The Zn concentration in thyroid tissue and whole blood of patients with Graves’ disease, thyroid cancer, and nodular goiter disease was determined using the total-reflection X-ray fluorescence method. The dependence of obtained concentrations on the clinical stage of the examined disease, histopathological grading, and kind of analyzed material (thyroid tissue and blood) was studied. The determined concentration of Zn was the lowest in the thyroid tissue of patients with thyroid cancer (23.1 μg/g) and it was the highest in the case of Graves’ disease (41.7 μg/g), whereas in the blood samples, the reverse results were found (7.1 μg/g and 4.8 μg/g, respectively). The physical basis of the method used, the experimental setup, and the procedure of sample preparation are described.  相似文献

Cyclotron resonance of ions has been proposed as a mechanism by which weak, extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields can act on biological systems. Critics of a mechanism predicated on resonance of lithium have argued that this element is virtually absent from the internal milieu of mammals and otherwise plays no role in the normal physiological functioning of the organism. Sophisticated techniques of trace-element analysis have recently revealed that lithium is a normal constituent of tissues of assayed mammals, including those of rats and human beings. There is evidence, too, that lithium is an important, biologically-active element. Cyclotron resonance may or may not be a mechanism by which ELF- and static-magnetic fields at low strengths combine to affect the organism, but rejection of this mechanism on the grounds that lithium is absent or is physiologically inadequate is unwarranted. Lithium is normally present and is metabolically active in many tissues, especially those of the neuroendocrine system.  相似文献

Neonates, 11‐day‐old, and 17‐day‐old captive‐bred bearded dragons (Pogona vitteceps) and wild‐caught adult anoles (Anolis carolinensis) were chemically analyzed to determine the whole‐body concentrations of vitamins E and A, crude protein, and minerals. Significant differences (P<0.05) were noted between neonates and older age groups of the bearded dragons for concentrations of all the minerals except calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). The neonatal animals generally exhibited lower concentrations of all minerals, except for magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe), than did the older lizards. The concentration of vitamin E was higher, and that of vitamin A was lower in neonates than in older animals. The whole‐body concentrations of protein, vitamins A and E, Ca, P, potassium (K), sodium (Na), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) differed significantly between the bearded dragons and anoles. Retinol (n = 17 spp.) and α-tocopherol (n = 9 spp.) concentrations in whole fish utilized for captive animal feeding programs were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) following routine storage and preparation after commercial purchase by two zoological institutions. Vitamin A activity was calculated from retinol values and ranged from 55 IU/100 g (immature herring) to >2,000 IU/100 g (salmon) on an as-fed basis. α-Tocopherol values, a measure of vitamin E activity, ranged from 0.9 IU/100 g (butterfish) to 12.3 IU/100 g (tilapia) on a wet basis. Vitamin levels in whole fish were intermediate to values previously quantified for muscle or liver tissues alone. Vitamin concentrations in fish livers were quantified separately in seven of these species; liver contributed 35–63% of total retinol measured and 8–34% of total α-tocopherol. Based on these analyses, whole fish commonly fed in zoos, aquariums, and marine zoological parks would appear to meet vitamin A requirements established for most species without additional supplementation, whereas levels of vitamin E quantified indicate a need for supplementation of diets for piscivores.  相似文献

