The mechanical harvesting of fruit for oil production in an intensive olive tree orchard is generally accomplished by applying vibration to the tree’s trunk. This vibration is consequently transmitted to the branches, causing the fruit to detach. Although this practice is commonly used, the effects on tree behavior under forced vibration are not firmly established. Dynamic analysis was performed on 17 olive trees (Olea europaea L.) growing in an intensively-managed orchard using modal testing techniques. Modal parameter identification was focused inside the range excitation frequency used by the most commonly available trunk shakers on the market. The olive trees featuring a low morphological variability and modal parameters were obtained for a representative olive tree. The first two modes of vibration of the main tree frame were identified with damping ratios of 26.9 and 17.1% and natural frequencies of 20.2 and 37.7 Hz, respectively. A third mode of vibration of less importance was found at a higher frequency. Therefore, many local modes of vibration were detected near these natural frequencies, primarily located on secondary branches. During the testing, the olive trees behaved like a damped harmonic oscillator with predominantly mass damping in these modes.  相似文献

The stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) is exploited for wood production and its edible kernels. Cones take 3 years to mature, while other newer cones are growing on the tree. Currently, mechanical cone harvesting by tree vibration drives the profitability and development of this crop in forest ecosystems. However, the adaptation of vibration parameters is necessary to avoid damage to the tree and for the implementation of good harvesting practices. Direct measurements of acceleration transmissibility along fruit-bearing branches under controlled laboratory conditions showed that vibrations in the frequency range of 18.0 ± 5.3 Hz were capable of producing resonance phenomena in mature cones. Morphological changes produced in the mature cones, especially in the stalk and total weight, amplified the acceleration transmissibility, providing more favourable conditions for fruit detachment. Field tests with stone pines and a trunk shaker confirmed the potential of selective mechanical harvesting, which is conditional on the vibration parameters applied. The frequency range of the resonance of the mature cone proved to be suitable for vibration of the tree at its trunk. The quality and efficiency of the mechanical harvesting were determined to be inversely related parameters during harvesting by vibration. Trunk vibration at a frequency of 18 Hz and approximate acceleration of 65 m/s2 achieved a high harvest quality, with limited detachment of shoots and unripe cones, and a harvesting efficiency near 85%.  相似文献

The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on olive (Olea europaea) growth and development was followed for 4 years after transplanting in irrigated commercial orchards under arid conditions. Sites I and II were irrigated with saline water (EC?=?4.5 dS/m). In site I, the soil was infested with Verticillium dahliae and olive varieties ‘Picual’ (Verticillium susceptible) and ‘Barnea’ (relatively Verticillium tolerant) were tested. In site II, the soil was virgin soil (previously non-cultivated soil) and olive varieties ‘Souri’ and ‘Barnea’ were tested. Plants for all sites were inoculated in the nursery with Glomus intraradices alone or in a mixture with G. mosseae. Relative to non-inoculated trees, AMF colonization enhanced vegetative growth, expressed as tree height and trunk circumference, at all sites. At first commercial harvest, AMF-treated trees had higher fruit and oil yields than non-mycorrhitic controls. Under saline water irrigation, differences between inoculated and non-inoculated treatments were reduced in the slow-growing ‘Souri’ but remained apparent in the modern fast-growing ‘Barnea’. AMF colonization did not appear to improve tolerance of either ‘Picual’ or ‘Barnea’ to V. dahliae, and both were more susceptible than the non-inoculated controls. Thus inoculation of olive plants with AMF improves transplant growth and adaptation in arid areas during the first 3 years of growth and until the first commercial harvesting season.  相似文献

Landform has long been considered one of the primary controls on forest community structure; however, it is still unclear how the strength of such species–topography couplings varies in response to recurring disturbance events. We evaluated this question in the context of repeated prescribed fire applied to a forest landscape in eastern Kentucky, USA. The landscape encompassed different areas of varying treatment frequencies: no fire, less frequent fires (two times, 6-year interval), and frequent fires (four times, 1 or 2-year interval) over 8 years. For each of 32 plots (10 m × 40 m), species–landform data were collected seven times between 2002 and 2010. Results of canonical correspondence analysis showed generally decreasing importance of terrain attributes to the overall tree species composition, during and after the period of fire disturbance. Before fire, species composition showed high fractal dimensions and low Moran’s I, implying that the complex terrain of the area provided local, site-specific topographic controls on community structure. As fire was repeatedly applied, fractal dimensions decreased and Moran’s I increased, indicating that plots possessed increasingly similar vegetation characteristics regardless of site-specific terrain conditions; that is, local topography no longer acted as the primary driver of species composition because such a short-range spatial control became overwhelmed by a longer-range variation dictated by fire. Following a period of fire disturbance, forest modelers are recommended to avoid species distribution modeling heavily based on topographic parameters and to explicitly take into account potentially increasing spatial autocorrelation in species composition.  相似文献

