We housed offspring from northern (70° N) and southern (60° N) coastal cod (Gadus morhua) together in a ‘common garden’ rearing experiment at a temperature and light regime representative of the southern population. Through a more active feeding behaviour and a higher success, the northern cod achieved a larger food share and a higher growth rate and condition than their southern conspecifics. This is contrary to what was demonstrated by field data of fish from their natural habitats. The northern cod also allocated more energy to the liver throughout the experiment. Our results agree with the theory of countergradient variation, suggesting that genetic influences on growth and condition have been opposed by environmental constraints in their natural habitat. The observation that the offspring from these populations differ in behavior and growth when housed together support the idea that the growth response to selection would be through a behavioral response. The field data suggest that density‐dependent population process and high juvenile density relative to prey limit the growth and condition in the wild and not necessarily the length of the growth season per se as assumed in the literature. The topographic distance (over 2000 km) limit mixing of early life stages of cod from the northern and southern population, and the different environmental stimuli (seasonality, temperature, food‐web interactions and habitat heterogeneity) in north and south are likely to evolve genetic differences.  相似文献

Controlled environment experiments were carried out to investigate thermal influences and population differences on growth of wild-caught juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. from two regions of differing thermal regime off Scotland; the Clyde Sea on the west coast and St Andrews Bay on the east coast. Cod from the Clyde demonstrated significantly higher growth rates than cod from St Andrews. In both populations the growth rate was greater at 12°C than at 8°C. These population and temperature effects act to reinforce one another and it could therefore be predicted that the growth differences between the two areas in the wild should be even more pronounced. The results are consistent with the suggestion that cod may be locally adapted to their thermal environment.  相似文献

A common-garden experiment was conducted on larvae to test for genetic differences in body shape among populations of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ). Offspring from four north-west Atlantic regions were reared from hatching to postmetamorphosis at two temperatures (7 ± 1 °C and 11 ± 1 °C) and two food levels (1500 and 4500 prey L−1). Body shape differed between populations and treatments. Population differences were greatest between south-west Scotian Shelf cod and those further north; the former were characterized by a deeper body, larger head, and longer caudal peduncle than cod from the other populations. Significant differences were also observed between two putative populations on the south-west Scotian Shelf, suggesting genetic divergence between spawning aggregations at small spatial scales (< 100 km). Temperature and food supply also influenced body shape, with the effect of the former being more pronounced. Individuals reared at the higher temperature or food level had a deeper body and a larger head than those reared at the lower temperature or food supply. Phenotypic responses to changes in the rearing environment also differed among populations, indicating genetic differences in phenotypic plasticity. Differences between populations in morphology and in phenotypic plasticity suggest genetic divergence at both large (> 1000 km) and small (< 100 km) spatial scales. The genetic differences at large spatial scales counteracted the expected effects of temperature differences in the wild, suggesting countergradient variation in morphology among these populations.  © 2006 Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada. We conducted a two-year study to assess how plankton composition and water quality impacts the distribution, densities, condition, growth, biochemical composition and reproductive success of juvenile and adult Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) in Long Island's south shore estuaries (LISSE). Juvenile and adult hard clams were placed in suspended cages at 10 locations ranging from the ocean inlets to locations furthest from inlets in Shinnecock Bay (SB), the eastern-most barrier island estuary of LISSE, and Great South Bay (GSB), the western-most barrier island estuary of LISSE. Phytoplankton community composition, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and clam growth and condition were monitored bi-weekly. A benthic survey of M. mercenaria densities in both estuaries was also conducted. In both 2004 and 2005, juveniles in central bay locations had significantly faster growth rates, lower mortality rates, and higher lipid content relative to sites closest to the inlets. Adult hard clams closest to the Fire Island inlet also had significantly lower condition indexes compared to mid-bay stations and densities of wild M. mercenaria populations in both estuaries were lower near inlets compared to locations further from inlets. In addition to substantial spatial differences within each estuary, differences were also observed between the embayments as juvenile clams in SB grew approximately twice as fast as those in GSB and adults in SB had significantly greater condition indexes than clams in GSB. Instantaneous juvenile growth rates were highly correlated to temperatures below 24 °C (p < 0.0001) and were also significantly correlated with several indicators of suspended food quantity and food quality (centric diatoms, phytoplankton cells > 5 μm, and dinoflagellates (inverse correlation)) which co-varied independently of temperature. In sum, these results suggest tidal exchange in LISSE promotes a water quality regime (cold water, with low food concentration) which would reduce the growth of juvenile clams and the overall reproductive success of adult hard clams located near newly-formed ocean inlets. However, increased exchange for regions furthest from inlets could enhance juvenile clam growth rates by reducing summer peak temperatures (> 24 °C) and densities of poor food sources (dinoflagellates).  相似文献

