Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors. Release of treated sewage effluent and pollution from agricultural or urban sources can independently reduce water quality with implications for ecological communities. However, our knowledge of the combined effects of these stressors is limited. We performed a field study to quantify the combined effect of treated sewage discharge and land use on nutrient concentrations, sewage fungus presence and communities of macroinvertebrates and benthic algae. Over three seasons in four rivers we found that a model which included an interaction between sewage pollution and time of the year (i.e. months) was the best predictor of nutrient concentrations and the abundance of algae and sewage fungus. Both macroinvertebrate and algae communities shifted downstream of sewage input. Specifically, more tolerant groups, such as cyanobacteria and oligochaetes, were more abundant. The EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Tricoptera) water quality score was best explained by an interaction between month and agriculture in the surrounding landscape. Overall, our results show that sewage discharge has a significant impact on water quality and benthic riverine communities, regardless of the surrounding land uses. Agricultural inputs, however, could be more important than treated sewage discharge in reducing the abundance of sensitive invertebrate taxa. We need both improvements to wastewater treatment processes and reductions in agricultural pollution to reduce threats to vulnerable freshwater communities.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal dynamics of pollution-indicator bacteria and aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were studied in the sewage treatment lagoons of an urban wastewater center after 26 months of biweekly sampling at eight stations in these lagoons. Robust statistical methods of time-series analysis were used to study successional steps (through chronological clustering) and rhythmic behavior through time (through contingency periodogram). The aerobic heterotrophic bacterial community showed two types of temporal evolution: in the first four stations, it seems mainly controlled by the nutrient support capacity of the sewage input, whereas in the remaining part of the lagoon, it seems likely that the pollution-indicator bacteria are gradually replaced by other bacterial types that are better adapted to this environment. On the other hand, the pollution-indicator bacteria showed an annual cycle which increased in amplitude at distances further from the wastewater source. The main events in this cycle were produced simultaneously at all stations, indicating control of these bacterial populations by climatic factors, which act through physical and chemical factors, and also through other biological components of this ecosystem (phytoplankton and zooplankton). Finally, we use results from this study to suggest a modified design for a future study program.  相似文献

In order to evaluate potential toxic effects of stabilized sewage sludge that are currently applied to agricultural soils, three types of municipal sewage sludge and one pig slurry were subjected to phytotoxicity assays using three plants (Brassica rapa, Lolium perenne and Trifolium pratense). Equivalent batches of aerobically and anaerobically-digested sludge (F) from two municipal wastewater treatment plants, were composted (C) or thermally dried (T). In addition, one anaerobically-digested and thermally-dried pig slurry (P) was tested. A seedling growth test was performed in accordance with the OECD Guideline 208A, using seed emergence and shoot length as endpoints to identify the inhibition of plants growing in increasing doses of sludge. A correlation analysis between EC50 and physico-chemical parameters or the pollutant burden of the biosolids was also calculated. In all tests, lower germination rates were observed for T. pratense than for L. perenne and B. rapa. A moderate stimulatory effect on shoot length at low doses was observed for the three plants. In these wastes, a strong positive correlation was found between higher values of EC50 (less toxicity) and the stability degree of their organic matter, and a negative correlation between EC50 and total N, hydrolysable N or NH4-N content. No correlations were found with heavy metal or organic pollutant content in those wastes. Results indicate that digested sludge, thermally-dried sludge and thermally-dried pig slurry have non-negligible short term phytotoxic effects, and confirm that composting is an effective sludge treatment for the reduction of phytotoxicity.  相似文献

