Abstract Mummified pistachios containing fully grown diapause larvae of Eurytoma plotnikovi Nikol'skaya (Hym., Eurytomidae) were collected in early August and late September in coastal northern Greece and subjected to various photoperiod and temperature treatments, then maintained at 19 or 26°C and a long-day (LD 16:8 h), a changing, or a short-day (LD 10:14 h) photoperiod until pupation. In larvae of early August (beginning of diapause) subjected for 20 weeks to 19°C under a long, a changing, or a short photophase, followed by 19°C and a long photophase, 50% of the larvae pupated after 24, 18 and 13 weeks respectively. After exposure for 20 or even 12 weeks to a short photophase and low temperatures (10 or 4°C), pupation occurred after only 7–8 weeks and was more synchronous. The ranges of temperature for diapause development and post-diapause morphogenesis overlap. After exposure for 12 weeks to short days and low temperature, larvae of late September pupated much sooner under long days than under short days and sooner at 26° than at 19°C. E.plotnikovi depends on both temperature and photoperiod for diapause development, low temperature having a strong favourable effect on the earlier part and long day on the later part of diapause. In a few larvae of another pistachio seed wasp, Megastigmus pistaciae Walker, after a long enough period of low temperatures, diapause was terminated normally at 26°C and long days, or at 19°C and long or short days.  相似文献

This paper describes the detailed characteristics of the circannual pupation rhythm in Anthrenus verbasci determined by laboratory experiments under various photoperiods and temperatures. The frequency distribution of larval duration showed a periodic pattern over 2-3 years and the period was 37-40 weeks under a constant short-day photoperiod (light:dark 12:12) at 20 degrees C. This rhythm showed temperature compensation to some extent under a short-day photoperiod between 17.5 degrees C and 27.5 degrees C. Under alternations of a long-day (light:dark 16:8) and a short-day photoperiod, pupation occurred 21-24.5 weeks after transfer from a long-day to a short-day photoperiod. Therefore, we concluded that the timing of pupation in A. verbasci is controlled by a circannual rhythm and its zeitgeber is a change in photoperiod. Furthermore, when larvae were transferred from a long-day to a short-day photoperiod at various ages, the larval duration after the photoperiodic transfer depended on the time of the transfer. This difference can be explained by phase-dependent phase shifts in the circannual rhythm.  相似文献

The chrysanthemum longicorn beetle, Phytoecia rufiventris, overwinters in the adult stage and reproduces in spring. Larvae of this beetle develop during summer inside a host stem or root. In the present study, photoperiodic control of larval development and its adaptive significance were examined in this beetle using an artificial diet. Larvae showed a short-day photoperiodic response at 25 °C with a critical day length of around 14 h; larvae reared under short-day conditions pupated, whereas those reared under long-day conditions entered summer diapause with some supernumerary molts and did not pupate. A similar response was found at 30 °C, but with a shorter critical day length. Below the critical day length, a shorter day length corresponded to a shorter larval period. Larvae transferred from long-day conditions to various photoperiods showed a similar quantitative response. Field rearing of larvae starting at various times of year showed that pupation occurs within a relatively short period in early autumn. Field rearing of pupae and adults at various times indicated that only pupation in early autumn results in a high survival rate until winter. Earlier or later pupation led to a low survival rate due to death before overwintering in the adult and pupal stages, respectively. Thus, in P. rufiventris, timing of pupation regulated by the quantitative short-day photoperiodic response is vital for survival. Relatively lower developmental threshold in the pupal stage supports this hypothesis.  相似文献

Abstract.  Eggs laid by adult female Dianemobius nigrofasciatus , reared under long-day (LD 16 : 8 h, 25 °C) or short-day (LD 12 : 12 h, 25 °C) conditions from the nymphal stage, are kept at several constant temperatures. At 22.5–30.0 °C, eggs laid by long-day adults show lower incidences of diapause than those laid by short-day adults. In both eggs laid by adults under long-day conditions and those under short-day conditions, the higher the temperature at which the eggs are kept, the lower the incidence of diapause. When eggs of long-day adults are exposed to a low-temperature pulse (10 °C, 24 h) on the day of deposition (day 0), the incidence of diapause increases. The low-temperature pulse on day 1 does not increase the incidence of diapause. By contrast, when the eggs of short-day adults are exposed to a high-temperature pulse (35 °C, 24 h) on day 0 or day 1, the incidence of diapause decreases. The temperature pulses on day 0 are more effective at diapause prevention. Staining of diapause eggs by the Feulgen–Rossenbeck method shows that the eggs enter diapause at the blastoderm stage, which is on day 1 or day 2 at 25 °C. The exposure of adults to long days and higher temperatures prevents the eggs from entering diapause. In D. nigrofasciatus , embryonic diapause is controlled by maternal effects, adult photoperiod and temperature, and egg temperature before or at diapause.  相似文献

