Native and alien invasive plants: more of the same? 总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
We compare the ecological and habitat characteristics of alien and native vascular plants which have recently expanded in range m England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands In the great majority of respects, expanding aliens and natives are functionally indistinguishable However, there are a few consistent differences aliens are more likely than natives to be clonal, polycarpic perennials with erect, leafy stems, and to have transient seed banks We discuss these trends m the context of the difficulties faced by aliens in invading mostly closed plant communities in relatively cool, damp climates Our results are consistent with some predictions of the attributes of'ideal'invaders, but contradict others We argue that the ecological attributes of successful alien invaders are strongly habitat-dependent 相似文献

In this study we assessed the water transport strategies and the abundance of alien and native tree species at a regional scale in Córdoba Mountains, Central Argentina. The aims of this study were: (i) to analyse whether alien and native tree species show divergent water transport strategies; and (ii) to explore whether species abundances of alien and natives are associated with specific trait attributes. Eight alien species and 12 native species were recorded in 50 complete vascular plant vegetation relevés. Water transport strategies were assessed through the following functional traits: minimum leaf water potential, potential water content of wood, effective leaf area, leaf area per sapwood area and wood density. Also, resource use strategies were assessed throughout the measurement of specific leaf area. We found that alien species had a higher efficiency in water transport (i.e. higher minimum leaf water potential and lower wood density values) and faster resource acquisition and use (higher specific leaf area values) than native species. We did not find evidence suggesting that the relative abundance of species was associated to water transport strategies and faster resource acquisition and use. Alien species seem to differ from natives in specific functional attributes that are absent in the resident community and might allow aliens to use more resources and at a higher rate than native species. Finally, our results show the potential of a trait‐based predictive framework for alien species, and the possible effects on ecosystem functions. 相似文献

Invasive species can strongly affect biotic interactions in ecosystems, interacting both directly and indirectly with local species. In European tomato greenhouses, the invasive alien pest Tuta absoluta may impact the population dynamics of other pests like whiteflies. Besides inducing damages to the host plant and competing for resources with local pests, this alien species may exert a predator-mediated interaction on local pests sharing common natural enemies. Biocontrol agents usually used against whiteflies may also prey upon T. absoluta and this could alter the dynamics of local pest populations. We evaluated possible resource competition and predator-mediated interactions in a system involving one mirid predator Macrolophus pygmaeus and two pests, T. absoluta and a local whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, on greenhouse tomatoes. Results showed that both resource competition and predator-mediated interactions occurred simultaneously. In the presence of the shared predator, there was a short-term positive effect of T. absoluta on B. tabaci [up to 5.9-fold increase of B. tabaci juveniles (egg + larvae) after four weeks]. However, in the long-term there was a negative predator-mediated interaction of T. absoluta on B. tabaci, i.e., after ten weeks the density of B. tabaci was 7.3-fold lower in the presence of the invasive pest. We emphasize the critical role of generalist predators in managing both local and invasive alien pest populations and that the strength and direction of predator-mediated indirect interactions can depend on the time scale considered. 相似文献

Red shiners (Cyprinella lutrensis) are among the most widespread, ecologically general, and environmentally tolerant fish species in North America, and are
highly invasive where they have been introduced outside their native range. However, long-term data on fish assemblages showed
that red shiners gradually (1980s to 2006) disappeared from creeks that are direct tributaries of Lake Texoma (Oklahoma, USA)
where they are native and historically had been numerically dominant. Following a major flood in 2007, red shiners were detected
anew in some of these creeks, but repeatedly disappeared and re-appeared through November 2009. Given their invasive abilities
where they are not native, their failure to become re-established prompted us to examine factors that affect their apparent
inability to re-invade their native habitat. We established assemblages of five common fish taxa native to Brier Creek in
12 large, outdoor mesocosm stream units. Subsequently, we introduced red shiners at two densities of 10 or 30 per unit, six
replicates each, to examine potential effects of propagule pressure on establishment success. Approximately six months later,
we ended the experiment and recovered all fish. Red shiners failed to become established in the experimental units, regardless
of initial stocking density. They also exhibited much lower survival than other species in the native community, which not
only survived well but exhibited some recruitment. Red shiner survival was significantly negatively related to the number
of sunfish (Lepomis spp.) that grew to adult size in experimental units, suggesting that predation can inhibit early stages of invasion by red
shiners. 相似文献

