Diets of the syntopic caecilian amphibians Boulengerula boulengeri and Scolecomorphus vittatus were studied from gut content analyses of 108 specimens collected from Nilo Forest Reserve, East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania. Head length and width relative to body length is greater in male B. boulengeri than in females, but no such dimorphism is apparent in S. vittatus . No differences, other than females consuming disproportionately more ants and invertebrate eggs and fewer termites than males, occur in the diets of B. boulengeri . The gut contents of S. vittatus are dominated by large, surface-active earthworms, in contrast to those of B. boulengeri which contained smaller, endogeic earthworms and a much greater number and diversity of soil arthropods (particularly termites, ants and Diptera larvae). These dietary characteristics underline differences in microhabitat use between these caecilian species and thus corroborate a previously proposed hypothesis of niche separation. The ecological impact of caecilians and other limbless endogeic vertebrates is little studied and poorly known. Approximations based on current knowledge are not clear, but are interpreted as indicating that predation by caecilians is unlikely to be among the most important factors influencing population densities of soil-dwelling termites and perhaps also ants: two groups recognized as soil ecosystem engineers.  相似文献

Material ascribed to the genus Callulina from north‐east Tanzania and south‐east Kenya is assessed. Three new species of Callulina are described from the North ( Callulina laphami sp. nov. ) and South ( Callulina shengena sp. nov. and Callulina stanleyi sp. nov. ) Pare Mountains in Tanzania. The species are diagnosed based on morphological, acoustic, and molecular data. A new key to the species of Callulina is provided. Based on an interpretation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list, we suggest that the three species will qualify as critically endangered, because of their small distributions and the ongoing threat to their habitat. We reveal the high local endemism of Callulina in the northern part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, with each species restricted to no more than one mountain (fragment) block. This high local endemism in Callulina is probably widespread across the Eastern Arc, raising further conservation concern for this group of amphibians. Based on new molecular phylogenetic data for Callulina, we discuss biogeographical relationships among north‐east Tanzanian mountains, and evolutionary patterns in Eastern Arc breviciptids. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 496–514.  相似文献

The genus Aerotegmina comprises a group of African canopy-dwelling, predatory bushcrickets (katydids) that is known for its inflated tegmina and the unusually loud and low-frequency calling song of its type species. Here, we describe the songs of another two species of the genus which are much larger than the type species and have an even lower peak frequency. In addition, small and large species differ in song structure. While the type species and closely related forms have a broad banded, multi-peak song with strong components in the audio and ultrasonic range, the species treated here have an extremely narrow banded, resonant song with a carrier frequency of 2 kHz. With Q-values above 100 these sounds belong to the purest songs ever recorded in Orthoptera. Besides describing songs, stridulatory organs and a new species we discuss the possible functions of the song type. A key to the species of Aerotegmina is provided.  相似文献

The morphology of both the main nasal cavity and the vomeronasal organ differs among species representing six families of caecilians. The main nasal cavity is either divided or undivided. The vomeronasal organ differs in position (mediolateral, lateral), size (large vomeronasal organ in the aquatic species), and shape (mediolateral extension, vomeronasal organ with a lateral rostral projection). The great amount of respiratory epithelium of the main nasal cavity, the large vomeronasal organ, and its extensive innervation in typhlonectids may reflect both phylogeny and habitat adaptation, for these taxa are secondarily aquatic or semiaquatic and have several concomitant morphological and physiological modifications. The vomeronasal organ is associated with the caecilian tentacle as the tentacular ducts open into it. This association is further evidence for the involvement of the caecilian tentacle in vomeronasal chemoperception and may represent the mechanism by which these animals smell though the main nasal cavity is closed during burrowing or swimming. Labelings of primary olfactory and vomeronasal projections by means of horseradish peroxidase reaction reveal that the pattern of vomeronasal projections is similar in Ichthyophis kohtaoensis, Dermophis mexicanus, and Typhlonectes natans, even though T. natans possess stronger vomeronasal projections relative to olfactory projections than I. kohtaoensis and D. mexicanus. However, there are differences with respect to the patterns of olfactory projections. The olfactory projection of I. kohtaoensis is characterized by many displaced glomeruli. T. natans has the smallest olfactory projection. The nervus terminalis is associated with the olfactory system as shown by selective labelings of olfactory projections. Six characters potentially useful for phylogenetic analysis emerge from this study of comparative morphology. The characters were subjected to analysis using PAUP to see (1) if any resolution occurred and (2) if any groups were distinguished, whether they corresponded to phylogenetic arrangements based on other morphological characters. The characters are too few to produce nested dichotomous sets for all cases, but they do support the two typhlonectid genera examined and Dermophis and Gymnopis as sister taxa discrete from other groups, and they show that species within genera cluster together.  相似文献

