The ontogenetic patterns of habitat use and the migratory history of the tapertail anchovy, Coilia mystus, collected in the Changjiang estuary around Chongming Island, China, were studied by examining the environmental signature in the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) fingerprints using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Our results suggest that the migration strategy of C. mystus is much more flexible than supposed in the literature to date. The spring spawning population of C. mystus from the studied area was found to consist of individuals with different migration histories. Although the tapertail anchovy seems to be an anadromous fish that spawns and hatches in a freshwater habitat, it can also use a freshwater environment in non‐spawning seasons. The otolith EPMA of the elemental fingerprint (Sr x‐ray maps and Sr : Ca ratios) is an environmental indicator that can be applied to the migratory ecology of other important diadromous species in China.  相似文献

Otolith elemental (Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, Mn:Ca, Mg:Ca and Rb:Ca) and isotopic (87Sr:86Sr) profiles from several annual cohorts of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were related to the physico‐chemical characteristics (chemical signatures, flow rate, temperature and conductivity) of their natal rivers over an annual hydrological cycle. Only Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca and 87Sr:86Sr in otoliths were determined by their respective ratios in the ambient water. Sr:Ca ratios in stream waters fluctuated strongly on a seasonal basis, but these fluctuations, mainly driven by water flow regimes, were not recorded in the otoliths. Otolith Sr:Ca ratios remained constant during freshwater residency at a given site and were exclusively related to water Sr:Ca ratios during low flow periods. While interannual differences in otolith elemental composition among rivers were observed, this variability was minor compared to geographic variability and did not limit classification of juveniles to their natal stream. Success in discriminating fish from different sites was greatest using Sr isotopes as it remained relatively constant across years at a given location.  相似文献

The migratory history of tapertail anchovy Coilia nasus in the Yangtze River Estuary, China was investigated using otolith Sr:Ca ratios and two-dimensional images of the Sr level from an X-ray electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The results showed that 17 of the 22 young-of-the-year (YOY) specimens had low Sr:Ca ratios (1.2–2.4?×?10?3;1.5?±?0.3?×?10?3) at the central otolith area, indicating their riverine origin and initial freshwater residence. In addition, 11 of the 14 adult specimens had low Sr:Ca ratios (1.3–2.2?×?10?3; 1.7?±?0.4?×?10?3) at the central otolith area but showed alternating changes between high (>4.0?×?10?3) and low (<2.5?×?10?3) values outside of this region, reflecting their riverine origin and the migration between freshwater and estuarine habitats. These 28 specimens represented the anadromous population in this region. The other 5 YOY specimens had high Sr:Ca ratios (3.6–5.9?×?10?3; 4.8?±?0.8?×?10?3) throughout the life history. Similarly, the other 3 adult specimens had high Sr:Ca ratios (4.0–5.7?×?10?3; 4.8?±?0.7?×?10?3) at the central otolith area but showed alternating changes between low and high values outside this region, suggesting that estuarine-origin non-anadromous individuals occurred in this region. The average of the otolith Sr:Ca ratios and Sr level mapping along the life-history transects could be used as a scalar for charting the migratory history of the tapertail anchovy in the Yangtze River Estuary: <2.0?×?10?3 for freshwater residence and 3.5–6.0?×?10?3 for estuarine residence.  相似文献

There is an increasing desire for researchers to use the elemental concentrations in fish otoliths to reconstruct environmental histories of fish. These reconstructions may be plausible due to the unique incorporation of elements into discrete layers of otolith material that correspond to daily growth, and because environmental variables of temperature, salinity, and water chemistry can influence otolith chemistry. However, it is essential to establish exactly how temperature, salinity, and the ambient concentration of elements influence otolith chemistry in order to interpret environmental histories of fish. Using a controlled laboratory experiment we tested the relative and interactive effects of temperature, salinity, and ambient concentration of strontium (Sr) and barium (Ba) on the resulting concentration of Sr and Ba in otoliths of black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (Munro 1949). Salinity and concentration, and temperature and concentration interacted to affect the elemental concentration of Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca in otoliths. Regression analysis revealed that temperature and ambient concentration contributed most to the trend in otolith chemistry for both elements. Importantly, this is the first experiment to combine three environmental variables and assess their effect on otolith chemistry. Based on these results, it should be possible to use changes in the elemental concentration in otoliths to better reconstruct previous environments of temperature, salinity, and ambient water chemistry, which is especially useful when determining occupancy in habitats such as estuaries that display variable environmental characteristics.  相似文献

