In this study we investigated the environmental regulation of daily reproductive activity of guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We observed male guppy reproductive behaviour for 17 days over three time periods (dawn, noon, and dusk) while recording natural variation in water temperature and light level. Water temperatures recorded during the experiments were highly variable (up to 7 °C per day), and there was a recurring pattern in daily variation for both light and temperature. Levels of activity were highest at dawn and similarly low during noon and dusk, but reproductive behaviour was recorded throughout the day. Mixed‐effects models indicate that light and temperature affect reproductive behaviour differently at different times of the day, and can also have opposing effects. We suggest that the environmental heterogeneity of streams in Trinidad has led to a broad thermal tolerance, and has contributed to the high level of phenotypic plasticity in the guppy and its success as an invasive species. Furthermore, our results show that daily variation in temperature and its interaction with light should be considered in future studies of guppy reproductive behaviour. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 511–520.  相似文献

1. In six foals and their mothers (of Standard breed) diurnal changes in the haemoglobin level, red blood cell number and mean corpuscular haemoglobin during the first 13 weeks of foal life were studied. 2. Studies begun when a foal reached 7 days of age and were repeated every two weeks till 13 weeks of foal life. Blood was taken every 6 hr in foals and every 4 hr in mares. 3. No diurnal rhythmicity in parameters studied either in foals or in mares was found. 4. Decrease of haemoglobin level in lactating mares (14.0-12.5 g/100 ml) without changes in red blood cell number were observed. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin changed distinctly from one study day to another. 5. In foals were stated: significantly higher haemoglobin level and erythrocyte number and lower mean corpuscular haemoglobin than in mares.  相似文献

Artificial night lighting is expanding globally, but its ecological consequences remain little understood. Animals often use changes in day length as a cue to time seasonal behaviour. Artificial night lighting may influence the perception of day length, and may thus affect both circadian and circannual rhythms. Over a 3.5 month period, from winter to breeding, we recorded daily singing activity of six common songbird species in 12 woodland sites, half of which were affected by street lighting. We previously reported on analyses suggesting that artificial night lighting affects the daily timing of singing in five species. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether the presence of artificial night lighting is also associated with the seasonal occurrence of dawn and dusk singing. We found that in four species dawn and dusk singing developed earlier in the year at sites exposed to light pollution. We also examined the effects of weather conditions and found that rain and low temperatures negatively affected the occurrence of dawn and dusk singing. Our results support the hypothesis that artificial night lighting alters natural seasonal rhythms, independently of other effects of urbanization. The fitness consequences of the observed changes in seasonal timing of behaviour remain unknown.  相似文献

Males of many songbird species have peaks of singing activity at dawn and dusk. Singing during those twilight periods can function in territory proclamation, and males are suggested to adjust song output to the level of intruder pressure. We used song playback during the breeding season to simulate intrusions into territories of male Winter Wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes) shortly after dawn. We then compared male singing behaviour during the dawn and dusk chorus before and 1 day after the simulated intrusion. One day after the playback, male Wrens increased their song output before sunrise, which confirms our results from a previous study on dawn singing in autumn territories. At dusk, on the evening following the playback, males slightly increased song output after sunset, but singing activity at dusk was generally very low. We found no significant changes of song output after sunrise, before sunset, and between 2 days of control without playback. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that dawn and dusk singing is important for territory defence in spring. Unlike in autumn, however, increased singing in spring at dawn and dusk could also serve to defend other resources such as fertile mates or to strengthen the pair bond after a territorial challenge. In comparison with the results on autumnal singing, male Wrens started singing earlier at dawn during the breeding season, and they generally sang more songs at dawn and immediately after playback. The increase in absolute numbers of songs sung in the morning after playback seemed greater in spring than in autumn; however, the proportional increase relative to overall song output was similar in both seasons.  相似文献

Roaring was recorded during 15-min intervals for 55 days from April 29 to July 14, 1981 in the area around Bermuda Landing, Belize. Roaring profiles were compiled to represent four three-week periods in which roaring was graphed against the time of day. Rates of roaring were also calculated for three troops. Results indicate a gradual change in the daily profile of roaring from dry to rainy season. The marked bimodality of roaring at dawn and dusk in the dry season changed to a more dampened bimodality with reduced dawn and dusk peaks and more roaring during the midday in the rainy season. This seems related to the decreased hours of sun and the amount of rain during the wet season. Additionally, literature on monkeys with long range vocalizations suggests that bimodal peaks in calling may be more prevalent in species which display territorial defense.  相似文献

