The preference–performance hypothesis predicts that female insects maximize their fitness by utilizing host plants which are associated with high larval performance. Still, studies with several insect species have failed to find a positive correlation between oviposition preference and larval performance. In the present study, we experimentally investigated the relationship between oviposition preferences and larval performance in the butterfly Anthocharis cardamines. Preferences were assessed using both cage experiments and field data on the proportion of host plant individuals utilized in natural populations. Larval performance was experimentally investigated using larvae descending from 419 oviposition events by 21 females on plants from 51 populations of two ploidy types of the perennial herb Cardamine pratensis. Neither ploidy type nor population identity influenced egg survival or larval development, but increased plant inflorescence size resulted in a larger final larval size. There was no correlation between female oviposition preference and egg survival or larval development under controlled conditions. Moreover, variation in larval performance among populations under controlled conditions was not correlated with the proportion of host plants utilized in the field. Lastly, first instar larvae added to plants rejected for oviposition by butterfly females during the preference experiment performed equally well as larvae growing on plants chosen for oviposition. The lack of a correlation between larval performance and oviposition preference for A. cardamines under both experimental and natural settings suggests that female host choice does not maximize the fitness of the individual offspring.  相似文献

  • 1 The risk posed to New Zealand native flora by the recently‐established pest of Australian origin Uraba lugens Walker (Lepidoptera: Nolidae) (gum leaf skeletonizer) was assessed. Weed biological control host range testing methods were applied to identify those New Zealand plant species potentially at risk. Native plants tested were primarily in the Myrtaceae, the family that contains all the Australian hosts of U. lugens.
  • 2 Experimental methods included no‐choice larval feeding assays and field cage and laboratory oviposition trials. Difficulty in ascertaining reliable oviposition preference data from cage oviposition trials limited the confidence with which the invader's field host range could be predicted.
  • 3 Field surveys of plants attacked by U. lugens in the infested area supported the initial predictions but only some of the at‐risk native Myrtaceae were present in the area.
  • 4 The risk to native New Zealand plants is presented in terms of two mechanisms: development of self‐sustaining populations and temporary spill‐over of solitary larvae. Development of self‐sustaining populations of the pest within native forests is deemed to be highly improbable.
  • 5 Temporary spill‐over impacts are most likely in urban areas within mixed species plantings or boundaries between native/exotic forests and coinciding with the mobile larval life stages. Spill‐over impacts from U. lugens have only been recorded to date on Metrosideros excelsa.

Sweet potato virus disease (SPVD), the most harmful disease of sweet potatoes in East Africa, is caused by mixed infection with sweet potato feathery mottle potyvirus (SPFMV) and sweet potato chlorotic stunt crinivirus (SPCSV). Wild Ipomoea spp. native to East Africa (J cairica, I. hildebrandtii, I. involucra and J wightii) were graft-inoculated with SPVD-affected sweet potato scions. Inoculated plants were monitored for symptom development and tested for SPFMV and SPCSV by grafting to the indicator plant J setosa, and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Virus-free scions of sweet potato cv. Jersey were grafted onto these wild Ipomoea spp. in the field, and scions collected 3 wk later were rooted in the greenhouse and tested for viruses using serological tests and bioassays. In all virus tests, J cairica and J involucra were not infected with either SPFMV or SPCSV. J wightii was infected with SPFMV, but not SPCSV, in the field and following experimental inoculation; J hildebrandtii was infected with SPCSV, but not SPFMV, following experimental inoculation. These data provide the first evidence of East African wild Ipomoea germplasm resistant to the viruses causing SPVD.  相似文献

