It was shown that the 30th day of compensatory kidney hypertrophy arising as a result of unilateral nephrectomy was accompanied by an increased binding of the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone by cytoplasmic receptors of the tubule cells of the remaining kidney. The transfer of aldosterone from cytoplasmic receptors to the nuclear receptors increased in the tubule cells of the hypertrophied kidney. This suggests that at the early stages hypertrophies are expressed as adaptive phenomena and phenomena related to intensified functioning of the organ fulfilling the double load.  相似文献

Background

A clinical parameter commonly used to assess the neurological status of an individual is the tendon reflex response. However, the clinical method of evaluation often leads to subjective conclusions that may differ between examiners. Moreover, attempts to quantify the reflex response, especially in older age groups, have produced inconsistent results. This study aims to examine the influence of age on the magnitude of the patellar tendon reflex response.

Methodology/Principal Findings

This study was conducted using the motion analysis technique with the reflex responses measured in terms of knee angles. Forty healthy subjects were selected and categorized into three different age groups. Patellar reflexes were elicited from both the left and right patellar tendons of each subject at three different tapping angles and using the Jendrassik maneuver. The findings suggested that age has a significant effect on the magnitude of the reflex response. An angle of 45° may be the ideal tapping angle at which the reflex can be elicited to detect age-related differences in reflex response. The reflex responses were also not influenced by gender and were observed to be fairly symmetrical.

Conclusions/Significance

Neurologically normal individuals will experience an age-dependent decline in patellar reflex response.  相似文献

Unexpected sudden perturbations challenge postural equilibrium and require reactive compensation. This study aimed to assess interaction effects of the direction, displacement and velocity of perturbations on electromyographic (EMG) activity, centre of pressure (COP) displacement and joint kinematics to detect neuromuscular characteristics (phasic and segmental) and kinematic strategies of compensatory reactions in an unilateral balance paradigm. In 20 subjects, COP displacement and velocity, ankle, knee and hip joint excursions and EMG during short (SLR), medium (MLR) and long latency response (LLR) of four shank and five thigh muscles were analysed during random surface translations varying in direction (anterior-posterior (sagittal plane), medial-lateral (frontal plane)), displacement (2 vs. 3cm) and velocity (0.11 vs. 0.18m/s) of perturbation when balancing on one leg on a movable platform. Phases: SLR and MLR were scaled to increased velocity (P<0.05); LLR was scaled to increased displacement (P<0.05). Segments: phasic interrelationships were accompanied by segmental distinctions: distal muscles were used for fast compensation in SLR (P<0.05) and proximal muscles to stabilise in LLR (P<0.05). Kinematics: ankle joints compensated for both increasing displacement and velocity in all directions (P<0.05), whereas knee joint deflections were particularly sensitive to increasing displacement in the sagittal (P<0.05) and hip joint deflections to increasing velocity in the frontal plane (P<0.05). COP measures increased with increasing perturbation velocity and displacement (P<0.05). Interaction effects indicate that compensatory responses are based on complex processes, including different postural strategies characterised by phasic and segmental specifications, precisely adjusted to the type of balance disturbance. To regain balance after surface translation, muscles of the distal segment govern the quick regain of equilibrium; the muscles of the proximal limb serve as delayed stabilisers after a balance disturbance. Further, a kinematic distinction regarding the compensation for balance disturbance indicated different plane- and segment-specific sensitivities with respect to the determinants displacement and velocity.  相似文献

Nephrectomy has been carried out in 34 patients with hypertension associated with unilateral parenchymal renal disease (28 with unilateral pyelonephritis, 3 tuberculosis, 2 hypoplasia, and 1 adenocarcinoma). In 13 of the patients the blood pressure was corrected, in four it was improved, and in 17 it was unaffected. The intravenous pyelogram (by the infusion technique with nephrotomography if necessary) and renogram give adequate information in most patients with unilateral parenchymal renal disease but may need to be supplemented by aortography, or retrograde pyelography, or divided renal function studies in a few special circumstances. When the function of the damaged kidney is less than 25% of the total (which is well maintained), and the contralateral kidney is intact, nephrectomy is recommended provided the hypertension is significant; success is more likely in younger patients with a short history of hypertension.  相似文献

