact scores. The sectors that show most sensitivity to the temporal differentiation of background unit processes are associated with wood and biofuel sectors.

Conclusions

Even though the addition of temporal information to unit processes in LCI databases would not benefit every LCA study, the enhancement can be relevant. It allows for a more accurate global warming impact assessment, especially for LCAs in which products of biomass are present in substantial amounts. Relevance for other impact categories could be discussed in further work.  相似文献