Variation in the trunk musculature of 28 species of caecilians. representing 24 of the 33 genera and all five families. is summarized. All forms examined have the same muscles in similar positions. Existing variation largely conforms to the current classification of the group. and some variation may be attributable to different modes of locomotion. such as burrowing versus swimming. Caecilian trunk musculature is more similar to that of salamanders than to that of frogs. but the similarity is probably syrnplesiomorphous. Trunk musculature so far has provided no clues to lissamphibian relationships.  相似文献

By analysing key morphological characters (with emphasis on shell, radula and stomach anatomy) and a partial fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (alignment length 860 bp), we examined patterns of diversity and differentiation of a previously overlooked radiation of Madagascan pachychilid freshwater gastropods. These analyses resulted in the discovery of three new species in addition to the two species that were already recognized. The complex nomenclatural and taxonomic implications are discussed and the finding of a viviparous reproductive mode in at least one among otherwise oviparous species is reported. Using a mitochondrial phylogeny that includes all currently accepted pachychilid genera and a strict molecular clock approach, we address the historical biogeography of the Madagascan species with respect to vicariant versus dispersalist biogeographical models. Using two alternative calibrations that were previously suggested for other gastropods, the molecular clock tree suggested that the origin of the Pachychilidae dates back to no more than 50 Mya, whereas the origin of the Madagascan lineage is estimated to date to a period between 15.6–31.5 Mya. These estimates are approximately concurrent with the dating of colonization events in a number of other Madagascan animal taxa. The pachychilid radiation on Madagascar appears not to be older than 3–5 Mya. Thus, although the global patterns of pachychilid distribution have earlier been interpreted to suggest a Gondwanan origin of the family, the present study does not support this postulate. Neither the topology of the molecular phylogeny, nor the timing of events as suggested from a molecular clock were found to be congruent with a vicariance scenario within the framework of Gondwanan fragmentation during the Mesozoic but, instead, imply overseas dispersal during the Cenozoic. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 867–894.  相似文献

Insights into morphological diversification can be obtained from the ways the species of a clade occupy morphospace. Projecting a phylogeny into morphospace provides estimates of evolutionary trajectories as lineages diversified information that can be used to infer the dynamics of evolutionary processes that produced patterns of morphospace occupation. We present here a large-scale investigation into evolution of morphological variation in the skull of caecilian amphibians, a major clade of vertebrates. Because caecilians are limbless, predominantly fossorial animals, diversification of their skull has occurred within a framework imposed by the functional demands of head-first burrowing. We examined cranial shape in 141 species, over half of known species, using X-ray computed tomography and geometric morphometrics. Mapping an existing phylogeny into the cranial morphospace to estimate the history of morphological change (phylomorphospace), we find a striking pattern: most species occupy distinct clusters in cranial morphospace that closely correspond to the main caecilian clades, and each cluster is separated by unoccupied morphospace. The empty spaces in shape space are unlikely to be caused entirely by extinction or incomplete sampling. The main caecilian clades have different amounts of morphological disparity, but neither clade age nor number of species account for this variation. Cranial shape variation is clearly linked to phyletic divergence, but there is also homoplasy, which is attributed to extrinsic factors associated with head-first digging: features of caecilian crania that have been previously argued to correlate with differential microhabitat use and burrowing ability, such as subterminal and terminal mouths, degree of temporal fenestration (stegokrotaphy/zygokrotaphy), and eyes covered by bone, have evolved and many combinations occur in modern species. We find evidence of morphological convergence in cranial shape, among species that have eyes covered by bone, resulting in a narrow bullet-shaped head. These results reveal a complex history, including early expansion of morphospace and both divergent and convergent evolution resulting in the diversity we observe today.  相似文献

