Donald A. D., Morley F. H. W., Waller P. J., Axelsen A., Dobson R. J. and Donnelly J. R. 1982. Effects of reproduction, genotype and anthelmintic treatment of ewes on Ostertagia spp. populations. International Journal for Parasitology12: 403–411. Merino and Border Leicester × Merino (BL × M) ewes, nearly all of the same age and reared at the same site, were either unmated or mated to Border Leicester rams. Ewes of each genotype and reproductive status were untreated or were given a single pre-lambing drench with thiabendazole at 50 or 100 mg/kg a week before the start of lambing in spring on pastures at Canberra which had been contaminated during autumn and winter by adult sheep. The two genotypes grazed together within each combination of reproductive status and anthelmintic treatment which grazed separately. Thiabendazole was highly effective in removing both fourth stage larvae and adults of Ostertagia spp., the most abundant genus. Eight weeks after the pre-lambing drench lactating ewes carried larger Ostertagia spp. populations than did unmated ewes of both genotypes, but as a result of reinfection after treatment, differences between drenched and undrenched ewes were not significant. At this time lactating as well as unmated ewes harboured large populations of arrested early fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia spp. acquired during the last 8 weeks, showing that arrest of development is not prevented by lactation. There was strong evidence that some ingested larvae which became arrested in lactating ewes were rejected by unmated ewes. At all stages of the reproductive cycle studied, BL × M ewes were substantially more resistant to Ostertagia spp. infection than Merinos. No persistent benefits in parasite control or in animal production were detected from the pre-lambing drench.  相似文献

A three-year survey (1997–99) was carried out on organically reared sheep flocks throughout Sweden. The aim was to determine the prevalence and intensity of nematode infections and to establish relationships between sheep management practices and parasite infections. Faecal samples from ewes and lambs were collected from 152 organic flocks around lambing-time and during the grazing-period for analysis. Results were compared with the different management practices that farmers use to prevent parasitism in their flocks. A high proportion of the flocks was infected with nematodes. The most prevalent species were Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumeincta, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis and Chabertia ovina and infections progressively increased during summer in lambs grazing on permanent pastures. Severity of parasitic infection in lambs was highly dependent on egg output from the ewes. H. contortus was found in 37% of the flocks, even at latitudes approximating the Polar Circle. Nematodirus battus was recorded for the first time in Sweden during the course of this study. Lambs turned out onto permanent pasture showed higher nematode faecal egg counts (epg) than lambs that had grazed on pastures, which had not carried sheep the previous year. This beneficial effect of lambs grazing non-infected pastures persisted if the ewes were treated with an anthelmintic before turn-out and if the lambs were kept on pastures of low infectivity after weaning. In lambs, the prevalence and the magnitude of their egg counts were higher during autumn in flocks where lambs were slaughtered after 8 months of age, compared with flocks where all lambs were slaughtered before this age. These results will be used in providing advice to farmers of ways to modify their flock management in order to minimise the use of anthelmintics, but at the same time efficiently produce prime lambs.  相似文献

