Endocrine data and characteristics of nonconceptive ovarian cycling and pregnancy are limited within the genus Callithrix to the common marmoset (C. jacchus) and Wied's black tufted‐ear marmoset (C. kuhlii). This article presents patterns of urinary pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) excretion, as determined by enzyme immunoassay, throughout the course of ovarian cycling and pregnancy in white‐faced marmosets (C. geoffroyi). Furthermore, characteristics of reproductive parameters including litter size, duration of gestation, maternal age, and information about ovarian cycling following administration of contraceptives are also described. A steep increase in PdG, an indication of ovulation, characterizes normative ovarian cycles, with peak‐to‐peak intervals between cycles being 27.82 ± 1.49 days in length. PdG excretion (μg/mg Cr) across pregnancy peaked during the 1st and 2nd trimesters (1st = 20.71 ± 2.98, 2nd = 21.16 ± 2.60) and declined gradually to near preconception levels over the 3rd trimester until parturition (3rd = 5.74 ± 1.60). Gestation lasted 148.55 ± 1.89 days. Most pregnancies (82.8%) resulted in an immediate postpartum ovulation (PPO) of 17.45 ± 2.22 days with 58.3% of PPOs resulting in conception. No differences in PdG excretion during the 1st trimester between full pregnancies and miscarriages were found, and pregnancy characteristics such as litter size, duration of gestation, and maternal age were not associated with PdG concentrations. Administration of cloprostenol resulted in shorter peak‐to‐peak cycle durations, but ovulation was detectable with similar concentrations of peak PdG to a normal nonconceptive cycle. Conversely, medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections resulted in little to no PdG excretion across the ovarian cycle. Both methods of contraception providing effective prevention of conception. Overall, these results show that strong similarities in reproductive parameters persist within the genus Callithrix and to a lesser extent across the Callitrichidae family. Am. J. Direct measurements of urinary immunoreactive estrone conjugates (E1C) and pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG), were applied to monitoring the ovarian cycle (n = 9) and pregnancy (3 full term pregnancies, 2 mid-term abortions) in Saguinus fuscicollis. During the ovarian cycle, urinary E1C concentrations revealed a high degree of day-to-day variability and appeared to be uninformative in reflecting cyclic ovarian function. In contrast, PdG was a reliable indicator of ovarian cyclicity with excretion patterns corresponding well with plasma progesterone profiles. Luteal phase PdG concentrations were on average 4–7–fold higher than corresponding follicular phase values. On the basis of changes in circulating progesterone, a mean cycle length of 25.7 ±1.0 days with an average follicular phase of 7.1 ± 0.6 days and a mean luteal phase of 18.6 ± 0.7 days, was found (n = 14 cycles). Following conception, both urinary steroid conjugate concentrations increased and elevated levels were maintained beyond the normal luteal phase length, allowing pregnancy to be determined at around day 25–30. During mid- to late pregnancy, PdG levels declined while E1C concentrations continued to be elevated until approximately 6 weeks before parturition when a decrease occurred. Both hormones showed a clear and rapid fall to follicular phase values following termination of pregnancy at either parturition or mid-term abortion. Post partum ovulations (n = 5) occurred on average 17–18 days following birth with four ovulations leading to conceptions. The results demonstrate the potential of urinary steroid conjugate analysis as a practical and reliable method for non-invasive monitoring of reproductive status in the female saddle-back tamarin. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Urine samples were taken daily during 22 menstrual cycles of six normal adult female gorillas. Urine was analyzed for total immunoreactive estrogens (Et) and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG) and indexed by creatinine (Cr). An average cycle length of 32 ± 1 days (mean ± SE) with a range of 25–42 days is reported. Estrogen values range from 4 to 128 ng/mg Cr and show a midcycle peak and a midluteal rise. PdG values range from 0.01 to 2.4 μg/mg Cr and display a low, flat follicular phase followed by a luteal elevation. The follicular phase is 19.5 ± 1 days in length (range 11–30 days) and accounts for the variation in cycle length. The luteal phase is 12.3 ± 0.3 days long (range 10–14 days). In contrast to previous studies, PdG levels rise two days before the estrogen peak. The results from the present study are compared with information available on the gorilla, chimpanzee, and human. The accuracy of various alignment methods is discussed, as well as the importance of the methods presented in this study for the captive propagation of gorillas.  相似文献

