Judicious choice of transport layer in organic–inorganic halide perovskite solar cells can be one of the essential parameters in photovoltaic design and fabrication techniques. This article reports the effect of optically generated dipoles in transport layer on the photovoltaic actions in active layer in perovskite solar cells with the architecture of indium tin oxide (ITO)/TiO x /CH3NH3PbI3–x Cl x /hole transport layer (HTL)/Au. Here, PTB7‐thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene‐alt‐benzodithiophene and P3HT‐poly(3‐hexylthiophene) are separately used as the HTL with significant and negligible photoinduced dipoles, respectively. Electric field‐induced photoluminescence quenching provides the first‐hand evidence to indicate that the photoinduced dipoles are partially aligned in the amorphous PTB7 layer under the influence of device built‐in field. By monitoring the recombination process through magneto‐photocurrent measurements under device operation condition, it is shown that the photoinduced dipoles in PTB7 layer can decrease the recombination of photogenerated carriers in the active layer in perovskite solar cells. Furthermore, the capacitance measurements suggest that the photoinduced dipoles in PTB7 can decrease charge accumulation at the electrode interface. Therefore, the studies indicate the important role of photoinduced dipoles in the HTL on charge recombination dynamics and provide a fundamental insight on how the polarization in transport layer can influence the device performance in perovskite solar cells.  相似文献

The short-circuit current (Jsc) of organic solar cells is defined by the interplay of exciton photogeneration in the active layer, geminate and non-geminate recombination losses and free charge carrier extraction. The method proposed in this work allows the quantification of geminate recombination and the determination of the mobility-lifetime product (µτ) as a single integrated parameter for charge transport and non-geminate recombination. Furthermore, the extraction efficiency is quantified based on the obtained µτ product. Only readily available experimental methods (current-voltage characteristics, external quantum efficiency measurements) are employed, which are coupled with an optical transfer matrix method simulation. The required optical properties of common organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials are provided in this work. The new approach is applied to three OPV systems in inverted or conventional device structures, and the results are juxtaposed against the µτ values obtained by an independent method based on the voltage–capacitance spectroscopy technique. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the new method can accurately predict the optimal active layer thickness.  相似文献

Charge carrier dynamics in organolead iodide perovskites is analyzed by employing time‐resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy with several ps time resolution. The measurements performed by varying photoexcitation intensity over five orders of magnitude enable separation of photoluminescence components related to geminate and nongeminate charge carrier recombination and to address the dynamics of an isolated geminate electron–hole pair. Geminate recombination dominates at low excitation fluence and determines the initial photoluminescence decay. This decay component is remarkably independent of the material structure and experimental conditions. It is demonstrated that dependences of the geminate and nongeminate radiative recombination components on excitation intensity, repetition rate, and temperature, are hardly compatible with carrier trapping and exciton dissociation models. On the basis of semiclassical and quantum mechanical numerical calculation results, it is argued that the fast photoluminescence decay originates from gradual spatial separation of photogenerated weakly bound geminate charge pairs.  相似文献

Nongeminate recombination in organic solar cells based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and C60 is investigated. Two device architectures, the planar heterojunction (PHJ) and the bulk heterojunction (BHJ), are directly compared in view of differences in charge carrier decay dynamics. A combination of transient photovoltage (TPV) experiments, yielding the small perturbation charge carrier lifetime, and charge extraction measurements, providing the charge carrier density is applied. In organic solar cells, charge photogeneration and recombination primarily occur at the donor–acceptor heterointerface. Whereas the BHJ can often be approximated by an effective medium due to rather small scale phase separation, the PHJ has a well defined two‐dimensional heterointerface. In order to study nongeminate recombination dynamics in PHJ devices the charge accumulation at this interface is most relavent. As only the spatially averaged carrier concentration can be determined from extraction techniques, the charge carrier density at the interface nint is derived from the open circuit voltage. Comparing the experimental results with macroscopic device simulation, the differences of recombination and charge carrier densities in CuPc:C60 PHJ and BHJ devices are discussed with respect to the device performance. The open circuit voltage of BHJ is larger than for PHJ at low light intensities, but at 0.3 sun the situation is reversed: here, the PHJ can finally take advantage of its generally longer charge carrier lifetimes, as the active recombination region is smaller.  相似文献

