The aim of this article is to present the optimization of a proof test procedure of ceramic hip joint ball heads. The proof test rejects defective samples in the production line before being implanted into human body. Thereby on every ceramic ball head a static load is applied, which is somewhat higher than the maximum physiological load. The magnitude of the applied load should not damage the samples which are free of flaws in the high stress area. The configuration of the proof test influences the stress distribution in the ball head, which should be similar to the physiological case. To determine the stress distribution, a non-linear finite element (FE) analysis was performed and the results were validated by measurements. With an iterative approach based on FE calculations the proof test configuration was optimized in such a way that the stress distribution in the ball head is similar to the stress distribution in vivo. In this study all ball heads showed very high fatigue resistance after being proof tested and fulfilled the requirements of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) described in the Guidance Document for the Preparation of Premarket Notifications for Ceramic Ball Hip System. The probability of a fracture of an implanted ceramic ball head can be decreased by the presented optimized proof test procedure. Latter can thus improve the reliability of ceramic hip joint ball heads. The study was supported by the KTI (Commission for Technology and Innovation, Switzerland).  相似文献

Because of the recognized link between core stability and back and lower extremity injury in sport, additional field tests that assess the strength and power component of core stability are needed to identify athletes at risk of such injury. To that end, we developed and tested the reliability of the front and side abdominal power tests (FAPT and SAPT), which were adapted from plyometric medicine ball exercises. The FAPT and SAPT were performed by explosively contracting the core musculature using the arms as a lever to project a medicine ball. Twenty-four untrained young women (aged 20.9 +/- 1.1 year) completed three trials each of the FAPT and SAPT on separate nonconsecutive days. The average distance the medicine ball was projected on each day was recorded; power was inferred from this measure. There was an approximately 3% increase in the mean distance between the testing sessions for the FAPT and SAPT; this was not significant and indicates there was no learning effect in the measurement protocol. Heteroscedasticity was present in the SAPT data but not the FAPT data. For the FAPT, the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.95, standard error of measurement was 24 cm, and random error using the limits of agreement method was 67.5 cm. For the SAPT, the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.93, mean coefficient of variation was 9.8%, and the limits of agreement ratio was 36.8%. The FAPT and SAPT displayed excellent test-retest reliability, as well as acceptable measurement error. These findings suggest the FAPT and SAPT are reliable tests and may be used to assess the power component of core stability in young women.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to establish validity and reliability evidence for the medicine ball throw test for kindergarten students, an underrepresented group in the literature. The subjects were 105 students, 5-7 years old, BMI 17.44 +/- 3.17 kg x m(-2), 43% female and 57% male. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to examine reliability, and Pearson correlation coefficients and a paired t-test were used to examine validity. To accomplish this, the kindergarten students completed the medicine ball throw test on two different days and the modified pull-up test, the "criterion" measure, on another day. For the medicine ball throw, each student sat on the floor before throwing the medicine ball forward like a chest pass three times. The medicine ball throw was highly reliable both within 1 day (ICCs = 0.93 and 0.94 for day 1 and day 2, respectively) and across 2 days (ICC = 0.88), with all reliability estimates over the acceptable level of 0.80. The medicine ball throw scores were positively related with height (r = 0.34) and weight (r = 0.34), and there was a significant difference between the 5-year-old group (mean +/- SD; 111.78 +/- 34.93) and the 6-year-old group (135.60 +/- 39.77), t = -3.23, p = 0.002, which supports correlational and known-difference evidence of validity for the medicine ball throw test. Even though no correlation was found between the medicine ball throw test and the modified pull-up test, r = -0.04, other forms of validity evidence (i.e., known-difference and correlational) were apparent. In conclusion, the medicine ball throw test seems to be a valid and reliable measure of upper-body strength for kindergarten children.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare abdominal muscle activity while performing a crunch on a stability ball with a traditional crunch. Forty-one healthy adults (23 men and 18 women) participated in the study. The subjects performed the crunch with the ball in 2 positions, 1 with the ball at the level of the inferior angles of the scapula (SB-high) and 1 with the ball at the level of the lower lumbar region of the back (SB-low). Surface electromyography was recorded from the upper and lower portions of the rectus abdominis and the external oblique during each repetition. Electromyography values were analyzed using repeated measures analyses of variance and pair-wise comparisons. Muscle activity for the upper and lower portions of the rectus abdominis and external oblique for a traditional crunch was significantly lower than for the crunch performed in the SB-low position but significantly greater than the SB-high position. Our data also showed that, on average, the abdominal muscle activity doubled when the stability ball was moved from the upper to the lower back position. These results support previous findings that a stability ball is not only effective for training the abdominal musculature, but, with the correct placement, it can also significantly increase muscle activity when compared with a traditional crunch. In addition, our results suggest that ball placement is critical for matching the appropriate overload to the condition level of the user.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare trunk muscle activity during stability ball and free weight exercises. Nine resistance-trained men participated in one testing session in which squats (SQ) and deadlifts (DL) were completed with loads of approximately 50, 70, 90, and 100% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). Isometric contractions during 3 stability ball exercises (quadruped (QP), pelvic thrust (PT), ball back extension (BE)) were also completed. During all exercises, average integrated electromyography (IEMG) from the rectus abdominus (RA), external oblique (EO), longissimus (L1) and multifidus (L5) was collected and analyzed. Results demonstrate that when expressed relative to 100% DL 1RM, muscle activity was 19.5 +/- 14.8% for L1 and 30.2 +/- 19.3% for L5 during QP, 31.4 +/- 13.4% for L1 and 37.6 +/- 12.4% for L5 during PT, and 44.2 +/- 22.8% for L1 and 45.5 +/- 21.6% for L5 during BE. IEMG of L1 during SQ and DL at 90 and 100% 1RM, and relative muscle activity of L5 during SQ and DL at 100% 1RM was significantly greater (P < or = 0.05) than in the stability ball exercises. Furthermore, relative muscle activity of L1 during DL at 50 and 70% 1RM was significantly greater than in QP and PT. No significant differences were observed in RA and EO during any of the exercises. In conclusion, activity of the trunk muscles during SQs and DLs is greater or equal to that which is produced during the stability ball exercises. It appears that stability ball exercises may not provide a sufficient stimulus for increasing muscular strength or hypertrophy; consequently, the role of stability ball exercises in strength and conditioning programs is questioned. SQs and DLs are recommended for increasing strength and hypertrophy of the back extensors.  相似文献