We isolated 20 trinucleotide microsatellites from two African tree species: Sorindeia madagascariensis (nine microsatellites) and Leptonychia usambarensis (11 microsatellites). Number of alleles ranged from three to seven in Sorindeia and two to 10 in Leptonychia. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.025 to 0.829 for Sorindeia and from 0.226 to 0.933 for Leptonychia. Two loci from each species departed from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These microsatellite markers will be used to study how forest fragmentation affects pollination and seed dispersal processes of these tree species.  相似文献

The spermatozoa of Gymnophiona show the following autapomorphies: 1) penetration of the distal centriole by the axial fiber; 2) presence of an acrosomal baseplate; 3) presence of an acrosome seat (flattened apical end of nucleus); and 4) absence of juxta-axonemal fibers. The wide separation of the plasma membrane bounding the undulating membrane is here also considered to be apomorphic. Three plesiomorphic spermatozoal characters are recognized that are not seen in other Amphibia but occur in basal amniotes: 1) presence of mitochondria with a delicate array of concentric cristae (concentric cristae of salamander spermatozoa differ in lacking the delicate array); 2) presence of peripheral dense fibers associated with the triplets of the distal centriole; and 3) presence of a simple annulus (a highly modified, elongate annulus is present in salamander sperm). The presence of an endonuclear canal containing a perforatorium is a plesiomorphic feature of caecilian spermatozoa that is shared with urodeles, some basal anurans, sarcopterygian fish, and some amniotes. Spermatozoal synapomorphies are identified for 1) the Uraeotyphlidae and Ichthyophiidae, and 2) the Caeciliidae and Typhlonectidae, suggesting that the members of each pair of families are more closely related to each other than to other caecilians. Although caecilian spermatozoa exhibit the clear amphibian synapomorphy of the unilateral location of the undulating membrane and its axial fiber, they have no apomorphic characters that suggest a closer relationship to either the Urodela or Anura.  相似文献

We describe the isolation of 10 tetranucleotide microsatellites from the spot-throat using an enrichment protocol. All loci were highly variable with the number of alleles ranging from six to 20 and observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.410 to 0.940. Although all loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, locus Mst95 showed significant homozygote excess in both surveyed populations, possibly a consequence of the presence of null alleles at this locus. These loci will be used to determine the extent to which spot-throat populations are isolated in order to help set conservation priorities for this ancient African lineage.  相似文献

The presence of spicules (also termed spines, teeth, or denticles) on the intromittent organ, a character unique to male members of some species in the African caecilian family Scolecomorphidae, has long been known (Noble, '31; Taylor, '68; Wake,'72; Nussbaum,'85). However, their organization and structure has not been examined. Series of males of three species of Scolecomorphus were examined in order to determine the gross and histological organization of the spicules. Spicule morphology changes with ontogeny within species and differs grossly among species. The cellular organization of the spicules is remarkably similar among species, however. The spicules are composed of chondroid cartilage. The large discoid cells are arranged in “stacks” to form the projections, which emerge from an extensive base plate of the same cartilage. The spicules have a connective tissue sheath, which is not continuous with the cloacal epithelium. The sheath of the spicules may or may not be mineralized; the cartilage itself does not appear to be calcified. Mineralization apparently is not correlated with age, reproductive status, or season. Cartilage in the cloaca of these few species poses a series of questions about the interactions of developmental, structural, functional, and phylogenetic properties in the evolution of the reproductive biology of caecilians. Little is known about reproductive trade-offs in African amphibians, but such data, particularly in the form of quantitative measurements, are a key for investigating life history evolution. Here we compile and analyze known data on African bufonids from published material and new data from preserved museum specimens, to investigate interspecific patterns of egg and clutch sizes variation. Our data is a composite of mixed sources, including ova data from dissected females and laid clutches from observations in the field. Our study shows that, as body size increases, clutch size increases but egg size decreases, and when correcting for body size, egg size is inversely correlated with clutch size. These parameter interactions however, are different for different reproductive modes. In free-swimming larval developing species, the same trends are recovered, but for lecithotrophic viviparous species no significant correlations could be recovered for clutch size and body size nor for the trade-off between clutch size and egg size, and egg size is positively related to body size. The egg size of Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis (Angel, 1943) is a clear outlier, which may be due to its matrotrophic viviparous reproduction. In addition, we observed no statistical difference between ova data collected from dissections and laid clutch data from field observations, which suggests that such a mixed dataset has utility in comparative analyses.  相似文献

