Boulard Chantal and Weintraub J. 1973. Immunological responses of rabbits artificially infested with the cattle grubs Hypoderma bovis (L.) and H. lineatum (De Vill.) (Diptera : Oestridae). International Journal for Parasitology3: 379–386. Immunological responses against first-instar larvae of Hypoderma bovis (L.) and H. lineatum (De Vill.) were traced in artificially infested rabbits in which larvae grew normally in the first instar but did not survive to the second instar. Passive haemagglutination demonstrated a rapid rise in antibody titres during the first 2 months to maximum levels that persisted until about 200 days of the infestation. Immunoelectrophoretic analyses of the sera demonstrated that larval metabolic products were more important than breakdown products of dead larvae in stimulating the production of antibodies. Larval collagenase, which seemed to induce the most significant immune response, was inhibited by homologous antibodies in the serum of a hyperimmunized rabbit. The implications of these results for infestations in the normal bovine host were discussed, with emphasis on the need to identify antigenic fractions other than collagenase, which by itself had not produced total control of larvae in previous vaccination tests.  相似文献

Subcutaneous larvae of Hypoderma spp. (Diptera: Oestridae) were detected in the dorsal region in 10 roe deer, Capreolus capreolus (Artiodactyla: Cervidae), hunted in central Spain between January and March 2016. All larvae were found in the inner side of the hide during the skinning of the animals. The study of the morphological features of eight larvae of different stages collected from two animals allowed the identification of Hypoderma actaeon Brauer. The small size (4–5 mm) of some of the first instars suggests that the internal lifecycle of H. actaeon may be exclusively subcutaneous. This is the first confirmation of H. actaeon in roe deer; however, further studies to assess the spread of the parasite and to follow the evolution of this myiasis in roe deer are needed.  相似文献

During the 2003–2005 hunting seasons, a total of 120 Cervidae, including 39 red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) and 81 fallow deer (Dama dama), were examined for subcutaneous myiasis. Animals were shot from January to June in southern Spain. Specific antibodies against Hypodermatinae (Diptera: Oestridae) were detected by indirect enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) using a crude larval extract (CLE) and a purified antigen [hypodermin C (HC)] obtained from first instars of Hypoderma lineatum (De Villers) (Diptera: Oestridae). Hypoderma actaeon Brauer was the only species detected in this study, which represents the first confirmation of this species in fallow deer from Spain. The overall prevalence of animals presenting subcutaneous larvae (14.2%) was considerably lower than the prevalences determined by iELISA with CLE (43.3%) and HC (40.0%). Red deer showed a higher prevalence of Hypoderma than fallow deer. The concordance between larval examination during the hunting season and iELISA using both antigens was low, whereas the concordance between the CLE and HC ELISAs was good. Larval antigens obtained from H. lineatum constitute a good tool for the diagnosis of H. actaeon in Cervidae, especially when the hunting season does not coincide with the maximum presence of larvae on the back.  相似文献

The antennae of Hypoderma bovis (Diptera: Oestridae) females were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Each antenna is composed of 3 parts: the scape, the pedicel, and the funiculus, with a large, protruding arista. Mechanoreceptors are found on the proximal and lateral margins of the scape and pedicel, respectively. Microtrichia, which are presumably non-innervated, are located evenly over both the outer surface of the scape and the inner surface of the pedicel. A narrow band of microtrichia is present proximally on the outer surface of the pedicel. The entire funicular surface is densely covered with microtrichia. Small patches lacking these microtrichia appear as depressions or “pits” (8–20 μm in diameter) on the surface of the funiculus. Olfactory sensilla found on the funicular surface include basiconica type 1, basiconica type 2, and trichoid sensilla. The sensilla basiconica commonly occur in pits on the anterodorsal surface of the funiculus. Trichoid sensilla are abundant on the posteroventral surface of the funiculus and do not appear to occur in pits. In addition, clavate and peg sensilla, whose functions are unknown, are found in low numbers on the funicular surface. There may be as many as 300 olfactory pits on the anterodorsal surface of each funiculus. These are single-chambered and contain 6 or fewer sensilla basiconica. We propose that a relatively high number of pits may be characteristic of flies in Superfamily Oestroidea (as compared with those of Superfamily Muscoidea), but that pit morphology within the Calyptratae is not Superfamily-specific.  相似文献