Trace element status is known to be altered in the diabetic state, although the factors affecting trace element homeostasis in this condition are not well understood. The authors examined the effects of a high fructose diet (40% wt:wt) vs a control diet on the copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations in the kidney, plasma, and red blood cells of islet transplanted (TX) and shamoperated (SHAM) rats. Male, Wistar Furth rats made diabetic by streptozotocin injection (55 mg/kg, iv) were given an intraportal islet transplant (1000 islets); control animals were shaminjected, shamoperated (SHAM). Rats within TX and SHAM groups were assigned to either a high fructose diet (40% fructose, 25% cornstarch, FR) or a purified control diet (33% cornstarch, 33% dextrose, CNTL) containing identical amounts of mineral mixture for a period of 6 wk. Kidney Cu concentration was significantly elevated among hyperglycemie TXCNTL rats (224 ± 25 nmol/g wet wt), but was markedly reduced in hyperglycemic TXFR rats (109 ± 14 nmol/g) relative to normoglycemic controls. This occurred in spite of similar levels of glucose, insulin (fed and fasted), insulin secretory capacity, body weight, and food intake in the TXCNTL and TXFR groups. Among the subgroup of rats with normal glucose levels post-TX, kidney Cu levels normalized and were unaffected by dietary treatment (normoglycemic TXCNTL = 60 ± 5 nmol/g; normoglycemic TXFR = 40 ± 2 nmol/g). Kidney Cu concentrations also were unaffected by fructose feeding in SHAM animals (CNTL, 60 ± 4 nmol/g and FR, 51 ± 5 nmol/g). Kidney Zn and Fe concentrations were similar among the treatment groups. Plasma and red blood cell (RBC) Cu, Zn, and Fe concentrations were also similar among the groups. Since fructose feeding led to a substantial reduction of kidney Cu concentrations in the presence of hyperglycemia, the authors suggest that this model can be useful in examining effects of altered kidney Cu accumulation in the diabetic animal.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the impact of ischemia-reperfusion on antioxidant enzyme activities and trace element concentrations. For this purpose, ischemia was initiated by clamping superior mesenteric artery of Wistar (albino) rats for 30 min, followed by reperfusion for 20 min. Immediately after reperfusion, blood samples were taken and examined for red cell copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn-SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities spectrophotometrically and plasma zinc, copper, and magnesium concentrations by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In the ischemiareperfusion group, red cell Cu-Zn-SOD activity and plasma zinc and copper concentrations were increased significantly (p<0.001) when compared to the control group; however, the increases in GPx activity and plasma magnesium concentration were not significant (p>0.05). We also found a significant (p<0.01) decrease in catalase activity. Free radicals released as a consequence of ischemia-reperfusion caused significant alterations in antioxidant enzymes and in the concentrations of trace elements. Although rodents are an integral part of numerous carnivore diets, there is little published information regarding nutrient composition in free‐ranging mice for comparison with laboratory‐reared prey. Cotton mice (Peromyscus gossypinus, n=6) were captured on St. Catherines Island, Georgia, and analyzed for water, ash, protein, and fat content (proximate constituents), as well as minerals and the fat‐soluble vitamins A and E. The overall body composition (mean±SD: 65.8%±1.9% water, 10.9%±2.2% ash, 56.4%±4.1% protein, and 27.2%±3.9% fat) was similar to published values for adult laboratory mice (Mus domesticus). The macro‐ (Ca, K, Mg, Na, and P) and trace (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) mineral levels were also similar to previously reported values for laboratory mice, and in general met or exceeded the established nutrient requirements for domestic carnivores. Vitamin E ranged from 77 to 170 IU/kg dry matter (DM) in these mice–again, similar to values previously quantified in laboratory mice. However, the vitamin A concentrations (21,947±6,893 IU/kg DM) in the free‐ranging mice were consistently and substantially lower than values reported for whole laboratory mice. To our knowledge, this is the first quantification of vitamin A in free‐ranging mice used as prey by carnivores. While other nutrients measured were similar between captive‐reared and free‐ranging mice, the current data suggest the need for further investigation of vitamin A nutrition in the development of optimal diets for carnivores in captivity. A variety of invertebrates are commonly fed to insectivorous animals by both zoos and hobbyists, but information as to the nutrient composition of most commercially raised species is limited. Adult house crickets, house cricket nymphs (Acheta domesticus), superworms (Zophobas morio larvae), giant mealworm larvae, mealworm larvae and adult mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), waxworm larvae (Galleria mellonella), and silkworm larvae (Bombyx mori) were analyzed for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins. Earthworms (Lumbricus terresstris) were analyzed for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash, ADF, NDF, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins A and D3. Proximate analyses were variable, with wide ranges found for moisture (57.9–83.6%), crude protein (9.3–23.7%), crude fat (1.6–24.9%), ADF (0.1–7.4%), NDF (0.0–11.5%), and ash (0.6–1.2%). Energy content ranged from a low of 674 kcal/kg for silkworms to 2,741 kcal/kg for waxworms.Using an amino acid scoring pattern for rats, the first limiting amino acid for all invertebrates tested was the total sulfur amino acid methionine+cystine. Deficiencies by nutrient (% of samples deficient vs. NRC requirements for rats on a dry matter (DM) basis) were as follows: calcium (100%), vitamin D3 (100%), vitamin A (89%), vitamin B12 (75%), thiamin (63%), vitamin E (50%), iodine (44%), manganese (22%), methionine‐cystine (22%), and sodium (11%). Deficiencies by invertebrate species (number of nutrients deficient vs. the NRC requirements for rats on a DM basis) were as follows: waxworms (9), superworms (8), giant mealworm larvae (7), adult mealworms (6), mealworm larvae (5), adult house crickets (4), house cricket nymphs (4), silkworms (4), and earthworms (4). These data provide a basis for determining nutrient intake of captive insectivores, and will aid in the development of gut‐loading diets to provide captive insectivorous animals with appropriate levels of necessary nutrients. Polyphenol-rich plant products as feed supplements have been shown to exert beneficial effects on feed efficiency in piglets. However, tannins as components of polyphenol-rich plant products are able to reduce the absorption of various trace elements. The present study investigated the effect of two polyphenol-rich dietary supplements, grape seed and grape marc meal extract (GME) and spent hops (SH), on iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) status in piglets supplied adequately with those trace elements. A trial with three groups of piglets which received a Control diet or the same diet supplemented with either 1% GME or 1% SH over a period of 4 weeks was performed. Concentrations of Fe, Zn and Cu in plasma, total iron binding capacity and saturation of transferrin in plasma did not differ between the three groups. Piglets fed the diet supplemented with SH showed no differences in the concentrations of Fe, Zn and Cu in the liver in comparison to the Control group. Piglets fed the diets supplemented with GME showed slightly lower concentrations of Zn and Cu in the liver than Control piglets (p < 0.05); however, concentrations of both elements remained in the physiological range. Overall, this study shows that the polyphenol-rich plant products GME and SH had marginal effect on the status of Fe, Zn and Cu in piglets.  相似文献