We investigate the role of the spatial absorption profile within bulk heterojunction small molecule solar cells comprising a 50 nm ZnPc:C60 active layer. Exploiting interference effects the absorption profile is varied by both the illumination wavelength and the thickness of an optical spacer layer adjacent to the reflecting electrode. The fill factor under 1 sun illumination is observed to change from 43 to 49% depending on the absorption profile which approximately equals the charge‐carrier generation profile. It is shown by varying the mixing ratio between ZnPc and C60 that the importance of the generation profile is correlated with the imbalance of mobilities. Therefore, it is concluded that non‐geminate recombination is the dominating loss mechanism in these devices. Numerical drift‐diffusion simulations reproduce the experimental observations showing that charge carrier extraction is more efficient if charge carriers are generated close to the contact collecting the less mobile charge carrier type. Furthermore, this effect can explain the dependence of the internal quantum efficiency measured at short circuit on wavelength and implies that the spectral mismatch for a given solar simulator and device depends on the applied voltage.  相似文献

Whereas the role of molecularly mixed domains in organic photovoltaic devices for charge generation is extensively discussed in the literature, the impact on charge recombination and thus fill factor is largely unexplored. Here, a combination of soft X‐ray techniques enables the quantification of phases at multiple length scales to reveal their role regarding charge recombination in a highly efficient solution processed small molecule system 7,7′‐(4,4‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐4H‐silolo[3,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)bis(6‐fluoro‐4‐(5′‐hexyl‐[2,2′‐bithiophen]‐5‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole) (p‐DTS(FBTTh2)2) . A quantitative (linear) relationship between the average composition variations and the device fill‐factor is observed. The results establish the complex interrelationship between average phase purity, domain size, and structural order and highlight the requirement of achieving sufficient phase purities to diminish bimolecular and geminate recombination in solution processed small molecule solar cells.  相似文献

Charge transport and recombination are studied for organic solar cells fabricated using blends of polymer poly[(4,4′‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]silole)‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(4,7‐bis(2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole)‐5,5′‐diyl] (Si‐PCPDTBT) with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (mono‐PCBM) and the bis‐adduct analogue of mono‐PCBM (bis‐PCBM). The photocurrent of Si‐PCPDTBT:bis‐PCBM devices shows a strong square root dependence on the effective applied voltage. From the relationship between the photocurrent and the light intensity, we found that the square‐root dependence of the photocurrent is governed by the mobility‐lifetime (μτ) product of charge carriers while space‐charge field effects are insignificant. The fill factor (FF) and short circuit current density (Jsc) of bis‐PCBM solar cells show a considerable increase with temperature as compared to mono‐PCBM solar cells. SCLC analysis of single carrier devices proofs that the mobility of both electrons and holes is significantly lowered when replacing mono‐PCBM with bis‐PCBM. The increased recombination in Si‐PCPDTBT:bis‐PCBM solar cells is therefore attributed to the low carrier mobilities, as the transient photovoltage measurements show that the carrier lifetime of devices are not significantly altered by using bis‐PCBM instead of mono‐PCBM.  相似文献

The charge generation and recombination dynamics in polymer/polymer blend solar cells composed of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT, electron donor) and poly[2,7‐(9,9‐didodecylfluorene)‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐bis(2‐thienyl)‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)] (PF12TBT, electron acceptor) are studied by transient absorption measurements. In the unannealed blend film, charge carriers are efficiently generated from polymer excitons, but some of them recombine geminately. In the blend film annealed at 160 °C, on the other hand, the geminate recombination loss is suppressed and hence free carrier generation efficiency increases up to 74%. These findings suggest that P3HT and PF12TBT are intermixed within a few nanometers, resulting in impure PF12TBT and disordered P3HT domains. The geminate recombination is likely due to charge carriers generated on isolated polymer chains in the matrix of the other polymer and at the domain interface with disordered P3HT. The undesired charge loss by geminate recombination is reduced by both the purification of the PF12TBT‐rich domain and crystallization of the P3HT chains. These results show that efficient free carrier generation is not inherent to the polymer/fullerene domain interface, but is possible with polymer/polymer systems composed of crystalline donor and amorphous acceptor polymers, opening up a new potential method for the improvement of solar cell materials.  相似文献

