Abstract The effcct of the transition from fully to partially wetted soil voluine on transpiration rate and hydraulic conductance of mature citrus trees was examined in a 23-year-old, coninicrcial, sprinklerirrigated, Shanio u t i orange orchard. I rriga t i on frequency was determined by the rate of water loss from the soil, a s measured by neutron probes. The hydraulic conductance of tlic tree was coniputed from the rclationship between sap flow i n the trunk and leaf water potential. The diurnal valucs of leaf water potential and sap flow shifted towards lower levels as tlie water stored in the root zone was depleted. In the fully wetted soil volume the tree hydraulic conductance remained constant throughout the irrigation period, from June to Novcniber. However, partial wetting of the soil volume (40%) caused a reduction in the hydraulic conductance of the tree. Tlie decreased hydraulic conductance is attributed to tlie permanent interruption of water transport in part of tlie root system. Tlie rcsults of tlie experiment suggest that despite tlie increase of irrigation frequency, partial wetting intensifies water stress in tlie trees.

Size-related changes in hydraulic architecture, carbon allocation and gas exchange of Sclerolobium paniculatum (Leguminosae), a dominant tree species in Neotropical savannas of central Brazil (Cerrado), were investigated to assess their potential role in the dieback of tall individuals. Trees greater than ∼6-m-tall exhibited more branch damage, larger numbers of dead individuals, higher wood density, greater leaf mass per area, lower leaf area to sapwood area ratio (LA/SA), lower stomatal conductance and lower net CO2 assimilation than small trees. Stem-specific hydraulic conductivity decreased, while leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity remained nearly constant, with increasing tree size because of lower LA/SA in larger trees. Leaves were substantially more vulnerable to embolism than stems. Large trees had lower maximum leaf hydraulic conductance ( K leaf) than small trees and all tree sizes exhibited lower K leaf at midday than at dawn. These size-related adjustments in hydraulic architecture and carbon allocation apparently incurred a large physiological cost: large trees received a lower return in carbon gain from their investment in stem and leaf biomass compared with small trees. Additionally, large trees may experience more severe water deficits in dry years due to lower capacity for buffering the effects of hydraulic path-length and soil water deficits.

Summary The impact of the xylem-tapping mistletoe Phoradendron juniperinum on the nitrogen and water relations of its host Juniperus osteosperma was investigated under natural field conditions. Leaf conductance, leaf water potential, and leaf Kjeldahl nitrogen contents were followed through the growing season on mistletoes, infected junipers (separating infected from uninfected stems) and uninfected junipers. Infected trees experienced lower leaf water potentials than uninfected trees and also had lower leaf conductances and lower leaf nitrogen contents. Infected juniper stems had higher conductances than uninfected stems. Mistletoes had higher leaf nitrogen contents than their hosts and much of this nitrogen appeared as arginine, a potential nitrogen storage compound. Photosynthetic rates (per unit leaf area) were significantly higher in junipers than in the mistletoe, and higher in the uninfected than infected junipers. Water use efficiencies as estimated by carbon isotope ratios were significantly lower in mistletoes than in their hosts. Increased mistletoe infestation appeared to increase absolute water use efficiency of both host and mistletoe.Dedicated to Professors D. Wiens (Salt Lake City) and H. Ziegler (München) for initiating our curiosity in mistletoes

Understanding the pathways through which drought stress kills woody vegetation can improve projections of the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and carbon-cycle feedbacks. Continuous in situ measurements of whole trees during drought and as trees die hold promise to illuminate physiological pathways but are relatively rare. We monitored leaf characteristics, water use efficiency, water potentials, branch hydraulic conductivity, soil moisture, meteorological variables, and sap flux on mature healthy and sudden aspen decline-affected (SAD) trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) ramets over two growing seasons, including a severe summer drought. We calculated daily estimates of whole-ramet hydraulic conductance and modeled whole-ramet assimilation. Healthy ramets experienced rapid declines of whole-ramet conductance during the severe drought, providing an analog for what likely occurred during the previous drought that induced SAD. Even in wetter periods, SAD-affected ramets exhibited fivefold lower whole-ramet hydraulic conductance and sevenfold lower assimilation than counterpart healthy ramets, mediated by changes in leaf area, water use efficiency, and embolism. Extant differences between healthy and SAD ramets reveal that ongoing multi-year forest die-off is primarily driven by loss of whole-ramet hydraulic capability, which in turn limits assimilation capacity. Branch-level measurements largely captured whole-plant hydraulic limitations during drought and mortality, but whole-plant measurements revealed a potential role of other losses in the hydraulic continuum. Our results highlight the importance of a whole-tree perspective in assessing physiological pathways to tree mortality and indicate that the effects of mortality on these forests’ assimilation and productivity are larger than expected based on canopy leaf area differences.