  • Genome size evolution and its relationship with pollen grain size has been investigated in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), an economically important crop which is closely related to diploid and tetraploid species, assessing the nuclear DNA content of 22 accessions from five Ipomoea species, ten sweet potato varieties and two outgroup taxa.
  • Nuclear DNA amounts were determined using flow cytometry. Pollen grains were studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy.
  • 2C DNA content of hexaploid I. batatas ranged between 3.12–3.29 pg; the mean monoploid genome size being 0.539 pg (527 Mbp), similar to the related diploid accessions. In tetraploid species I. trifida and I. tabascana, 2C DNA content was, respectively, 2.07 and 2.03 pg. In the diploid species closely related to sweet potato e.g. I. ×leucantha, I. tiliacea, I. trifida and I. triloba, 2C DNA content was 1.01–1.12 pg. However, two diploid outgroup species, I. setosa and I. purpurea, were clearly different from the other diploid species, with 2C of 1.47–1.49 pg; they also have larger chromosomes. The I. batatas genome presents 60.0% AT bases.
  • DNA content and ploidy level were positively correlated within this complex. In I. batatas and the more closely related species I. trifida, the genome size and ploidy levels were correlated with pollen size. Our results allow us to propose alternative or complementary hypotheses to that currently proposed for the formation of hexaploid Ipomoea batatas.

This study examined the effects of increased leaf nitrogen in natural host-plants (Plantago spp.) on female oviposition preference, larval performance, and larval chemical defense of the butterfly Junonia coenia. Increased availability of soil nutrients caused the host-plant’s foliar nitrogen to increase and its chemical defense to decrease. Larval performance did not correlate with increases in foliar nitrogen. Larval growth rate and survival were equivalent across host-plant treatments. However, larvae raised on fertilized host-plants showed concomitant decreases in chemical defense as compared to larvae reared on unfertilized host-plants. Since most butterfly larvae cannot move long distances during their first few instars and are forced to feed upon the plant on which they hatched, J. coenia larval chemical defense is determined, in large part, by female oviposition choice. Female butterflies preferred host-plants with high nitrogen over host-plants with low nitrogen; however, this preference was also mediated by plant chemical defense. Female butterflies preferred more chemically defended host-plants when foliar nitrogen was equivalent between host-plants. J. coenia larvae experience intense predation in the field, especially when larvae are not chemically well defended. Any qualitative or quantitative variation in plant allelochemical defense has fitness consequences on these larvae. Thus, these results indicate that females may be making sub-optimal oviposition decisions under a nutrient-enriched regime, when predators are present. Given the recent increase in fertilizer application and nitrogen deposition on the terrestrial landscape, these interactions between female preference, larval performance, and larval chemical defense may result in long-term changes in population dynamics and persistence of specialist insects.  相似文献

为探究华南地区严重入侵植物五爪金龙(Ipomoea cairica)生物入侵的分子机制,对五爪金龙及其近缘种七爪金龙(I. digitata)和裂叶牵牛(I. nil)进行de novo转录组测序和组装,得到56551条unigenes,其中56522条得到注释,7815条GO注释,15615条COG注释,180201条KEGG数据库注释。转录组分析结果表明,五爪金龙氮代谢通路关键酶基因的表达高于对照。次生代谢关键酶(PAL、4CL、CAD、查耳酮合酶、苯基丙乙烯酮异构酶、槲皮黄3-O-甲基转移酶等)基因在五爪金龙与七爪金龙及裂叶牵牛中均得到协同性的差异表达,而这些代谢通路指导的产物合成对五爪金龙的抗逆境能力、生长、化感作用等均起关键作用。关键基因的RT-qPCR验证结果与转录组结果具有一致性。因此,这从分子生物学层面上对解释五爪金龙在华南地区的入侵机制提供了新的证据。  相似文献

Glaucopsyche lygdamus egg densities were surveyed over a 2000-m section of Gold Creek and at 30 different isolated patches in the Gold Basin drainage in Colorado. Host plant numbers and diversity were quantified, as well as other variables potentially influencing butterfly population size, such as patch size and isolation. Egg densities correlated significantly only with measures of host species diversity. Patches consisting of a single host species, no matter how large, did not support high butterfly densities, but patches of multiple, equitably distributed host species did. The most likely explantation, in light of oviposition preference and larval performance data accumulated for this butterfly species, is that host species diversity is necessary for the persistence ofG. lygdamus populations, because alternative host species buffer population losses during poor or unusual years. The dependence of both ovipositing butterflies and developing larvae on the ephemeral, young, host plant flowers make the butterfly especially vulnerable to year-to-year variation in host plant availability and quality.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to asymmetrically fuse protoplasts from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) and its wild relativesI. trifida Don. andI. lacunosa L. Protoplasts of sweet potato were treated with iodoacetamide, whereas those ofI. trifida Don. andI. lacunosa L. were irradiated with X-rays. The asymmetric protoplast fusion was carried out by the electrofusion method and by polyethylene glycol treatment. Electrically-fused protoplasts initiated cell division, and then formed calli earlier than the polyethylene glycol-fused protoplasts. Plant regeneration occurred only in electrofused calli, suggesting that polyethylene glycol had some toxic effect on plant regeneration ability. Analysis of peroxidase isozymes confirmed the interspecific hybrid characteristics of both the fusion-derived calli and regenerated plants.  相似文献

