Seabass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) swimming activity was compared between natural environments and aquaculture facilities. Behaviour under natural conditions was assessed in a saltmarsh pond (250 m2, 18 × 14 × 0·8 m) using acoustic telemetry. From several surveys, we documented the diel activity rhythm and demonstrated group effects on swimming patterns and amplitudes by comparing activity of solitary fish with that of a fish living in a group of 60. Consequences of weather variability were also analysed and revealed a high sensitivity of fish to atmospheric conditions for both swimming and demand‐feeding behaviour. Behaviour in fish tanks was also studied using acoustic telemetry, as part of the EUREKA EU1 960 'Aqua‐Maki 2' project investigating aspects of fish culture in re-circulating tanks under high density. A re-circulating hexagonal tank (5·4 × 5·4 m, 1·8 m depth, 48 m3) was equipped with positioning and demand‐feeding systems, oxygen and temperature probes. Initial density was 50 kg m3 in March and rose to 90 kg m3 at the end of the experiment in May. During this period, the movements of nine fish were continuously recorded for 24 h each, reaching a total of six 24 h episode at eight days interval. Swimming activity was analysed in terms of activity rhythms and space occupation specially around feeding events. The two data set and main results will be presented and compared to assess seabass behavioural plasticity and sensitivity to husbandry conditions.  相似文献

To simulate swimming in a trawl, age 3 year brown trout Salmo trutta (L.) were made to swim against a flow of 0·5 m s−1 for 60 min. To simulate cold shock, similar to placing them in a chilling tank, the fish were kept for 10 min in a tank containing ice and water. To simulate the combined stressors, the fish were first made to swim followed by a cold shock. The fish were in a comatose state 10 min after cold shock and combined stressors but conscious after swimming only. All the fish survived until the end of the studied recovery period (maximum 24 h). Cold shock after swimming (combined stressors v . swimming only) did not produce higher blood cortisol, lactate or glucose concentrations 10 min after the treatment. The effect of cold shock, however, was evident in the delayed start of recovery in cortisol and glucose concentrations. All the stress indicators used decreased to the levels for undisturbed fish within 24 h, except in the case of glucose after the combined stressors.  相似文献

Behaviour of juvenile mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus were investigated under laboratory conditions to determine the efficacy of estimating predation mortality using tethering. The occurrence and duration of stressed behaviour was evaluated for individual A. japonicus that were hooked but untethered, hooked and tethered and unhooked and untethered (free swimming), both in schools and in isolation. Tethered and hooked treatments showed a significantly higher incidence and duration of stressed behaviour over controls, but stressed behaviour was lower for hooked but untethered fish in the presence of a school. Artifacts associated with elevated stress may reduce the reliability of estimates of relative predation derived from tethering data for schooling fishes.  相似文献

The mortality and stress responses (plasma cortisol concentration) of undersized (total length, L T, <370 mm) pike-perch Sander lucioperca caught as by-catch in a trawl fishery were assessed. The effects of three different holding methods on pike-perch caught by trawl were compared: (1) fish that were transferred to ambient-temperature water (15·0–21·4° C) immediately after capture and not exposed to chilling water, (2) fish held in chilling water for 10 min and (3) fish exposed to chilling water for 2 h. The sample fish were held and monitored in individual plastic restrainers at ambient-water temperature for 48 h after each of the handling procedures. Total mortality was similar for fish held in chilling tanks for 10 min (27·2% total mortality) compared to fish that were only held in ambient-temperature water (28·2% mortality). Total mortality reached 91·3% when fish were held in chilled water for 2 h. Mortality and plasma cortisol concentrations correlated inversely with size (96–368 mm L T) and directly with lake-water temperature (15·0–21·4° C) after treatment. In addition, the effect of chilling was observed in elevated cortisol concentration and delayed start of recovery. The results show that quickly removing (<10 min) undersized pike-perch from chilled water could markedly improve the survival of released fish. Due to delayed recovery, however, fish should be allowed to recover (30–40 min) in a deck tank before release.  相似文献