Aims

To evaluate the impact of the amount and distribution of soil water on xylem anatomy and xylem hydraulics of current-year shoots, plant water status and stomatal conductance of mature ‘Manzanilla’ olive trees.

Methods

Measurements of water potential, stomatal conductance, hydraulic conductivity, vulnerability to embolism, vessel diameter distribution and vessel density were made in trees under full irrigation with non-limiting soil water conditions, localized irrigation, and rain-fed conditions.

Results

All trees showed lower stomatal conductance values in the afternoon than in the morning. The irrigated trees showed water potential values around ?1.4 and ?1.6 MPa whereas the rain-fed trees reached lower values. All trees showed similar specific hydraulic conductivity (K s) and loss of conductivity values during the morning. In the afternoon, K s of rain-fed trees tended to be lower than of irrigated trees. No differences in vulnerability to embolism, vessel-diameter distribution and vessel density were observed between treatments.

Conclusions

A tight control of stomatal conductance was observed in olive which allowed irrigated trees to avoid critical water potential values and keep them in a safe range to avoid embolism. The applied water treatments did not influence the xylem anatomy and vulnerability to embolism of current-year shoots of mature olive trees.

The experiment was carried out in a research field near Murcia, Spain, over a 3-week period between September 26 and October 16, 2000. Sixteen trees were used in the experiment, eight of which were placed under a rectangular shading net, while the other eight were maintained in the open air. Trees were irrigated once per day and, after October 5th, water was witheld from eight trees (four shaded and four unprotected for 5 days). The leaf stomatal conductance and the photosynthesis rates were higher in the shaded trees than in the exposed plants, probably because the leaf water potential was lower in the unshaded plants. This higher leaf conductance partially compensated for the effect of low radiation on transpiration, and the reduction of daily sap flow registered in shaded trees was only around 10-20%. The net also affected trunk diameter changes, with the shaded trees showing lower values of maximum daily shrinkage. Soil water deficit and high radiation had a similar effect on plant water parameters, lowering leaf water potential, leaf stomatal conductance, and the photosynthesis rate. The effects of both conditions were accumulative and so the exposed water-stressed plants showed the lowest values of total hydraulic resistance and water use efficiency, while the shaded well-irrigated trees registered the highest values for both parameters. For this reason, we think that net shading could be extended to apricot culture in many areas in which irrigation water is scarce and insolation is high.

Different spatial distributions of soil moisture were imposed on field-grown grapevines by applying the same irrigation volumes to the entire (DI; deficit irrigation) or part of the (PRD; partial root zone drying) root zone. Five treatments were applied: controls irrigated at 60% ETc (crop evapotranspiration) for the whole season (308 mm year(-1)); DI-1 and PRD-1 that received the same irrigation as controls before fruit set, 30% ETc from fruit set to harvest and 45% ETc post-harvest (192 mm year(-1)); and DI-2 and PRD-2 that were the same, except that 15% ETc was applied from fruit set to harvest (142 mm year(-1)). Compared with DI-1, PRD-1 maintained higher leaf area post-veraison and increased root water uptake, whole-plant hydraulic conductance, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis, but decreased intrinsic gas exchange efficiency without causing differences in leaf xylem abscisic acid (ABA) concentration. Compared with DI-2, PRD-2 increased leaf xylem ABA concentration and decreased root water uptake, whole-plant hydraulic conductance, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis, mainly at the beginning of PRD cycles. Distinctive PRD effects (e.g. greater stomatal closure) depended on the volumetric soil water content of the wet root zone, as predicted from a model of root-to-shoot ABA signalling.

Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal Pinus halepensis plants were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation for four months and then rehydrated for 30 d. Water stress affected plants growth and mycorrhizal association was unable to avoid the effects of drought on plant growth. However, when irrigation was re-established the increase in height, number of shoots, total dry mass, and chlorophyll content in the mycorrhizal plants were greater than in non-mycorrhizal plants. The decrease in soil water content decreased the leaf water potential, leaf pressure potential and stomatal conductance. These decreases were higher for nonmycorrhizal than for mycorrhizal plants, indicating that the mycorrhizal fungi permit a higher water uptake from the dry soils. The total content of inorganic solutes was not changed by presence of mycorrhizae.

The aim of this study was to evaluate how the summer and winter conditions affect the photosynthesis and water relations of well-watered orange trees, considering the diurnal changes in leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and leaf water potential (Ψ) of potted-plants growing in a subtropical climate. The diurnal pattern of photosynthesis in young citrus trees was not significantly affected by the environmental changes when compared the summer and winter seasons. However, citrus plants showed higher photosynthetic performance in summer, when plants fixed 2.9 times more CO2 during the diurnal period than in the winter season. Curiously, the winter conditions were more favorable to photosynthesis of citrus plants, when considering the air temperature (< 29 °C), leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (< 2.4 kPa) and photon flux density (maximum values near light saturation) during the diurnal period. Therefore, low night temperature was the main environmental element changing the photosynthetic performance and water relations of well-watered plants during winter. Lower whole-plant hydraulic conductance, lower shoot hydration and lower stomatal conductance were noticed during winter when compared to the summer season. In winter, higher ratio between the apparent electron transport rate and leaf CO2 assimilation was verified in afternoon, indicating reduction in electron use efficiency by photosynthesis. The high radiation loading in the summer season did not impair the citrus photochemistry, being photoprotective mechanisms active. Such mechanisms were related to increases in the heat dissipation of excessive light energy at the PSII level and to other metabolic processes consuming electrons, which impede the citrus photoinhibition under high light conditions.

The concept of root contact hypothesizes that the absorbing roots grown in sandy soil are only partially effective in water uptake. Co-ordination of water supply and demand in the plant requires that the capacity for water uptake from the soil should correspond to an operational rate of water loss from the leaves. To examine how the plant hydraulic system responds to variations in soil texture or evaporative demand through long-term acclimation, an experiment was carried on cotton plants (Gossypium herbaceum L.), where three grades of soil texture and three grades of evaporative demand were applied for the whole life cycle of the plants. Plants were harvested 50 and 90 d (fully grown) after sowing and root length and leaf area measured. At 90 d hydraulic conductance was measured as the ratio of sap flow (measured with sap flow sensors or gravimetrically) and water potential. Results showed that for plants grown at the same evaporative demand, those in sandy soil, where root-specific hydraulic conductance was low, developed more absorbing roots than those grown in heavy-textured soil, where root specific conductance was high. This resulted in the same leaf specific hydraulic conductance (1.8 × 10−4 kg s−1 Mpa−1 m−2) for all three soils. For plants grown in the same sandy soil, those subjected to strong evaporative demand developed more absorbing roots and higher leaf-specific hydraulic conductance than those grown under mild evaporative demand. It is concluded that when soil texture or atmospheric evaporative demand varies, plants co-ordinate their capacities for liquid phase and vapour phase water transport through long-term acclimation of the hydraulic system, or plastic morphological adaptation of the root/leaf ratio.

Hydraulic properties and gas exchange were measured in branches of two tropical tree species (Simarouba amara Aubl. and Tapirira guianensis Aubl.) in a moist lowland forest in Panama. Branch-level sapflow, leaf-level stomatal conductance, and water potential measurements, along with measurements of specific hydraulic conductivity of stems in crown tops, were used to relate hydraulic parameters to leaf conductance in two individuals of each species. Branches of the taller trees for each species (28 m, 31 m) showed much higher leaf-specific hydraulic conductance and leaf vapor-phase conductance than those of the smaller trees (18m, 23m). This was probably related to the leaf-to-sapwood area ratio in branches of taller trees, which was less than half that in branches of smaller trees. Dye staining showed evidence of massive cavitation in all trees, indicating that stomata do not control leaf water potential to prevent xylem cavitation in these species. Stomatal conductance of intact leaves also appeared to be insensitive to leaf area removal treatment of nearby foliage. Nevertheless, a simple mass-balance model of water flux combining hydraulic and vapor transport was in close agreement with observed maximal vapor-phase conductance in the four trees (r2=0.98, P=0.006). Our results suggest that the major organismal control over water flux in these species is by structural (leaf area) rather than physiological (stomatal) means.