The periparturient rise in fecal egg counts in three strains of Florida Native ewes and its value in predicting resistance of lambs to Haemonchus contortus. International Journal for Parasitology16: 185–189. Significant (P < 0.05) differences in the magnitude of the periparturient rise in fecal egg counts (PPR) occurred in ewes of three strains of Florida Native sheep. Non-lambing ewes (n = 12) and lactating University strain ewes (n = 31), a strain selected over a 26-year period for parasite resistance by survival at pasture without anthelmintic treatment, had lower fecal egg counts than ewes of either Maxcy strain (n= 17), a commercial strain treated regularly with anthelmintics, or Backlinie strain (n = 16), a strain of Florida Native sheep that had some crossbreeding to Hampshire and Suffolk in their genotype and were regularly treated with anthelmintics. Whereas both Maxcy and Backlinie ewes showed a pronounced PPR, none occurred in non-lambing ewes (n=12) and the slight rise in fecal egg counts observed in University ewes was not significantly different from that of the non-lambing ewes. Backlinie ewes having twin lambs (n = 5) had a higher PPR than Backlinie ewes with single lambs (n = 11) or Maxcy ewes with single lambs (n = 15), but all three groups had higher PPRs than University ewes with single lambs (n = 27). No differences occurred in fecal egg counts of non-lambing ewes regardless of strain. Six weeks after weaning fecal egg counts of all ewes were uniformly low regardless of strain or prior lactation status.Ram lambs born to these ewes showed no significant strain differences in Haemonchus contortus burdens after experimental infection, deworming with levamisole and reinfection, although University lambs (n= 13) had lowest mean worm burdens at necropsy (2437) followed by Maxcy lambs (n= 12, mean =3106) and Backlinie lambs (n= 13, mean =3670). There was no significant correlation between worm burdens in these lambs and the magnitude of the PPR in their dams. Eight to 16 weeks after turn out to a common parasite-infested pasture ewe lambs (n = 13) born to University ewes had lower fecal egg counts than similar ewe lambs (n=8) born to Backlinie ewes. Prior to this time differences were not significant and egg counts were generally low. The magnitude of the PPR in their dams was not significantly correlated with fecal egg counts or PCVs of individual ewe lambs.  相似文献

Waller P. J. and Thomas R. J. 1978. Host-induced effects on the morphology of Ostertagia circumcincta in grazing sheep. International Journal for Parasitology8: 365–370. Morphological changes are described in adult Ostertagia circumcincta recovered from lambs slaughtered monthly from June to November. Comparisons were made between continuously grazed principal lambs exposed to infection for increasingly long periods, and tracer Iambs exposed for only four weeks. Lambs were either slaughtered immediately off pasture or held 2 weeks under worm free conditions before slaughter. Although no resistance to establishment of infection occurred, shown by comparable worm burdens of principals and tracers, a rapid parasite population turnover was observed in the principal lambs which ceased once the lambs were removed from the infected pasture. Significantly fewer adult female Ostertagia with fully developed vulval flaps were recorded in principals compared to tracers. Such differences are considered to be primarily host induced responses which rapidly come into play, evidenced by the entire populations of developing female worms in tracers slaughtered immediately off pasture showing arrested vulval flap development after they had completed development in those tracers held for a further two weeks. A progressive reduction in the proportion of adult male worms also occurred in the principal lambs. Population density was shown to have an inverse correlation with worm size. By analogy, it is suggested that seasonal change in the presence of cuticular inflations in Haemonchus contortus females with linguiform vulval flaps may be primarily host induced, rather than a change in the relative fitness of discrete genotypes.  相似文献

A vaccine containing integral membrane glycoproteins from the intestine of Haemonchus contortus was evaluated in three groups of grazing sheep each containing 13 ewes and their 16 lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. Two groups were vaccinated with either 5 or 50 μg of the antigen per immunisation, while the third, the control group, received adjuvant alone. The sheep were immunised six times at 3 week intervals, partly because the vaccine antigens are hidden and thus no immunological boost would be delivered by subsequent infection and partly because the level of Haemonchus spp. challenge was expected to be high. The vaccinated ewes, first immunised approximately 1 month before lambing, showed a circulating antibody response but no signs of reduced anaemia or Haemonchus spp. egg counts, compared with control ewes. Several ewes with severe haemonchosis in all three groups had to be given precautionary treatment with anthelmintic drugs. In contrast, vaccinating their lambs with either 5 or 50 μg of the antigen per immunisation resulted in 10 fold higher antibody titres. In the case of the lower antigen dose this was associated with significantly less anaemia, 72% reduction in the overall number of Haemonchus spp. eggs produced and significantly fewer worms compared with control lambs. It is hypothesised that the heavily pregnant or lactating ewes did not have sufficient physiological reserves to mount a protective response following vaccination in the tropical weather and high challenge conditions that prevailed. Nevertheless, the vaccine could afford useful protection for lambs against H. contortus.  相似文献

