Studies of infant rhesus macaques have generally reported sex differences in the frequency of expression of some behaviour patterns, such as rough-and-tumble play and socio-sexual mounting. In contrast, sex differences in other behaviour patterns, such as proximity to the mother, have been less consistantly reported. Using data on the behavioural development of infant rhesus macaques living in captive social groups, we have attempted to provide further evidence for, or against, sex differences in behaviour and to investigate the possible influence of maternal rank and parity on sex differences in infant behaviour and mother-infant interactions. The behaviour of 14 male and 20 female infants and their mothers was studied during the first six months of life, including measures of play behaviour socio-sexual mounting, and mother-infant interactions. Our data reveal that, on average, male infants exhibited more rough-and-tumble play and mounting than female infants, and also exhibited stationary play, chasing play, and initiated play more frequently than females. Such sex differences appear to be robust in macaques and have been reported in a variety of housing conditions. male and female infants did not differ in the amount of time spent at particular distances from their mothers, and mothers were not found to behave differently towards sons and daughters, using measures of restraint, rejection, and grooming. These results are in contrast to previous studies on singly-housed mother-infant pairs but similar to those on free-ranging populations. Mothers did behave differently towards their infants depending upon the mother's rank and previous number of offspring. These maternal characteristics may have significant consequences for the behavioural development of both male and female infant primates.  相似文献

Sex assessment of the femur: a test of a new method.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Simple and multiple discriminant functions using mid-shaft femoral circumference for the determination of sex were used to test a sexing method recently proposed by Black. The method was able to correctly assign sex for 82% of the sample, which consisted of 115 North American White femora of verified age and sex. Circumference proved as accurate as any other criteria that have been used in sexing the femur. This suggests a usefulness beyond the limited archaelogical scope originally proposed by Black.  相似文献

Background: Numerous clinical and experimental studies support the hypothesis that the intrauterine environment is an important determinant of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Objective: This review examined the mechanisms linking an adverse fetal environment and increased risk for chronic disease in adulthood with an emphasis on gender differences and the role of sex hormones in mediating sexual dimorphism in response to a suboptimal fetal environment. Methods: This review focuses on current findings from the PubMed database regarding animal models of fetal programming of hypertension, sex differences in phenotypic outcomes, and potential mechanisms in offspring of mothers exposed to an adverse insult during gestation. For the years 1988 to 2007, the database was searched using the following terms: fetal programming, intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight, sex differences, estradiol, testosterone, high blood pressure, and hypertension. Results: The mechanisms involved in the fetal programming of adult disease are multifactorial and include alterations in the regulatory systems affecting the long-tterm control of arterial pressure. Sex differences have been observed in animal models of fetal programming, and recent studies suggest that sex hormones may modulate activity of regulatory systems, leading to a lower incidence of hypertension and vascular dysfunction in females compared with males. Conclusions: Animal models of fetal programming provide critical support for the inverse relationship between birth weight and blood pressure. Experimental models demonstrate that sex differences are observed in the pathophysiologic response to an adverse fetal environment. A role for sex hormone involvement is strongly suggested, with modulation of the renin-angiotensin system as a possible mechanism.  相似文献

Sex differences in the prevalence of affective disorders might be attributable to different sex hormone milieu. The effects of short-term sex hormone deficiency on behavior, especially on anxiety have been studied in numerous animal experiments, mainly on young adult rats and mice. However, sex differences in aged animals and the effects of long-term hypogonadism are understudied. The aim of our study was to analyze sex differences in anxiety-like behavior in aged rats and to prove whether they can be attributed to endogenous sex hormone production in males. A battery of tests was performed to assess anxiety-like behavior in aged female, male and gonadectomized male rats castrated before puberty. In addition, the aged gonadectomized male rats were treated with a single injection of estradiol or testosterone or supplemented with estradiol for two-weeks. Female rats displayed a less anxious behavior than male rats in most of the conducted behavioral tests except the light-dark box. Long-term androgen deficiency decreased the sex difference in anxiety either partially (open field, PhenoTyper cage) or completely (elevated plus maze). Neither single injection of sex hormones, nor two-week supplementation of estradiol in gonadectomized aged male rats significantly affected their anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze. In conclusion, our results confirm sex differences in anxiety in aged rats likely mediated by endogenous testosterone production in males. Whether long-term supplementation with exogenous sex hormones could affect anxiety-like behavior in elderly individuals remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

This article presents an approach for estimating the sexual dimorphism of adult crania using three-dimensional geometric morphometric methods. The study sample consisted of 139 crania of known sex (73 males and 66 females) belonging to persons who lived during the first half of the 20th century in Bohemia. The three-dimensional co-ordinates of 82 ecto-cranial landmarks and 39 semi-landmarks covering the midsagittal curve of the cranial vault were digitised using a MicroScribe G2X contact digitiser. The purposes of the investigation were to define the regions of the cranium where sexual dimorphism is most pronounced and to investigate the effectiveness of this method for determining sex from the shape of the cranium. The results demonstrate that it is better to analyse apportionable parts of the cranium rather than the cranium as a whole. Significant sexual differences (significance was determined using multivariate analysis of variance) were noted in the shape of the midsagittal curve of the vault, upper face, the region of the nose, orbits, and palate. No differences were recorded either in the shape of the cranium as a whole or in the regions of the base and the neurocranium. The greatest accuracy in determining sex was found in the region of the upper face (100% of study subjects correctly classified) and the midsagittal curve of the vault (99% of study subjects correctly classified).  相似文献