Larvae of the west-Japan type yellow-spotted longicorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), show a long-day type photoperiodic response at 25 degrees C; under long-day conditions, larvae pupate after the fourth or fifth instar, while under short-day conditions, they undergo a few nonstationary supernumerary molts and eventually enter diapause. In the present study, the effect of food on the development and photoperiodic response of the larvae was examined with special reference to molting and pupation. Although the pupal body size was greatly affected by the food quality and the length of feeding, the critical day length for induction of metamorphosis at 25 degrees C was always between 13.5 and 14 h. Exposure to starvation of larvae reared on the standard diet revealed that the capability to pupate is acquired after a few days of feeding in the fourth instar. In the larvae that had acquired the capability to pupate, premature pupation was induced by exposure to starvation, indicating that feeding becomes dispensable long before it is normally terminated.  相似文献

Araschnia levana L. occurs in two seasonal morphs. Larvae reared under short-day conditions become diapause pupae and emerge as red spring-morph butterflies. Long-day larvae become non-diapause pupae, which emerge as black and white summer morphs. Pupae reared under these different conditions were joined in parabiosis. Both underwent adult development without diapause and the long-day animals developed into the summer morph as normal. The morph of short-day animals depended on the time of parabiosis. When they were joined to fresh long-day pupae 1 day after their own pupation, summer morphs resulted. When parabiosis began 4 days after pupation or later, spring morphs resulted. Extirpation of the brain-corpora cardiaca-allata complex from long-day pupae affected neither non-diapause development nor the summer morph. Adult development could be prevented by removal of head and prothorax. When adult development was initiated in the remaining bodies by 20-hydroxyecdysone 14 days after pupation, the spring morph resulted.—Injection of 20-dydroxyecdysone into 3-day-old short-day pupae initiated adult development and led to the summer morph. Injections into 10-day-old short-day pupae led to the spring morph. The same was true in diapause pupae deprived of their brain-corpora cardiaca-allata complex. These results indicate that seasonal diphenism in A. levana is controlled only by the timing of ecdysteroid release, which initiates adult development. There is no direct influence of the brain on wing coloration.  相似文献

Under long-day conditions larvae of Psacothea hilaris (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) pupate after the 4th or 5th instar, while under short-day conditions they undergo 2-4 nonstationary supernumerary molts and eventually enter diapause. To explore the possibility of a threshold weight for entering diapause, P. hilaris larvae were deprived of food on days 0 (day of ecdysis), 4 or 8 of the 4th, 5th and 6th instars under short-day conditions. Within the first 40 days of starvation, 60% of the larvae starved starting on day 0 of the 4th instar died, but all the larvae starved at later stages survived. The incidence of diapause in these survivors was determined by the occurrence of pupation after a temporary chilling at 15 degrees C for 15 days. Diapause incidence increased as the onset of starvation was delayed; from 11% in the larvae starved on day 0 of the 5th instar to 100% in the larvae starved on day 4 and day 8 of the 6th instar. Analysis of the relationship between the initial weight of a respective larva at the onset of starvation and its pupation success revealed that none of the larvae weighing 690 mg did. This finding suggests the presence of a threshold weight (about 600 mg), below which larvae are incapable of entering diapause. We discuss these findings with reference to the life history of P. hilaris.  相似文献

The role of photoperiod on the initiation of the breeding season of brushtail possums was investigated in possums housed in three light regimens: a short-day, a natural and a long-day photoperiod. Seven possums were housed in a natural photoperiod. Four possums were transferred to a short-day photoperiod (10 h light, 14 h dark) and eight possums to a long-day photoperiod (14 h light, 10 h dark) on 22 November, when the daylength was 13.34 h. The first rises in plasma progesterone concentrations were observed on 9 January +/- 9 days (n = 4), 11 March +/- 6 days (n = 7) and 6 May +/- 6 days (n = 8), for possums held in short-day, natural or long-day photoperiods respectively. Similarly, births were observed on 12 January and 14 February in the short-day group, from 3 March to 8 May for the natural photoperiod group, and from 5 May to 8 August for the long-day group. These results suggest that photoperiod is important in the timing of the breeding season. However, annual breeding will commence in a nonstimulatory long-day photoperiod. Thus a long-day photoperiod does not prevent breeding activity.  相似文献

