Fifteen fecal samples from peacocks (Pavo cristatus) in Saudi Arabia contained oocysts of Eimeria riyadhae n. sp. in two peacocks and oocysts of E. arabica n. sp. in one peacock. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria riyadhae are ellipsoidal, 27–30.5 times 20.5–25 (28.8 ± 1.3 × 22.4 ± 1.6) μm, with a two-layered wall and bilobed polar body, but without a micropyle or residuum. The sporocysts are ovoid, 11–14.5 × 6.5–8 (13.2 ± 1.2 × 7.2 ± 0.6) μm with a thick, knob-like Stieda body and a residuum. Sporulated oocysts of Eimena arabica are spheroidal, 17.5–21.5 × 17.5–21.5 (19.2 ± 1.6 × 19.2 ± 1.6) μm, with a two-layered wall and two refractile polar bodies, but without a micropyle or residuum. The sporocysts are elongate ovoid, 9.5–12 × 4–6.5 (11.2 ± 0.9 × 5.5 ± 0.88), with a small crescent-shaped Stieda body. The host bird belongs to the order Galliformis.  相似文献

Eimeria tahamensis n. sp. is described from the harlequin quail (Coturnix delegorguei arabica) from Tahama, Saudi Arabia. The sporulated oocysts of E. tahamensis n. sp. are ellipsoid, 36.5–42 × 25.5–29 (41.2 ± 1.34 × 28.4 ± 0.81) μm, with a thick two-layered wall and one polar granule but without a micropyle or an oocyst residuum. The sporocysts are ovoid, 14–16 × 9–11.5 (15.3 ± 0.7 × 10.8 ± 0.64) μm, with a knob-like Stieda body and sporocyst residuum, but without a substiedal body. The sporozoites are often located transversely at the two ends of the sporocysts. The host bird belongs to the order Galliformes.  相似文献

Escherichia coli JM83 {F? ara Δ(lac-proAB) rpsL [?80dΔ(lacZ)M15]} in midlog growth phase at 30 °C were exposed to 60 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field of 3 mT of nonuniform diverging flux, inducing a nonuniform electric field with a maximum intensity of 32 μV/cm using an inductor coil. Exposed and unexposed control cells were maintained at 30.8 ± 0.1 °C and 30.5 ± 0.1 °C, respectively. Quadruplicate samples of exposed and unexposed E. coli cells were simultaneously radiolabeled with 35S-L-methionine at 10 min intervals over 2 hr. Radiochemical incorporation into proteins was analyzed via liquid scintillation counting and by denaturing 12.5% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results showed that E. coli exposed to a 60 Hz magnetic field of 3 mT exhibited no qualitative or quantitative changes in protein synthesis compared to unexposed cells. Thus small prokaryotic cells (less than 2 μm × 0.5 μm) under constant-temperature conditions do not alter their protein synthesis following exposure to 60 Hz magnetic fields at levels at 3 mT. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Phaeocystis spp. cell and colony mass fluxes and their contribution to the vertical particulate organic carbon (POC) export from a wide range of stations were quantified by short-term sediment traps. The compilation of available data, ranging from polar to sub-arctic and boreal regions, revealed that Phaeocystis colonial and single cells frequently are observed in shallow sediment traps at 30–50 m depth (average of 7 ± 11% of POC export). A strong vertical export decline between 40 m and 100 m diminished the contribution of Phaeocystis spp. cell carbon to vertical export of POC to only 3 ± 2% at 100 m depth, with two exceptions (deeper mixed stations). Estimates of potential corresponding mucus contribution increased the average Phaeocystis spp. contribution to <5% of POC export. The vertical flux attenuation efficiency is higher for Phaeocystis spp. than for diatoms. The overall contribution of Phaeocystis spp. to vertical carbon export based on direct investigations of vertical organic carbon export is small.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of 117 species and varieties of Mimulus was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Five major and 8 more tentative, minor types were found based on the differential correlation of aperture type, exine morphology, pollen grain diameter and other characters: type 1—synaperturate, usually ±spiraperturate, exine perforate to microreticulate with supratectal processes; type II—trocolporate, exine microreticulate (IIa and IIb, supratectal processes absent; IIa, mean polar axis 16–19 μm; IIb, mean polar axis 25–35 μrn; IIc, supratectal processes present); type III—tricolpate, colpus membrane ±psilate. exine with supratectal processes (IIIa, exine microreticulate and 1.4–2.0 μm thick, polar axis ≥ 30 μm; 111b, exine densely perforate and 2.2–2.8 μm thick, polar axis ≤ 23 μm); type IV—tricolpate, colpus covered with spinulose granules (operculate), exine microreticulate with supratectal processes; type V—5–7 stephanocolpate (Va and Vb, colpus margins ±straight and nongranular; Va, exine microreticulate with supratectal spinules; Vb, exine perforate with supratectal spinules or spinulose verrucae; Vc, colpus margins ragged and granular, exine microreticulate with supratectal processes). The pollen data correlate well with geographical and macromorphological data and, where the latter are ambiguous, often provide important clues toward the resolution of conflicting interpretations of infrageneric classification and generic delimitation.  相似文献

