Observations on some predators of stream-dwelling triclads   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A serological technique was used to demonstrate that one species of trichopteran and three species of plecopteran nymphs were feeding on stream-dwelling triclads. Observations on streams in Caernarvonshire, North Wales, suggested that, in general, these predators were not typical members of the fauna at springheads, where triclads were frequently abundant. In contrast, further downstream the presence of predators was considered to be one of a number of factors which contributed to lower population densities of triclads. However, two small stony streams were encountered where the plecopteran predator Dinocras cephalotes occurred in close proximity to stream-dwelling triclads from the springhead downwards. In one, both predators and prey were found at all stations but highest triclad numbers were recorded where predators were few. In the second stream the population density of the predator was higher, and here, triclads were very scarce on the undersides of stones and were almost entirely confined o t patches of moss. It appears that the predators may be both limiting the micro-distribution of the triclad and also perhaps feeding selectively on larger individuals since mature triclads were rare, except at the springhead.  相似文献

A laboratory stream is described which has simulated steep- and shallow-gradient bottoms whose gradients can be varied. It was found that Polycelis felina, the principal triclad of shallow-gradient streams had a much reduced ability to colonize the simulated steep-gradient bottoms when compared to Crenobia alpina, which is the principal triclad of the steep-gradient bottoms in the field. P. felina is unable to move in the steep-gradient bottoms to any great extent, while C. alpina showed considerable ability to do this. When a reduction in flow was made this did not increase the proportion of P. felina to be found in the steep-gradient regions. The triclads were also tested for possible acclimatory responses and it was found that their responses were more fundamentally based. On the basis of the above evidence it is suggested that the absence of P. felina from the steep-gradient regions of streams in North Wales is due to a behavioural inability to tolerate the current regimes present in the steep-gradient bottoms.  相似文献

Stone and rock substrates provide important habitat for many types of stream-dwelling invertebrates. Measures of the invertebrate communities inhabiting rock substrates are often an important component of ecological, monitoring and disturbance studies in streams. A major obstacle to researchers examining rock-inhabiting invertebrates is the time and effort expended on currently used methods of determining rock surface area to derive invertebrate densities on these substrates. In an attempt to more efficiently determine invertebrate densities from rock substrates in streams, we tested a direct method of calculating rock surface area from rock weight or displacement volume. This method allows very quick determinations of rock surface area in the field. Surface area estimates made using this technique were highly correlated to those from a widely used and more time-consuming method. Measurements made using this new method should theoretically give better surface area estimates than any other commonly used technique.  相似文献

Synopsis A population of central stonerollers, Campostoma anomalum, in Harker's Run, Butler County, Ohio U.S.A., was examined during autumn, 1980, to determine the species' movements, density, and home range size. During the study period, 170 fish were marked by fin clips and released into the specific pool or riffle where they were captured within the 187 m study section. Eighty percent of the recaptured, marked fish (20) were recaptured in their initial capture area (specific pool or riffle). No fish moved more than 135 m from its original capture area. Density estimates of C. anomalum for each pool and riffle within the study section ranged from 0.10–3.91 fish m−2 (mean = 1.25 fish m−2). Home range size was estimated to be 35.2 ± 14.1 m (mean ± 95% CI) of stream length. Campostoma anomalum in Harker's Run occurred at densities similar to those reported for the species in other streams, and their home ranges in this system were of similar size to those of other small, stream-dwelling fishes.  相似文献