 We examined the utility of otolith minor and trace element chemistry, assayed with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), as a means of delineating population structure in the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus). We characterized the elemental composition of otoliths collected in 1993 from three locations in Exuma Sound, Bahamas and from Glover Reef, Belize in 1995. A single location in Exuma Sound was sampled in 1994 to test temporal variability in otolith composition. Five elements (Ca, Zn, Sr, Ba and Pb) were routinely detected, at levels significantly above background, by solution-based ICP-MS. Results from analysis of variance of elemental data, expressed as a ratio to Ca, indicated that there were no significant differences among the Exuma locations for any element, but significant variability was found between Glover Reef and the pooled Exuma localities for Zn/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios. Significant inter-annual differences at one Exuma Sound location was restricted to Ba/Ca ratios. Discriminant function analysis correctly classified 86% and 95% of the Belize and pooled Exuma sites, respectively. Otoliths from Belize were characterized by low Zn/Ca and high Ba/Ca and Pb/Ca ratios compared to otoliths from fish collected in Exuma Sound. Although differences in Ba levels may be related to upwelling at Glover Reef, more data are needed to definitely link otolith composition with regional differences in water chemistry. Juvenile trumpeters Pelates sexlineatus , two main prey items (amphipods and polychaetes) and seagrass constituents (detritus, young and old leaves of Zostera capricorni ) were collected from two sites within six estuaries, to compare the spatial variability of elemental composition (Li, Mn, Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb). Average elemental values were lower in the fish otoliths except for Sr. Significant differences in elemental composition of otoliths were detected among estuaries (Mn and Pb). Spatial differences in concentrations of Cd were found in amphipods and polychaetes; the latter also showed differences for Ba and Pb. Detritus and Z. capricorni leaves showed appreciable spatial differences for most of the elements. Spatial variability between sites was generally high. There were differences in the multivariate composition of trace elements found in the otoliths of fish among estuaries. One estuary was consistently separated from the other estuaries in the ordinations. Significant correlations were detected between concentrations of Mn in otoliths and concentrations in prey, Z. capricorni and detritus. A significant relationship was also detected between Pb in otoliths and detritus. There were significant correlations between concentrations of Mn, Sr and Ba in detritus and that in otoliths. The study demonstrated that trophic transfer and habitat constituents may be considered as a potential source for some of the elemental accumulation in fish otoliths.  相似文献

Temporal patterns in otolith Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratio values of American eels Anguilla rostrata from two sites in western Newfoundland gave insight into the use of freshwater and saline habitats. Mean Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values at the core zone did not differ between sites, indicative of a common oceanic origin. At the otolith edge, representing continental life, both Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values varied between sites consistent with ambient element:Ca ratio values and salinity, with typically higher Sr:Ca and lower Ba:Ca values in saline than in fresh waters. Most eels (73%) from Muddy Hole, an estuarine site, were evaluated as estuarine residents while most (70%) eels from Castors River, a freshwater site, were evaluated as freshwater residents, with the remaining eels from each site evaluated as inter-habitat migrants. An otolith element:Ca critical value appropriate for distinguishing between fresh and saline water residence is fundamental for estimating the proportion of eel residence in freshwater and their subsequent classification into habitat residence groups. Such classification is moderately robust to the critical value selected. For inter-habitat migrants, moderate otolith Sr:Ca values between the elver check and otolith edge suggestive of estuarine residence may coincide with Ba:Ca values suggestive of freshwater residence. No general critical value for separating fresh and estuarine habitats was found for otolith Ba:Ca. Otolith Ba:Ca temporal patterns may assist the use of Sr:Ca in the evaluation of historical habitat residence and inter-habitat movement but the use of otolith Ba:Ca values should be applied cautiously for American eels and perhaps of other estuarine/freshwater migratory fishes.  相似文献

Ambient strontium:calcium (Sr:Ca) concentrations were determined at the temporal scales of months, weeks and days, in summer and winter at two estuarine sites, and experimentally derived correlations between ambient and otolith Sr:Ca were used to estimate the otolith Sr:Ca concentrations of 'resident' black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri . Wild black bream were collected in summer and winter at the end of the temporal water sampling, and their otolith Sr:Ca concentrations were examined. Wild fish were classified as 'resident' if their otolith Sr:Ca matched the predicted concentrations of resident fish, and 'migrant' if this did not occur. In winter, all fish were classified as resident. In summer, all fish were classified as migrants, with fish spending an average of only 16·8% (estuary 1) and 61·1% (estuary 2) of their time at each estuarine location.  相似文献