The swimming velocities of two monotrichous flagellated bacteria were measured by a computer-assisted video tracking method. Tracing the moving path of the individual bacterium revealed that the bacterial cell did not swim continuously in a straight direction, but frequently changed swimming direction and velocity. The average swimming velocities calculated from the 3-sec path were 75.4 ±9.4 μm/sec in four strains of Vibrio cholerae and 513 ±8.4 μm/sec in five strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results suggest that V. cholerae swim faster than P. aeruginosa at 30 C in nutrient broth. This method is useful for a detailed analysis of bacterial movement and moving patterns in different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Two new Myxobolus species were described infecting Brycon orthotaenia from the São Francisco River, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. From a total of 39 B. orthotaenia collected, two specimens (5.1%) exhibited infection of the ovary and 12 specimens (30.8%) displayed infection of the liver. The plasmodia of both Myxobolus species were white and spherical measuring around 1 mm in length. The plasmodium found in the ovary showed mature myxospores, which were oval shaped from the frontal view and measured 9.2–11.0 (9.8 ± 0.4) μm in length, 5.9–6.9 (6.5 ± 0.3) μm in width and 4.6–5 (4.9 ± 0.1) μm in diameter. The two polar capsules were the same size and measured 3.9–6.2 (4.7 ± 0.5) μm in length and 1.8–2.4 (2.1 ± 0.2) μm in width. The polar tubules had 9 coils. The plasmodium found in the liver showed mature myxospores which were ellipsoidal in shape from the frontal view and measured 10.0–11.4 (10.7 ± 0.5) μm in length, 7.3–8.6 (8.1 ± 0.4) μm in width and 5.3–7.0 (6.8 ± 0.4) μm in diameter. The two polar capsules were the same size and measured 4.2–5.4 (4.9 ± 0.3) μm in length and 1.9–2.9 (2.7 ± 0.3) μm in width. The polar tubules had 8 coils. Ultrastructural analysis revealed an asynchronous sporogenesis process, with young developmental myxospore stages more often found in the periphery of the plasmodium and mature myxospores in the centre of the plasmodium. The plasmodial wall was formed by a single membrane which was not surrounded by a layer of host tissue. A thick layer of fibrous material was found in the peripheral ectoplasm close to the plasmodial wall of the plasmodium found in the ovary. Phylogenetic analysis based on the small-subunit ribosomal DNA – ssrDNA sequences and using the closest myxozoan sequences to each one of the species studied here based on previous GenBank data and Henneguya/Myxobolus/Thelohanellus species parasitizing fish from South American, revealed that the new species are grouped in a subclade together with other Myxobolus species parasitizing bryconid hosts.  相似文献

