Atmospheric CO2 (Ca) has risen dramatically since preglacial times and is projected to double in the next century. As part of a 4‐year study, we examined leaf gas exchange and photosynthetic acclimation in C3 and C4 plants using unique chambers that maintained a continuous Ca gradient from 200 to 550 µmol mol?1 in a natural grassland. Our goals were to characterize linear, nonlinear and threshold responses to increasing Ca from past to future Ca levels. Photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water‐use efficiency (A/gs) and leaf N content were measured in three common species: Bothriochloa ischaemum, a C4 perennial grass, Bromus japonicus, a C3 annual grass, and Solanum dimidiatum, a C3 perennial forb. Assimilation responses to internal CO2 concentrations (A/Ci curves) and photosynthetically active radiation (A/PAR curves) were also assessed, and acclimation parameters estimated from these data. Photosynthesis increased linearly with Ca in all species (P < 0.05). S. dimidiatum and B. ischaemum had greater carboxylation rates for Rubisco and PEP carboxylase, respectively, at subambient than superambient Ca (P < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first published evidence of A up‐regulation at subambient Ca in the field. No species showed down‐regulation at superambient Ca. Stomatal conductance generally showed curvilinear decreases with Ca in the perennial species (P < 0.05), with steeper declines over subambient Ca than superambient, suggesting that plant water relations have already changed significantly with past Ca increases. Resource‐use efficiency (A/gs and A/leaf N) in all species increased linearly with Ca. As both C3 and C4 plants had significant responses in A, gs, A/gs and A/leaf N to Ca enrichment, future Ca increases in this grassland may not favour C3 species as much as originally thought. Non‐linear responses and acclimation to low Ca should be incorporated into mechanistic models to better predict the effects of past and present rising Ca on grassland ecosystems. 相似文献

An investigation to determine whether stomatal acclimation to [CO2] occurred in C3/C4 grassland plants grown across a range of [CO2] (200–550 µmol mol?1) in the field was carried out. Acclimation was assessed by measuring the response of stomatal conductance (gs) to a range of intercellular CO2 (a gs–Ci curve) at each growth [CO2] in the third and fourth growing seasons of the treatment. The gs–Ci response curves for Solanum dimidiatum (C3 perennial forb) differed significantly across [CO2] treatments, suggesting that stomatal acclimation had occurred. Evidence of non–linear stomatal acclimation to [CO2] in this species was also found as maximum gs (gsmax; gs measured at the lowest Ci) increased with decreasing growth [CO2] only below 400 µmol mol?1. The substantial increase in gs at subambient [CO2] for S. dimidiatum was weakly correlated with the maximum velocity of carboxylation (Vcmax; r2 = 0·27) and was not associated with CO2 saturated photosynthesis (Amax). The response of gs to Ci did not vary with growth [CO2] in Bromus japonicus (C3 annual grass) or Bothriochloa ischaemum (C4 perennial grass), suggesting that stomatal acclimation had not occurred in these species. Stomatal density, which increased with rising [CO2] in both C3 species, was not correlated with gs. Larger stomatal size at subambient [CO2], however, may be associated with stomatal acclimation in S. dimidiatum. Incorporating stomatal acclimation into modelling studies could improve the ability to predict changes in ecosystem water fluxes and water availability with rising CO2 and to understand their magnitudes relative to the past. 相似文献