Differences between the sexes and between the sides and the correlations between four quantitative characteristics of palmar dermatoglyphics in a sample population of 809 individuals (418 males and 391 females) from the city of Cagliari, Sardinia, are tested. Males have a greater number of ridges than females, shown by a greater a-b ridge count and A-d ridge count, and a more transverse slope of the main lines, shown by a greater main line index and papillary number. The left palm shows a greater number of ridges than the right palm between the A line and the triradius d and between the triradii a and b, with a lower main line index and papillary number. The a-b ridge count has a negative correlation with the main line index and with the papillary number and a positive one with the A-d ridge count; these correlations are greater in the left palms, especially in the males.  相似文献

Morphological development and sex of bovine in vitro-fertilized embryos.   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Bovine in vitro-fertilized embryos at the blastocyst stage were collected at days 7, 8, and 10 postinsemination and sex was determined via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to compare the embryonic development with the sex of the embryos. The percentages of males (sex ratio) after division of the embryos into three developmental groups were 68%, 48%, and 35% in the fast, intermediate, and slow groups, respectively (P = 0.014). The percentages of males on days 7, 8, and 10 were 60%, 40% and 33%, respectively (P = 0.043). The average sex ratio for the whole material was 50%. It is thus concluded that male bovine preimplantation embryos develop faster than female embryos.  相似文献

Background

The objective of this study was to assess whether sex-specific differences in fetal and infant growth exist.

Methods

This study was embedded in the Generation R Study, a population-based prospective birth cohort. In total, 8556 live singleton births were included. Fetal growth was assessed by ultrasound. During the first trimester, crown-rump-length (CRL) was measured. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) were assessed. Information on infant growth during the first 2 years of life was obtained from Community Health Centers and included HC, body weight and length.

Results

In the first trimester, male CRL was larger than female CRL (0.12 SD [95% CI 0.03,0.22]). From the second trimester onwards, HC and AC were larger in males than in females (0.30 SD [95% CI 0.26,0.34] and 0.09 SD [95% CI 0.05,0.014], respectively). However, FL in males was smaller compared to female fetuses (0.21 SD [95% CI 0.17,0.26]). Repeated measurement analyses showed a different prenatal as well as postnatal HC growth pattern between males and females. A different pattern in body weight was observed with a higher body weight in males until the age of 12 months where after females have a higher body weight.

Conclusions

Sex affects both fetal as well as infant growth. Besides body size, also body proportions differ between males and females with different growth patterns. This sexual dimorphism might arise from differences in fetal programming with sex specific health differences as a consequence in later life.

Visitors at two zoos were observed as they approached the reptile exhibits at the respective institutions. Both age and sex differences were discovered among several variables designed to measure avoidance behavior. At most ages, females more often refused to enter the exhibits than males. Females also spent less time within the exhibits than males. With respect to age differences, teen aged visitors refused to enter less often and spent more time in the exhibits than did individuals of other ages.  相似文献

Infant and juvenile rhesus macaques exhibit many sexually dimorphic behaviors, including rough and tumble play, mounting, and time spent with nonmother females. This study investigated sex differences in infant rhesus monkey separation-rejection vocalizations (SRVs), and the effects of altering the prenatal hormone environment on these differences. Pregnant females received exogenous androgen (testosterone enanthate), an androgen antagonist (flutamide), or vehicle injections for 30 or 35 days during the second (early) or third (late) trimester of pregnancy. Control females used a greater percentage of coos and arched screams than did control males. In contrast, males used a greater percentage of geckers and noisy screams than did females. Females also had longer SRV bouts, used more calls, and used more types of vocalizations than did males. Mothers were more likely to respond to the SRVs of male infants than to the SRVs of female infants. Prenatal flutamide treatment early in gestation reduced the likelihood that mothers would respond to their male offspring, but prenatal androgen treatment had no effect on response rates of mothers to female offspring. Early, but not late, androgen treatment produced females who vocalized in a male-typical manner. Similarly, early flutamide treatment produced males who displayed more female-typical SRVs. Late flutamide treatments of females produced as much masculinization of SRVs as did early androgen treatment in females. These results demonstrate sex differences in highly emotional vocalizations in infant rhesus macaques and provide evidence that the timing and form of prenatal hormonal exposure influence such vocalizations.  相似文献

In 300 Sienese skulls of known age and sex (146 male and 154 female) 6 modes of expression of bipartition of the hypoglossal canal were studied on the basis of a new scheme of notation that takes into account gradually increasing intensity. The analysis of data, including also the traditional method of notation confirms the criticisms expressed by various authors on the loss of information when the variability of this trait is neglected, especially with reference to age-dependent changes (hyperostotic effects).  相似文献