The fine structure and motility of spermatozoa and the composition of the seminal plasma of the perch Perca fluviatilis are investigated by electron microscopy, computer assisted cell motility analysis (CMA) and biochemical methods. The spermatozoon is asymmetrical as the flagellum inserts mediolateral on the nucleus. It lacks an acrosome, has an ovoid head and a small midpiece with one mitochondrion. Sperm motility–initiated in distilled water (10° C)–is characterized as follows: 85·0 ± 2·7% of the spermatozoa are motile, the main swimming type (10 ± 1 s after motility initiation) is the linear motion (61·4 ± 24·4%) and the average swimming velocity is 122·4 ± 21·9 μm s–1. When motility is initiated with NaCl, glucose or sucrose solutions of 100 mosmol kg–1 the percentage of motile spermatozoa and the swimming types are similar as in water, but the swimming velocity (174·0 ± 22·3 μm s–1) is significantly higher. Motility is inhibited by high osmolality of the diluent: when increasing the osmolality of the saline solutions to 350 mosmol kg–1 sperm motility is totally suppressed while potassium (10–40 mmol 1–1) does not affect motility parameters. pH optimum for sperm motility is between pH 7·0 and 8·5. The seminal fluid contains 124·01 ± 21·68 mmol 1–1 sodium, 10·22 ± 1·11 mmol 1–1 potassium and 0·72 ± 0·26 mmol 1–1 calcium. pH is 8·25 ± 0·09, and osmolality 283·90 ± 37·19 mosmol kg–1. The following organic components were determined: monosaccharides (glucose 63 ± 19 μmol 1–1, fructose 54 ± 28 μmol 1–1, galactose 59 ± 25 μmol 1–1), lipids (cholesterol 5·51 ± 6·42 μmol 1–1, triglycerides 72 ± l00 μmol l–1, cholesteryloleate 15–150 μmol 1–1, phosphatidylcholine 26 · 31 μmol 1–1, glycolipids 1–10 mg 100 m1–1), lactate 108 ± 99 μmol 1–1, hydroxybutyrate 102 ± 99 nmol 1–1, choline 59 ± 159 μmol 1–1, protein 344·75 ± 59·06 mg 100m1–1, enzymes (β-d -glucuronidase l.4 ± 0.7 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, protease (caseolytic activity) 1·0 ± 0·6 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, alkaline phosphatase 2520·0 ± 861·0 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, acid phosphatase 44.0 ± 16.0 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase 38·9 ± 86·9 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, lactate dehydrogenase 134·4 ± 69·6 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, butyrylcholine esterase 0·014 ± 0·010 μmol h–1 100 ml–1, adenosine triphosphatase 562·8 ± 665·4 μmol h –1 100 ml–1).  相似文献

Pollen size and exine structure of the following five Onosma L. species from Slovakia and Italy were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy: Onosma echioides, O. tornensis, O. visianii, O. arenaria, and O. pseudoarenaria. Among the taxa studied, O. echioides has the smallest pollen grains in average (10.5–17.5 × 8.0–14.5 μm), and O. pseudoarenaria the largest grains in average (15.3–20.5 × 12.3–16.3 μm). Pollen grains of all 5 species are small sized, 3-syncolporate, subprolate, heteropolar, with ovate equatorial outlines and circular to rounded triangular polar outlines; the tectum is microechinate. A positive correlation is found between pollen size and chromosome number. The value of pollen characters for taxonomic purposes and the position of the taxa studied within the genus Onosma are discussed.  相似文献

A new species of myxozoan, Myxobolus imparfinis n. sp. is described based on material from the gills of Imparfinis mirini (Haseman) (Heptapteridae). Mature myxospores are round, measuring 7.1–8.4 (7.9 ± 0.3) μm in length, 4.5–6.2 (5.5 ± 0.5) μm in width and 3.1–4.2 (3.7 ± 0.3) μm in thickness. The polar capsules are of unequal size, the larger polar capsule measuring 3.4–4.5 (3.9 ± 0.3) μm in length and 1.4–2.0 (1.7 ± 0.1) μm in width and the smaller capsule measuring 3.1–3.8 (3.4 ± 0.2) μm in length and 1.2–1.8 (1.5 ± 0.2) μm in width. The polar filament presents 6–7 coils. Spores had a prevalence of infection of 75% (6/8). In histological analyses we detected the development site of spores in primary filaments, in afferent branchial artery, thus classifying the type of infection to the filamental type and vascular subtype. The phylogenetic analyses of a dataset including species Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 and Henneguya Thélohan, 1892 from South America recovered M. imparfinis n. sp. as a sister species of Myxobolus flavus Carriero, Adriano, Silva, Ceccarelli & Maia, 2013. To our knowledge, this is the first record of a myxozoan species parasitising I. mirini.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of temperature (20, 25 and 30 °C) on fecundity, life span and morphology of the rotifer Brachionus caudatus f. apsteini. For each temperature, short posterior‐spined and long posterior‐spined clones of B. caudatus f. apsteini were individually cultured for up to six generations. The rotifers were fed Chlorella sp. at a density of 1 × 106 cells ml–1. Morphometric data (body size and spine length) were collected. Total number of offspring producing by a single female per life cycle at high temperature was higher than at low temperature. The duration of juvenile period, reproductive period, post‐reproductive period and life span of both clones of B. caudatus f. apsteini decreased with increasing temperature. All offspring of short posterior‐spined clone produce posterior spines at 20 and 25 °C, with an average length of 19.8 ± 6.6 and 11.9 ± 2.6 μm, respectively. In contrast, they cannot develop posterior spines at 30 °C, at which the average length of the posterior spine remnant was 6.4 ± 1.3 μm. On the other hand, all offspring of long posterior‐spined clone have long posterior spines with average lengths of 36.8 ± 6.1, 36.3 ± 5.2 and 36.6 ± 6.2 μm at 20, 25 and 30 °C, respectively. This study indicated that the production of posterior spines can be induced by low temperature and that short posterior‐spined and long posterior‐spined clones are genetically different. In Escherichia coli and other bacteria, MinD, along with MinE and MinC, rapidly oscillates from one pole of the cell to the other controlling the correct placement of the division septum. MinD binds to the membrane through its amphipathic C-terminal α-helix. This binding, promoted by ATP-induced dimerization, may be further enhanced by a consequent attraction of acidic phospholipids and formation of a stable proteolipid domain. In the context of this hypothesis we studied changes in dynamics of a model membrane caused by MinD binding using membrane-embedded fluorescent probes as reporters. A remarkable increase in membrane viscosity and order upon MinD binding to acidic phospholipids was evident from the pyrene and DPH fluorescence changes. This viscosity increase is cooperative with regards to the concentration of MinD-ATP, but not of the ADP form, indicative of dimerization. Moreover, similar changes in the membrane dynamics were demonstrated in the native inverted cytoplasmic membranes of E. coli, with a different depth effect. The mobility of pyrene-labeled phosphatidylglycerol indicated formation of acidic phospholipid-enriched domains in a mixed acidic-zwitterionic membrane at specific MinD/phospholipid ratios. A comparison between MinD from E. coli and Neisseria gonorrhea is also presented.  相似文献

