Kearn G. C. 1984. The migration of the monogenean Entobdella soleae on the surface of its host, Solea solea. International Journal for Parasitology14: 63–69. It has been confirmed experimentally that after invasion of the upper surface of the common sole (Solea solea) by oncomiracidia of the monogenean skin parasite Entobdella soleae, the post-larvae migrate to the lower surface. During the first 9 days after invasion of the upper surface, post-larvae migrate directly or obliquely forwards with respect to the fish before gaining access to the lower surface. The possible significance of migratory movements in E. soleae is discussed. 相似文献

Llewellyn J. and Simmons J. E. 1984. The attachment of the monogenean parasite Callorhynchicola multitesticulatus to the gills of its holocephalan host Callorhynchus milii. International Journal for Parasitology14: 191–196. C. multitesticulatus when juvenile (up to about 10 mm long) attaches itself by four pairs of clamps to the secondary gill lamellae of its host the elephant fish Callorhynchus milii. However, in adult parasites the haptor invades the host tissue and the stalk connecting the haptor with the body-proper becomes surrounded by a sleeve of fibrous host inflammatory reaction tissue. The stalk is provided with annuli with anteriorly-directed flanges which are pressed into the walls of the sleeve of host tissue when the diameter of the stalk increases as a result of the contraction of well-developed sub-tegumentary longitudinal muscles. 相似文献

Three distinct groups of unicellular glands open into the buccal cavity, prepharynx, and oesophagus, respectively, of Diclidophora merlangi. Buccal glands produce a dense, acidophilic secretion of protein-rich droplets that are discharged from duct-like extensions of the glands by eccrine secretion. Prepharyngeal glands are extensive and contain basiphilic secretory droplets of varying density and characterized by the presence of one or two dense core-like inclusions. The droplets are PAS-positive and reactive for protein, and accumulate in the gland cell apices which form part of the lining to the prepharynx lumen. They are released in large numbers by apocrine secretion or, individually, by an eccrine secretory mechanism. Oesophageal glands are acidophilic and contain electronlucid, PAS-positive droplets that develop a crystalline appearance prior to release via either eccrine or apocrine secretion. Differences in ultrastructure and histochemistry indicate the glands are also functionally separate, and their probable role in feeding and extracellular digestion of blood in the worm is discussed. 相似文献

Monocotylid monogeneans inhabit a wide diversity of sites on their chondrichthyan hosts including the skin, gills, nasal fossae,
urogenital system and coelom. The large variation in the morphology of the haptor appears to reflect this diversity in attachment
sites. We demonstrate that the complexity of the haptor can be related to the habitat of the parasite. Generally, those parasites
which live in habitats subject to strong water currents such as the gills and dorsal skin surface have more complex haptors
than those in environments exposed to weaker or no water currents including the nasal fossae, urogenital system and body cavity.
However, there can be considerable variation in haptoral components, even among congeners, living on the ‘gills’ of their
hosts. The microhabitat was determined for Monocotyle helicophallus and M. spiremae, both from the gills of the pink whipray,
Himantura fai, and M. corali from the gills of the cowtail ray, Pastinachus sephen. We demonstrate that differences in the
morphology of the hamuli and the number and morphology of septal sclerites and marginal papillae among these species of Monocotyle
can be related directly to their microhabitat. It also appears that different haptoral structures are important for attachment
to the host at different stages in the development of the parasite, based on studies on the development and distribution of
Neoheterocotyle rhinobatidis from the gills of the common shovelnose ray Rhinobatos typus.

The external morphometry of spirlin Alburnoides bipunctatus , a threatened species in parts of its native range, was re‐examined in specimens from the River Rudava, Slovakia, using geometrical shape analysis, and the relationships between morphometry and habitat use were evaluated. Spirlin <40 mm standard length ( L S )(early and 'middle' juveniles) were found to differ significantly from those >51 mm (adults), whereas individuals between 41 and 50 mm L S (late juveniles) represented an intermediate interval during which major changes in shape appeared to occur. Adults had proportionally smaller eyes, deeper body, and longer preanal part of the body than the early and 'middle' juveniles. These differences tended to coincide with the differences observed in microhabitat use of spirlin, namely a generally increasing preference for high velocity areas with increasing age of the fish. Thus, changes in external morphometry occurring during the ontogeny of spirlin might reflect an increasing affinity for more complex, lotic microhabitats as well as developments associated with sexual maturation. 相似文献