This study focused on the acute physiological responses to saltwater exposure in juvenile shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum. In two separate laboratory experiments, 2 year‐old A. brevirostrum were exposed to either full (32) or half‐strength (16) seawater for up to 24 h. First, oxygen consumption rates were used to estimate the metabolic costs over 24 h. Secondly, blood and muscle samples were analysed at 6, 12 and 24 h for water loss, various measures of osmoregulatory status (plasma osmolality and ions) and other standard haematological variables. Juveniles exposed to full‐strength seawater showed significant decreases in oxygen consumption rates during the 24 h exposure. Furthermore, seawater‐exposed fish had significantly increased plasma osmolality, ions (Na+ and Cl?) and a 17% decrease in total wet mass over the 24 h exposure period. To a lesser extent, increases in osmolality, ions and mass loss were observed in fish exposed to half‐strength seawater but no changes to oxygen consumption. Cortisol was also significantly increased in fish exposed to full‐strength seawater. While plasma protein was elevated following 24 h in full‐strength seawater, haemoglobin, haematocrit and plasma glucose levels did not change with increased salinity. These results imply an inability of juvenile A. brevirostrum to regulate water and ions in full‐strength seawater within 24 h. Nonetheless, no mortality occurred in any exposure, suggesting that juvenile A. brevirostrum can tolerate short periods in saline environments.  相似文献

Laboratory apparatus which simulated capture of fish in the cod-end of a towed trawl was used to induce post-capture stress as measured by alterations in behavioural, physiological and mortality indices in juvenile walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma and juvenile and adult sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria. Differences in resistance to net entrainment varied between species with the severity of stress and the potential for recovery depending on light intensity, net velocity and towing duration. At a light intensity which simulated daylight at depth in clear ocean water (0.5 μmol photons m?2 s?1), walleye pollock juveniles were able to maintain swimming in nets towed at 0.65 m s?1 for 3h with no discernible effects on behaviour or mortality. However, when net velocity was increased to >0.75m s?1 or light intensity was decreased to <0.002 μmol photons m?2 s?1, fish became entrained in the meshes of the net and exhibited significant alterations in feeding behaviour, predator evasion and increases in plasma cortisol concentrations. Marked increases in stress-induced mortality also occurred, in some cases after a delay of 6 days and eventually reaching 100%. In comparison with walleye pollock, sablefish juveniles became entrained in the meshes of the net at higher velocities (>0.92m s?1) or lower light intensities (<0.0004 μmol photons m?2 s?1) and were much more resistant to post-capture stress. Towing of net-entrained fish for 15 min caused no detectable changes in feeding and cortisol and for 2 h, no changes in feeding although mortality increased from 0% for 15-min tows to 19% for 2-h tows. Towing for 4 h caused significant alterations in feeding and cortisol with feeding recovering to control levels by 6 days and cortisol by 3 days; mortality was 25%. When adult sablefish were towed for 4 h followed by 15-min exposure to air, feeding was inhibited 6 days after towing, but recovered within 30 days with no mortality observed after 30 days. The results demonstrate the value of using laboratory-based behavioural and biochemical indices to identify factors that may potentially affect post-capture survival among different species of fish.  相似文献

The effect of time of stocking on the extent and source of mortality in 0+ year pike Esox lucius was investigated in a lake (20 ha) and a drainable pond (0·5 ha) using pike with alizarin marked otoliths. The results indicated that pike stocked late relative to the recruitment of native 0+ year pike fell victim to cannibalism from these larger individuals. This resulted in very low survival through the first growing season (<2%). Pike stocked early in the season exhibited significantly higher survival (>12%). Analyses of the size distribution of the alizarin marks from these fish revealed that the largest 0+ year pike exhibited by a factor of 3·3, higher survival than the average 0+ year pike in the lake. In order for large 0+ year pike to exhibit such high relative fitness a minimum of 69·7% of the original population must suffer size dependent mortality. In the pond the survival of the largest pike was by a factor of 4·2 higher than the average pike, and the corresponding size dependent mortality was 76·4%. The substantial size‐dependent mortality was most probably due to intra‐cohort cannibalism or habitat segregation between large and small 0+ year pike that exposes the small pike to predatory fishes in the open lake. Cannibalism exerts a major influence on the survival of 0+ year pike post‐stocking although the magnitude and origin differ in relation to stocking time.  相似文献