Females ofSpodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) with different feeding experiences during their larval development were tested for their ovipositional response to methanol extracts of larval frass and semisynthetic diets. The effect of the following frass, diet and diet component extracts was tested: (a) frass fromS. littoralis orAgrotis segetum larvae fed on a potato-based diet; (b) frass fromS. littoralis larvae fed on a wheat germ-based diet; (c) potato and wheat germ-based diets; and (d) potatoes and wheat germ. Ovipositing females without prior experience of the potato diet were deterred by extracts of: (1) larval frass from either species fed on potato diet; (2) the potato-based diet; (3) potato. Also females with experience of the potato diet during only a part of their larval development were deterred from oviposition by frass of larvae reared on the potato diet and by the diet itself. However, for females reared on the potato diet for their entire larval development, oviposition was no longer deterred by either of the three extracts listed above. Extracts of: (1) frass from larvae of either species reared on wheat germ diet: (2) the wheat germ diet; or (3) wheat germ did not significantly affect oviposition. Females with ablated antennae were still deterred by frass extracts from larvae fed on potato diet, when they had been reared on the wheat germ diet. In feeding experiments, larvae of larval stage one and of larval stage three-four reared on either of the two diets preferred to feed on the wheat germ diet. However, the preference was significantly stronger for larvae with no prior contact with the potato diet. The effect of larval experience on the loss of oviposition-deterring activity by extracts of larval frass, diets and diet components is discussed in view of induction and selection.  相似文献

This study analyzes host plant use and obligate myrmecophily in Hallonympha paucipuncta, an endemic butterfly of the Cerrado. Larvae of H. paucipuncta are polyphagous, using at least 19 species of plants in 10 families. All larvae found were being tended by Crematogaster ants. Spatial distribution of larvae and tending ants were strongly aggregated, suggesting an influence of ants on oviposition and/or larval survival. Implications of obligate myrmecophily in the evolution of polyphagy in Riodinidae are discussed.  相似文献

1. Herbivory can change plant quality, which may have consequences for interactions between the inducing herbivore and other insect community members. 2. Studies investigating the effects of plant quality on herbivore performance often have neglected the egg stage, and instead introduced larvae onto the plant. Recently, we reported that herbivore oviposition by Pieris brassicae (Linnaeus) (Large Cabbage White Butterfly) reduced the plant quality of Brassica nigra L. (black mustard) for subsequent herbivores. 3. It remains unclear how persistent and common these plant‐mediated effects of oviposition are. Here, five species of wild Brassicaceae were used (B. nigra L., Brassica oleracea L., Sinapis arvensis L., Moricandia arvensis L., and Moricandia moricandioides Boiss). The response to oviposition by the specialist P. brassicae was determined by following the natural sequence of events: oviposition, egg, larval, and pupal development. All tested plant species are known to interact with P. brassicae in nature. Caterpillar, pupal mass, and development time on plants exposed to butterfly eggs were assessed compared with egg‐free plants. 4. It was shown that the plant‐mediated effects of oviposition are not specific for B. nigra but occur in most of the tested plant species except for M. arvensis. However, the strength of the plant‐mediated effect on caterpillar growth depended on plant species. Thus, across different members of the Brassicaceae family, oviposition can influence plant quality and has negative consequences on P. brassicae growth. Further studies are needed to assess to what extent this trait might be phylogenetically conserved.  相似文献

