  • Pollen and stigma size have the potential to influence male fitness of hermaphroditic plants, particularly in species presenting floral polymorphisms characterised by marked differences in these traits among floral morphs. In this study, we take advantage of the evolutionary transition from tristyly to distyly experienced by Oxalis alpina (Oxalidaceae), and examined whether modifications in the ancillary traits (pollen and stigma size) respond to allometric changes in other floral traits. Also, we tested whether these modifications are in accordance with what would be expected under the hypothesis that novel competitive scenarios (as in distylous‐derived reproductive system) exert morph‐ and whorl‐specific selective pressures to match the available stigmas.
  • We measure pollen and stigma size in five populations of O. alpina representing the tristyly–distyly transition.
  • A general reduction in pollen and stigma size occurred along the tristyly–distyly transition, and pollen size from the two anther levels within each morph converged to a similar size that was characterised by whorl‐specific changes (increases or decreases) in pollen size of different anthers in each floral type.
  • Overall, results from this study show that the evolution of distyly in this species is characterised not only by changes in sexual organ position and flower size, but also by morph‐specific changes in pollen and stigma size. This evidence supports the importance of selection on pollen and stigma size, which increase fitness of remaining morphs following the evolution of distyly, and raises questions to explore on the functional value of pollen size in heterostylous systems under pollen competition.

We investigated the role of morph‐based differences in the expression of inbreeding depression in loss of the mid‐styled morph from populations of tristylous Oxalis alpina. The extent of self‐compatibility (SC) of reproductive morphs, the degree of self‐fertilization, and the magnitude of inbreeding depression were investigated in three populations of O. alpina differing in their tristylous incompatibility relationships. All three populations exhibited significant inbreeding depression. In two populations with highly modified tristylous incompatibility, manifested as increased reciprocal compatibility between short‐ and long‐styled morphs, substantial SC and self‐fertilization of mid‐styled morphs were detected, and expected to result in expression of inbreeding depression in the progeny of mid‐styled morphs in the natural populations. In contrast, significant self‐fertility of the mid‐styled morph was absent from the population with typical tristylous incompatibility, and no self‐fertilization could be detected. Although self‐fertilization and expression of inbreeding depression should result in selection against the mid‐styled morph in the later stages of the transition from tristyly to distyly, in O. alpina selection against the mid‐styled morph in the early phases of the evolution of distyly is likely due to genic selection against mid‐alleles associated with modified tristylous incompatibility, rather than expression of inbreeding depression.  相似文献

Historical factors such as climatic oscillations during the Pleistocene epoch have dramatically impacted species distributions. Studies of the patterns of genetic structure in angiosperm species using molecular markers with different modes of inheritance contribute to a better understanding of potential differences in colonization and patterns of gene flow via pollen and seeds. These markers may also provide insights into the evolution of reproductive systems in plants. Oxalis alpina is a tetraploid, herbaceous species inhabiting the Sky Island region of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Our main objective in this study was to analyze the influence of climatic oscillations on the genetic structure of O. alpina and the impact of these oscillations on the evolutionary transition from tristylous to distylous reproductive systems. We used microsatellite markers and compared our results to a previous study using chloroplast genetic markers. The phylogeographic structure inferred by both markers was different, suggesting that intrinsic characteristics including the pollination system and seed dispersal have influenced patterns of gene flow. Microsatellites exhibited low genetic structure, showed no significant association between geographic and genetic distances, and all individual genotypes were assigned to two main groups. In contrast, chloroplast markers exhibited a strong association between geographic and genetic distance, had higher levels of genetic differentiation, and were assigned to five groups. Both types of DNA markers showed evidence of a northward expansion as a consequence of climate warming occurring in the last 10,000 years. The data from both types of markers support the hypothesis for several independent transitions from tristyly to distyly.  相似文献

The evolution of distyly from tristyly was investigated in populations of Oxalis alpina at high elevations throughout the Sky Islands of the Sonoran Desert. Incompatibility systems in tristylous populations, where self-incompatible short-, mid-, and long-styled morphs occur in populations, vary from those typical of tristylous species in which each morph is equally capable of fertilizing ovules of the other two morphs, to breeding systems in which incompatibility relationships are asymmetric. In these populations, selection against the allele controlling expression of the mid-styled morph is likely. The degree of modification of incompatibility in the short- and long-styled morphs in 10 populations was strongly associated with fewer mid-styled morphs, supporting models predicting the effect of these modifications of incompatibility on frequency of the mid-styled morph. Self-compatibility of the mid-styled morph may be important for maintaining the frequency of this morph, depending on the level of self-pollination, self-fertilization, and the extent of inbreeding depression. Modifications of incompatibility in tristylous populations and the distribution of distylous populations of O. alpina in the Sky Island region have similar geographic components, indicating the potential importance of historical factors in the evolution of distyly from tristyly.  相似文献