Hemocytes are circulating blood cells that play a crucial function in amphipods and other crustacean immune systems. The hemocytes of the marine tropical amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis have been used for the evaluation of DNA damage and micronuclei, but they have not been characterized in the scientific literature. The aim of this study was to describe the hemolymph cells of P. hawaiensis and study their phagocytotic activity. Basic dyes were used to differentiate the cell types and the presence of lipids. The total hemocyte counts (THCs) and the proportion and sizes of the hemocyte types were determined. Hemolymph was exposed to Escherichia coli for verification of the presence of phagocytosis. Three cell types, all containing lipids, were identified in P. hawaiensis: granulocytes (oval shape, 13.4 × 7.6 μm), semi-granulocytes (oval shape, 14.1 × 7.2 μm), and hyalinocytes (round shape, 9.6 × 7.2 μm). Those three cell types were found in different percentages in males (64.8%, 31.1%, and 4.2%) and females (70.1%, 28.2%, and 1.7%). THCs for males were 9007 ± 3800 cells per individual and 4695 ± 1892 cells per individual for females. The cells of E. coli were phagocytized by the hemocytes. Our findings increased the knowledge of hemocytes in P. hawaiensis and is a step forward in using hemocyte-based immune responses as an endpoint in ecotoxicology.  相似文献

Polar bears, Ursus maritimus, throughout their range, are nutritionally dependent on ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), which are predominantly caught on the sea ice. Other marine prey species are caught and consumed, but less frequently. As the annual sea ice retreats, polar bears throughout their range are forced ashore, where they mostly live off their stored adipose tissue. However, while land-bound they have been observed catching birds and terrestrial mammals. Although polar bears evolved from brown bears (U. arctos), direct observations of polar bears diving for and catching fish have not been reported. Here, we document observations of a young male polar bear catching Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and Fourhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) by diving in Creswell Bay, Nunavut. We recorded six search bouts, where six fish were caught during dives, which were preceded by a snorkel. The average dive and snorkel length was (mean ± SD) 13 ± 5 and 6 ± 2 s, respectively.  相似文献

Of 50 white-throated woodrats (Neotoma albigula) collected from Socorro Co., New Mexico, 21 (42%) had eimerian oocysts in their feces when examined. Of the 21 Neotoma found positive for Eimeria, 19 (90%) harbored a single eimerian species at time of examination. Eimeria albigulae Levine, Ivens & Kruidenier, 1957, was found in 18 (86%), and E. ladronensis n. sp. was found in five (24%) infected woodrats. Sporulated oocysts of E. ladronensis are ellipsoidal, 19–25 × 13–15 (21.4 ± 1.3 × 14.1 ± 1.1) μm, have a smooth wall and one or two polar granules, but lack a micropyle and an oocyst residuum. Sporocysts are tapered at one end, 7–10 × 6–7 (8.5 ± 0.7 × 6.5 ± 0.3) μm, and have a Stieda body and sporocyst residuum, but no substieda body. Prepatent periods for E. albigulae and E. ladronensis n. sp. are 5–6 and 8–9 days, respectively; patent periods are 7–18 and approximately 11 days, respectively.  相似文献
