Since 1838, many discoveries of the tetrapod footprint taxon Chirotherium and closely similar forms have been reported from the British Middle Triassic. These have been assigned to dozens of ichnotaxa, so that the identification and interpretation of members of the ichnofamily Chirotheriidae have become confused. Part 1 of this article deals with ichnotaxonomy. Revision of all the available material shows that there are at least three valid ichnospecies of Chirotherium, one of Synaptichnium, and one of Isochirotherium. The presence of a fourth related ichnogenus, Brachychirotherium, cannot yet be confirmed in Britain. Emended diagnoses are proposed for all four ichnogenera; they may be readily distinguished by the shape of the hand (manus) and foot (pes) impression and especially by the phalangeal counts. The natural cast of a probable tail impression, associated with Chirotheriidae footprints from the British Triassic is figured for the first time, as is a rare detailed impression of skin and the tarsal region of an Isochirotherium lomasi pes cast. Part 2 provides a critical history of the earliest discoveries of each of these ichnogenera in the British Triassic. It is subdivided into divisions, depending on the quality of data and existence of specimens, the localities in Britain which have yielded these ichnogenera; a detailed history and discussion is provided of the earliest discoveries made at each locality. The stratigraphic distribution and paleological significance of the ichnogenera/species are assessed. 相似文献

Patterns of bone microstructure have frequently been used to deduce dynamics and processes of growth in extant and fossil tetrapods. Often, the various types of primary bone tissue have been associated with different bone deposition rates and more recently such deductions have extended to patterns observed in dinosaur bone microstructure. These previous studies are challenged by the findings of the current research, which integrates an experimental neontological approach and a paleontological comparison. We use tetracycline labeling and morphometry to study the variability of bone deposition rates in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) growing under different experimental conditions. We compare resulting patterns in bone microstructure with those found in fossil birds and other dinosaurs. We found that a single type of primary bone varies significantly in rates of growth in response to environmental conditions. Ranging between 10-50 microm per day, rates of growth overlap with the full range of bone deposition rates that were previously associated with different patterns of bone histology. Bone formation rate was significantly affected by environmental/experimental conditions, skeletal element, and age. In the quail, the experimental conditions did not result in formation of lines of arrested growth (LAGs). Because of the observed variation of bone deposition rates in response to variation in environmental conditions, we conclude that bone deposition rates measured in extant birds cannot simply be extrapolated to their fossil relatives. Additionally, we observe the variable incidence of LAGs and annuli among several dinosaur species, including fossil birds, extant sauropsids, as well as nonmammalian synapsids, and some extant mammals. This suggests that the ancestral condition of the response of bone to environmental conditions was variable. We propose that such developmental plasticity in modern birds may be reduced in association with the shortened developmental time during the later evolution of the ornithurine birds. 相似文献

Whales are unique among vertebrates because of the enormous oil reserves held in their soft tissue and bone. These ‘biofuel’ stores have been used by humans from prehistoric times to more recent industrial-scale whaling. Deep-sea biologists have now discovered that the oily bones of dead whales on the seabed are also used by specialist and generalist scavenging communities, including many unique organisms recently described as new to science. In the context of both cetacean and deep-sea invertebrate biology, we review scientific knowledge on the oil content of bone from several of the great whale species: Balaenoptera musculus, Balaenoptera physalus, Balaenoptera borealis, Megaptera novaeangliae, Eschrichtius robustus, Physeter macrocephalus and the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba. We show that data collected by scientists over 50 years ago during the heyday of industrial whaling explain several interesting phenomena with regard to the decay of whale remains. Variations in the lipid content of bones from different parts of a whale correspond closely with recently observed differences in the taphonomy of deep-sea whale carcasses and observed biases in the frequency of whale bones at archaeological sites. 相似文献

A characteristic aquatic bioerosion, which peripherally penetrates the bone cortex, has previously been described from the 7‐million‐year‐old Cerro de la Garita calcareous lakeshore site (Concud, Teruel, Spain). This site has also yielded body fossils that appear to have been partly or entirely replaced by a delicate, white ‘crumbly substance’ that disaggregates upon touch. High‐resolution image and chemical analyses of the ‘crumbly substance’, bioeroded and non‐altered fossils, fresh bones and the site sediment are here described. The ‘crumbly substance’ was identified as calcite formed by non‐cemented micro‐crystals, preserving identical micro‐tunnelling than was observed in bioeroded fossil bones. This paper reports these results in detail and discusses how the original bone bioapatite may have been transformed. Results of these analyses have led us to propose that micro‐organisms, peripherally boring the bone, could also have influenced the transformation of bone bioapatite to calcite under specific micro‐environmental conditions. 相似文献