The evolution of distyly from tristyly has occurred repeatedly, especially in the Lythraceae. However, the evolutionary forces involved remain unclear since species exhibiting transitional stages between tristyly and distyly have rarely been studied. The self-compatible, wetland perennial Decodon verticillatus (Lythraceae) may provide this transitional variation since populations commonly lack style morphs, particularly the mid-styled (M) morph. In dimorphic populations lacking the M morph, anthers positioned at the mid level in both the long- (L) and short-styled (S) morphs have lost their target stigma, setting the stage for either evolutionary repositioning of mid-level anthers to increase pollen export to L and S stigmas, or increased variability in mid-level anther position resulting from relaxed selection. We examined these two hypotheses by comparing floral morphology in eight dimorphic and ten trimorphic populations from throughout the species’ range. We found no evidence that loss of the M morph has led to evolutionary modification of mid-level stamens. While mid-level stamens of the S morph were 11.0 ± 4.0% (mean ± 1 SE) longer than those of the L morph in dimorphic populations, divergence in stamen length between morphs occurred to the same extent (10.4 ± 2.0%) in trimorphic populations and cannot be attributed to the absence of the M morph. Analyses of variability using median ratio tests revealed no difference in the variability of mid-level stamen length between dimorphic and trimorphic populations. Mid-level stamens were not more variable than long- and short-level stamens within dimorphic populations. The consistent divergence in mid-level stamens between the L and S morphs may reflect morph-specific differences in the optimal position of mid-level anthers for maximizing cross-pollination and avoiding self-fertilization.  相似文献

Genetic models and computer simulations suggest that modifications of incompatibility in tristylous populations of Oxalis alpina from southeastern Arizona should result in evolution of distyly, due to the inability of the mid floral morph to compete effectively with the short and long floral morphs. To evaluate this hypothesis, progeny testing of naturally pollinated individuals was carried out over a three-year period for populations with differing mid frequencies. In contrast to expectations, mids appeared in greater than expected proportions in many cases. Detailed analysis of results from two trimorphic populations where the mid form is relatively uncommon revealed that mid morphs produced far more mid progeny among their offspring than expected. Assuming that all compatible pollen has the same probability of deposition on appropriate stigmas, mid excesses were found among progeny of shorts and longs in these populations as well. In a third population where the mid form is abundant, mid excesses were not found among the progeny of mids, nor were mid excesses typical among the progeny of shorts and longs. Mid excesses among progeny of populations where the mid form is uncommon may explain retention of this form, despite incompatibility modifications that should favor evolution of distyly. Over-representation of mids may result from gametophytic selection favoring mid alleles. If this is the case, tristylous populations may be in equilibrium, with the frequencies of the three morphs determined by the balance of the opposing selective forces resulting from incompatibility modifications and gametophytic selection.  相似文献

Heterostyly is a genetic polymorphism in which plant populations possess two (distyly) or three (tristyly) morphs with flowers differing reciprocally in stigma and anther height. Sex organ deployment has been described as being highly variable among and within species of several distylous taxa belonging to different taxonomic groups. However, the number of studies considering within‐species disparities is still limited. For a better overview of the existing amount of variation that can occur within and between heterostylous species, we sampled 46 populations of six Melochia spp., a style‐polymorphic genus in Cuba. We characterized the floral morphology in all populations and described a set of ancillary characters per species. All of these Melochia spp. are distylous, except for the monomorphic M. nodiflora. The S‐morph produces fewer, larger pollen than L‐morphs, and has verrucose ornamentation. The L‐morph produces reticulate pollen and has larger stigmatic papillae than the S‐morph. The monomorphic M. nodiflora shows ancillary characteristics that are similar to the L‐morph individuals in the related species. As expected, there are differences in ancillary characters among species and also dissimilarities in reciprocity among and within species of Melochia. Our results highlight the importance of considering intraspecific variation in the morphometric characterization of heterostylous taxa. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 176 , 147–158.  相似文献