1. We report patterns of temporal variation in the recruitment of roach ( Rutilus rutilus ). The data consist of the annual abundance of the first 2 year-classes, 0+ and 1+ fish, at four sites in the Rhône River (France) between 1987 and 1997. Over this 11-year period both 0+ and 1+ fish fluctuated strongly.
2. Cross-correlation indicated high spatial synchrony in 0+ dynamics, although correlations among sites in 1+ dynamics were weaker. No clear pattern was apparent in the relationship between the level of synchrony and distance between pairs of sites.
3. The spatial synchrony in 0+ fish could be attributable to large-scale variations in weather, influencing water temperature. Total body length of 0+ roach was correlated with water temperature (expressed in degree-days over 12 °C), and water temperature was the main factor explaining inter-annual variation in 0+ cohort size. Monthly variation in abiotic factors (measured by standard deviation in water temperature and discharge) did not influence 0+ fluctuations. Correlations with June water temperature suggest that year-class strength was mainly determined by abiotic factors during the first few months of life.
4. The absence of spatial synchrony in 1+ fluctuations suggests little correlation between survival and abiotic conditions during the first year of life, other factors influencing survival.
5. Survival in the first year was density-dependent. Intraspecific competition within the 0+ cohort could thus influence the fluctuations in recruitment to older age-classes.
6. The implications of age- or stage-dependent synchrony in temporal variation for species with complex life histories are discussed. Studying spatial synchrony for the different life history stages could enhance our understanding of the population dynamics of spatially structured species.  相似文献

Cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR) and stroke volume (SV) were monitored in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss electroshocked (pulsed DC) with various voltage, frequency, pulse width and shock duration settings. Additionally, behavioural recovery times and internal haemorrhaging were examined. During electroshock, heart function became erratic and typically ceased for much of the event (cardiac arrest). Following electroshock, CO increased almost entirely due to an increase in SV. Cardiac function generally returned to resting levels within 2–3 h. Behaviourally, recovery was much more rapid, typically taking only a few minutes for fish to regain equilibrium and to begin swimming normally, and only rarely was >1 h. Internal injury ranged from 0 to 7 cm2 of haemorrhaging along the spine and surrounding musculature, although only 4% of the fish had corresponding damage to the vertebrae. Comparisons across the various electrofisher settings indicate that response and injury are highly variable, but generally increased with more intense settings. Higher frequencies and voltages appear to most negatively affect behavioural recovery and injury while longer shock durations increased the length of cardiac arrest and the duration of cardiac recovery. Because of the variability in results and small sample sizes, however, the strongest conclusion that can be drawn from this work is that electrofishing, regardless of the settings, has a considerable negative impact on rainbow trout that is often not apparent externally. Additionally, this study has shown how electrofishing directly effects fish physiologically through impairment of cardiac function. Studies examining the physiological and behavioural response of fishes and subsequent recovery will be necessary for the development of electrofishing guidelines which minimize the disturbance to fishes.  相似文献

To date, most studies of commercial fisheries bycatch have focused on mortality at time of capture as an endpoint. However, sub-lethal indicators of organismal condition have the potential to reveal mechanisms associated with mortality (both at time of capture and post-release) and opportunities for improving fish welfare. In this study, we simulated commercial fishing efforts in inland lakes with fyke nets during a typical fishing season (early April to late June) in southeastern Ontario, Canada, where bycatch of non-target fish species had previously been documented. Using non-target gamefish (i.e., largemouth bass [Micropterus salmoides, Lacépède], northern pike [Esox Lucius, L.]), as well as a target species (i.e., bluegill [Lepomis macrochirus, Rafinesque]), we examined the sub-lethal consequences of capture (e.g., blood physiology, reflex impairment, and injury) and compared the effects of being retained in the net for two different durations (i.e., two or six days) over a range of water temperatures (i.e., 3–28 °C). Sub-lethal physiological disturbances (i.e., blood glucose and lactate) in largemouth bass and bluegill tended to be greater at higher water temperatures. However, fish retained for six days generally did not exhibit greater stress than those retained for two days, with the exception of plasma glucose in largemouth bass. Reflex impairment was similar among temperature and retention periods. Fish retained in nets experienced a range of injuries (including fin frays, scale loss, and mouth damage) that had the potential to facilitate the development of opportunistic pathogenic infections. Greater incidences of injury on fish bycatch tended to be associated with higher temperatures and longer retention. To reduce physiological disturbances and injury that could lead to delayed mortality, we suggest that regulations for inland commercial fishers require them to check their nets more frequently as water temperatures increase. We suggest that future studies of bycatch incorporate sub-lethal endpoints given that they serve as an objective measure of fish welfare and can provide quantitative mechanistic information to support management actions.  相似文献

