Silicon‐based anodes are an appealing alternative to graphite for lithium‐ion batteries because of their extremely high capacity. However, poor cycling stability and slow kinetics continue to limit the widespread use of silicon in commercial batteries. Performance improvement has been often demonstrated in nanostructured silicon electrodes, but the reaction mechanisms involved in the electrochemical lithiation of nanoscale silicon are not well understood. Here, in‐situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction is used to monitor the subtle structural changes occurring in Si nanoparticles in a Si‐C composite electrode during lithiation. Local analysis by electron energy‐loss spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy is performed to interrogate the nanoscale morphological changes and phase evolution of Si particles at different depths of discharge. It is shown that upon lithiation, Si nanoparticles behave quite differently than their micrometer‐sized counterparts. Although both undergo an electrochemical amorphization, the micrometer‐sized silicon exhibits a linear transformation during lithiation, while a two‐step process occurs in the nanoscale Si. In the first half of the discharge, lithium reacts with surfaces, grain boundaries and planar defects. As the reaction proceeds and the cell voltage drops, lithium consumes the crystalline core transforming it into amorphous LixSi with a primary particle size of just a few nanometers. Unlike the bulk silicon electrode, no Li15Si4 or other crystalline LixSi phases were formed in nanoscale Si at the fully‐lithiated state.  相似文献

A novel Sn4P3/graphite composite anode material with superior capacity and cycling performance (651 mA h g?1 after 100 cycles) is investigated by in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. Extended X‐ray absorption fine structure modeling and detailed analysis of local environment changes are correlated to the cell capacity and reveal the mechanism of lithiation/delithiation process. Results show that in the first two lithiation/delithiation cycles crystalline Sn4P3 is fully converted to an amorphous SnPx phase, which in further cycles participates in reversible conversion and alloying reactions. The superior reversibility of this material is attributed to the highly dispersed SnPx in the graphite matrix, which provides enhanced electrical conductivity and prevents aggregation of Sn clusters during the lithiation/delithiation process. The gradual capacity fading in long‐term cycling is attributed to the observed increase in the size and the amount of metallic Sn clusters in the delithiated state, correlated to the reduced recovery of the SnPx phase. This paper reveals the mechanism responsible for the highly reversible tin phosphides and provides insights for improving the capacity and cycle life of conversion and alloying materials.  相似文献

In this paper the effect of the microstructure of remote plasma‐deposited amorphous silicon films on the grain size development in polycrystalline silicon upon solid‐phase crystallization is reported. The hydrogenated amorphous silicon films are deposited at different microstructure parameter values R* (which represents the distribution of SiHx bonds in amorphous silicon), at constant hydrogen content. Amorphous silicon films undergo a phase transformation during solid‐phase crystallization and the process results in fully (poly‐)crystallized films. An increase in amorphous film structural disorder (i.e., an increase in R*), leads to the development of larger grain sizes (in the range of 700–1100 nm). When the microstructure parameter is reduced, the grain size ranges between 100 and 450 nm. These results point to the microstructure parameter having a key role in controlling the grain size of the polycrystalline silicon films and thus the performance of polycrystalline silicon solar cells.  相似文献

We report the direct observation of microstructural changes of LixSi electrode with lithium insertion. HRTEM experiments confirm that lithiated amorphous silicon forms a shell around a core made up of the unlithiated silicon and that fully lithiated silicon contains a large number of pores of which concentration increases toward the center of the particle. Chemomechanical modeling is employed in order to explain this mechanical degradation resulting from stresses in the LixSi particles with lithium insertion. Because lithiation‐induced volume expansion and pulverization are the key mechanical effects that plague the performance and lifetime of high‐capacity Si anodes in lithium‐ion batteries, our observations and chemomechanical simulation provide important mechanistic insight for the design of advanced battery materials.  相似文献

