Littorina saxatilis and Littorina arcana collected from a boulder field low in the intertidal zone had a uric acid concentration significantly higher than snails collected from nearby cliff crevices that were at the upper limit of their vertical range on the shore. The absolute concentrations varied with different collections, suggesting a possible seasonal fluctuation in uric acid. L. arcana had a greater concentration of uric acid than did L. saxatilis when both were from the boulder field, but the two did not differ significantly when taken from crevices. Samples from the two sites were marked and transplanted; by four weeks the transplanted animals showed a tendency to develop a uric acid concentration similar to that of natives of the site, suggesting a physiological rather than a genetic adaptation. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity differed between animals from the two sites in the same manner as the uric acid concentration.  相似文献

This paper details attempts to breed members of the L. saxatilis species complex in the laboratory and to construct interspecific hybrids between them. Success in reciprocal crosses between animals from the type localities of the species of Littorina saxatilis (Olivi) and Littorina rudis (Maton) indicates that these two taxa are synonymous. Six of the twelve possible reciprocal hybridisation crosses between the four species (L. saxatilis, L. arcana Hannaford Ellis, L. nigrolineata Gray and L. neglecta Bean) have been attempted, with only one proving successful, that between male L. saxatilis and female L. arcana. This hybrid cross produces viable offspring, although at a lower frequency than either of the parental crosses in the laboratory, while the reciprocal cross has, as yet, proved unsuccessful. Limited work on the F1 hybrids shows them to be inter-fertile and also capable of backcrossing with male L. saxatilis, but not with female L. saxatilis or L. arcana. Details are also given of attempts to find natural hybrids in sympatric populations of the species of the complex, using gel electrophoresis.  相似文献

A geographically-based study of shell shape in small rough periwinkles   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
A study using principal component analysis and discriminant analysis was carried out on shell shape variation in 3093 specimens of rough periwinkles, 2500 of which were below 5.5 mm in columella length, from around the North Atlantic. Using a combination of colour plus sculpture, and life history trait, the snails were classified by inspection and examination into Littorina nigrolineata, L. arcana, L. saxatilis and L. neglecta. Principal component analyses indicated that similar aspects of variation were important in the different taxa, but these were sometimes of differing levels of importance between L. saxatilis and L. neglecta. Crossvalidation in a discriminant analysis showed classification of shells larger than 5.5 mm to have at least an 88% accuracy. That of shells below 5.5 mm showed an accuracy of 49% in L. arcana, increasing to 54% in L. saxatilis and 63% in L. neglecta, with 76% accuracy for small L. nigrolineata. This last was a special case as only one site was sampled, therefore comparative data are not available. This geographically-based study reveals that L. neglecta is more homogeneous over its range than recently reported by other workers and shows greater differences from L. saxatilis than the latter does from either L. nigrolineata or L. arcana. Size effects do not account for these differences because L. neglecta is morphometrically distinct from both large and small L. saxatilis. Furthermore, small, mid-shore L. saxatilis classify with large high-shore L. saxatilis in discriminant analysis, not with L. neglecta. These results provide evidence that the taxon L. neglecta is more distinct than has sometimes been suggested.  相似文献

The Belgian coast has no natural rocky sites but a number of man-made constructions are colonized by rocky shore organisms. The rough periwinkle, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi), lacks a planktonic larval stage but is found on most breakwaters along the Belgian coast, a few built as recently as 1986. This indicates a good potential of dispersal along this sandy shallow coast, nearly as good as for the planktonic developer Littorina littorea (L.) which is found on generally the same sites in Belgium. The breakwater populations of L. saxatilis, however, tend to be somewhat less variable (level of heterozygosity about 10% less) than non-Belgian L. saxatilis populations of natural sites. This suggests that the breakwater populations have passed through bottlenecks when founded, but probably restored population sizes fairly rapidly afterwards. No relationship is found between geographic and genetic distances between populations of L. saxatilis.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of shell characteristics (four parameters)and allozyme allele frequencies (eight to nine polymorphic loci)of sympatric Littorina saxatilis and Littorina arcana subpopulationsfrom Filey Brigg on the east coast of England supports theiridentification as closely related but separate species. Oneenzyme system, esterase-2, was nearly species diagnostic. Resultswere generally comparable with an earlier study of the two speciesfrom East Lothian, Scotland. Littorina saxatilis was again foundto be more variable than L. arcana. (Received 14 December 1983;  相似文献