Exploitation of fisheries resources has unintended consequences, not only in the bycatch and discard of non-target organisms, but also in damage to targeted fish that are injured by gear but not landed (non-retention). Delayed mortality due to non-retention represents lost reproductive potential in exploited stocks, while not contributing to harvest. Our study examined the physiological mechanisms by which delayed mortality occurs and the extent to which injuries related to disentanglement from commercial gear compromise reproductive success in spawning stocks of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). We found evidence for elevated stress in fish injured via non-retention in gillnet fisheries. Plasma cortisol levels correlated with the severity of disentanglement injury and were elevated in fish that developed infections related to disentanglement injuries. We also analyzed sex steroid concentrations in females (estradiol-17β and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one) to determine whether non-retention impairs reproductive potential in escaped individuals. We demonstrate evidence for delayed or inhibited maturation in fish with disentanglement injuries. These findings have important implications for effective conservation and management of exploited fish stocks and suggest means to improve spawning success in such stocks if retention in commercial fisheries is improved and incidental mortality reduced.  相似文献

The cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi (Schultz), is the most important ornamental fish exported from Brazil and Colombia. During the transport of this species, Amazon fishermen usually add unmeasured amounts of tetracycline and/or table salt to the water in an effort to mitigate stress and mortality. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of salt, the antibiotic tetracycline and the ammonia chelating agent Amquel® in the transport of this species. Cardinal tetras were submitted to a 24‐h boat transport in water containing either tetracycline hydrochloride (2.5 mg L?1), Amquel® (26.41 mg L?1), tetracycline + table salt (2.5 mg L?1 + 66.67 mg L?1), or additive‐free water (control treatment). Whole‐body cortisol measurements showed that fish transported with any water additive had lower cortisol levels compared to control. However, based on ionoregulatory and water quality parameters, the addition of tetracycline, Amquel® or the combination tetracycline + salt to the water of transport of cardinal tetras is not recommended when compared to control. Although Amquel® helped stabilize the pH and diminish total ammonia levels in the transport water, this compound dramatically increased net Na+ and Cl? uptake, and therefore compromised cardinal tetra ionoregulation.  相似文献

1995年10月至1996年11月运用标志回捕法对保安湖1#试验围拦中麦穗鱼的种群数量作了11次估算,并对种群的动态特征进行了分析。 周年的种群数量变动于0.40-2.45ind·m-2,在5月份最高。不同世代的强度存在较大的差异,1996年世代最强,1996年11月为21,631ind,与同期的1995世代(14,431ind)相比增加了49.9%,死亡率在夏季较高。1995世代周年死亡率为71.7%,1996年11月的数量为4,084ind,与生活史中同期的1994世代(1,515ind)相比,增加了1.7倍。1994世代在1996年繁殖后期的死亡率急剧增加,在产卵季节过后全部死亡。种群活动水平除了与水温有关外,在春季可能主要受繁殖活动的影响。1996年的种群繁殖力为4.05×106粒,其中0+龄的贡献为85.7%.    相似文献

