Spiders constitute a major arthropod group in regularly inundated habitats. Some species survive a flooding period under water. We compared survival during both submersion and a recovery period after submersion, in three stenotopic lycosids: two salt-marsh species Arctosa fulvolineata and Pardosa purbeckensis, and a forest spider Pardosa lugubris. Both activity and survival rates were determined under controlled laboratory conditions by individually surveying 120 females kept submerged in sea water. We found significant differences between the three species, with the two salt-marsh spiders exhibiting higher survival abilities. To our knowledge, this study reports for the first time the existence of a hypoxic coma caused by submersion, which is most pronounced in A. fulvolineata, the salt-marsh spider known to overcome tidal inundation under water. Its ability to fall into that coma can therefore be considered a physiological adaptation to its regularly inundated habitat.  相似文献

In the context of a main project that aims to recover modern data on diatom distribution applicable to paleosalinity reconstructions in coastal areas of Southern South America, the composition and distribution of dead diatom assemblages in the littoral zone of the Quequén Salado estuary (Argentina) were studied. Diatom zones were defined along the estuarine gradient by cluster analysis and related to the salinity range and sediment composition by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Four diatom zones were identified. A mixture of marine, brackish and freshwater diatoms, probably allochthonous, characterized the inlet (zone I). Marine/brackish taxa, represented mainly by Paralia sulcata dominated zone II, characterized by polyhaline conditions and sandy sediments. Zone III was characterized by mesohaline conditions, muddy sediments and the dominance of the estuarine diatom Amphora helenensis. Brackish/freshwater and freshwater diatoms dominated the headwaters (zone IV), where salinity was always below 5‰. The comparison of Quequén Salado diatom assemblages with previous results from the Quequén Grande estuary showed a similar taxonomic composition between both estuaries. However, differences in the salinity ranges of the estuaries (related to differences in the degree of human impact and tidal range) lead to a displacement in their spatial distribution along the longitudinal estuarine axis. This paper contributes to the knowledge of the ecological requirements of South American estuarine diatoms and provides useful data for paleosalinity reconstructions in the region. The conquest of land from the sea has been a long tradition in the Netherlands. When salt marshes were high enough, they were embanked when it was economically feasible, and transformed into intensively exploited agricultural land. This resulted in the transformation of halophytic communities to glycophytic communities. Often as an alternative, a low levee, a summerdike was built, which greatly reduced the flooding frequency of the landward summerpolder, hence creating a sedimentation deficit therein. Such summerpolders now cover 1200 ha in the Netherlands, 2100 ha in NW-Germany and small areas in England. Due to continuous embankments, the present salt-marsh area is relatively small with respect to the tidal basins. Discussions have been started how to increase the salt-marsh area. Two options will be discussed, firstly de-embankment of summerpolders and maintenance of the protective seawall, secondly increase of the effects of saline seepage behind the seawall by top soil removal. Both options include the restoration of salt-marsh communities (target communities) in intensively agriculturally exploited sites that have been salt marshes before. From the few examples abroad and experiments it is discussed (1) to which extent the sedimentation deficit in summerpolders could be compensated for, (2) if the soil seed bank is likely to contribute to re-establishment of salt-marsh communities, (3) if the dispersal of propagules of halophytic plants will be possible by hydrochory when the summerdike is breached, (4) to what extent is dispersal by endozoochory through waterfowl important in case re-establishment in a saline seepage area behind the seawall without open connection to the sea is envisaged. Two case studies of de-embanked summerpolders in the Netherlands revealed that the sedimentation deficit can be counteracted by rapid sedimentation, provided enough transport is possible from the foreshore. Dispersal by incoming tidal water from the nearby salt-marsh source area into the target area is possible for many salt-marsh plant species. The rate of success seems to depend on the relative position of source area and target area. A case study in a saline seepage area after top soil removal in the Netherlands, showed that the number of viable seeds dispersed by droppings from waterfowl is limited. Hence the possibilities for restoration of inland halophytic plant communities seem much lower than after de-embankment of summerpolders.  相似文献

To reconstruct sea‐level history from changes in tidal environments using diatom assemblages, we need to better understand the relations among brackish diatom assemblages and changing environments along elevational gradients from diverse coastal sites. Our statistical analysis reveals relations between environmental variables and brackish benthic diatom assemblages in the little studied region of south‐central Chile. Along four transects across salt marshes at two sites, we identified 224 diatom taxa in 112 samples. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis showed that tidal exposure time index and salinity were appropriately regressed against the abundance of diatom species using unimodal‐based methods. Our tests of classical and inverse regressions of weighted average and weighted averaging partial least squares (WA‐PLS) showed that WA‐PLS resulted in the highest coefficient of determination and the lowest root‐mean square of the error of prediction. Our regression will be useful in reconstructing environmental variables from fossil diatom assemblages in Chile.  相似文献