The ability to accurately predict the load-bearing capacity of tree forks would improve tree surveying and tree surgery techniques and assist with the biomechanical modelling of a tree’s structure. In this study, the bending strength of forks of hazel (Corylus avellana L.) was investigated by assessing the mechanical contributions from three component parts of each fork. Intact forks and ones in which either central or peripheral xylem lying under the branch bark ridge at the apex of the forks had been removed were subjected to tensile tests. The bending strength of these forks was compared with that of the arising branches by carrying out a three-point bending test on the smaller arising branches of the intact specimens. All forks failed in tension, splitting between the arising branches. By removing the centrally placed xylem, constituting approximately a fifth of the width of the fracture surface, the forks’ bending strength was reduced by around 32 %, while removing the outer four-fifths reduced the forks’ bending strength by 49 %. Intact forks had around 74 % of the maximum bending strength of the smaller arising branch. It is concluded that the tensile strength of the centrally placed xylem at the apex of a tree fork is a critical strengthening component. This helps to explain the weakness of forks with included bark, which lack this component. This study concludes that tree forks should not by default be considered flaws in a tree’s structure.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of woody species’ encroachment on plant diversity changes with regard to vascular plants and bryophytes in traditional olive groves of the Maremma Regional Park (Tuscany, Italy) and assessed cross-taxon correlation between these two taxa. We classified the olive groves into four land use types, representing different successional stages. To describe the evenness of species distribution within a community, we plotted rank-abundance diagrams for each taxon and each land use type. The relationship between the number and cover of vascular plants, therophytes, bryophytes, colonists and phanerophytes in each plot was examined using linear regression. The effects of land use type on vascular plant and bryophyte richness and assemblages were assessed by permutational uni- and multivariate analysis of variance. The congruence in species composition between the two taxa was evaluated using Procrustes analysis. The number of vascular plants, bryophytes and therophytes decreased linearly with increased phanerophyte species cover. The number of species belonging to Thero-Brachypodietea progressively decreased throughout succession. Rank-abundance diagrams and multivariate analysis showed differences between the land use types, which were statistically significant for vascular plants between the traditional olive groves and the other land use types, and for bryophytes between the traditional olive groves and woodlands. PROTEST analysis and NMDS graphs showed a correlation between vascular plant and bryophyte communities. The results suggested that conservation measures are needed in the study area in order to ensure both the maintenance of traditional olive groves of conservation interest and high levels of environmental heterogeneity.  相似文献

The microbial ecology of the nitrogen cycle in agricultural soils is an issue of major interest. We hypothesized a major effect by farm management systems (mineral versus organic fertilizers) and a minor influence of soil texture and plant variety on the composition and abundance of microbial nitrifiers. We explored changes in composition (16S rRNA gene) of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and in abundance of AOA and AOB (qPCR of amoA genes) in the rhizosphere of 96 olive orchards differing in climatic conditions, agricultural practices, soil properties, and olive variety. Majority of archaea were 1.1b thaumarchaeota (soil crenarchaeotic group, SCG) closely related to the AOA genus Nitrososphaera. Most AOB (97%) were identical to Nitrosospira tenuis and most NOB (76%) were closely related to Nitrospira sp. Common factors shaping nitrifiers assemblage composition were pH, soil texture, and olive variety. AOB abundance was positively correlated with altitude, pH, and clay content, whereas AOA abundances showed significant relationships with organic nitrogen content and exchangeable K. The abundances of AOA differed significantly among soil textures and olive varieties, and those of AOB among soil management systems and olive varieties. Overall, we observed minor effects by orchard management system, soil cover crop practices, plantation age, or soil organic matter content, and major influence of soil texture, pH, and olive tree variety.  相似文献