Summary The frequencies of floral morphs in populations of tristylous Eichhornia paniculata often deviate from the theoretical expectation of equality. This variation is associated with the breakdown of tristyly and the evolution of self-fertilization. Differences in morph frequencies could result from selection pressures due to variable levels of insect visitation to populations and contrasting foraging behavior among the floral morphs. We estimated pollinator densities in 16 populations and quantified visitation sequences to morphs in five populations of E. paniculata in northeastern Brazil. Foraging behavior among floral morphs was measured as the frequency of visits to morphs relative to their frequency in the population (preference) and number of flights between inflorescences of the same versus different morphs (constancy). Pollinator density (number/m2/minute) was not correlated with population size, plant density or morph diversity. Pollinator densities varied most among populations of less than 200 plants. Whether pollinators discriminated among the morphs, depended on whether they primarily collected nectar or pollen. In four populations, nectar-feeding bees (Ancyloscelis and Florilegus spp.) and butterflies showed no consistent preference or constancy among the morphs. In contrast, pollen-collecting bees (Trigona sp.) visited a lower proportion of longstyled inflorescences than expected and tended to visit more mid-and short-styled inflorescences in succession, once they were encountered. Pollinator constancy for morphs did not result from differences in inflorescence production or spatial patchiness among the morphs. Although non-random pollinator visitation to morphs in heterostylous populations could potentially affect mating and hence morph frequencies, the observed visitation patterns in this study do not provide evidence that pollinators play a major role in influencing floral morph frequencies.  相似文献

Tristyly is a rare floral polymorphism known to occur in only five flowering plant families. One unresolved and potential additional case of tristyly concerns the genus Hugonia in the Linaceae. Here we confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus by reporting floral measurements made on Hugonia serrata Lam., an extremely rare species endemic to the Mascarene Islands of La Réunion and Mauritius in the southern Indian Ocean. We conducted an extensive search of all natural habitats on La Réunion Island where the species had been previously reported. Twenty-eight individuals were found, of which nine were in flower. Of the nine flowering individuals five had long-styled flowers with the stigmas placed above the two levels of anthers, three had intermediate length styles with the stigmas placed between the two anther levels, and one had stigmas placed below the two anther levels, i.e., three floral morphs could be identified based on the sequence of stigma and anther positions. Reciprocity and precision indices calculated for sexual organ length in each morph confirm that this variation is well within the range of values observed by previous workers on other tristylous species in other families. Our empirical data confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus Hugonia, thereby raising the number of known families in which tristyly occurs to six. Pollen size, pollen number, and anther length increased slightly with stamen length, but the low number of plants precludes statistical tests of these trends. A bibliographic survey suggests that tristyly may occur in several other species of the genus.  相似文献

Summary Pontederia cordata L. (Pontederiaceae), a perennial diploid, possesses the rare genetic polymorphism tristyly. A controlled pollination programme was conducted over a three year period, under glasshouse conditions, on 36 clones of P. cordata var. cordata to examine the nature of the self-incompatibility system. The three major findings of the pollination study were: (1) the three floral morphs display different levels of self-incompatibility, (2) pollen from the two anther levels within a flower exhibits different compatibility behaviour in self-pollinations, (3) considerable individual genetic variation in the expression of self-incompatibility is evident among clones within floral morphs. Similar results were also obtained from a smaller study on 15 clones of P. cordata var. lancifolia conducted over a 6 month period. In common with other Pontederia species the mid-styled morph (M) of P. cordata produces large amounts of seed when self-pollinated with pollen from long-level anthers. A developmental model is proposed to explain the high level of self-compatibility of the M morph in Pontederia species. Self-pollination of segregating progenies from M and S morphs of known incompatibility status demonstrated that the expression of incompatibility is closely associated with style length. It is suggested that overall differences in incompatibility behaviour among the floral morphs may be due to the pleiotropic effects of major genes controlling sub-characters of the tristylous syndrome, rather than linked modifier genes. However, the variable expression of trimorphic incompatibility within floral morphs suggests that this variation may be polygenic in origin.

Oxalis squamata is a perennial endemic herb of the Chilean-Argentine Andes previously reported as a distylous species. In this paper, analysis of floral morphology, incompatibility relations and population structure show that O. squamata possesses morphological and functional tristyly. The three floral morphs differ in calyx and corolla length, style and stamen length, pollen grain size and stylar pubescence. Results of hand pollinations showed the presence of a strong incompatibility system. Legitimate pollinations with the L and M morphs as seed parents produced approximately equal numbers of seeds per pollination. The S morph produced less than half the number of seeds per legitimate pollination compared to the other two morphs. Intra- and intermorph illegitimate pollinations produce almost no seeds. Morph representation in the population was isoplethic. Fruit and seed production did not differ significantly for the three morphs in the population. Comparison of experimental and natural production of fruits and seeds suggests that seed set in the natural population may be pollen-limited for the L and M morphs.  相似文献