Effects of different combinations of stressors (viz. temperature, food level) on growth, developmental and survival rates of Rana temporaria tadpoles from two geographically widely (∼ 1500 km) separated populations were studied in a common garden experiment. In both populations, low temperature and low food level lead to towered growth rates and delayed metamorphosis, whereas high temperature and high food level had the opposite effect. Tadpoles from north metamorphosed earlier and exhibited higher growth rates than tadpoles from south, suggesting local adaptation to shorter growth period and cooler ambient temperature in north. Size at metamorphosis did not differ between the two populations, but when the differences in metamorphic age were accounted for, then the tadpoles from north were larger than those from south. These results suggest considerable adaptive genetic differentiation in growth rates, size and timing of metamorphosis between northern and southern R. temporaria populations. In both populations, high food levels tended to reduce tadpole survival rates and there was a negative correlation between growth and survival rates across different treatments in both populations. In general, tadpoles from north experienced high mortality rates in high food level - low temperature treatments, whereas southern tadpoles experienced high mortality in high food level-high temperature treatments. This suggest that there may be genetic differences among different populations as how they would be influenced by high nutrient loads, such as brought along for example by fertilization of forest or agricultural soils.  相似文献

Polymorphisms at five microsatellite DNA loci provide evidence that Atlantic cod Gadus morhua inhabiting Gilbert Bay, Labrador are genetically distinguishable from offshore cod on the north-east Newfoundland shelf and from inshore cod in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Antifreeze activity in the blood suggests that Gilbert Bay cod overwinter within the Bay. Gilbert Bay cod are also smaller (weight and length) for their age and consequently less fecund for their age, than cod elsewhere within the northern cod complex. The productivity and recruitment potential of coastal cod off Labrador may thus be much lower than that of offshore northern cod or of inshore cod farther south, implying that a more conservative management strategy may be required for cod from coastal Labrador than traditionally practised for northern cod inhabiting less harsh environments. Relatively high F ST and R ST measures of population structure suggest that important barriers to gene flow exist among five components that include two inshore (Gilbert and Trinity Bay) and three offshore cod aggregations on the north-east Newfoundland Shelf and the Grand Bank. D A and D SW estimates of genetic distance that involve Gilbert Bay cod are approximately three- and 10–fold larger, respectively, than estimates not involving Gilbert Bay cod. The differences between inshore cod from Gilbert Bay and Trinity Bay raise the possibility that other genetically distinguishable coastal populations may exist, or may have existed prior to the northern cod fishery collapse. Harvesting strategies for northern cod should recognize the existence of genetic diversity between inshore and offshore components as well as among coastal components.  相似文献

Most studies on feeding-related activities of fish in cold water (0° C) have not used eurythermal species or examined a broad suite of activities. In this study we report on the feeding, growth, behaviour and conversion-efficiency of 0 + Atlantic cod in response to water temperature and food availability. In one experiment, activity, opercular beat and growth decreased with decreasing temperature over the range 8·3–0·6° C. However, the conversion efficiency increased with decreasing temperature, a result partly explained by the relative change in activity and opercular rate. In another experiment, temperature had a linear effect on growth in cod fed different food rations. Both food availability and temperature were found to influence growth in group 0 + cod. The specific growth rate of cod in this experiment exceeded 2% day-1. Growth data collected from cod sampled in the field during the cold-water period showed a progressive increase of mean length over the season. Overall, these results demonstrate that 0 + cod have adapted to life in cold-water environments, in contrast to adult cod which mostly inhabit warmer environments.  相似文献