A diverse assemblage of dinosaur and bird tracks from Niobrara County, Wyoming, represents the first vertebrate ichnofauna reported from the bone-rich Lance Formation (Maastrichtian, Upper Cretaceous). The ichnofauna includes a hadrosaur track with skin impressions; three theropod track types, including the tetradactyl track Saurexallopus zerbsti (ichnosp. nov.); a tridactyl dinosaur footprint with a fusiform digit III; possible Tyrannosaurus tracks; four distinctive avian ichnites; and invertebrate traces. The footprints are generally well-preserved and so offer a unique insight into the ecology of a small river valley during the Maastrichtian. Saurexallopus zerbsti ichnosp. nov. from the Lance is similar to Saurexallopus lovei recently reported from the Maastrichtian, Harebell Formation, of northwestern Wyoming, but is represented by much better material, facilitating amendment of the ichnogenus. Skeletal equivalents for Saurexallopus are not currently known. Similarly, the tridactyl track with fusiform digit III is similar to footprints reported from the coeval Laramie Formation of Colorado and may also be similar to ichnogenus Ornithomimipus from the Edmonton Group of Alberta (though not necessarily of ornithomimid affinity). The hadrosaurian track with the skin impression is reminiscent of a similar ichnite reported from the Maastrichtian, St. Mary River Formation in Alberta, which is herein named Hadrosauropodus langstoni as part of a reassessment of Cretaceous ornithopod track ichnotaxonomy. Such correlations demonstrate the utility of tracks for local or regional biostratigraphy (palichnostratigraphy) in western North America. It is also clear that tracks add to our knowledge of the composition and distribution of dinosaurian and avian components of Maastrichtian faunas. In particular the bird tracks indicate a diversity of at least four species, one of which was a semi-palmate form, hitherto unknown in the ichnological record and named Sarjeantichnus semipalmatus. 相似文献

In 1842 Richard Owen described a Triassic reptile from Grinshill, Shropshire, which he named Rhynchosaurus articeps. He suggested that footprints found in the same beds were those of this fossil. However, the footprints were characterised by a backward-pointing toe and so were of the type now known as Rotodactylus. Huxley (1877), Woodward (1907), and Benton (1990) have subsequently shown that the five digits of Rhynchosaurus point forward and so could not have left these footprints. In 1896 Beasley classified the Triassic footprints found in Cheshire, his type D prints being those earlier assigned to rhynchosaurs. His D1 prints were named Rhynchosauroides articeps by Maidwell (1911). However, these D1 prints, which come from a lower horizon in the Anisian, are consistently too small to match Owen's fossil. Beasley's D3 form, now named Synaptichnium pseudosuchoides Nopcsa, is more likely to represent the footprints of Rhynchosaurus articeps, although further research and study of more complete trackways will be necessary to clarify whether these are the footprints of Archosauromorphs, such as rhynchosaurs or possibly those of Archosauriformes, for example, erythrosuchids or proterosuchids. Maidwell's Rhynchosauroides rectipes and Rhynchosauroides membranipes, originally believed to be distinct ichnospecies, are more likely to be synonyms, their apparent differences reflecting variations in the substrate traversed. 相似文献

Bone microstructure reflects physiological characteristics and has been shown to contain phylogenetic and ecological signals. Although mammalian long bone histology is receiving increasing attention, systematic examination of the main clades has not yet been performed. Here we describe the long bone microstructure of Xenarthra based on thin sections representing twenty-two species. Additionally, patterns in bone compactness of humeri and femora are investigated. The primary bone tissue of xenarthran long bones is composed of a mixture of woven, parallel-fibered and lamellar bone. The vascular canals have a longitudinal, reticular or radial orientation and are mostly arranged in an irregular manner. Concentric rows of vascular canals and laminar organization of the tissue are only found in anteater bones. The long bones of adult specimens are marked by dense Haversian bone, a feature that has been noted for most groups of mammals. In the long bones of armadillos, secondary osteons have an oblique orientation within the three-dimensional bone tissue, thus resulting in their irregular shape when the bones are sectioned transversely. Secondary remodeling is generally more extensive in large taxa than in small taxa, and this could be caused by increased loading. Lines of arrested growth are assumed to be present in all specimens, but they are restricted to the outermost layer in bones of armadillos and are often masked by secondary remodeling in large taxa. Parameters of bone compactness show a pattern in the femur that separates Cingulata and Pilosa (Folivora and Vermilingua), with cingulates having a lower compactness than pilosans. In addition, cingulates show an allometric relationship between humeral and femoral bone compactness. 相似文献