Invasive alien species (IAS) constitute a major threat to global biological diversity. In order to control their spread, a detailed understanding of the factors influencing their distribution is essential. Although international trade is regarded as a major force structuring spatial patterns of IAS, the role of other social factors remains unclear. Despite studies highlighting the importance of strong governance in slowing drivers of biodiversity loss such as logging, deforestation, and agricultural intensification, no study has yet analyzed its contribution to the issue of IAS. Using estimates of governance quality and comprehensive spatiotemporal IAS data, we performed multiple linear regressions to investigate the effect of governance quality upon the distribution of species listed under “100 of the worst” IAS in 38 Eurasian countries as defined by DASIE. Our model suggested that for countries with higher GDP, stronger governance was associated with a greater number of the worst IAS; in contrast, for the lowest GDP countries under analysis, stronger governance was associated with fewer of these IAS. We elucidate how the quality of governance within a country has implications for trade, tourism, transport, legislation, and economic development, all of which influence the spread of IAS. While our findings support the common assumption that strengthening governance benefits conservation interventions in countries of smaller economy, we find that this effect is not universal. Stronger governance alone cannot adequately address the problem of IAS, and targeted action is required in relatively high‐GDP countries in order to stem the influx of IAS associated with high volumes of trade. 相似文献

Degraded reefs with a high abundance of macroalgae usually also have low densities of coral recruits. Few studies, however,
have examined whether these algae affect coral larval settlement. This study demonstrates, experimentally, that larvae of
the Caribbean coral Favia fragrum can settle on the green alga Halimeda opuntia even when another substrate more suitable for settlement is present. Larval settlement onto experimental substrates was quantified
under three treatments: rubble only, rubble plus plastic algal mimic, and rubble plus live H. opuntia. Similar total larval settlement was observed in all treatments. No larvae settled on the algal mimic, but total settlement
was similar on the rubble in the first two treatments, showing that the rubble alone offered sufficient substrate for high
settlement success. About half the larvae in the live algal treatment settled on H. opuntia instead of on the rubble, showing that larvae did not reject this substrate as they did the algal mimic. This result raises
the possibility that corals will settle on some macroalgae when their abundance is high. Most macroalgae, including H. opuntia, are ephemeral substrates unsuitable for post-settlement survival. Such unexpected settlement may therefore have significant
consequences for coral recruitment success on algal-dominated reefs. 相似文献

Biological invasions are ecologically and economically costly. Understanding the major mechanisms that contribute to an alien
species becoming invasive is seen as essential for limiting the effects of invasive alien species. However, there are a number
of fundamental questions that need addressing such as why some communities are more vulnerable to invasion than others and,
indeed, why some alien species become widespread and abundant. The enemy release hypothesis (ERH) is widely evoked to explain
the establishment and proliferation of an alien species. ERH predicts that an alien species introduced to a new region should
experience a decrease in regulation by natural enemies which will lead to an increase in the distribution and abundance of
the alien species. At the centre of this theory is the assumption that natural enemies are important regulators of populations.
Additionally, the theory implies that such natural enemies have a stronger regulatory effect on native species than they do
on alien species in the introduced range, and this disparity in enemy regulation results in increased population growth of
the alien species. However, empirical evidence for the role of the ERH in invasion success is lacking, particularly for invertebrates.
Many studies equate a reduction in the number of natural enemies associated with an alien species to release without studying
population effects. Further insight is required in relation to the effects of specific natural enemies on alien and native
species (particularly their ability to regulate populations). We review the role of ecological models in exploring ERH. We
suggest that recent developments in molecular technologies offer considerable promise for investigating ERH in a community
context. 相似文献