Several natural enemies regulate populations of root maggots (Delia spp.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) in canola (Brassica napus L.) in western Canada, among them the rove beetles Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal and Aleochara verna Say (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) and the hymenopteran Trybliographa rapae Westwood (Hymenoptera: Figitidae). Intercrops of canola and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) can be part of an integrated pest management strategy to reduce damage by Delia spp. to canola. We investigated several intercropping regimes of canola and wheat to determine effects on parasitism of Delia radicum (L.) and activity densities of adult A. bilineata and A. verna. Studies were conducted over four site-years in central Alberta, Canada in 2005 and 2006. Mean parasitism rates of D. radicum puparia by A. bilineata ranged from 7.27% to 81.69%. Increasing proportions of wheat in intercrops significantly reduced parasitism by A. bilineata in one site-year. Parasitism of D. radicum by T. rapae was not affected by intercropping; mean parasitism rates were between 2.17% and 14.55%. In one site-year combined parasitism by all parasitoids significantly increased with increasing canola as a proportion of total crop plant populations. Pitfall trap collections of adult A. bilineata increased with increasing proportions of canola in some site-years. Collections of A. verna adults were low relative to A. bilineata and were largely unaffected by intercropping. Although canola–wheat intercrops do not appear to favour parasitism of D. radicum, reductions in canola root damage by Delia larvae in intercrops, reported previously, suggest that canola–wheat intercrops may nevertheless be favourable as a crop protection strategy.  相似文献

The antennal sensilla of male and female Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata Walker (Diptera: Tachinidae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Five types of sensilla were identified on the funicle. The trichoid sensilla are most conspicuous, with a characteristic distal curvature and wall pores. Basiconic types I and II sensilla show a small peg with a pitted surface. Basiconic type III sensilla can be distinguished from the preceding ones by the swelling of the distal region of the peg. The function of these sensilla is likely to be olfactory. Coeloconic sensilla consist of a short grooved peg sunk in a socket. The number and distribution of the sensilla of each type are described. Female antennae bear more basiconic sensilla than those of males. These results are compared with previously published studies on other muscoid species.  相似文献

Summary Factors influencing the consumption of algae and the rate of feeding by the larvae of Heterotrissocladius changi Saether and Polypedilum nebeculosum (Meigen) (Chironomidae: Diptera) were determined from collections made between July 1975 and May 1977 in Yellowknife Bay, situated in the Canadian subarctic. Although both species fed heavily on algae during the summer, few cells were ingested in the winter, coincident with an overall reduction in feeding intensity. H. changi fed primarily on benthic species (Achnanthes minutissima, Achnanthes pinnata, Fragilaria pinnata, Fragilaria vaucheriae, Navicula spp., Scenedesmus spp.) Whereas P. nebeculosum was restricted to planktonic forms (Dinobryon spp., Scenedesmus spp.). The consumption of algae by H. changi depended largely on the density of the microflora in the environment. This factor had little influence on P. nebeculosum and was replaced by size selection, which prevented the ingestion of many planktonic algal species. The importance of algae to both chironomids also depended on the susceptability of certain algal forms to digestion. Temperature generally regulated the intensity of feeding of both H. changi and P. nebeculosum. However, changing day-length initiated heavy feeding during April and May, despite low water temperatures. The depth of water and the organic content of the substrate had no detectable effect on the amount of material in the guts.  相似文献

The antennal sensilla of Delia radicum L. (Diptera : Anthomyiidae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. On the scape and pedicel, grooved socketed bristles and setiferous plaques were found. There are 4 types of surface sensilla on the funicle: trichoid, basiconic, clavate, and grooved. Their numbers and distribution are described. There are 3–4 single-chambered pits on the dorsal surface of the funicle of both sexes and these contain basiconic sensilla. On the ventral surface, there is one multi-chambered pit, which contains 5 types of sensilla: grooved s., smooth-walled conical s., smooth-walled tapered s., striated s. and a novel type, flattened sensilla. These results are compared with previously published studies on several other fly species.  相似文献

