Millions of coral reef fishes are collected each year for sale on the international aquarium market. Several marine ornamental species, including the Banggai cardinalfish, are biologically unsuitable for large-scale exploitation, yet their trade continues largely unmonitored. With little known about the Banggai cardinalfish or its trade, we interviewed trade participants from north and central Sulawesi, Indonesia, to document the organization, scale, and price structure of the species local collection and sale. Interviews revealed a large and growing commerce in Banggai cardinalfish, with at least 118,000 fish per month being sold in the Banggai region during the study period. Given the scale of the trade, the species restricted geographic range, and its natural susceptibility to exploitation, we propose that long-term monitoring is needed to safeguard Banggai cardinalfish populations and to serve as a much-needed example for monitoring and managing other marine ornamental fishes at risk of over-exploitation.

Dispersal in marine species results from complex interactions between biotic and abiotic factors. Importantly, the pelagic larval phase of most marine species adds a significant degree of complexity. Therefore, a growing body of work is focusing on those rare species that lack a pelagic larval phase (usually brooding species). For such species, large-scale gene flow has been shown to be very low, thus following the expectation of a relationship between realized dispersal and pelagic larval duration. Yet, little is known about the dispersal of those species at very small geographic scales. In this study, we focused on the Banggai Cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderni, a mouthbrooding species that lacks a pelagic larval phase. Based on previously identified microsatellites, we scored 12 populations around the southern island of Bangkulu, in the Banggai Archipelago, Indonesia. While only 60 km in perimeter, we found that this island harbors very distinct populations of P. kauderni. Indeed, assignment tests self-assigned 10 out of those 12 populations. These results mirror the very high level of self-assignment at the level of the entire archipelago, where, out of 13 populations, 70% of the individuals were reassigned to their source population. Therefore, our data show consistency between small and large-scale dispersal. In addition, in light of the recent expansion in the harvesting of this species for the pet trade, our data have important conservation implications.  相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of 11 polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci from a male mouthbrooding coral reef fish, the Banggai cardinalfish Pterapogon kauderni. In a sample of 37 fish from a natural population, polymorphism at these loci ranged from two to 15 alleles, with expected heterozygosities ranging from 0.107 to 0.928, enabling high‐resolution genetic studies of this coral reef fish.  相似文献

The fungiid Heliofungia actiniformis is one of the most popular coral species in the Indonesian aquarium trade, yet information on the biology of this species is limited. H. actiniformis growth rates, population size–frequency distributions and the seasonality of recruitment rates were measured at three replicate sites in the Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi. Growth and population models were applied to estimate coral ages, mortality rates and the size of maximum yield. Growth decreased linearly with polyp size. High numbers of attached polyps budded from clusters of stalks attached to the reef, with each cluster originating from the settlement of a sexually produced larva. Neither the settlement of sexual recruits, nor their asexual budding, showed seasonality. The overall population structure reflected the high mortality rates of young, attached polyps (Z = 0.5–0.6 yr−1), and the much lower mortalities of free-living individuals (Z = 0.05–0.08 yr−1). There were no statistically significant differences in overall mortality rates and the age–frequency distributions of polyps aged 0–15 years between the sites. Differences in the abundance of large H. actiniformis polyps at the three replicate sites were correlated with percent cover of coral rubble. The application of the Beverton and Holt model revealed the highest biomass per H. actiniformis recruit was 12 cm, corresponding to a polyp age of 20 years.  相似文献