 在Fritts响应函数基础上,提出一种树木生长对各气候变量的非线性响应函数。该响应函数把气候变量的交互作用(各气候变量乘积)之和进行合并,不仅防止了自由度的显著下降,而且还有助于了解各气候变量交互作用对树木生长的平均效应。一组马尾松芯样(15株树,30个芯样,位于马尾松分布带北端)经定年和除趋势后得到的年轮年表与各月平均气温、降水量的关系,经该非线性响应函数分析,表明所取马尾松对前1年11月、当年2、5、8、9、11月的降水量的平方有显著正响应;对前1年12月、当年3、8、12月的平均气温之平方有显著正响应,而对当年2月的平均气温的平方有显著负响应。  相似文献

Background

Growth hormone (GH) treatment has become a frequently applied growth promoting therapy in short children born small for gestational age (SGA). Children born SGA have a higher risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Treatment of ADHD with methylphenidate (MP) has greatly increased in recent years, therefore more children are being treated with GH and MP simultaneously. Some studies have found an association between MP treatment and growth deceleration, but data are contradictory.

Objective

To explore the effects of MP treatment on growth in GH-treated short SGA children

Methods

Anthropometric measurements were performed in 78 GH-treated short SGA children (mean age 10.6 yr), 39 of whom were also treated with MP (SGA-GH/MP). The SGA-GH/MP group was compared to 39 SGA-GH treated subjects. They were matched for sex, age and height at start of GH, height SDS at start of MP treatment and target height SDS. Serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels were yearly determined. Growth, serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 levels during the first three years of treatment were analyzed using repeated measures regression analysis.

Results

The SGA-GH/MP group had a lower height gain during the first 3 years than the SGA-GH subjects, only significant between 6 and 12 months of MP treatment. After 3 years of MP treatment, the height gain was 0.2 SDS (±0.1 SD) lower in the SGA-GH/MP group (P = 0.17). Adult height was not significantly different between the SGA-GH/MP and SGA-GH group (−1.9 SDS and −1.9 SDS respectively, P = 0.46). Moreover, during the first 3 years of MP treatment IGF-I and IGFBP-3 measurements were similar in both groups.

Conclusion

MP has some negative effect on growth during the first years in short SGA children treated with GH, but adult height is not affected.  相似文献

Forty-eight hours after unilateral nephrectomy in young male Sprague-Dawley rats the concentrations of free methionine, alanine and tyrosine in renal cortical tissue were increased by 15-65 percent while the corresponding plasma concentrations decreased by 23-35 percent. The renal cortical concentrations of valine and leucine increased by 41 percent and 26 percent while plasma concentrations remained unchanged. The cortical concentrations of ornithine, serine and threonine remained unchanged while the plasma concentration decreased by approximately one-third. The total free amino acid contained in the cortex was not changed, while total free amino acids in plasma decreased by 7 percent. These data are thought to reflect an increased uptake of methionine and tyrosine into renal cells during compensatory hypertrophy, and an increased incorporation into renal protein of serine, threonine and ornithine. All these changes as well as all other biochemical changes accompanying compensatory hypertrophy with the exception of an increase of the RNA/DNA ratio were prevented by starvation for 48 hours after unilateral nephrectomy.In young male Sprague-Dawley rats and adult male Charles River mice, the incorporation of 14C-choline into acid-insoluble phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin) was already accelerated 5 minutes after contralateral nephrectomy and further rose to +68 ± 7 percent within 20 minutes to 3 hours. Incorporation of 14C-choline into phospholipids remained accelerated for two to three days and reflected increased rates of phospholipid synthesis rather than increased choline uptake. Three hours after unilateral nephrectomy in mice, incorporation of i.p. injected 14C-choline into phospholipids was accelerated 25 percent. The rate of turnover of free labelled renal phospholipids was not accelerated during compensatory renal growth. The very early increase of choline incorporation into phospholipids after contralateral nephrectomy, therefore, appears to reflect an increased rate of synthesis of membrane material.  相似文献