Modern lifestyle changes may result in site-specific alterations in the skeleton. Our aim was to determine sex and age differences in regional geometry at the mid-femur. Complete cross sections from 113 individuals aged 20-97 years from a modern Australian population were obtained. A further subsample of 24, in whom the precise orientation of specimens was known, was subsequently collected. Microradiographs were made of 100-microm sections and the bone was analyzed using image processing software (Optimas, Media Cybernetics). The periosteal boundary was extracted automatically and the centroid of the periosteal outline was calculated. Fourier shape analysis was used to delineate the endocortical surface. Radial and cortical widths in each quadrant were determined. The posterior was identified by the linea aspera, and the medial and lateral were indistinguishable and therefore grouped together. For analysis, the entire sample was divided into three groups: young (20-40 years), middle (41-60 years), and old (61+ years). Raw and height-normalized values were analyzed with SPSS using t-tests, analysis of variance, and Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) tests. The results show that with age the femoral mid-shaft in both sexes becomes larger and more circular, with a slight shift towards the anterior. Apposition is least on the posterior and resorption greatest on the anterior, the latter being particularly evident in postmenopausal females. The greatest sex differences are seen in the middle years, lessening again in the old. We conclude that differential circumferential modeling in response to functional and postural changes occurs in both sexes with age.  相似文献

The prevalence of activity-related breathlessness increases with age, particularly in women, but the specific underlying mechanisms have not been studied. This novel cross-sectional study was undertaken to examine the effects of age and sex, and their interaction, on the perceptual and ventilatory responses to incremental treadmill exercise in 73 healthy participants (age range 40-80 yr old) with normal pulmonary function. Age-related changes at a standardized oxygen uptake (Vo(2)) during exercise included significant increases in breathlessness ratings (Borg scale), ventilation (Ve), ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide, and the ratio of tidal volume (Vt) to dynamic inspiratory capacity (IC) (all P < 0.05). These changes were quantitatively similar in women (n = 39) and in men (n = 34). For the group as a whole, exertional breathlessness ratings increased as resting static inspiratory muscle strength diminished (P = 0.05), as exercise ventilation increased relative to capacity (P = 0.013) and as the Vt/IC ratio increased (P = 0.003) during exercise. Older women (60-80 yr old, n = 23) reported greater (P < 0.05) intensity of exertional breathlessness at a standardized Vo(2) and Ve than age-matched men (n = 16), despite similar age-related changes in ventilatory demand and dynamic ventilatory mechanics. These increases in breathlessness ratings in older women disappeared when sex differences in baseline maximal ventilatory capacity were accounted for. In conclusion, although increased exertional breathlessness with advancing age is multifactorial, contributory factors included higher ventilatory requirements during exercise, progressive inspiratory muscle weakness, and restrictive mechanical constraints on Vt expansion related to reduced IC. The sensory consequences of this age-related respiratory impairment were more pronounced in women, who, by nature, have relatively reduced maximal ventilatory reserve.  相似文献

Bones of the face and cranial vault meet at sutural boundaries. These sutures are of great importance for craniofacial growth. Although the effects that the sutures have on modulating craniofacial strains have been investigated, how sutural fusion influences primate craniofacial biomechanics and adaptation are less considered. Confounding this problem is the lack of any systematic data on patterns of craniofacial sutural fusion from animals of known age and sex. This study examined the status of 28 sutures in Macaca mulatta skulls from a collection of animals of known age and sex from Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. Survival analysis showed that most animals died before all sutures fused. There was high variation in the age at which individual sutures or sutural sections were fused in M. mulatta, and significant differences in the amount of sutural fusion among regions and between males and females. Intensive fusion of sutures took place between ages 5 and 15. Sutures in the facial area tended to be less fused than in the cranial vault. Between adolescence and adulthood, males tended to have more sutural fusion than females, especially in the facial area. These differences might be biomechanical adaptations during ontogeny to craniofacial sexual dimorphism. These findings enrich our understanding of variation in sutural morphology in rhesus monkeys. Comparative information across primate species is essential for understanding the biomechanics of craniofacial form throughout primate evolution.  相似文献

The present paper reports a normative study of the BAEPs recorded from 80 normal full-term newborns by using a rarefaction click at 70, 60, 40, 20 dB HL.Positive, negative peaks and the relative amplitudes were measured. Means, standard deviations and 95% and 99% confidence limits were calculated for each component, for positive and negative IPLs and amplitude ratios. A normality test distribution showed that each component had normal distribution except for wave PIII at 70 dB and at 60 dB HL beacause of its index of kurtosis and for IPLs PII-PIII and NII-NIII at 70 and 60 dB HL. MLRA was performed and significant statistical differences were found for sex, ears and intensities. Females had the latencies of waves PIII, PIV, PV, NII and NIV shorter than males. The BAEPs obtained from the left ear had shorter latencies for positive and negative peaks. Latencies, amplitude and morphology of the BAEPs vary with variations of the intensity. The IPLs PII-PV, PIII-PV and PIV-PV were not affected by changes of intensity.  相似文献