A comparative study of the antennal sensilla of Delia radicum L., D. floralis F., D. antiqua Mg., D. platura Mg. (Diptera : Anthomyiidae) and Psila rosae F. Diptera Psilidae) is undertaken. For both sexes of each species, the type, distribution, and density of sensilla are determined. All 5 species have trichoid (olfactory) and grooved (olfactory) sensilla. Basiconica I (blunt) sensilla (olfactory) are found on each of the species examined, except D. platura. Basiconica II (tapered) (olfactory) and clavate (olfactory) sensilla are found only on Delia species. Also, only Delia species have single-chambered, dorsal pits, and these contain basiconic II pit sensilla (olfactory). Common to all 5 species is a multi-chambered ventral pit (olfactory). In the ventral pit, all 5 species have grooved pit sensilla (olfactory). In addition to this type of sensillum the Delia species have smooth-walled conical pit sensilla (hygro-/thermosensitive) and P. rosae has granular pit sensilla (hygro-/thermosensitive). Smooth-walled tapered pit sensilla (hygro-/thermosensitive) are found in D. radicum. Similarities and differences in the density of surface sensilla between dorsal and ventral funicular surfaces, male and female flies, and oligophagous (D. antiqua, D. radicum, D. floralis and P. rosae) and polyphagous (D. platura) species are compared. Several differences in sensillum density between the dorsal and ventral funicular surfaces are observed, but these do not fit into a consistent trend. Except for D. radicum, there are differences in sensillum density between male and female flies. For the oligophagous species, females have a greater sensillum density, whilst for the polyphagous D. platura males have a greater sensillum density. Comparisons between species show the greatest differences between the Delia species and P. rosae, and within the 4 Delia species, differences in sensillum density do not correlate with host range or body size.  相似文献

Antennae of both sexes of the feather-legged fly, Trichopoda pennipes F. (Diptera : Tachinidae) are described based on SEM observation. Socketed bristles and microtrichia were found on scape and pedicel, while a large number of different types of sensilla, interpersed with numerous microtrichia, were present on the entire surface of the 3rd antennal segment (funiculus). Seven types of sensilla, at least 3 of them olfactory, were observed and classified on the basis of external anatomical characteristics, such as shape, pore presence and density. A single deep pit, containing groups of sensilla, was present in both sexes on the lateral side of the funiculus.  相似文献

South Africa currently exports fresh citrus (Citrus spp.) fruit to Japan using an in-transit cold treatment protocol of 14 d or 12 d at temperatures <0 degrees C for treatment of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in 'Clementine' mandarins (Citrus reticulata Blanco) and other citrus types, respectively. To reduce the risk of chilling injury with this treatment, research was conducted with temperatures >0 degrees C. Earlier South African research had shown that young (6-d-old) larvae were slightly more tolerant of cold treatment and that there were no significant differences between cold tolerance of these larvae in different citrus types [oranges, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck; grapefruits, Citrus paradisi Macfad.; lemons, Citrus limon (L.) Burm.f.; and mandarins). Due to their ready availability, 'Valencia' oranges were used in this study. When 62,492 larvae in total were treated in three replicates at a mean temperature of 1.5 degrees C for 16 d, there were three larval survivors. The trial was therefore repeated with oranges using a 16-d period at a mean temperature of 1.0 degrees C and a mean of 1.4 degrees C for the hourly maximum probe readings. Three replicates were again conducted and the resultant mean mortality in the control was 8.1% of 21,801 larvae, whereas the cold treatment mortality was 100% of 71,756 larvae. This treatment at a mean temperature of 1 degree C exceeded the Japanese confidence level requirement and also exceeded the Probit-9 mortality level, but not at a confidence level of 95%. These data support the establishment of a treatment protocol of 16 d at temperatures <1.4 degrees C, commencing once all fruit pulp probes reach a temperature of 1 degree C or lower.  相似文献

Larvae of Rhinoestrus spp. (Diptera, Oestridae) infect nasal and sinus cavities of horses, causing a nasal myiasis characterized by severe respiratory distress. Presently, the diagnosis of horse nasal botfly relies on the observation of clinical signs, on the post mortem retrieval of larvae or on molecular assays performed using pharyngeal swabs. The present study was carried out to characterize larval somatic proteins and salivary glands of Rhinoestrus spp. in a preliminary assessment towards the immunodiagnosis of equine rhinoestrosis. Out of the 212 necropsied horses 13 were positive for the presence of Rhinoestrus spp. larvae. The analysis of the sera from the infected animals by Western blotting assay showed the presence of a specific host humoral immune response against Rhinoestrus spp. larvae and proved that the salivary glands are the major immunogens in horse nasal botflies.  相似文献

