The spatangoid Cyclaster danicus has been placed in the genus Brissopneustes by previous authors. The material from the Lower Danian of Denmark includes some abnormal individuals with depressed apical area. These have been previously interpreted as females with a marsupium. A study of both normal and abnormal tests indicates that the depressed apical area is not a marsupium but rather a malformation, possibly caused by adverse environmental conditions or by a parasite. The skeletal morphology indicates that C. danicus was a shallow burrowing form but the malformed individuals probably did not burrow.  相似文献

Larvae of the deep-sea lanternfish genus Hygophum (Myctophidae) exhibit a remarkable morphological diversity that is quite unexpected, considering their homogeneous adult morphology. In an attempt to elucidate the evolutionary patterns of such larval morphological diversity, nucleotide sequences of a portion of the mitochondrially encoded 16S ribosomal RNA gene were determined for seven Hygophum species and three outgroup taxa. Secondary structure-based alignment resulted in a character matrix consisting of 1172 bp of unambiguously aligned sequences, which were subjected to phylogenetic analyses using maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood, and neighbor-joining methods. The resultant tree topologies from the three methods were congruent, with most nodes, including that of the genus Hygophum, being strongly supported by various tree statistics. The most parsimonious reconstruction of the three previously recognized, distinct larval morphs onto the molecular phylogeny revealed that one of the morphs had originated as the common ancestor of the genus, the other two having diversified separately in two subsequent major clades. The patterns of such diversification are discussed in terms of the unusual larval eye morphology and geographic distribution.  相似文献

The three larval instars of Hydraena particeps Perkins, 1981 are described, based on material collected in the field and reared in the laboratory. Illustrations of structural features and chaetotaxy are provided. For the first time the three larval instars of one species of the genus Hydraena are described. Several characters are compared to those of Hydraena hernandoi Fresneda and Lagar from Europe and the North American Hydraena circulata Perkins.  相似文献

Summary The sporocyst and metacercaria of Leucochloridium paradoxum Carus, recovered from Succinea putris L. in Norway, are described and figured. Adults recovered from experimental infection of Taeniopygia guttata (Vieillot) with L. paradoxum metacercariae are described, using results from scanning electron microscopy, and compared with earlier information. The family Leucochloridiidae Poche is revised. Four genera are recognized within the family (i.e. Leucochloridium Carus, 1835; Urogonimus Monticelli, 1888; Urotocus Looss, 1899; Michajlovia Pojmanska, 1973). The larval ecological and morphological characteristics are tabulated for the three genera with known larval stages. The status of the genus Neoleucochloridium Kagan, 1951, is changed, on the grounds of larval similarities with Leucochloridium Carus. This means that within the genus Leucochloridium Carus three subgenera are erected, based primarily on sporocyst characteristics. These are Leucochloridium, Neoleucochloridium and Papilloleucochloridium. The diagnostic larval and adult characters are tabulated. The known larval records of species in the genus Leucochloridium are discussed and revised within the framework of this new classification. ac]19790812  相似文献

Results of comparative analysis of specific features of morphology of larval lanternfishes of the Indo-Pacific genus Triphoturus based on materials from the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean, northwestern Pacific, South China Sea, and the western part of the Indian Ocean, as well as on published data, are provided. Noticeable differences are shown in specific features of pigmentation of larval T. nigrescens (sensu Hulley, 1986) from different parts of the vast range of this species, that may be accounted for by its individual and/or geographic variation and by the collective pattern of this taxon. It is stated that it is necessary to use genetic data for the verification of the taxonomic status of the representatives of the genus. Morphological evidence in favor of the species isolation of T. oculeum and T. microchir based on larval materials is presented. The presence of three morphologically different forms of larval Triphoturus from the eastern Pacific differing in the pattern of body pigmentation that are identified with three nominal species of the genus Triphoturus—T. nigrescens, T. mexicanus, and T. oculeum—is confirmed. The study of specific features of distribution of larvae of these species in southeastern waters of the Pacific Ocean based on our own and published materials revealed the presence of larval T. mexicanus and T. oculeum off Peru, which is supported by data on the presence of adult individuals of both species here.  相似文献

Analysis of the relationships between duration of the pelagic larval stage (as indicated by otolith microstructure), adult size, and the extent of geographic distribution for Indo-West Pacific angelfishes (Pomacanthidae) indicates that neither adult size nor larval duration significantly predicts extent of distribution, either individually or jointly in a multiple regression. These results are robust for both the family as a whole and the genus best represented in our data (Centropyge). If larval duration and adult size do have an effect, it is only jointly and at the genus level. However, larval duration and adult size do correlate significantly and negatively with one another. The operational factor seems to be egg size, which correlates positively with adult size, and negatively with duration of the pelagic larval stage. Similar correlations are evident in both marine invertebrates and at least some other coral-reef fishes, suggesting they are of widespread significance. The limited ability of either reproductive parameter to predict extent of species distribution indicates, first, that even in a group as morphologically conservative as the Indo-West Pacific pomacanthids, neither a two-fold difference between species in larval duration nor a two order of magnitude difference in female fecundity markedly affects extant distributions; and secondly, that either undescribed biological factors or historical constraints are of paramount importance. Available evidence suggests that dispersal abilities of most coral reef fishes, in fact, may be limited, despite the nearly universal occurrence of a pelagic stage in development.  相似文献