A mathematical model was used to quantify and describe the variability in the mechanical impedance response of the Rhesus monkey subjected to vibrations in the range 3-20 Hz at 0.5 g peak acceleration. Due to the similarities in response, a two-mass, one-degree-of-freedom (DOF) model was selected and the associated mechanical parameters determined using a nonlinear least-squares optimization program. For the six tests conducted on each of the four subjects, appreciable parameter variations were observed within a subject; however, the majority of the mean parameter values among different subjects and among the repeated tests on the population were within +/- 1 S.D. of each other. Significant differences were observed in the stiffness coefficient and the total mass among different subjects, and in the mass ratio (between inert and sprung masses) among the repeated tests. Variations in the profile shapes following resonance were described and limited by changes in the mass ratio and the damping factor. Higher mass ratios (greater than 1.0) were associated with lower damping factors (less than 0.50). The impedance response beyond resonance approached the response described by the impedance of the inert mass and the damper elements of the model combined in parallel, and supported the assumption that the lower torso was rigidly attached to the seat. Physically, the reactive force produced by the upper torso increasingly diminished following resonance, due to the load transmission/attenuation characteristics of the spinal structures at 0.5 g peak acceleration. The impedance measured at the seat becomes dominated by the transmitted damping force associated with the spine and the force generated by the rigid lower-torso mass.  相似文献

The elastic response of a living cell is affected by its physiological state. This property provides mechanical fingerprints of a cell’s dysfunctionality. The softness (kilopascal range) and thickness (2–15 μm) of mammalian cells imply that the force exerted by the probe might be affected by the stiffness of the solid support. This observation makes infinite sample thickness models unsuitable to describe quantitatively the forces and deformations on a cell. Here, we report a general theory to determine the true Young’s moduli of a single cell from a force-indentation curve. Analytical expressions are deduced for common geometries such as flat punches, paraboloids, cones, needles, and nanowires. For a given cell and indentation, the influence of the solid support on the measurements is reduced by using sharp and high aspect ratio tips. The theory is validated by finite element simulations.  相似文献

We investigated the natural frequencies and damping ratios of 24 Norway spruce trees (Picea abies (L.) Karst) growing on subalpine forested slopes using swaying experiments. Trees were winched to the release position using a manually operated cable winch. Before release, the stem base rotation was approximately 2 degrees. All trees were tested in both fall-line and cross-slope direction if possible to reveal the difference between the two perpendicular directions. A new method based upon the Hilbert transformation for evaluating the damping ratio for trees was used. It enabled us to investigate the damping ratio for all excited modes of vibration in the tree structure during the swaying experiments and to study if velocity proportional damping (viscous damping) is a reasonable assumption when predicting the tree response to different external actions using mechanical models. No difference in first natural frequency and damping ratio was found between the fall-line and cross-slope direction for all tested trees. The first natural frequencies correlated best with the diameter at breast height and squared total tree height DBH/H 2. For the damping ratio, no significant correlation with different tree characteristics could be found. A non-velocity proportional damping ratio was observed for two trees. This indicates that using a viscous damping for all frequencies is an appropriate simplification when modelling the wind-tree interaction.  相似文献

This work has studied for the first time the structure and diversity of plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) infesting olive orchard soils in a wide-region in Spain that included 92 locations. It aims at determining which agronomical or environmental factors associated to the olive orchards are the main drivers of the PPNs community structure and diversity. Classical morphological and morphometric identification methods were used to determine the frequency and densities of PPNs. Thirteen families, 34 genera and 77 species of PPNs were identified. The highest diversity was found in Helicotylenchus genus, with six species previously reported in Spain and with H. oleae being a first report. Neodolichorhynchus microphasmis and Diptenchus sp., Diphtherophora sp., and Discotylenchus sp., usually considered fungal feeders, were also reported for the first time associated to olive rhizosphere. PPNs abundance ranged from 66 to 16,288 individuals/500-cm3 of soil with Helicotylenchus digonicus being the most prevalent species, followed by Filenchus sp., Merlinius brevidens and Xiphinema pachtaicum. Nematode abundance and diversity indexes were influenced by olive cultivar, and orchard and soil management practices; while olive variety and soil texture were the main factors driving PPN community composition. Soil physicochemical properties and climatic characteristics most strongly associated to the PPN community composition included pH, sand content and exchangeable K, and maximum and minimum average temperature of the sampled locations. Our data suggests that there is a high diversity of PPNs associated to olive in Southern Spain that can exert different damage to olive roots depending on the olive variety and their abundance. Further analysis to determine the resistance levels of most common olive varieties to the prevalent PPNs in Spain will help to choose the most appropriate ones for the establishment of new plantations. This choice will take into consideration the specific soils and environments where those olive varieties will be established.  相似文献