利用国标方法对莓叶委陵菜地上部分和地下部分的还原糖、灰分、粗蛋白、粗脂肪、粗纤维等常量营养成分进行了测定,利用等离子体原子发射光谱法对莓叶委陵菜地上部分和地下部分的必需微量元素测定。结果表明:莓叶委陵菜具有高蛋白、高纤维、低脂肪的特点,并含有多种与人体健康密切相关的无机元素,如钙、镁、钠、磷、钾、硒、铜、锌、铁、锰、锶、铬等,地上部分中的营养成分较高。因此,莓叶委陵菜营养成分丰富,具有较高的开发利用价值。  相似文献

The determination of inorganic ions in cataractous human lenses has been the subject of several investigations; nevertheless, few studies have been concerned with trace element contents in lenses, and data are sometimes contradictory. An animal experimental model of induced cataract is here proposed with the aim of evaluating the changes of Ca, Na, K, Cu and Zn concentrations. The cataract was produced by an Nd: YAG Laser treatment of the right eye of sexteen male rabbits. The determination of the elements was performed by atomic absorption spectrometry (both flame and flameless methods) after an acid digestion of samples. Compared with the results obtained in left lenses used as a control (Ca 14.4±5.7 mg/kg d.w.; Na 1.3±0.5 g/kg d.w.; K 9.9±1.1 g/kg d.w.; Cu 0.24±0.09 mg/kg d.w.; Zn 24.8±2.3 mg/kg d.w.), the mean concentration values of opaque lenses showed some significant changes for Ca, Na, and Cu (Ca 123.7±106.6 mg/kg d.w.; Na 4.5±4.3 g/kg d.w; Cu 0.43±0.21 mg/kg d.w.). Potassium showed a tendency to decrease, and zinc to increase. Positive correlations were found between calcium and sodium both in controls (r=0.73, p<0.001) and in treated lenses (r=0.87, p< 0.0001). An inverse correlation between Ca and K confirmed the tendency of potassium to decrease.  相似文献