Surveys at 23 Black-throated Diver breeding lakes in Scotland showed large between-lake differences in the species and size range of potential prey. The study lakes were classified into four types according to the main size-taxa prey classes present. Type 1 lakes lacked small fish, Type 4 lacked salmonids < 300 mm and Types 2 and 3 both had all four of the main prey classes. Diver diet for 30 families at the study lakes was quantified from 7943 prey items seen fed to chicks, and 153 items seen eaten by adults, during 662 h of observations. At all lake types adults mostly ate salmonids of 120–240 mm in length, especially Brown Trout Salmo trutta , and European Eels Anguilla anguilla up to c.  350 mm. The prey eaten by chicks ranged widely, from c.  0.03 g to 300 g, with important implications for feeding behaviour. Young chicks (days 1–8) rejected items greater than 70 mm long. The diet of young chicks consisted mostly of small fish, either Three-spined Sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus (Type 2 lakes) or Minnow Phoxinus phoxinus (Type 3 and Type 4 lakes). At other lakes (Type 1) it consisted mostly of mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera); invertebrates were the only abundant potential small prey in these lakes. At all lakes the chick diet became more similar to that of adults as chicks grew. Adults provisioning chicks used two foraging strategies. In 'excursion foraging', adults hunted away from the chicks and carried prey back for them; in 'attendance foraging', the chicks accompanied the foraging adult(s). Excursion foraging was used mostly before day 4 and was strongly and positively correlated with the abundance of fish < 80 mm in length. This behaviour is probably adaptive, but is probably tenable only where small fish are relatively abundant. Young chicks fed mainly on small fish had higher survival rates than those fed on invertebrates.  相似文献

In this study we measured plasma cortisol, plasma glucose, plasma sodium and potassium, and liver and gill hsp70 levels in juvenile matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) subjected to a 96 h exposure to phenol (0, 0.2, and 2.0 ppm), and the effect of this exposure on their ability to respond to a subsequent handling stress. Fish were sampled prior to initiation of exposure and 96 h, and at 1, 6, 12, and 24 h post-handling stress. During the 96 h exposure, plasma cortisol and glucose levels remained unchanged in all treatments. While plasma sodium levels were significantly reduced in all groups, plasma potassium levels only decreased in fish exposed to 0 and 0.2 ppm of phenol. Liver hsp70 levels decreased significantly at 96 h in fish exposed to 2.0 ppm of phenol. All groups, except fish exposed to 0.2 ppm of phenol, were able to increase plasma cortisol and glucose levels after handling stress. Fish exposed to 2.0 ppm of phenol showed decreased gill and liver hsp70 levels after the handling stress. Our data suggest that exposure to phenol may compromise the ability of matrinxã to elicit physiological responses to a subsequent stressor.  相似文献

The effect of elevated temperature on the antioxidants in the freshwater fish Channa punctata was investigated. Fish stressed with an elevated temperature of 12° C, range ± 1° C over the ambient temperature for 3 h showed a significant ( P  < 0·05–0·01) reduction in the levels of antioxidants: reduced glutathione (GSH) and non‐protein thiols. Activity of glutathione reductase was also reduced in all the tissues (liver, kidney and gills) after 3 h of heat stress and 24 h recovery. Catalase (CAT) showed enhanced activity in liver in both the conditions while gills and kidney showed a decreased CAT activity. Glutathione S‐transferase (GST) activity in kidney and liver decreased significantly ( P  < 0·05–0·01) after 3 h of heat stress. At 24 h GST activity showed a tendency to normalize in all the tissues along with a concomitant increase in the GSH level in the kidney. Total and protein thiols in heat stressed fish when matched with controls, showed significant ( P  < 0·05) reduction in the kidney only with a transient increase in liver and gills. Heat shock also induced lipid peroxidation in 3 h heat‐treated and recovery groups when compared with controls. Elevated temperature therefore resulted in tissue specific and time‐dependent alterations of antioxidants in the fish. It also induced lipid peroxidation in various tissues.  相似文献