Pregnanediol-3α-glucuronide (PdG) was measured in the urine of six Goeldi's monkeys during pregnancy and the postpartum period. A stress-free, non-invasive urine sampling technique permitted frequent collection of urine from members of the breeding group. A comparison of the periovulatory profiles of PdG and estrone conjugates revealed close agreement. The day of ovulation was defined as that immediately preceding a 2-4 day period with two consecutive urine samples for which the PdG content was in excess of 0.20 μg/mg Cr and 0.40 μg/mg Cr, respectively. In urine samples collected from parturition to the next ovulation, 70.9% of the PdG-values were below 0.20 μg/mg Cr, whereas 99.2% of the urinary PdG concentrations measured during pregnancy were greater than this “threshold concentration”. A conception cycle was therefore defined as one in which the concentration of urinary PdG remained above 0.20 μg/mg Cr in all urine samples collected between day 1 and day 20 after ovulation. Gestation length was 151.5 ± 1.6 days (mean ± SEM, n = 6; range 147-157 days). The postpartum ovulation occurred 22.6 ± 4.7 days (mean ± SEM, n = 9; range 11-53 days) following birth. With the exception of two non-conception postpartum cycles observed in one female, with inter-ovulatory intervals of 26 and 27 days, postpartum ovulation resulted in conception, giving a 77.8% conception rate for nine observed cycles. The simple and rapid radioimmunoassay used in this study requires 5 h from urine collection to the final result, hence permitting daily monitoring of a large sample of females. It thus has important potential for conservation breeding programs and for other scientific investigations carried out with this endangered primate species. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study examines the use levonorgestrel (Norplant®‐2) as a means of contracepting white‐faced sakis (Pithecia pithecia). A 70‐mg silastic tubule of levonorgestrel was implanted subdermally between the scapulae in four multiparous and two nulliparous females. Implants remained in the females housed with males of proven fertility for 81 to 734 days. All females experienced low, acyclic levels of estrone conjugates (E1C, < 500 ng/mg Cr) and pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG, < 1.5 μg/mg Cr) after insertion of the implant. In five females having nine contraceptive bouts, ovulation was completely blocked for the entire duration of Norplant insertion (range: 81–734 days) as evidenced by a lack of cyclic changes in excretory hormone levels. However, one female was observed to have cyclic ovarian hormonal levels 5.8 months after Norplant insertion. Thus, levonorgestrel can be an effective method for blocking cyclic ovarian hormonal changes for 1 year (n = 2) and possibly as long as 2 years (n = 3). The objective of this study was to determine if sexual swellings in mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) are a reflection of reproductive endocrine state. Urine samples were assayed using an enzyme immunoassay measuring pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) and estrone conjugates (E1C). Hormone patterns of ovarian cycles, pregnancy and lactation were characterized and compared with sexual swellings and copulations relative to menses and peak E1C. Cycle lengths averaging 28.7 days and pregnancy length of 181 days determined by hormonal and sexual swelling measures were similar to those reported in other Old World primate species. First day of copulation was observed during rising E1C concentrations and preceded observations of peak swelling by 1–2 days. Observations of peak sexual swellings occurred at or on the day after peak E1C and decreased following the ovulatory increase in PdG. Observations of menses and sexual swellings are a useful method to track mandrill ovarian cycles and can assist zoos in determining the reproductive state of females in their collections. An enzyme immunoassay for urinary pregnanediol-3 alpha-glucuronide (PdG) was evaluated for the indirect measurement of progesterone metabolites during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy of uncaptured North American bison. Comparisons between plasma progesterone and urinary PdG, dose-response parallelism between the standard curve and diluted urine samples and high-performance liquid cochromatography revealed that PdG was a primary immunoreactive urinary metabolite of progesterone in bison. Urine samples were collected directly from the soil from 29 bison cows during the August rutting season and analysed for PdG. Eight bison cows demonstrated complete oestrous cycles ranging from 19 to 26 days (mean cycle length = 23.12 +/- 0.76 days) and behavioural oestrus among four of these cows correlated with PdG nadirs. Mean PdG nadirs were 63.62 +/- 21.61 ng/mg urinary creatinine (Cr) and mean peak midluteal values were 546.01 +/- 130.73 ng/mg Cr. Seven of eight became pregnant, indicating that bison exhibit a second seasonal oestrus. Eighteen other bison cows were pregnant prior to the beginning of the study and demonstrated non-cyclic increased PdG concentrations (greater than 200 ng/mg Cr) during the 30-day course of collection. Three cows ovulated and became pregnant during the 30-day collection period and then exhibited increasing urinary PdG concentrations. This report demonstrates that ovarian function in uncaptured bison can be monitored by means of urinary PdG and that both ovulatory cycles and early pregnancy can be detected.  相似文献

