Aim Although bats of the Caribbean have been studied extensively, previous work is largely restricted to zoogeography, phylogeography or the effects of island characteristics on species richness. Variation among islands in species composition that is related to geographical or environmental variation remains poorly understood for much of the Caribbean. Location Caribbean islands, including the Bahamas, Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles. Methods Using presence–absence data, we assessed the extent to which island area, maximum island elevation, inter‐island distance and hurricane‐induced disturbance affected patterns of composition and nestedness for bats in the Bahamas, Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles. Analyses were conducted for all species, as well as for two broadly defined guilds: carnivores and herbivores. Results For the Bahamas, only inter‐island distance accounted for variation in species composition between islands. For the Greater and Lesser Antilles, differences in island area and inter‐island distance accounted for differences in species composition between islands. Variation in species composition was not related significantly to differences in elevation or hurricane‐related disturbance. In general, results of analyses restricted to a particular broad guild (i.e. carnivores or herbivores) mirrored those for all bats. Bat species composition was nested significantly in each island group. Nestedness was stronger in the Greater Antilles and in the Lesser Antilles than in the Bahamas. Carnivore assemblages were nested significantly in the Greater and in the Lesser Antilles, but not in the Bahamas. In contrast, herbivore assemblages were nested significantly in each island group. Main conclusions Inter‐island distance had a greater effect on compositional similarity of Caribbean bat assemblages than did island area, elevation or disturbance related to hurricanes. Differential immigration and hierarchical habitat distributions associated with elevational relief are likely to be primary causes for nestedness of Caribbean bat assemblages.  相似文献

Twenty-seven islands in the Lesser Antilles contain either one or two species of Anolis lizards. On nine of the ten two-species islands, the species differ substantially in size; 16 of the 17 one-species islands harbor an intermediate-sized species. Two processes could produce such a pattern: size adjustment (or character displacement), in which similar-sized species evolve in different directions in sympatry; and size assortment, in which only different-sized species can successfully colonize the same island together. Previous analyses implicitly have assumed that size is evolutionarily plastic and determined solely by recent ecological conditions, and consequently have tested the hypothesis that character displacement has occurred on each of the ten two-species islands. Other studies have focused only on size assortment. By analyzing such patterns in a phylogenetic context, I explicitly consider historical effects and can distinguish between size adjustment and size assortment. Using a minimum evolution algorithm, I assess evidence for size adjustment by partitioning changes in size along branches of the phylogenetic tree. Size evolution appears rare (a minimum of 4-7 instances of substantial size evolution). In the northern (but not the southern) Lesser Antilles, size change was significantly greater when a descendant taxon occurred on a two-species island and its hypothetical ancestor occurred on a one-species island, thus supporting the size adjustment hypothesis, though size adjustment might have occurred only once. The relative rarity of size evolution suggests that size assortment might be responsible for nonrandom patterns. In both the northern and southern Lesser Antilles, a null model of no size assortment is convincingly rejected. Closely related taxa, however, are usually similar in size, and hybridization between species has been reported. Consequently, similar-sized species might not coexist because they interbreed and coalesce into one gene pool. A null model that only allows species from different “clades” to co-occur is rejected for the northern Lesser Antilles, but is ambiguous with regard to the southern Lesser Antilles. Thus, competitive exclusion is probably responsible for the pattern of size assortment in the northern Lesser Antilles; both competitive exclusion and interbreeding of closely related species of similar size might be responsible for the patterns evident in the southern Lesser Antilles.  相似文献

Distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrate, phosphate, and silicate observed in the surface waters of Liverpool Bay during a seasonal cycle of cruises in 1975 are presented. Winter distributions were influenced by the proportion of waters from various sources, their chemistry, and the mode of circulation, all of which were temporally variable. Non-winter distributions were additionally influenced by in situ biological activity. Principal component analysis provided a preliminary means of separating and assessing the relative importance of these factors and depicting the centres of biological activity during the non-winter cruises. Different circulation modes in January and December produced distributions with little visual similarity, and patchy nutrient distributions accompanied the spring and autumn phytoplankton blooms. Nitrogen-rich industrial and domestic effluents modified the nutrient availability ratios in the receiving waters so that silicon limited diatom growth over large areas of the Bay in spring. Nitrogen became ‘bio-limiting’ in summer and autumn. The direction of the surface residual circulation before the spring bloom is proposed as the major influence governing subsequent nutrient distributions and phytoplankton populations.  相似文献

