The ubiquitous volatile linalool is metabolized in plants to nonvolatile derivatives. We studied Nicotiana attenuata plants which naturally vary in (S)-(+)-linalool contents, and lines engineered to produce either (R)-(-)- or (S)-(+)-linalool. Only (S)-(+)-linalool production was associated with slower growth of a generalist herbivore, and a large fraction was present as nonvolatile derivatives. We found that variation in volatile linalool and its nonvolatile glycosides mapped to the same genetic locus which harbored the biosynthetic gene, NaLIS, but that free linalool varied more in environmental responses. This study reveals how (S)-(+)-linalool and conjugates differ in their regulation and possible functions in resistance.  相似文献

A recent study shows that the leukocyte adhesion molecules known as selectins form 'catch' bonds, the dissociation rate of which decreases with increasing applied force. The ability of selectins to switch between catch and slip bonds, where dissociation increases with force, can explain the shear threshold effect, in which leukocyte adhesion goes through a maximum with increasing shear rate.  相似文献

In this issue of Neuron, Shin et?al. (2012) show that the dual leucine zipper kinase (DLK) is responsible for the retrograde injury signal in spinal sensory and motor neurons. DLK is required for the accelerated regeneration seen after axotomy and for the improved regeneration seen after a conditioning injury. The term 'nucleosome remodeling' subsumes a large number of energy-dependent alterations of canonical nucleosome structure, catalyzed by dedicated ATPases in large multiprotein complexes. The importance of these factors for gene regulation and other processes with chromatin substrate have emerged from genetic studies. Mechanistic analyses of nucleosome remodeling by different enzymes provided a diverse, almost confusing phenomenology of ATP-dependent derangement of nucleosomes in vitro, suggesting that different remodeling machines follow different strategies to disrupt histone-DNA interactions. This review explores the alternative possibility that the rich phenomenology of nucleosome remodeling may be brought about by variations of one basic remodeling reaction.  相似文献