Effects of short-day photoperiod, pinealectomy, and melatonin on sexual maturation were tested in Peromyscus leucopus from either Connecticut (CT) or Georgia (GA). Laboratory reared-stocks from CT and GA were exposed to short daylength (photoperiod) from birth or 25 days of age. At 12 wk of age, delay in sexual maturation was indicated in most CT mice by decreased testis length, combined testes weight, and seminal vesicle weight. Conversely, GA animals did not delay sexual maturation when exposed to short-day photoperiod from either birth or 25 days of age. These results indicate that responses to short daylengths differ for juvenile CT and GA populations. In a second experiment, pinealectomized or sham-operated CT males were exposed to short-day (9L:15D) or long-day (16L:8D) photoperiod from birth. Pinealectomy blocked the effect of short daylength on reproduction. Therefore, the pineal must be involved in the delay of sexual maturation observed for short-day CT mice. The effects of melatonin, a pineal gland hormone, were tested with chronic s.c. implants or daily injections. In CT mice given either melatonin implants or afternoon injections, sexual maturation was delayed. GA mice were insensitive to all melatonin treatments. Further, no differences in circadian organization (phase angle, duration of activity, period under constant dark) between GA and CT animals were apparent. Collectively, these studies indicate that melatonin is involved in the mechanism responsible for delay of sexual maturation in CT mice. Short-day insensitivity of GA Peromyscus leucopus probably results from a deficiency in the melatonin effector pathway and is not due to a disruption of circadian organization.  相似文献

The effect of a 1-hr light pulse, given at night, on the timing of the circadian rhythm in the plasma concentration of melatonin was examined in Soay rams to investigate the mechanisms involved in determining the duration of the nocturnal peak in melatonin secretion. Animals (n = 8) were housed under short days (LD 8:16) or long days (LD 16:8) and received a light pulse at various times of night. They were released into constant dim red light (DD) on day 1. Blood samples were collected hourly for 30 hr from 1000 hr on day 3, and the plasma concentration of melatonin was determined by radioimmunoassay to assess the timing of the melatonin peak. Control animals (n = 8) were maintained under the same conditions but received no light pulse. Under short days, a light pulse given early in the night caused a phase delay in the melatonin peak, and a light pulse given in the late night caused a phase advance. The mean duration of the melatonin peak was slightly reduced following a light pulse in the early or late night, and slightly increased following a pulse given near the middle of the night. Under long days, both light-pulse treatments given at night caused a phase delay in the melatonin peak, but there was no significant change in duration of the melatonin peak. The duration of the melatonin peak at day 3 under DD in the control animals was similar for all treatments, regardless of the previous entraining photoperiod (mean duration: 12.6-14.8 hr) and was similar to that under short days (14.6 hr), but was significantly longer than that under long days (8.2 hr). Information on the phase response curve in the Soay ram and on the period of the circadian oscillator governing the melatonin rhythm (c 23.0 hr under DD) predicts a close phase relationship between the end of the light phase and the onset of the melatonin peak as observed under normal 24-hr LD cycles. The current results also indicate that light acts to entrain the circadian rhythm influencing the onset and offset of melatonin secretion, and thus dictates the duration of the melatonin peak.  相似文献

The maximum growth rate of juvenile perch, PercaJuviatilis L., at different constant temperatures and in naturally changing day-lengths was studied in the laboratory. Standard metabolic rate was studied in starvation experiments at constant temperatures under short- and long-day conditions. Growth occurred in temperatures above 8 to 10°C. In winter, from mid-October until mid-April, maximal growth was considerably reduced and was relatively slow but constant. The standard metabolic rate was reduced c . 50% under short-day conditions. The seasonal change in metabolic rates, presumably controlled by an endogenous rhythm, was considered to be an adaptation to low food availability during the short winter days.  相似文献