Reaching device efficiencies that can rival those of polymer‐fullerene Bulk Heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells (>10%) remains challenging with the “All‐Small‐Molecule” (All‐SM) approach, in part because of (i) the morphological limitations that prevail in the absence of polymer and (ii) the difficulty to raise and balance out carrier mobilities across the active layer. In this report, the authors show that blends of the SM donor DR3TBDTT (DR3) and the nonfullerene SM acceptor O‐IDTBR are conducive to “All‐SM” BHJ solar cells with high open‐circuit voltages (VOC) >1.1 V and PCEs as high as 6.4% (avg. 6.1%) when the active layers are subjected to a post‐processing solvent vapor‐annealing (SVA) step with dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). Combining electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analyses and systematic carrier recombination examinations, the authors show that SVA treatments with DMDS play a determining role in improving charge transport and reducing non‐geminate recombination for the DR3:O‐IDTBR system. Correlating the experimental results and device simulations, it is found that substantially higher BHJ solar cell efficiencies of >12% can be achieved if the IQE and carrier mobilities of the active layer are increased to >85% and >10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, while suppressing the recombination rate constant k to <10?12 cm3 s?1.  相似文献

The quest for new materials is one of the main factors propelling recent advances in organic photovoltaics. Star‐shaped small molecules (SSMs) have been proven promising candidates as perspective donor material due to the increase in numbers of excitation pathways caused by the degeneracy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level. In order to unravel the pathways of the initial photon‐to‐charge conversion, the photovoltaic blends based on three different SSMs with a generic structure of N(phenylene‐nthiophene‐dicyanovinyl‐alkyl)3 (n = 1–3), and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptor are investigated by ultrafast photoinduced absorption spectroscopy assisted by density functional theory calculations. It is shown that both electron transfer from SSMs to PC71BM and hole transfer from PC71BM to SSMs are equally significant for generation of long‐lived charges. In contrast, intramolecular (intra‐SSM) charge separation results in geminate recombination and therefore constitutes a loss channel. Overall, up to 60% of long‐lived separated charges are generated at the optimal PC71BM concentrations. The obtained results suggest that further improvement of the SSM‐based solar cells is feasible via optimization of blend morphology and by suppressing the intra‐SSM recombination channel.  相似文献

We report on the effects of screening of the electric field by doping‐induced mobile charges on photocurrent collection in operational organic solar cells. Charge transport and recombination were studied using double injection (DI) and charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (CELIV) transient techniques in bulk‐heterojunction solar cells made from acceptor‐donor blends of poly(3‐n‐hexylthiophene):phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC60BM). It is shown that the screening of the built‐in field in operational solar cells can be controlled by an external voltage while the influence on charge transport and recombination is measured. An analytical theory to extract the bimolecular recombination coefficient as a function of electric field from the injection current is also reported. The results demonstrate that the suppressed (non‐Langevin) bimolecular recombination rate and charge collection are not strongly affected by native doping levels in this materials combination. Hence, it is not necessary to reduce the level of doping further to improve the device performance of P3HT‐based solar cells.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that a combination of microsecond transient photocurrent measurements and film morphology characterization can be used to identify a charge‐carrier blocking layer within polymer:fullerene bulk‐heterojunction solar cells. Solution‐processed molybdenum oxide (s‐MoOx) interlayers are used to control the morphology of the bulk‐heterojunction. By selecting either a low‐ or high‐temperature annealing (70 °C or 150 °C) for the s‐MoOx layer, a well‐performing device is fabricated with an ideally interconnected, high‐efficiency morphology, or a device is fabricated in which the fullerene phase segregates near the hole extracting contact preventing efficient charge extraction. By probing the photocurrent dynamics of these two contrasting model systems as a function of excitation voltage and light intensity, the optoelectronic responses of the solar cells are correlated with the vertical phase composition of the polymer:fullerene active layer, which is known from dynamic secondary‐ion mass spectroscopy (DSIMS). Numerical simulations are used to verify and understand the experimental results. The result is a method to detect poor morphologies in operating organic solar cells.  相似文献

