The frequency of cyanogenesis of 48 species of vascular plants was examined by testing 30 individuals from five populations of each species for release of cyanide. The rate at which cyanide was released and the amount of cyanide released varied widely among individuals of a population and among populations of a species. For many taxa, the frequency of cyanogenesis was highly variable among populations. Of the species examined, 20 have not been reported previously as being cyanogenic. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Limnology was not recognized as a distinct scienceat the time of the great post-Civil War western explorationsof Hayden, Wheeler, King, and Powell. However, these and someearlier explorations made observations in certain branches ofnatural science that would become integral parts of limnologicalscience. Sampling for livestock-associated Staphylococcus aureus (LA-SA) in the United States is haphazard. The diversity of LA-S. aureus in the U.S. appears to be greater than in other countries. During a four-year survey in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia of the fungi associated with peanut shells and seeds 70 genera and 146 species of fungi were identified. Twenty-seven genera and 60 species were isolated from peanut fruits for the first time. Nine genera are Phycomycetes, 17 are Ascomycetes, and 44 are Deuteromycetes. A total of 110 genera and about 200 species of fungi have now been reported from peanuts. Viable cell counts were used to estimate density at all sites by using Rimler-Shotts medium, a differential presumptive medium for A. hydrophila. Temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, and turbidity were measured simultaneously with water sample collection. The density of A. hydrophila was higher in lotic than in lentic systems. Saline systems had higher densities of A. hydrophila than did freshwater systems. A. hydrophila could not be isolated from extremely saline, thermal, or polluted waters, even though it was found over wide ranges of salinity, conductivity, temperature, pH, and turbidity. Of the water quality parameters measured, only conductivity was significantly regressed with density of A. hydrophila. 相似文献

An hypothesis was proposed that selenium concentration in the environment, as measured by the uptake of this element by forage crops, exerted an apparent effect on cancer incidence, such that cancer mortality in the continental United States was lower where the selenium concentration was high than where the concentration was low. The purpose of the present study is to test this hypothesis for statistical significance and to discover whether the apparent pattern of cancer mortality in relation to selenium distribution holds true with respect to all ages. Two main types of statistical analyses were employed: analysis of variance and trend analysis, both applied to all age groups and both sexes. Data presented in this paper show that significant interactions exist between selenium distribution and sex in relation to deaths caused by cancer of the digestive organs, respiratory organs, and the breast. Geographic variations in selenium may be viewed as variations in the intake of this element in the diet. A significant interaction may thus suggest that the particular cancer in question has in its origin a dietary factor that includes some measure of selenium intake. A discussion involving contributions from various disciplines is presented to explain the significant results reported in this paper. This paper shows that a pattern exists between the geographical distribution of selenium using forage crops as a guide for dietary intake and cancer mortality (ICD 140-209,150-159,160-163, and 174) such that an inverse relationship exists between selenium concentration in an area and cancer mortality in the same area. 相似文献

Physical attractiveness has been associated with mating behavior, but its role in reproductive success of contemporary humans has received surprisingly little attention. In the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (1244 women, 997 men born between 1937 and 1940), we examined whether attractiveness assessed from photographs taken at age 18 years predicted the number of biological children at age 53–56 years. In women, attractiveness predicted higher reproductive success in a nonlinear fashion, so that attractive (second highest quartile) women had 16% and very attractive (highest quartile) women 6% more children than their less attractive counterparts. In men, there was a threshold effect so that men in the lowest attractiveness quartile had 13% fewer children than others who did not differ from each other in the average number of children. These associations were partly but not completely accounted for by attractive participants' increased marriage probability. A linear regression analysis indicated relatively weak directional selection gradient for attractiveness (β=0.06 in women, β=0.07 in men). These findings indicate that physical attractiveness may be associated with reproductive success in humans living in industrialized settings. 相似文献

Adrenal function and aging have been the object of intense interest in recent years. In this study we analyzed morning (08:00 h) serum cortisol concentrations from a sample of Chinese subjects aged from 31 to 110 years. These levels differed according to age, health status and sex, although the sex difference was confirmed only among the healthy elderly. These results suggest that age (older than 60 years), disease and male sex are associated with increased morning serum cortisol levels in a Chinese population. 相似文献