Abstract. The photosynthetic responses to temperature in C3, C3-C4 intermediate, and C4 species in the genus Flaveria were examined in an effort to identify whether the reduced photorespiration rates characteristic of C3-C4 intermediate photosynthesis result in adaptive advantages at warm leaf temperatures. Reduced photorespiration rates were reflected in lower CO2 compensation points at all temperatures examined in the C3-C4 intermediate, Flaveria floridana, compared to the C3 species, F. cronquistii. The C3-C4 intermediate, F. floridana, exhibited a C3-like photosynthetic temperature dependence, except for relatively higher photosynthesis rates at warm leaf temperatures compared to the C3 species, F. cronquistii. Using models of C3 and C3-C4 intermediate photosynthesis, it was predicted that by recycling photorespired CO2 in bundle-sheath cells, as occurs in many C3-C4 intermediates, photosynthesis rates at 35°C could be increased by 28%, compared to a C3 plant. Without recycling photorespired CO2, it was calculated that in order to improve photosynthesis rates at 35°C by this amount in C3 plants, (1) intercellular CO2 partial pressures would have to be increased from 25 to 31 Pa, resulting in a 57% decrease in water-use efficiency, or (2) the activity of RuBP carboxylase would have to be increased by 32%, resulting in a 22% decrease in nitrogen-use efficiency. In addition to the recycling of photorespired CO2, leaves of F. floridana appear to effectively concentrate CO2 at the active site of RuBP carboxylase, increasing the apparent carboxylation efficiency per unit of in vitro RuBP carboxylase activity. The CO2-concentrating activity also appears to reduce the temperature sensitivity of the carboxylation efficiency in F. floridana compared to F. cronquistii. The carboxylation efficiency per unit of RuBP carboxylase activity decreased by only 38% in F. floridana, compared to 50% in F. cronquistii, as leaf temperature was raised from 25 to 35°C. The C3-C4 intermediate, F. ramosissima, exhibited a photosynthetic temperature temperature response curve that was more similar to the C4 species, F. trinervia, than the C3 species, F. cronquistii. The C4-like pattern is probably related to the advanced nature of C4-like biochemical traits in F. ramosissima The results demonstrate that reductions in photorespiration rates in C3-C4 intermediate plants create photosynthetic advantages at warm leaf temperatures that in C3 plants could only be achieved through substantial costs to water-use efficiency and/or nitrogen-use efficiency. 相似文献

Abstract. While photosynthesis of C3 plants is stimulated by an increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration, photosynthetic capacity is often reduced after long-term exposure to elevated CO2 . This reduction appears to be brought about by end product inhibition, resulting from an imbalance in the supply and demand of carbohydrates. A review of the literature revealed that the reduction of photosynthetic capacity in elevated CO2 was most pronounced when the increased supply of carbohydrates was combined with small sink size. The volume of pots in which plants were grown affected the sink size by restricting root growth. While plants grown in small pots had a reduced photosynthetic capacity, plants grown in the field showed no reduction or an increase in this capacity. Pot volume also determined the effect of elevated CO2 on the root/shoot ratio: the root/shoot ratio increased when root growth was not restricted and decreased in plants grown in small pots. The data presented in this paper suggest that plants growing in the field will maintain a high photosynthetic capacity as the atmospheric CO2 level continues to rise. 相似文献

The atmospheric CO2 concentration has increased from the pre-industrial concentration of about 280 μmol mol−1 to its present concentration of over 350 μmol mol−1, and continues to increase. As the rate of photosynthesis in C3 plants is strongly dependent on CO2 concentration, this should have a marked effect on photosynthesis, and hence on plant growth and productivity. The magnitude of photo-synthetic responses can be calculated based on the well-developed theory of photosynthetic response to intercellular CO2 concentration. A simple biochemically based model of photosynthesis was coupled to a model of stomatal conductance to calculate photosynthetic responses to ambient CO2 concentration. In the combined model, photosynthesis was much more responsive to CO2 at high than at low temperatures. At 350 μmol mol−1, photosynthesis at 35°C reached 51% of the rate that would have been possible with non-limiting CO2, whereas at 5°C, 77% of the CO2 non-limited rate was attained. Relative CO2 sensitivity also became smaller at elevated CO2, as CO2 concentration increased towards saturation. As photosynthesis was far from being saturated at the current ambient CO2 concentration, considerable further gains in photosynthesis were predicted through continuing increases in CO2 concentration. The strong interaction with temperature also leads to photosynthesis in different global regions experiencing very different sensitivities to increasing CO2 concentrations. 相似文献