Radio-tracking of spotted-tailed quolls Dasyurus maculatus (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) in the forested ranges of north-eastern New South Wales revealed that home ranges were extensive, with males occupying large, overlapping ranges [minimum convex polygon (MCP) up to 757 ha] and females occupying smaller, non-overlapping territories (MCP up to 175 ha). Quolls were partly arboreal, although most activity occurred on the ground or on fallen logs. Hollow logs were most frequently used as dens, but rock crevices, burrows, tree hollows and artificial structures were also used. Individual quolls were located in up to nine different dens and, with the exception of maternal dens, rarely sheltered in the same location on successive days. The large home ranges of the spotted-tailed quoll and the non-overlapping nature of female ranges necessitate very large areas of habitat to support viable populations. Fallen timber, used extensively for shelter and in travelling, may serve to enhance the quality of habitat for the species, and should be retained by forest and wildlife managers. 相似文献

Growth and development of the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi was examined in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes axenically reared on defined synthetic dietary media containing crude animal lecithin and synthetic dipalmitoyl lecithin. The first was a crude preparation containing impurities (mostly lipids) up to 40%, while the second was a highly purified preparation of lecithin (99.95%). Substantial proportions of apparently alive but undeveloped prefirst-stage parasite juveniles (presausage forms) were found in mosquitoes reared on all synthetic dietary media but not in mosquitoes reared on liver powder (control). Of the two lecithin preparations tested, parasites grew best in mosquitoes reared on a diet augmented with crude animal lecithin. Development was synchronized and the filarial parasites were able to complete two molts to become third-stage juveniles. Synthetic dl-dipalmitoyl lecithin in mosquito diets did not improve filarial development. The improvement of worm growth in terms of rate of morphogenesis and facility in molting, with the addition of crude, and not the pure lecithin preparation, suggested that the effect observed on filariae may not be directly due to the lecithin molecule, but due to a compound (probably a lipid), associated with the lecithin molecule in the crude preparation. 相似文献

Phlebotomus papatasi females were fed through membranes or from cotton wool soaked in blood, water, sucrose or sodium chloride solutions. In membrane-fed flies, all diets were routed to the midgut and not to the crop. Following the meals that went to the midgut, females showed ovarian development at least 3 times greater than in sucrose-fed, autogenous control flies. Neither small quantities of water arriving in the midgut following drinking from soaked cotton wool, nor piercing of a membrane without feeding, stimulated ovarian development. Flies exhibited different feeding behaviour namely, blood feeding, sugar feeding, and water drinking. The blood-feeding behaviour was typical of flies ingesting any of the experimental diets through membranes, or blood or saline from cotton wool. The other two types of behaviour were observed in flies which fed from soaked cotton wool. The type of behaviour was characterized by the depth of penetration of the mouthparts into the substrate, the deployment of the palps and the degree of contact between the palps and the surface. It is suggested that the stimuli which control the routing of meals to the crop or to the midgut are derived from these types of behaviour. 相似文献

Microcotyle sebastis is a gill monogenean ectoparasite that causes serious problems in the mariculture of the Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In this study, we isolated the parasite from fish farms along the coasts of Tongyeong, South Korea in 2016, and characterized its infection, morphology and molecular phylogeny. The prevalence of M. sebastis infection during the study period ranged from 46.7% to 96.7%, and the mean intensity was 2.3 to 31.4 ind./fish, indicating that the fish was constantly exposed to parasitic infections throughout the year. Morphological observations under light and scanning electron microscopes of the M. sebastis isolates in this study showed the typical characteristics of the anterior prohaptor and posterior opisthaptor of monogenean parasites. In phylogenetic trees reconstructed using the nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (cox1), they consistently clustered together with their congeneric species, and showed the closest phylogenetic relationships to M. caudata and M. kasago in the cox1 tree. 相似文献

Kudoa monodactyli n. sp. is described from the somatic musculature of Monodactylus argenteus from several localities in southern Queensland, Australia. This is the first record of a myxozoan parasite from the family Monodactylidae. The spores typically have five polar capsules, making this species similar to the four other five-valved Kudoa species (K. neurophila, K. muscularis, K. shulmani, K. cutanea) that have been described to date. However, morphometric measurements particularly of spore length and width make the species from M. argenteus distinct from the other species. Comparison of the small subunit ribosomal DNA sequence of this species with its congeners for which sequence data are available, provides further evidence of novelty. Kudoa monodactyli n. sp. displays 38 (of 1,554) nucleotide differences compared with rDNA sequence of Kudoa neurophila, which on phylogenetic analysis places these species in clades exclusive of each other. Phylogenetic analyses also provide evidence that the number of valves per spore in this genus is an imperfect indicator of relatedness. 相似文献