During a 13-month period (August 1, 1977-August 31, 1978) 55 samples of 2-4 L of raw sewage from an urban residential area were collected and studied for the presence of human enteroviruses. Viruses were recovered from 47 (90.5%) of the samples. Of the 201 viral isolates propagated, 180 (89.5%) were identified by the serum neutralization test as poliovirus types 1,2, or 3; 16 (8%) were identified as coxsackie B viruses; and 5 (2.5%) could not be identified by the methods used. While all polioviruses, types 2 and 3 isolates, were vaccine-like (rct-/d-) or intermediate strains, 14 poliovires, type 1 out of 55 selected isolates, were found to be non-vaccine-like (rct+/d+), 8 were rct-/d-), and 33 were intermediate strains. Out of nine samples submitted to the serodifferentiation (McBride) test, six poliovires, type 1 rct+/d+ and three rct+/d-, were related to wild strains.  相似文献

1. The responses of Aurelia medusae to pharmacological agents and ionic variation were classified into four response types: Type I, no response; Type II, inhibition of pacemaker activity; Type III, inhibition of both pacemakers and swimming muscles; and Type IV, increase in pacemaker output. 2. The swimming pacemakers of Aurelia medusae become hyperactive in Mg+2-free solutions (Type IV). This response appears to be general in swimming scyphozoa. 3. The response pattern to pharmacologically-active compounds indicates that the coelenterate neuromuscular system is quite different than those in other phyla. In fact, the response spectrum is not consistent within the Cnidaria. 4. Similarly, the responses of adult medusae to ionic variation show no consistent pattern within various scyphomedusae. 5. Test solutions from each response type established with medusae were selected and tested on the scyphistoma and strobila stages. The comparison of the responses to the test solutions between the medusa, scyphistoma, and strobila showed that the neuromuscular systems are physiologically different. The strobila, specificially the ephyra, is a mixture of both polypoid and medusoid response types. The strobila, therefore, is physiologically an intermediate stage in the development of the adult medusa.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of types I, II, III, V and IX collagens in healing fractures of the rabbit tibia has been demonstrated by immunofluorescent techniques. It has also been shown that the mechanical stability of the healing fracture affects both the distribution and types of the collagens present.The initial fibrous matrix contains types III and V collagens; type I collagen was only located in this matrix if unfixed tissue was used. In mechanically stable fractures, cancellous bone forms over the entire periosteal surface by 5–7 days; type I collagen is laid down within the previous fibrous matrix. The trabeculae are heterogeneous in their collagen content. The cavities contain a matrix of types III and V collagens. Small nodules of cartilage may be present between 7 and 14 days; these contain types II and IX collagens.In mechanically unstable fractures, cancellous bone is initially formed away from the fracture gap. The fibrous tissue over the gap is replaced by cartilage; types II and IX collagens are laid down on the pre-existing fibrous matrix. The cartilage is replaced by endochondral ossification. At the ossification front, type I collagen is found around the chondrocyte lacunae of the spicules of cartilage. The new trabeculae contain a core of cartilage which is surrounded by a bone matrix of types I and V collagens.The fracture gaps are invaded by fibrous tissue, which contain types III and V collagens. In this second study (1979-1981) of the viral content of sewage we have demonstrated the presence of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in Laval and Montreal. Several strains of poliovirus types 2 and 3 were nonvaccinal. This is in contrast with our first study (1977-1978) in which only type 1 poliovirus isolates were nonvaccinal. Coxsackievirus types B-3, B-4, and B-5 and echovirus types 1, 7, and 11 were also isolated from sewage. Interestingly, these isolations coincided with reports of isolation of the same strains during the same period by diagnostic laboratories. Our method based on Vero and BSC-1 cell cultures for virus isolation and immune electron microscopy for identification permitted the recovery not only of several strains of enteroviruses but also of some adenoviruses and reoviruses.  相似文献