Sustained cyclic oscillations in stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, and sap flow were observed in young orange trees growing under natural conditions. The oscillations had an average period of approximately 70 min. Water uptake by the roots and loss by the leaves was characterized by large time lags which led to imbalances between water supply and demand in the leaves. The bulk of the lag in response between stomatal movements and the upstream water balance resided downstream of the branch, with branch level sap flow lagging behind the stomatal conductance by approximately 20 min while the stem sap flow had a much shorter time lag of only 5 min behind the branch sap flow. This imbalance between water uptake and loss caused transient changes in internal water deficits which were closely correlated to the dynamics of the leaf water potential. The hydraulic resistance of the whole tree fluctuated throughout the day, suggesting transient changes in the efficiency of water supply to the leaves. A simple whole-tree water balance model was applied to describe the dynamics of water transport in the young orange trees, and typical values of the hydraulic parameters of the transpiration stream were estimated. In addition to the hydro-passive stomatal movements, whole-tree water balance appears to be an important factor in the generation of stomatal oscillations.

Changes in leaf and canopy water potential of sugar beet growingin soil of decreasing water content depended on soil water potentialand were independent of water flux from the plant when thiswas varied by changing the water vapour content of the air.The calculated hydraulic conductance of the plant increasedas flux increased and decreased as leaf water potential decreasedand as the plant aged. The conductances to water vapour of individualleaves and of the canopy decreased as leaf water potential decreasedand increased with increasing humidity of the air. The lattereffect was independent of changes in leaf water potential. Theconductances were not affected by the rate of evaporation orleaf temperature. The rate of photosynthesis was directly relatedto leaf conductance except in severely stressed, mature leavesin which leaf water potential had a more direct effect on photosynthesis.Stomatal conductances, transpiration, and photosynthesis weregreater in young leaves than mature leaves on the same plantand at the same leaf water potential. These results are discussedin relation to current agricultural irrigation practices usedfor sugar beet.

Water deficits affect citrus physiology, yield, fruit size and quality. Citrus can respond to drought stress conditions through endogenous hormonal regulation of water status and leaf abscission. In this work, we assayed the efficiency of an amendment to soilless media in delaying the drought stress effect in young citrus seedlings and trees. Substrate amendment promoted plant survival of citrus seedlings subjected to several cycles of drought stress and rehydration. In budded trees, the amendment increased substrate water content, leaf water potential, leaf number, root biomass, CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance over that of control plants growing in non-amended substrates. We conclude that the substrate amendment reduced the damaging effects of drought stress in citrus plants. The longer survival of seedlings in the amended treatment together with the reduction in leaf abscission and the improvement of physiological parameters, can account for a higher vigour of citrus grown under water stress conditions.

Water transport through a microporous tube-soil-plant system was investigated by measuring the response of soil and plant water status to step change reductions in the water pressure within the tubes. Soybeans were germinated and grown in a porous ceramic 'soil' at a porous tube water pressure of -0.5 kpa for 28 d. During this time, the soil matric potential was nearly in equilibrium with tube water pressure. Water pressure in the porous tubes was then reduced to either -1.0, -1.5 or -2.0 kPa. Sap flow rates, leaf conductance and soil, root and leaf water potentials were measured before and after this change. A reduction in porous tube water pressure from -0.5 to -1.0 or -1.5 kPa did not result in any significant change in soil or plant water status. A reduction in porous tube water pressure to -2.0 kPa resulted in significant reductions in sap flow, leaf conductance, and soil, root and leaf water potentials. Hydraulic conductance, calculated as the transpiration rate/delta psi between two points in the water transport pathway, was used to analyse water transport through the tube-soil-plant continuum. At porous tube water pressures of -0.5 to-1.5 kPa soil moisture was readily available and hydraulic conductance of the plant limited water transport. At -2.0 kPa, hydraulic conductance of the bulk soil was the dominant factor in water movement.