Three species in the Littorina saxatilis complex (the ovoviviparousL. saxatilis and the two oviparous species L. arcana and L.nigrolineata) were screened for the products of up to 22 lociusing gel elec-trophoresis. Analysis of allele frequencies andderived genetic distances showed that, with rare exceptionsin L. saxatilis and L. arcana, conspecific populations clusteredtogether. Sympatric pairs of populations showed significantdifferentiation at many polymorphic loci. The results confirmedthe biological reality of the three taxa, and did not suggestthe existence of any previously unrecognized species. The speciesare genetically closely related to each other, with Nei geneticdistances ranging from 0.035 to 0.083. (Received 24 October 1989; accepted 18 April 1990)  相似文献

Studying historic invasions can provide insight into the ongoing invasions that threaten global biodiversity. In this study, we reconsider the impacts of Littorina littorea and Carcinus maenas on the rocky intertidal community of the Gulf of Maine. Past research using invader-removal experiments demonstrated strong top-down effects of L. littorea on algal community structure; however, such removal experiments may overlook the long-term effects of niche shifts and local extinctions caused by invasive species. We considered how a niche-shift in the native littorine, Littorina saxatilis, may change the interpretation of L. littorea impacts. Using a factorial experiment crossing predator presence/absence with L. littorea presence/absence, we found that L. saxatilis is able to exert top-down control on ephemeral algae similar to that exerted by L.␣littorea and that both competition by L. littorea and predation by C. maenas have strong, negative impacts on L. saxatilis. We also found higher predation rates on protected shores and at lower tidal heights and preferential predation on L.␣saxatilis compared to L. littorea. While movement experiments demonstrate that behavioral response to tidal height is the proximate cause of L. saxatilis exclusion from the lower intertidal, our study suggests that the ultimate causes are the additive effects of competition from and predation by invasive species.  相似文献

The reproductive periodicities of four Iittorinids, Littorinaneglecta, L. nigrolineata, L. saxatilis and L. arcana were examinedin sympatric populations at Porth Swtan, Anglesey, North Wales.Three species, L. neglecta, L. nigrolineata and L. arcana, werefound to show marked reproductive periodicity. L. saxatilisshowed no periodicity and large numbers of animals were foundin breeding condition throughout the year. The oviparous speciesL. nigrolineata and L. arcana, came into reproductive conditionin the late summer or early autumn, L. nigrolineata in Augustand L. arcana in September, and their populations at Porth Swtanhad few individuals in breeding condition in the late springand early summer. L. neglecta, however, showed a periodicitywith high numbers of breeding animals throughout the springand summer and very low numbers in the autumn. For L. neglectathe basis of reproductive periodicity is shown to be the synchronizedannual life cycle of individuals of this species. It is thereforebelieved to differ from the other three species in which individualsare longer-lived and are supposed to undergo seasonal periodsof reproductive inactivity. The esterase system has been studied using isoelectric focusingin two closely related rough periwinkles, Littorina saxatilisand L. arcana, in an investigation of possible differences betweenthe two species at this level of discrimination. Collectionsof both species were obtained from Yorkshire, north Cornwalland south Devon; L. saxatilis was also obtained from sites insouth Cornwall (in and near the estuary of the Tamar), Dorsetand Scotland, where L. arcana was not present. There is considerablevariation both within and between sites which tends to maskany overall differences between the two species. However, ingeneral there is a much greater degree of heterogeneity withinsamples of L. saxatilis than within samples of L: arcana whenboth species are found together; this is reflected in the ShannonWiener diversity index for bands. Also the number of esterasebands is greater for L. saxatilis than for L. arcana at eachof the five sites where both occurred. A dendrogram derivedfrom the percentage occurrence of each band present in eachsample produced a reasonable degree of separation of the twospecies (Received 8 January 1988; accepted 24 February 1988)  相似文献