A significant number of lambs born each year in Australia die within 72 h of birth. Periods of high wind, combined with rain and low temperatures can lead to marked increases in the mortality level. Under these climatic conditions mortality levels may be reduced with the provision of shelter. This study used contact loggers to compare interactions between ewes with twin lambs across two shelter types (Hessian and shrubs), while also comparing ewes with single and twin lambs in a single shelter type (Hessian). The contact loggers record the time of the initial contact (within approximately 4 to 5 m) between collared animals and the duration of each contact. Contact levels between ewes immediately after lambing were only 10% of the initial levels (1 h/day). For single-born lambs, lambs averaged 11 h contact per day with their mother, while for twinborn lambs, each lamb averaged 9.25 h/day with its mother and 14.7 h/day with its sibling. The level of contact between ewes and each of their offspring in the Hessian was 24% lower (P < 0.05) for ewes with twin lambs than with singles. For ewes with twin lambs the level of contact was 17% lower (P < 0.05) in the Hessian shelter compared with shrub shelter. We conclude that shelter type and birth number can affect the level of contact between ewes and their offspring.  相似文献

The research has shown the interesting contributions of shearing in mid-gestation on the performance of lambs from birth to weaning. Other studies have reported that shearing at early pregnancy influences the development of the placenta and lamb live weight at birth. However, there was a lack of information on the effect of early-prepartum shearing on the behavior of the offspring from weaning onward. This study evaluated the effect of shearing ewes at 50 days of gestation on the growth, reproductive behavior and response to a gastrointestinal parasite challenge in the female offspring from weaning to 18 months old. Fifty-seven Polwarth female lambs were used, 22 being singles and 35 twins born to ewes either shorn at 50 days of pregnancy (PS, n = 23) or shorn at 62 days postpartum (U, control, n = 34) resulting in four subgroups: single lambs born to PS ewes (n = 8), born to U ewes (n = 14), twin lambs born to PS ewes (n = 15) or born to U ewes (n = 20). All progeny were managed together under improved pasture with a minimum forage allowance of 6% live weight on dry basis. Body weight, body condition score and fecal eggs count were recorded every 14 days from weaning to 18 months of age. Concentrations of progesterone were measured weekly (from 4 to 10 months of age and from 14 to 18 months of age) to establish the onset of puberty. Ovulation rate at an induced and a natural heat (545 ± 1.0 and 562 ± 1.0 day old) was recorded. Prepartum shearing did not affect the age at puberty or the ovulation rate of female offspring, but those born as singles were more precocious ( P = 0.03) and heavier ( P = 0.02) at puberty than twin born lambs. Both the average value of parasite egg count ( P = 0.0 7) and the Famacha index ( P = 0.02) for the entire study period were lower in lambs born to prepartum shorn ewes than those born to postpartum shorn ewes. In conclusion, shearing at 50 days of gestation did not affect the growth or the reproductive behavior of female offspring. However, female lambs born from ewe shorn during gestation showed a better response to the parasitic challenge, and further research is required to confirm this.  相似文献