Cotton‐top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) are a critically endangered species that have been bred successfully in captivity for many years. For two decades, the Cotton‐top Tamarin SSP© has been challenged with a high rate of reproduction combined with a history of contraceptive failures and nonrecommended births using the current Depo Provera® (medroxyprogesterone acetate) injection followed by MGA (melengestrol acetate) implant contraception combination. To address these issues we have developed and tested the use of levonorgestrel (LNG) as an effective contraception option for cotton‐top tamarins. LNG was delivered in an injectable, gel matrix consisting of polylactic‐co‐glycolic acid, triethyl citrate and N‐methylpyrrolidone. This gel matrix forms a biodegradable depot at the subcutaneous injection site providing slow release of the active ingredient. Gel matrix composition and LNG concentration were adjusted in four gel formulations to maximize the duration of contraceptive efficacy while minimizing immediate post‐injection increases in fecal LNG concentration. LNG treatment (68.44±8.61 mg/kg) successfully eliminated ovarian cycles (fecal pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) and estrone conjugates (E1C)) for 198.8±70.3 days (formulation four; range 19–50 weeks). It was demonstrated that subcutaneous LNG depot injection was an effective, reversible contraceptive option for the management of cotton‐top tamarins in captivity. Ovarian activity in the female giraffe was evaluated during the nonfertile ovarian cycle and during the terminal stages of gestation. Progesterone metabolites, in the form of pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG), were measured in daily random urine samples collected from four adult parous giraffes. The follicular phase averaged 4.0 ± 0.1 days in length (N = 12; range 3–5 days) and peak PdG levels in the postovulatory period averaged 30.9 ± 1.7 ng/mg Cr (N = 12). PdG levels during the latter half of gestation greatly exceeded average luteal phase levels, which is in contrast to domestic ruminants. Prior to parturition, a marked decline in PdG excretion was evident, which may be useful for anticipating this event. These data serve to elucidate ovarian function in the mature female giraffe and to provide information concerning the physiologic role of certain anomalous ovarian structures. In addition, observed similarities in the pattern of PdG excretion during the nonfertile cycles of the giraffe and the okapi indicate similar underlying physiologic processes.  相似文献

Glucose metabolism is altered after trauma and those factors that affect glucose metabolism often affect chromium (Cr) metabolism and excretion. To ascertain whether urinary Cr excretion is affected by the elevated serum glucose and other factors associated with trauma, the serum glucose and urinary Cr and Creatinine (Cre) excretion of seven severely traumatized patients were determined. The Cr concentration of intravenous (IV) fluids administered was determined and approximate Cr intake calculated. For all patients, urinary Cr concentration was high in the initial sample collected within 24 h of admission (10.3 ± 2.5 ng/mL, mean ± SEM) and decreased significantly (P < 0.05) by 42 h (2.0 ±0.6 ng/mL). The mean urinary Cr concentration 42 h following admission was 10 times greater than the urinary Cr concentration of normal, healthy subjects (0.2 ± 0.02 ng/mL). There was no significant change in urinary Cre concentration within 42 h of admission, therefore the ratio of urinary Cr to Cre (ng Cr:mg Cre) also decreased. Serum glucose concentration was elevated at admission (170 ± 18 mg/dL, mean ± SD) and decreased to 145 ± 10 mg/dL by 48 h post-admission. The intravenous fluids, dextrose and NaCl, were the lowest in Cr of the samples tested, range 0.02 to 0.20 ng/mL; lactated Ringer’s solution, with or without dextrose, contained 10-20 times more Cr and plasma protein fraction contained approximately 32 ng/mL. The mean calculated Cr intake for the first 24 h postadmission was 37.1 µg/d, significantly greater (P < 0.01) than intake from 24 to 48 h (0.12 µg/d) and 48-72 h (1.63 µg/d). The IV intake of Cr varied for trauma patients depending on fluids required during treatment, but for all patients the relatively high IV Cr intake was rapidly excreted in the urine. These data demonstrate that urinary Cr concentration is elevated several-fold within 24 h of trauma and that Cr contents of intravenous fluids administered in the days immediately following injury vary dramatically. The effects of trauma alone on Cr excretion are difficult to assess because of the variable intake of Cr from IV fluids.  相似文献