In circadian rhythms, the shape of the phase response curves (PRCs) depends on the strength of the resetting stimulus. Weak stimuli produce Type 1 PRCs with small phase shifts and a continuous transition between phase delays and advances, whereas strong stimuli produce Type 0 PRCs with large phase shifts and a distinct break point at the transition between delays and advances. A stimulus of an intermediate strength applied close to the break point in a Type 0 PRC sometimes produces arrhythmicity. A PRC for the circannual rhythm was obtained in pupation of the varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci, by superimposing a 4-week long-day pulse (a series of long days for 4 weeks) over constant short days. The shape of this PRC closely resembles that of the Type 0 PRC. The present study shows that the PRC to 2-week long-day pulses was Type 1, and that a 4-week long-day pulse administered close to the PRC’s break point induced arrhythmicity in pupation. It is, therefore, suggested that circadian and circannual oscillators share the same mode in phase resetting to the stimuli.  相似文献

The role of the stemmata in photoperiodism has been examined in holometabolic insects, but the only reliable results in Coleoptera have been obtained in Leptocarabus kumagaii (Carabidae), the larvae of which do not respond to photoperiod without stemmata. In the present study, photoperiodism was examined in another coleopteran, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) (Cerambycidae), after surgical removal of the stemmata. Larvae reared under short-day conditions and transferred to long-day conditions on day 2 of the 5th instar pupated without further larval molts, whereas those continuously reared under short-day conditions underwent supernumerary molts and did not pupate. When the stemmata were removed on day 2 of the 5th instar, the larvae pupated under long-day conditions but did not do so under short-day conditions. However, under long-day conditions some underwent supernumerary molts before pupation. Larvae from which the sensilla trichodeum were removed showed a similar response to that of stemmata-deficient larvae, and larvae from which stemmata were removed at a younger stage (day 2 of the 4th instar) responded to photoperiod similarly to intact larvae. Thus, supernumerary molts under long-day conditions after removal of the stemmata were attributed to injury due to surgery, rather than a change in photoperiodic photoreception. Therefore, we conclude that larvae of P. hilaris show a photoperiodic response after removal of stemmata, in contrast to larvae of L. kumagaii.  相似文献

The cricket, Modicogryllus siamensis, shows clear photoperiodic responses at 25 degrees C in nymphal development. Under long-day conditions (LD16:8), nymphs became adults about 50 days after hatching, while under short-day conditions (LD8:16) the duration of nymphal stage extended to more than 130 days. Under constant dark conditions, two developmental patterns were observed: about 60% of crickets became adults slightly slower than under the long-day conditions, and the rest at later than 100 days after hatching, like those under the short-day conditions. When the compound eye was unilaterally removed on the 2nd day of hatching, an increase of molting and an extension of the nymphal period were observed under the long-day conditions, while under the short-day conditions, some crickets developed faster and others slower than intact crickets. These results suggest that this cricket receives photoperiodic information through the compound eye, that a pair of the compound eyes is required for a complete photoperiodic response, and that interaction between bilateral circadian clocks may be also involved in the response.  相似文献

Covering and surgical removal of the compound eyes were performed to localize photoreceptors for photoperiodic responses in the blow fly Protophormia terraenovae (Diptera, Calliphoridae). Adult females showed a long-day photoperiodic response to control reproductive diapause. When the compound eyes were bilaterally covered with silver paint, diapause incidence increased under diapause-preventing conditions, i.e., a long-day photoperiod and constant light, as though flies were kept under constant darkness. Neither silver painting on a medial region of the head capsule nor control painting in which both compound eyes were painted in a clear solvent caused significant effects on diapause incidence. Unilateral painting of the compound eye caused an increment of diapause incidence under constant light but no effects under a long-day photoperiod. When the compound eyes were bilaterally removed, all the flies developed their ovaries both under a long-day and a short-day photoperiod. Unilateral removal of the compound eye also caused ovarian development under a short-day photoperiod, whereas removal of one antennal lobe or all ocelli caused no effects on diapause incidence. Since P. terraenovae completely lost responsiveness to photoperiod after blinding of the compound eyes, it is likely that this fly perceives photoperiod through its compound eyes. Spring and summer morphs of Lycaena phlaeas daimio Seitz. are characterized by a wing colour of red and reddish brown, respectively.When newly ecdysed pupae destined to be summer or intermediate morphs (90 or 10%) by larval exposure to long days (long-day pupae) were decapitated or decerebrated, more than half of the operated pupae developed into intermediate and spring morphs (48 and 7%). But, in pupae destined to be spring, intermediate, or summer morphs (72, 22 or 4%) (short-day pupae) these operations did not produce any significant changes in the seasonal morph.Brains excised from newly ecdysed long-day pupae were transplanted into the abdomen of decapitated short-day pupae of the same age. The implants changed most recipients into summer and intermediate morphs (46 and 36%). However, when the brains of short-day pupae were used, no significant changes occurred in the seasonal morph.When long-day or short-day pupae were treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone just after pupation, they produced more reddish wings than those of the untreated or saline-treated controls. When the application was followed by chilling, already known to induce the reddish morph, the effects of both treatments are cumulative so that more reddish adults developed.The results indicate that the brain of long-day pupae secretes a factor causing the wing to be brownish. In the absence (or low titre) of the factor, most short-day pupae develop into spring or intermediate morphs. Furthermore, ecdysteroids make the wing more reddish, when applied to newly ecdysed pupae.  相似文献