In the Monte desert of Argentina open woodlands of several species of Prosopis occur in areas with accessible underground water. The great latitudinal extent of the Monte (26–43°S) exhibits strong climatic gradients involving temperature, rainfall seasonality, and wind regime. Prosopis woodlands have been a source of subsistence for human communities for several centuries and continue to be exploited by the local inhabitants. The “mining” of this resource has led to severe desertification and consequent impoverishment of the local people. In order to suggest strategies for the better management and recuperation of these woodlands we studied the population structure and productivity of Prosopis flexuosa from multiple plots at Pipanaco (27°58′S), Telteca (32°20′S), and Ñacuñán (34°03′S). For each plot we measured the density of P. flexuosa trees, number of stems, basal diameter (DAB), height and canopy diameter of each tree. Tree ring data were used to determine the growth rates, annual wood production and biological rotation age for each area. The ecological structure of the woodlands differs between the three sites. Along this north–south transect, there is a decrease in adult tree density, mean basal diameter, mean tree height, canopy cover, productivity and total wood biomass. Consequently, the potential sustainable use of these woodlands varies. Only the northern, Pipanaco, woodlands have the potential for lumber production. In contrast, the short, multi-stem and low-productivity trees in the Telteca and Ñacuñán areas can only sustain a combination of local firewood production and activities such as extensive grazing by livestock. The present, uniform regulations for harvesting wood in these areas must be changed to acknowledge these differences in order to optimize wood production in, and conservation of, these woodlands.  相似文献

In the present study, the efficiency of the biocontrol agent Paenibacillus alvei (strain K165) to suppress Verticillium wilt of olive tree was evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments. In planta bioassays were conducted under greenhouse conditions and revealed that K165 significantly decreased symptoms on the susceptible cultivar ‘Amfissis’ by 44.5 and 51.6 % of the final disease severity index and relative area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), respectively. Thereafter, the suppressive effect of K165 against Verticillium dahliae was studied for two consecutive years (2007 and 2008) in a newly established olive orchard of the susceptible cv Amfissis and the resistant cv Kalamon, naturally infested with V. dahliae. The evaluation of K165 was carried out by recording symptoms, isolations and qPCR quantification of the pathogen in olive tissues. In both years, ‘Amfissis’ trees treated with K165 showed significantly lower final disease severity and relative AUDPC values compared to the non treated controls, whereas, in 2008 decreased symptom severity was associated with significantly lower V. dahliae DNA levels in plant tissues, indicating the suppressive effect of the biocontrol agent. However, no significant suppression was observed in ‘Kalamon’. Pathogen isolations along with qPCR quantification revealed a seasonal fluctuation of V. dahliae biomass in olive tissues with higher amounts occurring in May, and lower amounts in February, August and November. This is the first report of biological control of Verticillium wilt of olive tree under field conditions, associated with reduced pathogen levels inside the xylem tissues.  相似文献

The agronomic performance of fruit trees is significantly influenced by tree internal organization. Introducing architectural traits in breeding programs could thus lead to select new varieties with a regular bearing and lower input demand in order to reduce training and environmental costs. However, an interaction between tree ontogeny and genetic factors is expected. In this study, we investigated the genetic determinism of architectural traits in the olive tree, accounting for tree development over 5 years until first flowering occurrence. We studied an F1 progeny issued from a cross between two contrasted genotypes, ‘Olivière’ and ‘Arbequina’. Tree architecture was decomposed in quantitative traits, related to (1) growth and branching, (2) first flowering and fruiting. Models, including the year of growth, branching order and genotype effects, were built with variance function and covariance structure when necessary. After a model selection, broad sense heritabilities were calculated. During the first 3 years, both the mean values of vegetative traits and genetic factor significance depended on the shoot within-tree position. Dependencies between consecutive years were revealed for traits related to whole tree form. Whole tree form variables showed medium to high broad sense heritability values, whereas reproductive traits were highly heritable. This study demonstrates the existence of ontogenic trends in the olive tree, which result in traits heritable only at the tree periphery. A phenotyping strategy adapted to its architectural characteristics and a list of relevant traits, such as maximal internode length, is proposed. Transgressive effects suggest that genetic progress could be performed in future selection programs.  相似文献