The method of statystical analysis of the distribution of the 2nd and 3d instar larvae of Hypoderma bovis in 54 herds (8120 heads) of cattle from Czechoslovakia and in 20 herds (1809 heads) from Mongolia has shown that in most cases the negative binomial distribution models the distribution of larvae with sufficient reliability and that the variability in parameters of the distribution is stable independent on the parts of the area.  相似文献

A technique has been developed that permits the packaging of mini-Mu-carrying cosmids into phage lambda heads. This procedure has several advantages over packaging into Mu helper capsids: the amounts of DNA to be packaged can be increased, the packaging efficiency is improved, and the stability of transducing lysates is high.  相似文献

Mode of DNA packing within bacteriophage heads   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Electron micrographs of five different DNA bacteriophages, as prepared by drying in thin films of negative stain, frequently show their heads to be disrupted and flattened. In such cases DNA strands, no larger than 2.5 nm in diameter, become visible, either contained within partially ruptured capsids or completely ejected from severely ruptured ones. Seen in either aspect, the strands appear with circular outline; in some cases a set of concentric circles (or a tightly wound spiral) is evident. Two alternative models of DNA packing within phage heads are proposed. Both are consistent with the electron microscopic observations and, as applied specifically to T4 phage heads, they are also consistent with available data from birefringence studies. One model proposes that the DNA, in simple double-helix form, is wound into a ball. The other suggests that the DNA is wound like a spool, with a greater number of turns in the central region than at the two ends and with the spool axis perpendicular to the axis of the phage particle. The available evidence does not permit a choice to be made between the two models.  相似文献

Femoral head bone allografts have traditionally been used to provide mechanical stability to areas of bony deficiency, or for its osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. Concerns have been raised over increased infection rates following the use of fresh-frozen graft tissue. This retrospective study aims to investigate the outcomes of fresh frozen femoral heads kept in a regulated, non-commercial bone bank at a university teaching hospital. The local bone bank database was used to identify released femoral heads during a 14 year study period (September 1999–December 2013) whereby a retrospective review of patient records was undertaken to determine clinical outcome. During the observed study period, 427 femoral heads were released from cold storage. Of these, 270 femoral heads had a mean follow-up of 347 days. 157 femoral heads were excluded due to insufficient follow-up data (n = 132) or discarded due to breaks in the cold chain prior to use (n = 25). Of the 270 included femoral heads, 231 (85.6 %) had no reported complications with good graft incorporation. In the remaining 39 with reported complications, only 5 (2.6 %) developed a postoperative infection. Our findings suggest that the use of fresh frozen allograft does not materially increase the risk of post-operative bacterial infection. Our reported post-operative infection rates are comparable with infection rates of other similar studies on fresh frozen allograft use.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a short-term Swiss ball training on core stability and running economy. Eighteen young male athletes (15.5 +/- 1.4 years; 62.5 +/- 4.7 kg; sigma9 skinfolds 78.9 +/- 28.2 mm; VO2max 55.3 +/- 5.7 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)) were divided into a control (n = 10) and experimental (n = 8) groups. Athletes were assessed before and after the training program for stature, body mass, core stability, electromyographic activity of the abdominal and back muscles, treadmill VO2max, running economy, and running posture. The experimental group performed 2 Swiss ball training sessions per week for 6 weeks. Data analysis revealed a significant effect of Swiss ball training on core stability in the experimental group (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed for myoelectric activity of the abdominal and back muscles, treadmill VO2max, running economy, or running posture in either group. It appears Swiss ball training may positively affect core stability without concomitant improvements in physical performance in young athletes. Specificity of exercise selection should be considered.  相似文献

