The concentrations of cadmium, lead, selenium, and zinc in blood and seminal plasma were determined in 76 Singapore males. Except for zinc, the concentrations were generally higher in blood than in seminal plasma (cadmium, 1.31 μg/L vs 0.61 μg/L; lead, 82.6 μg/L vs 12.4 μg/L, and selenium, 163.6 μg/L vs 71.5 μg/L). The mean concentration of zinc in seminal plasma was more than 30 times higher than in blood (202 mg/L vs 6.2 mg/L). Significant positive correlations were found between the concentrations in blood and seminal plasma for the two essential trace elements: selenium (r=0.45,p<0.001) and zinc (r=0.25,p<0.05). However, no relationships were found between the concentrations in blood and seminal plasma for two toxic metals (cadmium and lead). Significant inverse correlations were observed between Cd and Zn (r=−0.40,p<0.01), and Pb and Se (r=−0.32,p<0.05) in blood, whereas significant positive correlations were noted between Cd and Se (r=0.45,p<0.01), Cd and Zn (r=0.35,p<0.05), and Se and Zn (r=0.57,p<0.001) in seminal plasma. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the status of plasma essential trace elements selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) concentrations and their related acute-phase proteins, ceruloplasmin (Cp), ferritin, transferrin (Tf), and albumin levels in patients with vivax malaria. Plasma Cu and Zn concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Se concentrations were determined by graphite furnace AAS. Fe, Cp, Tf, and albumin levels were determined by colorimetric methods. Plasma Se, Fe, and albumin levels were found to be significantly lower (p<0.01, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) and Cu, Cp, and ferritin levels and Cu/Zn ratios were significantly higher (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) in patients when compared with those of healthy subjects. Plasma, Tf, and Zn levels were not found to be significantly different (p>0.05) in patients and controls. There were positive important correlations between Cu and Cp (r=0.908, p<0.001), Zn and albumin (r=0.633, p<0.001), and negative correlations between Fe and ferritin content (r=−0.521, p<0.05) and Fe and Tf (r=−0.616, p<0.01) in the patients group. Our findings demonstrated that plasma essential trace elements Se, Cu, and Fe change, but these changes might be dependent on acute-phase proteins, which were regulated as a part of defense strategies of the organism, induced by hormonelike substances.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the status of plasma essential trace element selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations and the effect of these elements on oxidative status in patients with childhood asthma. Plasma Se, Mn, Cu, and Zn concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and Fe concentrations, malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined by the colorimetric method. The plasma MDA/TAC ratio was calculated as an index of oxidative status. Plasma albumin levels were measured to determine nutritional status. Plasma Fe concentrations, MDA levels and the MDA/TAC ratio were significantly higher (p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.01, respectively) and Se and Mn concentrations and TAC were lower (p<0.01, p<0.05, and p<0.01, respectively) in patients when compared to the healthy subjects. Plasma Zn, Cu, and albumin levels were not found to be significantly different in patients and controls (p>0.05). There were positive relationships between plasma MDA and Fe (r=0.545, p<0.001) and TAC and Se (r=0.485, p<0.021), and a negative correlation between TAC and MDA values (r= −0.337, p<0.031) in patients with childhood asthma. However, there was no correlation between these trace elements and albumin content in patient groups. These observations suggest that increased Fe and decreased Se concentrations in patients with childhood asthma may be responsible for the oxidant/antioxidant imbalance.  相似文献

Selenium is an important trace element for brain function. Our objective was to analyse cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) selenium (Se) in 89 paediatric patients. We also studied correlations between Se and other biochemical variables (age, CSF protein concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activity and plasma Se values). Cerebrospinal fluid Se values showed a significant negative correlation with the age of patients (r = −0.476; p < 0.0001), and positive with CSF total protein concentrations and GPX activity (r = 0.446, p < 0.001; r = 0.431; p = 0.001, respectively). No association was observed between plasma and CSF Se concentrations. Median CSF Se values were 32 times lower when compared with those for plasma. In conclusion, CSF Se concentrations depend on age and total CSF protein values. The association observed between CSF Se and GPX activity suggests that Se quantification might be a reflection of some Se-dependent protein function. Cerebrospinal fluid Se values were independent of serum Se concentrations.  相似文献