A large size variation amongst life histories for stream-dwelling Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was found and the relative effect of life histories on size varied over time. As early as December (age 0+ years), fish that later smolted at age 2+ years were significantly larger than fish that did not smolt at age 2+ years. In contrast, there were no mass differences at age 0+ years between fish that would mature or not at age 1+ years (October). The mass differences between smolts and non-smolts persisted until smolting, and differences between mature and immature fish first appeared in May (age 1+ years). Following September (age 1+ years), there was also a significant interaction between smolting and maturity. Previously mature and immature age 2+ year smolts were not significantly different in size, but immature age 2+ year non-smolts were much lighter than mature age 2+ year non-smolts. Based on mass differences, the apparent 'decision' to smolt occurred c . 5 months before (winter, age 0+ years) the decision to mature (late spring, age 1+ years). In addition to strong seasonal growth variation, sizes of freshwater Atlantic salmon were largely structured by the complex interaction between smolt-age and maturity.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of high‐dose vitamin C supplementation on growth, tissue ascorbic acid concentrations and physiological response to transportation stress in juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus (initial average weight 6.2 ± 0.2 g). Three practical diets were formulated to contain 100 (control), 450 and 800 mg ascorbic acid/kg diet, respectively, supplied as l‐ascorbyl‐2‐polyphosphate. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish in circular tanks (3 m ø, 1.5 m depth) (60 fish/tank) for 9 weeks. Growth did not change significantly with dietary vitamin C levels, although an improvement tendency with an increase in vitamin C supplementation was observed. Ascorbic acid concentrations in the liver and muscle of fish fed diets containing graded levels of vitamin C were positively correlated with dietary levels of this vitamin. Tissue ascorbic acid concentrations significantly increased with increasing vitamin C supplementation. After 9 weeks, the fish were subjected to transportation stress for 4 h to determine the influence of high vitamin C supplementation on the physiological response to this stressor. Serum cortisol, glucose and lactate levels significantly increased in stressed fish. Serum cortisol and glucose concentrations after stress were significantly higher in fish fed the control diet (7.91 μg L?1 and 0.80 mm , respectively) than in the other groups. However, there were no significant differences in serum cortisol and glucose levels after stress between the 450 and 800 mg kg?1 diets. No significant change could be found in serum lactate levels after stress among the different treatments. In conclusion, the dietary administration of high doses of vitamin C could reduce stress in silver pomfret and increase the survival of fish under stress conditions.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Transgenic crops have shown great promise for the control of target pest insects, but in some cases they can also influence non-target species. This study investigated the impact of Bt and Bt+CpTI transgenic cottons on the non-target cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, by comparing life-table parameters, feeding behaviour, and the fluctuating asymmetry of morphological traits of aphids reared on transgenic cotton and those on untransformed control plants.
2. Aphids on the Bt+CpTI cotton showed a shorter reproductive duration and maximum lifespan, lower survival rates and potential maximum fecundity, and an earlier occurrence of peak daily mortality in the first or second generation. However, the aphid population soon developed fitness and overcame the negative effect in the second or third generation. The aphids on the Bt cotton had significantly longer reproductive durations in the first generation, higher survival rates in the third generation, and apparently larger potential maximum fecundity in all three generations.
3. The percentages of accumulated duration of feeding waveforms E1 and E2 were significantly lower in aphids on the Bt+CpTI cotton than in those on the Bt or control cotton, whereas the frequencies of moving and finding feeding sites, and probe behaviour were significantly higher.
4. Fluctuating asymmetry in three morphological characters of aphids reared on transgenic and control cotton was detected. The fluctuating asymmetry value of the third segment of antenna in aphids on Bt+CpTI cotton was significantly higher than that of aphids on Bt or control cotton. Based on the fluctuating asymmetry value, the stress of cotton on the aphids could be ranked as Bt+CpTI cotton > Bt cotton > control cotton.  相似文献

Strong piscivory by eels Anguilla anguilla , which were regularly stocked in the Bautzen Reservoir, Germany, as a biomanipulation tool, was observed, with the number of fishes per stomach containing fish being 2· 2 ± 1·3 (mean ±  s . d .). The 0+ year perch Perca fluviatilis was the most frequent prey item (54%), and 0+ year pikeperch Sander lucioperca was the most important prey in terms of biomass (45%).  相似文献
