The spatiotemporal population dynamics of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae) were evaluated in a city in Argentina in which visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. Over 14 sampling sessions, 5244 specimens of five species of Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) were captured, of which 2458 (46.87%) specimens were L. longipalpis. Generalized linear models were constructed to evaluate the associations between L. longipalpis abundance and explanatory variables derived from satellite images. The spatial variable ‘stratum’ and the temporal variable ‘season’ were also included in the models. Three variables were found to have significant associations: the normalized difference vegetation index; land surface temperature, and low urban coverage. The last two of these were associated with L. longipalpis abundance only during summer and winter, respectively. This variation between seasons supports the development of models that include temporal variables because models of distributions of the abundance of a species may show different critical variables according to the climatic period of the year. Abundance decreased gradually towards the downtown area, which suggests that L. longipalpis responds to a meta‐population structure, in which rural–periurban source populations that persist over time may colonize adjacent areas. This information allows for a spatiotemporal stratification of risk, which provides public health authorities with a valuable tool to help optimize prevention measures against visceral leishmaniasis. 相似文献

Abstract. Abundance of the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis , the vector of Leishmania chagasi , was surveyed using CDC light-suction traps in fifteen villages and 180 homesteads on Marajo island, Para State, Brazil. Flies were most abundant in cultivated areas, secondary growth and open woodland, away from savanna grassland and forest. Within homesteads, the abundance of flies in animal sheds was weakly associated with the number of hosts kept therein, and inversely related to the number elsewhere, both human and animal. Houses harboured more flies if dogs were present and if the house had: a roof of thatch rather than of tiles or tin; a thatched roof which had not been treated with insecticide; relatively more holes in walls and roof. The sex ratio of flies was more male-biased at higher densities. We weigh the importance of these variables as risk factors for Le.chagasi infection. 相似文献

Experiments were undertaken to determine the relative attractiveness of humans, dogs and chickens to Lutzomyia longipalpis, the principal vector of Leishmania chagasi causing American visceral leishmaniasis. Field experiments in two villages on Marajó Island, Pará State, Brazil, showed that one boy attracted significantly more flies than one dog or chicken, and slightly fewer flies than a group of six chickens. Experiments with laboratory-bred female flies showed that a significantly greater number of flies engorged on a single human than on either a single dog or chicken, and man-biting catches demonstrated the willingness of flies to bite in the field. It appears that Lu.longipalpis has catholic feeding habits, the attractiveness of different hosts being largely a function of their relative sizes. These results are discussed with reference to the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. 相似文献

To understand the geographic distribution of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the state
of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, both the climatic niches of Lutzomyia
longipalpis and VL cases were analysed. Distributional data were obtained
from 55 of the 79 counties of MS between 2003-2012. Ecological niche models (ENM) of
Lu. longipalpis and VL cases were produced using the maximum
entropy algorithm based on eight climatic variables. Lu. longipalpis
showed a wide distribution in MS. The highest climatic suitability for Lu.
longipalpis was observed in southern MS. Temperature seasonality and
annual mean precipitation were the variables that most influenced these models. Two
areas of high climatic suitability for the occurrence of VL cases were predicted: one
near Aquidauana and another encompassing several municipalities in the southeast
region of MS. As expected, a large overlap between the models for Lu.
longipalpis and VL cases was detected. Northern and northwestern areas of
MS were suitable for the occurrence of cases, but did not show high climatic
suitability for Lu. longipalpis . ENM of vectors and human cases
provided a greater understanding of the geographic distribution of VL in MS, which
can be applied to the development of future surveillance strategies. 相似文献