Two intertidal snails, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi, 1972) (upper eulittoral fringe/maritime zone) and Littorina obtusata (Linnaeus, 1758) (lower eulittoral) were collected from a boulder shore on Nobska Point, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in July and acclimated for 15–20 days at 4 ° or 21 °C. Oxygen consumption rate (Vo2) was determined for 11–15 subsamples of individuals at 4 °, 11 ° and 21 °C with silver/platinum oxygen electrodes. Multiple factor analysis of variance (MFANOVA) of lo10 transformed values of whole animal Vo2 with log10 dry tissue weight (DTW) as a covariant revealed that increased test temperature induced a significant increase in Vo2 in both species (P<0.00001). In contrast, MFANOVA revealed that temperature acclimation did not affect Vo2 in either L. saxatilis (P= 0.35) or L. obtusata (P= 0.095). Thus, neither species displayed a capacity for the typical metabolic temperature compensation marked by an increase in Vo2 at any one test temperature in individuals acclimated to a lower temperature that is characteristic of most ectothermic animals. Lack of capacity for metabolic temperature acclimation has also been reported in other littorinid snail species, and may be characteristic of the group as a whole. Lack of capacity for respiratory temperature acclimation in these two species and other littorinids may reflect the extensive semi-diurnal temperature variation that they are exposed to in their eulittoral and eulittoral fringe/maritime zone habitats. In these habitats, any metabolic benefits derived from longer-term temperature compensation of metabolic rates are negated by extreme daily temperature fluctuations. Instead, littorinid species appear to have evolved mechanisms for immediate metabolic regulation which, in L. saxatilis and L. obtusata and other littorinids, appear to centre on a unique ability for near instantaneous suppression of metabolic rate and entrance into short-term metabolic diapause at temperatures above 20–35 °C, making typical seasonal respiratory compensation mechanisms characteristic of most ectotherms of little adaptive value to littorinid species.  相似文献

Three sister species of rough periwinkles, viz. Littorina saxatilis (Olivi 1792), L. arcana (Hannaford Ellis 1978) and L. compressa (Jeffreys 1865) from the Barents Sea (Russia), the White Sea (Russia) and the Norwegian Sea (Norway) were studied. The identification of two sibling species L. saxatilis and L. arcana is often difficult as both species have extremely similar shell morphology and reproductive systems. Only mature females can be unambiguously distinguished, with a jelly gland present in female L. arcana, but which is replaced by a brood pouch containing developing embryos in L. saxatilis. No clear-cut diagnostic features have been found to discriminate between males or juveniles of the two species. The very first diagnostic DNA marker (DNA fragment A2.8, 271 bp length) for L. arcana and L. saxatilis separation was developed. The marker was derived from apparently species-specific L. arcana DNA fragments obtained via Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. This fragment was cloned and sequenced, whereupon specific primers were designed and the amplification was surveyed in a large number of morphologically well-identified females of both species. Subsequently, the specific DNA marker was used for the identification of male L. arcana and partners in copulating pairs. In this way, we obtained evidence of possible interspecific hybridization between the sibling species L. arcana and L. saxatilis living in sympatry in natural populations: the presence of A2.8 fragment in 12% of morphologically well identified L. saxatilis females and its absence in 14% of morphologically well identified L. arcana females. The A2.8 fragment never amplified in L. saxatilis from sites without L. arcana. The A2.8 fragment did not amplify in L. compressa, not even in microsympatric populations, and we did not observe interspecific copulations between L. arcana and L. compressa.  相似文献