The combined effects of temperature and salinity on larval development and attachment of Balanus trigonus Darwin (Cirripedia, Balanidae) was examined under controlled laboratory conditions. Whilst larval survivorship was not affected (>70%), the duration of larval development was significantly affected by temperature and salinity. The effect of temperature was comparatively stronger than that of salinity. The majority of nauplius II larvae metamorphosed into cypris stage after 4-5 and 10-11 days at 28 °C (22-34‰) and 18 °C (22-34‰), respectively. Temperature, salinity and the duration of assay had a significant effect on cypris attachment with significant interaction among these main effects. Maximum (>80% in 6 days) and minimum percent attachment (0% in 6 days) on polystyrene surfaces were observed at 24 °C (34‰) and 18 °C (22‰), respectively. At high temperature (28 °C) and low salinity (22-26‰), larvae rapidly (4 days) developed into cyprids, but less than 33% attached. These results suggest that low larval attachment rates may lead to the low recruitment of B. trigonus in Hong Kong waters during summer when the water temperature is high (about 28 °C) and salinity is low (<26‰). 相似文献

The solitary ascidian Styela plicata (Lesueur) is a common member of epibenthic marine communities in Hong Kong, where seawater experiences extensive seasonal changes in temperature (18-30 °C) and salinity (22-34‰). In this investigation, the relative sensitivity of different developmental stages (i.e., duration of embryonic development, larval metamorphosis and post-larval growth) to various temperature (18, 22, 26 and 30 °C) and salinity (22‰, 26‰, 30‰ and 34‰) combinations is reported. Fertilized eggs did not develop at lower salinities (22‰ and 26‰). At higher salinities (30‰ and 34‰), the duration of embryonic development increased with decreasing temperature (18 °C: 11.5±0.3 h; 30 °C: 8.5±0.3 h). More than 50% of larvae spontaneously attached and metamorphosed at all the levels of temperature and salinity tested. At higher temperatures (22, 26 and 30 °C) and salinities (30‰ and 34‰), functional siphon developed in about 72 h after hatching, whereas at low temperature (18 °C), siphon developed only in <30% of individuals in about 90 h. However, none of the metamorphosed larvae developed subsequently at low salinity (22‰). When forced to swim (or delayed attachment), larvae lost about 0.27 mJ after 48 h (about 22% of the stored energy). Such a drop in energy reserves, however, was not strong enough to cause a significant impact on post-larval growth. This study suggests that temperature and salinity reductions due to seasonal monsoon may have significant effect on the embryo and post-larval growth of S. plicata in Hong Kong. 相似文献

Dalgliesh R. J. and Stewart N. P. 1982. Some effects of time, temperature and feeding on infection rates with Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in Boophilus microplus larvae. International Journal for Parasitology12: 323–326. Percentages of larval ticks in which Babesia bovis and B. bigemina parasites could be detected (infection rates) were determined after the larvae had been exposed to temperatures between 9°C and 27°C for periods of 1–35 days and then either fed on calves or heated at 37°C to stimulate babesial development. Infection rates with both species increased during 2–4 weeks after the larvae hatched, regardless of the temperature of exposure. Infection rates with B. bovis were higher after exposure of larvae to 14°C than to 27°C. This effect was less pronounced with B. bigemina. Infection rates were higher in fed larvae than in unfed, ‘heat stimulated’ larvae. The findings indicate that infected larval ticks become more efficient vectors of Babesia during the first 2–4 weeks after hatching and that repeated sampling of a tick population is necessary to determine valid infection rates. 相似文献