Abstract. In the Brazilian village of BoqueiraTo do Renato Parente, Ceará State, where visceral leishmaniasis is endemic, significant variation in the abundance of phlebotomine sandflies between different types of vegetation was demonstrated by castor oil sticky trap collections. Population densities of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) sandflies were higher in beans and maize crops than in the surrounding open and tree scrub. Significant relationships were detected between the abundances of sandflies and aphids, suggesting aphid honey dew as a potential food source. Sugar meal analysis, using high-performance anion exchange (HPAE) chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) and the cold anthrone test, was used to demonstrate that significantly more sandflies fed on bean plants contaminated with aphids and honeydew than on uncontaminated beans. Furthermore, higher concentrations of sugars were detected in flies which fed on aphid/honeydew-contaminated beans, suggesting that sugar was more easily available and/or that honeydew/aphids act as phagostimulants for sandflies. Amongst wild sandflies collected from a bean field, significantly more female sandflies were 'sugar-positive' than males, though the sugar concentrations in positive sandflies were similar for both sexes. The concentrations of di- and trisaccharides in sandfly homogenates, honeydew extracts and phloem exudates were very low. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the distribution of Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psycodidade) abundance in time and space in an area in northeastern Argentina with vector transmission of visceral and tegumentary leishmaniasis. For this, 51 households were selected using a ‘worst scenario’ criterion where one light trap was set during two consecutive nights in peridomiciles in the transitions between the four seasons, and the environment was surveyed simultaneously. The relationships of phlebotomine assemblage structure and the most abundant species with seasonality and environmental variables were evaluated using a canonical correspondence analysis and generalized linear mixed models, respectively. A total of 5110 individuals were captured. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) and Nyssomyia whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho, 1939) were the most abundant species captured in all samplings (98.3% of the total capture). The period of highest abundance of Lu. longipalpis was early autumn, and it was distributed in the most urbanized areas. Nyssomyia whitmani occupied mainly the less urbanized areas, showing peaks of abundance in early spring and summer. Other species were captured in low numbers and showed seasonal?spatial variations similar to those of Ny. whitmani . We confirmed Leishmania spp. vector persistence throughout the year in spatial patches of high abundance even during the less favorable season. 相似文献

Abstract Male Lutzomyia longipalpis of two types from Bolivia were compared using isozyme electrophoresis and wing morphometry. One sample ( ex Chiflonkaka Cave, alt. 2800 m at Toro Toro, Charcas Province, Potosi Department) was 'two-spot' phenotype males (i.e. tergites III and IV with paired pale patches of pheromone glands), whereas two other locality samples (Apa Apa and Imanaco, Sud Yungas Province, La Paz Department) were one-spot male phenotype (only tergite IV with paired pale patches). Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (using ACON, aGPD, GPI, IDH, MDH, ME, 6PGD, PGM, LAP and PEPB) found no difference between samples from adjacent hen houses at Apa Apa. Nei's standard genetic distance between one-spot samples from Apa Apa and Imanaco (5 km apart, 1500m alt.) was 0.001-0.002, whereas the two-spot males from Toro Toro (800 km away) showed a genetic distance of 0.081 from the one-spot males (Apa Apa and Imanaco). This genetic distance is commensurate with speciation, but may simply be intraspecific differentiation due to 'isolation by distance'.

The life cycle of vectors and the reservoirs that participate in the chain of infectious diseases have a strong relationship with the environmental dynamics of the ecosystems in which they live. Oscillations in population abundance and seasonality of insects can be explained by factors inherent in each region and time period. Therefore, knowledge of the relationship and influence of environmental factors on the population of Lutzomyia longipalpis is necessary because of the high incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil. This study evaluates the influence of abiotic variables on the population density and seasonal behavior of L. longipalpis in an urban endemic area of VL in Brazil. The sand fly captures were performed every two months between November, 2009 and November, 2010 in the peridomicile of 13 randomly selected residences. We captured 1,367 specimens of L. longipalpis, and the ratio of male/female flies was 2.86:1. The comparison of the total male specimens in the two seasons showed a statistical difference in the wet season, but there was no significant difference when considering the total females. With respect to climatic variables, a significant negative association was observed only with wind speed. During periods of high wind speeds, the population density of this vector decreased. The presence of L. longipalpis was found in all months of the study with bimodal behavior and population peaks during the wet season. 相似文献

This study aimed to analyse changes in the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia
longipalpis in Posadas, an urban area located in northeastern Argentina. Data
were obtained during the summer of 2007 and 2009 through two entomological surveys of
peridomiciles distributed around the city. The abundance distribution pattern for 2009 was
computed and compared with the previous pattern obtained in 2007, when the first human
visceral leishmaniasis cases were reported in the city. Vector abundance was also examined
in relation to micro and macrohabitat characteristics. In 2007 and 2009, Lu.
longipalpis was distributed among 41.5% and 31% of the households in the study
area, respectively. In both years, the abundance rates at most of the trapping sites were
below 30 Lu. longipalpis per trap per night; however, for areas
exhibiting 30-60 Lu. longipalpis and more than 60 Lu.
longipalpis, the areas increased in both size and number from 2007-2009.
Lu. longipalpis was more abundant in areas with a higher tree and bush
cover (a macrohabitat characteristic) and in peridomiciles with accumulated unused
material (a microhabitat characteristic). These results will help to prioritise and focus
control efforts by defining which peridomiciles display a potentially high abundance of