We examined the abundances of three common insect herbivores on pure and hybrid pinyon pines along a 250-km transect in west-central Arizona, United States. Using six morphological traits, we developed a hybrid index to classify trees as pure Pinus californiarum, hybrid, or pure Pinus edulis. The insects (the stem-boring moth, Dioryctria albovittella, the scale insect, Matsucoccus acalyptus, and several species of pitch moths that produce wounds on the trunk and branches) exhibited different distributional patterns across tree types. Stem-boring moths were significantly more abundant on trees at hybrid sites compared to trees at pure sites. In addition, within hybrid sites, hybrids supported significantly more moth larvae than pure trees of either species. These two patterns support the hybrid susceptibility hypothesis in which hybrid breakdown results in increased susceptibility to herbivory. In contrast to stem-borers, there were significantly more pitch moth wounds on trees at pure P. californiarum sites than at hybrid and pure P. edulis sites. Within the hybrid zone, pitch moth abundance was equal on pure P. californiarum and hybrids, and both were significantly greater than on pure P. edulis. These within-site comparisons support the dominance hypothesis where hybrid resistance differs from one tree species, but not the other. Scale insects exhibited the most restricted distribution; over the 250 km transect they were found only in the hybrid zone. This supports the hybrid susceptibility and/or the stress hypothesis (i.e., species at the edge of their range suffer greater stress and are more susceptible to herbivory). We summed the mean numbers of these three common herbivores across sites and found that hybrid sites supported 2.1 and 3.9 times more herbivores than pure P. californiarum and P. edulis sites, respectively. Furthermore, tree mortality was on average, 35 times greater within the hybrid zone compared to pure zones of each species and was associated with the cumulative abundance of herbivores (r 2=0.646). Regardless of whether this mortality is due to insect infestation, stress or a combination of both, these results suggest that hybrid zones are important arenas of natural selection.  相似文献

Pterapogon kauderni does not have secondary sexual dimorphism, and has an equal sex ratio (50.8% males:49.2% females). Females first mature at a length of about 34mm. Data from both laboratory-bred and wild-collected eggs and embryos are not consistent with the presence of differential reproductive allocation in this species. Analysis from clutches brooded by wild-collected males shows a significant intra-clutch and among-clutch variation in egg size. Mean individual egg size (diameter, volume, or weight) is not correlated with the size (standard length, head length, or lower jaw length) of the males brooding those eggs. P. kauderni has a lunar reproductive cycle, with a major spawning peak during full moon and a smaller peak during the last quarter. Similarly, it has a major juvenile release (settlement) peak at full moon, with a minor peak at new moon. However, one population, which is located in a site with distinct environmental conditions and which was sampled a year earlier, shows a different reproductive pattern, last quarter being the phase where most of spawn and release events take place.  相似文献

Interspecific aggression between hermatypic corals on Bermudian reefs has been investigated by aquarium and field studies, the latter involving induced interactions, observations from 30 m-2 transects and random SCUBA traverses. Resultant hierarchies, constructed by ranking the abilities of species to damage competitors, show close similarities with each other and with the Jamaican hierarchy at the family level, notwithstanding some differences in the ranking of some species. Only 11% of natural-occurring interactions depart from the aquarium-derived results; in terms of species-pair combinations, 30% show partial or complete inversions from aquarium to field, with most changes involving species close together in the field hierarchy. Circular (intransitive) interactions occur mostly within a network of weakly-aggressive species in both aquarium- and fieldderived hierarchies. While number of potential interactions m-2 varies directly with density, frequency of aggression is positively correlated with coral diversity (species richness), while frequency of no reactions and conspecific fusion (combined) shows a correspondingly negative correlation with diversity. Frequency of aggression does not appear to be depth related. Comparison of aquarium and field hierarchies suggest that digestion by mesenterial filaments is the most important mechanism of aggression under natural conditions. Sweeper tentacle activity is the most likely cause of field reversals involving Madracis mirabilis and Montastrea cavernosa. Other factors, such as stress caused by seasonal environmental extremes, may be responsible for reversals or inconsistent behaviour in other species.  相似文献

After interest in keeping crayfish (Crustacea, Decapoda, Astacida) in home aquaria peaked in the mid-2000s, the aquarium trade has become a novel introduction pathway for non-native crayfish species in Germany. Here, we provide an update on the ornamental crayfish trade approximately one decade after the ‘crayfish hype’ to explore the long-term implications in terms of bio-invasion risk. Specifically, species’ availability in e-commerce and potential invasiveness were assessed and compared to previous studies. Morphological and ecological traits of the offered species were compiled and related to their long-term availability (covering 2005–2015). In July 2015, a total of 31 online shops offered 28 crayfish species, which represents a decline of 24 % in species diversity compared to the late 2000s. The estimated rate of import of new species has considerably flattened and approaches pre-hype values (<1 species year?1). However, the risk associated with the offered species, as assessed by a risk screening tool, has not decreased compared to the late 2000s. Long-term availability in the trade was primarily determined by bright coloration, the ability to reproduce under warm aquarium conditions, and a preference for lentic habitats. Species featuring such traits are likely to persist in the aquarium trade and include four high-risk species, most notably invasive and crayfish plague-carrying red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) and Marmorkrebs (Procambarus fallax f. virginalis). Persistent propagule pressure from aquaria has substantially contributed to the establishment of both species in Germany, stressing the need for more effective pathway management.  相似文献