Cycle and gestation lengths, menstruation patterns, female genital swelling characteristics, and male-female consortship durations are reported in a semifree-ranging group of Tonkean macaques (Macaca tonkeana) studied over a 12 year period. In addition, profiles of urinary estrone conjugates (E1C) and immunoreactive pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) throughout four complete menstrual cycles in two females and three full-term pregnancies are presented. Based on intermenstrual intervals, a mean cycle length of 37–41 days (n = 55 cycles in 10 females) was found. Gestation length averaged 173 days (n = 27 pregnancies in eight females). Measurement of PdG immunoreactivity in urine revealed a cyclic pattern with a 5–15-fold increase between follicular and luteal phase concentrations, suggesting that PdG is a reliable indicator of ovarian cyclicity and luteal function. In contrast to PdG, E1C excretion showed no clear pattern throughout the cycle; however, highest values of E1C were usually found shortly before the onset of the luteal phase PdG rise at the presumed time of ovulation. Levels of both hormones were elevated during the first half of gestation and showed a marked increase throughout the second half, with maximum E1C concentrations being up to 100-fold higher than nonpregnant levels. Consortships by the male and occurrence of female genital swelling were long lasting (on average 5–10 days and 13 days, respectively) and were restricted to the follicular phase of the cycle. The day of maximal swelling and day of detumescence as well as the end of male consortship were closely associated with the periovulatory period. Swellings and consortships were longer following lactational ammenorhea than for subsequent cycles. The evolutionary significance of the cyclical changes undergone by females upon their relations with males is discussed. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Estradiol-17β (E2) induces atresia of the dominant preovulatory follicle (DF) when administered on day 6 of the menstrual cycle. The present study was designed to determine whether the atretogenic effect of E2 could be averted by the administration of exogenous gonadotropins, in an attempt to determine whether E2-induced atresia in primates is due to a direct action at the ovarian level or is mediated via pituitary secretion. After identification of the DF during laparoscopy, cyclic monkeys received Silastic capsules containing E2 placed s.c. for 24 hours, plus one of the following treatments: phosphate-buffered saline, or 25 I.U. of either human urinary menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), FSH-rich hMG, human urinary FSH (uFSH), or human pituitary FSH (pFSH) injected i.m. twice daily for 2 days. The control treatment resulted in atresia of the DF and extended follicular phases (26.3 ± 5.9 days, x? ± S.D.), but in normal luteal phases following ovulation of a substitute DF. Similar results occurred in all animals receiving FSH-rich hMG or pFSH, and in 11 of 16 animals receiving hMG or uFSH (P > 0.05). Since all possible routes and regimens of gonadotropin administration were not attempted, a central action of E2 cannot be ruled out. However, we believe that the experimental observations support our contention that the atretogenic action of E2 is exerted in part at the ovary.  相似文献

Estrone-conjugates (E1C) were measured in the feces of six female pygmy lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus) during estrus (n = 12), pregnancy (n = 4) and the postpartum period (n = 3). Noninvasive feces collection permitted frequent sampling throughout estrus and pregnancy, without disturbance of animals. The estrous period was defined as an increase in fecal E1C levels above an average of 70 ng/g feces with peaks above 100 ng/g feces obtained in consecutive fecal samples collected over a 6- to 11-day period between the end of July and the first third of October. Comparison of the periovulatory profile of E1C and the stage of labial opening of the vagina revealed a high agreement (P < 0.001). In all pregnant females, an E1C rise was found approximately 47 days postestrus, the source of which may be the growing fetal placental unit. To determine the effects of a human oral contraceptive on normal and abnormal reproductive endocrine patterns in two lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), daily urine samples were analyzed by radioimmunoassay for estrone conjugates (EC) and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG). During a pre-treatment period one female (F1) demonstrated regular menstrual cycles averaging 27.6 ± 1.8 days, whereas ovarian cyclicity in female 2 (F2) was consistently prolonged, ranging from 37–51 days. A 56 day regimen of an oral