In 2004, the urban presence of Lutzomyia longipalpis was recorded
for the first time in Formosa province. In 2006, the first autochthonous case of
human urban visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recorded in Misiones in the presence of
the vector, along with some canine VL cases. After this first case, the vector began
to spread primarily in northeast Argentina. Between 2008-2011, three human VL cases
were reported in Salta province, but the presence of Lu. longipalpis
was not recorded. Captures of Phlebotominae were made in Tartagal, Salta, in 2013,
and the presence of Lu. longipalpis was first recorded in northwest
Argentina at that time. Systematic sampling is recommended to observe the
distribution and dispersion patterns of Lu. longipalpis and consider

The aim of the present study was to detect natural infection by Leishmania
(Leishmania) infantum in Lutzomyia longipalpis captured
in Barcarena, state of Pará, Brazil, through the use of three primer sets. With this
approach, it is unnecessary to previously dissect the sandfly specimens. DNA of
280 Lu. longipalpis female specimens were extracted from the
whole insects. PCR primers for kinetoplast minicircle DNA (kDNA), the mini-exon gene
and the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-rRNA) gene of Leishmania
were used, generating fragments of 400 bp, 780 bp and 603 bp, respectively.
Infection by the parasite was found with the kDNA primer in 8.6% of the cases, with
the mini-exon gene primer in 7.1% of the cases and with the SSU-rRNA gene primer in
5.3% of the cases. These data show the importance of polymerase chain reaction as a
tool for investigating the molecular epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis by
estimating the risk of disease transmission in endemic areas, with the kDNA primer
representing the most reliable marker for the parasite. 相似文献

Gregarines that parasitise phlebotomine sand flies belong to the genus Psychodiella and, even though they are highly host‐specific, only five species have been described to date. Their most outstanding features include the unique localisation of the oocysts in the accessory glands of the female host, which ensures contamination of the egg surface during oviposition, and the fact that they naturally parasitise the vectors of Leishmania, causal agent of leishmaniasis. The type species, Ps. chagasi, was first described in Lutzomyia longipalpis, vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), from Brazil. We recently reported Ps. chagasi sequences in Lu. longipalpis from Posadas (Misiones, Argentina), an endemic VL location where this gregarine had not been previously recorded. In order to analyse the incidence of Ps. chagasi infections in Lu. longipalpis from this location, the aim of this study was to develop a diagnostic assay for sand fly gregarine parasites in Lu. longipalpis. For this, we designed primers using the Ps. chagasi sequences we previously identified and performed an in vitro validation by PCR amplification of the original sand fly samples. Their specificity and sensitivity as diagnostic primers were subsequently confirmed by PCR reactions using total DNA extracted from naturally infected Lu. longipalpis from the same location (Posadas, Argentina). 相似文献

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil is transmitted by the phlebotomineLutzomyia longipalpis and in some midwestern regions byLutzomyia cruzi. Studies of the phlebotomine fauna, feedinghabits and natural infection rate by Leishmania contribute toincreased understanding of the epidemiological chain of leishmaniases and theirvectorial capacity. Collections were performed in Jaciara, state of Mato Grosso from2010-2013, during which time 2,011 phlebotomines (23 species) were captured (68.70%Lu. cruzi and 20.52% Lutzomyia whitmani).Lu. cruzi females were identified by observing the shapes of thecibarium (a portion of the mouthpart) and spermatheca, from which samples wereobtained for polymerase chain reaction to determine the rates of natural infection.Engorged phlebotomines were assessed to identify the blood-meal host by ELISA. Amoderate correlation was discovered between the number of Lu. cruziand the temperature and the minimum rate of infection was 6.10%. Twenty-two femaleswere reactive to the antisera of bird (28%), dog (3.30%) and skunk (1.60%). Weconclude that Lu. cruzi and Lu. whitmani haveadapted to the urban environment in this region and that Lu. cruziis the most likely vector of VL in Jaciara. Moreover, maintenance ofLeishmania in the environment is likely aided by the presence ofbirds and domestic and synanthropic animals. 相似文献