This study was aimed at understanding the main abiotic environmental factors controlling the distribution patterns of abundance and composition of phytoplankton (size less than 10 μm) assemblages in the coastal waters of south‐eastern Côte d'Ivoire. Data were collected during two cruises, in January (low‐water period) and October (high‐water period) of 2014. A total of 67 species were identified and assigned to Bacillariophyceae (49%), Cyanophyceae (21%), Chlorophyceae (13%), Euglenophyceae (10%), Dinophyceae (4%) and Chrysophyceae (3%). Three biotic zones (I, IIA and IIB) were distinguishable on a Kohonen self‐organizing map after an unsupervised learning process. The diatom genera Eunotia sp., Navicula sp. and Actinoptychus senarius are significantly associated with I, IIA and IIB biotic zones, respectively. A clear seasonal cum salinity trend was apparent in phytoplankton distribution patterns. Turbidity and nitrate levels were the main abiotic factors controlling phytoplankton distribution in I, the upland tidal regions of the lagoon. In regions along the lagoon–sea continuum, phosphate and turbidity exert the most control during the low‐water season (IIA), while total dissolved solids control phytoplankton distribution during the high‐water season (IIB). These are climate‐sensitive parameters whose concentrations depend on prevailing hydroclimatic processes. Therefore, seasonality can have important consequences on phytoplankton community and inadvertently the productivity of these systems.  相似文献

Ecological factors such as changing climate on land and interspecific competition have been debated as possible causes of postglacial Caribbean extinction. These hypotheses, however, have not been tested against a null model of climate‐driven postglacial area loss. Here, we use a new Quaternary mammal database and deep‐sea bathymetry to estimate species–area relationships (SARs) at present and during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) for bats of the Caribbean, and to model species loss as a function of area loss from rising sea level. Island area was a significant predictor of species richness in the Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and Lesser Antilles at all time periods, except for the Lesser Antilles during the LGM. Parameters of LGM and current SARs were similar in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles, but not the Lesser Antilles, which had fewer estimated species during the LGM than expected given their size. Estimated postglacial species losses in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles were largely explained by inferred area loss from rising sea level in the Holocene. However, there were more species in the Bahamas at present, and fewer species in the smaller Greater Antilles, than expected given island size and the end‐Pleistocene/early Holocene SARs. Poor fossil sampling and ecological factors may explain these departures from the null. Our analyses illustrate the importance of changes in area in explaining patterns of species richness through time and emphasize the role of the SAR as a null hypothesis in explorations of the impact of novel ecological interactions on extinction.  相似文献

We hypothesised that changes in nutritional composition and quality of the pelagic phytoplankton community influence the occurrence of Lesser Flamingo populations in two Kenyan saline–alkaline lakes, Nakuru and Bogoria. This was achieved by carrying out a detailed time series assessment of the phytoplankton community composition and nutritional components (carbohydrates, crude protein and lipids) from July 2008 to October 2009 on a weekly basis for each lake. Lesser Flamingos were estimated visually from the lake shore of the sampling sites. In Lake Nakuru, Lesser Flamingos had a significant positive relationship with lipids and Arthrospira biomass but a negative relationship with small cyanoprokaryotes. For Lake Bogoria, no significant differences were observed as the Arthrospira was available throughout the sampling period though the flamingo numbers still fluctuated. We concluded that the nutritional composition and quality of the phytoplankton community influence the temporal and spatial abundance of Lesser Flamingos although other factors such as the prevailing environmental conditions may take precedence.  相似文献