To provide insight into the importance of the salt-marsh ecotone as a sink for inorganic nitrogen in perched groundwater, measurements were made of the natural abundance of 15N in dissolved NO3-N and NH4-N and in the salt-marsh halophyte, Salicornia virginica, along an environmental gradient from agricultural land into a salt-marsh. The increase in the natural abundance of 15N (expressed by convention as 15N) of NO3-N, accompanied by the decrease in NO3-N (and total dissolved inorganic N, DIN) concentration along the gradient, suggested that the salt-marsh ecotone is a site of transformation, most likely through denitrification, of inorganic nitrogen in groundwater. 15N enrichment in S. virginica (and the parasitic herb, Cuscuta salina), along the tidal marsh boundary, relative to high and middle marsh locations, indicated the retention of groundwater nitrogen as vegetative biomass. The correlation between 15N Salicornia and 15NNH4 suggested a preference for NH4-N over NO3-N during uptake by this plant. Groundwater inputs enhanced the standing crop, above-ground productivity, and nitrogen content of S. virginica but the ralative effects of pore water salinity and DIN concentration on these parameters were not determined. 15N enrichment of marsh plants by groundwater DIN inputs could prove useful in tracing the fate of these inputs in the marsh food web.  相似文献

Marine snow aggregates are microbial hotspots that support high bacterial abundance and activities. We conducted laboratory experiments to compare cell-specific bacterial protein production (BPP) and protease activity between free-living and attached bacteria. Natural bacterial assemblages attached to model aggregates (agar spheres) had threefold higher BPP and two orders of magnitude higher protease activity than their free-living counterpart. These observations could be explained by preferential colonization of the agar spheres by bacteria with inherently higher metabolic activity and/or individual bacteria increasing their metabolism upon attachment to surfaces. In subsequent experiments, we used four strains of marine snow bacteria isolates to test the hypothesis that bacteria could up- and down-regulate their metabolism while on and off an aggregate. The protease activity of attached bacteria was 10-20 times higher than that of free-living bacteria, indicating that the individual strains could increase their protease activity within a short time (2 h) upon attachment to surfaces. Agar spheres with embedded diatom cells were colonized faster than plain agar spheres and the attached bacteria were clustered around the agar-embedded diatom cells, indicating a chemosensing response. Increased protease activity and BPP allow attached bacteria to quickly exploit aggregate resources upon attachment, which may accelerate remineralization of marine snow and reduce the downward carbon fluxes.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for reconstructing sedimentary environments on the basis of diatoms in clastic deposits of coastal wetlands. The method includes improvements and updates of previously described approaches of coding ecological data on diatom species for computer utilization and of combining diatom species into ecological groups, which are related to specific environments. The assessment of autochthonous and allochthonous diatoms is the major problem in the palaeoenvironmental diatom research in tide-influenced coastal areas, because the allochthonous influx by tidal currents (mainly marine planktonic and tychoplanktonic diatoms) is significant. In tidal deposits, the allochthonous diatoms often outnumber the autochthonous assemblage. Criteria for the assessment regarding which diatoms are in or out of place are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Vegetation zonation in salt marshes has traditionally been attributed largely to altitudinal differences, since altitude determines the temporal pattern of tidal flooding and is thus closely related to proximate determinants of the distribution of species and plant communities. We investigated the distribution of vascular plants and plant communities along a series of altitudinal transects in two salt marshes in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. Our results indicate that altitudinal range varies significantly both among species and among communities, and confirm that salt-marsh vegetation characteristics (species cover and composition) can be predicted on the basis of altitude, particularly at the lower levels of the profile.  相似文献

Summary Arylsulphatase activity was detected and characterized in intertidal sands and salt-marsh soils. In sands, highest activity was found in the rhizosphere ofHippophae rhamnoides L; although low activity was also found near Ammophila roots and in sands lacking plant-cover. Highest arylsulphatase activities, however, occurred in salt-marsh soils underSalicornia sp. Properties of arylsulphatase were similar in nearly all respects, to those reported for soil and marine sediment arylsulphatase.Linearity between amount of sand or salt-marsh soil and cellulase and rhodanese activities were also demonstrated, but no attempt was made to further characterise these enzymes.  相似文献

Analyses for iron, manganese, ash, and nitrogen are recordedfor some plants from salt marshes and shingle hooks. Ash ismuch higher, and iron and manganese are much lower, than inplants from underwater lake muds, woodland soils of varyinghumus content and acidity, and semi-aquatic marsh, fen, andbog soils. Since both lake muds and salt-marsh soils are deficientin oxygen, with iron and manganese presumably mobile as divalentions, the difference in concentration of the two elements inplants from the two types of habitat requires explanation. Itis suggested that the much greater total ion concentration ofthe salt-marsh soil solution may depress iron and manganeseassimilation through ionic antagonism.  相似文献