The process of adaptation can be highly dependent upon historical and contemporary factors, especially in environmentally and topographically complex regions affected by Pleistocene glaciations. Here, we investigate Hilaria jamesii (Poaceae), a dryland C4 graminoid, to test how patterns of adaptive genetic variation are linked to its glacial and post-glacial history. We show that the species persisted in a single, southern refugium during the last glacial period and subsequently migrated throughout its current distribution concurrent with post-glacial warming. The species’ putative adaptive genetic variation correlates with climatic gradients (e.g. monsoon precipitation and mean diurnal temperature range) that covary with the species’ probable route of demographic expansion. The short timescale and multiple climatic dimensions of adaptation imply that natural selection acted primarily upon standing genetic variation. These findings suggest that restoration and conservation practices should prioritize the maintenance of standing genetic variation to ensure that species have the capacity to respond to future environmental changes.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluate phylogeographic patterns and predictions of ecological niche modelling (ENM) for Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae), a widely distributed taxon in the Atlantic forest domain, to understand the effect of past climatic oscillations on the demographic history of this species. An analysis of phylogeographic population structure and demography was conducted on E. uniflora from 46 localities in natural environments across the distribution range of the species based on three plastid markers. ENM was also performed to predict suitable environments and areas of dramatic decrease in future suitability for the species under distinct representative concentration pathways (RCPs). Eugenia uniflora exhibited higher haplotype and nucleotide diversity in the southern part of its distribution than in the northern part. Two divergent lineages were revealed in the phylogenetic analysis of haplotypes, with an estimated divergence at c. 4.9 Mya. The populations in the northern and central regions of the range probably experienced population growth, whereas populations in the southern region are marked by historical demographic stability. ENM results indicate that the distribution of E. uniflora was fragmented in cool periods and was broader and more connected during warm periods during Pleistocene. The results suggest distinct evolutionary histories in southern to northern populations, indicating region‐specific responses to changes.  相似文献

A survey of haploid chromosome numbers of 18 North American taxa of Oxalis section Ionoxalis was initiated to determine the relationship between ploidal level, geographic distribution, and the occurrence of tristyly and distyly. Although chromosome numbers in the section are variable, the majority of tristylous populations are diploid. Among the distylous taxa a greater diversity of ploidal levels exists, with the higher chromosome numbers predominating. In section Ionoxalis the majority of the tristylous taxa are geographically restricted endemics of southern Mexico, while the distylous taxa have more extensive distributions ranging to the north. The association of diploidy and geographic endemism in the majority of the tristylous taxa suggests that these species are relictual. A few widespread tristylous taxa are polyploid, and often somewhat weedy. The probable derivation of widespread polyploid species from the restricted diploid endemics of southern Mexico appears to have been accompanied by the evolution of distyly from tristyly. The frequent association of polyploidy and distyly in section Ionoxalis has apparently resulted from the concurrence of two evolutionary trends: increase in ploidal level and the derivation of distyly from tristyly.  相似文献

In south-eastern Arizona, heterostylous (often trimorphic) populations of Oxalis alpina (Rose) Knuth are visited most commonly by females of the solitary bee Heterosarus bakeri Cockerell. Bees collect pollen from flowers and are presumed to be the major pollinators of O. alpina in this region. Analysis of pollen loads from the corbiculae of H. bakeri suggests that individual bees may specialize temporally on different floral forms. However, the apparent preferential collection of pollen probably results from spatial segregation of morphs and the localized foraging behaviour of bees rather than preference on the part of individual bees for particular stylar forms. As a group, bees appear to visit floral morphs of O. alpina indiscriminately, even though individual bees may have a preponderance of pollen from one morph type. Despite spatial segregation leading to pollinator flights between members of the same incompatibility group, capsule and seed production in populations of O. alpina is high for all forms. Loss of the mid form in some populations cannot be attributed to pollinator preferences for individual style morphs.  相似文献

Determining the factors promoting speciation is a major task in ecological and evolutionary research and can be aided by phylogeographic analysis. The Qinling–Daba Mountains (QDM) located in central China form an important geographic barrier between southern subtropical and northern temperate regions, and exhibit complex topography, climatic, and ecological diversity. Surprisingly, few phylogeographic analyses and studies of plant speciation in this region have been conducted. To address this issue, we investigated the genetic divergence and evolutionary histories of three closely related tree peony species (Paeonia qiui, P. jishanensis, and P. rockii) endemic to the QDM. Forty populations of the three tree peony species were genotyped using 22 nuclear simple sequence repeat markers (nSSRs) and three chloroplast DNA sequences to assess genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships, supplemented by morphological characterization and ecological niche modeling (ENM). Morphological and molecular genetic analyses showed the three species to be clearly differentiated from each other. In addition, coalescent analyses using DIYABC conducted on nSSR variation indicated that the species diverged from each other in the late Pleistocene, while ecological niche modeling (ENM) suggested they occupied a larger area during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) than at present. The combined genetic evidence from nuclear and chloroplast DNA and the results of ENM indicate that each species persisted through the late Pleistocene in multiple refugia in the Qinling, Daba, and Taihang Mountains with divergence favored by restricted gene flow caused by geographic isolation, ecological divergence, and limited pollen and seed dispersal. Our study contributes to a growing understanding of the origin and population structure of tree peonies and provides insights into the high level of plant endemism present in the Qinling–Daba Mountains of Central China.  相似文献