Objective: This study determined whether there are racial differences in resting metabolic rate (RMR), fat oxidation, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO,max) in obese [body mass index (BMI = 34±2 kg/m2)], postmenopausal (58±2 years) women. Research Methods and Procedures: Twenty black and 20 white women were matched for fat mass and lean mass (LM), as determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. RMR and fat oxidation were measured by indirect calorimetry in the early morning after a 12-hour fast using the ventilated hood technique. VO2max was measured on a treadmill during a progressive exercise test to voluntary exhaustion. Results: RMR, adjusted for differences in LM, was 5% higher in white than black women (1566±27 and 1490±26 kcal/day, respectively; p<0. 05); and fat oxidation rate was 17% higher in white than black women (87±4 and 72±3 g/day, respectively; p<0. 01). VO2max (L/minute) was 150 mL per minute (8%) higher (p<0. 05) in white than black women. VO2max correlated with LM in black (r = 0. 44, p = 0. 05) and white (r=0. 53, p<0. 05) women, but the intercept of the regression line was higher in white than black women (p<0. 05), with no significant difference in slopes. In a multiple regression model including race, body weight, LM, and age, LM was the only independent predictor of RMR (r2 = 0. 46, p<0. 0001), whereas race was the only independent predictor of fat oxidation (r2 = 0. 18,p<0. 05). The best predictors of VO,max were LM (r2 = 0. 22, p<0. 05) and race (cumulative r2 = 0. 30, p<0. 05). Discussion: These results show there are racial differences in metabolic predictors of obesity. Determination of whether these ethnic differences lead to, or are an effect of, obesity status or other lifestyle factors requires further study.  相似文献

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and therefore, accurate methods to estimate VAT have been investigated. Computerized tomography (CT) is the gold standard measure of VAT, but its use is limited. We therefore compared waist measures and two dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) methods (Ley and Lunar) that quantify abdominal regions of interest (ROIs) to CT‐derived VAT in 166 black and 143 white South African women. Anthropometry, DXA ROI, and VAT (CT at L4–L5) were measured. Black women were younger (P < 0.001), shorter (P < 0.001), and had higher body fat (P < 0.05) than white women. There were no ethnic differences in waist (89.7 ± 18.2 cm vs. 90.1 ± 15.6 cm), waist:height ratio (WHtR, 0.56 ± 0.12 vs. 0.54 ± 0.09), or DXA ROI (Ley: 2.2 ± 1.5 vs. 2.1 ± 1.4; Lunar: 2.3 ± 1.4 vs. 2.3 ± 1.5), but black women had less VAT, after adjusting for age, height, weight, and fat mass (76 ± 34 cm2 vs. 98 ± 35 cm2; P < 0.001). Ley ROI and Lunar ROI were correlated in black (r = 0.983) and white (r = 0.988) women. VAT correlated with DXA ROI (Ley: r = 0.729 and r = 0.838, P < 0.01; Lunar: r = 0.739 and r = 0.847, P < 0.01) in black and white women, but with increasing ROI android fatness, black women had less VAT. Similarly, VAT was associated with waist (r = 0.732 and r = 0.836, P < 0.01) and WHtR (r = 0.721 and r = 0.824, P < 0.01) in black and white women. In conclusion, although DXA‐derived ROIs correlate well with VAT as measured by CT, they are no better than waist or WHtR. Neither DXA nor anthropometric measures are able to accurately distinguish between high and low levels of VAT between population groups.  相似文献

Serum selenium levels were determined cross-sectionally in 57 HIV-infected patients who were classified according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 1993 classification system. Mean serum selenium levels were lower in CDC stage II (58.7±12.2 μg/L;p<0.01;n=18) and stage III (47.6±11.3 μg/L;p<0.01;n=19) HIV-infected patients, than in healthy subjects (80.6±9.6 μg/L;n=48) and stage I patients (73.6±16.5 μg/L;n=20). Serum selenium levels were positively correlated with CD4 count, CD4/8 ratio, hematocrit, and serum albumin (r=0.42;r=0.39;r=0.48; andr=0.45;p<0.01, respectively) and inversely with serum levels of thymidine kinase (r=−0.49;p<0.01;n=49) and β2-microglobulin (r=−0.46;p<0.001;n=49). In addition, serum selenium levels in 20 randomly selected AIDS-free individuals (CDC I:n=10; CDC II:n=10) were inversely correlated with serum concentrations of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR) types I and II. There was no correlation with serum immuneglobulin A and total serum protein levels. The results show that the progressive deprivation of serum selenium in HIV-infection is associated with loss of CD4+-cells and with increased levels of markers of disease progression and inflammatory response.  相似文献