Resistance to an acute gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection is dependent on the ability of the host to recognise the parasite and mount a protective Th2 response. It is hypothesised that lambs which are genetically susceptible to GIN will differentially up-regulate Th1-type genes and therefore remain susceptible to chronic parasitism compared with genetically resistant lambs which will differentially up-regulate Th2-type genes and clear the parasite infection. Two selection flocks, in which lines of Merino sheep produced lambs genetically resistant or susceptible to GIN, were acutely challenged once or thrice with either Haemonchus contortus or Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Faecal-egg counts (FECs), and plasma and tissue anti-parasite (H. contortus or T. colubriformis) antibody isotype responses showed that resistant animals challenged three times with T. colubriformis established a protective Th2 response (negligible FEC, IgG1 and IgE) whereas susceptible animals required multiple challenges to establish a significant IgG1 response despite FECs remaining high. Trichostrongylus colubriformis elicited a more pronounced host response than H. contortus. RNA extracted from tissues at the site of each parasite infection and associated lymph nodes were interrogated by microarray and quantitative PCR analyses to correlate host gene expression to FECs and antibody responses. The IFN-γ inducible gene cxcl10 was up-regulated in the susceptible line of the Trichostrongylus selection flock sheep after a tertiary challenge with the parasites H. contortus and T. colubriformis. However, a uniform pattern of genes was not up-regulated in resistant animals from both selection flocks during both parasite infections, suggesting that the mode of host resistance to these parasites is different, although some similarities in host susceptibility were apparent.  相似文献

The ability of lactating Romney ewes to resist establishment of ingested infective-stage larvae (L3) of Ostertagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis was measured in the field. Three groups of seven single-lamb-bearing ewes were selected on the basis of uniformity of lambing date from a large flock held on pasture. Either 2, 4 or 6 weeks after parturition, groups of ewes were dosed with 24000 L3 of known oxfendazole-resistant parasite strains; 12000 of each species. Ten to 14 days later the ewes, along with their lambs, were transferred from the field to indoor pens. Twenty-five days after the challenge dose the ewes were drenched with oxfendazole to remove any field-derived infection and 3 days later slaughtered for worm counts. Mean establishment of the resistant parasites was low at all times, with the highest rate recorded being 6.1% for O. circumcincta 2 weeks after parturition. Establishment of O. circumcincta 4 and 6 weeks after parturition, and of T. colubriformis at all times, never exceeded 2%. By comparison, mean establishment in lambs held indoors and parasite free for 13 weeks prior to infection, was 24.9% and 47.1% for O. circumcincta and T. colubriformis, respectively. These results indicate that the lactating ewes were exhibiting a substantial ability to prevent establishment of ingested larvae. The results of this and other similar studies suggest that the dynamics of parasitism in lactating Coopworth and Romney ewes in New Zealand is substantially different to that in Merino ewes in Australia, and that these differences influence optimal strategies for the management of anthelmintic resistance in the two countries.  相似文献

Maternal behavior was examined in 301 multiparous ewes (2–6 years of age) that were of predominantly Suffolk or Targhee breeding. The ewes gave birth in either a normal lambing pen (control) or in a similar pen modified by the addition of 8 cubicles (cubicles). Approximately 100 ewes were present in each pen at a time, creating a density of 1 ewe m?2.Within the cubicle treatment, comparisons were made between the ewes which gave birth inside a cubicle (CUB-I, n = 64) and those that gave birth outside the cubicles (CUB-O, n = 92). CUB-I ewes spent less time moving about (P<0.01), travelled less distance (P<0.001), investigated fewer potential birth-sites (P<0.001) and spent more time in the cubicles (P<0.001) during the 60 min prior to giving birth than did CUB-O ewes. After giving birth, CUB-I ewes remained close to their lambs, which always remained in the cubicles. This resulted in CUB-I ewes and their lambs remaining closer to each other and to the birth-site than CUB-O ewes and lambs (P<0.001). CUB-I ewes were rarely interfered with by other ewes (17 vs. 82% interference for CUB-I and CUB-O ewes, respectively) and had fewer (0) lambs separated or stolen from them than did CUB-O ewes (13 of 144 lambs). In comparing the cubicle system and the control pen, it was found that interference with ewes and lambs was less in the cubicle treatment (P<0.01). In the cubicle system, there tended to be fewer lambs separated from their dams (5.4 vs. 9.6%) and less stealing of lambs (3.1 vs. 5.2%) compared to the control pen. It is concluded that the use of cubicles under these conditions reduces the incidence of poor maternal behavior in ewes.  相似文献