Organic solar cells that use only fullerenes as the photoactive material exhibit poor exciton‐to‐charge conversion efficiencies, resulting in low internal quantum efficiencies (IQE). However, the IQE can be greatly improved, when copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) is used as a carrier‐selective interlayer between the phenyl‐C70‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) layer and the anode. Efficiencies of ≈5.4% have recently been reported for optimized CuSCN:PC70BM (1:3)‐mesostructured heterojunctions, yet the reasons causing the efficiency boost remain unclear. Here, transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is used to demonstrate that CuSCN does not only act as a carrier‐selective electrode layer, but also facilitates fullerene exciton dissociation and hole transfer at the interface with PC70BM. While intrinsic charge generation in neat PC70BM films proceeds with low yield, hybrid films exhibit much improved exciton dissociation due to the presence of abundant interfaces. Triplet generation with a rate proportional to the product of singlet and charge concentrations is observed in neat PC70BM films, implying a charge–singlet spin exchange mechanism, while in hybrid films, this mechanism is absent and triplet formation is a consequence of nongeminate recombination of free charges. At low carrier concentrations, the fraction of charges outweighs the population of triplets, leading to respectable device efficiencies under one sun illumination.  相似文献

Interface recombination was studied in colloidal quantum dot photovoltaics. Optimization of the TiO2‐PbS interface culminated in the introduction of a thin ZnO buffer layer deposited with atomic layer deposition. Transient photovoltage measurements indicated a nearly two‐fold decrease in the recombination rate around 1 sun operating conditions. Improvement to the recombination rate led to a device architecture with superior open circuit voltage (VOC) and photocurrent extraction. Overall a 10% improvement in device efficiency was achieved with Voc enhancements up to 50 mV being realized.  相似文献

The use of fullerenes with two or more adducts as acceptors has been recently shown to enhance the performance of bulk‐heterojunction solar cells using poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the donor. The enhancement is caused by a substantial increase in the open‐circuit voltage due to a rise in the fullerene lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level when going from monoadducts to multiadducts. While the increase in the open‐circuit voltage is obtained with many different polymers, most polymers other than P3HT show a substantially reduced photocurrent when blended with fullerene multiadducts like bis‐PCBM (bis adduct of Phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester) or the indene C60 bis‐adduct ICBA. Here we investigate the reasons for this decrease in photocurrent. We find that it can be attributed partly to a loss in charge generation efficiency that may be related to the LUMO‐LUMO and HOMO‐HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) offsets at the donor‐acceptor heterojunction, and partly to reduced charge carrier collection efficiencies. We show that the P3HT exhibits efficient collection due to high hole and electron mobilities with mono‐ and multiadduct fullerenes. In contrast the less crystalline polymer Poly[[9‐(1‐octylnonyl)‐9H‐carbazole‐2,7‐diyl]‐2,5‐thiophenediyl‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl‐2,5‐thiophenediyl (PCDTBT) shows inefficient charge carrier collection, assigned to low hole mobility in the polymer and low electron mobility when blended with multiadduct fullerenes.  相似文献

Solution‐processable small molecule (SM) donors are promising alternatives to their polymer counterparts in bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. While SM donors with favorable spectral absorption, self‐assembly patterns, optimum thin‐film morphologies, and high carrier mobilities in optimized donor–acceptor blends are required to further BHJ device efficiencies, material structure governs each one of those attributes. As a result, the rational design of SM donors with gradually improved BHJ solar cell efficiencies must concurrently address: (i) bandgap tuning and optimization of spectral absorption (inherent to the SM main chain) and (ii) pendant‐group substitution promoting structural order and mediating morphological effects. In this paper, the rational pendant‐group substitution in benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene–6,7‐difluoroquinoxaline SMs is shown to be an effective approach to narrowing the optical gap (Eopt) of the SM donors ( SM1 and SM2 ), without altering their propensity to order and form favorable thin‐film BHJ morphologies with PC71BM. Systematic device examinations show that power conversion efficiencies >8% and open‐circuit voltages (VOC) nearing 1 V can be achieved with the narrow‐gap SM donor analog ( SM2 , Eopt = 1.6 eV) and that charge transport in optimized BHJ solar cells proceeds with minimal, nearly trap‐free recombination. Detailed device simulations, light intensity dependence, and transient photocurrent analyses emphasize how carrier recombination impacts BHJ device performance upon optimization of active layer thickness and morphology.  相似文献

