The course and clinical appearance of an Eimeria species infection in chicken flocks depend on the response of an individual bird to infection and on population-dynamics of the infection in the flock. Differences in ingested numbers of oocysts may affect oocyst load in the flock and the subsequent infectious dose for not yet infected birds. To study the link between numbers of oocysts excreted by infected birds and transmission of Eimeria acervulina, experiments were carried out with 42 pairs of broiler chickens using inoculation doses with 5, 50, 500 or 50,000 sporulated oocysts. In each pair one bird was inoculated and the other bird was contact-exposed. All contact birds became infected, which occurred on average within 34 h after exposure to an inoculated bird. Although a higher inoculation dose resulted in higher oocyst excretion in inoculated and contact-infected birds, only small non-significant differences in transmission rates between groups were found.  相似文献

Infection age is often an important factor in epidemic dynamics. In order to realistically analyze the spreading mechanism and dynamical behavior of epidemic diseases, in this paper, a generalized disease transmission model of SIS type with age-dependent infection and birth and death on a heterogeneous network is discussed. The model allows the infection and recovery rates to vary and depend on the age of infection, the time since an individual becomes infected. We address uniform persistence and find that the model has the sharp threshold property, that is, for the basic reproduction number less than one, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, while for the basic reproduction number is above one, a Lyapunov functional is used to show that the endemic equilibrium is globally stable. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate and complement the main results. The disease dynamics rely not only on the network structure, but also on an age-dependent factor (for some key functions concerned in the model).  相似文献

Both the population and coevolutionary dynamics of hereditary male-lethal endosymbionts, found in a wide range of insect species, depend on host fitness and endosymbiont transmission rates. This paper reports on fitness effects and transmission rates in three lines of Drosophila willistoni infected with either male-lethal spiroplasmas or a spontaneous nonmale-lethal mutant. Overall fitness measures were reduced or unaffected by the infection; however, some infected females produced more offspring in early broods. Maternal transmission rates were high, but imperfect, and varied with a female's age, host line, and spiroplasma type. No evidence for paternal or horizontal transmission was found. If an altered temporal pattern of reproduction is not a factor in countering the loss of spiroplasma hosts through imperfect maternal transmission, persistence of this endoparasitism remains unexplained. Tolerance of the infection and ability to transmit bacteria varied with both host and spiroplasma line. Analysis of the interaction between the spontaneous nonmale-lethal mutant and its host suggests this symbiosis has undergone coevolution under laboratory culture.  相似文献

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the most important vector of yellow fever and dengue fever flaviviruses. Ae. aegypti eradication campaigns have not been sustainable and there are no effective vaccines for dengue viruses. Alternative control strategies may depend upon identification of mosquito genes that condition flavivirus susceptibility and may ultimately provide clues for interrupting transmission. Quantitative trait loci affecting the ability of Ae. aegypti to develop a dengue-2 infection in the midgut have been mapped previously. Herein we report on QTL that determine whether mosquitoes with a dengue-2-infected gut can then disseminate the virus to other tissues. A strain selected for high rates of dengue-2 dissemination was crossed to a strain selected for low dissemination rates. QTL were mapped in the F(2) and again in an F(5) advanced intercross line. QTL were detected at 31 cM on chromosome I, at 32 cM on chromosome II, and between 44 and 52 cM on chromosome III. Alleles at these QTL were additive or dominant in determining rates of dengue-2 dissemination and accounted for approximately 45% of the phenotypic variance. The locations of dengue-2 midgut infection and dissemination QTL correspond to those found in earlier studies.  相似文献

The effects of insect cell culture medium supplementation with FBS were investigated. BSA was found to be the factor responsible for the increased baculovirus infection rate of FBS-supplemented cultures in a concentration-dependent form up to 25 g L(-)(1). Lower rates of baculovirus binding to cells were observed with FBS- and BSA-supplemented cultures compared with infections carried out in serum-free media. Virus attachment constants were found to depend on medium matrix composition. An efficiency factor dependent on the medium matrix composition was introduced to account for these effects, and a mathematical model was developed to describe the virus-cell interactions. It was shown that BSA acts by minimizing the nonspecific virus binding leading to an increased cell infection rate. Cell specific Porcine parvovirusvirus-like particles (PPV-VLPs) expression was unaffected by medium supplementation pointing out that BSA and/or FBS affects mainly the initial phase of the baculovirus infection cycle. We examine the dynamics of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as well as therapies that minimize viral load, restore adaptive immunity, and use minimal dosage of anti-HIV drugs. Virtual therapies for wild-type infections are demonstrated; however, the HIV infection is never cured, requiring continued treatment to keep the condition in remission. With high viral turnover and mutation rates, drug-resistant strains of HIV evolve quickly. The ability of optimal therapy to contain drug-resistant strains is shown to depend upon the relative fitness of mutant strains.  相似文献