Plants were regenerated from mesophyll protoplasts of Ipomoea cairica L., a wild relative of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), and somatic hybrids between I. cairica L. and sweetpotato cv. Xushu 18 were obtained by PEG-mediated method. I. cairica L. protoplasts were isolated from the leaves of in vitro grown plants and cultured in a modified MS medium containing 0.05 mg l−1 2,4-D and 0.5 mg l−1 kinetin. Nine weeks after plating, the obtained small calluses up to about 2 mm in diameter were transferred to solid MS medium supplemented with 0.05 mg l−1 2,4-D and 0.5 mg l−1 kinetin for callus proliferation. Three weeks after transfer, the calluses were transferred to MS medium supplemented with 0–1.0 mg l−1 IAA and 1.0–3.0 mg l−1 BAP and further to hormone-free MS medium for plant regeneration. The frequencies of calluses forming plants ranged from 6.0% to 41.3% based on the different concentrations of IAA and BAP, and 2.0 mg l−1 BAP gave the highest regeneration frequency of protoplast-derived calluses in I. cairica L.. The regenerated plants, when transferred to soil, showed 100% survival. No morphological variations were observed. Mesophyll protoplasts of I. cairica L. were fused with protoplasts isolated from embryogenic suspension cultures of Xushu 18 by PEG-mediated method. The fused products were cultured with the best protoplast culture system of I. cairica L.. Finally, 114 plants were produced from 63 of the 182 calluses derived from the fused protoplasts, and 46 plants of them were confirmed to be somatic hybrids through peroxidase isozyme, RAPD, morphological and cytological analyses.  相似文献

用3种除草剂(2,4-D丁酯、麦草畏和塔隆)对五爪金龙(Ipomoea cairica L.Sweet)进行化学防除试验。结果表明:1.00 mL L-1的2,4-D丁酯可以彻底杀灭五爪金龙。喷施1.00 mL L-12,4-D丁酯20 d后,五爪金龙茎叶枯死率接近100%;60 d后五爪金龙的总生物量显著低于其它处理及对照;90 d后未出现生长恢复,最终盖度防效为99.8%。而喷施1.00 mL L-1的麦草畏40 d后,五爪金龙的茎叶枯死率为99.0%,但仍有少量存活的根,90 d后再次萌生率为10.0%;喷施1.00 mL L-1塔隆40 d后,五爪金龙的茎叶枯死率为100%,90 d后再次萌生率为100%。土壤残留分析表明:在有机质含量较高[(10.14±1.01)g kg-1]的土壤中2,4-D丁酯降解速率较快,半衰期为14 d,施药后80 d的土壤中已检测不到2,4-D丁酯。此外,在野外喷洒1.0 mL L-1的2,4-D丁酯对其它植物是安全的,施药1年后,样地内的植物均能恢复生长。因此,实践中可用1.00 mL L-1的2,4-D丁酯来防除五爪金龙。  相似文献

Plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have many eco-physiological functions. Induction of plant VOCs is known to occur upon herbivory. Herbivore-induced VOCs are involved in the attraction of predators and parasitoids, a phenomenon known as an indirect defense of plants. We measured the VOC profiles of the wild species Veronica spicata with and without larval feeding and oviposition by the specialist butterfly Melitaea cinxia. V. spicata showed great plasticity when deploying indirect defences. The induction of several ubiquitous terpenoids and green leaf volatiles (GLVs) was associated with larval feeding, whereas the increase of two ketones, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and t-geranylacetone and the suppression of GLVs were associated with oviposition by the butterfly.  相似文献

Glandular trichomes on foliage of the wild potato species, Solanum berthaultii Hawkes, deter oviposition by the potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella Zeller and negatively affect other important performance parameters. Oviposition deterring factors are localized in the glandular trichomes of S. berthaultii. When mechanically transferred to foliage of a susceptible potato cultivar, trichome contents reduced egg laying by 97%. Removal of glandular trichomes from S. berthaultii foliage using a combination of chemical and mechanical procedures increased oviposition rates ca. 210-fold. Removal of trichomes also led to increased mobility of larvae on the leaf surface, more leaf feeding, shorter larval development and larger pupae. The resistance conferred by glandular trichomes of S. berthaultii provides an important genetic trait potentially useful for management of PTM.  相似文献