The larvae and pupae of most caddisflies (Trichoptera) are aquatic, whereas the adults are terrestrial. However, the trichopteran genus Nothopsyche includes species with terrestrial pre-pupal and pupal stages and with an entirely terrestrial life cycle. The phylogenetic relationships within this genus, inferred from sequences of mitochondrial 16S and nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA genes, suggest that Nothopsyche species were originally aquatic and that a single lineage acquired tolerance to terrestrial habitats at the pre-pupal and pupal stages. In this lineage, N. montivaga became completely terrestrial. In addition, the larval case materials changed from plant matter to sand at one point in the phylogeny of this genus.  相似文献

The presence of embryos in the mantle cavity of Catomerus polymerus, Chamaesipho tasmanica and Chthamalus antennatus was monitored over a two year period. C. polymerus and C. tasmanica show a clearly defined breeding season spanning late autumn, winter and early spring. C. antennatus breeds more continuously throughout the year, with a decline in breeding during the winter. The larval stages of C. polymerus, C. tasmanica and C. antennatus are described from larvae reared in the laboratory. Morphological differences allow each larval stage of the three species to be distinguished without difficulty. Unique larval features permit identification to superfamily, family and genus. The similarities of chthamaloid nauplii to those of lepadomorphs and verrucomorphs and their differences from the nauplii of other balanomorphs are discussed. Larval evidence supports the view that the chthamaloids are related more closely than other balanomorphs to the lepadomorphs, and that the coronuloids and balanoids share a comon derivation from the chthamaloids.  相似文献

To understand the role of body axes in the evolution of larval form, we use the two sea urchins in the genus Heliocidaris, which have distinctly different larval morphologies. Heliocidaris tuberculata is an indirect-developing sea urchin, which forms a pluteus larva, whereas its sister species, Heliocidaris erythrogramma, exhibits direct development and forms a nonfeeding, ovoid larva. Changes along all three larval axes underlie the differences in larval form associated with each developmental mode. Nodal signaling has recently been implicated as important in establishing the dorsal-ventral (D-V) and left-right (L-R) axes in the indirect-developing sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. However, because of changes in morphology and timing of morphogenetic events associated with the D-V and L-R axes, respectively, in H. erythrogramma, it was unclear whether nodal played the same roles during direct development. We show that the expression patterns and functions of nodal during H. erythrogramma development are similar to its roles in indirect-developing sea urchins in both D-V and L-R axes formation. However, there are profound changes in gene expression downstream of nodal signaling along the D-V axis and major heterochronies in the execution of the function of nodal along the L-R axis. These highly modified events are linked to the dramatic modifications of larval morphology that have occurred during the evolution of direct development in H. erythrogramma.

The distribution of embryonic and larval mantles is documented in linguliform and craniiform brachiopods. Criteria are presented for identifying these mantle types. The mantle type is related to planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larval life history patterns. In the Linguliformea and Craniiformea, all Lower Palaeozoic families with adequate preservation had larval mantles, indicating the presence of a planktotrophic larva. Heterochronic changes in the time of mantle origin, from the larval to the embryonic stage of development, has occurred several times. In the Lingulidae this change appears to have taken place at about the time the family originated in the Devonian and has been retained in extant genera. The family Discinidae has also retained a planktotrophic larval stage from the Lower Palaeozic to the present. The extant genus Crania in the Craniidae has a short-lived lecithotrophic larva that lacks a mantle. Through the Lower Jurassic, this family had planktotrophic larvae with a larval shell. During the Upper Jurassic, genera with a lecithotrophic larva that lacked a larval shell began to appear; however, the last genera in this family with a planktotrophic larva and a larval shell did not become extinct until the Tertiary.  相似文献

The genus Hexapanopeus Rathbun, 1898 contains eight species,of which three are found in the Brazilian coast. The larvaldevelopment of two of these species has already been studiedin the laboratory. This article describes in detail the morphologyof the complete larval stages of Hexapanopeus caribbaeus rearedunder laboratory conditions, and the morphology is comparedwith that of the larvae of the other species of the same genus.  相似文献