It is important to accurately measure the charge carrier lifetime, a crucial parameter that influences the collection efficiency in organic solar cells. Five transient and small perturbation experimental techniques that measure charge carrier lifetime are applied to a device composed of the polymer PDTSiTTz blended with the fullerene PCBM: time‐resolved charge extraction (TRCE), transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), photoinduced charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo‐CELIV), transient photovoltage, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The motivation is to perform a comprehensive comparison of several different lifetime measurement techniques on the same device in order to assess their relative accuracy, applicability to operational devices, and utility in data analysis. The techniques all produce similar charge carrier lifetimes at high charge densities, despite previous suggestions that transient methods are less accurate than small perturbation ones. At lower charge densities an increase in the apparent reaction order is observed. This may be related to surface recombination at the contacts beginning to dominate, or an inhomogeneous charge distribution. A combination of TAS and TRCE appears suitable. TAS enables the investigation of recombination mechanisms at early times since it is not limited by RC (resistance‐capacitance product) or charge extraction losses. Conversely, TRCE is useful particularly at low densities when other mechanisms, such as surface recombination, may occur.  相似文献

Length of the terminal alkyl chains at dicyanovinyl (DCV) groups of two dithienosilole (DTS) containing small molecules ( DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 and DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 ) is investigated to evaluate how this affects the molecular solubility and blend morphology as well as their performance in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs). While the DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 (a solubility of 5 mg mL?1) system exhibits both high short circuit current density (J sc) and high fill factor, the DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 (a solubility of 24 mg mL?1) system in contrast suffers from a poor blend morphology as examined by atomic force morphology and grazing incidence X‐ray scattering measurements, which limit the photovoltaic properties. The charge generation, transport, and recombination dynamics associated with the limited device performance are investigated for both systems. Nongeminate recombination losses in DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 system are demonstrated to be significant by combining space charge limited current analysis and light intensity dependence of current–voltage characteristics in combination with photogenerated charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage and transient photovoltage measurements. DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 in contrast performs nearly ideal with no evidence of nongeminate recombination, space charge effects, or mobility limitation. These results demonstrate the importance of alkyl chain engineering for solution‐processed OSCs based on small molecules as an essential design tool to overcome transport limitations.  相似文献

Aimed at achieving ideal morphology, illuminating morphology–performance relationship, and further improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary polymer solar cells (TSCs), a ternary system is designed based on PTB7‐Th:PffBT4T‐2OD:PC71BM in this work. The PffBT4T‐2OD owns large absorption cross section, proper energy levels, and good crystallinity, which enhances exciton generation, charge dissociation and transport and suppresses charge recombination, thus remarkably increasing the short‐circuit current density (J sc) and fill factor (FF). Finally, a notable PCE of 10.72% is obtained for the TSCs with 15% weight ratio of PffBT4T‐2OD. As for the working mechanism, it confirmed the energy transfer from PffBT4T‐2OD to PTB7‐Th, which contributes to the improved exciton generation. And morphology characterization indicates that the devices with 15% PffBT4T‐2OD possess both appropriate domain size (25 nm) and enhanced domain purity. Under this condition, it affords numerous D/A interface for exciton dissociation and good bicontinuous nanostructure for charge transport simultaneously. As a result, the device with 15% PffBT4T‐2OD exhibits improved exciton generation, enhanced charge dissociation possibility, elevated hole mobility and inhibited charge recombination, leading to elevated J sc (19.02 mA cm?2) and FF (72.62%) simultaneously. This work indicates that morphology optimization as well as energy transfer plays a significant role in improving TSC performance.  相似文献

Poly(benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene–alt–thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione) (PBDTTPD) polymer donors with linear side‐chains yield bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of about 4% with phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor, while a PBDTTPD polymer with a combination of branched and linear substituents yields a doubling of the PCE to 8%. Using transient optical spectroscopy it is shown that while the exciton dissociation and ultrafast charge generation steps are not strongly affected by the side chain modifications, the polymer with branched side chains exhibits a decreased rate of nongeminate recombination and a lower fraction of sub‐nanosecond geminate recombination. In turn the yield of long‐lived charge carriers increases, resulting in a 33% increase in short circuit current (J sc). In parallel, the two polymers show distinct grazing incidence X‐ray scattering spectra indicative of the presence of stacks with different orientation patterns in optimized thin‐film BHJ devices. Independent of the packing pattern the spectroscopic data also reveals the existence of polymer aggregates in the pristine polymer films as well as in both blends which trap excitons and hinder their dissociation.  相似文献