We tested the ability of Merino and Merino × Romanov ewes and lambs to recognise each other at a distance when given the choice between an alien partner and their own. Two groups of animals were studied. In the first group, multiparous ewes and their lambs were housed permanently indoors at a stocking-rate of 1 ewe/2 m2. In the second group, ewes and lambs were run permanently outside in a paddock at a stocking rate of 1 ewe/500 m2. Of animals living outside, 87% of ewes recognised their own lamb (100% of multiparous dams versus 84% of primiparous ones, P = 0.02). This differed significantly from a random choice. By contrast, the proportion of correct choices by ewes living inside (all multiparous) was significantly lower (64%) and did not differ from a random choice at the 5% level. Lambs reared outside recognised their dam in 95% of cases, versus 72% in lambs reared indoors (P = 0.01). Both frequencies differed significantly from a choice at random. It is concluded that the environmental conditions in which ewes and lambs are maintained can influence their ability to select their partners at a distance with the help of auditory and visual cues.  相似文献

In order to better understand how patterns of parasitism in howler monkeys are affected by forest fragmentation, we carried out a 1 year survey of gastrointestinal parasites in fecal samples from three groups of Mexican howler monkeys inhabiting different forest fragments in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve, Mexico. The study groups were chosen because the conditions in which they lived suggested a potentially negative gradient for parasite richness and a positive gradient for levels of parasitism. We report for the first time the presence of Entamoeba coli in Alouatta palliata mexicana and of hookworms (Family Ancylostomidae) in A. palliata. A reduction in home range size and an increase in disturbance was associated with a loss of parasite richness, which in general was high. Parasite prevalence and the proportion of contaminated samples in which each parasite taxon was present was also high in general and there were no differences between groups. A factor related to the generally high levels of parasitism in our study groups could be the high humidity in the study area, because this favors the survival of parasitic free forms and increases the chances of infection. This would also account for the tendency towards higher levels of parasitism observed in the rainy season. Finally we did not find a pattern relating sex and parasitism.  相似文献

The reproductive characteristics of Chinese Hu sheep are reviewed. Male and female lambs reached puberty at a mean age of 120 days and 180 days, respectively, with an average body weight of 18.54 ± 1.48 kg (n = 31) and 22.75 ± 1.98 kg (n = 24). Adult male and female sheep reproduced throughout the year. On average, ewes lambed 1.65 times per year (n = 1482). The mean ovulation rate of adult ewes was over 2.2 (n = 46). The average litter size of 150863 ewes raised under extensive conditions was 2.06. The early sexual maturity of male and female lambs was respectively related to high concentrations of testosterone and 17β-E2 in blood plasma in the earlier postnatal period. The mechanism of high fecundity is not known.  相似文献

Along with immune defences, many animals exhibit effective anti-parasite behaviours such as parasite avoidance and removal that influence their susceptibility to infection. Host ecology and life history influence investment into comparatively fixed defences such as innate immunity but may affect the strength of anti-parasite behaviours as well. We investigated activity levels in five different species of larval amphibian with varying life histories and ecology in control, novel food stimulus, and trematode parasite (Echinoparyphium sp.) threat conditions. There was a significant interaction of species and treatment given that American toad (Bufo americanus), wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus), and bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles generally increased their activity when parasite infectious stages were present while grey tree frogs (Hyla versicolor) and northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) did not, even though activity was negatively related to infection. In addition, there was considerable variation among species in their susceptibility to parasitism, with infection prevalence ranging from 17 % in bullfrog tadpoles to 70 % in wood frogs. However, amphibian life history (larval and adult traits) was not related to parasitism or level of anti-parasite behaviour at the species level. Consequently, we suggest that future investigations include more species with a range of life history traits and also consider host ecology, particularly if conspicuous anti-parasite behaviours are more likely in amphibian species that experience a relatively low risk of predation.  相似文献

