Nest construction is a daily habit of independent orangutans for sleeping or resting. Data on their nests have been used in various ecological studies (e.g., density estimation, ranging behavior, evolution of material culture) because they are the most observable field signs. We investigated nest size and nest site features of Bornean orangutans in the wild during 10 months' fieldwork at three sites in East Kalimantan, Indonesia: Kutai National Park, Birawa, and Meratus. To examine individual variation, we followed 31 individual orangutans and recorded the 92 nests they made for nest size (diameter) and nest site features (height of nest above ground, tree species used for the nest site, the diameter and height of the tree, whether the nest was new or reused, and nest location within the tree). Analyses taking age–sex classes of the focal individuals into consideration showed significant age–sex differences in nest size and location, but not in nest height or nest tree features (diameter, height of tree, and height of lowest branch). Mature orangutans (adult females, unflanged and flanged males) made larger nests than immatures (juveniles and adolescents). Flanged male orangutans with larger nests used stable locations for nesting sites and reused old nests more frequently than immatures. The overall proportion of nests in open (exposed) locations was higher than in closed (sheltered) locations. Flanged males and immatures frequently made open nests, whereas adult females with an infant preferred closed locations. The good correspondence between nest size and age–sex classes indicates that nest size variation may reflect body size and therefore age–sex variation in the population. Am. J. Sex- and age-specific rates of killing unrelated persons of one’s own sex were computed for Canada (1974–1983), England/Wales (1977–1986), Chicago (1965–1981), and Detroit (1972) from census information and data archives of all homicides known to police. Patterns in relation to sex and age were virtually identical among the four samples, although the rates varied enormously (from 3.7 per million citizens per annum in England/Wales to 216.3 in Detroit). Men’s marital status was related to the probability of committing a same-sex, nonrelative homicide, but age effects remained conspicuous when married and unmarried men were distinguished. These findings and the treatment of age and sex effects by criminologists are discussed in the light of contemporary evolutionary psychological models of sex differences and life-span development. Same-sex homicides in which killer and victim are unrelated can be interpreted as an assay of competitive conflict. In every human society for which relevant information exists, men kill one another vastly more often than do women. Lethal interpersonal competition is especially prevalent among young men, which accords with many other aspects of life-span development in suggesting that sexual selection has maximized male competitive prowess and inclination in young adulthood.  相似文献

Ecological theory predicts that individual survival should vary between sex and age categories due to differences in allocation of nutritional resources for growth and reproductive activities. During periods of environmental stress, such relationships may be exacerbated, and affect sex and age classes differently. We evaluated support for hypotheses about the relative roles of sex, age, and winter and summer climate on the probability of mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) survival in coastal Alaska. Specifically, we used known-fates analyses (Program MARK) to model the effects of age, sex, and climatic variation on survival using data collected from 279 radio-marked mountain goats (118 M, 161 F) in 9 separate study areas during 1977–2008. Models including age, sex, winter snowfall, and average daily summer temperature (during Jul–Aug) best explained variation in survival probability of mountain goats. Specifically, our findings revealed that old animals (9+ yr) have lower survival than younger animals. In addition, males tended to have lower survival than females, though differences only existed among prime-aged adult (5–8 yr) and old (9+ yr) age classes. Winter climate exerted the strongest effects on mountain goat survival; summer climate, however, was significant and principally influenced survival during the following winter via indirect effects. Furthermore, old animals were more sensitive to the effects of winter conditions than young or prime-aged animals. These findings detail how climate interacts with sex and age characteristics to affect mountain goat survival. Critically, we provide baseline survival rate statistics across various age, sex, and climate scenarios. These data will assist conservation and management of mountain goats by enabling detailed, model-based demographic forecasting of human and/or climate-based population impacts. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Understanding diet variation is a major concern when developing conservation guidelines for threatened species, especially for marine predators whose prey availability can be reduced by commercial fisheries. Diet can vary in geographically structured populations due to variation in prey availability and within a location due to the effects of season, sex, age, and individual. However, these sources of variation are seldom considered together in dietary studies. We analyzed diet variation at the geographical and intrapopulation levels in the franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) by analyzing samples of stomach contents from individuals incidentally caught by artisanal fisheries. We investigated the geographical (Northern, Central, and Southern regions of the São Paulo State coast, Brazil) and intrapopulation effects of season, sex, and age. We used the leave‐one‐out cross‐validation method to test for significance of the proportional similarity index, which measures the overlap between diet compositions. We found that diet varied across different levels, from the geographical to the individual level, including the effects of season, sex, and age. Diet variation as a function of age suggests an ontogenetic diet shift. Our findings indicate that ecological processes within local stocks should inform management at the local geographic scale. Evidence for ecological differences between franciscana stocks is of great significance for the conservation of this threatened species.  相似文献