In this article, the three-dimensional motion of an ion within a molecular channel is discussed for the first time; escape rates from binding sites are calculated using the transition state method. For a given ligand configuration and a particular pore radius the rates depend upon ion size and mass. It is found that the activation energies depend strongly on the ion size, i.e., they increase with decreasing ion radius. In contrast to the rates obtained from the mass dependence alone, the rates depending on both mass and size of the alkali ions yield the completely inverted sequence, namely the Eisenman sequence I.  相似文献

Leaf-inhabiting endophytic fungi of Fraxinus excelsior growing in a floodplain forest were isolated during 2008 to investigate vertical community structure, species richness and seasonal variation. The analysis of 848 fungal endophytes from 213 leaves resulted in 50 different species. In the understorey, infection density and species richness were higher than in the crowns of mature trees throughout the whole vegetation period. Within tree crowns, sun-exposed leaves of the top canopy exhibited the lowest infection rates. Most species were rare or absent in spring and in the light crowns and frequent in autumn and the understorey. However, some species, especially the two most frequent, Alternaria infectoria and A. alternata, deviated from these patterns. Young leaves were nearly free of endophytes. Apparently, the subsequent infection and establishment of fungi strongly depend on microclimatic parameters and leaf characters, which create highly variable spatial and temporal colonisation patterns within an individual tree.  相似文献

Although CD8+ T cells play an important role in controlling viral infections, boosting specific CD8+ T cells by prophylactic vaccination with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) epitopes fails to provide sterilizing immunity. Viral replication rates and viral contraction rates after the peak viremia hardly depend on the presence of memory CD8+ T cells. To study these paradoxical findings, we parameterize novel mathematical models for acute SIV and human immunodeficiency virus infection. These models explain that failure of vaccination is due to the fact that effector/target ratios are too low during the viral expansion phase. Because CD8+ T cells require cell-to-cell contacts, immune protection requires high effector/target ratios at the primary site of infection. Effector/target ratios become favorable for immune control at the time of the peak in the viral load when the virus becomes limited by other factors, such as the availability of uninfected target cells. At the viral set point, effector/target ratios are much higher, and perturbations of the number of CD8+ effector cells have a large impact on the viral load. Such protective effector/target ratios are difficult to achieve with nucleic acid- or protein-based vaccines.  相似文献

Infectious disease modeling of social contagion in networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Many behavioral phenomena have been found to spread interpersonally through social networks, in a manner similar to infectious diseases. An important difference between social contagion and traditional infectious diseases, however, is that behavioral phenomena can be acquired by non-social mechanisms as well as through social transmission. We introduce a novel theoretical framework for studying these phenomena (the SISa model) by adapting a classic disease model to include the possibility for 'automatic' (or 'spontaneous') non-social infection. We provide an example of the use of this framework by examining the spread of obesity in the Framingham Heart Study Network. The interaction assumptions of the model are validated using longitudinal network transmission data. We find that the current rate of becoming obese is 2 per year and increases by 0.5 percentage points for each obese social contact. The rate of recovering from obesity is 4 per year, and does not depend on the number of non-obese contacts. The model predicts a long-term obesity prevalence of approximately 42, and can be used to evaluate the effect of different interventions on steady-state obesity. Model predictions quantitatively reproduce the actual historical time course for the prevalence of obesity. We find that since the 1970s, the rate of recovery from obesity has remained relatively constant, while the rates of both spontaneous infection and transmission have steadily increased over time. This suggests that the obesity epidemic may be driven by increasing rates of becoming obese, both spontaneously and transmissively, rather than by decreasing rates of losing weight. A key feature of the SISa model is its ability to characterize the relative importance of social transmission by quantitatively comparing rates of spontaneous versus contagious infection. It provides a theoretical framework for studying the interpersonal spread of any state that may also arise spontaneously, such as emotions, behaviors, health states, ideas or diseases with reservoirs.  相似文献

