TherbcL gene of 25 taxa was sequenced and analyzed cladistically in order to define more precisely the orderAsterales s.l. and to reconstruct the phylogeny ofGoodeniaceae. The cladistic analyses show that theAsterales comprise the familiesAbrophyllaceae, Alseuosmiaceae, Argophyllaceae, Asteraceae, Calyceraceae, Campanulaceae s.l.,Donatiaceae, Goodeniaceae (includingBrunoniaceae),Menyanthaceae, Pentaphragmataceae, andStylidiaceae. Abrophyllaceae, Alseuosmiaceae, Brunoniaceae, andDonatiaceae have previously not been studied in this respect. Within theGoodeniaceae, four groups supported by therbcL data can be distinguished: the genusLechenaultia, theAnthotium-Dampiera-group, the genusBrunonia, and a group formed by the remaining genera, theScaevola-Goodenia-group.  相似文献

All members of Aristolochiaceae have anatropous, bitegmic, crassinucellate ovules, which are endostomic except in Saruma and Asarum arifolium where ovules are amphistomic. The outer integument is two cell-layered and the inner integument is three cell-layered. The chalazal megaspore is the functional one. All these conditions appear to be plesiomorphic for the order Piperales, which consists of five families, Aristolochiaceae, Hydnoraceae, Lactoridaceae, Piperaceae and Saururaceae. The embryo sac in Aristolochiaceae is eight-nucleate and corresponds to the Polygonum type; a hypostase is frequently present in this family. The seed coat of Aristolochia s.l., Asarum, Saruma and some Thottea species consists primarily of a two cell-layered testa, and a three cell-layered tegmen. In some species the cells of the outer epidermis become radially elongated, forming reticulate wall thickenings. Cells of the inner layer of the testa have crystals and thickened inner walls. The three layers of the tegmen are tangentially elongated, and become cross fibres at maturity, as fibres of the outer and inner layers are parallel to the seed axis, whereas those of the middle layer are perpendicular to it. This type of seed coat anatomy is synapomorphic for Aristolochiaceae. In addition, the gross morphology of the seed and elaiosome histology are remarkably similar in Asarum and Saruma, thus supporting a sister-group relationship between them. Embryological and seed characters do not supply any synapomorphy that support a close relationship between Aristolochiaceae, Hydnoraceae and Lactoridaceae. Instead, some seed features such as the absence of seed appendages and the collapsed cells of endotesta may indicate a close relationship of Lactoris with Piperaceae plus Saururaceae, although this is the subject of further analysis.  相似文献

In the light of the discovery of hydroxylated pulvinic acids in the gasteromycetePisolithus arhizus, a possible relationship with the boletoid fungi and their relatives is explored. Biogenetic inter-relationships are indicated, including the host range ofApiocrea chrysosperma, and the distribution of phenylpyruvate-derived pigments offered in schematic form.  相似文献

The effect of dietary partially hydrogenated herring oil (HHO) on the fatty acid composition of the phospholipids of rat retina and on the amplitude of the a-wave of the electroretinogram (ERG) was studied in rats raised for several generations on an essential fatty acid poor diet. The most significant effect of the dietary treatment was a decreased content of arachidonic acid (C20:4 omega 6) and an increased concentration of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6 omega 2) and 18:1 isomers associated with the phosphatidylinositol (PI). The a-wave of the ERG showed a decreasing amplitude during the experiment and was reduced with about 30% (P less than 0.004) of the initial value in all rats at the end of the experiment. The pronounced change in the arachidonic content in PI and the decreased amplitude of the a-wave of the ERG suggest that arachidonic acid of the PI has an important function in the visual phototransduction process.  相似文献