The phylogeography of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata remains poorly known, although this species is the major vector of schistosomiasis in the New World. It was here investigated in South America and the Lesser Antilles, based on partial mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (16S rDNA) and nuclear internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS-2) gene sequences. Sampling included 17 populations from a large part of the current geographic range of the species (Brazil, Venezuela and Lesser Antilles). Substantial variability was detected, as well as a high amount of phylogenetically informative signal. The molecular phylogeny inferred splits B. glabrata into Northern and Southern clades separated by the Amazon river, and may even suggest a supra-specific status for B. glabrata. Brazilian populations were the most diverse and appeared basal to the other populations. Venezuelan haplotypes formed a single clade, albeit not strongly supported. Two Venezuelan haplotypes appear rather similar to Brazilian haplotypes. Similarly, Lesser Antilles haplotypes clustered in the same monophyletic clade, which suggests that the recent colonisation of the Antilles has a northern South American origin. However, the estimated divergence time between Antilles and Venezuelan sequences is extremely large (conservatively higher than 10(5) years). These results are discussed in the light of (i) phylogeographic patterns at South American scale, and (ii) recurrent introduction of molluscs, especially in the Antilles, as a consequence of human activities.  相似文献

Lizards in the genus Anolis have experienced adaptive radiation in the Greater Antilles, producing a suite of species morphologically adapted to use different parts of the environment. In the Lesser Antilles, adaptive radiation has not occurred, but on some islands, interpopulational variation is high and represents adaptation to different habitats. We compared the extent of morphological differentiation among Greater Antillean habitat specialists with that exhibited among populations of two species, Anolis marmoratus and A. oculatus, from the Lesser Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Dominica. Although extensive, intraspecific divergence in the Lesser Antilles is substantially less in magnitude than the differences among habitat specialists in the Greater Antilles. All populations of A. marmoratus are most similar to Greater Antillean trunk‐crown habitat specialists, but populations of A. oculatus differ in their affinities: some are similar to trunk‐crown anoles, but others are more similar to trunk‐ground habitat specialists.  相似文献

The evolution of body size in Anolis lizards of the Lesser Antilles Islands has been the subject of intensive, if divisive, study. Early research by Schoener revealed a regularity in the number of Anolis species that coexisted on islands and the difference in body size between coexisting congeners in the Northern Lesser Antilles. This consistent pattern of body size was suggested to be the result of competitive character displacement. Two recent studies critically evaluated this hypothesis by incorporating information about the phylogenetic relationships of insular Anolis. Roughgarden and Pacala suggested that the patterns of body-size differences in the Northern Lesser Antilles could be explained as a cyclical phenomenon that they labeled a taxon cycle. However, Losos supported the character-displacement hypothesis (“size adjustment”). The conflict between these two studies is important because both investigations were based on the same phylogenetic hypothesis. We investigated body-size evolution in Lesser Antilles Anolis to resolve the differences in the conclusions of these studies. Our new analysis supported the taxon-cycle hypothesis but nevertheless failed to reject the character-displacement hypothesis. We argue that this curious scenario is largely a function of the method by which phylogenetic information is incorporated in comparative analyses. Different comparative analyses may lead to dramatic differences in results and ambiguity in the conclusions to be drawn. We suggest that ecologists and evolutionary biologists specifically consider the underlying assumptions and models of character evolution inherent to each of the phylogenetically based analytical methods now available.  相似文献

Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) is a small epipelagic oceanic species known only from the western Atlantic. In Tobago, the Lesser Antilles, blackfin tuna is caught by the artisanal fishery. The diet of this species was examined during the summer of 2004 for fish landed at the Charlotteville fish market in Tobago. T. atlanticus ranged from 32 to 91 cm FL (0.7–12.4 kg). Overall numerical abundance of prey items comprised fish (48%), crustaceans (46%) and cephalopods (6%). Prey species included small pelagics such as anchovies (ranked as most important prey overall), juveniles of larger pelagics such as jacks, juveniles of fish found in coral reef communities as adults, e.g. squirrelfishes, and some mesopelagic species. The importance of major diet categories differed significantly with predator size, with fishes becoming more important and crustaceans less important with increasing size of the blackfin tuna. This study has improved our scant knowledge of the blackfin tuna diet in the Lesser Antilles.  相似文献