1. In populations of small mammals, food supplementation typically results in higher population densities, body weights, growth rates and reproductive rates. However, few studies have demonstrated a relationship between forage levels and demographic rates in wild populations in the absence of supplementation. 2. We examined the association of levels of available forage with individual growth rates and time to sexual maturity in eight re-introduced and three naturally occurring populations of water voles (Arvicola terrestris). 3. Range sizes were smaller at sites with higher population densities. Mean forage availability and individual growth rates covaried with range size at each site. 4. The weight at which water voles became sexually mature was 112 g for females and 115 g for males and did not vary between study sites. Differences in growth rates therefore translated into differences in the time taken to reach maturity between sites. 5. In the re-introduced populations, mean days to maturity varied inversely with mean range length. Females took 7 days (18%, range 40-47 days) longer and males 5 days (13%, range 40-45 days) longer to reach breeding condition at the sites with the shortest mean range lengths. 6. Evidence from this study suggests a possible mechanism by which increased population densities may reduce maturation rates in water voles through a reduction in mean range size, thereby limiting the availability of forage to each individual.  相似文献

Large juveniles and adult cod Gadus morhua develop enlarged fatty livers when fed high-energy lipid-rich diets in captivity; however, little is known of the partitioning of growth energy of small juveniles. This study compared simple indices of condition of laboratory-cultured and wild juvenile cod of similar size that consumed high-energy, lipid-rich food to determine whether small juveniles develop enlarged fatty livers in captivity. Cultured cod developed enlarged fatty livers. The hepatosomatic index ( I H) and condition factor of cultured cod were significantly higher and tissue water contents were significantly lower than in wild cod. Cultured cod also exhibited significantly higher muscle mass at length. Cod of similar age exhibited a high range in body size, high coeficient of variation in size and the I H was correlated positively with body size indicating that a size-selective social hierarchy had developed in the laboratory. In contrast, the I H of wild cod was correlated negatively with body size, supplying evidence of high utilization of dietary lipids by larger juveniles in association with increased metabolic expenditure when feeding on small prey items.  相似文献

The relative importance of genetic and environmental factors for explaining differences in trait distributions between populations is one of the major issues in evolutionary biology. In ectotherms, temperature can have a major impact on morphology, physiology, and life history strategies, and has often been inferred to explain differences between populations. In species with active thermoregulation, however, the ambient temperature may not be as important as the opportunity for thermoregulation. We studied growth in juvenile common lizards ( Lacerta vivipara ) originating from two environments differing in such thermal opportunity (i.e. day length). The populations differed significantly in their norms of reaction, with lizards experiencing long days in the wild showing a steeper increase in growth rate with increasing thermal opportunity. The environment with longer days also has a lower mean temperature in the wild, and in accordance with evolutionary predictions, lizards from this population had higher endurance at low temperatures. Both populations showed genetic variation in degree of phenotypic plasticity in growth rate as evident from the extensive crossing in norms of reaction.  相似文献