Using the heat pulse and other techniques, the hydraulic architecture of apricot trees was mapped out. The flows (overall flow, flow across the four main branches) and forces (water potential differences between xylem and leaves) measured allowed us to quantify hydraulic conductance of branches and of the root/soil resistance. The experiment was carried out in a commercial orchard of 11-year-old apricot trees (Prunus armeniaca L., cv. Búlida, on Real Fino apricot rootstock) during 1 week (October 27–November 3, 1998). Three representative trees with a cylindrical trunk divided into four main branches of different sizes, orientation and local microclimate were chosen for the experiment. Sap flow was measured throughout the experimental period. Twelve sets of heat-pulse probes were used, one for each main branch. The diurnal course of the environmental conditions, the fraction of the area irradiated and leaf water relations were also considered in each main branch. The relationships between leaf water potential, xylem water potential and transpiration were established for different branches and also for the total plant. Using the slopes of these regressions, total plant conductance, the hydraulic conductance of the stem and root pathway, the hydraulic conductance of the canopy and the hydraulic conductance of each branch were estimated. Our findings show that the root conductance and the canopy hydraulic conductance are similar in magnitude. Leaf hydraulic conductance per leaf area unit was similar for each of the four branch orientations, indicating that, while the light microclimate has a dominant influence on transpiration, in this case it had little effect on the hydraulic properties of the canopy.

A field study was conducted to determine how atmospheric and edaphic conditions influenced the water relations of avocado trees (Persea americana Mill. cv. Bacon). With high and low levels of incident photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm wave length), and either wet or dry soil, leaf conductance decreased as the absolute humidity difference from leaf to air increased. For any water stress treatment, conductance was higher at high PAR than at low PAR. Both conductance and transpiration were higher in well-watered trees than in stressed trees, and in prestressed trees levels were intermediate to unstressed and stressed trees. A model for water flux through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum was used to examine the relationship of leaf xylem pressure potential to transpiration in well-watered trees and in trees stressed by dry soil. There was a close linkage between leaf xylem pressure potential and transpiration in unstressed and previously stressed trees with high or low PAR, i.e. similar potentials occurred with equivalent transpiration regardless of previous treatment or time of day. In stressed trees, xylem pressure potential was lower than in unstressed trees both during the day and night, and at a given transpiration rate the potential was lower after 1400 h than before that time. The model indicated that in stressed trees xylem pressure potential was uncoupled from transpiration, presumably because of altered resistance in the soil-root portion of the transport system.

Irrigation effects on whole-plant sap flow and leaf-level water relations were characterised throughout a growing season in an experimental olive (Olea europaea L.) orchard. Atmospheric evaporative demand and soil moisture conditions for irrigated and non-irrigated olive trees were also monitored. Whole-plant water use in field-grown irrigated and rain fed olive trees was determined using a xylem sap flow method (compensation heat-pulse velocity). Foliage gas exchange and water potentials were determined throughout the experimental period. Physiological parameters responded diurnally and seasonally to variations in tree water status, soil moisture conditions and atmospheric evaporative demand. There was a considerable degree of agreement between daily transpiration deduced from heat-pulse velocity and that determined by calibration using the Penman–Monteith equation in the field. Summer drought caused decreasing leaf gas exchange and water potentials, and a progressive increase in hydraulic conductance (stronger in non-irrigated than irrigated trees), probably attributable to modifications in hydraulic properties at the soil-root interface. Negligible hysteresis, attributable to low plant capacitance, was observed in the relationship between leaf water potential and sap flow. A proportional decrease in maximum daily leaf conductance with increasing vapour pressure deficit was observed, while mean daytime canopy stomatal conductance decreased with the season. As a result, plant water use was limited and excessive drought stress prevented. Non-irrigated olive trees recovered after the summer drought, showing a physiological behaviour similar to that of irrigated trees. In addition to physiological and environmental factors, there are endogenous keys (chemical signals) influencing leaf level parameters. Olive trees are confirmed to be economical and sparing users of soil water, with an efficient xylem sap transport, maintenance of significant gas exchange and transpiration, even during drought stress.