To understand distributions of coastal diatoms along Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, this paper describes diatom assemblages observed in 47 surface sediment samples from intertidal environments. One hundred and eighty-four diatom taxa were identified from five transects crossing tidal flats, salt marshes, and freshwater forests in Tofino, Ucluelet, and Port Alberni. Distributions of the diatom assemblages were consistent with those reported elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, but a few diatom taxa show different trends in their distributions. For example, one benthic species Denticula subtilis shows widespread distributions along the transect in Tofino. An ordination shown by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) using a combined dataset indicated overlapped scatter plots of diatom assemblages, suggesting that assemblages with similar species compositions are observed in more than one location. Hierarchical and k-means clustering analyses using Euclidean distance recognized unique small groups along each transect. Rank abundance curves show different trends for richness and evenness of diatom assemblages among the five transects.  相似文献

In the geological research of the Holocene coastal deposits of The Netherlands, diatoms are used to reconstruct the sedimentary facies, palaeo-tide levels and salinity gradients during the deposition of the sediments. In this paper, the results of diatom research from 4 borings, taken from the early and middle Holocene deposits of central North Holland are presented. The oldest marine influenced sediments in the area are the deposits of the ‘Velsen layer’, a clay layer rich in organic matter and deposited about 8000–700014C years before present (BP) at a depth of 20–12 m below present mean sea-level. This clay layer was formed in a shallow, permanently submerged environment with a limited tidal influence (lagoonal or pond-like conditions). The salinity changed from brackish/freshwater to marine/brackish. The younger sandy and clayey sediments, formed about 7000–4500 BP at a depth of 16–3 m below present mean sea-level, are classified as ‘tidal channel’ and ‘interchannel’ deposits. It is argued, on the base of both diatom and non-diatom criteria, that the lower and middle parts of the interchannel deposits in the central area of the palaeo-tidal basin of North Holland were formed in a subtidal environment. The upper part of the interchannel deposits and the deposits at the fringe of the North Holland tidal basin were formed in the intertidal zone or, at the fringe of the basin, even in the supratidal zone. The salinity in the North Holland tidal basin during the sedimentation of the tidal channel and interchannel deposits was marine/brackish to marine. This study indicates that diatoms, besides their palaeoecological applications, have chronostratigraphical significance (on a regional scale). The diatomsCymatosira belgica andActinoptychus splendens appear to be a useful (eco)stratigraphical marker in the Holocene coastal deposits of The Netherlands and Belgium.  相似文献

Thylakoid membranes retaining high oxygen-evolving activity (about 250 micromol O(2)/mg Chl/h) were prepared from a marine centric diatom, Chaetoceros gracilis, after disruption of the cells by freeze-thawing. We also succeeded in purification of Photosystem II (PSII) particles by differential centrifugation of the thylakoid membranes after treatment with 1% Triton X-100. The diatom PSII particles showed an oxygen-evolving activity of 850 and 1045 micromol O(2)/mg Chl/h in the absence and presence of CaCl(2), respectively. The PSII particles contained fucoxanthin chlorophyll a/c-binding proteins in addition to main intrinsic proteins of CP47, CP43, D2, D1, cytochrome b559, and the antenna size was estimated to be 229 Chl a per 2 molecules of pheophytin. Five extrinsic proteins were stoichiometrically released from the diatom PSII particles by alkaline Tris-treatment. Among these five extrinsic proteins, four proteins were red algal-type extrinsic proteins, namely, PsbO, PsbQ', PsbV and PsbU, whereas the other one was a novel, hypothetical protein. This is the first report on isolation and characterization of diatom PSII particles that are highly active in oxygen evolution and retain the full set of extrinsic proteins including an unknown protein.  相似文献

We investigated the composition, biomass and cell size dynamics of the marine planktonic diatom species along a coastal-open sea gradient in relation to the hydrological characteristics, during four oceanographic cruises in July 2005, May–June 2006, September 2006 and March 2007 in the Gulf of Gabes. The study of the marine planktonic diatoms throughout the sampling period showed the presence of 40 different species belonging to 22 pennate and 18 centric diatom species. Centric diatoms were more abundant than the pennate ones; 56% and 44% of total diatom abundance, respectively. Diatoms were very abundant, representing about 60% of the total phytoplankton abundance, with an exception in July 2005 (19%) during which Dictyochophyceae were the most dominant group (41% of the total phytoplankton abundance). Diatoms, which were dominant in the coastal samples, mainly proliferate in the semi-mixing conditions (May–June 2006), whereas they declined in the offshore area, most likely due to silicate shortage. In this period, in spite of the high abundance of diatom planktonic cells, only diatom biomass was correlated with silica amount, proving that biomass was a better ecological bio-indicator than abundance. The results suggest that the marine planktonic diatoms taxa were generally adapted to specific hydrological structure. In fact, the dominance index of diatoms showed that the biodiversity of diatoms increased gradually along the coastal-open sea gradient except in May–June 2006 during which a slight decrease along the inshore towards offshore areas was observed. This index increase depended on a coastal-open sea distance during thermal stratification (July 2005 and September 2006) and mixing periods (March 2007).  相似文献

