An experimental method has been developed to analyse muscular forces and torques in vivo during isometric flexion of the elbow in small monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). A mini-transducer was built with a view to measure forces in situ, without cutting tendons. The positions of tendon insertions were measured on anatomical parts, then integrated in a series of calculations aiming of deducing the lever arms of forces to be included in a torque equilibrium relationship. Muscle activity of the three main flexors was measured for five angles of isometric flexion between 70 degrees and 110 degrees, 0 degrees corresponding to the full extended forearm. The analysed signals were selected using physiological and biomechanical criteria. Then, results corresponding to force participation, and torque participations, were worked out; they are presented and discussed in the present paper.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of practicing a dynamic, goal-directed movement reveals significant changes in kinematics. Modeling can provide insight into the alterations in muscle activity, associated with the kinematic adaptations, and reveal the potential motor unit (MU) firing patterns that underlie those changes. In this paper, a previously developed muscle model and software (Raikova and Aladjov, Journal of Biomechanics, 35, 2002) have been used to investigate changes in MU control, while practicing fast elbow flexion to a target in the horizontal plane. The first trial (before practice) and the last trial (after extensive practice) of two subjects have been simulated. The inputs for the simulation were the calculated external moments at the elbow joint. The external moments were countered by the action of three flexor muscles and two extensor ones. The muscles have been modeled as a mixture of MUs of different types. The software has chosen the MU firing times necessary to accomplish the movement. The muscle forces and MUs firing statistics were then calculated. Three hypotheses were tested and confirmed: (1) peak muscle forces and antagonist co-contraction increase during training; (2) there is an increase in the firing frequency and the synchronization between MUs; and (3) the recruitment of fast-twitch MUs dominates the action.  相似文献

Changes in the kinematic and electromyographic characteristics that occur while learning to move as fast as possible have been studied experimentally. Experimental investigation of what happens to the individual motor units (MUs) is more difficult. Access to each MU is impossible, and the recruitment and force developing properties of all individual MUs cannot be known. Thus, what is currently known about MU firing is based on experiments that have recorded relatively few MUs compared to what exists in the entire muscle. A recently developed muscle model (Raikova and Aladjov, 2002, J. Biomechanics, 35, 1123-1135) composed of MUs with different properties can be used for such investigation. The process of learning fast elbow flexion in the horizontal plane was simulated and the results were compared with experimentally measured data. Comparing the simulation results of the very first trial of a particular subject with those of the last trail (at the end of the learning process), it can be concluded that the speed of limb motion and muscle forces increase initially as a result of the more synchronous MUs activation and the increase of firing rate of active MUs. Further improvement necessitated an appreciable reduction in the motor task requirements (i.e. less muscle force and less MUs' activity) set in the computational algorithm by optimization criteria. The fact that muscles are composed of different Motor Units (MUs) is often neglected when investigating motor control by macro models of human musculo-skeletal-joint systems. Each muscle is associated with one control signal. This simplification leads to difficulties when mechanical and electrical manifestations of the muscle activity are juxtaposed. That is why a new approach for muscle modelling was recently proposed (Journal of Biomechanics 2002;35:1123-1135). It is based on MUs twitches and a Hierarchical Genetic Algorithm (HGA) is implemented for choosing the moments of activation of the individual MUs, thus simulating the control of the nervous system. Its basic benefit is obtaining the complete information about the mechanical and activation behaviour of all MUs, respectively muscles, during the whole motion. Its possibilities are demonstrated when simulating fast elbow flexion. Three flexor and two extensor muscles, each consisting of approximately real number of different types of MUs, are modelled. The task is highly indeterminate and the optimization is performed according to a fitness function that is an assessed combination of criteria (minimal deviation from the given joint moment, minimal total muscle force and minimal MUs activation). The influence of the weight of the first criterion (the one that reflects the importance of the movement accuracy on the predicted results), is investigated. Two variants concerning the muscle MUs structure are also compared: each muscle is composed of four distinct types MUs and the MUs twitch parameters are uniformly distributed.  相似文献