We tested whether variation in growth of native koa (Acacia koa) forest along a rainfall gradient was attributable to differences in leaf area index (LAI) or to differences in physiological performance per unit of leaf area. Koa stands were studied on western Kauai prior to Hurricane Iniki, and ranged from 500 to 1130 m elevation and from 850 to 1800 mm annual precipitation. Koa stands along the gradient had basal area ranging from 8 to 42 m2/ha, LAI ranging from 1.4 to 5.4, and wood increment ranging from 0.7 to 7.1 tonnes/ha/year. N, P, and K contents by weight of sun leaves (phyllodes) were negatively correlated with specific leaf mass (SLM, g m-2) across sites; on a leaf area basis, N increased whereas P and K decreased with SLM. LAI, aboveground woody biomass increment, and production per unit leaf area (E) increased as phyllode 13C became more negative. The 13C data suggested that intrinsic water-use efficiency (ratio of assimilation to conductance) increased as water availability decreased. In five of the six sites, phyllode P contents increased as LAI increased, but biomass increment and E were not correlated with phyllode nutrient contents, suggesting that productivity was limited more by water than by nutrient availability. Because vapor pressure deficits increased with decreasing elevation, actual water-use efficiency (ratio of assimilation to transpiration) was lower at drier, low-elevation sites. There was a trade-off between intrinsic water-use efficiency and production per unit of canopy N or P across the gradient. In summary, koa responds to water limitation both by reducing stand LAI and by adjusting gas exchange, which results in increased intrinsic water-use efficiency but decreased E.  相似文献

Conditions suitable for the production and regeneration of Pleurotus ostreatus protoplasts from dikaryotic mycelia were examined. Three commercially available muralytic enzymes, including Sigma lysing enzyme, Novozym 234 and Novozym 234 LP, were used for production of protoplasts. Over 2 × 107 protoplasts per gram fresh weight mycelia were obtained within 1.5 h by using each of these three enzymes. The colony regeneration rate was up to 13% on potato-dextrose-agar medium containing 0.8 m mannitol. Genetic transformation was based on positive selection for resistance to hygromycin B (HmB) using the plasmid vector pAN7-1 and accomplished by either electroporation or a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-divalent cation method. P. ostreatus strains used in this study have innate sensitivity to HmB at a critical inhibitory concentration of between 40–50 g/ml. Selection for HmB resistance of this fungus, indicative of transformation, resulted in 3–48 HmB-resistant colonies per microgram of pAN7-1 per 107 viable protoplasts. No significant differences were apparent when either transformation protocol or either P. ostreatus strain was used. The best electrical condition found for the electrotransformation of P. ostreatus is at a field strength of 2.6–2.8 kV/cm with a capacitance of 25F and a parallel resistance of 800 ohms, corresponding to a time constant range of 10–14 ms. To study possible adaptive mechanisms inbred lines from three populations of Plantago major from sites that were found to differ in P availability were compared. In a pot experiment the growth and P uptake either in the presence or absence of Glomus fasciculatum was determined. Under these P-limited conditions it was shown by partitioning the relative growth rate (RGR, in mg g-1 day-1) in the components root weight ratio (RWR, in groots gplant -1), specific P uptake rate (SPUR, in mol P groots -1 day-1), and P-efficiency (PEFF, in mg mol P-1), that the increase in RGR of mycorrhizal infected plants was related to an increase in SPUR, and a decrease in RWR and PEFF. P. major ssp. major had a lower RGR (related to a lower PEFF and SPUR) and a higher RWR than P. major ssp. pleiosperma. In a second experiment three inbred lines were compared upon P depletion in a nutrient solution. The P. major ssp. major line had a lower RGR and higher RWR, and a higher accumulation of P in the roots than the P. major ssp. pleiosperma lines under optimal growing conditions. There were no differences among the inbred lines in the relative contribution of inorganic P to the total P concentration in the shoot. The giant, 3.6-MDa hexagonal bilayer hemoglobin (Hb) of Lumbricus terrestris consist of twelve 213-kDa globin subassemblies, each comprised of three disulfide-bonded trimers and three monomer globin chains, tethered to a central scaffolding of 36–42 linkers L1–L4 (24–32 kDa). It is known to contain 50–80 Ca and 2–4 Cu and Zn; the latter are thought to be responsible for the superoxide dismutase activity of the Hb. Total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to determine the Ca, Cu, and Zn contents of the Hb dissociated at pH 2.2, the globin dodecamer subassembly, and linker subunits L2 and L4. Although the dissociated Hb retained 20 Ca2+ and all the Cu and Zn, the globin subassembly had 0.4 to 3 Ca2+, depending on the method of isolation, and only traces of Cu and Zn. The linkers L2 and L4, isolated by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography at pH 2.2, had 1 Ca per mole and very little Cu and Zn. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry of linker L3 at pH 2.2 and at neutral pH demonstrated avid binding of 1 Ca2+ and additional weaker binding of 7 Ca2+ in the presence of added Ca2+. Based on these and previous results which document the heterogeneous nature of the Ca2+-binding sites in Lumbricus Hb, we propose three classes of Ca2+-binding sites with affinities increasing in the following order: (i) a large number of sites (>100) with affinities lower than EDTA associated with linker L3 and dodecamer subassembly, (ii) 30 sites with affinities higher than EDTA occurring within the cysteine-rich domains of linker L3 and dodecamer subassembly, and (iii) 25 very high affinity sites associated with the linker subunits L1, L2, and L4. It is likely that the low-affinity type (i) sites are the ones involved in the effects of 1–100 mM Group IIA cations on Lumbricus Hb structure and function, namely increased stability of its quaternary structure and increased affinity and cooperativity of its oxygen binding.  相似文献