We surveyed 30 individuals of Tylosurus gavialoides (Castelnau) (Belonidae) collected from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, and describe three new species of Prosorhynchoides Dollfus, 1929 from them. The new species are morphologically distinct from existing Prosorhynchoides spp. and 28S and ITS-2 ribosomal DNA data further supports our morphological findings. We also conduct the first mitochondrial DNA analysis of species of Prosorhynchoides. The new species from T. gavialoides form a strongly supported clade on the basis of the two ribosomal markers, further supporting the emerging hypothesis that bucephaline clades are strongly associated with host groups. We have not observed any of the new species reported here in over 3500 surveyed individuals of other piscivorous fish in Australia, suggesting that these species are host-specific at least to belonids, if not to only T. gavialoides. Our findings support previous reports that suggest that belonids are exceptional hosts for bucephalids. We predict that further sampling of the numerous other belonid species present in Australian waters, for which nothing is known of the bucephalid fauna, will uncover further bucephalid richness. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. A myxosporean parasitizing the gill filaments of the freshwater teleost fish Centromochlus heckelii collected in the Tocantins River (Lower Amazonian Region, Brazil) is described using light and electron microscopy. This parasite produces spherical to ellipsoidal cyst-like plasmodia up to 250 μm in diameter, with a thick wall strengthened by several stratified juxtaposed crossed collagen layers, whose thickness varies according to the number of the layers. Several compressed fibroblasts are observed among the collagen fibrils. Deposits of spherical dense material are scattered at the internal periphery of the cysts. Plasmodia and different developmental stages, including immature and mature spores, filled the central region of the cysts. The spore body is ellipsoidal in valvar view and biconvex in sutural view. It is formed by two equal-sized and symmetric valves measuring 12.7 μm long (12.2–13.1) ( n =50), 6.6 μm wide (6.3–6.9) ( n =25), and 4.0 μm (3.7–4.4) ( n =20) thick. A thin layer formed by fine and anastomosed microfibrils is observed at the spore surface. Two equal, elongated pyriform polar capsules measure 2.9 μm (2.7–3.3) × 1.7 μm (1.4–2.0) ( n =25), each containing four or five oblique polar filament coils. The binucleated sporoplasm contains numerous spherical sporoplasmosomes, glycogen particles, and a large vacuole with fine granular matrix. Based on the morphological and ultrastructural differences and specificity of the host, we describe this isolate as a new myxosporidian, Myxobolus heckelii n. sp. (Myxozoa, Myxosporea). 相似文献

The progress of developmental programme in the epidermal cells of last instar larvae of Bombyx mori was determined by ecdysteroid injections in normal and in JH-treated larvae. To clarify the importance of food intake in the control of development, starved animals were also used. The instar begins with a period during which the larval programme is expressed: this occurs in the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone. Epidermal cells can thereafter secrete pupal cuticle after ecdysteroid injection although the larval programme is normally still present. During the last period only pupal characters can be expressed either in normal or in 20-hydroxyecdysone-injected larvae. These different developmental phases are not correlated with obligatory and facultative feeding periods.Transition from the first to the second phases is correlated with the absence of JH effects on pupal genes. JH applications during the second period, however, prevent the expression of pupal characters after 20-hydroxyecdysone injection. Thus, during this period, the pupal programme is not stabilized. Cellular reprogramming itself occurs at the onset of the last developmental period and is probably under the control of ecdysteroids. 相似文献

Effects of temperature and larval diet on development rates and survival of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in north Queensland, Australia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Immature development times, survival rates and adult size (wing-lengths) of the mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) were studied in the laboratory at temperatures of 10-40 degrees C. The duration of development from egg eclosion (hatching of the first instar) to adult was inversely related to temperature, ranging from 7.2 +/- 0.2 days at 35 degrees C to 39.7 +/- 2.3 days at 15 degrees C. The minimum temperature threshold for development (t) was determined as 8.3 +/- 3.6 degrees C and the thermal constant (K) was 181.2 +/- 36.1 day-degrees above the threshold. Maximum survival rates of 88-93% were obtained between 20 and 30 degrees C. Wing-length was inversely related to temperature. The sex ratio (female:male) was 1:1 at all temperatures tested (15, 20, 25 and 35 degrees C) except 30 degrees C (4:3). Under field conditions at Townsville and Charters Towers, north Queensland, the duration of immature development varied according to the container position (i.e. shaded or exposed) and the availability of food resources, as well as inversely with temperature. These data indicate that containers with an abundance of organic matter (e.g. those used for striking plant cuttings) or those amongst foliage or under trees (e.g. discarded plastic tubs and tyres) tended to produce the largest adult Ae. aegypti, which had faster development and better immature survival. As such progeny have been linked to a greater risk of dengue transmission, it would seem important to focus on control of such containers. 相似文献

At 28.5°C, oral dosages of the invasive juveniles of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and intrahemocoelic injections of its associated bacterium, Xenorhabdus luminescens, resulted in a decrease in larval feeding rate, larval wet weight, and frass production in its host, the seventh-instar larvae of Schizura concinna. 相似文献