The maintenance of steady contractions is required in many daily tasks. However, there is little understanding of how various lower limb configurations influence the ability to maintain force. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the influence of joint angle on various lower-limb constant force contractions. Nineteen adults performed knee extension, knee flexion, and ankle plantarflexion isometric force contractions to 11 target forces, ranging from 2 to 95% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at 2 angles. Force variability was quantified with mean force, standard deviation, and the coefficient of variation of force output. Non-linearities in force output were quantified with approximate entropy. Curve fitting analyses were performed on each set of data from each individual across contractions to further examine whether joint angle interacts with global functions of lower-limb force variability. Joint angle had significant effects on the model parameters used to describe the force-variability function for each muscle contraction (p < 0.05). Regularities in force output were more explained by force level in smaller angle conditions relative to the larger angle conditions (p < 0.05). The findings support the notion that limb configuration influences the magnitude and regularities in force production. Biomechanical factors, such as joint angle, along with neurophysiological factors should be considered together in the discussion of the dynamics of constant force production.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of changing internal mechanical variables and task demands on muscle activity and torque production during high effort isometric contractions of the elbow flexors. The effect of adding a 50% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of supination to an MVC of elbow flexion was studied over a range of angles from 30° to 110° of elbow flexion. Surface EMGs were recorded from the biceps brachii (BIC), brachioradialis (BRAD) and triceps brachii (TRI) of 10 healthy subjects. BIC was the only muscle to show a consistent trend of increasing root mean square (rms) EMG with increasing elbow flexion angle. BIC activity also remained constant or increased with the addition of the supination task at all angles. In contrast, BRAD showed decreased activity when supination was added at several angular positions. Maximal flexion torque was reduced when the second task of submaximal supination was added. This torque reduction was statistically significant at all angles except 70° and appeared related to the decreased contribution from BRAD. In a small subset of subjects, however, BRAD activity did not decrease when the second degrees of freedom (df) task was added. These subjects exhibited higher flexion torques averaged over task than the majority, at all angles except 30°. These data support the view that internal mechanical considerations influence the manner in which the central nervous system (CNS) distributes activity to muscular synergists in response to altered task demands. Further, subject-specific patterns exist which must be recognized if these findings are to be incorporated in training or rehabilitation programmes.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the mean power frequency (MPF) of the electromyogram (EMG) power spectrum increases gradually with force of contraction and that this increase is a function of the fiber-type content of the muscle investigated and the inter-electrode distance (IED) used when recording the EMG signals. In order to test these hypotheses, the values of the MPF of two elbow extensor muscles, triceps brachii (TB, 65% fast twitch fibers) and anconeus (AN, 65% slow twitch fibers), were compared at different levels of contraction. Subjects (n = 13) produced ten static ramp elbow extensions [0-100% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC)]. EMG signals of each muscle were recorded with two pairs of surface miniature electrodes having IEDs of 6 mm and 30 mm respectively. MPFs were obtained at each of the following levels: 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% MVC. Statistical analyses indicated that the MPF of AN increased significantly (P less than 0.05) up to 60% MVC. In contrast, the MPF values for TB showed no significant change across different levels of contraction (P greater than 0.05). Since skinfold was on average 3.2 times thicker over TB than over AN it is suggested that the low-pass filtering effect of the skin could have prevented the observation of an increase of the MPF for TB. It thus appears that changes of the MPF with the level of force, as disclosed by surface electrode recordings, is specific to each muscle. Consequently one has to account for factors such as thickness of the skinfold when it comes to the determination of the fiber-type content of different muscles within a subject.  相似文献

One possibility for reducing simulation time, with models of musculo-skeletal system, is to simulate the muscle using a rigid tendon rather than the more realistic compliant tendon. This study examines the effect of tendon elasticity on muscle force output under different dynamic conditions. A single muscle, point mass model was used and simulations were performed varying the mass, the tendon length, the initial position, and the task. For simulations for relatively slow motion, as experienced for example in upper limb reaching motions or rising from a chair, tendon properties had little influence on muscle force, in contrast simulations of an explosive task similar to jumping or throwing tendon had a much larger effect.  相似文献

Two series of experiments were performed to examine the relationship between force and change in average muscle fibre conduction velocity (MFCV) during local muscle fatigue. The average MFCV was estimated using the cross-correlation method. In the first experiment this relationship was studied with surface EMG of vastus lateralis at force levels from 10 to 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with and without occluded circulation. The product of relative force and time was held constant. At 10-20% MVC, MFCV increased slightly under the 2 conditions. Between 30-40% MVC, MFCV decreased, this decline in conduction velocity being significantly greater with occluded circulation. Above 40% MVC the decline in MFCV was larger at higher forces, but without any differences between the ischaemic and non-ischaemic conditions. In the second experiment the relationship between change in force and MFCV was studied during sustained maximal voluntary contractions of biceps brachii. MFCV declined during the first 26-39 s of the contraction, followed by an increase. Since this increase occurred when the force had dropped to 30-50% of the initial maximal force, a partial restoration of blood flow is thought to be responsible for this phenomenon. Because an increase in MFCV was noted, despite a further decline in force, this implies that at high force levels the change in MFCV during fatigue could partly be caused by mechanisms different from those accounting for the force loss. It is concluded that above 40% MVC intramuscular pressure is sufficiently high to cause ischaemia, and MFCV is found to be very sensitive to changes in intramuscular blood flow.  相似文献

How do synergistic muscles interact, when their contraction aims at stabilizing and fine-tuning a movement, which is induced by the antagonistic muscle? The aim of the study was to analyze the interaction of biceps and brachioradialis during fine-tuning control tasks in comparison to load bearing ones. The surface electromyogram of biceps, brachioradialis and triceps were examined in 15 healthy subjects in dynamic flexion and extension movements with different combinations of contraction levels, joint angles and angular velocities. The measurements were conducted in two configurations, where the torque due to an external load opposes the rotational direction of the elbow flexion (load bearing tasks) or the elbow extension (fine-tuning tasks).Whereas during load bearing control tasks, similar muscular activation of biceps and brachioradialis was observed for all joint angles, angular velocities and external loads, during fine-tuning control tasks a significant difference of the muscular activation of both flexors was observed for 1 kg, F(3.639, 47.305) = 2.864, p = 0.037, and 5 kg of external load, F(1.570, 21.976) = 6.834, p = 0.008.The results confirm the synergistic muscular activation of both flexors during load bearing tasks, but suggest different control strategies for both flexors when they comprise a fine-tuning control task.  相似文献