A comparison of simple probability analytic model of infection rate depending on host's age with natural infection rate of mussels (Bivalvia: Mythilidae) with metacercariae Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomidae) was carried out. Data on the natural rate of infection were accumulated during 3 years; 1152 individuals M. edulis were collected in two horizons within fucoid zone of the Kruglaya inlet and the Chupa inlet of the Kandalaksha bay (White Sea). A size of shell and number of H. elongata metacercariae were defined for each mussel using compressive dissection technique. The infection of mussels per year within our model is considers as independent evens: Pn = 1 - (1 - p)n, where n is the age of mussels, Pn is the theoretical part of infected n-year mussels, p is the probability of infection within one year. The probability of infection within year is assumed equal for every age of host. The estimate of probability of infection per year on the basis of sample of n-year's mussels was calculated as Pn = 1 - n square root of 1 - I(n), where n is the age of mussels, I(n) is the part of infected n-year mussels. The retransformed weighted average value of aresine-transformed p'n was used as p in our model (p = 0.3476). Statistically significant differences between empirical and theoretical (calculated from our models on the basis this value) infection rates were not found (P > > 0.05 chi 2-test). Moreover, statistical significant differences were absent (P > 0.05 Fisher exact test) in pairwise comparisons between empirical and theoretical infection rates for each age of mussels. The model does not take into consideration an effect of such factors as host's resistance, host's migration and increase of mortality in infected hosts. The absence of significant differences between the empirical and theoretical infection rates allows to suggest, that mentioned factors under the conditions of the Kruglaya inlet do not influence essentially onto infection of mussels with metacercariae H. elongata. This conclusions is in certain inconsistency with essential differences in such characteristic as an individual resistance of mussels to the infection with metacercariae H. elongata, detected in experiments in vitro (Gorbushin, Levakin, unpublished data). Analysis of intensity of the invasion of metacercariae H. elongata into mussels allows to suggest the existence of differential death rate of the hosts, which is exhibited in individuals over 7 years old. Studied example of mussels infected with metacercariae H. elongata under conditions of the Kruglaya inlet shows that the simple probabilistic model of the natural infection rate is usable for this kind of investigation. Our study also allows to conclude that in this case the infection rate of hosts is mainly determined by stochastic reasons. However, in some cases the probability of infection rate may not depend on the age and size of the host. The study of infection rate can not be used for analyses of individual differences of hosts in a resistance to parasites and an infection ability of the parasite.  相似文献

The role of the complement system in containment of feline leukemia virus infection was studied by cobra venom factor treatment of feline leukemia virus-immune cats. One to three weeks after cobra venom factor treatment, an increase in viral antigen in marrow myelomonocytic cells and circulating immune complexes was noted. Replication of viral RNA genomes in fruit flies and mosquitoes induces the production of virus-derived small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to specifically reduce virus accumulation by RNA interference (RNAi). However, it is unknown whether the RNA-based antiviral immunity (RVI) is sufficiently potent to terminate infection in adult insects as occurs in cell culture. We show here that, in contrast to robust infection by Flock house virus (FHV), infection with an FHV mutant (FHVΔB2) unable to express its RNAi suppressor protein B2 was rapidly terminated in adult flies. FHVΔB2 replicated to high levels and induced high mortality rates in dicer-2 and argonaute-2 mutant flies that are RNAi defective, demonstrating that successful infection of adult Drosophila requires a virus-encoded activity to suppress RVI. Drosophila RVI may depend on the RNAi activity of viral siRNAs since efficient FHVΔB2 infection occurred in argonaute-2 and r2d2 mutant flies despite massive production of viral siRNAs. However, RVI appears to be insensitive to the relative abundance of viral siRNAs since FHVΔB2 infection was terminated in flies carrying a partial loss-of-function mutation in loquacious required for viral siRNA biogenesis. Deep sequencing revealed a low-abundance population of Dicer-2-dependent viral siRNAs accompanying FHVΔB2 infection arrest in RVI-competent flies that included an approximately equal ratio of positive and negative strands. Surprisingly, viral small RNAs became strongly biased for positive strands at later stages of infection in RVI-compromised flies due to genetic or viral suppression of RNAi. We propose that degradation of the asymmetrically produced viral positive-strand RNAs associated with abundant virus accumulation contributes to the positive-strand bias of viral small RNAs.  相似文献