One of the problems involved in carrying out large-scale coleoptilecylinder straight growth assays is the effect of coleoptileage upon the behaviour of the sections. This effect, as measuredboth by the length of coleoptile and the time from sowing theseeds, has been investigated by an examination of the growthof sections cut from coleoptiles of several length grades onfive occasions 6–10 hours apart. The response of thesesections to a range of concentrations of ß-indolylaceticacid (IAA) was followed during the period of growth to ascertainthe most suitable time for measurement of sections in a routinetest. A number of general trends associated with coleoptile age (whethermeasured by length, or time from planting) were observed inamount of growth, growth-rate, period of growth, and sensitivity.It is suggested that these characteristics are associated withthe amount of the total growth already made by the parent coleoptileat the time of taking the section, and also that the sectionexhibits an ‘intrinsic growth-rate’ related to thegrowth-rate of the coleoptile at the time the section is cut. A period of growth of 17–20 hours seems satisfactory forroutine tests except where very young coleoptiles are used;in this case growth less than that in water is sometimes observedin very low concentrations of IAA.  相似文献

Studies were made of the influence of genes for vernalizationresponse on the growth and development of four near-isogeniclines of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The duration from sowing of flower initiation, terminal spikeletformation and ear emergence all increased with increasing vernalizationresponse. There was a close positive relationship between thedays from sowing to flower initiation and from sowing to earemergence, indicating that the duration of either phase of developmentis a useful measure of relative vernalization when daylengthdoes not limit the rate of development. Total spikelet number per ear and the duration of spikelet initationincreased with increasing vernalization response and there wasa correspondingly higher rate of spikelet initiation in thetwo lines with stronger vernalization response. Most of the differences in growth between the lines were associatedwith diferences in development caused by the vrn genes. Maximumtotal above-ground dry matter and total leaf area per plantincreased with increasing vernalization repsonse but relativegrowth rate and leaf area per plant were not significantly differentbetween the lines. There were no differences in net assimilationrate between the four lines until 40 d from sowing; thereafterit decreased, with the greatest decrease in the line with thestrongest vernalization response. Cornell Control White Leghorn chicks were grown in a common environment to five weeks of age and selected for fast and slow gain in body weight from five to nine weeks of age at two temperatures, 21.1° (cold) and 32.2° (hot), during which time a constant 50% relative humidity was maintained. All lines were tested each generation in both temperature environments. Selection continued for four generations, with a second replicate started six weeks after the first replicate in each generation. In the hot environment, a 20% reduction (104 g) in five-to-nine-week weight gain was found. The responses to selection for fast and slow growth were symmetrical except in the first generation, when an outbreak of bronchitis confounded selection for body weight with selection for disease resistance and allowed little gain in the slow lines. No genotype-by-environment interactions were found, indicating that selection in either direction in either selection temperature produced equal responses in either test temperature. This suggests that any interactions observed between the growth of strains in tropical vs. temperate climates must be due to some difference between these environments other than the temperature differences studied.  相似文献

Twenty-four patients with Parkinsonism were treated with levodopa for up to one year. Ten were aged under 65, 12 were aged 65 or over, and two were specifically included because they were considered to have arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism. These two patients showed no response to treatment. The 10 younger patients showed less clinical evidence of arteriosclerosis than the older ones, and responded significantly better to treatment with levodopa. Mean improvement was 61% in the younger group after 12 months'' treatment and 28% in the older group. Improvement was greatest within three months of starting treatment. Abnormal movements which resulted from treatment with levodopa could be reduced with only slight loss of therapeutic benefit by the addition of tetrabenazine.  相似文献