We describe histochemical techniques for detecting DNA within the osteocytic lacunae of ancient bones. The bones examined were fragments of femurs from two human individuals found in the Pompeian C. I. Polybius house and fragments of metacarpals from two horses (Equus sp.) found in the Pompeian “Casti Amanti” house. Both buildings were buried by the 79 A. D. Vesuvius eruption. Fragments of femurs from a modern horse, a modern swine and a modern amphibian also were studied as controls. Some bone sections were stained with two different DNA-specific fluorochromes, 4′ -′ 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and chromomycin A3 (CMA), while others were stained by the Feulgen reaction. All of the techniques gave a positive reaction within the osteocytic lacunae. Histological analysis of the undecalcified, ground and unstained sections agreed well with results of bone sections stained with either the fluorochromes or the Feulgen reaction. Bones showing good histology also were positive by our DNA-specific stain. Histochemical and histological analyses correlated well with the success of DNA extraction and amplification. Using conventional DNA-specific histochemical techniques in conjunction with histological analysis can be useful in the study of DNA extracted from ancient bone remains while reducing both the amount of time and cost. 相似文献

AbstractA new ichnospecies, Linichnus bromleyi, is described on bone substrate as the result of a very likely predator/scavenger interaction. L. bromleyi consists of a single groove with a non-serrated edge. This new ichnotaxon is compared with L. serratus which was defined as a single elongate serrate-edged groove. L. bromleyi has been identified over the surface of bones of marine mammals (in particular, cetaceans and pinnipeds) from two Pliocene outcrops of Andalusia, southern Spain. The new ichnospecies can be clearly related with a trophic interaction between sharks and marine mammals (mainly whales, dolphins and seals). 相似文献

We have developed a new method to observe bone and to document growth in living animals. The technique involves injecting calcein, a fluorescent calcium deposition marker, waiting approximately 4 hr for it to clear the vascular system, and observing bone directly through the toenails of lightly anesthetized living animals. Bone regrowth can be monitored in situ by amputating the digit through the nail plate, waiting the desired number of days, and injecting a second fluorescent label, alizarin red. Bone that has regrown since the amputation appears as a red area distal to the green calcein label on toes of lightly anesthetized animals when viewed under FITC fluorescence. This method has been used to demonstrate blocked bone synthesis and to quantitate significant differences in bone growth in control and experimental toes of individual animals. Advantages of this method include its simplicity, the use of fewer animals to collect sequential data, and increased reliability of repeated microscopic measurements using the same animal. 相似文献

Bone reconstruction can be performed with an autogeneic graft from various donor regions. Osteoconductive and osteoinductive
bone substitutes originate from substances of diverse chemical and morphological types and can have a synthetic or a biological
derivation. Alongside autogeneic bone transplants and allogenic and xenogeneic bone implants, alloplastic bone replacements
of synthetic or semi-synthetic origin are being used for defect reconstruction. In an animal model in rabbits five bone substitutes
and one autogeneic graft were surgically incorporated into identical bone defects (10times 10 mm in size) in six anatomically defined regions of the skull. With scintigraphic and histological methods, the metabolic
dynamics of the bone is examined as it reacts to the transplantation of autogeneic bone or to implanted bone replacement material.
The different autogeneic, xenogeneic and alloplastic bone replacement materials can be differentiated according to the functional
quality of the new tissue and the dynamics of the bone conversion thus induced. In the comparison of mineralized, osteoconductive
bone subsitutes (TCP, HA, calcium carbonate ceramics) with demineralized, osteoinductive implants (DBM new, DBM old) and autogeneic
bone grafts, the bone inducing matrices show the largest quantity of new bone formation, making possible a volume-constant
reconstruction.

Bone tissue engineering: the role of interstitial fluid flow 总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
It is well established that vascularization is required for effective bone healing. This implies that blood flow and interstitial fluid (ISF) flow are required for healing and maintenance of bone. The fact that changes in bone blood flow and ISF flow are associated with changes in bone remodeling and formation support this theory. ISF flow in bone results from transcortical pressure gradients produced by vascular and hydrostatic pressure, and mechanical loading. Conditions observed to alter flow rates include increases in venous pressure in hypertension, fluid shifts occurring in bedrest and microgravity, increases in vascularization during the injury-healing response, and mechanical compression and bending of bone during exercise. These conditions also induce changes in bone remodeling. Previously, we hypothesized that interstitial fluid flow in bone, and in particular fluid shear stress, serves to mediate signal transduction in mechanical loading- and injury-induced remodeling. In addition, we proposed that a lack or decrease of ISF flow results in the bone loss observed in disuse and microgravity. The purpose of this article is to review ISF flow in bone and its role in osteogenesis. 相似文献

A selective staining technique for the identification and differentiation of cancellous bone from medullary bone of the laying hen by image analysis is described. Undecalcified Polymaster resin sections were oxidized in acidified potassium permanganate and oxalic acid before being immersed in an ammoniacal silver solution. The sections were reduced in formalin, fixed in sodium thiosulfate and counterstained in naphthalene black 10B which was dissolved in picric and acetic acids. Intensely stained cancellous bone was prominent with this technique compared with a paler medullary bone component which permitted the former to be easily recognized and measured by image analysis. 相似文献