High‐quality calibration data sets are required when diatom assemblages are used for monitoring ecological change or reconstructing palaeo‐environments. The quality of such data sets can be validated, in addition to other criteria, by the percentage of significant unimodal species responses as a measure of the length of an environmental gradient. This study presents diatom‐environment relationships analyzed from a robust data set of diatom communities living on submerged stones along a 2,000 km long coastline in the Baltic Sea area, including 524 samples taken at 135 sites and covering a salinity gradient from 0.4 to 11.4. Altogether, 487 diatom taxa belonging to 102 genera were recorded. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis showed that salinity was the overriding environmental factor regulating diatom community composition, while exposure to wave action and nutrient concentrations were of secondary importance. Modeling the abundances of the 58 most common diatom taxa yielded significant relationships with salinity for 57 taxa. Twenty‐three taxa showing monotonic responses were species with optimum distributions in freshwater or marine waters. Thirty‐four taxa showing unimodal responses were brackish‐water species with maximum distributions at different salinities. Separate analyses for small (cell biovolume <1,000 μm3) and large (≥1,000 μm3) taxa yielded similar results. In previous studies along shorter salinity gradients, large and small epilithic diatom taxa responded differently. From our large data, we conclude that counts of large diatom taxa alone seem sufficient for indicating salinity changes in coastal environments with high precision.  相似文献

Dynamic hydrochemical and vegetation gradients in fens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mixing of groundwater, river water and precipitation was studied in a discharge and a recharge fen in the Vechtplassen area, the Netherlands. The aim of the study was to characterize relationships between vegetation in fens, the chemical composition of the fen water, and the hydrologic regimes. We were particularly interested in the influence of polluted water from the river Vecht on vegetation and nutrient dynamics. Analyses were made for Ionic Ratio (IR = 2[Ca]/(2[Ca] + [Cl]), molar concentrations) and Electrical Conductivity (EC), all indices of the relative importance of each of the three main water sources: groundwater, river water and precipitation.During winter, water in the discharge fen was strongly influenced by calcium-rich groundwater (high IR, moderate EC), while the recharge fen was entirely fed by precipitation (low IR and EC). During summer, river water with a moderate IR and high EC infiltrated the fens and caused a dramatic change in the chemical composition of the fen water. In the discharge fen, infiltration occurred predominantly as sheetflow, causing inundation of the entire fen surface. River water infiltration affected the surface peat of this fen more severely than deeper peat layers. Spatial variation in water chemistry along the transect was small, and only one type of plant community was found. In the recharge fen, river water infiltration occurred in subsurface water, and rainwater that had accumulated during the winter persisted in the central parts of the fen. Gradients in fen water chemistry were correlated with the observed distribution of three plant associations. Differences in water chemistry could also be attributed to intra-site variation in the relative importance of the three water sources. In both fens, there was considerable temporal variation in the chemical composition of the fen water, clearly related to dynamics of the hydrologic regime, particularly infiltration of river water. There are indications that characteristic mesotraphent fen plant communities are negatively affected by water from the river Vecht. River water supply should therefore be avoided as much as possible if these fen plant communities are to be maintained.  相似文献

Actinoptychus splendens is a conspicuous and widely distributed marine diatom. At present it is common in the coastal waters of the southern North Sea, but it appears to be absent in the older Holocene deposits along the Dutch and Belgian coasts. Its first postglacial appearance here can be dated at between 4400 and 4100 BP. By 3800 BP it is well established in the region. Although generally not abundant, it can be found in nearly every sample of younger marine or brackish deposits. The large amount of material investigated from the area, as well as the high preservation potential and easy recognition of the species, preclude any other explanation for its apparent absence along southern North Sea shores prior to ±4100 BP, than a late natural immigration. This appears to be quite exceptional, all the common species which generally occur in association with A. splendens being present from the onset of Holocene sedimentation. A. splendens may become an important marker taxon in the Holocene stratigraphy of the coastal plains along the southern North sea.  相似文献

Glycolate dehydrogenase activity has been localized in the mitochondria of two marine diatoms. Polarographic data and difference spectra show that the enzyme is linked indirectly to oxygen via the electron transport system. The results presented indicate that the system responsible for the oxidation of glycolic acid in the diatom has evolved along lines distinctly different from glycolate oxidation in higher plants.  相似文献
