Synopsis This paper describes a study performed in the Gulf of Aqaba on food selectivity and hunting behaviour of three species of sympatric fish from the genusCephalopholis. These fishes occur in the shallow-water coral habitats of the Red Sea and feed on fishes and invertebrates. Of these,C. argus andC. miniata prefer selected fish species (95 and 86% of their diet respectively), whereasC. hemistiktos consumes more invertebrates (36%) and is less selective with respect to fish species. All three species employ various techniques to catch their prey and in situations where their elected food is absent they readily switch to substitute prey species.  相似文献

Synopsis The relationships existing between the chaetodontid fishes and the surrounding coral communities were investigated in the Gulf of Aqaba. Quantitative data were analysed by a correspondence and a cluster analysis. The results demonstrated a similarity in the spatial distribution of both communities. Significant correlations were found between the density of chaetodontid fishes and the diversity of the coral community as well as the substratum coverage by the coral colonies. The density of exclusive coral browsers was also correlated to the abundance of branching colonies. Among the different genera of branching corals, correlations were significant only for the genusAcropora. These results suggested the existence of strong links between coral and chaetodontid fish assemblages.  相似文献

In many reef ecosystems, artificial reefs (AR) have become permanent additions to the area, sustaining well-developed benthic communities. Long-term studies on the development of AR coral communities are scarce, and comparisons with their natural surroundings are limited. The present study describes the stony and soft coral community structure of unplanned vertical AR in Eilat (Red Sea) that have progressed beyond the initial successional phases, and compares these to the adjacent natural reefs (NR). Coral communities were characterized using belt transects, conducted on 34- and 14-year-old unplanned AR, and on two proximate NR. Stony corals were the major component in the NR, while soft corals, mainly Nephtheidae, accounted for up to 90% of the total living coverage in the AR. This was attributed to physical and biological features associated with the ARs vertical orientation, which was absent in the NR, and to the life history traits of these soft corals. Community differences between the two AR were related to structural stability and age. The results suggest that AR may increase local heterogeneity and space availability by adding novel habitats, increasing production and elevating species diversity in the surroundings.Communicated by Biological Editor H.R.  Habitat association and depth distribution of two sympatric coral reef groupers of the genus Cephalopholis were examined at Rota, Mariana Islands. The two species are similar in body size, morphology, and social organization. In this study, they differed in their association with habitat and microhabitat and in depth distribution. Cephalopholis spiloparaea occurred on the reef slope between the reef terrace and deep sand flats at depths between 15 and 26 m. This species was associated mainly with Porites rus corals. Cephalopholis urodeta occurred largely on the upper reef terrace at 1–12 m. This species was associated mainly with coral pavement. The observed pattern of segregation might be the result of competitive or noncompetitive interactions or of phylogenetic constraints, but the exact mechanism or combination thereof remains unknown. Synopsis Seasonal and spatial aspects of spawning for three commercially important grouper species in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico are detailed. These species — all of which are protogynous hermaphrodites - spawn in deep water (> 25 m for red grouper,> 40 m for gag and scamp), making it difficult to observe spawning behaviors without ROV or submersible support. They respond to intense fishing pressure in ways that are directly related to their respective reproductive styles. Species that aggregate appear to be more susceptible to such pressures than those that do not, as evidenced by marked skewing of sex ratios in favor of females. Gag, Mycteroperca microlepis, have suffered a drop in the proportion of males from 17% to 1% in the last 20 years; scamp, Mycteroperca phenax, have dropped from 36% to 18%; and red grouper, Epinephelus morio, which do not aggregate, have shown little change in the sex ratio over the past 25–30 years.  相似文献

Synopsis Elimination of adult groupers (Cephalopholis spp.) from various reef formations in the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea) resulted in replenishment by other predatory fishes of different taxa and only partly (21.6%) by species of the same genus. Three years later, the initial population composition had not been restored. Recolonization by juvenile groupers presumably settling from the plankton was only 11.3%. Censuses of the typical piscine prey of groupers, before and 36 months after the removal of Cephalopholis, showed virtually no change in abundace and species composition.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed on the schooling and feeding behaviour of Trichogaster fasciatus . There was a tendency on the part of individuals of similar size to school together; the instinct being stronger in younger specimens. Unavailability of similar-sized individuals led to schooling by members of different size-groups. Column feeding was exhibited by the fish. While feeding at the bottom, the fishes formed angles varying from 30°90°. Larger individuals formed a right angle more often than younger members of the species. Optimum degree of crowding seemed necessary for active feeding as confinement of single individual, or overcrowded condition, both resulted in a decline of feeding activity.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the Talek clan of spotted hyaenas in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, was monitored continuously for 7 years. Talek hyaenas adapted to large temporal variations in prey abundance by being opportunistic predators. During the first half of the year, the hyaenas fed on resident ungulates, and their diet consisted mainly of topi and Thomson's gazelles. Upon arrival of the migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas switched to feeding on the wildebeest which provided them with a superabundance of food for about 3 months. After the migratory animals returned to the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas experienced a period of reduced prey abundance due to the temporary dispersion of resident ungulates. At this time hyaenas hunted the few remaining wildebeest, and also increased their use of the remaining resident animals. Although Talek hyaenas were generally opportunistic in their feeding behaviour, they did exhibit clear dietary preference for larger prey species, particularly wildebeest. Finally, carrion comprised only 5% of the biomass consumed by Talek hyaenas, the lowest proportion of carrion in the diet of any Crocuta population studied to date.  相似文献