Thyroid hormones, insulin growth factor I (IGF-I) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) represent important hormonal and metabolic factors associated with perinatal growth and maturation. Their action could be influenced by the type of parturition and the health status of the foal and therefore the aim of this work is to evaluate their plasma concentrations in newborn foals during the first 2 wks of life. Three groups of subjects were enrolled: 15 healthy foals born by spontaneous parturition, 24 healthy foals born by induced parturition and 26 pathologic foals. From each of the healthy foals, blood was collected at 10, 20 and 30 minutes, 3 and 12 hours from birth, daily from Day 1 to Day 7, and at Day 10 and 14 of life. In pathologic foals samples were collected twice a day from the day of admission at the hospital until the day of discharge or death. Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and IGF-I were analyzed by radioimmunoassay and NEFA by enzymatic-colorimetric methods. In all the three groups a declining trend of T3 and T4 plasma concentrations was detectable, with lower levels in the pathologic group compared to healthy foals. Spontaneous foals showed higher levels of T3 at 7 d compared to induced foals, while T4 levels were higher in spontaneous vs. induced foals before 6 h of life, at three and seven days. IGF-I showed increasing plasma concentrations in all three considered groups. No differences were found between healthy and pathologic foals. NEFA in spontaneous and induced healthy foals showed a declining trend with higher levels during the first hours of life. Pathologic foals presented higher levels compared to spontaneous foals only at 24 h and 10 d. These data suggest that the type of foaling could influence the reference ranges for thyroid hormones. Moreover, pathologic foals showed some hormonal and metabolic differences related to their health status. Above all changes of thyroid hormones levels, early in postnatal life, could be a cause, and not only a consequence, of the diseased condition of these foals.  相似文献

The authors investigated the general activity and nest occupation patterns of fox squirrels in a natural setting using temperature-sensitive data loggers that measure activity as changes in the microenvironment of the animal. Data were obtained from 25 distinct preparations, upon 14 unique squirrels, totaling 1385 recording days. The animals were clearly diurnal, with a predominantly unimodal activity pattern, although individual squirrels occasionally exhibited bimodal patterns, particularly in the spring and summer. Even during the short days of winter (9 hours of light), the squirrels typically left the nest after dawn and returned before dusk, spending only about 7 hours out of the nest each day. Although the duration of the daily active phase did not change with the seasons, the squirrels exited the nest earlier in the day when the days became longer in the summer and exited the nest later in the day when the days became shorter in the winter, thus tracking dawn along the seasons. During the few hours spent outside the nest each day, fox squirrels seemed to spend most of the time sitting or lying. These findings suggest that fox squirrels may have adopted a slow life history strategy that involves long periods of rest on trees and short periods of ground activity each day.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of auricular temperature (AT) recording in the determination of body temperature as well as rectal temperature (RT). For this purpose we compared RT and AT in five clinically healthy horses. Data collections were performed every 3 h over 2 different 24 h photoperiods, 13/11 light/dark cycle and constant darkness. Repeated measures multifactor analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to determine a statistical significant effect of time of day, side of temperature collection and photoperiods on AT and RT. Our finding showed a significant effect of time of day on the temperature values recorded and an influence of side of temperature collection. RT values were higher of about 4 °C than the AT values, and the pattern of the two temperatures was not comparable. A daily rhythmicity of rectal temperature was observed. Auricular temperature no showed daily rhythmicity in both periods of monitoring. On the basis of these findings AT does not reflect body temperature as well as RT in horse.  相似文献

Rectal temperature of 10 female adult horses was recorded every 2 h for 10 consecutive days under a natural winter photoperiod (9 h of light and 15 h of darkness per day). A robust daily rhythm of body temperature was observed in all animals. The rhythm had a mean level of 38.3°C and a range of excursion of 1.0°C. Temperature started its daily ascent at dawn each day and reached a maximum 14 hours later. Body temperature of 5 of the horses was studied for 10 more days under constant illumination. The rhythm persisted under this condition, although with a slightly longer period of 24.2 h, which confirms the endogenous nature of the rhythm. Despite the fact that the body size of the horse is several orders of magnitude greater than that of rodents, the various parameters of the body temperature rhythm of the horse are similar to those of several species of rodents previously studied.  相似文献