The genus Cyclope Risso, 1826 (family Nassariidae) has appeared in the fossil record since the Pliocene. Although it is still found today, the teleoconch morphology has never undergone modification, despite the fact that the protoconch morphologies of fossils (multispiral) and living forms (paucispiral) are different. They vary in their embryological and larval development and, hence, are two different species: C. migliorinii (Bevilacqua, 1928), the fossil species, and C. neritea (Linnaeus, 1758), the living species. We discuss the morphologic modifications in the evolution of this genus: the speciation that leads to its appearance and the speciation driving the Pliocene species to the living one. The order and the direction of these changes are based on phylogenetic analysis. No intermediate forms have been found showing a gradual morphological change that could have been worked by natural selection. Our analysis takes as the origin of the morphological novelties the genetic modifications in the ontogenetic processes which resulted in rapid and important phenotypic changes. Both speciation processes are sympatric cladogenetic. The changes that determine the appearance of the genus affect only the teleoconch, not the larval development. The modifications that lead from one species to the other, within the genus Cycope, affect the larval development exclusively. This points to a certain disconnection between the development of the embryo-larval phase and the young-adult formation, such that evolutionary processes could have occurred independently in different ontogenetic stages. The influence of larval ecology in relation to extinction of the ancestor and persistence of the derived species is also analysed. We hypothesize that climatic fluctuations may have affected the planktonic larvae of the fossil species, driving it to extinction. The living species, developing without the planktonic phase, would have resisted these climatic changes. We consider that the mechanisms described as drivers of the evolution of this genus can be of more general validity in prosobranch gastropods.  相似文献

The process of adaptive radiation and convergence, usually regarded as a feature of macro-evolution, can be seen in the mimetic colour patterns of the butterflies within the confines of the South American genus Heliconius. This can be shown by dividing the genus into subgroups on the basis of adult, pupal and larval morphology: the theory that the mimicry between species results solely from close systematic relationships is thereby refuted, as members of the same morphological group can display widely divergent mimetic patterns, and conversely mutual mimics may belong to several different morphological groups. Various forms of parallel and convergent evolution are thought to account for the present pattern of mimicry, the process is known to start even before full speciation has taken place. A new subgenus (Neruda) is created to contain three atypical members of the genus.  相似文献

Three newly discovered larval specimens of the genus Muraenolepis collected from the waters of the western Antarctic Peninsula are described. Knowledge of their natural history is sparse and information about their early life history is based on only a few larval stages. Here, the available literature on larval eel cods is reviewed, and the specimens placed in context.  相似文献

Maternally inherited endosymbiotic bacteria of the genus Wolbachia induce various kinds of reproductive alterations in their arthropod hosts. In a Wolbachia-infected strain of the adzuki bean borer moth, Ostrinia scapulalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), males selectively die during larval development, while females selectively die when Wolbachia are eliminated by antibiotic treatment. We found that naturally occurring Wolbachia in the congener O. furnacalis caused sex-specific lethality similar to that in O. scapulalis. Cytogenetic analyses throughout the entire larval development clarified that the death of males (when infected) and females (when cured) took place mainly during early larval stages. However, some individuals also died after complete formation of larval bodies but before egg hatching, or at late larval stages, even in the penultimate instar. Although the specific timing was highly variable, death of males and females occurred before pupation without exception. The potential association of sex-specific lethality with the sex determination mechanism was also examined and is discussed.  相似文献

The indigenous North American micropterigid genus Epimartyria Walsingham,1898 is revised. Three species are recognized, including Epimartyria auricrinella Walsingham, 1898 which occurs widely over much of the northeastern United States and Canada, a new species, Epimartyria bimaculella Davis & Landry from northwestern United States and Canada, and Epimartyria pardella (Walsingham, 1880) from northern California to northern Oregon. The larva of Epimartyria auricrinella is described in detail, supplemented with illustrations of the external structure of the larval integument. The larval plastron is described and illustrated for Epimartyria, and this is compared with the plastrons of Neomicropteryx Issiki, 1931 and Micropterix Hübner, 1825. COI barcode sequences show that the three species are genetically distinct, congruent with morphological differences. Marked haplotype divergence within some Epimartyria auricrinella populations appears to be unrelated to morphology, geography or phenology.  相似文献

The larval chondrocranium of Spea multiplicata is described, as is the development and adult morphology of the skeleton. There are major modifications to the larval chondrocranium throughout development, including the presence of embryonic trabeculae in young tadpoles and significant reorganization of cartilaginous structures at metamorphosis. The first bone to ossify is the parasphenoid (Stage 35), followed by the presacral neural arches, ilium, and femur (Stage 36). By Stage 39, most of the postcranial elements have begun to ossify. Metamorphic climax is accomplished over three Gosner stages (39-41) and involves major modifications to the chondrocranium, as well as the appearance of three cranial elements (septomaxilla, nasal, and premaxilla). After metamorphosis, the exoccipital, vomer, dentary, angulosplenial, squamosal, pterygoid, sphenethmoid, ischium, and hyoid begin to ossify. The stapes, mentomeckelian, operculum, carpals, and tarsals do not appear until juvenile and adult stages. The development of the hyoid and cartilaginous condensations of the carpals and tarsals are described. In addition, phenotypic plasticity within the genus and the absence of a palatine (= neopalatine) bone are discussed.  相似文献