The differences between individuals at the centre and at the periphery of social groupings of birds have been demonstrated, but night-time roosts have received little attention. Here, the effects of age, sex and physical condition on the structure of Starling roosts were investigated. It was found that the dispersion of different age and sex categories was heterogeneous; proportionately more adult males occurred in the centre compared with the periphery, and proportionately more first-year females occurred on the periphery compared with the centre. Birds in the centre were heavier than peripheral ones irrespective of differences in body-size. We propose that the centre of the roost is the preferred location and that the observed dispersion reflects dominance.  相似文献

Harvesting may be a potent driver of demographic change and contemporary evolution, which both may have great impacts on animal populations. Research has focused on changes in phenotypic traits that are easily quantifiable and for which time series exist, such as size, age, sex, or gonad size, whereas potential changes in behavioural traits have been under‐studied. Here, we analyse potential drivers of long‐term changes in a behavioural trait for the Northeast Arctic stock of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua, namely choice of spawning location. For 104 years (1866–1969), commercial catches were recorded annually and reported by county along the Norwegian coast. During this time period, spawning ground distribution has fluctuated with a trend towards more northerly spawning. Spawning location is analysed against a suite of explanatory factors including climate, fishing pressure, density dependence, and demography. We find that demography (age or age at maturation) had the highest explanatory power for variation in spawning location, while climate had a limited effect below statistical significance. As to potential mechanisms, some effects of climate may act through demography, and explanatory variables for demography may also have absorbed direct evolutionary change in migration distance for which proxies were unavailable. Despite these caveats, we argue that fishing mortality, either through demographic or evolutionary change, has served as an effective driver for changing spawning locations in cod, and that additional explanatory factors related to climate add no significant information.  相似文献

Determinants of the sex ratio at birth: review of recent literature   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
A Chahnazarian 《Social biology》1988,35(3-4):214-235
The fact that more boys are born than girls (104-107 boys for every 100 girls) has been known since 1662. Factors determining the sex ratio at birth rate are of 2 kinds: factors determining the primary sex ratio, i.e., sex ratio at conception, and factors determining the survival of the embryo in utero. Y-bearing and X-bearing sperm may have different motility or different survival time. The age of the ovum at fertilization and the chemical balance of the female genital tract have an effect on sex ratio at conception. High levels of circulating gonadotropins may imply a lower sex ratio at birth as well as a higher rate of dizygotic twinning. Male conception also appears to be higher early and late in the menstrual cycle. The fact that women exposed to higher coital rates conceive earlier in the menstrual cycle may account for the greater number of boys born during wars. Prenatal male mortality is reportedly highest between gestational months 3-5, lower between months 6-8, and higher again st term. Also, immunological interaction between mother and embryo may account for some sex selective spontaneous abortions. 3 sociodemographic determinants of sex ratio at birth are thought to be maternal age, paternal age, and birth order. Higher prenatal male mortality may be correlated with socioeconomic conditions, since higher socioeconomic status lowers prenatal mortality in general. The effects of parental age, birth order, and parity are less clear. Race is also a factor, since the sex ratio at birth for blacks is lower (102-104) than for whites (106). 14 univariate and 19 multivariate studies of effects of maternal age, paternal age, parity, birth order, race, and socioeconomic status on sex ratio at birth, with sample sizes in the millions from various countries have been analyzed. More boys are born to younger parents, and lower order births have a higher proportion of males than do higher order births. In the multivariate analyses, when the effects of paternal and and birth order are controlled for, the effect of maternal age weakens, and the effect of paternal age appears to be stronger. The effect of birth order remains but is very small, and the effect of race persists independent of any effect of other variables. Maternal age, parity, and birth order are positively correlated with proportion of male stillbirths. The results of the multivariate analyses show all of the effects to be very small, but that maternal age has no effect on sex ratio at birth; paternal age and birth order have a negative effect, and the racial effect persists independent of any other effect. The racial effect is clearly biologically determined at conception because blacks have higher levels of circulating gonadotropin and therefore a higher probability of conceiving girls. Parents in higher socioeconomic classes are more likely to have sons, but the effect is largely due to the excess male mortality during most of the gestational period.  相似文献