When histologically examined in utero at 105 hours post coitum embryos from A y /a × A y /a matings contained a mean (± SE) of 122.7 ± 6.5 nuclei per embryo; of these, 30.2 ± 2.4 nuclei were in the inner cell mass (ICM) and 92.5 ± 4.8 nuclei were within trophoblast cells. Embryos from A y /a × a/a matings contained a mean of 141.4 ± 10.6 nuclei per embryo of which 41.7 ± 4.5 nuclei were within the ICM and 99.7 ± 6.9 nuclei were trophoblastic. ICM cell numbers were significantly different between genotypes (P < 0.05) suggesting that homozygous A y allele expression selectively interferes with ICM versus trophoblast cell differentiation during preimplantation development.  相似文献

In three repeated experiments with three different litters of Xenopus laevis (Daudin) tadpoles, three cohorts were reared in an aquarium under the "saw-tooth" magnetic field produced by a television set. Their maturation times are compared with those of three corresponding control cohorts grown in an unexposed aquarium. In the exposed aquarium, the magnetic field amplitude was less than 25 T and the frequency in the extremely-low-frequency and very-low-frequency wavebands. Neither the exposed nor the unexposed cohorts suffered significant mortality and malformations. However, the exposed tadpoles took about 5 days more than the unexposed ones to reach metamorphosis. The differences in mean maturation times between the exposed and control cohorts were extremely significant (P < 0.001). The results show that a biological population can suffer a sublethal effect when exposed to the magnetic field of a TV set for a long time in the course of juvenile life stages, and that this effect can consist of a delay in reaching the adult stage.  相似文献