Leptin, the obesity gene protein product, is a hormone with multiple physiological functions in the human. However, there are few reports in the literature on its role in trace element metabolism in the normal population. Therefore, we investigated the association among serum leptin, zinc, copper, and zinc/copper ratio in 570 healthy men and women aged 15 yr and older. Serum leptin assay was done with a commercial enzymelinked immunosorbent assay kit; serum zinc and copper levels were measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Serum leptin was found to be positively associated with age (r=0.254, p<0.001), sex (r=0.406, p<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (r=0.553, p<0.001), and serum copper (r=0.419, p<0.001), but negatively associated with the zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.423, p<0.001). There was no significant association between serum leptin and zinc (r=−0.131, p>0.05). When the confounding effects of age, sex, and BMI were removed, serum leptin was still positively associated with serum copper (r=0.197, p=0.02) and the serum zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.182, p=0.03). These results suggest that copper and not zinc has an effect on serum leptin levels.  相似文献

Autism is a multi-factorial pathology observed in children with altered levels of essential and elevated levels of toxic elements. There are also studies reporting a decrease in nutritional trace elements in the hair and nail of autistic children with healthy controls; moreover, bioelements have been shown to play an important role in the central nervous system. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to assess the levels of trace elements like copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and selenium (Se) and toxic elements like mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in the hair and nail samples of autistic children and to evaluate whether the level of these elements could be correlated with the severity of autism. The subjects of the study were 45 autistic children with different grades of severity (low (LFA), medium (MFA), and high (HFA) functioning autism) according to Childhood Autism Rating Scale, n = 15 children in each group and 50 healthy children (age and sex matched). The boys and girls ratio involved in this study was 4:1, and they were 4-12 years of age. The study observed a valid indication of Cu body burden in the autistic children. The children with different grades of autism showed high significance (p < 0.001) in the level of copper in their hair and nail samples when compared to healthy controls. The level of Cu in the autistic children could be correlated with their degree of severity (more the Cu burden severe is autism). The study showed a significant elevation (p < 0.001) in the levels of toxic metals Pb and Hg in both hair and nail samples of autistic children when compared to healthy control group. The elevation was much pronounced in LFA group subjects when compared among autistic groups MFA and HFA. The levels of trace elements Mg and Se were significantly decreased (p < 0.001) in autistic children when compared to control. The trace element Zn showed significant variation in both hair and nails of LFA group children when compared to control group and other study groups. The significant elevation in the concentration of Cu, Pb, and Hg and significant decrease in the concentration of Mg and Se observed in the hair and nail samples of autistic subjects could be well correlated with their degrees of severity.  相似文献

Blood and urine perchloroethylene and urine trichloroacetic acid, as markers of exposure, and serum AST, ALT, GGT and creatinine, urine total solutes and proteins, angiotensin converting enzyme, N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase and glutamine synthetase, as markers of effect, were measured in 40 dry-cleaning and 45 ironing-shop female workers. Average perchloroethylene air level in the dry-cleaning shops was 59.7 mg m-3, i.e. three-fold lower than the current A.C.G.I.H. TLV-TWA (170 mg m-3). No statistically significant difference in the mean values of any of the effect markers was observed between the two groups, except for AST which was significantly higher in drycleaners. In addition, a statistically significant correlation was observed in dry-cleaners between environmental perchloroethylene and total urinary solutes (r = 0.308, p &lt; 0.05) or urine glutamine synthetase (r= 0.469, p &lt; 0 .01), between glutamine synthetase and blood perchloroethylene in post-shift (r= 0.406, p &lt; 0.01) or urinary perchloroethylene in post(r= 0.571, p &lt; 0.001) or pre-shift (r= 0.586, p &lt; 0.001), and between urinary perchloroethylene in pre-shift and GGT (r= 0.407, p &lt; 0.05). Interestingly, some statistically significant correlations between exposure and effect indices were found in ironing-shop workers alone, as in all subjects. Finally, transaminases, GGT and total urinary proteins were influenced by age and alcohol consumption which were significantly higher in dry-cleaners, thus providing an explanation for some of the correlations observed. In conclusion, our results show a dose-related increase of glutamine synthetase activity,a marker of damage of the pars recta of the kidney proximal tubule, in the urine of female subjects exposed to perchloroethylene concentrations in the work environment lower than current A.C.G.I.H. It is thought that calcium and magnesium may be related to metabolic disorders such as obesity and metabolic syndrome; however, to date, there have been few studies investigating the association between serum calcium and magnesium levels and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged male adults. We aimed to investigate the association between serum calcium and magnesium levels and metabolic syndrome in Korean middle-aged male adults. Study subjects included 213 men aged 30∼60 years. MetS risk score is determined by adding the number of risk factors, waist circumference, triacylglyceride (TG), HDL cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure (BP). The study population was divided into three groups according to the MetS risk score: group I (MetS risk score ≤1; n = 106), group II (MetS risk score = 2; n = 51), and group III (MetS risk score ≥3; n = 56). The serum Ca, according to increase of MetS risk score, was significantly higher (p < 0.001), and there was no significant difference in serum Mg concentration among the three groups. Subjects with high TG and high BP had higher serum calcium levels than those without such abnormalities. Subjects with higher glucose had lower serum magnesium levels than those without such abnormality. The correlation analysis indicated that the serum Ca had positive correlations with the MetS risk score (r = 0.1769, p < 0.01), serum TG (r = 0.2516, p < 0.001), and DBP (r = 0.2246, p < 0.01). The correlation analysis indicated that the serum Mg had an inverse relationship with serum glucose (r = −0.2404, p < 0.001). In conclusion, serum Ca had positive association with TG and BP, while serum Mg had negative association with serum glucose after adjusting age and BMI among the middle-aged Korean male adults.  相似文献