Summary A total of 20 Golgi-impregnated cone horizontal cells of Nannacara anomala (Cichlidae) were studied in alternating semi- and ultrathin sections in order to examine their connections with the overlying square mosaic of equal double and central single cones. Cone horizontal cells exhibit three types of processes: (a) the long horizontal axon, (b) short horizontal dendrites with a terminal swelling, and (c) cone contacting processes ascending towards the outer plexiform layer. As seen in tangential sections, the latter processes are arranged in the form of two concentric circles including a central spot. The processes of the inner circle contact the eight double cone pedicles of one square unit: processes of the outer circle contact eight more double cone pedicles which are directly adjacent to the square unit. The central spot represents a process which contacts the central single cone. Processes of the inner circle most often terminate in a dichotomous branching which represents the lateral elements to one ribbon synapse, whereas in the outer circle only a single terminal swelling is observed. Because of the mosaic of the cones and the constancy of this pattern of connectivity a model can be constructed where the dendritic fields of the cone horizontal cells overlap to a considerable extent. From this model, it follows that each double cone pedicle is contacted by four different horizontal cells. The functional significance of these findings for color vision is discussed in the light of recent work with the microspectrophotometer characterizing the cone system of this species as bichromatic. The mosaiclike arrangement of the horizontal cell dendrites supports the conclusion that the parallels between the patterns of receptor and horizontal cells are no coincidence but play an important role in lateral inhibition and neural adaptation of the retina.A preliminary report of this study was given at the international symposium Neural principles in vision held at the University of Munich in September 1975Supported by grant Wa 348/1 of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

This paper provides the first comparative survey of structural variation in inflorescence architecture and flower structure of Hemigraphis and other members of the subtribe Strobilanthinae (Acanthaceae). Several discrete structural characters are identified which may provide support for phylogenetic relationships within the group. These include (1) the presence or absence of an accessory bud, (2) the presence or absence of a hollow style, (3) the presence or absence of an abscission layer, (4) the number of stamens comprising the androecium, and (5) the pattern of filament detachment. The structure of the filament curtain, a complex structure that partitions the flower, is also investigated. A more precise term for this structure stapetal curtain is suggested since it is a result of close synorganisation between the filaments and corolla tube. This structure appears to have a wide distribution throughout Acanthaceae and is not confined to Ruellieae s.l., as previously described. The earlier characterisation of four discrete types of filament curtain is unsatisfactory, since many of the features used to distinguish them are continuous and not unique features of particular species. We acknowledge Richard Bateman, Mark Carine, Peter Endress, Colin Hughes, Toby Pennington and an anonymous reviewer for comments on this paper. Summary Neocarus texanus, a primitive mite, bears two pairs of eyes, which are principally similar in ultrastructure. Each eye is covered externally by a cuticular cornea. It is underlain by flat sheath cells which send extensive processes into the retina. The retina is composed of distal and proximal cells. The 20 distal cells of the anterior eye are inversely orientated and form 10 disc-like rhabdoms. They represent typical retinula cells. Each rhabdom encloses the dendritic process of a neuron, the perikaryon of which is located outside the retina (proximal cells). The significance of this cell is not known. The retina is underlain by a crystalline tapetum. In the posterior eye 14 retinula cells form 7 rhabdoms in an arrangement similar to the anterior eye. The eyes of one side of the body are located within a capsule of pigment cells. Together the axons of the distal and proximal cells form the two optic nerves, one on each side of the body. The optic nerves leave the eyes anteriorly and terminate in two optic neuropils located in the brain. From structural evidence it is concluded, that the resolution of the eyes must be rather low.The peculiar proximal cells have not been observed previously in Acari. They probably resemble at best the eccentric cells and arhabdomeric cells of xiphosurans, scorpions, whip-scorpions and opilionids. Also, inverse retinae and tapeta of the present type have not been found in Acari until now, but are present in other Arachnida. Thus the eyes ofNeocarus texanus evidently represent a unique type within the Acari.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the vegetative cell ofBrassica napus tricellular pollen grains, just before anthesis with standard chemical fixation, is reported. The vegetative cell may be regarded as a highly differentiated and metabolically active fat-storage cell. It contains many mitochondria with a well developed internal membrane system, starchless plastids, microbodies, lipid bodies, dictyosomes and numerous vesicles thought to originate from the dictysomes. Rough endoplasmic reticulum organized in stacks of cisternae is also spatially associated with certain organelles, mainly lipid bodies, microbodies and plastids. There are also randomly distributed polyribosome areas. The microbodies are mainly polymorphic in shape and are often observed in contact with lipid bodies. The above spatial relationship implies that the microbodies may have a glyoxysomal function. In the late period of vegetative cell maturation, the microbodies are probably involved in the process of glyconeogenesis in which the conversion of lipid reserves to sugar takes place.Abbreviations VC vegetative cell - VN vegetative nucleus - SC sperm cell - M mitochondria - MB microbodies - L lipid body - P plastid - D dictyosomes  相似文献