This paper uses energy relations to compare asexual and sexualreproduction and fission and egg production in freshwater triclads.Egg production is more efficient at converting food to reproductiveenergy but fission is more efficient at converting this to offspringFission is therefore favored in ecological circumstances wherefood is always limiting and egg production in ecological circumstanceswhere food is not alway s limiting In principle sex is the leastefficient method of all the reproductive strategies yet parthenogenesis and self-fertilization are rare. We cannot be sure, however to what extent the metabolic losses incurred by spermproduction in hermaphrodites are made good by iesorption ofthe unused sperm denved from the mate. Furthermore, possibleshort-term and long-term balancing advantages of the sexualstrategy can be identified in triclads. We also consider how, in those triclads which take the fissionoption, the body biomass should be divided between the headand tail in order to maximize the fitness of the system. Ifmortality is independent of size, a midway fission plane shouldbe favored However strong size-dependent mortality occurs duringspates in the streams in which fissiparous triclads are found,"pushing" the optimum fission plane tailwards.  相似文献

The ecology of Phagocata vitta (Dugès) in a small mountain stream in North Wales was studied at monthly intervals over two years. The triclad occurred along the length of the stream but was abundant at only three of the 11 sampling sites. The ultimate factor influencing the abundance and distribution patterns was gradient and the proximate factor was the nature of the substratum; greatest numbers were found where the gradient was shallow and higher proportions of finer substrata and flora were present. The roles of other measured abiotic and biotic factors were not major. During the course of a year, low continual recruitment through sexual reproduction, and to a lesser extent through fissioning, took place, distinct cohorts could not be identified, the mean lengths of triclads stayed remarkably constant, and numbers fluctuated apparently erratically with no discernible seasonal pattern. Increases and decreases could not be attributed to changes in birth rates and death rates, respectively, and may have been due to irregular shifts in horizontal and vertical distribution. Factors controlling and regulating population size remain obscure.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation by damming can affect the persistence of single species population and also coexistence of two or more species through intensified competition. This study examined the effects of habitat fragmentation by damming on the coexistence of two stream-dwelling salmonids: the southern form of white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis japonicus) and the red-spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae). We examined charr, salmon, and dam distributions in 27 streams of the Fuji River basin, central Japan. In the 1970s, there were streams with five sympatric and 22 allopatric populations (n = 13 for charr, n = 9 for salmon). However, from the 1970s to 2004, 356 impassable dams were constructed in the surveyed streams, and four of the five sympatric streams became allopatric. In the extant sympatric stream, more than 20 dams fragmented habitat. Species distributions were separated by dams (with decreasing altitude) in the following order: extirpation area, charr-dominant area, and salmon-dominant area. Within the uppermost sympatric section (i.e., situated between the dams), salmon congregated in the largest uppermost pool just below the dam; despite these conditions, salmon frequency increased in the downstream direction at the stream scale. The results suggest that habitat fragmentation threatens the coexistence of stream-dwelling charr and salmon at both the basin and stream scales. We believe that exclusion of one species by another is likely in extremely fragmented habitats with minimal gradients and little variation in physical conditions (through reduced stream gradient and increased sand sedimentation caused by damming). In addition, multiple sites of damming ensure that there are no salmonid refuges from the collapse of metapopulation structure. In such fragmented habitats, even small tributaries serve important roles, as they are used mainly by salmonid fry and juveniles. We propose that habitats of native salmonids should be maximized by reconnecting fragmented habitats as part of a broader management plan.  相似文献

Pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus and rock bass Ambloplites rupestris stream populations of both sexes were significantly different in external morphology from lake populations in a central Ontario, Canada, watershed. The predictions that stream fishes would be more slender-bodied, and have a more anterior placement of lateral fins than lake fishes were generally supported. The prediction that stream fishes would have a more robust caudal peduncle was partially supported. The prediction that fin size would be larger in stream fishes was not supported, as lake rock bass generally had longer and wider fins than those from stream sites. The results suggest that in some species, smaller fins may be favoured in stream-dwelling individuals because the reduction of drag during swimming more than compensates for their reduced power and propulsion efficiency in a current. Smaller fin size in stream-dwelling centrarchids may be related to their body shape, or to their low usage of fast-moving water within the streams they inhabit.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Over 13 months, fifty Phagocata vitta were collected from a smalt tributary of the Afon Anafon (Wales) and the occurrence of the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis and an unnamed nematode studied.
2. During the study, prevalence ranged from 5% to 22% and mean intensity from two to twenty-nine ciliates per infected triclad, whilst relative density never exceeded three per triclad. There was a trend for these values to be highest in summer and lowest in winter, but a significant positive correlation with field temperature was only found for mean intensity. The mean values of mean intensity and relative density were not significantly correlated with triclad size.
3. For the nematode, prevalence varied from 2% to 6% and relative density from 0.02 to 0.08 individuals per triclad, whilst mean intensity remained about one per infected triclad. No significant correlations between seasonal fluctuations of any of these values and field temperature were obtained.
4. In laboratory experiments lasting 5 weeks, triclads which had been initially fed tubificid worms infected with T. pyriformis and kept in uninfected water had much higher prevalence and mean intensity values than triclads fed uninfected tubiticids and kept in infected water. The main source of infection by the ciliate in the field seems likely to be through the ingestion of infected food. In infected triclads cultured at either 5, 10, 15 or 20°C, prevalence, mean intensity and relative density values increased with rising temperatures, whilst mortality was negligible at the two lowest temperatures and substantial at the two highest. Laboratory findings are related to field events.
5. It is concluded that the ciliate and nematode parasites may not cause significant mortality in the fieid population of P. vitta .  相似文献

The invasion of Llyn Coron in North Wales by the American immigrant Dugesia tigrina resulted in the almost entire displacement of the native Polycelis tenuis and P. nigra populations. Because competition for food is the most important factor controlling and regulating populations of British lake-dwelling triclads, the diets of the invasive and native triclads in the lake were examined in an attempt to explain the successful invasion.A serological technique, the precipitin test, identified the gut contents of field-collected triclads. Niche breadth, electivity and niche overlap indices were used in analysis of the data. A broad food niche was recorded for all the triclad species. Oligochaetes predominated in the diet of D. tigrina followed by Asellus and chironomids, in almost equal proportions, snails and caddisflies, with mayflies scarcely eaten. Both Polycelis species fed heavily on oligochaetes followed by Asellus. P. tenuis ate slightly higher proportions of chironomids and caddisflies than snails and mayflies, whilst P. nigra consumed similar proportions of these four prey taxa. Gammarus, scarce in Llyn Coron, and cladocerans were not eaten by the Polycelis species and by only a few D. tigrina.To-date there has been no apparent shift in the diet of the Polycelis species as a consequence of the invasion by D. tigrina. In the absence of any evidence for the partitioning of food on the basis of prey size or condition, the considerable overlap in the diets of D. tigrina and the Polycelis species suggests the potential for severe inter-specific competition for food. The superior exploitation by D. tigrina of the available food resource requires explanation.  相似文献

Numerous low-head dams have been constructed for erosion control and installed in almost all mountainous streams in Japan. Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, is considered as one of the most intact areas in Japan, however, more than 331 low-head dams have been installed in 39 streams of the peninsula since the 1960s. In this study, the density of stream-dwelling Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) and the habitat characteristics in dam-installed sections were investigated in Shiretoko streams and compared with unaltered sections in which no dams have been installed as a reference. Fish density in dam-installed sections was significantly lower than reference sections. Canopy cover, maximum temperature, wetted width, frequencies of pebble, bedrock and boulder, and areas of rapid, glide and riffle was significantly differed between dam-installed and reference sections. High stream temperature, occurrence of glides, and loss of boulder in dam-installed sections may reduce the suitability of habitats for fish and minimize the population size. We suggest that negative effects of dam installations on Dolly Varden populations have occurred in Shiretoko streams.  相似文献