The population of about 300 6-year-old preschool children was studied for lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in deciduous teeth, scalp hair, and capillary blood. Zinc (Zn) content in hair was also measured due to its possible interferences with the elements studied. The Pb and Cd contents were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction, and Zn, by flame method. Metal levels found were comparable to those in European countries. Positive correlations between Pb and Cd in the same and different tissues were widespread (r = 0.23–0.68). A positive correlation was found between Pb in teeth and blood (r = 0.65, p < 0.001). Pb blood threshold 100 μg L−1 referred to 2.6 μg g−1 Pb in teeth. Predictability of this Pb teeth limit was 14% vs. 5% for Pb blood. Strong negative correlation was found between hair Pb and Zn (r = −0.68, p < 0.001). Enhanced Cd and Zn levels in hair were associated with the household drinking water hardness. The associations with some other environmental and behavioral factors were also presented and discussed. The results proved the advantage of analysis of primary teeth for Pb exposure screening of preschool children.  相似文献

Like many other serious acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) shows seasonal variation, being most frequent in the winter. We sought to investigate whether age, gender, and hypertension influence this pattern. We studied 4014 (2259 male and 1755 female) consecutive patients with AMI presenting to St. Anna Hospital of Ferrara, Italy between January 1998 and December 2004. Some 1131 (28.2%) of the AMI occurred in persons <65 yrs of age, and 2883 (71.8%) in those ≥65 yrs of age. AMI was over‐represented in males (82% in the <65 yr group vs. 56.6% in the ≥65 yr group (χ2=13.99; p<0.001). Hypertension had been previously documented in 964 (24%) of the cases. There were 691 (17.2%) fatal case outcomes; fatal outcomes were significantly higher among the 3054 normotensive (n=614 or 20.1%) than the 964 hypertensive cases (n=77 or 8%; χ2=74.94, p<0.001). AMIs were most frequent in the winter (n=1076 or 26.8% of all the events) and least in the summer (n=924 or 23.0% of all the events; χ2=12.36, p=0.007). The greatest number of AMIs occurred in December (n=379 or 9.44%), and the lowest number in September (n=293 or 7.3%; χ2=11.1, p=0.001). Inferential chronobiological (Cosinor) analysis identified a significant annual pattern in AMI in those ≥65 yrs of age, with a peak between December and February—January for the total sample (p<0.005), January for the sample of males (p=0.014), February for fatal infarctions (p=0.017), and December for non‐fatal infarctions (p=0.006). No such temporal variations were detected in any of these categories in those <65 yrs of age. The annual pattern in AMI was also verified by Cosinor analysis in the following hypertensive subgroups: hypertensive males (n=552: January, p=0.014), non‐fatal infarctions in hypertensive patients (n=887: January, p=0.018), and elderly normotensives (n=1556: November, p=0.007).  相似文献