contraceptive (Demulen 50®) was administered to both females beginning in the late luteal phase, and within 6 and 7 days of treatment onset (F1 and F2, respectively) urinary EC and PdG declined to and remained at concentrations consistent with amenorrhea throughout the administration period. Ten and twenty days after contraceptive withdrawal (F1 and F2, respectively) an EC peak was observed with subsequent PdG elevations 1–2 days later. Mean cycle length and luteal phase durations were not different (P > 0.05) before or after treatment for either female, while combined peak PdG concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) for the first 3 months after treatment compared to pre-treatment values. These results indicate that a human oral contraceptive rapidly suppresses ovarian activity in female lowland gorillas, but that the abnormal endocrine pattern observed in F2 could not be redirected into a normal profile after contraceptive withdrawal. © 1992 Wiley-Liss Inc.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that estradiol-17β (E2) administered in vivo induces atresia of the dominant ovarian follicle (DF). Whether this effect is exerted directly at the ovarian level or by central mediation has not been confirmed. The present study was designed to assess whether E2 in amounts similar to those found in monkey follicular fluid (FF) directly alters in vitro progesterone (P) accumulation by granulosa cells (GC) aspirated from follicles in cycling rhesus monkeys. Follicular contents were aspirated from three to five animals on each of days 8–13 of the cycle. GC were plated at a density of 50,000 viable GC/0.5 ml medium; GC were incubated with 0 or 2–2,000 ng/ml E2, and cultures were maintained for 72 h. P accumulation by GC collected on day 8 and treated with 2 ng/ml E2 was augmented 37.5 ± 5.5% (X ± S. E. M.; P<.05) over controls but was diminished significantly at 20 ng/ml ( ?55 ± 18% with respect to controls), 200 ng/ml ( ?73.7 ± 13.2%), and 2,000 ng/ml ( ?77.3 ± 18.4%). A similar dose-response relationship was noted on other cycle days. At a concentration of 2,000 ng/ml, E2 significantly reduced P 91.5 ± 8.5% (day 10), 81.5 ± 18.5% (day 11), 84.3 ± 4.7% (day 12), and 53.7 ± 15.8% (day 13). We conclude that E2 at concentrations found in FF can inhibit P output by monkey GC through a direct action.  相似文献

The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) is one of the most endangered species in the world, and it is endemic to China. According to our knowledge, there was no information on reproduction for this species. The present study was designed to understand the characteristics of reproductive hormone secretion during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy of this species by monitoring urinary estrone conjugate (E1C), pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG), bioactive follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). The urine samples were collected each day from four adult females for eight menstrual cycles, and once in 3 days during pregnancy (three full-term pregnancies, one mid-term abortion). The steroid conjugate was tested by radioimmunoassays (RIAs), and bioactive FSH and LH levels were measured in vitro by the sensitive bioassays granulosa cell aromatize bioassay (GAB) and rat interstitial cell testosterone (RICT), respectively. The results showed that: 1) E1C presented a preovulatory peak (183.9 +/- 8.6 ng/mgCr) followed by a definite elevation of PdG; 2) PdG in the luteal phase (754.4 +/- 30.6 ng/mgCr) was three- to fivefold higher than during the corresponding follicular phase (198.3 +/- 11.4 ng/mgCr); 3) the peaks of bio-LH and bio-FSH were on the same day, while the E1C peak was 1 or 2 days before the peaks for these two hormones; 4) bio-FSH levels were higher in the follicular phase than in the luteal phase, and bio-LH levels elevated slightly in the luteal phase; 5) the mean cycle length was 23.6 +/- 3.5 days (n = 3) based upon successive urinary LH peaks; 6) based on the interval from the day of E1C peak to the day of parturition, the gestation was 203.7 +/- 2.5 days (n = 3); and 7) both E1C and PdG increased and remained high after pregnancy, with a sharp decrease in basal levels following parturition or mid-term abortion. The results suggested that the pattern of reproductive hormones for R. bieti is similar to that of other Old World monkeys, but the concentration of the hormones is different from that of other species. This species has a longer progestation period, which may be related to its classification status.  相似文献