Synopsis Bergmann-type ecogeographic patterns are common among small resident rocky-shore fishes in the Gulf of California where triplefin blennies (Tripterygiidae) represent a significant component of the community. Using estimates of adult body size from samples throughout the Gulf, four triplefin species, three more than previously reported, showed significant correlations of body size with latitude. The intensity and form of the relationships are given. Measuring the length of the largest individual in samples rather than using average body weight per individuals in samples offers a better estimate of adult body size.  相似文献

Most Phocids are thought to reduce their food intake during the breeding and moulting seasons, even though fish are not in short supply. The present study of a captive breeding colony of harbour seals explored the relationship between changes in amount eaten, social behaviour and general activity levels. Even though the animals were given free access to food, over the year the daily amount they ate varied in three cycles. Food eaten fell below average between pupping and mating in June‐July, and fell again in November until early December, for a third time in mid February, and again in early May. Levels surpassed average during and shortly after moulting, and again in late December. Observations made during the summer and early fall revealed that the adult males became more active, and engaged in more social interaction when they were eating less. The female showed no such activity change as a function of appetite. Play occurred primarily when food levels were high. These results are discussed in the context of systems interaction theories of motivation.  相似文献

Synopsis Aspects of the reproduction of three sympatric and endemic chaetodontids, Chaetodon austriacus, C. fasciatus and C. paucifasciatus, from the Jordan Gulf of Aqaba were investigated. Chaetodon fasciatus had a higher fecundity than the other species which, in turn, had similar fecundities. The major egg release of C. austriacus and C. paucifasciatus began in August, that of C. fasciatus in September. Based on the gonadosomatic index of both sexes, the spawning period of C. austriacus was from July through October, that of C. paucifasciatus from August through October and that of C. fasciatus from September through December. The maturity length of the three chaetodontids is given and reproductive isolation among the sympatric species is discussed.  相似文献