Evidence that inducible C4 -type photosynthesis is a chloroplastic CO2 -concentrating mechanism in Hydrilla, a submersed monocot 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle exhibits an inducible C4-type photosynthetic cycle, but lacks Kranz anatomy. Leaves in the C4-type state (but not C3-type) contained up to 5-fold higher internal dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations than the medium, indicating that they possessed a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Several lines of evidence indicated that the chloroplast was the likely site of CO2 generation. From C4-type leaf [DIC] measurements, the estimated chloroplastic free [CO2] was 400 mmol m?3. This gave a calculated 2% O2 inhibition of photosynthesis, which was identical to the measured value, and provided independent evidence that the estimated [CO2] was close to the true value. A homogeneous distribution of DIC in the C4-type leaf could not account for such a high [CO2], or the resultant low O2 inhibition. For C3-type leaves the estimated chloroplastic [CO2] was only 7 mmol m?3, which gave high, and similar, calculated and measured O2 inhibition values of 22 and 26%, respectively. The CCM did not appear to be located at the plasma membrane, as it operated at low and high pH, indicating that it was independent of use of HCO3? from the medium. Also, both C3? and C4-type Hydrilla leaves showed pH polarity in the light, with abaxial and adaxial boundary layer values of about pH 4·0 and 10·5, respectively. Thus, pH polarity was not a direct component of the CCM, though it probably improved access to HCO3. Additionally, iodoacetamide and methyl viologen greatly reduced abaxial acidification, but not the steady-state CCM. Inhibitor studies suggested that the CCM required photosynthetically generated ATP, but Calvin cycle activity was not essential. Both leaf types accumulated DIC in the dark by an ATP-requiring process, possibly respiration, and C4-type leaves fixed CO2 at 11·8% of the light rate. The operation of a CCM to minimize photorespiration, and the ability to recapture respiratory CO2 at night, would conserve DIC in a densely vegetated lake environment where daytime [CO2] is severely limiting, while [O2] and temperatures are high. 相似文献

The interaction of high temperature and elevated CO2 on photosynthetic acclimation of single leaves of rice in situ 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. IR72) was grown at three different CO2 concentrations (ambient, ambient + 200 μmol mol−1 , ambient + 300 μmol mol−1 ) at two different growth temperatures (ambient, ambient + 4°C) from sowing to maturity to determine longterm photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 with and without increasing temperature. Single leaves of rice showed a cooperative enhancement of photosynthetic rate with elevated CO2 and temperature during tillering, relative to the elevated CO2 condition alone. However, after flowering, the degree of photosynthetic stimulation by elevated CO2 was reduced for the ambient + 4°C treatment. This increasing insensitivity to CO2 appeared to be accompanied by a reduction in ribulose-1.5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity and/or concentration as evidenced by the reduction in the assimilation (A) to internal CO2 (C1 ) response curve. The reproductive response (e.g. percent filled grains, panicle weight) was reduced at the higher growth temperature and presumably reflects a greater increase in floral sterility. Results indicate that while CO2 and temperature could act synergistically at the biochemical level, the direct effect of temperature on floral development with a subsequent reduction in carbon utilization may change sink strength so as to limit photosynthetic stimulation by elevated CO2 concentration. 相似文献