The general hypothesis that catchment urbanization explained the distribution of the threatened, stream-dwelling amphipod Austrogammarus australis (listed under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988) was tested using several surveys of 58 sites in streams draining the Dandenong Ranges on the eastern fringe of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. More specifically, four catchment-scale elements of urban land, hypothesized as sources of stress to receiving streams, were separated: catchment imperviousness, drainage connection (proportion of impervious areas connected to streams by stormwater pipes), density of unsealed roads and density of septic tanks. The degree to which each attribute independently and jointly explained the occurrence of A. australis was assessed using hierarchical partitioning of logistic regression analyses. Drainage connection independently best explained the occurrence of A. australis, pointing to stormwater drainage design as the priority area of catchment management for the conservation of the species. The separation of urban land use into attributes that characterize likely stressor sources provides a useful framework for assessing and prioritizing the most appropriate management actions to minimize urban-related stresses to aquatic biota.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Colloidal and dissolved organic carbon (CDOC) was monitored in six pristine boreal rivers in Northern Quebec, Canada, using ultrafiltration to obtain apparent molecular weight spectra.
2. The concentration and proportional contribution of small (<1K) molecular weight material (potentially microbially labile) and high (0.7μm to 300 K) molecular weight material was not significantly different between streams of order 2–9.
3. The dominant component of CDOC (0.7μm to 300 K fraction) was probably derived in streams other than first order, from surface or sub-surface run-off, whereas a peak concentration in the <1 K fraction during August was probably due to autochthonous exudates.
4. The two first order streams included in this survey had very low CDOC concentrations. However, further work on twelve other first order streams showed that they had high concentrations and we consider that this is the more typical situation. The finding offered a potential explanation for the otherwise anomalous longitudinal CDOC distribution pattern throughout the study area.  相似文献

Two lake-dwelling species of paludicolen triclads from Lake Biwa-ko (Honshû, Japan) were studied taxonomically and karyologically. (1) Phagocata kawakatsui Okugawa, 1956, is an epigean species usually inhabiting shallow springs and spring-fed streams in Central Japan. In Lake Biwa-ko, animals were obtained from several bottom stations of the littoral area in the southern part of the northern basin (3–70 m in depth). Chromosome numbers and karyotype: 2x=24 (2m+2sm+2sm+2m+2sm+2m+2sm+2m+2m+2sm+2m+2m). The first pair of metacentric chromosomes is very large in size. (2) Bdellocephala annandalei Ijima et Kaburaki, 1916, an endemic species, is distributed widely in the deep areas of the northern basin (30 to over 100 m in depth). Chromosome numbers and karyotype: 2x=28 (2m+2sm+2sm+2sm+2sm+2m+2m+2m+2m+2m+2m+2m+2m+2m) with the first pair of metacentric chromosomes very long.  相似文献

Discerning the adaptive significance of migratory strategies poses significant challenges, not the least of which is measuring migratory capability in natural populations. We take advantage of a visible migratory dimorphism to study variation in migratory capability in the stream-dwelling water strider, Aquarius remigis. Theory predicts loss of migratory capability in this species because streams have been viewed as stable and persistent habitats. As expected, A. remigis lack wings throughout most of North America. However, Californian populations are noted for unexpectedly high frequencies of winged, migratory morphs. To deduce the adaptive significance of this anomalous regional variation, we compare proportion winged among 37 Californian populations. We discover a strong, positive correlation with altitude, but no correlations with latitude, rainfall or stream size. A common garden experiment reveals that both proportion winged and its reaction norm to temperature differ genetically among populations, and a half-sibling experiment demonstrates that wing morph has high heritability, moderate genetic correlations across environments and a significant genotype by environment interaction. These results support the hypothesis that proportion winged and its reaction norm to temperature have diverged genetically in California. We conclude that high migratory capability is an evolutionary adaptation to the unusual harshness and instability of Californian stream habitats, and particularly to the high elevational gradients and extreme seasonal variation characteristic of montane streams.  相似文献