Trace element and fork length ( L F) frequency analyses of eulachon Thaleichthys pacificus otoliths were used to determine age at maturity and repeat spawning potential, two aspects of eulachon life history that are not known but are important for successful management of this species. The L F-frequency analysis for ocean caught and spawning eulachon was used to estimate age at maturation. Two size classes of eulachon were caught in the ocean and spawning eulachon were consistently the largest fish indicating that spawners from mid-coast of British Columbia were 3 years old. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was also used to reconstruct the Ba:Ca and Sr:Ca molar ratios deposited spatially into the otolith to estimate spawner age for five populations of eulachon. Age at maturation differed among populations examined. Based on the seasonal fluctuations in Ba:Ca molar ratios caused by seasonal upwelling of deep waters, it was determined that more southerly populations spawned at a younger age than the northern populations examined. Southern populations of eulachon, Columbia River, Washington, U.S.A., spawn after 2 years. Eulachon from the Fraser, Kemano and Skeena Rivers in British Columbia, Canada, generally mature after 3 years. Some Skeena River eulachon and most of the eulachon from the Copper River, Alaska, U.S.A., matured after 4 years. In contrast to the Ba:Ca molar ratios in the otolith, Sr:Ca molar ratios maintained a relatively flat profile over the life of the eulachon. The lack of a change in Sr:Ca ratios within the otolith, the single size class of spawners across all systems and the single age class within most populations strongly suggest that eulachon in the present study are semelparous.  相似文献

The biology and the behaviour of fish populations in hypersaline environments are poorly known. The habitat occupation strategy of the tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron has been studied along a salinity gradient in the Saloum hypersaline estuary in Senegal (salinity between 32 and 100). The individual migratory behaviour has been analysed from otolith strontium-to-calcium concentration ratios from fish sampled in five locations during the 2003 wet season and the 2004 dry season. In the upper part of the estuary (salinities > 50), the Sr:Ca ratio in the otolith showed high variations, from 2.51 to 33.30 × 10−3. These maximum observed values have never been reported in the literature. The individual mean of Sr:Ca ratios increased according to the salinity gradient in the estuary, with significantly higher values in the upper part (Sr:Ca mean = 16 × 10−3) than in the lower part (salinity < 50, Sr:Ca mean = 12 × 10−3). No significant difference in the Sr:Ca mean was observed between locations with comparable salinities. Sr concentration in the water at the different locations was positively correlated with ambient salinity. The mean of Sr:Ca in the otoliths was then in relationship with the level of Sr in the water. Thus, the Sr:Ca ratios in the otolith of S. melanotheron allowed to discriminate the populations of this species and to hypothesize that they did not undertake large scale movements within the estuary.  相似文献

We evaluated the spatial and temporal scales over which otolith signatures varied in a reef fish on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) using the non-dispersing damselfish Acanthochromis polyacanthus. We found a robust multi-element separation in otolith signatures from reef clusters in the northern and southern GBR. Variance components indicated that this spatial scale accounted for the majority of the variation in two elemental ratios (Ba/Ca and Sr/Ca) over the 2 years of the study. There was also significant variation in elemental signatures between otoliths collected over two consecutive years, as well as within a season. Individual reefs within clusters were less distinguishable based on otolith chemistry and were probably observed by differences within reefs (among sites and broods within sites). These results indicate that it may be difficult to determine the reef of origin for individual fish using otolith chemistry, while determining natal region seems a realistic goal.  相似文献