Stomatal function mediates physiological trade‐offs associated with maintaining a favourable H2O balance in leaf tissues while acquiring CO2 as a photosynthetic substrate. The C3 and C4 species appear to have different patterns of stomatal response to changing light conditions, and variation in this behaviour may have played a role in the functional diversification of the different photosynthetic pathways. In the current study, we used gain analysis theory to characterize the stomatal conductance response to light intensity in nine different C3, C4 and C3‐C4 intermediate species Flaveria species. The response of stomatal conductance (gs) to a change in light intensity represents both a direct (related to a change in incident light intensity, I) and indirect (related to a change in intercellular CO2 concentration, Ci) response. The slope of the line relating the change in gs to Ci was steeper in C4 species, compared with C3 species, with C3‐C4 species having an intermediate response. This response reflects the greater relative contribution of the indirect versus direct component of the gs versus I response in the C4 species. The C3‐C4 species, Flaveria floridana, exhibited a C4‐like response whereas the C3‐C4 species, Flaveria sonorensis and Flaveria chloraefolia, exhibited C3‐like responses, similar to their hypothesized position along the evolutionary trajectory of the development of C4 photosynthesis. There was a positive correlation between the relative contribution of the indirect component of the gs versus I response and water use efficiency when evaluated across all species. Assuming that the C3‐C4 intermediate species reflect an evolutionary progression from fully expressed C3 ancestors, the results of the current study demonstrate an increase in the contribution of the indirect component of the gs versus I response as taxa evolve toward the C4 extreme. The greater relative contribution of the indirect component of the stomatal response occurs through both increases in the indirect stomatal components and through decreases in the direct. Increases in the magnitude of the indirect component may be related to the maintenance of higher water use efficiencies in the intermediate evolutionary stages, before the appearance of fully integrated C4 photosynthesis. 相似文献

Nonlinear responses of photosynthesis to the CO2 concentration at which plants were grown (Cg) have been often reported in the literature. This study was designed to develop mechanistic understanding of the nonlinear responses with both experimental and modelling approaches. Soybean (Glycine max) was grown in five levels of Cg (280, 350, 525, 700, 1000 ppm) with either a high or low rate of nitrogen fertilization. When the rate of nitrogen fertilization was high, the photosynthetic rate measured at Cg was highest in plants from the 700 ppm CO2 treatment. When the rate of nitrogen fertilization was low, little variation was observed in the photosynthetic rates of plants from the different treatments measured at their respective Cg. Measurements of CO2-induced changes in mass-based leaf nitrogen concentration (nm, an index of changes in biochemical processes) and leaf mass per unit area (h, an index of morphological properties) were used in a model and indicate that the nonlinearity of photosynthetic responses to Cg is largely determined by relative changes in photosynthetic sensitivity, biochemical downregulation, and morphological upregulation. In order to further understand the nonlinear responses, we compiled data from the literature on CO2-induced changes in nm and h. These compiled data indicate that h generally increases and nm usually decreases with increasing Cg, but that the trajectories and magnitudes of the changes in h and nm vary with species and growth environments. Integration of these variables (nm and h) into a biochemically based model of photosynthesis enabled us to predict diverse responses of photosynthesis to Cg. Thus a general mechanism is suggested for the highly variable, nonlinear responses of photosynthesis to Cg reported in the literature. 相似文献

There is continuing controversy over whether a degree of C4 photosynthetic metabolism exists in ears of C3 cereals. In this context, CO2 exchange and the initial products of photosynthesis were examined in flag leaf blades and various ear parts of two durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and two six-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Three weeks after anthesis, the CO2 compensation concentration at 210 mmol mol?1 O2 in durum wheat and barley ear parts was similar to or greater than that in flag leaves. The O2 dependence of the CO2 compensation concentration in durum wheat ear parts, as well as in the flag leaf blade, was linear, as expected for C3 photosynthesis. In a complementary experiment, intact and attached ears and flag leaf blades of barley and durum wheat were radio-labelled with 14CO2 during a 10s pulse, and the initial products of fixation were studied in various parts of the ears (awns, glumes, inner bracts and grains) and in the flag leaf blade. All tissues assimilated CO2 mainly by the Calvin (C3) cycle, with little fixation of 14CO2 into the C4 acids malate and aspartate (about 10% or less). These collective data support the conclusion that in the ear parts of these C3 cereals C4 photosynthetic metabolism is nil. 相似文献