The soccer-specific field tests are popular among coaches due to their simplicity, validity, and minimal use of equipment. Nevertheless, there is a general lack of data about their reliability, particularly regarding the tests of anaerobic performance. Twenty professional male soccer players performed 3 consecutive trials of the tests of throwing-in and standing-kick performance (the distance measured) as well as on timed 10-m sprint, flying 20-m sprint, running 10 x 5 m, zigzag running with and without the ball, and the skill index (i.e., the ratio of the zigzag running without and with the ball). With the exception of the throwing-in and standing kick, the evaluated tests revealed high intraclass correlation coefficients (i.e., >0.80), small within-individual variations (coefficient of variation, <4%), and sample sizes for detecting a 2% change in the tested performance that are either close to or below the standard size of a professional soccer squad. In addition to simplicity and face validity, most of the evaluated tests revealed high reliability. Therefore, the evaluated tests are recommended for sport-specific profiling and early selection of young athletes as well as for routine testing procedures that could detect effects of various intervention procedures. Regarding the throwing-in and standing-kick tests, direct measurement of the ball velocity (e.g., with a standard radar gun) is recommended.  相似文献

This paper compares and discusses the wearout reliability and analysis of Gold (Au), Palladium (Pd) coated Cu and Pd-doped Cu wires used in fineline Ball Grid Array (BGA) package. Intermetallic compound (IMC) thickness measurement has been carried out to estimate the coefficient of diffusion (Do) under various aging conditions of different bonding wires. Wire pull and ball bond shear strengths have been analyzed and we found smaller variation in Pd-doped Cu wire compared to Au and Pd-doped Cu wire. Au bonds were identified to have faster IMC formation, compared to slower IMC growth of Cu. The obtained weibull slope, β of three bonding wires are greater than 1.0 and belong to wearout reliability data point. Pd-doped Cu wire exhibits larger time-to-failure and cycles-to-failure in both wearout reliability tests in Highly Accelerated Temperature and Humidity (HAST) and Temperature Cycling (TC) tests. This proves Pd-doped Cu wire has a greater potential and higher reliability margin compared to Au and Pd-coated Cu wires.  相似文献

Practitioners training the older adult may benefit from a low-cost, easy-to-administer field test of upper body power. This study evaluated validity and reliability of the seated medicine ball throw (SMBT) in older adults. Subjects (n = 33; age 72.4 ± 5.2 years) completed 6 trials of an SMBT in each of 2 testing days and 2 ball masses (1.5 and 3.0 kg). Subjects also completed 6 trials of an explosive push-up (EPU) on a force plate over 2 testing days. Validity was assessed via a Pearson Product-Moment correlation (PPM) between SMBT and EPU maximal vertical force. Reliability of the SMBT was determined using PPMs (r), Intraclass correlation (ICC, R) and Bland-Altman plots (BAPs). For validity, the association between the SMBT and the EPU revealed a PPM of r = 0.641 and r = 0.614 for the 1.5- and 3.0-kg medicine balls, respectively. Test-retest reliability of the 1.5- and 3.0-kg SMBT was r = 0.967 and r = 0.958, respectively. The ICC values of the 1.5- and 3.0-kg SMBT were R = 0.994 and 0.989, respectively. The BAPs revealed 94% of the differences between day 1 and 2 scores were within the 95% confidence interval of the mean difference. Test-retest reliability for the EPU was r = 0.944, R = 0.969. The BAPs showed 94% of the differences between day 1 and 2 scores were within the 95% confidence interval of the mean difference, for both medicine ball throws. In conclusion, for the older adult, the SMBT appears to be highly reliable test of upper body power. Its validity relative to the maximal force exerted during the EPU is modest. The SMBT is an inexpensive, safe, and repeatable measure of upper body power for the older adult.  相似文献