Soluble glass bolus (SGB) with selenium (Se) was administered intraruminally to Se-deficient Philippine does to determine its effect on milk Se and to correlate the Se contents of does' milk and blood of does and kids. Five months after the Se administration, the does in the treated group (n=14) had higher (p<0.01) Se content in their blood (62.2 vs 25.7 μg/L) and milk (5.1 vs 2.5 μg/L) than does in control group (n=13). Consequently, the blood Se of the kids (n=14) from the treated does was higher (p<0.05) than those kids (n=13) in the control group (28.0 vs 5.1 μg/L). Blood and milk Se of does and blood Se of their kids correlated (p<0.01) with each other. The increased Se level of does' milk because of Se supplementation was not regarded as a health hazard to humans.  相似文献

The material for this study was obtained from culled European bison (Linnaeus, 1758) originating from both captive breeding and free-ranging populations in Białowieża and Borecka Forests (north-east Poland), and was mostly collected from November until April. Mass difference between the right and left testis of the same individual up to 30% was considered to be physiological asymmetry, which proved typical of the species. Hypoplasia or atrophy of the testes exceeding 30% in size, were found in 37 males (13.6% of the examined animals;n=272). Cryptorchidism was recorded in 20 bison culled in Białowieża Forest at the age over 1 year (10.6% of individuals at the same age;n=188). We registered the weight of testes of 259 males aged 2 months to 20 years. In the examined males, no distinct predominance in size and weight between the right and left testes was observed. The weight of testes was significantly correlated with age (r=0.85,p < 0.0001) and body weight (r=0.93,p < 0.0001). The heaviest testicles belonged to older and sexually mature bulls aged 6–12 years (mean 216 g) and to old ones over 13 years (mean 242 g). Two testis measurements (length and width) were taken from 136 culled males, while two additional measurements (total length with the cauda of epididymis and circumference) from 65 males. The length and width of the testes were moderately correlated with age (r=0.31 andr=0.20,p < 0.01) and highly significantly correlated with testis (r=0.79,p < 0.001) and body weight (r=0.92,p < 0.001).  相似文献

Hair mercury (HHg) concentration is a biomarker of exposure that is widely used to assess environmental contamination by fish methylmercury and neurodevelopment in children. In the Rio Madeira basin (Brazilian Amazon), total HHg concentrations in 649 mother–infant pairs were measured at birth (prenatal exposure) and after 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding; these mother–infant pairs were from high fish-eating communities (urban, n?=?232; rural, n?=?35; and Riverine, n?=?262) and low fish-eating tin-miner settlers (n?=?120). Differences in kinetics were seen between Hg exposure from fish consumption and environmental exposure to a tin-ore mining environment. Overall maternal HHg concentrations (at childbirth and after 6 months of lactation) were higher than those of infant HHg. However, the relative change in HHg after 6 months of lactation showed that mothers decreased HHg while infants increased HHg. The relative change showed a consistently higher increase for girls than boys with a statistical significance only in high fish-eating mothers. The correlation coefficients between maternal and newborn hair were high and statistically significant for mothers living in urban (r?=?0.66, p?<?0.001), rural (r?=?0.89, p?<?0.001), and Riverine (r?=?0.89, p?<?0.001) communities not for tin miner settlers (r?=?0.07, p?=?0.427). After 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding, correlation coefficients showed high correlation coefficients and statistical significance for all groups (urban, r?=?0.73, p?<?0.001; rural, r?=?0.88, p?<?0.001; Riverine, r?=?0.91, p?<?0.001) except for Tin miners (r?=??0.07, p?=?0.428). A linear model analysis was used to assess the longitudinal associations of maternal total HHg and total HHg at birth (0 days) and 6 months of age in exclusively breastfed infants. Regression analysis significantly predicted HHg in newborn from maternal HHg for high fish-eating maternal-infant pairs. Conclusion: The concentration of mercury accumulated in newborn tissues (in utero and during breastfeeding) relevant to both, maternal sources and infant exposure, can be reliably assessed from maternal hair.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate zinc levels in three biological compartments (serum, erythrocytes and hair) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as compared to healthy individuals. Zinc levels in serum, erythrocytes and hair (in 74 patients with RA and 30 healthy individuals) were assessed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The mean hair zinc content was significantly lower in RA patients as compared to healthy individuals (p < 0.001). Moreover, a positive correlation was observed in the RA patient group between the erythrocyte zinc levels and the prednisone dose (r s = 0.48, p < 0.05), and a negative correlation was found in this population between the serum zinc levels and disease duration (r s = −0.42, p < 0.0006). In conclusion, it seems that hair may be a useful complementary study material for evaluating “zinc status” in rheumatoid arthritis patients.  相似文献