The elements Na, Mg, Mn, Ca, Sr and Ba in otoliths of southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii , collected from their feeding ground in the central Indian Ocean and spawning ground between southern Java and north-western Australia were measured by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) and compared among sampling locations and developmental stages. The Na, Mg and Mn to Ca concentration ratios were significantly higher at the larval stage than at the adult stage, and the ratio reached a peak at the first inflection point of the otolith, mean ± s.d. 43·3 ± 4·9 days after hatching and decreased sharply to a low level thereafter. The temporal change of the elements:Ca ratios in the first inflection point corresponded to the life stage transition from larva to juvenile, indicating that the uptake rate of elements from ambient waters was significantly influenced by the ontogenetic change in the fish. The elemental composition at the otolith edge differed significantly in sub-adults on the feeding grounds and adults on the spawning grounds. Thus, the otolith elemental composition can be used as a biological tracer to study the time of the ontogenetic shift and to reconstruct the past migratory environmental history of T. maccoyii . In addition, the elemental composition of the otolith core of the adult was similar between feeding and spawning grounds, indicating that the fish in the Indian Ocean had the same larval origin, which is consistent with the single spawning population hypothesis.  相似文献

Patterns of Sr/Ca variability in fish otoliths have been widely applied as tracers of movement between freshwater and marine habitats, with the assumption that low salinity habitats correspond to lower otolith levels of Sr/Ca. On the other hand, fluvial estuaries can contain steep gradients in Sr/Ca, and in some estuaries, freshwater values of Sr/Ca can exceed marine values, which are relatively constant across marine habitats. Therefore, to interpret Sr/Ca variability in otoliths of fish that move through estuaries, information is needed about both the incorporation of strontium into otoliths and the nature of the gradient of Sr/Ca in the water. We conducted four experiments to evaluate the incorporation of strontium into fish otoliths under estuarine conditions, using white perch (Morone americana) as a model estuarine fish. One laboratory and the two field experiments tested the relationship between Sr/Ca in the otolith and that in the water. A fourth experiment investigated the effect of salinity, independently of the water chemistry (Sr was manipulated while maintaining a constant salinity and Ca level). All four experiments supported a direct relationship between Sr/Ca in the otolith and the water, across a range of estuarine salinities. Results also indicated that the incorporation of strontium into otoliths of estuarine fishes should be constant across broad gradients of Sr/Ca in estuarine waters. While the experiments supported past applications of tracing estuarine and diadromous movements with otolith Sr/Ca chronologies, we emphasize the need to understand the underlying nature of Sr/Ca gradients in estuaries, which may limit or confound reconstructions of estuarine habitat use.  相似文献

Synopsis In order to determine whether the trace element composition in otolith of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica could be used to determine its habitat use, we used laser ablation inductivity coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to assay sectioned otoliths of both marine-resident (sea eels) and freshwater-resident (river eels) eels. A close linear relationship in the Sr:Ca ratios between EPMA (X-ray analysis with an electron microprobe) and LA-ICPMS analyses was found, suggesting that the latter technique could be used to separate the marine and freshwater life phases. Elemental signatures in the otolith outside the elver mark showed significant differences in Cr:Ca, Mn:Ca, and Ba:Ca ratios as well as Sr:Ca ratios between sea and river eels. These results indicate that the elemental compositions may reflect environmental variability between marine and fresh water masses. Thus, those elemental ratios determined by LA-ICPMS analysis seem to have the potential to help distinguish the habitat of the eel.  相似文献

Much has been revealed about fish migration, including diadromous behaviour, through the use of otolith chemistry. Manipulative experiments assist with unravelling information on otolith chemical composition and incorporation thereby answering specific questions on diadromous movements. In this study, a laboratory-based experiment was used to determine the relative and interactive effects of salinity and water temperature on the composition of three key elements (Sr, Ba and Mg) within the otolith of a catadromous fish, Percalates novemaculeata, endemic to south-eastern Australia. Otolith incorporation of Sr and Ba was positively related to ambient water concentration, whereas Mg incorporation was not. Sr and Ba increased and decreased significantly across salinity gradients, respectively, with minor positive effects of temperature also being detected. Salinity and temperature interacted to significantly affect the elemental concentration ratios for Ba: Ca in otoliths. Discrimination between fresh water and marine environments shows promise for interpreting P. novemaculeata residency based on these elements alone. However, deciphering finer scale movements within estuarine environments may be difficult. Our data highlights the importance of multifactorial validation experiments and suggests complementary use of multiple approaches for unravelling species-specific patterns of fish movement and habitat use.  相似文献