Cyperaceae (sedges) are an important component of many ecosystems. To understand better their regeneration, we examined seed ecology, including dispersal, seed characteristics, and germination behavior that relate to seed bank development and persistence. We also evaluated sedge seed banks from 104 studies, representing a wide array of habitats. Sedge seed bank development and persistence were associated with germination and dormancy traits, namely: dormancy level, seasonal dormancy patterns, and requirement for light, alternating temperatures, and aerobic conditions. Interplay of traits appears to have resulted in low-risk germination strategies adapted to exploit infrequent occurrence of gaps and facilitate formation of persistent seed banks. A variety of dispersal modes and morphological adaptations occurred, but many species had no apparent specialized structures. The main dispersal vectors were water and then animals. About 216 species, in 21 genera, were recorded in the seed bank survey. High densities (>50,000 m−2) occurred occasionally in wet habitats, but generally values were low (<500 m−2 in 70% of entries). Species richness was also generally low (mean 4.8 species study−1), but ranged from 10 to 33 species in certain wetlands. Our studies showed varied reproductive strategies within habitats, persistence, and ability of many species to colonize disturbed habitats. Overall, seed banks tended to be persistent (>1 year). Maximum longevity ranged between 10 and 295 years, but for certain species viability was lost in <3 years. Seeds of many sedges occurred in deeper soil layers to depths >1 m. Seed production, low in rhizomatous species, ranged between 0 and 345,000 seeds m−2 year−1. Amphicarpy or pseudo-viviparous plantlets occurred in limited numbers of species. The relation between seed production, seed rain, and seed bank is largely obscure and awaits further investigation. For successful restoration and species conservation projects, seed banks (or a source of seeds) are necessary, combined with suitable germination and establishment conditions. Future seed bank studies are considered.  相似文献

We present phylogenetic analyses of Malpighiales, which are poorly understood with respect to relationships within the order, using sequences from rbcL, atpB, matK and 18SrDNA from 103 genera in 23 families. From several independent and variously combined analyses, a four-gene analysis using all sequence data provided the best resolution, resulting in the single most parsimonious tree. In the Malpighiales [bootstrap support (BS) 100%], more than eight major clades comprising a family or group of families successively diverged, but no clade containing more than six families received over 50% BS. Instead, ten terminal clades that supported close relationships between and among families (>50% BS) were obtained, between, for example, Balanopaceae and Chrysobalanaceae; Lacistemataceae and Salicaceae; and Phyllanthaceae and Picrodendraceae. The monophyly of Euphorbiaceae sens. str. were strongly supported (BS 100%), but its sister group was unclear. Euphorbiaceae sens. str. comprised two basally diverging clades (BS 100%): one leading to the Clutia group (Chaetocarpus, Clutia, Pera and Trigonopleura), and the other leading to the rest of the family. The latter shared a palisadal, instead of a tracheoidal exotegmen as a morphological synapomorphy. While both Acalyphoideae (excluding Dicoelia and the Clutia group) and Euphorbioideae are monophyletic, Crotonoideae were paraphyletic, requiring more comprehensive analyses.  相似文献

Fishelson, L., Delarea, Y. and Goren, M. 2012. Comparative morphology and cytology of the eye, with particular reference to the retina, in lizardfishes (Synodontidae, Teleostei). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 93 : 68–79. The retinas of nine species of lizardfishes (Synodontidae) are composed of double cones, single cones, and rods. The cones are 16–28 μm long, and their number in the fundus of adult Synodus variegatus reaches ca. 32,900 mm2 (varying from ca. 300,000 to ca. 390,000 in a 10 mm2 of the retina), while in Saurida spp., they number ca. 12,000–14,000/mm2. The cone ellipsoids are with up to 600 mitochondria, 0.5–1.6 μm in diameter. The rods are 30–50 μm long; their outer segments 0.6–1.2 μm thick and 15–18 μm long; their inner segments elongated. Their number varies from 15 to 128 million/retina. In fish of similar dimensions but of different species, the number of visual cells in the retina differs. In all species, the eyes increase from 2.0 mm in diameter in the smallest fish studied to 12 mm in the largest one. With eye growth, the retina in the various species increases from ca. 3.8 mm2 in the smallest fish to ca.160.0 mm2 in the large Saurida macrolepis. The possible ecological aspects of the observed phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

