  • 1.1. Oysters were exposed for 2- and 5-day periods to increased salinity (26%.–38%.), anoxia, turbidity and drilling effluents.
  • 2.2. After two days, the FAA pool in the gill tissue of oysters exposed to 38%. salinity had elevated glycine, alanine and β-alanine levels; oysters exposed to anoxia showed elevated glycine and alanine and decreased aspartic acid levels.
  • 3.3. After 2 days, both oysters exposed to turbidity and to drilling effluents had increased cysteic acid levels. Glutamic acid and alanine levels were also elevated in oysters exposed to drilling effluents.
  • 4.4. After 5 days, glycine, alanine and β-alanine remained above control levels in oysters exposed to increased salinity whereas in those exposed to anoxia, turbidity and drilling effluents, a significant decrease in most amino acids occurred with the total FAA pool decreasing by 50%.
  • 5.5. The FAA pool's response was unique for each stress studied suggesting that the FAA pool may prove to be a useful diagnostic tool for determining a posteriori the causative agent responsible for a given stress response.

  • 1.1. Developing eggs of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) and vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were kept at 1–2°C and some eggs taken gradually up to 8°C to provoke mass hatching of embryos.
  • 2.2. Wet weight, dry matter and the contents of lipid, protein and ash were measured in fish during the course of experiment.
  • 3.3. Dry matter content decreased gradually in whitefish eggs from 15.64 to 11.95% during 1 month at 1–2°C, whereas vendace eggs showed only a slight decrease from 16.27 to 15.53%.
  • 4.4. In both species protein content decreased but lipid increased when approaching the natural time of hatching.
  • 5.5. During delayed hatching at low water temperatures protein contributes to catabolism, whereas lipid content decreased only in the later phase of the experiment.
  • 6.6. Larvae starved for 10 days after hatching lost increasing amounts of dry matter (from 26.1 to 50.3% of body weight) and protein (from 18.7 to 45.9% of body weight) as they remained longer in cold water as embryos.
  • 7.7. A correspondence was found between assessment of metabolic utilization of body stores based on chemical analysis of fish body and previous work on oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion.

  • 1.1. C-reactive protein (CRP) isolated from a marine teleost (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) an structurally resembling mammalian CRP was added to cultures of leucocytes obtained from fish peripheral blood or mouse spleens.
  • 2.2. A statistically significant dose-dependent stimulation by the fish CRP, of [3H]thymidine incorporation into normal mouse spleen cells, was observed. The effect was substantially reduced in the presence of phosphorylcholine.
  • 3.3. Addition of fish CRP to fish leucocytes or to cultures of nu nu mouse spleen cells did not result in significant stimulation. This suggests that although the CRP is not mitogenic for fish leucocytes it exerts a selective stimulatory effect on mouse T cells.
  • 4.4. A synergistic stimulatory effect between fish CRP and PHA was abolished by phosphorylcholine and suggests that phosphorylcholine residues may contribute to the binding sites of mammalian lymphocytes.

  • 1.1. Accumulation of free amino acids (FAA) in the isolated foot muscle of the brackish-water bivalve Corbicula japonica during the initial stage of hyperosmotic stress was quantitatively and qualitatively similar to that in the foot of the intact animal.
  • 2.2. Aminooxyacetate (AOA), a transaminase inhibitor, markedly inhibited alanine accumulation and promoted ornithine accumulation in the isolated foot. Iodoacetate (IAA), a glycolytic inhibitor, caused no significant alteration in the alanine level and the TLC pattern of FAA. Both the inhibitors scarcely influenced the pool size of total ninhydrin positive substances (NPS).
  • 3.3. A major part of the carbon of accumulated FAA during the initial stage of hyperosmotic stess did not seem to arise from glycolysis.
  • 4.4. Free d-alanine as well as l-alanine accumulated in isolated foot muscle exposed to hyperosmotic stress.

  • 4.4. Instead, they contain an unidentified low molecular weight acid-soluble compound to which the high pH buffering capacity can be attributed.

  • 5.5. The mean temperatures of the abdomen region changed from 20.79°C in calves to 22.17°C in older bison (Gr. B).
  • 6.6. The cluster analysis divided the bison into four groups named hot, warm, cool and cold bison.
  • 7.7. Only air temperature measured 2 m above the ground and snow cover influenced the integrated bison temperature. Age, sex and mass as well as some environmental factors had no influence.
  • 8.8. Measurements made 1 to nearly 4hr after a bison's death showed a drop in rectal temperature and mostly increases in temperatures of the humerus and abdomen regions.