Both deterministic and stochastic forces determine the representation and frequency of floral morphs in heterostylous plant populations. Phylogeographic analysis of molecular variation can provide information on the role of historical factors, including founder events, in affecting population morph structure. Here, we investigate geographical patterns of floral morph variation in a distylous shrub Luculia pinceana (Rubiaceae) by examining the relations between floral polymorphism and molecular (cpDNA and microsatellite) variation in 25 populations sampled throughout the distribution of the species in southwest China and adjacent countries. In 19 of the 25 populations, the frequency of floral morphs was not significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio. The remaining populations were either L‐morph biased (2) or monomorphic (4) for this form and were morphologically differentiated from the remaining populations in several floral traits, that is, corolla tube length, sex organ position and stigma‐anther separation. Phylogeographic analysis supports the hypothesis that L. pinceana was initially split into west‐central and eastern lineages in the Early Pleistocene (~1.982 Mya). A centrally located lineage composed of morph‐biased and monomorphic populations appears to have been subsequently derived from the west‐central lineage, perhaps by a founder event after the last glacial maximum. Hypotheses to explain why these populations have not returned to equilibrium morph frequencies are considered.  相似文献

Stigmatic pollen loads were examined in four tristylous populations of Pontederia cordata from the southern U.S. to evaluate Darwin's hypothesis that floral trimorphism promotes legitimate pollination. In each population, morph frequency, pollen production, the composition of stigmatic pollen loads and seed production were estimated. Goodness-of-fit tests and a measure of the efficiency of legitimate pollination were employed to evaluate pollen load patterns. Results from the four populations demonstrate that the long-styled (L) morph usually experiences legitimate pollination, whereas the mid-styled (M) and short-styled (S) morphs often display random pollination. However, at Taylor Road (Louisiana) all three floral morphs exhibited statistically significant levels of legitimate pollination. The size of legitimate pollen loads suggests that in populations of P. cordata tristyly may have only a minor influence on the fecundity of morphs. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the maintenance of floral trimorphism in contemporary populations of Pontederia spp. The first assumes the polymorphism is selectively neutral; the second suggests that it contributes towards the male component of fitness by increasing the distance, and hence the number of genets, that pollen can be transported to by pollinators. In clonal species, such as Pontederia cordata, where geitonogamous pollinations are promoted by large floral displays, floral mechanisms that increase pollen carryover may have selective value.  相似文献

This study investigated the Pleistocene history of a semi‐aquatic bug, Microvelia douglasi douglasi Scott, 1874 (Hemiptera: Veliidae) in East Asia. We used M. douglasi douglasi as a model species to explore the effects of historical climatic fluctuations on montane semi‐aquatic invertebrate species. Two hypotheses were developed using ecological niche models (ENMs). First, we hypothesized that M. douglasi douglasi persisted in suitable habitats in southern Guizhou, southern Yunnan, Hainan, Taiwan and southeast China during the LIG. After that, the populations expanded (Hypothesis 1). As the spatial prediction in the LGM was significantly larger than in the LIG, we then hypothesized that the population expanded during the LIG to LGM transition (Hypothesis 2). We tested these hypotheses using mitochondrial data (COI+COII) and nuclear data (ITS1 + 5.8S+ITS2). Young lineages, relatively deep splits, lineage differentiation among mountain ranges in central, south and southwest China and high genetic diversities were observed in these suitable habitats. Evidence of mismatch distributions and neutrality tests indicate that a population expansion occurred in the late Pleistocene. The Bayesian skyline plot (BSP) revealed an unusual population expansion that likely happened during the cooling transition between LIG and LGM. The results of genetic data were mostly consistent with the spatial predictions from ENM, a finding that can profoundly improve phylogeographic research. The ecological requirements of M. douglasi douglasi, together with the geographical heterogeneity and climatic fluctuations of Pleistocene in East Asia, could have shaped this unusual demographic history. Our study contributes to our knowledge of semi‐aquatic bug/invertebrate responses to Pleistocene climatic fluctuations in East Asia.  相似文献