The zoospores and isogametes ofUlvaria obscura var.blyttii, the isogametes ofMonostroma bullosum, and the anisogametes ofM. grevillei have a flagellar apparatus with counterclockwise absolute orientation and terminal caps, and therefore belong to theUlvophyceae. On the basis of the absence or presence of body scales and the morphologies of certain flagellar apparatus components,Ulvaria obscura var.blyttii is retained in theUlvales, whileM. bullosum, M. grevillei andM. oxyspermum are referred to theUlotrichales. Differences in scale morphology, certain flagellar apparatus components, and early thallus ontogeny support the transfer ofM. oxyspermum to the genusGayralia. Mating structures and their positional relationships within the cell are described from the gametes examined. A plasmalemma-associated plaque that may be a degenerate mating structure occurs in someG. oxysperma motile cells.  相似文献

Summary The protistan parasiteLeishmania is a dimorphic cell that survives as a motile promastigote in the insect digestive tract, and a non-motile, amastigote from within the phagolysosomal compartment of the vertebrate host's phagocytes. The surface ofLeishmania must interface with a range of differing environments and facilitate uptake of nutrients, whilst protecting the parasite from various host defence mechanisms. This review discusses the organization of the leishmanial cell, and the biology of its major surface constituents, the lipophosphoglycan and the surface proteinase, gp 63.  相似文献

Medicago truncatula, a model for legume genomics, can be regenerated by somatic embryogensis by the use of a suitable genotype and an auxin plus cytokinin. The stress response induced by explant wounding and culture is increasingly recognized as an important component of somatic embryo induction. We have cloned and investigated the stress kinase gene MtSK1 in relation to somatic embryogenesis in M. truncatula, using the highly embryogenic mutant Jemalong 2HA (2HA) and its progenitor Jemalong. The main features of the MtSK1 protein of 351 amino acids are an N-terminal kinase domain and a C-terminal glutamic acid-rich region, which is predicted to be a coiled-coil. MtSK1 is a member of the SnRK2 subgroup of the SnRK group of plant kinases. Members of the SnRK2 kinases play a role in stress responses of plants. MtSKI expression is induced by wounding in the cultured tissue independent of auxin or cytokinin. However, in both 2HA and Jemalong, as the callus develops in response to auxin plus cytokinin, MtSK1 expression continues to increase. MtSK1 responds to salt stress in vivo, consistent with its role as a stress kinase. The likely role of MtSK1 in stress-induced signaling will facilitate the relating of stress–response pathways to auxin and cytokinin-induced signaling in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the induction of somatic embryogenesis in M. truncatula.  相似文献

Floral development and inflorescence structure within Streptocarpus and Saintpaulia were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We discuss the structure and development of the pair-flowered cyme and the floral ontogeny found in the Gesneriaceae in a phylogenetic context with particular reference to an East African clade of Streptocarpus and Saintpaulia. Current phylogenetic hypotheses divide the caulescent East African Streptocarpus species into two distinct clades, in relation to which the position of Saintpaulia is not yet clear. Variation in the branching of the inflorescence showed phylogenetic significance and included dichasial, monochasial and unbranched patterns. In four of the East African Streptocarpus species sampled a single lateral bracteole was present on the first to third axes, after which the inflorescence was ebracteolate. Our results indicate that there may be some link between bracteole suppression and an alteration in the order of sepal initiation. The loss or suppression of lateral bracteoles also appears to result in the precocious development of the lateral cyme meristem.  相似文献

The histological features and distribution of cell types in the distal lobe of Lepidosiren resemble those of Protopterus. Three "basophilic" cell types are described, whereas the identification of two acidophilic cell types is uncertain. In the intermediate lobe two cell types have been found. Anti-(1-24)ACTH IgG was used in the unlabeled antibody-enzyme method to identify corticotropin-containing cells in the adenohypophysis of Lepidosiren with light and electron microscopy. Corticotropin was demonstrated in cells of the distal lobe and the intermediate lobe. The staining reaction in the distal lobe is localized in the rostrally distributed lead-hematoxylin positive cells. At the ultrastructural level the immunoreaction in these distal lobe cells is localized on polymorphic granules ranging from 130 to 210 nm. Absorption experiments show that the immunoreactive cells in the distal lobe contain at least residues 1-3 and 14-17 of the naturally occurring corticotropin hormone, while the intermediate lobe cells contain alpha-MSH or at least residues 1-3 of ACTH. The plasma level of corticotropin was determined to be 71 ng/l by means of radioimmunoassay (RIA).  相似文献