  • 1.1. In sea-water, adult salmon (S. salar) exchange an average of 12.6% of total body sodium/hr.
  • 2.2. Following transfer to fresh water sodium uptake follows Michaelis-Menton kinetics. Fmax = 2.40 mmol Na/1 ECF/hr, Km = 0.26 mmol Na/1. The uptake system is fully activated immediately following transfer to fresh water.
  • 3.3. Post smolts adapted to sea-water for 3 months take up sodium at only one third of the rate of adult fish following return to fresh water.
  • 4.4. The concentration of prolactin in the plasma is low in sea-water adapted fish and does not rise during the first 8 hr in fresh water.
  • 5.5. At pH 5 sodium uptake is reduced by almost 90%, even in the absence of aluminium, but recovers immediately on return to neutral water.
  • 6.6. At pH 5 and 20 μmol Al/1 there is little further effect on sodium uptake but after 6 hr in aluminium the inhibition of sodium uptake continues after return to neutral aluminium fresh water and uptake is only 50% of normal 24 hr later.

  • 1.1. When Mytilus galloprovincialis were transferred from 38 to 19%. sea water (S), the metabolism became anaerobic for at least 8 hr. After 24 hr the animals were entirely aerobic again.
  • 2.2. Upon transfer to 19%. S, the total free amino acid concentration in haemolymph doubled within 4 hr, remaining nearly constant thereafter, up to 48 hr.
  • 3.3. In the posterior adductor muscle a strong decrease of alanine and glycine occurred at 48 hr exposure to 19%. S, and a smaller decrease of glutamate; taurine remained relatively constant. When transferred again to 38%. S after 14 days, a strong overcompensation occurred in the concentrations of alanine and proline, and a smaller overcompensation in those of threonine and serine.
  • 4.4. In the gill no distinct change in the amino acid pool occurred during 14 days of exposure, with the exception of a decrease in serine. When transferred again to 38%. S, a strong overcompensation occurred in alanine, proline, glycine and serine, and a smaller in glutamate and threonine.
  • 5.5. No evidence for anaerobic metabolism in the decrease of the amino acid pool was found.
  • 6.6. M. galloprovincialis is less able to adapt to low salinities than the more euryhaline M. edulis.

  • 1.1. Polymorphism of native myosin and myosin heavy chain (MHC) of fish skeletal muscles was analysed by pyrophosphate and SDS-gel electrophoreses.
  • 2.2. Depending on the species, three or four myosin isoforms were detected in the white muscle, one or two isoforms in the pure red muscle, and four isomyosins were found in the red muscle composed of red and pink (intermediate) fibres.
  • 3.3. It is suggested that all main types of fish muscle fibre (red, intermediate and white) differ in myosin isoform content.
  • 4.4. Myosin heavy chain of the red muscle is a distinct protein from that of the white muscle. However, structural differences between these proteins vary among species.

  • 1.1. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to experimental temperatures of 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36°C for a 4-week period were used to investigate the effect of temperature acclimation on the frequency of opercular movement (FOM), growth and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity in heart, liver and muscle.
  • 2.2. An exponential relationship between FOM and temperature after the first week (1010 =1.76) disappeared after the second week.
  • 3.3. The initially high FOM at temperatures of 30 or 36°C and the low FOM at 18 or 12°C changed over 4 weeks to approach the FOM of fish at 24°C.
  • 4.4. This change in the relationship of FOM to temperature from highly dependent to independent appeared to be thermal compensation.
  • 5.5. Heart and liver CCO activities were significantly affected by temperature, with the lowest activity at the approximate optimum temperature for growth, 24°C.
  • 6.6. Highest CCO activities for heart and liver occurred at both the highest and lowest temperatures.
  • 7.7. Among the three tissues, heart CCO activity was generally the highest and most affected by acclimation temperature.
  • 8.8. Muscle tissue had the lowest CCO activity and was unaffected by temperature.
  • 9.9. The high CCO activity at a cold acclimation of temperature 12°C was probably due to thermal compensation and the high activity at 36°C may have been a result of thermal stress.

  • 4.4. Conversely, the transfer from BW to SW provoked transitory hypermineralization. In adapted fish, cortisol levels strongly decreased, and osmolality slightly increased.

  • 1.1. The effects of thermal acclimatization at 10 and 24°C on heart rate were investigated on unrestrained soles (Solea vulgaris).
  • 2.2. The sensitivity of heart rate to temperature changes induced by temperature acclimatization was higher in cold-acclimatized than in warm-acclimatized soles.
  • 3.3. Heart rate of cold-acclimatized fish to temperature changes was not affected by blocking the vagal tone with atropine.