应用本室先后建立的酶联免疫吸附法和核酸打点杂交法,检测我国25省布自治区、16个不同民族共9 758例乙型肝炎病毒感染者中的丁型肝炎病毒抗原、抗体和核酸。其中乙型肝炎病人4 714例,HBsAg慢性携带者5 044例。病人和携带者中丁型肝炎抗原阳性率分别为4.25%和3.0%,丁型肝炎抗体阳性率分别为1.46%和1.18%,丁型肝炎病毒核酸阳住率分别为3.70%和2.2%。在不同地区不同民族丁型肝炎的这些指标有一定差异。在16个民族中,维吾尔族、蒙族和藏族丁型肝炎抗体阳性率明显高于其他民族,黎族丁型肝炎核酸阳性率高于其他民族。但在1136例不同临床型乙型肝炎病人中,丁型肝炎感染率无明显区别。丁型肝炎感染与暴发性肝炎的关系有待进一步研究。  相似文献

The probability that an observed infection has been transmitted from a particular member of a set of potential infectors is calculated. The calculations only use knowledge of the times of infection. It is shown that the probabilities depend on individual variability in latent and infectious times. The analysis are based on different background information and different assumptions on the progress of infectivity. The results are illustrated by numerical calculations and simulations.  相似文献

We studied the effects of epiphytic and endophytic phyllosphere fungi and pathogenic birch rust fungus infection of mountain birch Betula pubescens ssp czerepanovit trees on the larval performance of leaf beetle Phratora potaris We assessed the effects of epiphytic fungi by growing larvae on leaves from trees with manipulated fungal densities We also monitored larval perfonnance and endophytic fungal densities among tree groups classified by herbivory or rust fungus densities The differences in expenmentally manipulated epiphytic fungal densities did not affect larval relative growth rates (RGR) of the species, instead we found significant tree effects Phratora polaris RGR was higher on trees with high level of herbivory than on trees with low herbivory, nevertheless, endophyte densities between these groupings did not differ In the rust fungus expenment, P polarts performance was lowest on trees with low infection compared to no and high infection trees We also did not find correlations among tree-specific endophyte densities and P polaris performance on high and low herbivory trees and trees classified by rust fungus infection Although antagonism among fungi and induction of tree defences cannot be excluded, we suggest that epiphytic and endophytic fungi of mountain birch have negligible effects on P polaris larval performance under natural conditions, probably due to mountain birch variability and a loose ecological connection between mountain birch and its epi- and endophytes Mountain birch and pathogenic birch rust have a more tightly linked relationship, which may also affect insect herbivores Still, leaf properties may play an important role and the effects will depend on the relative timing of the rust infection, herbivore development and changes in leaf quality  相似文献

The stimulating influence of glucose-containing muramyldipeptide (GMDP) on the nonspecific resistance of mice was shown to depend on the features of the pathogenesis of the infection. Thus, the intraperitoneal injection of GMDP increased the survival rate of mice infected with Escherichia coli, but had no stimulating effect on the resistance of the animals to Salmonella typhimurium natural infection in whose pathogenesis macrophages played an essential role. Experiments demonstrated that GMDP was capable of enhancing the ingestive function of macrophages, but did not increase their bactericidal activity with respect to this infection.  相似文献

1. A critical need in conservation biology is to determine which species are most vulnerable to extinction. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionacea) are one of the most imperilled faunal groups globally. Freshwater mussel larvae are ectoparasites on fish and depend on the movement of their hosts to maintain connectivity among local populations in a metapopulation. 2. I calculated local colonisation and extinction rates for 16 mussel species from 14 local populations in the Red River drainage of Oklahoma and Texas, U.S. I used general linear models and AIC comparisons to determine which mussel life history traits best predicted local colonisation and extinction rates. 3. Traits related to larval dispersal ability (host infection mode, whether a mussel species was a host generalist or specialist) were the best predictors of local colonisation. 4. Traits related to local population size (regional abundance, time spent brooding) were the best predictors of local extinction. The group of fish species used as hosts by mussels also predicted local extinction and was probably related to habitat fragmentation and host dispersal abilities. 5. Overall, local extinction rates exceeded local colonisation rates, indicating that local populations are becoming increasingly isolated and suffering an ‘extinction debt’. This study demonstrates that analysis of species traits can be used to predict local colonisation and extinction patterns and provide insight into the long‐term persistence of populations.  相似文献

Intracellular bacterial pathogens depend on acquisition of iron for their success as pathogens. The host cell requires iron as an essential component for cellular functions that include innate immune defense mechanisms. The transferrin receptor TfR1 plays an important part for delivering iron to the host cell during infection. Its expression can be modulated by infection, but its essentiality for bacterial intracellular survival has not been directly investigated.  相似文献