Fish species may contain considerable amounts of trace elements, such as selenium (Se), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg). The present study investigated the relationships between dietary intake of these elements and cutaneous bleeding time and blood lipids in 32 healthy volunteers. For 6 wk, one group (n=11) consumed approx 250 g Se-rich fish daily, providing them with an average Se intake of 115±31 μg Se/d, Hg intake of 18±8 μg/d, and As intake of 806±405 μg/d, all values analyzed in 4-d duplicate food collections. To study the effect of Se alone, one group (n=11) included Se-rich bread in their normal diet, giving them a Se intake (135±25 μg/d) that was comparable to the fish group. A control group (n=10) ate their normal diet, providing 77±25 gmg Se/d, 3.1±2.5 μg Hg/d, and 101±33 μg As/d. The dietary As load strongly correlated both with bleeding times and changes in bleeding times (r=0.48,p<0.01 andr=0.54,p<0.002, respectively). Dietary Hg showed a positive correlation with LDL-cholesterol (r=0.55,p<0.01), whereas dietary Hg in the fish group showed a strong negative relationship with HDL-cholesterol (r=?0.76,p<0.01). Selenium seemed to have only a modest effect on bleeding time. Objective: Previous studies have suggested that obesity enhances the inflammatory response, producing macromolecules involved in the induction and/or maintenance of increased erythrocyte aggregation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the correlation between inflammation markers, erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation, and the degree of obesity and to assess phosphatidylserine expression on erythrocyte surface membrane of obese vs. nonobese individuals. Research Methods and Procedures: Erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation in the peripheral venous blood was evaluated by using a new biomarker, phosphatidylserine expression was assessed by means of flow cytometry, and markers of inflammation were measured in 65 subjects: 30 obese [body mass index (BMI) = 41 ± 7.7 kg/m2] and 35 nonobese (BMI = 24 ± 2.7 kg/m2) individuals. Pearson correlations and Student's t test were performed. Results: A highly significant difference was noted in the degree of erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation and markers of inflammation between the study groups. BMI correlated with erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation (r = 0.42, p = 0.001), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.42, p = 0.001), high‐sensitive C‐reactive protein (r = 0.55, p < 10?4), fibrinogen (r = 0.37, p = 0.004), and white blood cell count (r = 0.45, p < 10?4). The degree of erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation correlated with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.5, p < 10?4), high‐sensitive C‐reactive protein (r = 0.56, p < 10?4), fibrinogen (r = 0.54, p < 10?4), and white blood cell count (r = 0.32, p = 0.01). Discussion: Our results suggest that obesity‐related erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation is probably mediated through increased concentrations of adhesive macromolecules in the circulation and not necessarily through hyperlipidemia or phosphatidylserine exposure on erythrocyte's membrane.  相似文献

BackgroundPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Accumulating evidence has suggested that selenium (Se) is of importance for optimal function of the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate the associations of selenium and selenoprotein P (SePP) with asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and lipid profile in women with PCOS.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 125 females aged 18–45 years diagnosed with PCOS were recruited. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was applied to gather the relevant demographic characteristics, detailed clinical information, and lifestyle habits of participants. Fasting blood samples were obtained to measure biochemical parameters. Serum concentrations of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), ADMA, and lipid profiles as well as anthropometric measurements were assessed across tertiles of serum Se and SePP concentrations.ResultsThere was a positive correlation between serum Se and SePP concentrations (r = 0.434, p < 0.001). Serum Se level was inversely correlated with ADMA (r = −0.21, p = 0.025) and TG (r = −0.17, p = 0.041) concentrations. There were also inverse correlations between SePP and ADMA (r = −0.34, p < 0.001), TG (r = −0.21, p = 0.019), and oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) (r = −0.25, p = 0.007) levels. No significant relationship was found between serum Se and SePP concentrations with total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein-A1 (Apo-A1), apolipoprotein-B (Apo-B100), total testosterone, SHBG, and free androgen index as well as anthropometric parameters (All p > 0.05).ConclusionThe present study found that Se and SePP levels were inversely correlated with ADMA and TG concentrations as well as ox-LDL levels.  相似文献