Nitrogenous excretion in two snails, Littorina saxatilis (high intertidal) and L. obtusata (low intertidal) was studied in relation to temperature acclimation (at 4° and 21°C), including total N excretion rates, the fraction of urea in N excretion, corresponding O:N ratios and the partitioning of deaminated protein between catabolic and anabolic processes at 4°, 11° and 21°C. Aggregate N excretion rates in both species showed no significant compensatory adjustments following acclimation. Total weight specific N excretion rates at 21°C were higher in standard 3 mg L. saxatilis (739 ng N mg−1 h−1) than standard 5 mg L. obtusata (257 ng N mg−1 h−1) for snails acclimated to 21°C. Comparisons of Q10 values of total weight specific N excretion to Q10 values for weight specific oxygen consumption ({xxV}O2) between 4° to 11 °C and 11° to 21°C indicated that, while total rates of catabolic metabolism ({xxV}O2) and protein deamination in L. obtusata were essentially parallel, the relationship between N excretion and {xxV}O2 in L. saxatilis revealed the partitioning of a larger share of deaminated protein carbon into anabolism at 4° and 21°C than at 11°C. Urea N accounted for a larger share of aggregate N excreted in L. saxatilis than in L. obtusata, but in both species urea N is a greater proportion of total N excreted when acclimated at 4°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 1 to 2.15) than in snails acclimated to 21°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 0.46 to 1.39). Molar O:N ratios indicate that the proportion of metabolism supported by protein catabolism is greater in L. saxatilis (O:N range: 2.5–8.4) than in L. obtusata (O:N range: 7.3–13.0). In both species, regardless of acclimation temperature, the O:N ratios are generally lowest (high protein catabolism) at 4°C and highest at 21°C.  相似文献

Seven polymorphic microsatellite loci are described in the marine intertidal gastropod Littorina saxatilis. Preliminary data on allelic variation of these loci in a White Sea population of L. saxatilis are presented in order to assess their potential utility as high‐resolution genetic markers for this model species.  相似文献

Populations of periwinkles Littorina saxatilis (Olivi 1792) and L. arcana Hannaford Ellis, 1978 are well suited for microevolutionary studies, being at the same time closely related and intraspecifically diverse. The divergence between these two sibling species, sympatric over large parts of their distribution areas, is small, the only morphological difference being the pallial gland complex structure in females. Molecular identification is possible with the use of a RAPD nuclear marker (cloned A2.8 DNA fragment) typical for L. arcana. However, in some individuals from sympatric populations molecular and morphological criteria suggest conflicting species affiliation, which may be explained either by hybridization or by shared ancestral polymorphism. We tested the hybridization hypotheses examining the micro-spatial distribution of these two species across the intertidal zone in two distant sites at the Barents Sea. We found that (a) the frequency of putative hybrids in sympatric populations was proportional to the frequency of L. arcana; (b) L. saxatilis bearing A2.8 DNA fragment were almost absent in the lower part of the intertidal zone, where L. arcana was absent too; (c) there was a close positive correlation between the distribution of potential parent molluscs and putative hybrids. Moreover, logistic regression models showed a good agreement between the distribution of putative hybrid frequencies and that of parental species frequencies. All our observations taken together support the hypothesis of hybridization between L. saxatilis and L. arcana. Elucidating the mechanisms that support the species status of these sympatric populations is necessary.  相似文献

As adults Littorina littorea and L. saxatilis have overlapping distributions, both on the shore and on a geographical scale, this implies that they are affected by similar selective forces to a large extent. The two species have, however, different reproductive strategies. Littorina littorea has a planktonic larval stage lasting 4–6 weeks, whereas L. saxatilis has direct development. This influences dispersal rates of the two species, and gene flow and effective population size are both assumed to be much smaller in L. saxatilis than in L. littorea. Intraspeciflc variation in morphological and allozyme characters differs between the two species. Littorina littorea is homogeneous for both types of characters, both within and between populations, while populations of L. saxatilis may show pronounced differences in shell characters with micro-environment changes, and allozyme variation is markedly higher in this species too. The polymorphism in shell characters of L. saxatilis and the monomorphism of L. littorea, may be expected from theory as a consequence of the different dispersal strategies. Also the lack of divergence between geographically separate populations of L. littorea, but the high degree of between population differentiation in L. saxatilis, could be attributed to the high and low dispersal rates, respectively. However, the larger allozyme variation within subpopulations of L. saxatilis compared to that of L. littorea, is surprising as the former species has a smaller effective population size than the latter. Furthermore, there is no correlation between dispersal ability and overall allozyme heterozygosity, when 10 additional species of Littorina are included in the comparison. It is suggested that different evolutionary backgrounds of different species will possibly explain this, as neither selectionist nor neutralist models alone account for the observation. That is, an earlier passage through a population bottleneck may, for example, influence the genetic variation for a long period of time.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of 19 populations of Littorina saxatilis (Olivi) was estimated by four different approaches. Three of these operate upon a population by population matrix of genetic distances: average linkage clustering, and two versions of the Fitch-Margoliash method. The fourth method was a maximum likelihood estimate based on differences in allele frequencies between populations. The study aims to assess how well each method estimates the phylogeny by including seven populations of the closely related species L. arcana Hannaford Ellis. The rationale behind this is that a good estimation technique should be able to separate these two monophyletic taxa. The results show that, by our criteria, the maximum likelihood method yields the best estimate and the unconstrained Fitch-Margoliash technique gives reasonable estimates. Both average-linkage clustering and the Fitch-Margoliash method with evolutionary clock perform less well. We argue that this is expected since both these techniques are based on probably unrealistic assumptions such as the overall rate of evolutionary divergence being homogeneous over phyletic lines.  相似文献