1. The diurnal changes in the levels of lactic (LA) and pyruvic (PA) acids and values of pH were studied in standard-bred mares and their foals, for 13 weeks of foal life, throughout 2 years. 2. In the LA, PA levels and pH values no diurnal rhythm was stated in lactating mares during study periods. 5. In foals the diurnal rhythm in LA and PA occurred in the 3rd month of their life, with the acrophase at night hours. 6. The significant correlations between foal and their mother metabolites studied were observed. 7. In a dominance-structured flock, social status may determinepriority of access to food. Birds of low social status mayperceive present and future access to food as less predictable,and so have a higher risk of starvation, than birds of highsocial rank. Theoretical models predict that subordinate birdsshould carry larger fat reserves and incur higher mass-dependentcosts than dominants. However, empirical tests of the assumptionsof these models are still scarce and controversial. We investigatedthe effect of dominance rank on daily mass gain under conditionsof fluctuating food availability in a laboratory experimentusing four flocks of four coal tits (Parus ater) each. Thesame amount of food was delivered in two treatments, but inone treatment the food was offered at a constant rate betweendays (fixed treatment), while in the other treatment the dailyfood supply varied in an unpredictable sequence between days(variable treatment). All birds showed greater variance inbody mass in the variable treatment than in the fixed treatment.Body mass within birds showed the same variability at dawn thanat dusk in the fixed treatment, but less variability at dawnthan at dusk in the variable treatment. This may be a mechanismto reduce the immediate risk of starvation at the beginningof the day, when fat reserves are at their lowest and the aggressionbetween flock members when feeding highest. Subordinate birdswere excluded from the feeders by dominants more often in theearly morning than in the rest of the day, and they showedmore variability in daily mass gain and body mass at dawn thandominant birds. These results support the hypothesis that subordinatebirds have a reduced probability of surviving when food availabilitychanges unexpectedly compared to dominants.  相似文献

The light preferences of fruit flies were tested by 2 different means. First, flies were allowed to choose between different illuminations, and their favorite resting, grooming, and feeding places were determined with an infrared-sensitive camera. Second, the activity levels of the animals during their main daily activity period were determined photoelectrically (via infrared light beams) under different light intensities. Both methods revealed that the flies prefer dim light. They rested, groomed, and fed preferentially in places with a light intensity between 5 and 10 lux, and they showed the highest activity level when the light intensity during the day was kept at 10 lux. Furthermore, when dawn and dusk were simulated by logarithmically increasing/decreasing the light intensity during a 1.5-h interval, the flies' activity maxima occurred at about 7.5 lux during early dawn and late dusk. The results suggest that fruit flies time their clocks by early dawn and late dusk and avoid bright light during the day.  相似文献

Pipistrellus pipistrellus emerge from their nursery roosts in north-east Scotland about 35 minutes after sunset, at light intensities of between 15 and 35 lux. Cloud cover, windspeed, ambient temperature, rain, light mist and moonlight have no apparent effect on the time or pattern of emergence. Throughout pregnancy and lactation, emergence lasts for about an hour. After weaning, when the adult females have left the roost, their young take about 40 minutes to emerge. The average rate of initial emergence is proportional to colony size, and the maximum rate of emergence occurs half way through the exodus.
During pregnancy in May and June most bats leave the roost once each night soon after dusk and return between midnight and dawn. After parturition in late June the activity pattern becomes bimodal and the numbers of bats outside the roost show peaks after dusk and immediately before dawn. There is intermittent activity in the vicinity of the roost all night and bats make two or three flights each night. After weaning in August the activity pattern gradually ceases to be bimodal, and the number of flights per bat falls to between one and two. The average time spent outside the roost varies between 2–5 and 5 hours during the summer. The recorded activity patterns of night-flying insects are all bimodal, with peaks after dusk and before dawn, corresponding with the maximum number of bats outside the roost during lactation.  相似文献

The rate of disappearance of Evans blue dye from the blood after an intravenous injection was studied in young foals, between 4 and 105 days of age. This was found to be age dependant, especially during the first month, the initial dye disappearance being much faster than in the adult horse. This would mean an overestimation of plasma volume, using the single sampling technique, of about 5% during the first day of life, i.e. negligible from a practical point of view considering the standard error of estimation. The effect of exercise on the venous haematocrit was studied, too, in foals less than 3 months of age. There was a significant difference between mean values before and after exercise, and this difference seemed to increase with age, indicating an increasing erythrocytestoring capacity of the spleen. This means that even in young foals, the splenic function should be considered when determining the total blood volume from the plasma volume and the venous haematocrit.  相似文献