In poecilogony, different types of larvae are produced within the same species. Previous studies have suggested maternal control of the production of larval types; however, it is not clear which factors or mechanisms generate contrasting developmental patterns among siblings. The spionid polychaete Boccardia proboscidea produces within the same capsule adelphophagic larvae that eat nurse eggs and siblings and complete all or most of their development inside the capsule (Type A larvae), and larvae with little growth until they hatch as planktotrophic larvae (Type B larvae). In this study, we manipulated capsule content to explore the factors determining larval type in B. proboscidea and the role of extra‐embryonic maternal nutrition and sib–sib interaction in the developmental fate of offspring. When early larval stages were grown individually in vitro, with nurse eggs as the only food source, some of them remained small, while others continue developing into larger pre‐competent larvae by feeding on nurse eggs. This suggests that larval types in B. proboscidea are determined very early in development and are not solely the product of sib–sib interaction inside the capsule. However, our data also suggest that hatching size variability within larval types of a clutch depends on nurse egg availability. Type B larvae grew normally to metamorphosis when phytoplankton was available, but suffered high rates of cannibalism by Type A larvae. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that individual larval fates are determined very early in development and that once their fate is determined, hatching size and intracapsular survival are affected by maternal food provisioning and sibling interaction.  相似文献

We examined different types of raw sewage sludge treatment, including consolidation, anaerobic mesophilic digestion with subsequent consolidation, and aerobic-thermophilic digestion. Of these, the most efficient reduction in infectious virus titer was achieved by mesophilic digestion with subsequent consolidation, although a pilot-scale aerobic-thermophilic digester was extremely time effective, producing sludges with similarly low virus titers in a small fraction of the time. Although none of the treatments examined consistently produced a sludge with undetectable virus levels, mesophilic digestion alone was found to be particularly unreliable in reducing the levels of infectious virus present in the raw sludge.  相似文献

1. Dab, Limanda limanda, exposed to nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 0.0032% (low) and 0.032% (high) sewage sludge in seawater for 12 weeks, were assessed for their immunological competence. 2. No effect upon total blood leucocyte and erythrocyte numbers was found, although significantly fewer thrombocytes were seen in the high-exposure group. 3. A decreased serum protein level was found in the high exposure group, but lysozyme and immunoglobulin levels showed non-significant differences between the groups. 4. Melano-macrophage centres were also affected in the high-exposure dab, which had increased numbers in the spleen and kidney. No effect upon spleen weights or oxygen free radical production by splenocytes was noted. However, oxygen free radical production by kidney leucocytes was inhibited in the low-exposure dab.  相似文献

根据对江苏省茅苍术地道产区的实地调查研究,结果表明如不采取保护措施,茅苍术商品药材资源耗尽的期限为10年,至多20年,因地而异。不同种源的植株常具有不同的外部形态特征,这些特征是遗传所决定的,然而并不是所有的不同种源的植株都存在明显的形态特征差异。甚至在同一形态相似的种群内,各单株根茎所含化学成分的种类与数量也有差异。江苏省的茅苍术至少可划分为两个变异类型,两个已研究确定的类型所占比例分别为总个体数的38.8%和9.7%。  相似文献

Gastric evacuation experiments were performed on horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. Discrete meals of different sizes of krill Meganyctiphanes norvegicus, mysids Neomysis integer , brown shrimp Crangon crangon , and herring Clupea harengus were fed to test the effect of prey type on the gastric evacuation. A general evacuation model without meal size as a variable was fitted to the data on dry weights by means of non-linear regression. With the exception of mysid evacuation the estimated parameters for curvature, predator weight effect, and temperature effect of the general evacuation model were very similar for all other food types and also confirmed the results obtained with smelt Osmerus eperlanus. In contrast the evacuation of mysids showed a strong exponential curvature, rather the effect of prey size than of prey type. The prey specific evacuation constants of the model revealed a linear relationship to the energy content. A general consumption model for field estimates is presented that can be used for prey types that have not yet been tested in the experiments, provided the energy content is known.  相似文献