A guild of leeches and triclads coexist and are the most numerous invertebrate predators on the stony shores of productive British lakes. Populations of all species are food-limited. Mortality of recruited young is considerably higher in leech than in triclad populations, and this paper investigates reasons for this. In particular, the feeding success of young leeches and triclads in relation to prey species, prey size, prey condition (alive or crushed), spatial heterogeneity (with or without the presence of stones or gravel), and the presence or absence of other young or adults predators (leeches or triclads) of the same or different species are investigated in the laboratory. Feeding success by young leeches and triclads on crushed prey without the presence of stones was high, but declined dramatically in leeches but not triclads when stones were present. Young leeches and triclads were inept at capturing live prey, of a small or large size, with the exception of soft-bodied prey such as oligochaetes. Feeding success by young predators on live prey was not increased by the presence of other young predators of the same or different species. With only a few exceptions, the presence of adult leeches, and to a much lesser extent adult triclads, increased the feeding success, growth and survival of young leeches and triclads. It is concluded that the high mortality of young leeches, compared to triclads, in field populations is due to their inability to locate damaged food in an environment with spatial heterogeneity due to a poorly developed chemosensory system. High and low levels of juvenile morality are accompanied by high and low reproductive rates in leech and triclad populations, respectively. It is unusual for a food limited population to have a high level of recruitment, but it is speculated that the characteristically high reproductive output in parasitic leeches, from which predaceous leeches are derived or have affinities, has been retained to counterbalance high juvenile mortality rates.  相似文献

The effect of the introduction of fry of anadromous sea trout, Salmo trutta L., on the genetic integrity of landlocked brown trout populations was evaluated. Samples were taken from six brown trout populations from streams above impassable waterfalls in the Conwy river system (North Wales, U.K.) in 1989 and 1990. Three of these streams had no known stocking history and three had been stocked with sea trout fry from the lower Conwy system over the last few years. Representatives of these sea trout were collected from two streams in the lower Conwy system and from a hatchery. Allele frequencies at 13 loci, six of which were polymorphic, were determined by starch gel electrophoresis.
The stocked populations were intermediate in their allele frequencies between unstocked brown trout and sea trout samples. A principal component analysis suggested significant numbers of hybrids in all of the stocked streams. This shows that some of the introduced sea trout did not migrate down the falls to the sea, but stayed in fresh water and hybridized with the local population. The significance of this finding for the conservation of the genetic resource of brown trout stocks is discussed.  相似文献

Summary An apparatus is described which allows triclads to choose between the fast and slow regions of a stirred tank. In the absence of a stone substratum Crenobia alpina preferred or tolerated higher current speeds than Polycelis felina, this effect was enhanced when a stone substratum was added to the apparatus. These results indicate that the absence of Polycelis felina from the steep gradient regions of streams could be accounted for by its preference for slower micro-currents. Conversely the presence of Crenobia alpina in steep gradient regions could be accounted for by its preference for or tolerance to higher micro-currents.  相似文献

Summary The time-activity budget and energy expenditure of a riverine bird, the dipper Cinclus cinclus, was studied from March 1988 to July 1989, across a range of streams of contrasting acidity in upland Wales. Differences in time-activity budgets of birds on acidic and circumneutral streams were consistent with documented differences in prey availability and diet. Birds spent a significantly greater proportion of their active day foraging, swimming and flying, and less time resting, on acidic streams. Activity measurements varied significantly through the year, through the day, and with river flow. Despite differences in time budgets, mean Daily Energy Expenditure (DEE) on acidic streams was only 4.5–7.0% greater than on circumneutral streams. However, rates of energy gain were greater for dippers on circumneutral streams for every month of the year, a pattern confirmed by differences in body condition. By spending more time feeding, dippers on acidic streams will have less time for other activities such as self-maintenance and predator surveillance; they may also be less able to meet the additional demands accompanying the initiation of breeding. These findings are discussed in relation to the feeding ecology and breeding performance of dippers on streams of contrasting water quality in upland Wales.  相似文献