The last few centuries have seen an increase in the mean air temperature of the planet, a phenomenon that is called “global
warming”. One of the most sensitive habitats to the effects of global warming is the high-elevation mountain environments,
because these habitats are characterized by low temperature. Cushion plants are one of the best-adapted growth forms in this
habitat, generating more suitable sites for other plants and insects. In the present study, we experimentally evaluated the
effects of global warming by open-top chambers on the abundance and interaction of two ladybirds at 3,600 m, growing over
cushions of the Azorella monantha species in the Andes of central Chile. Additionally, we measured variation in temperature, water content, and food availability
by the presence of open-top chambers as possible mechanisms of spatial segregation between ladybirds. Without open-top chambers,
the abundance of native and alien beetles was similar; but with open-top chambers, the native beetle species is spatially
segregated by alien species, decreasing in abundance. The open-top chambers increase temperature and food availability, but
not water content. We suggest that under the global warming scenario, the native insects will decrease in abundance or become
extinct by the presence of alien insects, at least in the high-elevation mountain environments. 相似文献

Japan’s economy depends on the importation of natural resources, and as a result, Japan is subjected to a high risk of biological invasion. Although Japan has quarantine systems to protect ecosystems, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and human health against alien species, economic globalization has resulted in an ever-increasing risk of invasion. Mite invasion is no exception. Alien species that impact natural ecosystems are regulated in Japan by the Invasive Alien Species Act. However, the law focuses only on visibly recognizable species, so that species too small to see, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and mites, are beyond the scope of this law. The Plant Protection Law has limited the introduction of alien pests, including mites, that are harmful to agricultural crops. Recently, the liberalization of global trade policies have increased pressure to loosen regulations on various pests, including spider mites. Infectious diseases and their causative species are quarantined under the Rabies Prevention Law, the Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control Law, and the Human Infectious Diseases Control Law, but these laws do not cover wildlife diseases. The most serious problem is that wild reptiles, which can be carriers of ticks and tick-borne diseases, can be freely introduced to Japan. These loopholes in Japan’s regulatory system have resulted in mite and tick invasions, which affect not only wildlife communities and human society but also endemism and biological diversity of natural mite populations. 相似文献

The plasticity of climate-growth relationships of trees is one of the main factors determining the climate-induced changes in forest productivity and composition. In this study, high-frequency variation of tree-ring width (TRW) of four native and three alien tree species and two hybrids of Populus L. growing in Latvia (hemiboreal zone) was compared using a principal component analysis based on TRW indices for the period 1965–2009. The effect of climatic factors was assessed using a bootstrapped correlation analysis. Influence of common climatic factors related to the length of the vegetation season, winter temperature, and water regime in summer was traced in the TRW of the studied species and hybrids. The combination and effect of the identified factors differed by species (and hybrids), to a certain extent explaining the diversity of TRW patterns. Nevertheless, some similarities among the species were also observed, suggesting the plasticity of growth response. Scots pine was generally sensitive to winter temperatures, but Norway spruce was mainly sensitive to summer water regime, while black alder was sensitive to winter temperatures and precipitation in spring. In contrast, silver birch showed the lowest sensitivity to the tested climatic factors (demonstrating sensitivity to winter precipitation in a few sites), suggesting tolerance to weather fluctuations. The TRW of the alien species was primarily sensitive to climatic factors related to water regime in the summer of the year preceding the formation of tree-ring, implying differences in mechanisms regulating wood increment. Nevertheless, temperature in the dormant period was significant for European larch in a few sites, suggesting sensitivity to cold damage. The variation of TRW of Populus hybrids diverged from others, as their growth was negatively correlated with the temperature in autumn, spring, and summer and positively correlated with water balance. Although the annual water balance in Latvia is positive, the effect of water deficit on tree growth was apparent. 相似文献