Changes in the fluoresence ofN-acetyl-N-(5-sulfo-1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (EDANS), being attached to Cys-674 of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase without affecting the catalytic activity, as well as changes in the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence were followed throughout the catalytic cycle by the steady-state measurements and the stopped-flow spectrofluorometry. EDANS-fluorescence changes reflect conformational changes near the ATP binding site in the cytoplasmic domain, while tryptophan-fluorescence changes most probably reflect conformational changes in or near the transmembrane domain in which the Ca2+ binding sites are located. Formation of the phosphoenzyme intermediates (EP) was also followed by the continuous flow-rapid quenching method. The kinetic analysis of EDANS-fluorescence changes andEP formation revealed that, when ATP is added to the calcium-activated enzyme, conformational changes in the ATP binding site occur in three successive reaction steps; conformational change in the calcium enzyme substrate complex, formation of ADP-sensitiveEP, and transition of ADP-sensitiveEP to ADP-insensitiveEP. In contrast, the ATP-induced tryptophan-fluorescence changes occur only in the latter two steps. Paracoccus denitrificans was aerobically grown in chemostat culture with succinate or gluconate as carbon source. Due to the presence of two phosphorylation sites in the respiratory chain and the absence of branching, theoretical P/O ratios of 1.71 and 1.82 were calculated for cells growing respectively with succinate and gluconate as carbon source. Using these data, 95% confidence intervals for the P/O ratio were determined, via a mathematical model, at 0.91–1.15 and 1.00–1.37 for sulphate-limited cultures, with respectively succinate and gluconate as carbon source.These results and measurements of P/O ratios in membrane particles and of proton translocation in whole cells have led to the conclusion that site I phosphorylation is affected under sulphate-limited conditions.Under conditions of carbon source-limitation the endogenous H+/O ratio is about 7–8. Average values of 3.40 and 4.78 were respectively found for sulphate-limited succinate- and gluconate grown cells. For starved cells, oxidizing succinate as exogenous substrate, the H+/O ratios were determined at about 3–4, independent of the growth limiting factor. It is concluded that the number of protons ejected per pair of electrons per energy-conserving site (H+/site ratio) is about 3–4, instead of 2 as postulated by the chemiosmotic hypothesis.  相似文献

Aim To investigate the biological meaning of equations used to apply the general dynamic model (GDM) of oceanic island biogeography proposed by R. J. Whittaker, K. A. Triantis and R. J. Ladle. Location Analyses are presented for 17 animal groups living on the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the central Mediterranean, near Sicily. Methods In addition to the mathematical implementation of the GDM proposed by Whittaker, Triantis and Ladle, and termed here logATT2 (, where S is species number or any other diversity metric, t is island age, A is island area, and a, b, c and d are fitted parameters), a new implementation based on the Arrhenius equation of the species–area relationship (SAR) is investigated. The new model (termed powerATT2) is: . For logATT2 and powerATT2 models, equations were developed to calculate (1) the expected number of species at equilibrium (i.e. when the island has reached maturity) per unit area (Seq), and (2) the time required to obtain this value (teq). Whereas the intercept in the Gleason model (S = C + z log A) or the coefficient of the Arrhenius power model (S = CAz) of the SAR can be considered measures of the expected number of species per unit area, this is not the case for the parameter a of the ATT2 models. However, values of Seq can be used for this purpose. The index of ‘colonization ability’ (CAB), calculated as the ratio , may provide a measure of the mean number of species added per unit area per unit time. Results Both ATT2 models fitted most of the data well, but the powerATT2 model was in most cases superior. Equilibrial values of species richness (Seq) varied from c. 3 species km?2 (reptiles) to 100 species km?2 (mites). The fitted curves for the powerATT2 model showed large variations in d, from 0.03 to 3. However, most groups had values of d around 0.2–0.4, as commonly observed for the z‐values of SARs modelled by a power function. Equilibration times ranged from about 170,000 years to 400,000 years. Mites and springtails had very high values of CAB, thus adding many more species per unit area per unit time than others. Reptiles and phytophagous scarabs showed very low values, being the groups that added fewest species per unit area per unit time. Main conclusions Values of equilibrial species richness per unit area are influenced by species biology (e.g. body size and ecological specialization). Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that higher immigration rates should increase the z‐values of the Arrhenius model. Thus, in the same archipelago, groups with larger z‐values should be characterized by higher dispersal ability. Results obtained here for the parameter d conform to this prediction.  相似文献