Operando X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies of Ge anodes are carried out to understand the effect of cycling rate on Ge phase transformation during charge/discharge process and to relate that effect to capacity. It is discovered that the formation of crystalline Li15Ge4 (c‐Li15Ge4) during lithiation is suppressed beyond a certain cycling rate. A very stable and reversible high capacity of ≈1800 mAh g?1 can be attained up to 100 cycles at a slow C‐rate of C/21 when there is complete conversion of Ge anode into c‐Li15Ge4. When the C‐rate is increased to ≈C/10, the lithiation reaction is more heterogeneous and a relatively high capacity of ≈1000 mAh g?1 is achieved with poorer electrochemical reversibility. An increase in C‐rate to C/5 and higher reduces the capacity (≈500 mAh g?1) due to an impeded transformation from amorphous LixGe to c‐Li15Ge4, and yet improves the electrochemical reversibility. A proposed mechanism is presented to explain the C‐rate dependent phase transformations and the relationship of these to capacity fading. The operando XRD and XAS results provide new insights into the relationship between structural changes in Ge and battery capacity, which are important for guiding better design of high‐capacity anodes.  相似文献

Multiple‐internal‐reflection infrared spectroscopy allows for the study of thin‐film amorphous silicon electrodes in situ and in operando, in conditions typical of those used in Li‐ion batteries. It brings an enhanced sensitivity, and the attenuated‐total‐reflection geometry allows for the extraction of quantitative information. When electrodes are cycled in representative electrolytes, the simultaneously recorded infrared spectra give an insight into the solid/electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition. They also unravel the dynamic behavior of this SEI layer by quantitatively assessing its thickness, which increases during silicon lithiation and partially decreases during delithiation. Li‐ion solvation effects in the vicinity of the electrode indicate that lithium incorporation in the solid phase is the rate‐determining step of the electrochemical processes during lithiation. The lithiation of the active material also results in the irreversible consumption of a large quantity of hydrogen in the pristine material. Finally, the evolution of the electronic absorption of the electrode material suggests that lithium diffusion is much easier after the first lithiation than in the pristine material. Therefore, in situ Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy performed in a well‐suited configuration efficiently extracts original and quantitative pieces of information on the surface and bulk phenomena affecting Li‐ion electrodes during their operation in realistic conditions.  相似文献

In situ measurements of the growth of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on silicon and the lithiation‐induced volume changes in silicon in lithium ion half‐cells are reported. Thin film amorphous silicon electrodes are fabricated in a configuration that allows unambiguous separation of the total thickness change into contribution from SEI thickness and silicon volume change. Electrodes are assembled into a custom‐designed electrochemical cell, which is integrated with an atomic force microscope. The electrodes are subjected to constant potential lithiation/delithiation at a sequence of potential values and the thickness measurements are made at each potential after equilibrium is reached. Experiments are carried out with two electrolytes—1.2 m lithium hexafluoro‐phosphate (LiPF6) in ethylene carbonate (EC) and 1.2 m LiPF6 in propylene carbonate (PC)—to investigate the influence of electrolyte composition on SEI evolution. It is observed that SEI formation occurs predominantly during the first lithiation and the maximum SEI thickness is ≈17 and 10 nm respectively for EC and PC electrolytes. This study also presents the measured Si expansion ratio versus equilibrium potential and charge capacity versus equilibrium potential; both relationships display hysteresis, which is explained in terms of the stress–potential coupling in silicon.  相似文献

All‐solid‐state thin film lithium batteries are promising devices to power the next generations of autonomous microsystems. Nevertheless, some industrial constraints such as the resistance to reflow soldering (260 °C) and to short‐circuiting necessitate the replacement of the lithium anode. In this study, a 2 V lithium‐ion system based on amorphous silicon nanofilm anodes (50–200 nm thick), a LiPON electrolyte, and a new lithiated titanium oxysulfide cathode Li1.2TiO0.5S2.1 is prepared by sputtering. The determination of the electrochemical behavior of each active material and of whole systems with different configurations allows the highlighting of the particular behavior of the LixSi electrode and the understanding of its consequences on the performance of Li‐ion cells. Lithium‐ion microbatteries processed with industrial tools and embedded in microelectronic packages exhibit particularly high cycle life (?0.006% cycle?1), ultrafast charge (80% capacity in 1 min), and tolerate both short‐circuiting and reflow soldering. Moreover, the perfect stability of the system allows the assignment of some modifications of the voltage curve and a slow and reversible capacity fade occurring in specific conditions, to the formation of Li15Si4 and to the expression of a “memory effect.” These new findings will help to optimize the design of future Li‐ion systems using nanosized silicon anodes.  相似文献