When AVT (arginine vasotocin) was given neonatally during theperiod when the brain is undergoing sexual differentiation,increased growth of the reproductive organs was observed inadulthood. Injection of AVT after this neonatal period in immatureanimals led to diminished growth of the accessory organs andin some cases the gonads themselves. The hypertrophic responseof the in situ ovary in adult mice following unilateral ovariectomy(UO) was inhibited in a dose-related manner by a single intraperitonealinjection of freshly prepared AVT. Much less AVT was requiredfor this response when injected into the third ventricle. Afterintraperitoneal injection, arginine vasopressin (AVP), lysinevasopressin (LVP), and 4-leucine vasotocin (4-leu-AVT) alsoinhibited compensatory ovarian hypertrophy whereas oxytocindid not. The commonality in die structure of these antigonadotrophicpeptides include a closed ring and a basic amino acid in position8. After opening the disulfide bond of these nonapeptides withmercaptoethanol, a single injection of the reduced AVT, AVP,LVP, or 4-leu-AVT into UO mice causes exaggerated hypertrophyof the remaining ovary. When added with leuteinizing hormone-releasinghormone (LRH) to culture medium containing hemipituitaries fromcastrated estrogen-progesterone primed female rats, AVT significantlyincreased the release of radioimmunoassayable LH above thatdue to LRH alone. Life on earth depends on the presence of photoautotrophic organisms that are able to input carbon into the ecosystems through the process of photosynthesis which, with a few specialized exceptions, takes place within the chloroplast. This organelle contains the most complex redox system in plants being composed of numerous players including thiol reductases, peroxidases, and glutathione-related enzymes. It seems likely that these proteins act together to adjust redox metabolism enabling plants to grow efficiently under both normal and stressed conditions. However, our knowledge concerning how these proteins interact and if they can compensate one another is relatively limited. This is in part due to the failure of considering these components from a systemic perspective. Here, we provide a systemic view of the chloroplastic-redox network highlighting how it operates and how its components co-operate to maintain efficient chloroplastic function. We further explore the cross-talk between chloroplastic-redox metabolism and that of other subcellular compartments. Given the complexity of plant redox metabolism and the compensatory role played by different redox systems, we argue that a unique possibility to understand this system is afforded by systems biology approaches and by characterizing mutants for multiple genes. Taking this into account, we highlight how gene co-expression and protein–protein network analyses coupled with different reverse genetic strategies could be used to reveal the function, potential redundancies, and complementarities among the components of the chloroplastic redox network.  相似文献

The effect of age on compensatory hypertrophy and functional adaptation to loss of 75 percent of renal mass was studied in canine puppies. In one group of animals the surgery was done between 1-5 days after birth and in another group, at two months of age. All animals were studied six weeks later. Shamoperated littermates served as controls. The newborn puppies in the experimental group were able to grow and maintain homeostasis as well as their controls, whereas the older experimental animals grew poorly and had significantly higher levels of plasma creatinine than their sham-operated counterparts (p < .05). The increase in mass of the remaining kidney was twice as much in the newborn as in the older dogs. Functional adaptation, as expressed by GFR, was nearly complete in the young, but reached only about 45 percent of controls in the older age group (p<.005). The intrarenal blood flow distribution was similar for experimental and control animals in both groups studied. There were, however, marked differences in the pattern of single glomerular perfusion rates: whereas in the older dogs the increase was confined to the deeper nephrons, in the newborn an increase occurred in all zones of the kidney. These studies demonstrate that compensation for massive loss of renal tissue is complete when the injury is sustained in the immediate postnatal period but only partial when it occurs later on in life. A loss in the adaptive capacity of the superficial nephrons appears to account for this age-related difference.  相似文献