  • 1 The feeding behaviour of nymphs of the perlid stonefly Dinocras cephalotes when presented with two different mayfly prey types on different substrates was examined in the laboratory.
  • 2 Most of the evidence suggested that Dinocras cephalotes did not choose between Baetis rhodani and Rhithrogena semicolomta as, under identical circumstances: (i) the survival of both prey types was the same; (ii) the predator's overall searching behaviour was similar in the presence of either mayfly, although B. rhodani was pursued more, especially on complex substrates; (iii) the number of attacks on both prey types was the same; and (iv) the intake of dry weight prey biomass over 24 h remained the same, irrespective of prey species.
  • 3 The predation efficiency (no. of prey captured/no, of encounters) of D. cephalotes decreased with increasing substrate complexity—but only with R. semicolorata as prey, and also when more than one stonefly was present—but only when B. rhodani was the prey. Predator efficiency was greater at low densities of R. semicolorata but highest at a medium density of B. rhodani.
  • 4 Increase in the body weight of D. cephalotes was greater when nymphs were fed a monospecific diet of R. semicolorata compared with one of B. rhodani. This was despite the findings that: (i) nymphs of B. rhodani contained 31.3% more protein (per mg dry body weight) than nymphs of R. semicolorata, whereas the latter contained 81.0% more chitin; and (ii) nymphs of R. semicolorata took 2.7 times as long to consume and almost twice as long to pass through the predator's gut. The longer gut passage time may have allowed a greater assimilation efficiency which may have led to the observed better growth.
  • 5 Dinocras cephalotes is thought to feed opportunistically, with a certain daily food biomass intake as its primary need rather than any specific prey preference. Foraging decisions, or opportunities, affect the fitness of individual nymphs and this may be reflected in the wide size range of contemporary nymphs found in field populations. Variation in foraging efficiency by predators and evasion success by prey, across substrate types, is thought to contribute to the well-known microdistribution patterns of species observed in lotic communities.

Nine intraepithelial ciliated cell types that are presumed to be sensory cells were identified in the epithelium of the pre- and postocular tentacles, the digital tentacles, and the rhinophore of the juvenile tetrabranchiate cephalopod Nautilus pompilius L. The morphological diversity and specialization in distribution of the different ciliated cell types analyzed by SEM methods suggest that these cells include receptors of several sensory functions. Ciliated cell types in different organs that show similar surface features were combined in named groups. The most striking cell, type I, is characterized by a tuft of long and numerous cilia. The highest density of this cell type occurs in ciliary fields in the epithelium of the lamellae of the pre- and postocular tentacles, in the olfactory pits of the rhinophores, and in the lamellae of four pairs of lateral digital tentacles, but not in the epithelium of the medial digital tentacles. The similar morphological data, together with behavioral observations on feeding habits, suggest that this cell type may serve in long-distance chemosensory function. The other ciliated cell types are solitary cells with specific spatial distributions in the various organs. Cell types with tufts of relatively short, stiff cilia (types III, IV, VIII), which are distributed in the lateral and aboral areas of the tentacles and at the base of the tentacle-like process of the rhinophore, are considered to be employed in mechanosensory transduction, while the solitary cells with bristle-like cilia at the margin of the ciliary fields (type II) and at the base of the rhinophore (type IX) may be involved in chemoreception. Histological investigation of the epithelium and the nerve structures of the different organs shows the proportion and distribution of the sensory pathways. Two different types of digital tentacles can be distinguished according to their putative functions: lateral slender digital tentacles in four pairs, of which the lowermost are the so-called long digital tentacles, participate in distance chemoreception, and the medial digital tentacles, whose terminal axial nerve cord may represent a specialized neuromechanosensory structure, appear to have contact chemoreceptive abilities.  相似文献

To ascertain the health risks that may be posed by the land application of sewage sludges, a scheme was devised to determine the types and numbers of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria present in sludges. A processing treatment was adapted to sludge to give a homogenate which yielded the greatest numbers of viable bacteria. Conventional methods were successful in enumerating Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, gram-negative enteric bacteria, and commonly used indicator organisms. Modifications of conventional methods improved the enumeration of Salmonella, Mycobacterium sp., fluorescent Pseudomonas sp., and Clostridium perfringens. However, Shigella methodology yielded only one isolate. Utilizing the proposed scheme, the population densities of these organisms were estimated in three domestic wastewater sludges. In light of these results, the potential impact of land application of sewage sludges is discussed.  相似文献