The Callitrichidae are a family of New World primates that exhibit a complex of behavioral and morphological characters reputedly similar to those of tree squirrels of the genus Sciurus.In particular, the locomotor behavior of tamarins and marmosets has been described as “squirrel-like. ” In this paper I describe a field investigation of the locomotor behavior and ecology of the Panamanian tamarin (Saguinus oedipus geoffroyi)and the redtailed squirrel (Sciurus granatensis).From January through August 1978, a total of 1200 hr was spent observing freeranging populations of tamarins and tree squirrels in an area of secondary forest on the Pacific Coast of Panama. Observations were made using an instantaneous time sampling technique. Individual activity records were collected on focal animals and recorded at 2.5-min intervals throughout the day. The following information was collected: (a) nature and structure of the substrate exploited, (b) activities on these supports and/or types of resources procured, and (c) body posture involved in the use of these supports. Data presented indicate major differences in substrate preference and positional behavior in tamarins and tree squirrels. Unlike squirrels, tamarins avoid vertical and sharply inclined supports during travel. Movements through the canopy is accomplished by a series of long leaps which begin and end on thin terminal supports. However, the Panamanian tamarin spent numerous hours clinging to large vertical trunks while feeding on plant exudate. Gums comprise 23.O% of the noninsect portion of the tamarin diet. The relationships between small body size, claw-like nails, substrate preference, and positional behavior are discussed. Claw-like nails enable this primate to exploit a food resource that would otherwise be inaccessible. The interrelationship between environment, behaviour, and morphology provides a frameworks from which to understand callitrichid adaptations. These adaptations are not convergent with those of the sciurid rodents. Combtooth blennies have recurved, fang-like caniniform teeth at the rear end of a single row of incisiform teeth. The lengths and positions of these canines were measured in the lower jaws of males of 14 species of Mediterranean Blenniidae. In four species, lower jaw canines were measured in males and females, while in one species, the upper jaw canines of both sexes were also measured. Relative (to body length) canine length in males tends to be significantly greater (10–40%) than in females. There are significant interspecific differences in relative canine length, with smaller species tending to have relatively larger teeth. No significant correlation was obtained between canine length and importance of animal prey in the diet, nor with 'hole fit' of males, which may be related with the intensity of paternal care. We suggest that canines in combtooth blennies are predominately used for predator deterrence and agonistic interactions.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla Linnaeus 1758) is a species typical for waters of Western Europe. Thanks to early expeditions on the Atlantic Ocean by the Danish biologist Johannes Schmidt who found small (<10mm) leptocephali larvae in the Sargasso Sea about 100 years ago, we have now a strong indication where the spawning site for this species is located. The American eel (Anguilla rostrata, LeSueur) also spawns in the Sargasso Sea. The spawning time and location of both species have been supported and refined in recent analyses of the available historical data. Subsequent ichthyoplankton surveys conducted by McCleave (USA) and Tesch (Germany) in the 1980s indicated an increase in the number of leptocephali <10 mm , confirming and refining the Sargasso Sea theory of Johannes Schmidt. Distinctions between the European and American eel are based on morphological characteristics (number of vertebrae) as well as molecular markers (allozymes, mitochondrial DNA and anonymous genomic-DNA. Although recognised as two distinct species, it remains unclear which mechanisms play a role in species separation during larval drift, and what orientation mechanism eels use during migration in the open sea. The current status of knowledge on these issues will be presented. The hypothesis that all European eel migrate to the Sargasso Sea for reproduction and comprise a single randomly mating population, the so called panmixia theory, was until recently broadly accepted. However, based on field observations, morphological parameters and molecular studies there are some indications that Schmidt’s claim of complete homogeneity of the European eel population and a unique spawning location may be an overstatement. Recent molecular work on European eel indicated a genetic mosaic consisting of several isolated groups, leading to a rejection of the panmixia theory. Nevertheless, the latest extensive genetic survey indicated that the geographical component of genetic structure lacked temporal stability, emphasising the need for temporal replication in the study of highly vagile marine species. Induced spawning of hormone treated eels in the aquarium was collective and simultaneous. In this work for the first time group spawning behaviour has ever been observed and recorded in eels. Studies in swim-tunnels indicate that eels can swim four to six times more efficiently than non-anguilliform fish such as trout. After a laboratory swim trial of eels over 5,500 km, the body composition did not change and fat, protein and carbohydrate were used in the same proportion. This study demonstrated for the first time that European eel are physiologically able of reaching the Sargasso Sea without feeding. Based on catches of newly hatched larvae, temperature preference tests and telemetry tracking of mature hormone treated animals, it can be hypothesised that spawning in the Sargasso Sea is collective and simultaneous, while presumably taking place in the upper 200 m of the ocean. Successful satellite tracking of longfin female eels in New Zealand has been performed to monitor migration pathways. Implementation of this new technology is possible in this species because it is three times larger than the European eel. In the future, miniaturisation of tagging technology may allow European eels to be tracked in time by satellite. The most interesting potential contribution of telemetry tracking of silver eels is additional knowledge about migration routes, rates, and depths. In combination with catches of larvae in the Sargasso Sea, it may elucidate the precise spawning locations of different eel species or groups. Only then, we will be able to define sustainable management issues by integrating this novel knowledge into spawners escapement and juvenile fishing quota.  相似文献

The labrisomid Dialommus fuscus , endemic to the Galapagos archipelago, is a predator of crustaceans, which moves up and down the intertidal zone with the tides. Its divided eye and elongated body permit it to forage in the wet sections of the intertidal habitat during low tide, both on the rocks and below the water line and in tide pools. Compared with other intertidal fishes (e.g. Bathygobius sp.), it was present on the rock flat in significantly smaller tide pools nearer to the water line during low tide.  相似文献

Feeding types of the infaunal macrobenthos of the intertidal soft-bottom communities from the estuaries of La Arena, Plentzia and Gernika, along the Basque coast (Gulf of Biscay) were studied in relation to habitat conditions, characteristics of each estuary and seasonal variation. General feeding structure observed in La Arena estuary was different from the other estuaries: omnivores were dominant, both in number of species and individuals, while surface deposit-feeders were the main feeding group in Plentzia and Gernika both in the finest sediment communities and in the sandy ones. Subsurface deposit-feeders were abundant in Plentzia and Gernika but scarce in La Arena estuary. Feeding types were related to the environmental variables. Sandy sediment communities presented a more balanced proportion among different feeding types and showed higher values of feeding diversity; suspension-feeders and predators were abundant only in that communities. By estuaries, feeding diversity was higher in Gernika and lower in La Arena. Seasonal variation in feeding diversity was observed, explained by changes in density of certain feeding groups; a common pattern of variation was found in Gernika communities, with an increase in June and a decrease in September. Oscillation of this index in Plentzia and La Arena depended on the estuary and the different communities; nevertheless a decrease of feeding diversity in September was commonly observed. Finally, feeding structure observed in our estuaries was compared to those described in coastal areas with organic enriched sediments, in order to assess the degree of perturbation of the environment based on the relative dominance of a certain feeding type in the macrobenthos.  相似文献