Diversity of tree association and forest structure were analysed in relation to microtopography and flooding intensity in a tropical freshwater swamp forest in the Sinnamary river basin, French Guiana. A 530-m-long vegetation transect was established through a hummock-hollow terrain. Nine 10 m× 50 m sample plots, perpendicular to the main transect, were located so that each was as microtopographically uniform as possible. Trees with dbh (diameter at 1.3 m) 10 cm were censused in all plots and trees with 2 cm dbh < 10 cm in three plots. Sixty tree species belonging to 39 genera and 30 families were recorded. The study area was divided into low and high sites according to microtopography and flooding intensity. According to the Czekanowski similarity matrix, the tree association in low, most frequently flooded, sites differed from that in the high sites under intermediate or low flooding intensity. The low sites had higher stand density and lower species richness than the high sites. Trees with dbh 10 cm in low sites were small and stand basal area (SBA) was about the same in low (69.6 m2 ha–1) and high (64.3 m2 ha–1) sites. The low areas were dominated by Pterocarpus officinalis (38% of stems with dbh 10 cm and 36% of SBA) and Malouetia tamaquarina (26 and 15%). Diospyros guianensis (13.4% of stems with dbh 10 cm and 6.1% of SBA), a Caraipa sp. (14.0 and 7.9%), Lecythis corrugata (6.6 and 3.5%) and emergent Caryocar microcarpum (0.9 and 13.9%) were abundant in high sites. Nodulated legume trees, P. officinalis, Hydrochorea corymbosa and Inga disticha, comprised 44% of stems in the low sites. The abundant nodulation suggests that symbiotic dinitrogen fixation may be an adaptation to N-depleted waterlogged soils. Other adaptive responses were litter accumulation between the buttresses of P. officinalis, which formed hummocks above surface water, and clonal growth habit of M. tamaquarina, which resulted in formation of monospecific groves in low sites.  相似文献

The underwater light field in the Bellingshausen andAdmundsen Seas was characterised using data collectedduring the R/V Polarstern cruise ANT XI/3, from12.1.94 to 27.3.94. The euphotic zone varied from 24to 100 m depth. Spectral diffuse vertical attenuationcoefficients (K d ())were determined for 12narrow wavebands as well as for photosyntheticallyavailable radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm): K d (490)ranged from 0.03 to 0.26 m1; K d (550) from0.04 to 0.17 m1; K d (683) from 0.04 to0.17 m1; and K d (PAR) varied from 0.02 to0.25 m1. K d () for wavelengths centred at412 nm, 443 nm, 465 nm, 490 nm, 510 nm, 520 nm and550 nm were significantly correlated with chlorophyllconcentration (ranging from 0.1 to 6 mg m3). Thevertical attenuation coefficients for 340 nm and380 nm ranged from 0.10 to 0.69 m1 and from 0.05to 0.34 m1, respectively, and were also highlycorrelated with chlorophyll concentrations. These K d values indicate that the 1% penetration depthmay reach maxima of 46 m and 92 m for 340 nm and380 nm, respectively. The spectral radiancereflectances (Rr()) for 443 nm, 510 nm and 550 nmwere less than 0.01 sr1. Rr() for 665 nm and683 nm increased with depth up to 0.2 sr1 because ofchlorophyll fluorescence. Using a model that predicts downwardirradiances by taking into account the attenuation bywater and absorption by chlorophyll, we show thatchlorophyll fluorescence has a significant influenceon the red downward irradiance (E d (633, 665, 683))in deeper layers. The ability of the phytoplanktonpopulation to influence the light environment byautofluorescence and absorption processes depends onthe light conditions and on the photoacclimation ofthe cells, represented by the in vivo crosssection absorption coefficient of chlorophyll (a*). Theobtained mean chlorophyll-specific light attenuationcoefficients of phytoplankton in situ (k d ) are higherthan the in vivo absorption coefficient of chlorophyll,more than to be excepted from the scattering. a*(), m2 mg chl1, decreased due topackaging effect with increasing chlorophyllconcentrations.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine age, growth and mortality of the French angelfish Pomacanthus paru. Age was solely determined by sectioned otoliths. All tetracycline‐treated otoliths were 1 year of age and revealed a clear fluorescent mark when observed under UV light. Otolith weight increased exponentially with standard length, and linearly with age, indicating that otolith growth continues with age and is independent of size. Age of fish in the sample ranged from 1 to 27 years. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was TLt = 36.33 (1 ? e?0.12 (t + 0)). Total rate mortality (Z) was estimated to be 0.10. Attaining maximal size slowly, P. paru has a long life expectancy. Most linear growth is achieved within approximately 74% of the lifetime of the fish. Besides being an important ornamental species, P. paru has been commonly captured for decades as bycatch in trap fisheries. These growth parameters should be used with the purpose of managing fisheries targeting this species before more meaningful limits can be imposed. In the aquarium trade management, it is suggested that conservationist issues should be based on capture‐per‐area and the establishment of protected areas.  相似文献