Births in Greene County, Alabama for the years 1980–1984 were examined and an overall seasonal trend was found with a peak from August through November. This trend was found to be most pronounced among women greater than 24 yeas old, and among multiparous women, and to be negatively correlated with seasonal variations in temperature and daylight. The phenomenon is likely multifactorial in origin, with sociocultural factors playing a considerable role. The influence of increasing maternal age and parity in the expression of the seasonal trend may be a function of age-related changes in families, with nuclear families acting as the most powerful potentiators of seasonality. 相似文献

Flow cytometric sorting for the preselection of sex has progressed considerably in the 20 years since its inception. This technique has allowed the production of pre-sexed offspring in a multitude of species and become a commercial success in cattle around the world. However, due to the stress inherent to the sex-sorting process, sex-sorted spermatozoa are widely recognized as functionally compromised in terms of their fertilizing lifespan within the female reproductive tract as a result of reduced motility and viability and changed functional state. These characteristics, when compared to non-sorted controls, are manifest in vivo as lower fertility. However, improvements to the technology and a greater understanding of its biological impact have facilitated recent developments in sheep, showing sex-sorting is capable of selecting a functionally superior population in terms of both in vitro and in vivo function. These results are reviewed in the context of recent developments in other species and the reasons for success after artificial insemination with sex-sorted ram spermatozoa are discussed. 相似文献

The effect of gene flow on Hispanic populations from different geographic regions of the United States was analyzed using six autosomal DNA markers (LDLR, GYPA, HBGG, D7S8, GC, and HLA-DQA). By region of sampling, the Hispanic populations showed different ancestry contributions, from a trihybrid structure with European, Native American, and African contributions (California, Nevada, Florida, New Jersey, and Virginia) to a dihybrid structure with European and American contributions (Southwest population) or European and African contributions (Pennsylvania and Southeast population). These findings allowed us to define two regional groups, the West and the East. In the former, Native American contributions ranged from 35.58% to 57.87%; in the East region the values ranged from 0% to 21.27%. An African influence was similar in both regions, ranging from 0% to 17.11%, with a tendency of increasing in the East region. These data reflect the different origins of the Hispanic populations that led to the present ones. In the West, Hispanics are mostly of Mexican origin, and in the East, they are predominantly of Cuban and Puerto Rican origin. 相似文献

A phylogenetic grouping of 48 different isolates of milky disease bacteria isolated in the United States was determined using genomic RFLP analysis and 16S rDNA sequence comparison. A clear distinction between Paenibacillus popilliae isolates and Paenibacillus lentimorbus isolates was evident from the results of each procedure. The P. popilliae isolates segregated into two phylogenetic groups and the P. lentimorbus isolates segregated into three phylogenetic groups. In the United States, P. popilliae group 1 was generally isolated from insects collected west of the Appalachian Mountains. P. popilliae group 2 was only isolated from insects collected east of the Appalachian Mountains. P. lentimorbus groups 1 and 2 were obtained from insects collected west and south of the Appalachians. P. lentimorbus group 3 was identified in insects collected east of the mountains. From five different locations in Connecticut, 12 milky disease bacterial isolates were classified as P. popilliae and three were classified as P. lentimorbus. Except for one isolate, all P. popilliae isolates were of phylogenetic group 2. The three P. lentimorbus strains were isolated from diseased insects that had been collected from a localized area in the state. These three strains formed a separate phylogenetic grouping (i.e., group 3) of P. lentimorbus and, based on 16S rDNA sequence comparisons, were most similar to the newly identified P. lentimorbus Semadara strain recently isolated in Japan. The adaptive significance of the chromosomal polymorphism of Drosophila buzzati has been studied by means of fitness component analysis in an original population from Argentina. The results show evidence of selection acting through pupal viability, longevity (adult viability) and fecundity on the second chromosome polymorphism, and through pupal viability and virility on the fourth chromosome polymorphism. Changes in chromosomal inversion frequencies throughout the life-cycle suggested an endocyclic pattern of directional selection, which at first seems to be the only detectable mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the polymorphism. However, slow, long-term frequency changes cannot be ruled out. The way in which endocyclic selection acts on this population is different from that in a colonized population previously studied; that is, different fitness components are involved in the maintenance of chromosomal polymorphism. The possible factors that may explain these differences are discussed. 相似文献