The effect of varying the oxygen content in Sn and SnOx films during potential dependent SnOx conversion reactions and LiySn alloying relevant to Li ion battery anodes is examined. For metallic Sn films, the stresses and stability of the films are controlled by Li alloying reactions. Small, non‐contacting separated Sn particles exhibit higher electrochemical stability relative to more continuous polycrystalline films with larger particles. Metallic Sn particles develop tensile stress during LiySn de‐alloying as porous structures are formed. The amount of stress associated with lithiation and delithiation of well‐separated metallic particles decreases as a porous, easy to lithiate, material forms with cycling. During the lithiation of oxides, conversion reactions (SnOx → Sn) and the lithiation of the metallic Sn control the stress responses of the films, leading to highly potential‐dependent stress development. In particular, evidence for a multistep electrochemical mechanism, in which partially reversible lithiation of the oxygen‐containing phases is conjoined with a fully reversible lithiation of the metallic phases of the Sn, is found. The electrochemical stress analysis provides new insight into these mechanisms and delineates the extent of the reversibility of lithiation and conversion reactions of oxides.  相似文献

The achievement of effective alkaline hydrogen production from water electrolysis is an active field of research. Herein, an integrated electrode composed of crystalline Ni(OH)2 and amorphous NiMoOx is fabricated onto nickel foam (denoted as Ni(OH)2–NiMoOx/NF). The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics are optimized along with phase transformation process during soaking operation. An overpotential of 36 mV to drive 10 mA cm?2 along with the low Tafel slope of 38 mV dec?1 reveals the catalyst's excellent HER performance and a Heyrovsky‐step‐controlled HER mechanism. When assembled into a urea‐assisted water electrolyzer, a voltage of 1.42 V can reach 10 mA cm?2. Further experiments and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results illustrate the synergy effect between crystalline and amorphous areas and the optimized water dissociation step. Crystalline Ni(OH)2 serves as the scissor for water dissociation in an alkali environment to produce H*, while the amorphous NiMoOx layer serves as the location for H* adsorption and H2 desorption.  相似文献

Metal oxides, such as Fe3O4, hold promise for future battery applications due to their abundance, low cost, and opportunity for high lithium storage capacity. In order to better understand the mechanisms of multiple‐electron transfer reactions leading to high capacity in Fe3O4, a comprehensive investigation on local ionic transport and ordering is made by probing site occupancies of anions (O2?) and cations (Li+, Fe3+/Fe2+) using multiple synchrotron X‐ray and electron‐beam techniques, in combination with ab‐initio calculations. Results from this study provide the first experimental evidence that the cubic‐close‐packed (ccp) O‐anion array in Fe3O4 is sustained throughout the lithiation and delithiation processes, thereby enabling multiple lithium intercalation and conversion reactions. Cation displacement/reordering occurs within the ccp O‐anion framework, which leads to a series of phase transformations, starting from the inverse spinel phase and turning into intermediate rock‐salt‐like phases (LixFe3O4; 0 < x < 2), then into a cation‐segregated phase (Li2O?FeO), and finally converting into metallic Fe and Li2O. Subsequent delithiation and lithiation processes involve interconversion between metallic Fe and FeO‐like phases. These results may offer new insights into the structure‐determined ionic transport and electrochemical reactions in metal oxides, and those of other compounds sharing a ccp anion framework, reminiscent of magnetite.  相似文献

Minimizing carrier recombination at contact regions by using carrier‐selective contact materials, instead of heavily doping the silicon, has attracted considerable attention for high‐efficiency, low‐cost crystalline silicon (c‐Si) solar cells. A novel electron‐selective, passivating contact for c‐Si solar cells is presented. Tantalum nitride (TaN x ) thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition are demonstrated to provide excellent electron‐transporting and hole‐blocking properties to the silicon surface, due to their small conduction band offset and large valence band offset. Thin TaNx interlayers provide moderate passivation of the silicon surfaces while simultaneously allowing a low contact resistivity to n‐type silicon. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 20% is demonstrated with c‐Si solar cells featuring a simple full‐area electron‐selective TaNx contact, which significantly improves the fill factor and the open circuit voltage (Voc) and hence provides the higher PCE. The work opens up the possibility of using metal nitrides, instead of metal oxides, as carrier‐selective contacts or electron transport layers for photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

All‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs) with silicon anodes are promising candidates to overcome energy limitations of conventional lithium‐ion batteries. However, silicon undergoes severe volume changes during cycling leading to rapid degradation. In this study, a columnar silicon anode (col‐Si) fabricated by a scalable physical vapor deposition process (PVD) is integrated in all‐solid‐state batteries based on argyrodite‐type electrolyte (Li6PS5Cl, 3 mS cm?1) and Ni‐rich layered oxide cathodes (LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2, NCM) with a high specific capacity (210 mAh g?1). The column structure exhibits a 1D breathing mechanism similar to lithium, which preserves the interface toward the electrolyte. Stable cycling is demonstrated for more than 100 cycles with a high coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.7–99.9% in full cells with industrially relevant areal loadings of 3.5 mAh cm?2, which is the highest value reported so far for ASSB full cells with silicon anodes. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that anode resistance is drastically reduced after first lithiation, which allows high charging currents of 0.9 mA cm?2 at room temperature without the occurrence of dendrites and short circuits. Finally, in‐operando monitoring of pouch cells gave valuable insights into the breathing behavior of the solid‐state cell.  相似文献

In order to assess the contributions of anti‐reflective and passivation effects in microstructured silicon‐based solar light harvesting devices, thin layers of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silicon dioxide (SiO2), silicon‐rich silicon nitride (SiNx), and indium tin oxide (ITO), with a thickness ranging from 45 to 155 nm, are deposited onto regularly packed arrays of silicon micropillars with radial p/n junctions. Atomic layer deposition of Al2O3 yields the best conformal coating over the micropillars. The fact that layers made by low‐pressure chemical vapor deposition (SiO2 and SiNx) are not conformally deposited on the sidewalls of the Si micropillars do not influence the photoelectrical efficiency. For ITO, a change in composition along the micropillar height is measured, which leads to poor performance. For Al2O3, deconvolution of the contributions of passivation and anti‐reflection to the overall efficiency gain exhibits the importance of passivation in micro/nano‐structured Si devices. Al2O3‐coated samples perform the best, for both n/p and p/n configured pillars, yielding (relative) increases of 116% and 37% in efficiency of coated versus non‐coated samples for p‐type and n‐type base micropillar arrays, respectively.  相似文献

Anatase TiO2 is an extensively studied anode material for lithium‐ion batteries because of its superior capability of storing Li+ electrochemically. Here reversible lithium storage of TiO2 is achieved chemically using redox targeting reactions. In the presence of a pair of redox mediators, bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt (CoCp* 2) and cobaltocene (CoCp2) in an electrolyte, TiO2 and its lithiated form Li x TiO2 can be reduced and oxidized by CoCp* 2 and CoCp2 +, respectively, which accompany Li+ insertion and extraction, albeit without attaching the TiO2 onto the electrode. The reversible chemical lithiation/delithiation and the involved phase transitions are unambiguously confirmed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, UV‐vis spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectoscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. A redox flow lithium‐ion battery (RFLB) half‐cell is assembled and evaluated, which is a critical step towards the development of RFLB full cells.  相似文献

The phase behavior and ionic conductivity of tetraethylammonium bis(trifluoromethane‐sulfonyl)imide (Et4NTFSI) salt mixtures with LiTFSI have been examined. In addition, the phase behavior and crystal structure of neat LiTFSI is also reported. Two (1‐x) Et4NTFSI‐(x) LiTFSI (x = 0.50 and 0.67, where x is the mol fraction) mixed‐salt crystalline phases form. Large variations in ionic conductivity are observed; these are attributed to solid‐solid phase transitions of the neat Et4NTFSI salt creating disordered plastic crystalline phases and the formation of a low‐melting eutectic composition between the neat Et4NTFSI salt and the 1/1 Et4NTFSI/LiTFSI (x = 0.50) phase. Although Et4NTFSI and LiTFSI melt at 102 and 234 °C, respectively, the two salts form a eutectic system with a melting temperature of 32 °C. Based upon the findings reported, a new conductivity mechanism is proposed for plastic crystalline salt‐lithium salt electrolytes which is not ascribed to solid‐state diffusion/conduction.  相似文献