Robotics allows up to 40× visual magnification and 10× magnification of the surgeon's movements, and eliminates physiologic tremors. These properties should allow the development of mini-invasive limb surgery, especially of the brachial plexus. The purpose of this work was to test the feasibility of the restoration of elbow flexion according to the technique of Oberlin using a da Vinci robot. The authors' series included four patients (average age, 31 years) presenting with elbow flexion paralysis. They were operated on 8 months after injury using a da Vinci S robot. In three patients, the open technique (technique 1) was used, and the mini-invasive approach (technique 2) was used for the last one. Strength of elbow flexion was measured. After 1-year follow-up, all of the patients had recovered elbow flexion. No sensory or motor deficit was found in the ulnar nerve territory. There was no difficulty with technique 1; technique 2, however, required a conversion to technique 1 because of difficulty visualizing the operative field. The results of the authors' series show the feasibility of the robot-assisted technique for the Oberlin procedure. The lack of sensory feedback was not an issue. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of active static stretching on the maximal isometric muscle strength (maximal voluntary contraction [MVC]) and rate of force development (RFD) determined within time intervals of 30, 50, 100, and 200 milliseconds relative to the onset of muscle contraction. Fifteen men (aged 21.3 ± 2.4 years) were submitted on different days to the following tests: (a) familiarization session to the isokinetic dynamometer; (b) 2 maximal isometric contractions for knee extensors in the isokinetic dynamometer to determine MVC and RFD (control); and (c) 2 active static stretching exercises for the dominant leg extensors (10 × 30 seconds for each exercise with a 20-second rest interval between bouts). After stretching, the isokinetic test was repeated (poststretching). Conditions 2 and 3 were performed in random order. The RFD was considered as the mean slope of the moment-time curve at time intervals of 0-30, 0-50, 0-100; 0-150; and 0200 milliseconds relative to the onset of muscle contraction. The MVC was reduced after stretching (285 ± 59 vs. 271 ± 56 N · m, p < 0.01). The RFD at intervals of 0-30, 0-50, and 0-100 milliseconds was unchanged after stretching (p > 0.05). However, the RFD measured at intervals of 0-150 and 0-200 milliseconds was significantly lower after stretching (p < 0.01). It can be concluded that explosive muscular actions of a very short duration (<100 milliseconds) seem less affected by active static stretching when compared with actions using maximal muscle strength.  相似文献

Myosin produces force in a cyclic interaction, which involves alternate tight binding to actin and to ATP. We have investigated the energetics associated with force production by measuring the force generated by skinned muscle fibers as the strength of the actomyosin bond is changed. We varied the strength of the actomyosin bond by addition of a polymer that promotes protein-protein association or by changing temperature or ionic strength. We estimated the free energy available to generate force by measuring isometric tension, as the free energy of the states that precede the working stroke are lowered with increasing phosphate. We found that the free energy available to generate force and the force per attached cross-bridge at low [Pi] were both proportional to the free energy available from the formation of the actomyosin bond. We conclude that the formation of the actomyosin bond is involved in providing the free energy driving the production of isometric tension and mechanical work. Because the binding of myosin to actin is an endothermic, entropically driven reaction, work must be performed by a "thermal ratchet" in which a thermal fluctuation in Brownian motion is captured by formation of the actomyosin bond.  相似文献

The myosin heavy chain (MHC) IIB gene is selectively expressedin skeletal muscles, imparting fast contractile kinetics. Why the MHCIIB gene product is expressed in muscles like the tibialis anterior(TA) and not expressed in muscles like the soleus is currently unclear.It is shown here that the mutation of an E-box within the MHC IIBpromoter decreased reporter gene activity in the fast-twitch TA muscle90-fold as compared with the wild-type promoter. Reporter geneexpression within the TA required this E-box for activation of aheterologous construct containing upstream regulatory regions of theMHC IIB promoter linked to the basal 70-kDa heat shock protein TATApromoter. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays demonstrated thatmutation of the E-box prevented the binding of both MyoD and myogeninto this element. In cotransfected C2C12myotubes and Hep G2 cells, MyoD preferentially activated the MHC IIBpromoter in an E-box-dependent manner, whereas myogenin activated theMHC IIB promoter to a lesser extent, and in an E-box-independent manner. A time course analysis of hindlimb suspension demonstrated thatthe unweighted soleus muscle activated expression of MyoD mRNA beforethe de novo expression of MHC IIB mRNA. These data suggest a possiblecausative role for MyoD in the observed upregulation of MHC IIB in theunweighted soleus muscle.  相似文献