Paton G., Thomas R. J. and Waller P. J. 1984. A prediction model for parasitic gastroenteritis in lambs. International Journal for Parasitology14: 439–445. The parasite Ostertagia circumcincta is a major cause of parasitic gastro-enteritis in lambs in temperate countries. A prediction model is described, based on a mathematical representation of the external and internal stages of the life-cycle.The model is used to predict the numbers of infective larvae on a permanent experimental paddock grazed by ewes and lambs in 1973 and 1974. The “moisture status” of the surface layer of the pasture was found to be of fundamental importance for the successful prediction of the development and survival of the pre-infective larval stages. For the years studied the contribution to the summer wave of infection by lamb derived larvae was particularly significant.  相似文献

The authors present a survey of gastrointestinal helminths of sheep on permanent pastures in the extreme north region of Tunisia (Mediterranean climate). Dynamic infestation of animals has been monitored by using batches of three tracer lambs introduced each two months during 2004 and 2005. These lambs were kept in the pens of veterinary school of Sidi Thabet (Tunisia) during three months and then necropsied. Faecal and blood samples were took from tracer lambs each two months during the whole period, and from animal flock only during 2004. The main helminth genera encountered were Trichostrongylus spp., Teladorsagia spp., Strongyloides papillosus and Anoplocephalidea; occasionaly were found Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Chabertia, Cooperia, Trichuris and Paramphistomum. The egg count of the ewes and lambs in the flock showed two peaks. For both ewes and lambs there is a gradual increase from January with a peak in May-June. This first peak is considered to be due to acquisition of infective larvae during the rainy and cold season, as evident from the worm burdens of tracer lambs. The second peak was exclusively observed in ewes during late autumn-early winter (November-December); it has two origins: infestation by third larvae stage and the periparturient rise. The worm burdens of tracer lambs showed that there was a gradual accumulation of nematodes from September- October, reaching a peak in March-April; a very low or naught infection is reported during the dry period (July-August). Infection by Anoplocephalidea was higher during the dry season. This study is primordial for a comprehensive control programme implementation against gastrointestinal helminths.  相似文献

Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

Rapid rebreeding of winter- and spring-lambing ewes is essential if ewes are to lamb more than once per year, but fertility of lactating ewes is often low and early weaning of lambs may be undesirable in forage-based production systems. Selection to improve fertility in spring matings has been successful and led to development of ewes with a reduced seasonal anestrus. Potential for rapid rebreeding of lactating out-of-season breeding (OOS) ewes was tested in three studies. In Experiment 1, effects of short-term lamb removal on rebreeding was evaluated over 2 years using 71 January-lambing OOS ewes. At an average of 63 days postpartum, 36 ewes had lambs removed for 72 h, and all ewes were joined with rams. Circulating progesterone levels indicated that 74% of ewes ovulated before lamb separation; 91% of ewes mated within 5 weeks of ram exposure, 85% were diagnosed as pregnant and 75% lambed. The average interval between lambings was 225 days. In contrast to results observed in cattle, none of the measured variables was affected by lamb separation (P>0.20). Experiment 2 compared rebreeding performance of 24 OOS and 23 St. Croix ewes that lambed in January and averaged 60 days postpartum at ram introduction. More OOS ewes ovulated, mated and became pregnant during the first 21 days of ram exposure (83.3%, 58.3%, and 41.7%, respectively; P<0.001) compared with St. Croix ewes (26.1%, 0%, and 0%, respectively). After 39 days of ram exposure, pregnancy rates still favored OOS ewes (66.7% v. 39.1%; P=0.06), but the percentage of ewes that lambed did not differ (P>0.20) between OOS (47.8%) and St. Croix ewes (34.8%). In the third study, 34 March-lambing OOS ewes were exposed to rams on May 3 at an average of 40 days postpartum to characterize their reproductive performance. After 39 days of ram exposure, 52.9±8.7% of the ewes had mated, and 38.2±8.5% were diagnosed as pregnant. However, only 20.6±7.0% of the ewes produced viable lambs, suggesting a high level of uterine insufficiency. Spring fertility of lactating OOS ewes in these studies was one of the highest reported in the literature and indicated that selection for fertility in spring mating would improve reproductive performance in accelerated lambing programs. However, exposure of lactating OOS ewes to rams at 30 to 50 days postpartum was associated with high prenatal lamb mortality.  相似文献