Sakhalin taimen (Parahucho perryi) range from the Russian Far East mainland along the Sea of Japan coast, and Sakhalin, Kuril, and Hokkaido Islands and are considered to primarily be an anadromous species. We used otolith strontium-to-calcium ratios (Sr/Ca) to determine the chronology of migration between freshwater and saltwater and identify migratory contingents of taimen collected from the Koppi River, Russia. In addition, we examined taimen from the Sarufutsu River, Japan and Tumnin River, Russia that were captured in marine waters. Transects of otolith Sr/Ca for the Sarufutsu River fish were consistent with patterns observed in anadromous salmonids. Two fish from the Tumnin River appeared to be recent migrants to saltwater and one fish was characterized by an otolith Sr/Ca transect consistent with marine migration. Using these transects as benchmarks, all Koppi River taimen were classified as freshwater residents. These findings suggest more work is needed to assess life history variability among locations and the role of freshwater productivity in controlling migratory behavior in taimen.  相似文献

Dispersal during the early life history of the anadromous rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax , was examined using assignment testing and mixture analysis of multilocus genotypes and otolith elemental composition. Six spawning areas and associated estuarine nurseries were sampled throughout southeastern Newfoundland. Samples of adults and juveniles isolated by > 25 km displayed moderate genetic differentiation ( F ST ~ 0.05), whereas nearby (< 25 km) spawning and nursery samples displayed low differentiation ( F ST < 0.01). Self-assignment and mixture analysis of adult spawning samples supported the hypothesis of independence of isolated spawning locations (> 80% self-assignment) with nearby runs self-assigning at rates between 50 % and 70%. Assignment and mixture analysis of juveniles using adult baselines indicated high local recruitment at several locations (70–90%). Nearby (< 25 km) estuaries at the head of St Mary's Bay showed mixtures of individuals (i.e. 20–40% assignment to adjacent spawning location). Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry transects across otoliths of spawning adults of unknown dispersal history were used to estimate dispersal among estuaries across the first year of life. Single-element trends and multivariate discriminant function analysis (Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca) classified the majority of samples as estuarine suggesting limited movement between estuaries (< 0.5%). The mixtures of juveniles evident in the genetic data at nearby sites and a lack of evidence of straying in the otolith data support a hypothesis of selective mortality of immigrants. If indeed selective mortality of immigrants reduces the survivorship of dispersers, estimates of dispersal in marine environments that neglect survival may significantly overestimate gene flow.  相似文献

Otolith chemistry was used to study the stock structure of Channa punctata collected from the River Ganga and its tributaries, the rivers Yamuna and Gomti. Whole sagittal otoliths were subjected to acid digestion to analyse the trace elements (Ca, Na, Mg, Sr, Mn, Ba, Fe and K) using ICP‐AES. Data were subjected to appropriate statistical treatments, such as univariate anova , ancova , manova and DFA in order to delineate the fish stock(s) accurately. Mean concentrations of Ca, Mg, Sr, Mn, Ba, Fe and K in the otoliths of the fish from selected sites of the different rivers were significantly (P < 0.001) different from each other, while the mean Na concentrations were comparable (P > 0.05). In classification statistics, 96% of individuals were correctly classified to their original groups. The scatter plot of DF‐I vs DF‐II depicted the presence of different stocks in the River Ganga and its selected tributaries. Variations in the microchemistry of the otoliths showed the presence of four C. punctata stocks in the three selected rivers.  相似文献

Because trace elements of otoliths are considered a natural marker capable of recognizing the chemical composition of ambient water and fish migration history, these elements could be potentially used to analyse the movement of reproductive (R) and non-reproductive (NR) mature-sized fish. Supposedly, it is not essential for NR individuals to migrate to rivers for spawning because they do not have developed gonads. To investigate the potential differences in migration history between female R and NR kutum, Rutilus frisii, in the southwest waters of the Caspian Sea, the ratios of Sr, Ba, Mg, Na, K and P to Ca in otoliths (from the core to the edge) were examined using laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. In NR fish, a significant increase in Sr:Ca ratio in the otoliths' growth rings, likely due to greater seawater residency, and an increase in Ba:Ca ratio in the last two rings were observed. Increased Ba:Ca ratio could be due to the movement of NR mature-sized fish to the coastal zones for foraging. Seasonal physiological factors such as gonad maturation and spawning activity are more likely to be involved in differences in the other elemental ratios (Mg, Na, K and P). These results suggest that microchemical analyses of growth rings of otolith can be used as a valuable tool for better understanding the movement pattern of different types of adult fish, which could be completed with data from other methods like tagging.  相似文献