Frequently, female plants allocate more resources to reproductive structures and defense-related secondary compounds in comparison with male plants that invest more resources to growth, reflecting trade-offs between reproduction, growth and defense. Therefore, differences in herbivory can be expected between genders. In this study, over two years, we analyzed the differences in plant chemical defense, nutritional quality, plant size and herbivory between genders in the dioecious tree, Spondias purpurea in a Mexican tropical dry forest. We estimated the total leaf area and the area consumed by folivory using a digital image of each leaf. The nutritional quality was estimated as water content, and the concentration of chlorophyll and total nonstructural carbohydrates. The secondary metabolites analyzed were total content of soluble phenolics, flavonoids, protein precipitation capacity of tannins, gallotannins, soluble proanthocyanidins, hydrolyzable tannins and ellagitannins. Our results differ from most of studies that analyze the differential herbivory patterns in dioecious plants. We found that female trees had higher levels of herbivory than male trees of S. purpurea. In the same way, female trees showed higher size and nutritional quality than males, while chemical defense was higher in male trees. The higher percentage of folivory in female trees of S. purpurea is associated with greater nutritional quality and lower chemical defenses. Our results show that male-biased herbivory might not be universal in dioecious species. Therefore, studies of fitness components affected by herbivory are necessary to understand the evolution of dioecy and the importance of herbivores as selective agents on breeding system features. 相似文献

The main objective was to discover extent of interference and/or exploitative competition between the native red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the introduced, invasive raccoon dog (Nyctereues proconoides) in the intensively used, agricultural landscape of northeast Germany (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) using very high frequency (VHF) radio telemetry. We recorded location data for 12 foxes and 16 raccoon dogs between July 2004 and December 2006. Species had similar average home range sizes estimated in each season (K95). Home ranges of adjacent raccoon dogs and foxes overlapped from 0.5 to 74.5 % with a mean of 26.4 %. We found a significantly different home range overlap index between the species showing that raccoon dog ranges shifted between seasons to a greater extent than red fox ranges. The raccoon dog differed significantly from the red fox in its use of habitat types, preferring dense vegetation cover and avoiding open areas. The red fox displayed less preference for or avoidance of specific habitat types. Moreover, an almost neutral inter-specific interaction index ranging from ?0.12 to 0.12 indicates that raccoon dogs and red foxes ignored each other. It is concluded that widespread and available resources and differences in spatial use patterns prevent competition between red foxes and raccoon dogs in the agricultural landscape of northeast Germany. 相似文献

Anthropogenic changes to habitat are a global phenomenon and the impact of these changes may act in tandem to cause loss of
biodiversity. One major global change is the introduction of invasive species. In order to determine whether other human impacts
might correlate with populations of invaders, we examined the habitat correlates of distribution, persistence and reproduction
of a global invader, the American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana). We then compared these correlates with those of a threatened, native congener, the California red-legged frog (Rana draytonii). We found striking differences between the two species in response to habitat fragmentation and degradation. Our work suggests
that human alteration of habitat, in particular the hydrology of freshwater sites and through building roads, favors this
invasive species across the landscape. 相似文献

Introduced species often pose serious threats to biodiversity, but occasionally confusion arises as to whether a species really is introduced or is in fact an overlooked native. A recent UK conservation dilemma has centred on the status of the pool frog Rana lessonae. This species has been the subject of documented introductions from central and southern Europe since the early 1800s, the accepted position being that all UK R. lessonae populations are descended from these introductions. However, a closer examination of early UK literature sources, and recent discoveries of isolated, native R. lessonae populations in Sweden and Norway, led some herpetologists to question whether the species was in fact present as a native at some locations prior to the introductions. Research was initiated along four major lines of enquiry: genetic, bioacoustic, archaeozoological and archival. A high degree of convergence among the genetic and bioacoustic investigations demonstrated that the potentially native UK pool frogs were closely related to Scandinavian frogs, thus ruling out introductions from further south as a potential origin. Subfossil evidence of pool frogs was found from ca. 1000 years before present, demonstrating that the species occurred in the UK prior to known introductions. Archival sources produced no historical support for introductions from northern Europe. The postglacial history inferred for these northern populations is consistent with the known climatic and geographical conditions. Taken together, the evidence for the native status of the pool frog is compelling, and furthermore the UK population appears to be part of a distinct northern clade. 相似文献