We examined the species-area relationship for three historically distinct subsets of Lesser Antillean birds identified by molecular phylogenetic analysis of island and continental populations. The groups comprised recent colonists from continental or Greater Antillean source populations, old taxa having recently expanded distributions within the Lesser Antilles, and old endemic taxa lacking evidence of recent dispersal between islands. The number of young taxa was primarily related to distance from the source of colonists in South America. In a multiple regression, the logarithmic slope of the species-area relationship for this group was shallow (0.066+/-0.016). Old endemic taxa were restricted to islands with high elevation, and within this subset, species richness was related primarily to island area, with a steep slope (0.719+/-0.110). The number of recently spread endemic taxa was related primarily to island elevation, apparently reflecting the persistence of such populations on islands with large areas of forested and montane habitats. Historical analysis of the Lesser Antillean avifauna supports the dynamic concept of island biogeography of MacArthur and Wilson, rather than the more static view of David Lack, in that colonists exhibit dispersal limitation and extinction plays a role in shaping patterns of diversity. However, the avifauna of the Lesser Antilles is probably not in equilibrium at present, and the overall species-area relationship might reflect changing proportions of historically distinguishable subsets of species.  相似文献

The surface water layer of a 70 km wide area along the Dutch coast has been sampled monthly from (February) 1973 to (August) 1984, as part of a water quality assessment research. The blooming periods of phytoplankton algae studied, fluctuated from year-to-year, but diatom blooms increased in length in the late 1970s. Dinoflagellates decreased in cell numbers in the same period. The observation of highest cell numbers of some diatoms and dinoflagellates in the lower salinity near coastal waters can be explained by eutrophication effects.  相似文献

Summary Labelling of renal tubule cytosomes with electron dense iron granules can be attained by daily intramuscular injections to mice of an iron sorbitol citric-acid compound in a total of approximately 50 mg Fe+++/100 g of body weight. The labelled cytosomes correspond to secondary lysosomes and represent heterolysosomes or ambilysosomes. The evidence suggests that tubule and lysosome function are undisturbed by the labelling procedure. The use of this method for fine structural studies of the interaction between secondary lysosomes and other cytoplasmic organelles and elements is indicated.Microbodies do not incorporate administered Fe+++. The physical and chemical environment, and the phytoplankton primary production of southeastern Brazil were studied in relation to the general oceanographic structure during two research cruises (winter and summer). In each cruise, a total of 91 stations were occupied. Data were collected on the spatial distribution of nutrients, phytoplankton biomass and photosynthetic capacity over the coastal, shelf and oceanic areas off São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina States.During wintertime, the mixing processes between tropical warm waters of the Brazil Current and subantarctic waters of the Malvinas Current formed strong environmental gradients. The drainings of Rio de La Plata and Lagoa dos Patos are transported northwards by coastal currents, enriching the shelf waters off Santa Catarina State with inorganic nutrients and consequently increasing the chlorophyll a to the highest concentrations (> 3.5 mg m –3) measured during the two cruises. In slope waters chlorophyll values were always low (0.05–0.45 mg m –3). The chlorophyll within the euphotic layer varied from 8.8–36.7 and 1.2–18.5 mg m–2 during winter and summer, respectively.The surface photosynthetic rates during winter and summer cruises ranged respectively from 0.21–9.17 and 0.66–19.60 mgC/mgChl.a/h. The mean rates were higher in nearshore waters and decreased seaward.The thermal structure of the water column affected the vertical distribution of chlorophyll a and photosynthesis within the euphotic zone; During unstratified periods (winter) they were uniformly distributed but the occurrence of subsurface peaks of chlorophyll and strong photosynthetic inhibition of low light adapted cells in deeper layers are associated to the seasonal thermocline. Occasionally, upwelling of deep waters from shelf break enriched the deeper euphotic layers in offshore areas. Intensive upwelling was observed off Paranagua Bay (Parana State) and the mechanisms of its formation are discussed.  相似文献