Initial growth in cephalopods is exponential, making early life-history critical in determining growth trajectories. Few captive studies have however examined the early life-history of cephalopods in fluctuating temperatures as would be encountered in the wild. This study investigates the relationship between early growth and the significant factors affecting growth, namely food intake, food conversion and fluctuating environmental temperatures. Pale octopus (Octopus pallidus) hatchlings were reared in captivity under either a warming or cooling temperature regime. Individual variations and periodicity in feeding rates (Fr), food conversion rates (Cr), growth rates (Gr), and the relationship between these variables and temperature were examined weekly. Food conversion rates were variable between individuals but also within individual octopus, which exhibited large fluctuations in Cr over time, exceeding 100% d− 1 in one instance. Although individual Fr, Cr and Gr displayed fluctuations over time, there was no evidence of periodicity for any of the variables. Changes in temperature were not significantly correlated to changes in Fr, Cr or Gr. Feeding rate did not appear to influence growth rate or food conversion rate. Food conversion rate was negatively correlated to feeding rate in the same week, and positively correlated to growth rate. Short periods of low or no food consumption were common and the high values obtained for food conversion rate for some individuals suggest that octopus can grow substantially with little or no food intake. Individual variability observed in octopus growth may be dependent on the growth mechanism involved, specifically a fine balance between the continuous hyperplasic and hypertrophic growth found in cephalopods.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation rates were determined for different sizes of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) at sub-zero temperatures (−1.4 and −0.5°C). These temperatures represent ambient conditions for Arctic cod in the Canadian high Arctic. Evacuation half-times, the time required for half of the content of the stomach to be evacuated, were longer (36–70 h; mean=51 h) than those reported in studies carried out on other fish species. Gastric evacuation rates at low temperatures were equal to, or below, those predicted by extrapolation from experiments conducted at higher temperatures. There were no significant differences in evacuation rates among fish size-groups or diets, but evacuation rates were slower for fish that had been starved prior to experiments. Estimated daily rations for Arctic cod in Resolute Bay, N.W.T., were 0.51% body weight for small fish (4.5 g) and 1.13% body weight for large fish (51 g). Slow stomach evacuation rates at low temperatures may limit daily food intake when food is seasonally abundant. This may contribute to slow growth rates and limited maximum size of Arctic cod in Canadian high Arctic waters. Received: 14 July 1997 / Accepted: 15 November 1997  相似文献

Variation in morphological traits is generally thought to be cogradient, with environmental effects on phenotypic expression reinforcing genetic differences between populations. We compared body shape between two populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Striking shape differences occurred between juveniles from the two populations when reared in a common laboratory environment. However, no difference in body shape occurred between wild-reared juveniles from the two populations, suggesting that the genetic differences between populations were obscured by opposing effects of the environmental differences experienced in the wild. We suggest that much of the genetic diversity in body shape of fishes may be cryptic, with stabilizing selection for the same optimal phenotype resulting in genetic divergence between populations subject to contrasting environmental influences.  相似文献

Muscle protein decreases only during prolonged starvation of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua, Gadidae), but in the absence of protein renewal, muscle metabolic capacities may decrease before marked loss of muscle protein. This study aimed at elucidating the threshold at which decreases in growth and condition reduce muscle metabolic capacities, as well as identifying the indicators that best explain changes in metabolic capacities. To generate a wide spectrum of individual growth rates, condition factors and proximate compositions, cod showing different initial condition were fed or starved for different periods of time. The relationships between muscle proteins and metabolic enzyme activities (LDH and CCO) on one hand, and growth rate, condition factor, hepato- and gonadosomatic index and muscle and liver water and energy contents, on the other hand, were examined through linear regression models. Multiple linear regressions explained a large proportion of the observed variability in proteins and enzyme activities. Changes in LDH and CCO activities were not driven by changes in growth rate. Muscle water was the only significant correlate for both enzymes. Enzyme activities decreased as soon as muscle water began to rise. Increases in water content from 79 to 92% resulted in a 10-fold decrease in LDH and CCO activities.  相似文献

Rates of food consumption are notoriously difficult to measure under field conditions and indirect methods must be used. Using data for cod collected from three different areas (North Sea, Faroes & Balsfjorden), food consumption was estimated from stomach fullness and rates of gastric evacuation. These estimates were then compared with estimates given by analysis of food-growth relationships. Although estimates were of the same order of magnitude there were differences. These differences were suggested to be largely due to insufficient knowledge relating to feeding rhythms of wild fish and lack of data regarding the'costs of reproduction'. Differences between the annual energy budgets of cod from the three stocks are discussed.  相似文献