Abstract. The similarities between the component reactions of the presently known variants of photosynthetic carbon metabolism (crassulacean acid metabolism, the acid metabolism of Tillandsia usneoides , aquatic acid metabolism, and C4 photosynthesis) when considered along with their widely scattered taxonomic distribution strongly suggest polyphyletic origins resulting from evolutionary modification of a common, universally distributed metabolic sequence. The synthesis and consumption of four-carbon acids in the cation-balancing reactions involved in the regulation of stomatal aperture appear to exhibit all of the characteristics likely to be displayed by such a metabolic progenitor.
The present status of the proposal that the expression of aspects of stomatal metabolism in photosynthetic mesophyll cells represents the basis for the evolution of the variant of photosynthetic carbon metabolism is discussed. The prospects of experimental approaches which may yield information relevant to the proposal are also explored. 相似文献

Abstract Evidence is drawn from previous studies to argue that C3—C4 intermediate plants are evolutionary intermediates, evolving from fully-expressed C3 plants towards fully-expressed C4 plants. On the basis of this conclusion, C3—C4 intermediates are examined to elucidate possible patterns that have been followed during the evolution of C4 photosynthesis. An hypothesis is proposed that the initial step in C4-evolution was the development of bundle-sheath metabolism that reduced apparent photorespiration by an efficient recycling of CO2 using RuBP carboxylase. The CO2-recycling mechanism appears to involve the differential compartmentation of glycine decarboxylase between mesophyll and bundle-sheath cells, such that most of the activity is in the bundlesheath cells. Subsequently, elevated phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase activities are proposed to have evolved as a means of enhancing the recycling of photorespired CO2. As the activity of PEP carboxylase increased to higher values, other enzymes in the C4-pathway are proposed to have increased in activity to facilitate the processing of the products of C4-assimilation and provide PEP substrate to PEP carboxylase with greater efficiency. Initially, such a ‘C4-cycle’ would not have been differentially compartmentalized between mesophyll and bundlesheath cells as is typical of fully-expressed C4 plants. Such metabolism would have limited benefit in terms of concentrating CO2 at RuBP carboxylase and, therefore, also be of little benefit for improving water- and nitrogen-use efficiencies. However, the development of such a limited C4-cycle would have represented a preadaptation capable of evolving into the leaf biochemistry typical of fully-expressed C4 plants. Thus, during the initial stages of C4-evolution it is proposed that improvements in photorespiratory CO2-loss and their influence on increasing the rate of net CO2 assimilation per unit leaf area represented the evolutionary ‘driving-force’. Improved resourceuse efficiency resulting from an efficient CO2-concentrating mechanism is proposed as the driving force during the later stages. 相似文献

Influence of light intensity during growth on photosynthesis and activity of several key photosynthetic enzymes in a C4 plant (Zea mays) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Maize ( Zea mays L. Hybrid Sweet Corn, Royal Crest), a C4 plant, was grown under different light regimes, after which the rate of photosynthesis and activities of several photosynthetic enzymes (per unit leaf chlorophyll) were measured at different light intensities. Plants were grown outdoors under direct sunlight or 23% of direct sunlight, and in growth chambers at photosynthetic photon flux densities of about 20% and 8% of direct sunlight. The plants grown under direct sunlight had a higher light compensation point than plants grown under lower light. At a light intensity about 25% of direct sunlight, plants from all growth regimes had a similar rate of photosynthesis. Under saturating levels of light the plants grown under direct sunlight had a substantially higher rate of photosynthesis than plants grown under the lower light regimes. The higher photosynthetic capacity in the plants grown under direct sunlight was accompanied by an increased activity of several photosynthetic enzymes and in the amount of the soluble protein in the leaf. Among five photosynthetic enzymes examined, RuBP carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39) and pyruvate, Pi dikinase (EC 2.7.9.1) were generally just sufficient to account for rates of photosynthesis under saturating light; thus, these may be rate limiting enzymes in C4 photosynthesis. Pyruvate, Pi dikinase and NADP-malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.82) were the only enzymes examined which were light activated and increased in activity with increasing light intensity. In the low light grown plants the activity of pyruvate, Pi dikinase closely paralleled the photosynthetic rate measured under different light levels. With the plants grown under direct sunlight, as light intensity was increased the activation of pyruvate, Pi dikinase and NADP+ -malate dehydrogenase proceeded more rapidly than photosynthesis. 相似文献