The volcanic Sulphur Springs, St. Lucia, present an extreme environment due to high temperatures, low pH values, and high concentrations of sulfate and boron. St. Lucia offers some unique geochemical characteristics that may shape the microbial communities within the Sulphur Springs area. We chose six pools representing a range of geochemical characteristics for detailed microbial community analyses. Chemical concentrations varied greatly between sites. Microbial diversity was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene clone library analyses. With the exception of one pool with relatively low concentrations of dissolved ions, microbial diversity was very low, with Aquificales sequences dominating bacterial communities at most pools. The archaeal component of all pools was almost exclusively Acidianus spp. and did not vary between sites with different chemical characteristics. In the pool with the highest boron and sulfate concentrations, only archaeal sequences were detected. Compared with other sulfur springs such as those at Yellowstone, the microbial diversity at St. Lucia is very different, but it is similar to that at the nearby Lesser Antilles island of Montserrat. While high elemental concentrations seem to be related to differences in bacterial diversity here, similarities with other Lesser Antilles sites suggest that there may be a biogeographical component as well.  相似文献

Variously orientated transects through Liverpool Bay in December, 1976, revealed a narrow but steep density discontinuity running north to south through the surface waters. Surface distribution maps from cruises during the winter of 1976–1977 showed that the density discontinuity provided a sharp line of demarcation between the physical and chemical characteristics of the offshore and coastal waters. Over the winter, an accumulation of river discharged nutrients in the waters bounded by the front and the coast generated a large nutrient reservoir in the inshore waters and propagated a difference in the nutrient availability ratios across the front. As a consequence, by March the inshore waters were characterized by lower salinities and temperatures, higher dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations and lower silicon to total nitrogen ratios than the offshore waters. Prior to the 1977 spring phytoplankton bloom in Liverpool Bay, these two contrasting water types were in juxtaposition along the length of the front.  相似文献

Islands have long provided material and inspiration for the study of evolution and ecology. The West Indies are complex historically and geographically, providing a rich backdrop for the analysis of colonization, diversification and extinction of species. They are sufficiently isolated to sustain endemic forms and close enough to sources of colonists to develop a dynamic interaction with surrounding continental regions. The Greater Antilles comprise old fragments of continental crust, some very large; the Lesser Antilles are a more recent volcanic island arc, and the low-lying Bahama Islands are scattered on a shallow oceanic platform. Dating of island lineages using molecular methods indicates over-water dispersal of most inhabitants of the West Indies, although direct connections with what is now southern Mexico in the Early Tertiary, and subsequent land bridges or stepping stone islands linking to Central and South America might also have facilitated colonization. Species-area relationships within the West Indies suggest a strong role for endemic radiations and extinction in shaping patterns of diversity. Diversification is promoted by opportunities for allopatric divergence between islands, or within the large islands of the Greater Antilles, with a classic example provided by the Anolis lizards. The timing of colonization events using molecular clocks permits analysis of colonization-extinction dynamics by means of species accumulation curves. These indicate low rates of colonization and extinction for reptiles and amphibians in the Greater Antilles, with estimated average persistence times of lineages in the West Indies exceeding 30Myr. Even though individual island populations of birds might persist an average of 2Myr on larger islands in the Lesser Antilles, recolonization from within the archipelago appears to maintain avian lineages within the island chain indefinitely. Birds of the Lesser Antilles also provide evidence of a mass extinction event within the past million years, emphasizing the time-heterogeneity of historical processes. Geographical dynamics are matched by ecological changes in the distribution of species within islands over time resulting from adaptive radiation and shifts in habitat, often following repeatable patterns. Although extinction is relatively infrequent under natural conditions, changes in island environments as a result of human activities have exterminated many populations and others--especially old, endemic species--remain vulnerable. Conservation efforts are strengthened by recognition of aesthetic, cultural and scientific values of the unique flora and fauna of the West Indies.  相似文献