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is a useful tool to modify animal feed preferences, allowing the implementation of selective grazing to control weeds in tree orchards without damaging the trees or affecting fruit production. LiCl is commonly used for inducing CTA. However, studies investigating the long-term persistence of CTA by LiCl in small ruminants are scarce. With this aim, we evaluated the efficiency of two LiCl doses (AV1 and AV2, 175 and 200 mg/kg BW, respectively) and a control (C, 0 mg/kg BW) for averting non-lactating dairy goats (n=15) to olive tree leaves. Aversion induction was reinforced on day 9 in those goats that consumed >10 g of olive leaves. Mid-term aversion effectiveness was assessed by five double-choice feeding tests (days 16, 24, 31, 38 and 53) of 30 min each, where 100 g of olive leaves were offered side-by-side with 390 g of Italian rye-grass (as-fed). Long-term aversion effectiveness was assessed in C, AV1 and AV2 goats by grazing for 30 min in paddocks with a simulated olive tree (days 59, 90, 121, 182 and 420). Moreover, C and AV2 goats were compared under on-field conditions (days 143, 211 and 363) in a commercial olive grove also for 30 min. The CTA proved to be established with a single LiCl dose in all goats and persisted for 4 and 55 days in AV1 and AV2 goats, respectively (P<0.001). However, 80% AV1 and 20% AV2 goats needed to be reinforced at day 9. When grazing under simulated olive tree and commercial olive grove conditions, the CTA goats, especially AV2 group, avoided the contact with the olive trees and minimally used a bipedal stance to feed leaves, than control goats. On average, time proportion spent consuming olive leaves and sprouts was much greater (P<0.05) for C (50.7±9.1%) than for AV1 (14.4±3.9%) and AV2 (3.1±0.9%). In conclusion, the 200 mg LiCl/kg BW dose was more effective than the 175 mg LiCl/kg BW dose for inducing an effective long-term CTA to olive tree leaves in goats.  相似文献

The importance of the olive tree phenology from agricultural and ecological point of view justifies the need to carry out phenological studies at local and regional scales. Furthermore, flowering phenology in the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is an important indicator of climatic change in the Mediterranean region. In this paper, we study the effects of altitude and the exposure of crown-flowering branches on the flowering phenology of the olive tree. The study was carried out from 2009 to 2012 at eight sites of Cornicabra olive cultivar in central Spain (Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha region), at altitudes between 440 and 875 m above sea level, since most olive groves in central Spain are to be found in this altitude range. Flowering phenology was also compared in two olive groves located at the same site and elevation; one in a flat area and the other on a north-facing hillside. Results revealed a significant correlation between altitude and flowering start-date: for each 100 m increase in altitude, flowering started 2.5 days later. Analysis of individual flowering branches of the same tree showed that preflowering and flowering started several days later on north-facing compared to south-facing branches. Olive trees growing on a north-facing hillside started the preflowering stage with some delay with respect to those growing in flat areas. Finally, taking onset of flowering as the variable, a hierarchical cluster analysis enabled olive-groves to be classified by flowering sequence across an altitudinal gradient.  相似文献

Invasive plants threaten native plant communities. Surface coal mines in the Appalachian Mountains are among the most disturbed landscapes in North America, but information about land cover characteristics of Appalachian mined lands is lacking. The invasive shrub autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) occurs on these sites and interferes with ecosystem recovery by outcompeting native trees, thus inhibiting re-establishment of the native woody-plant community. We analyzed Landsat 8 satellite imagery to describe autumn olive’s distribution on post-mined lands in southwestern Virginia within the Appalachian coalfield. Eight images from April 2013 through January 2015 served as input data. Calibration and validation data obtained from high-resolution aerial imagery were used to develop a land cover classification model that identified areas where autumn olive was a primary component of land cover. Results indicate that autumn olive cover was sufficiently dense to enable detection on approximately 12.6 % of post-mined lands within the study area. The classified map had user’s and producer’s accuracies of 85.3 and 78.6 %, respectively, for the autumn olive coverage class. Overall accuracy was assessed in reference to an independent validation dataset at 96.8 %. Autumn olive was detected more frequently on mines disturbed prior to 2003, the last year of known plantings, than on lands disturbed by more recent mining. These results indicate that autumn olive growing on reclaimed coal mines in Virginia and elsewhere in eastern USA can be mapped using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager imagery; and that autumn olive occurrence is a significant landscape vegetation feature on former surface coal mines in the southwestern Virginia segment of the Appalachian coalfield.  相似文献

Studies comparing fungal endophytes between above- and belowground woody crop organs and the factors that may structure their communities are lacking. Due to its great impact on the Mediterranean Basin, the olive tree was chosen for the isolation of endophytic fungi from roots, leaves and twigs in two seasons in north-eastern Portugal. Nine hundred seventy-six isolates belonging to 38 fungal species were obtained. Phomopsis columnaris, Fusarium oxysporum and Trichoderma gamsii were the most frequently isolated, collectively representing 69% of the isolates. Fungal diversity in the roots was higher than in the aboveground organs and higher in spring than autumn. Endophyte community similarity between the above- and belowground organs and between seasons was low. Species composition also varied spatially, with the fungal composition of the roots varying more among locations than that of the aboveground organs. Our results suggest olive tree endophyte community structure is affected by plant organ, location and season.  相似文献