通过人工补光和遮光处理,初步研究了光周期对狐尾藻生长和开花的影响。研究发现:8h短日照条件不利于狐尾藻的生长和花序形成,导致狐尾藻不能正常开花和结实;与自然日照长度(平均日照14h)条件下相比,16h长光照条件可以增加植株的高度和分枝数,形成更大的生物量;但24h全光照条件对生长有抑制作用。长光照条件下,狐尾藻花序形成时间和开花时间均比自然条件下延迟,形成花序的数目也显著较自然条件下的少,但长光照条件下形成的种子比自然条件下形成的种子具有更高的萌发率。  相似文献

Terrestrial slugs (Lehmannia valentiana) collected from a field in Osaka, southwestern Japan, were reared under long-day (16-h light and 8-h darkness, LD 16:8) or short-day conditions (LD 12:12) at 15, 20, or 25 degrees C for 60 days. Slugs reared under short-day conditions were heavier than those reared under long-day conditions; however, slugs reared at 15 degrees C gained more weight regardless of the photoperiodic condition. Gonads were significantly heavier under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions, and oogenesis and spermatogenesis were also induced under short-day conditions. Under short-day conditions, reproductive maturation was suppressed at 25 degrees C as compared with 15 and 20 degrees C, whereas under long-day conditions, lower temperatures induced reproductive maturation. In contrast, slugs reared under short-day conditions at 20 degrees C from the time of hatching gained more weight than those reared under long-day conditions at the same temperature. Moreover, short-day conditions induced reproductive maturation, similar to that observed in the field-collected slugs. In conclusion, short-day and low-temperature conditions promoted growth and reproductive maturation, whereas long-day and high-temperature conditions suppressed them in L. valentiana. Thus, L. valentiana reproduces from late autumn to spring in Osaka.  相似文献

The genus Nicotiana contains species and varieties that respond differently to photoperiod for flowering time control as day-neutral, short-day and long-day plants. In classical photoperiodism studies, these varieties have been widely used to analyse the physiological nature for floral induction by day length. Since key regulators for flowering time control by day length have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana by molecular genetic studies, it was intriguing to analyse how closely related plants in the Nicotiana genus with opposite photoperiodic requirements respond to certain flowering time regulators. SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 (SOC1) and FRUITFULL (FUL) are two MADS box genes that are involved in the regulation of flowering time in Arabidopsis. SOC1 is a central flowering time pathway integrator, whereas the exact role of FUL for floral induction has not been established yet. The putative Nicotiana orthologs of SOC1 and FUL, NtSOC1 and NtFUL, were studied in day-neutral tobacco Nicotiana tabacum cv Hicks, in short-day tobacco N. tabacum cv Hicks Maryland Mammoth (MM) and long-day N. sylvestris plants. Both genes were similarly expressed under short- and long-day conditions in day-neutral and short-day tobaccos, but showed a different expression pattern in N. sylvestris. Overexpression of NtSOC1 and NtFUL caused flowering either in strict short-day (NtSOC1) or long-day (NtFUL) Nicotiana varieties under non-inductive photoperiods, indicating that these genes might be limiting for floral induction under non-inductive conditions in different Nicotiana varieties.  相似文献