HUnter D. M. and Webster J. M. 1973. Determination of the migratory route of botfly larvae, Cuterebra grisea (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in deermice. International Journal for Parasitology3:311–316. Cuterebra grisea larvae introduced into deermice (Peromyscus manicutatus) occurred in the nasal passages (nose or eye entry) or were associated with the esophagus and trachea (mouth entry) in the first three days after entry. During this period, some deermice exhibited a violent wheezing reaction. From day 4 to 6 after entry, larvae migrated to the final development site in the inguinal region of the deermouse. Migrating larvae were found on the front and top of the head, on the back and at the base of the tail. The similarity of this migratory path for C. grisea with the final development sites of other Cuterebra species is discussed.  相似文献

Antennae and maxillary palps of both sexes of the Sheep Head fly Hydrotaea irritans (Diptera : Muscidae) were investigated using scanning electron microscopy to describe the types, morphology, and distribution of olfactory sensory structures. Only socketed bristles and microtrichia were found on the scape of the antennae. These structures were also observed on the pedicel together with a group of 7–8 as yet undescribed sensilla, whose function is unknown. Olfactory sensilla were not found on these 2 segments or on the arista. Large numbers of olfactory sensilla and microtrichia were present on the funiculus. The former included sensilla trichodea (thick-walled, multiporous sensilla), sensilla styloconica and 6 types of sensilla basiconica (thin-walled, multiporous sensilla), 4 of which occurred individually and 2 of which were found in groups. An olfactory pit containing groups of thin-walled multiporous sensilla was located on the dorsomedian side of the funiculus. All sensilla basiconica were classified on morphological characteristics. The maxillary palps were covered with microtrichia and socketed bristles, but only 1 type of olfactory sensillum was found. This was a type of sensillum basiconicum that differed from any of those found on the antennae. No differences were found in sensilla diversity and distribution between males and females.  相似文献

  • 1 Generalist predators are repelled by chrysomelid (Chrysomela spp., Phratora vitellinue L.) larval defensive secretions that are obtained from salicin in their host plants. But little is known about the effect of these secretions on specialist predators.
  • 2 In this study, we describe the feeding behaviour of a fly, Parasyrphus melanderi Curran (Diptera: Syrphidae), which feeds on Chrysomela aeneicollis Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Parasyrphus melanderi lays its eggs on C.aeneicollis egg clutches, and its larvae consume C.aeneicollis eggs and larvae.
  • 3 Chrysomela aeneicollis hatching rates were significantly lower (20%) on clutches with fly eggs than on clutches without them (40%). Half of the clutches with one fly egg had survival rates below 5%, and when two fly eggs were present (four clutches), the entire clutch was consumed.
  • 4 In nature, P.melanderi eggs were 3 times more abundant on a salicylaterich willow species S.orestera Schneider, than on the medium-salicylate S.geyeriana Anderss. (1.8 v 0.6 eggs per clutch). On 18% of the S.orestera clones, all the beetle clutches contained fly eggs. In laboratory-choice tests, P.melanderi larvae fed equally rapidly on C.aeneicollis larvae that were chemically defended (feeding on S.orestera) as on larvae that produced no secretion (feeding on the salicylate-poor S.lutea Nutt.). This predator does not appear to be deterred by C.aeneicollis's defensive secretion. We discuss the implications of specialist predators on determining host suitability to herbivorous insects.

A chironomid midge, Cricotopus lebetis Sublette (Diptera: Chironomidae), was discovered feeding on Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) in Crystal River, Citrus, Co., Florida, in the 1990s. Larvae of the midge mine the apical meristems of hydrilla, causing terminal branching and stunting of the plant. We investigated the fundamental host range of the midge by conducting a series of no-choice and paired-choice tests. No-choice developmental tests with neonate larvae revealed that the fundamental host range of C. lebetis included not only on hydrilla but also several other aquatic plants in different families, suggesting that this insect is not a hydrilla specialist. In paired-choice bioassays, larval colonisation of Elodea canadensis Michx. (Hydrocharitaceae) and Najas guadalupensis (Spreng.) Magnus (Najadaceae) was greater than colonisation of H. verticillata. Behavioural bioassays in a Y-tube olfactometer and in Petri dishes suggested that neonate larvae were not able to locate host plant material, whereas older larvae were successful in finding hosts. In paired-choice oviposition tests, adult females discriminated between potential oviposition sites, with greater numbers of eggs laid on E. canadensis and N. guadalupensis than on H. verticillata. This study is the first detailed account of host searching and oviposition behaviour of a phytophagous chironomid midge. The results will be used to assess the potential value of C. lebetis as a biological control agent of hydrilla.  相似文献