Some factors affecting the fluorescence of bacteria stained with acridine orange and the direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT) were studied. When bacterial cells from a chemostat operated at dilution rates between 0.1 and 0.7/h were used the differential fluorescence observed in the DEFT related to cell 'activity' and the orange fluorescence, which was predominant at high growth rates, may be related to an increase in the RNA content of the cells. Heat affected the colour of cell fluorescence and this was dependent on the cell type and, in particular, age. Uptake of acridine orange into the cells was also found to be an important factor determining the colour of fluorescence. However, with heat-treated cells there was no correlation between the amount of uptake and colour of fluorescence. The relative amounts and degree of denaturation of the different types of nucleic acids remaining in the cells after heat treatment appeared primarily to determine the colour of fluorescence.  相似文献

The effects of the addition of two heavy metals (nickel and lead) and a support material (purified sepiolite) on the methanogenesis have been evaluated in two types of domestic sewage sludges. A higher toxic effect of the metals was observed on the production of methane from loading sludge than from the anaerobic digester sludge, nickel being more toxic than lead in all cases studied. Antagonistic effects between both heavy metals were obtained when the loading sludge was supplemented with several concentrations of these metals. The addition of sepiolite to the loading sludge reduced toxic effects of both metals, which contrasts with the results obtained using sludges from anaerobic digester.  相似文献

Dose of theophylline and caffeine which do not produce aortic arch anomalies in embryonic chicks have been shown to potentiate catecholamine-induced aortic arch malformations in that experimental animal. Theophylline (2.1 X 10(-5) mole per milliliter isotonic saline solution) potentiated the effective dose of norepinephrine more than 100 times. The greatest potentiation observed with epinephrine (2.5 X) was induced by 2.6 X 10(-5) mole caffeine. This study also demonstrated that both methylxanthines specifically induce aneurysms of the ascending aorta and complete absence (or nearly complete constriction) of the right ductus arteriosus. The incidences of these types of cardiovascular malformations proved to be dose dependent with theophylline a more potent teratogen than caffeine. The mobilization of calcium and/or cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase inhibition by the methylxanthines are suggested as significant actions in the potentiation of catecholamine-induced aortic arch anomalies.  相似文献

This study investigated the environmental restoration effects of Ranunculus sceleratus in a sewage system microcosm trial, including the removal of pollutants and algal inhibition. We compared the removal of pollutants by R. sceleratus in a eutrophic sewage system in the presence and the absence of algae. The rate of removal without algae was 16.2–20.5% of that with algae. NH4+N was removed most readily by R. sceleratus. The effects of R. sceleratus on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa were also investigated in two allelopathic modes. The level of algal inhibition after the addition of an extract of Ranunculus scleratus was 57.1–78.9% greater than that in a co-culture test. To understand the role of allelopathy interference with algal development, we also determined the total flavonoid contents of plants, which ranged from 3.57 g to 20.19 g per plant. The cell density of Microcystis aeruginosa was negatively correlated with the total flavonoids in R. sceleratus, although aquatic macrophytes may contain other allelochemicals involved with algal inhibition in addition to flavonoid compounds. The environmental effects of R. sceleratus were significantly correlated with its growth stage (or water retention time), plant height, and biomass. This study suggests that R. sceleratus has potential for the low-effort and sustainable management of freshwaters, particularly the removal of nutrient pollutants and the reduction of excessive algal growth, which may be attributable to allelochemicals such as flavonoids. The in situ environmental restoration effects of R. sceleratus require further investigation at the ecosystem level.  相似文献