Nonsurgical artificial insemination (AI) procedures were performed using frozen, thawed semen in two adult female addax. Pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) (300 IU) and prostaglandin (PG) (125 μg) was administered intramuscularly to female 1 on days ?3 and ?1, respectively, where day 1 was the first day of AI. Only one injection of PG was used, as a low serum progesterone (PROG) concentration (0.5 ng/ml) and a low pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) concentration (0.36 ng PdG/mg creatinine) had been recorded on day ?13. A total of 219 × 106 motile sperm was deposited in the os cervix or anterior vagina on days 1–4. High serum PROG levels (9.4–15.8 ng/ml) and high urinary PdG levels (1.35–1.63 ng PdG/mg creatinine) were observed on days 23, 31, and 39, and the fetal heart was seen beating during an ultrasound exam on day 45. A male calf was born on day 266, 8.7 mo after insemination. This is the first live birth resulting from AI of an antelope with frozen, thawed semen. The Synchro-mate-B system of estrous control was used in female 2. The implant was inserted, and the injection was given on day ?11 per the manufacturer's instructions. The implant was removed on day ?1, and a total of 220 × 106 motile sperm was deposited in the os cervix or anterior vagina on days 1 and 2. High serum PROG levels (17.5–24.5 ng/ml) were observed on days 13, 21, and 29. Although the fetal heartbeat was observed during an ultrasound examinataion on day 42, the fetus was not carried to term. A rapid and direct radioimmunoassay of urine estrone conjugate (E1C) was developed. Urine samples were taken from Large White sows by inserting sponges in the vagina which were expelled during micturition. Analysis of samples collected daily from 13 sows between 2 and 40 days after service showed that high urine E1C levels occurred between day 20 and 30 after insemination in pregnant sows; maximum concentrations were observed on day 25 (79.4 ± 11.7 ng/ml, X ± s.e.m.). In this period E1C levels never exceeded 1 ng/ml in nonpregnant sows. A single urine sample was then taken from 84 sows, 25 days after insemination, to check the accuracy of E1C estimation as a test for early pregnancy diagnosis. To investigate changes in oxidant stress during and following acute asthma exacerbations, this stidy measured 2,3-dinor-5,6-dihydro-15-F2t-IsoP (F2-IsoP-M), the major urinary metabolite of 15-F2t-IsoP, in eight asthmatic adults, during and following an asthma hospitalization. F2-IsoP-M concentrations at admission and follow-up were significantly higher than discharge (admission median: 4.12 ng/Cr mg, range 1.89–7.8; follow-up: 2.47 ng/Cr mg (1.56–6.86); discharge: 1.42 ng/Cr mg (0.7–4.44); both p<0.01), but not significantly different between admission and follow-up. F2-IsoP-M concentrations at follow-up were higher than a control group with stable asthma (0.68 ng/Cr mg (0.31–1.5), p=0.0008). In conclusion, asthma exacerbations requiring hospitalization are associated with 6-fold higher urinary F2-IsoP-M concentrations compared to stable asthmatics. F2-IsoP-M concentrations decreased significantly during hospitalization, but significant elevations 3 months following hospitalization suggest ongoing oxidative stress despite clinical improvement. Urinary F2-IsoP-M may be a clinically useful, simple non-invasive systemic measure of oxidative stress in asthmatics, providing information not captured by spirometry or symptoms.  相似文献

The phenomenon of postconception mating behavior was examined in a social group of rhesus monkeys living in an outdoor compound. Periodic blood samples and daily vaginal swabs were obtained from nine females beginning several weeks prior to conception and continuing through 6 weeks of pregnancy to permit an assessment of ovarian hormonal events associated with mating during early pregnancy. Each of the females showed a discrete period of copulatory activity during the periovulatory period which ceased within several days after the 17β-estradiol (E2) ovulatory peak. In agreement with earlier reports, only a percentage of subjects (44%) exhibited a period of postconception mating, with copulatory activity beginning 19.8 (± 1.9) days following the E2 peak and continuing for 9.5 (± 1.3 days). Implantation bleeding was detected in all of the subjects with the onset 19.5 (± 0.68) days after the E2 peak. The interval between the E2 peak and the onset of implantation bleeding was similar for all females. However, the duration of implantation bleeding was significantly shorter in females who exhibited postconception mating. The females who displayed postconception copulatory activity had significantly lower mean serum progesterone concentrations (2.33 ± 0.24 ng/ml vs. 3.64 ± 0.37 ng/ml) during the period associated with implantation bleeding and copulatory behavior. Although both groups had elevated concentrations of serum E2 during this period, levels in the females who displayed postconception mating were significantly lower (173.8 ± 19.2 pg/ml vs 223.9 ± 28.8 pg/ml). These data demonstrate that the occurrence of postconception mating behavior in this environment is associated with a distinct pattern of ovarian hormonal events, and analysis suggests that differences in steroid concentrations probably account for the observed differences in implantation bleeding and copulatory behavior during pregnancy.  相似文献