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Mercia) was grown at two different atmospheric CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol−1), two temperatures [ambient temperature (i.e. tracking the open air) and ambient +4°C] and two rates of nitrogen supply (equivalent to 489 kg ha−1 and 87 kg ha−1). Leaves grown at 700 μmol mol−1 CO2 had slightly greater photosynthetic capacity (10% mean increase over the experiment) than those grown at ambient CO2 concentration, but there were no differences in carboxylation efficiency or apparent quantum yield. The amounts of chlorophyll, soluble protein and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) per unit leaf area did not change with long-term exposure to elevated CO2 concentration. Thus winter wheat, grown under simulated field conditions, for which total biomass was large compared to normal field production, did not experience loss of components of the photosynthetic system or loss of photosynthetic competence with elevated CO2 concentration. However, nitrogen supply and temperature had large effects on photosynthetic characteristics but did not interact with elevated CO2 concentration. Nitrogen deficiency resulted in decreases in the contents of protein, including Rubisco, and chlorophyll, and decreased photosynthetic capacity and carboxylation efficiency. An increase in temperature also reduced these components and shortened the effective life of the leaves, reducing the duration of high photosynthetic capacity. 相似文献

Comparative ecophysiology of C3 and C4 plants 总被引:2,自引:3,他引:2
Abstract. In this review we relate the physiological significance of C4 photosynthesis to plant performance in nature. We begin with an examination of the physiological consequences of the C4 pathway on photosynthesis, then discuss the ecophysiological performance of C4 plants in contrasting environments. We then compare the performance of C3 and C4 plants when they occur together in similar habitats, and finally discuss the distribution of C4 photosynthesis with respect to the physical environment, phylogeny, and life form. 相似文献

C4 photosynthesis at low temperatures 总被引:4,自引:8,他引:4

Abstract. C4 plants grown in optimum conditions are, by comparison to C3 , capable of higher maximum dry-matter yields and greater efficiencies of water and nitrogen use, yet they are rare outside the subtropics. Both latitudinal and altitudinal limits of C4 distributions correlate most closely with a mean minimum temperature of 8-10°C during the period of active growth. The possibility that the C4 process is inherently incapable of functioning at low temperatures is examined. The reversible effects of chilling on the quantum efficiency of C4 photosynthesis and the functioning of the individual steps in the C4 cycle are examined. Chilling also produces an irreversible loss of capacity to assimilate CO2 which is directly proportional to the light received during chilling. It is suggested that the reversible reduction in capacity to assimilate CO2 and the lack of an alternative pathway for the utilization of lightgenerated reducing power may make C4 species more prone to chilling-dependent photoinhibition. Laboratory studies and limited field observations suggest that this damage would be most likely to occur during photosynthetic induction at the temperatures and light levels encountered on clear, cool mornings during the spring and early summer in cool climates. Even those C4 species occurring naturally in cool climates do not appear fully capable of tolerating these conditions; indeed their growth patterns suggest that they may be adapted by avoiding 'rather than enduring' such conditions. 相似文献