A total of 1,153 red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, was examined for strobilae of Echinococcus multilocularis from 2 geographic regions in North Dakota during 1965 through 1972. Echinococcus multilocularis was found in 184 (16%) of these foxes. The data including date and location of collection, age and sex of the host, and presence or absence of the cestode were used to assess the relative influence of collection interval (sampling period), climatic season, geographic location, and age and sex of the host on the prevalence of the adult cestode. The rate of infection varied significantly with collection interval, which was probably attributable to annual changes in the overall environment. Seasonally, the highest prevalences were observed during summer (32.4%) followed by spring (25.3%), autumn (13.7%) and winter (6.4%). Differences in prevalence between adult and juvenile foxes and that between male and female foxes were not significant. A 3-factor analysis of variance showed the order of importance of the significant variables to be collection interval, season, and the interaction of collection interval and season. A 4-factor ANOVA, which in addition to the above variables included geographic location, showed that the collection interval-location interaction had significant effects on prevalence. Also, evidence is presented that suggests that density of the definitive host may in part be responsible for annual fluctuation in prevalence.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of a large number of sex pheromone components of various moth species can be explained by invoking a Δ 11-desaturation of common fatty acids. A Δ11-desaturase system from Trichoplusia ni, the cabbage looper moth, is identified and partially purified. Some of its properties are defined and compared with those of the ubiquitous Δ-9 desaturase enzyme. Similarities between the two systems include subcellular location (microsomal), substrate specificity (16- and 18-carbon acids), and lack of sensitivity to carbon monoxide, while differences include cofactor preference (NADH rather than NADPH), sensitivity to cyanide ion, pH optimum (7.4-7.8 vs 6.8-7.2), and location in the organism (in the pheromone gland compared to generally distributed). The effects of insect age were also investigated.  相似文献