While the practical application of electrode materials depends intensively on the Li+ ion storage mechanisms correlating ultimately with the coulombic efficiency, reversible capacity, and morphology variation of electrode material upon cycling, only intercalation‐type electrode materials have proven viable for commercialization up to now. This paper reviews the promising anode materials of metal vanadates (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni, Li) that have high capacity, low cost, and abundant resource, and also discusses the related Li+ ion storage mechanism. It is concluded that most of these (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni) exhibit irreversible redox reactions upon lithiation/delithiation accompanied by large volume expansion, which is not favorable for industrial applications. In particular, Li3VO4 with specific intercalation Li+ ion storage mechanism and compatible merits of safety and energy density exhibits great potential for practical application. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress in Li3VO4 research, including the representative fabrication approaches for advanced morphology and state‐of‐the‐art technologies to boost performance and the morphology variation associated with Li+ ion storage mechanisms. Furthermore, an outlook on where breakthroughs for Li3VO4 may be most likely achieved will be provided.  相似文献

Nickel‐substituted manganese spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is a promising 5 V class positive electrode material for lithium‐ion batteries. As micron‐sized LNMO particles show high rate capability in its two‐phase coexistence regions, the phase transition mechanism is of great interest in understanding the electrode behavior at high rates. Here, the phase transition dynamics of LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is elucidated on high rate charging–discharging using operando time‐resolved X‐ray diffraction (TR‐XRD). The TR‐XRD results indicate the existence of intermediate states, in addition to the thermodynamically stable phases, and it is shown that the origin of such intermediate states is ascribed to the solid‐solution domains at the phase transition front, as supported by the analysis using transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy‐loss spectroscopy. The phase transition pathways dependent on the reaction rate are shown, together with possible explanation for this unique transition behavior.  相似文献

2D vanadium carbide MXene containing surface functional groups (denoted as V2CTx , where Tx are surface functional groups) is synthesized and studied as anode material for Na‐ion batteries. V2CTx anode exhibits reversible charge storage with good cycling stability and high rate capability through electrochemical test. The charge storage mechanism of V2CTx material during Na+ intercalation/deintercalation and the redox reaction of vanadium are studied using a combination of synchrotron based X‐ray diffraction, hard X‐ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), and soft X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS). Experimental evidence of a major contribution of redox reaction of vanadium to the charge storage and the reversible capacity of V2CTx during sodiation/desodiation process are provided through V K ‐edge XANES and V L 2,3‐edge sXAS results. A correlation between the CO32? content and the Na+ intercalation/deintercalation states in the V2CTx electrode observed from C and O K ‐edge in sXAS results implies that some additional charge storage reactions may take place between the Na+‐intercalated V2CTx and the carbonate‐based nonaqueous electrolyte. The results of this study provide valuable information for the further studies on V2CTx as anode material for Na‐ion batteries and capacitors.  相似文献

Over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in both the intensity of research and the performance of crystalline silicon devices which utilize metal compounds to form carrier‐selective heterocontacts. Such heterocontacts are less fundamentally limited and have the potential for lower costs compared to the current industry dominating heavily doped, directly metalized contacts. A low temperature (≤230 °C), TiOx/LiFx/Al electron heterocontact is presented here, which achieves mΩcm2 scale contact resistivities ρc on lowly doped n‐type substrates. As an extreme demonstration of the potential of this heterocontact, it is trialed in a newly developed, high efficiency n‐type solar cell architecture as a partial rear contact (PRC). Despite only contacting ≈1% of the rear surface area, an efficiency of greater than 23% is achieved, setting a new benchmark for n‐type solar cells featuring undoped PRCs and confirming the unusually low ρc of the TiOx/LiFx/Al contact. Finally, in contrast to previous versions of the n‐type undoped PRC cell, the performance of this cell is maintained after annealing at 350–400 °C, suggesting its compatibility with conventional surface passivation activation and sintering steps.  相似文献