Phlebotomine captures were performed during 2004 in Clorinda, Argentina. Clorinda is located across the branches of the Paraguay river in front of Asunción city, Paraguay. Reports of canine and human visceral leishmaniasis in Asunción have been increasing since 1997, however neither leishmaniasis cases nor sand flies were ever recorded from Clorinda. Light traps were located in migration paths (bridges, port), and peridomestic environments of Clorinda and surrounding localities. Lutzomyia longipalpis was found in Clorinda and Puerto Pilcomayo, first report in a potential visceral leishmaniasis transmission area for Argentina. Active surveillance is required immediately in the localities involved and the surrounding area. 相似文献

The sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis, an important vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the New World, is believed to be a species complex. In an effort to better understand population dynamics and speciation in this vector we developed a panel of dinucleotide — (CA)n— microsatellite loci using an enrichment technique. Eleven polymorphic loci that produced consistent allelic banding patterns were characterized using a laboratory population of L. longipalpis. These dinucleotide microsatellite loci were more polymorphic than trinucleotide microsatellites characterized in wild‐caught samples of two other sandfly species; the variability of these loci was unexpected because the laboratory flies were believed to be inbred. 相似文献

Lutzomyia antunesi has been commonly reported in outbreaks of
cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Orinoquia region of Colombia. The bionomics
of this species were studied in the municipality of Villavicencio (Meta,
Colombia). Sandflies were captured over the course of one week per month for one
year in intradomiciliary, peridomiciliary and extradomiciliary housing areas.
The captures were performed from 06:00 pm-06:00 am using CDC light traps and the
females were processed for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect
Leishmania spp. A total of 22,097 specimens and 19 species
were captured of which Lu. antunesi (89%) and Lutzomyia
walkeri (5%) were the most abundant. Other species recognised as
anthropophilic (Lutzomyia panamensis, Lutzomyia
gomezi, Lutzomyia flaviscutellata and
Lutzomyia fairtigi) were present in very low abundance
(< 2%). Natural infection with Leishmania spp was detected using PCR in
Lu. antunesi, Lu. panamensis and
Lu. flavicutellata, showing infection rates of 1%, 4.8% and
7.5%, respectively. The present paper provides information on various ecological
aspects of Lu. antunesi. An analysis of seasonality shows that
this species increases in abundance in the hottest months (December, January and
February), directly correlating with the maximum temperature and inversely
correlating with precipitation. The natural infection rate is associated with

Abstract. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis of 159 specimens (144 females and 15 males) of Lutzomyia youngi collected in Shannon traps in a coffee plantation in the Andean region of western Venezuela, where leishmaniasis is endemic, revealed the presence of fructose, sucrose, glucose and maltose in the gut and crop of the wild sandflies. The identification of the sugars was confirmed by comparing retention times with those observed for standard sugars and those obtained from sandflies experimentally fed on known sugar solutions. Although the sandflies in nature may ingest each of the four sugars, the results suggest that it is more probable there is an invertase enzyme (glycosidase?) in the gut or crop of the sandfly which hydrolyses ingested disaccharides (e.g. sucrose) to the constituent monosaccharides (i.e. fructose and glucose). Ecological and altitudinal distributions of sandfly species may be related to the availability of specific sugar sources, with epidemiological implications. Identification of the preferred sugar could make breeding easier and would facilitate further research on Leishmania–wector relationships. 相似文献

Multiple species of Phlebotominae are vectors of Leishmania (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae), which causes visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). To describe the Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) related to the environments of black and gold howler monkeys Alouatta caraya (Humbodlt, 1812) (Primates: Atelidae), potential vectors were sampled in different landscapes and vertical strata of sleeping trees. Phlebotomine captured between December 2011 and March 2012 (2365 individuals) belonged to eight species, of which Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto, 1926) (61.4%) and Migonemyia migonei (França, 1920) (18.73%) were the most abundant, and Ny. withmani was recorded for the first time in the Chaco province. In the ‘peri‐domestic’ landscape, the phlebotomine were mainly captured in henhouses (78.7%), whereas the tree canopy in ‘rural’ and ‘wild’ landscapes yielded 31.2% and 29.1% of the phlebotomine, respectively. A significant association between the type of landscape and the species of phlebotomine was observed by multivariate analysis. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) and Mg. migonei were associated with ‘peri‐domestic’ landscape, and Ny. neivai was associated with the ‘wild’ landscape. The results of this prospective study suggest that the interaction between phlebotomine and A. caraya could be a key factor with respect to understanding the epidemiology of leishmaniasis. 相似文献