Background: Loss of a child has been associated with elevated mortality rates in parents. Studies that focus on the influence of the child's sex on parental mortality are sparse. Objective: The main objective of the present study was to reevaluate the combined impact of the parents' and child's sex within a larger sample and focus on adverse health effects as an objective measure of possible long-term effects of maladaptive grief reactions. Methods: For the time period between 1980 and 1996, all children in Denmark who died before 18 years of age were identified. Parents who had lost a child were identified as the bereaved (exposed) group. Mortality rates of parents within the same-sex parent-child dyad were compared with mortality rates of parents within the opposite-sex parent-child dyad. Separate analyses were performed for bereaved fathers and for bereaved mothers, and additional analyses were conducted to examine the sole effect of the child's sex, irrespective of parental gender. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs.Results: The study population consisted of 21,062 parents (mean age at entry, 32 years; 11,221 mothers, 9841 fathers). Bereaved parents who had lost a child of the same sex had similar overall mortality as bereaved parents who had lost a child of the opposite sex (HR = 1.02; 95% CI, 0.85–1.22). Similar findings were observed for mortality due to natural death (HR = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.78–1.18) or mortality due to unnatural death (HR = 1.22; 95% CI, 0.84–1.77). Bereaved fathers who had lost a son had similar mortality as those bereaved by the death of a daughter (HR = 1.10; 95% CI, 0.86–1.40). Bereaved mothers who had lost a daughter had similar mortality as those bereaved by the death of a son (HR = 0.93; 95% CI, 0.70–1.22). Bereaved parents who had lost a son had mortality rates similar to those who had lost a daughter (HR = 1.09; 95% CI, 0.91–1.31). The interactions between grouping variable and sex of parents were not significant, indicating that the differential effect of losing a child based on sex of the child was not greater for fathers than for mothers. Conclusions: The results of this study revealed no significant effect of sex of the deceased child on mortality in these bereaved parents. The results might differ if this study was replicated in a population with a different grief culture and, more importantly, different gender schemas.  相似文献

The dental casts made from Aboriginal children during the course of a longitudinal growth study in Central Australia provided material for analyzing tooth wear under known environmental conditions. The wear facets produced on the occlusal surfaces were clearly preserved on the dental stone casts and recorded the progress of enamel attrition from ages 6 to 18. These casts were photographed and traced by electronic planimetric methods that automatically recorded the location and size of wear facets on the first and second permanent molars. These areas of worn tooth surface were compared to the total tooth surface. The worn surface was regressed on age to calculate wear rates of each tooth. Discriminant analyses were also performed to determine the significance of dental attrition differences between the sexes at each age group. The total wear on each tooth was highly correlated with age as expected but females wore their teeth at a significantly higher rate than males. The mandibular molars wore more rapidly than maxillary teeth in both sexes. The discriminant analysis successfully grouped 91% of the cases according to age and sex. Pattern of wear, the location, and size of wear facets also differed between age groups and sex. The questions of why there is a difference between male and female wear or why there is greater wear on one arch or arch region have no ready answers. The differing rates and pattern of dental wear do suggest that arch shape and growth rates may be the answer though it has yet to be tested. However, the occlusal surface wear is useful for age estimation in a population and provides a record of shifting masticatory forces during growth.  相似文献

In principle, parental relatedness, parental age, and the age of parental gametes can all influence offspring fitness through inbreeding depression and the parental effects of organismal and postmeiotic gametic senescence. However, little is known about the extent to which these factors interact and contribute to fitness variation. Here, we show that, in Drosophila melanogaster, offspring viability is strongly affected by a three‐way interaction between parental relatedness, parental age, and gametic age at successive developmental stages. Overall egg‐to‐adult viability was lowest for offspring produced with old gametes of related, young parents. This overall effect was largely determined at the pupa–adult stage, although three‐way interactions between parental relatedness, parental age and gametic age also explained variation in egg hatchability and larva‐pupa survival. Controlling for the influence of parental and gametic age, we show that inbreeding depression is negligible for egg hatchability but significant at the larva–pupa and pupa–adult stages. At the pupa–adult stage, where offspring could be sexed, parental relatedness, parental age, and gametic age interacted differently in male and female offspring, with daughters suffering higher inbreeding depression than sons. Collectively, our results demonstrate that the architecture of offspring fitness is strongly influenced by a complex interaction between parental effects, inbreeding depression and offspring sex.  相似文献