We performed a common garden experiment to assess the existence of genetic differences on growth and body size between two populations of Poecilia vivipara inhabiting extremes of an environmental gradient caused by water salinity in lagoons of Northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil: the Campelo lagoon (freshwater) and Açu lagoon (brackish/saltwater). The two populations show extreme differences in average phenotypes for body size, shape and life history (freshwater populations with smaller body size, lower fecundity and larger reproductive allotment). Pregnant females were brought to the lab and the offspring from both groups were kept in a common recirculating system with freshwater. Standard length and survival were measured weekly over a period of 200 days and growth models were fitted and selected with information criteria. The offspring originally from the brackish water lagoon presented larger asymptotic length, higher maximum growth rate but lower survival than the offspring originally from the freshwater lagoon. Potential confounding variables such as density differences due to mortality and maternal effects (offspring size) were included as covariates in comparisons of growth rates between groups. The results are consistent with phenotypic differences among populations having some genetic basis, and with the existence of a trade-off between growth and maintenance due to the high growth/low survival observed in the group that changed from salt to freshwater. Comparisons of captive and natural populations suggest that the influence of environmental factors, such as salinity, food availability, fish density and predation should also be considered relevant to explain phenotypic variation in this system.  相似文献

The Baltic Sea ecosystem has undergone large changes during the last two decades, including a severe reduction in cod and herring biomass but, at the same time, a large increase in sprat abundance. The lower trophic levels of the Baltic Sea also changed due to environmental fluctuations, including variations in salinity and in volume of oxygenated water. In this apparently shifting environment, the conditions of herring and sprat have undergone large inter-annual variations during the past 15–20 years. In this study, we explore how abiotic factors (i.e. salinity and temperature) and biotic factors (biomass of the copepods Pseudocalanus elongatus , Temora longicornis , Acartia spp. and of cladocerans as well as clupeid abundance) in different seasons (May and August) affect clupeid body condition. Our analyses suggest that data of zooplankton biomass and abiotic factors in August have higher predictive power than May data. Although our analysis suggests that salinity (a bottom-up process) has an effect on sprat condition, total abundance of clupeids (a top-down process) is by far the most significant predictor of both herring and sprat condition. The strong correlation between clupeid abundance and total zooplankton biomass points to food competition and to top-down control by herring and sprat on common food resources. Furthermore, clupeid condition co-varied with the changes in the weight of zooplankton in the stomachs, which further suggest food competition being the main mechanism behind the changes in clupeid condition during the last two decades. Hence, our results are not in agreement with most of the current literature that has suggested that clupeid growth is regulated by environmentally mediated bottom-up processes acting on the abundance of copepods. This is, to our knowledge, the first evidence of food resources mediated density-dependent fish growth in a large marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Shallow, near-shore water habitats on the continental shelf of the Northeast Atlantic have been productive fishing areas in the past. Here, we review the present knowledge about (i) recent trends in the abundance of plaice and cod in these habitats and (ii) hypotheses regarding the factors responsible for any trends. At present, only a few studies exist on the trends of abundance of plaice or cod, namely from the Bay of Biscay, the North Sea and the Skagerrak/Kattegat. They suggest a declining abundance in coastal, shallow areas and – at least for plaice – a latitudinal gradient with an erosion of the southern distribution boundary in the Bay of Biscay and deepening of stocks in the North Sea. In contrast, no trend in shallow water abundance of plaice similar to a decline in deep-water stocks during the 1970s and their slow recovery during the 2000s is apparent in the Skagerrak/Kattegat. Although shallow habitats fundamentally differ from deeper areas by the prevalence of juvenile stages, the declining trends coincide with decreasing abundance/landings and spatial stock relocations in the deeper areas. Whether this indicates a common trend pointing at connectivity between shallow and deep water remains open. Fundamental differences exist in the suggested causes of the trends in different geographical areas. High fishing pressure together with low local recruitment apparently prevents the recovery of overexploited plaice and cod stocks in the Skagerrak/Kattegat. In contrast, the responses of juveniles and adult fish to increasing seawater temperature are the main hypotheses for changes in distribution and abundance of both fish species in the North Sea/Bay of Biscay. However, temperature alone cannot explain the observed decline of fish in coastal areas, and the causes may be more complex, involving nutrient loading, primary productivity or food availability, although at present, knowledge of these factors is insufficient.  相似文献