Two groups of 12 adult Ile-de-France rams were exposed to artificial 6-month light cycles in which daily illumination was provided in one or two photofractions. In Group I, daylength increased linearly from 8 to 16 h in 3 months and decreased similarly from 16 to 8 h. The daily increment or decrement (5.33 min/day) was constant. In Group II, 8 h of light were given in two parts: the main one, 7 h, began at the time of dawn in Group I and an additional 1 h light pulse was coincident with the last hour of the former group. The onset of the pulse changed therefore each day and the interval between dawn of the first block and dusk of the second block of light increased from 8 to 16 h in 3 months and declined from 16 to 8 h the next 3 months. Testicular weight was estimated by an orchidometer every 2 weeks for 2 (N = 12/group) or 3 consecutive light cycles (N = 6/group). The testicular weight variations were identical in both groups. In the 6 rams of each group studied during 3 light cycles, variations of testicular weight were submitted to an harmonic regression analysis according to time and the computed values for the mean, amplitude, period and phase were, respectively, 260 g, 66 g, 185 days and 120 days in Group I and 262 g, 65 g, 181 days and 111 days in Group II. A key hypothesis explaining the existence of dawn and dusk choruses in acoustically communicating animals centers on the need to advertise continued territorial occupancy after and before a period of nocturnal inactivity. If this hypothesis is correct, it follows that similar dawn and dusk choruses should occur in territorial animals exploiting other signal modalities. Adult male Anolis lizards defend territories by using elaborate head-bobbing displays and extensions of a throat fan or dewlap. Males are inactive at night and return to their territories at dawn, remaining there until dusk. I quantified the production of visual displays as a function of time of day for four species on the island of Jamaica: Anolis lineatopus, Anolis sagrei, Anolis grahami, and Anolis opalinus. All exhibited dawn and/or dusk peaks in display behavior. These patterns have remarkable parallels with the dawn and dusk choruses reported for many acoustically communicating animals.  相似文献

Daily or circadian oscillation has been documented in a variety of physiological and behavioral processes. Although individual variables have been studied in great detail, very few studies have been conducted on the temporal relationships between the rhythms of different variables. It is not known whether the circadian pacemaker generates each and every rhythm individually or whether most rhythms are simply derived from a few clock-controlled rhythms. As a first step in elucidating this issue, 21 physiological variables were recorded simultaneously in horse and sheep. The results indicated that, in both species, different variables exhibit different degrees of daily rhythmicity and reach their daily peaks at different times of the day. The variables exhibiting strongest rhythmicity were locomotor activity, rectal temperature, and plasma concentrations of melatonin and glucose. Comparison of rhythmicity and acrophase in the various rhythms allowed inferences to be made about mechanisms of causation.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and diel migratory behaviour of Pseudodiaptomus hessei in a freshwater lake is described. All stages showed a pronounced diel migration. During daylight naupliar and copepodite instars were almost exclusively benthic in shallow areas (<10m). Copepodite V and adult stages were predominantly benthic even at 40 m. The diurnal vertical distribution pattern implies age-related differences in photosensitivity and a possible depth-regulatory mechanism, based on the existence of differential photosensitivity, is offered to account for day-depth control. Nocturnal vertical distribution, studied approximately fortnightly during 1970–71, showed no clear seasonal variation. Variations in pattern, most obvious in adult instars, correlated with prevalent lunar conditions. Nocturnal or midnight sinking was evident, particularly in post-naupliar stages. Dusk rise and dawn descent were performed at very low light intensities and paralleled changes in light penetration. Dawn descent was less rapid than the dusk rise. An ephemeral dawn rise was sometimes observed but was not a consistent feature of all stages. An endogenous rhythm of locomotor activity was recorded under laboratory conditions. Activity was low during daylight, increased sharply at dusk and then decreased through the night to reach daytime levels at dawn. The stimulus provided by changes in light intensity and/or endogenous activity changes can account for the dusk and dawn movements of P. hessei but a definitive identification of the direct migratory stimulus is not possible. Attention is called to a closer examination of the role of endogenous activity rhythms in vertical migratory behaviour. The possible adaptive value of vertical migration to P. hessei is examined briefly.  相似文献

2007年3月6日~4月25日,采用焦点取样和瞬时扫描取样相结合的方法对3只幼龄藏狐(Vulpesferrilata)的昼间行为进行观察记录,并分析其节律及组成.结果表明,休息行为是幼龄藏狐日常活动的主要组成部分,其次为捕食行为和嬉戏行为.幼龄藏狐以晨昏活动为主,主要活动时间集中在8:00~9:00时和16:00~19:00时,其余时间以休息为主.成体藏狐出现后,幼龄藏狐嬉戏行为增加,而休息行为减少,并伴随有奔跑和亲昵行为.  相似文献