Abstract. The apex of the larval antenna of the crane fly Nephrotoma suturalis has 6 cuticular sensilla that stained intensely black with silver nitrate, which indicates their porosity. The large sensory cone is innervated by 14 neurons and the 3 small, smooth surfaced, conical pegs have 4 neurons each. The small and large cylindrical sensilla with their smooth walls and pleated apices are innervated by 4 and 6 nerve cells, respectively. The 15 sensilla on the apex of the maxillary palp are all stained by silver nitrate. These sensilla are of five types: 7 type A sensilla with a smooth surface, a distinct apical pore, and 3 or 4 neurons; 2 type B sensilla with a smooth surface, many pores, and 5 neurons; 1 type C sensillum with a grooved surface, a large apical pore, smaller pores in the grooves, and 6 neurons; 3 type D sensilla with a smooth surface, a grooved apex that is elongated into a projection, and 4 neurons; 2 type E sensilla with many pores covering the surface, leaf-like appearance, and 4 neurons. The number and types of sensilla are similar to those in other nematocerous larvae, but in the many different forms of sensilla and the structure of the sensory cone, these tipulid larvae differ greatly from other larvae of lower Diptera.  相似文献

Abstract. Cuticular sensilla on newly hatched larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis De Geer (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) and Oestrus ovis (L.) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Two types of trichoid sensilla, two types of coeloconic sensilla and a pit sensillum were present on the thoracic and abdominal segments of G. intestinalis larvae. Sensilla on larvae of O. ovis were similar although only one type of trichoid sensillum was present. Total number of sensilla were higher for O. ovis than for G. intestinalis (248 v . 214). Variation in numbers of sensilla is consistent with the concept that increasing numbers of sensilla are associated with increasingly complex searching behaviour required to locate suitable habitats for development.  相似文献

Biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) were collected by Mosquito Magnet® and black light traps at 5 sites on Jeju-do, Republic of Korea (Korea), from May-November 2013 to determine species diversity and seasonal distribution. A total of 4,267 specimens were collected, of which 99.9% were female. The most common species was Culicoides tainanus (91.8%), followed by C. lungchiensis (7.2%) and C. punctatus (0.6%), while the remaining 4 species accounted for <0.5% of all Culicoides spp. that were collected. High numbers of C. tainanus were collected in May, followed by decreasing numbers through August, and then increasing numbers through November when surveillance was terminated. Peak numbers of C. lungchiensis were collected during September, with low numbers collected from May-August and October-November. The presence of C. lungchiensis in Korea was confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Eine Analyse der Wachstumsvorgänge der Larven von Hypoderma bovis ergab, daß diese am Ende des Wanderstadiums ca. 42% ihrer endgültigen Länge aber höchstens 10% ihres endgültigen Körpergewichts erreicht haben. Der Sauerstoffverbrauch der Beulenlarven nimmt, auf das Körpergewicht bezogen, im Laufe der Larvalentwicklung ab. Er beträgt bei einer 50 mg schweren Larve 800 mm3/mg·h, bei einem 1500 mg schweren Tier nur noch 100 mm3/mg·h. Mit dem Häutungsschritt von LII zu LIII ist eine vorübergehende sprunghafte Erhöhung des Sauerstoffverbrauchs verbunden. Das Verhältnis Sauerstoffverbrauch/Körpergewicht stimmt in den beiden untersuchten Larvenstadien nicht überein. Der Sauerstoffverbrauch der Tiere ist temperaturabhängig. Das Maximum liegt zwischen 32° und 37°C. Mit zunehmendem Alter verschiebt es sich gegen 32°C.
Growth and oxygenium-consum of the larvae of Hyderma bovis (De Geer) (Diptera, Hypodermatidae)
Summary At the end of their migration larvae of Hypoderma bovis have reached about 42% of their final length, but only 10% of their final body-weight. Oxygenium-consum/mg body-weight decreased during the larval development: a larva of 50 mg weight needs 800 mm3/mg·h, one of 1500 mg weight only 100 mm3/mg·h. Third instar larvae have a much higher oxygenium-consum after moulting than second instar larvae have just before. The relation of oxygenium-consum/body-weight differs in the two larval stages. Respiration depends on the temperature, its maximum is between 32°C and 37°C. Young animals have a higher maximum than old ones.