Primary events in photosynthetic (PS) acclimation to elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) occur at the molecular level in leaf mesophyll cells, but final growth response to [CO2] involves acclimation responses associated with photosynthate partitioning among plant organs in relation to resources limiting growth. Source–sink interactions, particularly with regard to carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), are key determinants of PS acclimation to elevated [CO2] at the whole-plant level. In the long term, PS and growth response to [CO2] are dependent on genotypic and environmental factors affecting the plant's ability to develop new sinks for C, and acquire adequate N and other resources to support an enhanced growth potential. Growth at elevated [CO2] usually increases N use efficiency because PS rates can be maintained at levels comparable to those observed at ambient [CO2] with less N investment in PS enzymes. A frequent acclimation response, particularly under N-limited conditions, is for the accumulation of leaf carbohydrates at elevated [CO2] to lead to repression of genes associated with the production of PS enzymes. The hypothesis that this is an adaptive response, leading to a diversion of N to plant organs where it is of greatest benefit in terms of competitive ability and reproductive fitness, needs to be more rigorously tested. The biological control mechanisms which plants have evolved to acclimate to shifts in source–sink balance caused by elevated [CO2] are complex, and will only be fully elucidated by probing at all scales along the hierarchy from molecular to ecosystem. Use of environmental manipulations and genotypic comparisons will facilitate the testing of specific hypotheses. Improving our ability to predict PS acclimation to [CO2] will require the integration of results from laboratory studies using simple model systems with results from whole-plant studies that include measurements of processes operating at several scales. C4 photosynthesis in a single C3 cell is theoretically inefficient but may ameliorate internal CO2 diffusion limitations of C3 leaves 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1

Attempts are being made to introduce C4 photosynthetic characteristics into C3 crop plants by genetic manipulation. This research has focused on engineering single‐celled C4‐type CO2 concentrating mechanisms into C3 plants such as rice. Herein the pros and cons of such approaches are discussed with a focus on CO2 diffusion, utilizing a mathematical model of single‐cell C4 photosynthesis. It is shown that a high bundle sheath resistance to CO2 diffusion is an essential feature of energy‐efficient C4 photosynthesis. The large chloroplast surface area appressed to the intercellular airspace in C3 leaves generates low internal resistance to CO2 diffusion, thereby limiting the energy efficiency of a single‐cell C4 concentrating mechanism, which relies on concentrating CO2 within chloroplasts of C3 leaves. Nevertheless the model demonstrates that the drop in CO2 partial pressure, pCO2, that exists between intercellular airspace and chloroplasts in C3 leaves at high photosynthetic rates, can be reversed under high irradiance when energy is not limiting. The model shows that this is particularly effective at lower intercellular pCO2. Such a system may therefore be of benefit in water‐limited conditions when stomata are closed and low intercellular pCO2 increases photorespiration. 相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 (Ca) concentration has increased significantly during the last 20 000 years, and is projected to double this century. Despite the importance of belowground processes in the global carbon cycle, community‐level and single species root responses to rising Ca are not well understood. We measured net community root biomass over 3 years using ingrowth cores in a natural C3–C4 grassland exposed to a gradient of Ca from preglacial to future levels (230–550 μmol mol?1). Root windows and minirhizotron tubes were installed below naturally occurring stands of the C4 perennial grass Bothriochloa ischaemum and its roots were measured for respiration, carbohydrate concentration, specific root length (SRL), production, and lifespan over 2 years. Community root biomass increased significantly (P<0.05) with Ca over initial conditions, with linear or curvilinear responses depending on sample date. In contrast, B. ischaemum produced significantly more roots at subambient than elevated Ca in minirhizotrons. The lifespan of roots with five or more neighboring roots in minirhizotron windows decreased significantly at high Ca, suggesting that after dense root growth depletes soil resource patches, plants with carbon surpluses readily shed these roots. Root respiration in B. ischaemum showed a curvilinear response to Ca under moist conditions in June 2000, with the lowest rates at Ca<300 μmol mol?1 and peak activity at 450 μmol mol?1 in a quadratic model. B. ischaemum roots at subambient Ca had higher SRLs and slightly higher carbohydrate concentrations than those at higher Ca, which may be related to drier soils at low Ca. Our data emphasize that belowground responses of plant communities to Ca can be quite different from those of the individual species, and suggest that complex interactions between and among roots and their immediate soil environment influence the responses of root physiology and lifespan to changing Ca. 相似文献