Myosin II, like many molecular motors, is a two-headed dimer held together by a coiled-coil rod. The stability of the (S2) rod has implications for head-head interactions, force generation, and possibly regulation. Whether S2 uncoils has been controversial. To test the stability of S2, we constructed a series of "zippered" dimeric smooth muscle myosin II compounds, containing a high-melting temperature 32-amino acid GCN4 leucine zipper in the S2 rod beginning 0, 1, 2, or 15 heptads from the head-rod junction. We then assessed the ability of these and wild-type myosin to bind strongly via two heads to an actin filament by measuring the fluorescence quenching of pyrene-labeled actin induced by myosin binding. Such two-headed binding is expected to exert a large strain that tends to uncoil S2, and hence provide a robust test of S2 stability. We find that wild-type and zippered heavy meromyosin (HMM) are able to bind by both heads to actin under both nucleotide-free and saturating ADP conditions. In addition, we compared the actin affinity and rates for the 0- and 15-zippered HMMs in the phosphorylated "on" state and found them to be very similar. These results strongly suggest that S2 uncoiling is not necessary for two-headed binding of myosin to actin, presumably due to a compliant point in the myosin head(s). We conclude that S2 likely remains intact during the catalytic cycle.  相似文献

A combination of experimental structural data, homology modelling and elastic network normal mode analysis is used to explore how coupled motions between the two myosin heads and the dimerization domain (S2) in smooth muscle myosin II determine the domain movements required to achieve the inhibited state of this ATP-dependent molecular motor. These physical models rationalize the empirical requirement for at least two heptads of non-coiled alpha-helix at the junction between the myosin heads and S2, and the dependence of regulation on S2 length. The results correlate well with biochemical data regarding altered conformational-dependent solubility and stability. Structural models of the conformational transition between putative active states and the inhibited state show that torsional flexibility of the S2 alpha-helices is a key mechanical requirement for myosin II regulation. These torsional motions of the myosin heads about their coiled coil alpha-helices affect the S2 domain structure, which reciprocally affects the motions of the myosin heads. This inter-relationship may explain a large body of data on function of molecular motors that form dimers through a coiled-coil domain.  相似文献

Abstract— Purification of choline acetyltransferase (ChAc) from heads of Drosophila melanogaster , the richest known source of ChAc, has been accomplished. The stability of the enzyme was preserved by working with a concentration of protein above 0.1 mg/ml. The purification was carried out with ammonium sulfate fractionation and column chromatography on QAE-Sephadex, CoA-Sepharose, G-200 Sephadex, and PCMB-Sepharose. In a procedure using 100 g of Drosophila heads, the specific activity of the crude homogenate was 0.028 μmol/min/mg protein and that of the final product was 43 μmol/min/mg protein, representing a 1500 fold purification. A single protein band, containing all of the ChAc activity, was seen by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A sharp pH optimum at 7.2 was observed. Apparent Km's for acetyl CoA and choline were 90 μM and 47 μM , respectively. The molecular weight was determined to be 69,000. Isoelectric focusing of extracts of Drosophila heads showed only one peak of choline acetyltransferase activity with an apparent pi of 5.1.  相似文献

The polarographic method of the determination of esterase and lipase activities using esters of β-naphthol has been elaborated. The activity of esterase of pig liver, house-fly heads, lyophilized horse serum, and human serum; and lipase activity of pig liver and pancreas was determined. Advantages of the polarographic method lie in using the same calibration curve of nitrosated β-naphthol for determinations of activities of several enzyme sources and in the stability of nitrosated β-naphthol in comparison to the colored reaction product of β-naphthol and tetraazotized o-dianisidin needed for spectrophotometry.  相似文献

The swiss is widely used in the recreational training environment as a supplement to conventional resistance training. One such application is to use the swiss ball as a bench support for bench press exercise. There is no evidence to indicate that the use of a swiss ball is beneficial for resistance training exercise. This study investigated muscle activity using surface electromyography of upper-body and abdominal muscles during the concentric and eccentric phases of the bench press on and off a swiss ball. Volunteers for this study were 14 resistance-trained subjects who performed isolated concentric and eccentric bench press repetitions using the 2 test surfaces with a 2-second cadence at a load equivalent to 60% maximum force output. The average root mean square of the muscle activity was calculated for each movement, and perceived exertion during the tasks was collected using a Borg Scale. The results of the study showed that deltoid and abdominal muscle activity was increased for repetitions performed using the swiss ball. Increased deltoid muscle activity supports previous findings for increased activity when greater instability is introduced to the bench press movement. Abdominal muscle activity increases were not hypothesized, but this finding provides scientific evidence for anecdotal reasoning behind swiss ball use as a potential core stability training device.  相似文献