Neuroblastoma is the third commonest tumour of childhood inthe UK, having an incidence rate of 1 in 10 500. Incidence andmortality rates were calculated for the whole of the UnitedKingdom for a period of at least 10 years. The effects of age, stage and regional health authority at diagnosis, year of birth, year of diagnosis and sex on the incidence and mortality rateswere determined. Incidence was found to vary with age and stageat diagnosis, and there was a significant interaction betweenage and stage. A difference in incidence between the sexes wasalso discovered. Mortality was found to vary with age and stageat diagnosis, athough no interaction was found. The findingthat mortality has fallen in recent years may be an artefactdue to recent records being necessarily incomplete. Survivalstatistics were calculated for the UK and certain European cases, and the effects on survival of age, stage, region at diagnosisand sex were determined. Survival varied with age and stageat diagnosis, region of diagnosis and sex, although it was onlypossible to demonstrate significant differences between certainof the stages. It was impossible to test for any interactionterm by the methods used.  相似文献

Heritability studies of BMI, based upon twin samples, have identified genetic and shared environmental components of BMI, but have been largely silent about the nonshared environmental factors. Intrauterine factors have been identified as having significant long‐term effects on BMI and may be a critical source of nonshared environmental influence. Extant studies based on samples of either unrelated individuals or twins cannot separate the effects of genetics, shared environments, and nonshared intrauterine conditions because the one lacks variation in the degree of relatedness and the other has insufficient variation in intrauterine conditions. This study improves upon these prior studies by using a large, sibling‐based sample to examine heritability, shared environmental, and nonshared intrauterine influences on BMI during two age periods in childhood (6–8 years; 12–14 years). The primary interest was in determining the effects of the intrauterine environment on BMI as a component of the nonshared environment and in determining whether there were sex‐specific differences in heritability and/or in the intrauterine factors. These were estimated using regression‐based techniques introduced by DeFries and Fulker. Heritability of BMI was estimated to be 0.20–0.28 at 6–8 years and 0.46–0.61 at 12–14 years. Differences in heritability were found at 12–14 years between same‐sex as compared to mixed‐sex pairs. The shared environmental effect was significant at 6–8 years but insignificant at 12–14 years. Differences in birth weight were significant in all groups at 6–8 years suggesting long‐term effects of the nonshared intrauterine environment; at 12–14 years, birth weight was no longer significant for girls.  相似文献

We investigate the age and sex distribution of genetic fitness under mutation–selection balance by means of simple one-locus two-allele models. We find that the extent of age and sex variation in the mutation load is very dependent on the average effect of new mutations. If the average heterozygote selective effect of new mutations is large, then age and sex differences may constitute a significant fraction of the total load, and be significant as compared to standing genetic variation. Whether the mutation load will increase or decrease with age depends on the age- and sex-specific effects of the new mutations, and on the rate of accumulation of mutations in the germ line as individuals age. We argue that the load will most likely increase with age in animals with continuous germ-cell division throughout life, and that this will occur even when mutations have unconditionally deleterious effects. We show that a male-biased mutation rate is likely to result in both a male-biased mutation load and a load that increases with male age. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The patterns of immunity conferred by host sex or age represent two sources of host heterogeneity that can potentially shape the evolutionary trajectory of disease. With each host sex or age encountered, a pathogen's optimal exploitative strategy may change, leading to considerable variation in expression of pathogen transmission and virulence. To date, these host characteristics have been studied in the context of host fitness alone, overlooking the effects of host sex and age on the fundamental virulence–transmission trade‐off faced by pathogens. Here, we explicitly address the interaction of these characteristics and find that host sex and age at exposure to a pathogen affect age‐specific patterns of mortality and the balance between pathogen transmission and virulence. When infecting age‐structured male and female Daphnia magna with different genotypes of Pasteuria ramosa, we found that infection increased mortality rates across all age classes for females, whereas mortality only increased in the earliest age class for males. Female hosts allowed a variety of trade‐offs between transmission and virulence to arise with each age and pathogen genotype. In contrast, this variation was dampened in males, with pathogens exhibiting declines in both virulence and transmission with increasing host age. Our results suggest that differences in exploitation potential of males and females to a pathogen can interact with host age to allow different virulence strategies to coexist, and illustrate the potential for these widespread sources of host heterogeneity to direct the evolution of disease in natural populations.  相似文献