The frog Leptodactylus validus occurs in northern South America, Trinidad and Tobago, and the southern Lesser Antilles (Grenada and St. Vincent). Mitochondrial DNA sequences were used to perform a nested clade phylogeographic analysis (NCPA), to date colonization events, and to analyze colonization patterns using on a relaxed molecular clock and coalescent simulations. L. validus originated on the mainland and first colonized Trinidad with subsequent independent colonizations of Tobago and the Lesser Antilles from Trinidad. The NCPA suggests a historical vicariant event between populations in Trinidad and Tobago from those in the Lesser Antilles. The colonization of Trinidad occurred 1 million years ago (mya) and the colonization of the Lesser Antillean islands occurred 0.4 mya. The coalescent approach supported the scenario where L. validus dispersed from Trinidad to St. Vincent and from there to Grenada, a dispersal event that could have been mediated by human introduction as recent as 1600 years ago.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung 1. Es wurde die Bakterienverteilung auf zwei Schnitten (Feuerschiff Elbe I — Helgoland und Feuerschiff P 8 — Helgoland) am 12. und 13. Februar untersucht. Die See war zu dieser Zeit mit Eisfeldern bedeckt. Es besteht eine eindeutige Beziehung zwischen Temperatur und Salzgehalt zur Bakterienzahl, d. h. bakterienreicheres Küstenwasser vermischte sich mit keimärmerem Seewasser.2. Durch die Einschlüsse von Sedimenten in den Eisschollen findet eine beträchtliche Keimverfrachtung statt.3. In der Erwärmungsphase 1963 findet eine starke Bakterienzunahme statt, die vermutlich vorwiegend auf Süßwassereinflüsse zurückzuführen ist.4. Die vor Helgoland 1963 gefundenen sehr hohen Bakterienzahlen fallen mit zeitlich einige Wochen früher festgestellten sehr hohen Bakterienzahlen in der Elbe zusammen, während die Bakterienzahlen des entsprechenden Vorjahreszeitraumes in der Elbe und vor Helgoland bedeutend niedriger lagen.
Effects of the cold winter 1962/63 on the bacteria populations of Helgoland
In order to count the total number of bacteria, the pour-plate method and a modified 2216 E medium (Zobell 1946) were used; temperature and salinity were recorded. Two cruises were conducted: one in the direction of the estuary of the river Elbe, the other in the direction of the open North Sea (light-ship P 8, located 25 nautical miles westwardly from Helgoland). The highest bacterial numbers were found at the stations closest to the mainland, and a close correlation between temperature, salinity and bacterial numbers was discovered. In other words, coastal water high in bacterial numbers and rich in organic substances was mixed with water of the open sea with a low bacterial content. To some extent transportation of bacteria via ice floes is responsible for the high bacterial numbers in the colder water. During the warm-up periods in early spring of 1963, a sharp increase in bacterial numbers was found in the samples taken in the waters at the permanent station between Helgoland and the nearby Dune. These numbers correspond with a decrease in salinity. The bacterial curves are to some extent in agreement with those found in the river Elbe in the winter and spring of 1963 byRheinheimer (1964). From all these facts it becomes apparent that the bacterial numbers recorded near Helgoland are strongly influenced by the water of the river Elbe, and therefore the effects of the cold winter 1962/63 upon bacteria of the coast of Helgoland are to an important part indirect ones.

(1) The impact of thermal effluents from coastal power plant located on the east coast of India on phytoplankton was studied by field observations and laboratory experiments. (2) Monthly boat cruises (for 15 months) and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of temperature and chlorine on phytoplankton. (3) Phytoplankton and chlorophyll a decreased during the transit of water from intake point to outfall, while at mixing point the chlorophyll values recovered significantly. (4) Laboratory experiments revealed that decrease in chlorophyll and productivity was largely due to chlorination than due to elevated temperature. (5) Combined temperature and chlorine treatment experiments on phytoplankton showed little synergistic effects. (6) It is concluded that the effect of thermal discharge from the power plant on phytoplankton in the receiving water body is quite localized and phytoplankton distribution and abundance in the coastal waters per se are not affected.  相似文献