We assess variation in morphological and molecular characters among three species of Myosorex (the mouse shrew) –Myosorex geata, Myosorex kihaulei, and Myosorex zinki– as a means to test previously proposed biogeographic hypotheses for Tanzanian ‘sky islands’ and systematic hypotheses for Tanzanian mouse shrews. We analyse 17 cranial and dental variables using multivariate statistics and perform phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses on sequences of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA; samples are drawn from every known Tanzanian population of Myosorex. Morphometric and phylogenetic analyses reveal that M. zinki is distinct, but that currently isolated populations of M. geata and M. kihaulei are relatively similar to one another, and may not have been isolated over geological time scales. Analyses of molecular variance identify statistically significant, but limited, genetic variation within and between isolated populations of M. geata and M. kihaulei. Between two putative regional biogeographic boundaries, greater genetic variation is explained by grouping populations on either side of the Ruaha River than by grouping populations on either side of the Makambako Gap. Our results are in agreement with recent studies illustrating the close relationship between faunas of the Southern Highlands and southern Eastern Arc Mountains, diminishing the apparent importance of the Makambako Gap as a historical biogeographic barrier. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 669–680.  相似文献

Viviparity (i.e., the bearing of live young) has evolved from oviparity (egg laying) independently in various major vertebrate lineages, and several transitional stages have been described. The transition from oviparity to viviparity requires the retention of fertilised eggs in the female reproductive tract. Caecilian amphibians (Gymnophiona) display a considerable diversity of reproductive modes, including oviparity and viviparity. Among amphibians, caecilians have also modified the process of internal fertilisation through a special intromittent organ, or phallus, in males. Here we report the oviposition of “embryonated” eggs ranging from various gastrula-to-neurula stages by female Ichthyophis cf. kohtaoensis (Ichthyophiidae) from North-eastern Thailand. In addition, we describe a copulation resulting in an oviposition of embryonated eggs. Our findings will have implications for the further understanding of the evolutionary reproductive biology of amphibians.  相似文献

We examined approximately 600 specimens that represent the Praomys delectorum species group (Muridae: Murinae: Praomyini), a rodent complex restricted to Afromontane landscapes in East Africa and currently viewed as a single species. Morphometric analyses of 21 population samples consistently disclosed cohesive patterns of craniodental differentiation that support the recognition of three species: Praomys delectorum Thomas, confined to extreme southern Malawi; P. melanotus Allen & Loveridge, found in highlands of south‐western Tanzania and contiguous northern Malawi; and P. taitae Heller (including octomastis Hatt), distributed in mountains and foothills of southern Kenya and northern and central Tanzania. Populations of the P. delectorum group are patchily distributed in moist montane forest, most collecting localities falling within 1000–2400 m, and their range collectively coincides with the Tanganyika–Nyasa Montane Forest Group sensu Moreau. Patterns of faunal similarity derived from distributions of 65 species of terrestrial small mammals recorded from Tanzania's highlands, including the Eastern Arc Mountains, demonstrated pronounced geographical discontinuities in montane associations but failed to uncover a prominent vicariant role for the Makambako Gap. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 165 , 420–469.  相似文献

The levels of integration, patterns of allometric growth and size-related differences in skull dimensions of the caecilian Dermophis mexicanus were investigated by means of univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistics. The analyses indicate that (1) most but not all measurements of the skull arc more variable in adults than in juveniles; (2) growth is allometric and results in changes in shape between juveniles and adults; (3) there is a high level of integration of all variables by general size; and (4) homologous paired measurements show concordant allometric trends and are integrated beyond the sole effect of general size. These analyses provide baseline data, a set of hypotheses and a methodological framework for comparative studies of patterns of variation and integration among caecilians and among other vertebrates.  相似文献