On the basis of collections from SW Wales and W Ireland it isshown that small (<5 mm) black and/or white Littorina occurringin the barnacle zone on exposed shores, of the L. neglecta shelltype, comprise three species. From their reproductive anatomythese correspond to L. saxatilis, L. arcana and L. nigrolineata, and are interpreted as analogous barnacle-dwelling ecotypesof these species. This adds to the evidence that L. neglectais not a distinct species, but an ecotype of L. saxatilis. (Received 1 June 1992; accepted 23 June 1992)  相似文献

Larval digenean parasites were studied in Littorina obtusata (L.) and L. mariae Sacchi & Rastelli at Sawdern Point in West Wales. Shell parameters, ovipositor and shell colour, penis morphology and sex ratios were scored, and the influence of parasitism studied. A total of 7 species of parasites were found, although the prevalence was very low in L. mariae, especially in the females. The parasitic gigantism that has been described in other species of gastropod was not found in this study. Parasitic castration does occur in some infected male L. obtusata, resulting in severe stunting of the penis. However, this phenomena was never observed in L. mariae. The winkle species are congeneric and inhabit broadly similar niches on the shore; their life histories are however quite different — one being annual and the other perennial. This probably affects exposure to infection, and might explain the differing prevalence of the parasites.  相似文献

The zonation patterns of Littorina obtusata (L.) and Littorina mariae Sacchi et Rastelli were shown to be quite distinct on a sheltered rocky shore. L. obtusata was found at all the heights sampled; it reached peak numbers at mid shore on the alga Ascophyllum nodosum L. (Le Jol). There was no difference in the tidal height occupied by adults or juveniles; or in the mean size of L. obtusata along the vertical gradient of the shore. In contrast L. mariae occurred exclusively low on the shore, on Fucus serratus L. Translocation of the two species within their respective levels resulted in random movement after 4 days, although initial movements after 1 and 2 days were sometimes directional. Animals transplanted to the normal level of the other species showed directional movement towards their home zone; this was most pronounced after 4 days. There was no difference in the distance moved by the two species, although the distance moved did vary with tidal height, both species moving further at mid shore than low shore. Distances moved by littorinids at replicate areas in the low shore were similar but those at mid shore did vary. There was an interaction between the species and the different tidal heights which revealed that transplanted species moved further than translocated species at the same tidal level. However, this was only significant in the case of L. mariae. It is suggested that the close relationship between the winkles and their host algae may direct the homing behaviour of displaced individuals.  相似文献

We investigated variation in shell size and shape of marinesnail species of the Littorina saxatilis complex (L. saxatilis,L. compressa and L. arcana) using geometric morphometric methods. These morphologically similar periwinkle species that are commonin the European intertidal have presented many problems fordiagnosis based on morphology alone. A discriminant analysisdemonstrated that geometric morphometrics is very efficientfor diagnosing individuals to species among sympatric populations. We successfully diagnosed an average of 96% of the specimens(with 85.7–100% correct diagnosis for specific comparisons). The diagnosis capability of this method is absolute at the populationlevel. This makes the technique potentially useful for the designof manipulative field or laboratory experiments. Moreover, ageometric-morphometric analysis was also accomplished in twosnail ecotypes (H and M) of L. saxatilis from rocky shores ofNE England which are apparently adapted to different degreesof wave exposure. We found that the H (exposed) ecotype hasa relatively rounded shell shape with a bigger aperture, whereasthe M (protected) ecotype has a smaller aperture.