This work explored the prevalence of certain diseases and syndromes affecting adult and young Barki sheep, with an assessment of the consequent economic losses. A surveillance study was conducted by collecting accurate records of 4500 adult Barki sheep and 5580 lambs belonging to 22 farms. The results showed that the overall prevalence of pneumonia, Oestrus ovis infestation, and abscesses in adult sheep was 27%, 24%, and 16%, respectively, and the times of year with the greatest prevalence of each disease were winter, summer, and spring, respectively. With regard to lambs, the overall prevalence of pneumonia and diarrhoea was 18% and 13%, respectively, and both conditions were particularly prevalent during autumn. Pneumonia, O. ovis infestation, and abscesses cost 35 Egyptian pounds (EGP), 40 EGP, and 21 EGP for rams and 19.5 EGP, 19.5 EGP, and 15.6 EGP for ewes, respectively. These disparities in cost were attributable to the differences in weight between the genders. This was also true for lambs; it is interesting to note that pneumonia and diarrhoea cost 25.4 EGP and 13.05 for male lambs and 12 EGP and 2.07 EGP for female lambs.  相似文献

Limited research has suggested that higher lambing densities increase interference from foreign ewes at lambing which disrupts the ewe-lamb bond and compromises lamb survival. This may be particularly evident in mobs of twin-bearing ewes compared to single-bearing ewes because a greater number of lambs are born per day. Therefore, we hypothesised that; (i) decreasing the mob size of ewes at lambing has a greater impact on the survival of twin-born lambs than single-born lambs; (ii) the relationship between mob size and lamb survival can be explained by differences in the rate of interaction with foreign ewes and lambs at lambing; and (iii) ewes will utilise a limited area of the paddock at lambing and thus lambing density will be defined by the distribution of ewes in the paddock rather than the paddock area. Merino ewes were allocated into a 2×2 factorial combination of ewe pregnancy status (single- or twin-bearing) and mob size (high (n=130 ewes) or low (n=50 ewes)) on day 140 from the start of joining. Each treatment had two replicates excepting the low mob size for twins which had a third replicate. Ewes lambed at a stocking rate of 11 ewes/ha. Feed-on-offer during lambing exceeded 2400 kg dry matter (DM)/ha. Ewe-lamb behaviour was observed and dead lambs were autopsied over 11 days during the peak of lambing. The distribution of ewes in each paddock was recorded every 2 h during daylight hours by counting the number of ewes occupying 2500 m2 grids. The proportion of ewes and their newborn progeny which interacted with foreign ewes at lambing did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (24.9% v. 20.8%) or twin-bearing ewes (14.3% v. 19.6%; P=0.74). Similarly, interaction with foreign lambs did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (14.5% v. 25.2%) and twin-bearing ewes (34.5% v. 26.4%; P=0.44). The distribution of ewes within the paddock did not differ between treatments (P=0.95). On average, single-bearing ewes which lambed at the high and low mob sizes occupied 34% and 36% of the paddock during daylight hours, and the corresponding values for twin-bearing ewes were 40% and 43%. Survival of twin-born lambs was lower than single-born lambs (75.3% v. 87.9%; P<0.01), however, lamb survival was not influenced by mob size regardless of birth type. These results suggest that higher mob sizes may not compromise lamb survival when feed-on-offer during lambing exceeds 2400 kg DM/ha.  相似文献