Research on the effects of enrichment would do well to consider carefully location and/or visitor habituation effects on animal behavior. In the present series of studies, 19,847 visitors to the Sacramento Zoo were counted and categorized by age and sex as they appeared at each of three mangabey cages having only slightly different locations within the zoo. A cage nearest the exit/entrance received significantly more visitors (had greater attracting power) than did a cage away from the exit but on the main path, while the latter cage had more patronage than a cage that was only a few feet off the main walkway. These effects persisted through both subtle and complete changes in the animal inhabitants of the cages. These very strong effects, which are similar to those described by Melton's (Pychological Bulletin 30:720, 721, 1983; Museum News 14(3):6–8, 1936) classic “exit gradient” as well as to other possible effects of simple location (e.g., visitor habituation) are particularly important for species that are behaviorally responsive to visitors.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of maternal age, diet, and size on offspring sex ratio were investigated for the solitary egg parasitoid, Anaphes nitens Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), both outdoors, during the winter, and inside a climatic chamber under favourable constant conditions. During the winter of 2005–2006, each of seven groups containing 40 1‐day‐old females was mated and randomly distributed among two treatments: (treatment 1) a droplet of undiluted honey ad libitum + one fresh egg capsule of the snout beetle Gonipterus scutellatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) as host; (treatment 2) drops of water + one fresh egg capsule of G. scutellatus. We recorded the lifetime fecundity, the daily sex allocation, and the lifetime offspring sex ratio to study the existence of a relationship with maternal characteristics. Moreover, we assessed the effect of location (outdoors vs. indoors) and group (groups are representative of early, mid, and late winter) on sex ratio. The most important factor that biased the sex ratio was maternal body size: larger females of both treatments produced more female offspring. As females of A. nitens could gain more advantage than males from body size, larger mothers have a higher fitness return if they produce more daughters. The effect of the treatment was significant: starved females produced more females. Location and group were not significant. Fecundity and sex ratio were age dependent. Old mothers that received honey (treatment 1) had fewer offspring and a more male‐biased offspring sex ratio, probably due to reproductive senescence and sperm depletion. Starved females (treatment 2) experienced reproductive decline earlier, perhaps because they invested more energy in maintenance rather than in reproduction.  相似文献

This study performed a multifactor analysis of the effects of the provision of toys, cage location, and cat characteristics (activity level, age, sex, and coat color) on 111 cats available for adoption in a nonhuman animal shelter. The analysis revealed a greater adopter viewing of cats housed at eye level and of those with toys—even though the toys did not affect the cats' behavior. Adopters viewed cats who were active for longer periods of time. The active cats were more likely to be adopted during the 16-week study than cats who were less active.  相似文献

Sexual selection drives the evolution of traits involved in the competition for mates. Although considerable research has focused on the evolution of sexually selected traits, their underlying genetic architecture is poorly resolved. Here I address the pleiotropic effects and genomic locations of sexually selected genes. These two important characteristics can impose considerable constraints on evolvability and may influence our understanding of the process of sexual selection. Theoretical models are inconsistent regarding the genomic location of sexually selected genes. Models that do not incorporate pleiotropic effects often predict sex linkage. Conversely, sex linkage is not explicitly predicted by the condition-dependent model (which considers pleiotropic effects). Evidence largely based on reciprocal crosses supports the notion of sex linkage. However, although they infer genetic contribution, reciprocal crosses cannot identify the genes or their pleiotropic effects. By surveying the genome of Drosophila melanogaster, I provide evidence for the genomic location and pleiotropic effects of 63 putatively sexually selected genes. Interestingly, most are pleiotropic (73%), and they are not preferentially sex linked. Their pleiotropic effects include fertility, development, life span, and viability, which may contribute to condition and/or fitness. My findings may also provide evidence for the capture of genetic variation in condition via the pleiotropic effects of sexually selected genes.  相似文献