The fluoride (F), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and phosphorus (P) content in potable water and food samples (cereals, pulses, and vegetables) from endemic and nonendemic villages for fluorosis were analyzed. It was found that the F content in water was significantly higher (p<0.01) in endemic villages (4.20±1.6 ppm) than control villages (0.63±0.15 ppm), whereas the Ca, Cu, and Mg contents were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05) in endemic villages compared to control villages. However, there was no significant difference in Zn and P contents between the villages. Foods (cereals, pulses, and vegetables) grown in endemic villages contained significantly higher (p<0.01) fluoride content as compared to control villages. There was no significant difference in Ca, Mg, P, and Zn contents in food grown in endemic and control villages. Copper content in cereals (p<0.05), pulses (p<0.01), and vegetables (p<0.01) in endemic villages was found significantly higher as compared to control villages. The overall prevalence of dental fluorosis in six endemic villages was 97.4% in boys and 96% in girls, which was significantly higher (p<0.01) than that of control villages, where it was 10.5% in boys and 8.3% in girls. The prevalence of dental fluorosis was positively correlated (r=0.125, p<0.01) to fluoride and negatively correlated to Ca and Cu content in drinking water in endemic villages.  相似文献

To clarify the mineral status in selenium (Se)-deficient rats fed a vitamin-free casein (VFC)-based or torula yeast (TY)-based diet, 24 weanling male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups fed diets using VFC or TY as the protein source and containing Se at sufficient (0.5 μg/g,+Se) or deficient (0.019 μg/g for VFC-based and <0.005 μg/g for TY-based diets,Se) level for 8 wk. TY supplied a larger amount of extra minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) except Se than VFC. Se concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity were significantly lower in TY-fed rats than in VFC-fed rats, as well as inSe rats compared to+Se rats. Compared to+Se rats, Fe concentration was higher in liver and muscle ofSe rats fed the VFC-based diet and in plasma, heart, liver, and tibia ofSe rats fed the TY-based diet. Compared to+Se rats, decreases of Mn concentration appeared in plasma, heart, and tibia of VFC-fedSe rats and in brain, heart, liver and tibia of TY-fedSe rats. There was also a little imbalance in Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Cu caused by Se deficiency. The results indicated that Se deficiency induced the mineral imbalance in rats, especially an increase in Fe and decrease in Mn, which was more severe in TY-fed rats than VFC-fed rats. However, TY cannot be used as a model for both Se and other mineral deficiency because of the extra minerals except Se found in TY. Instead, VFC can be employed, which contains fewer minerals except Se than TY and also can produce a severe degree of Se deficiency.  相似文献

Age-related changes in the concentrations of constituent elements in the brains of rats and mice 1 wk to 24 mo old were determined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Seventeen elements could be determined with reasonable accuracy and reproducibility. They were P, K, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, Rb, Al, Mn, Sr, Mo, Co, Pb, Cs, and Cd in order of concentrations in the adult rat brains. In these elements, six major elements (P, K, Na, Fe, Mg, Ca) were determined with ICP-AES and the others with ICP-MS. The concentrations of each element and the pattern of age-related changes were similar between the rat and mouse brains. The elements of which concentrations decreased with aging were K and Rb. On the other hand, the concentrations of some metal elements, including Fe, Cu, Sr, and Co, appeared to increase with growth and aging. The concentrations of other elements were relatively constant throughout the age examined.  相似文献

The forests in northwest Republic of Congo contain a number of herbaceous swamp clearings that provide foraging sites for lowland gorillas (G.g. gorilla). A 10-month study at the Maya Nord clearing (Parc National d'Odzala) showed that feeding activities occupied 72% of the time visiting gorillas spent on the clearing. They fed on four plant species: Enydra fluctuans (Asteraceae), Cyperus sp., Pycreus mundtii, and Rhynchospora corymbosa (Cyperaceae) among the 45 species recorded on the clearing. These clearing food species have higher mineral contents (especially Na and Ca) than the dominant Marantaceae species (Haumania liebrechtsiana) that constituted a staple food plant for gorillas in this forest. They also have higher potassium contents and contain less lignin than non-eaten clearing items/species. Finally, the most actively searched for clearing food (Enydra fluctuans) was characterized by the highest amount of Na and Ca. These results suggest that the mineral content (especially in Na, Ca, and/or K) could determine the feeding selectivity of gorillas at the clearing. They also tend to confirm that the amount of fiber plays a deterrent role in food selectivity, as has been found by many authors. The high density of gorillas in that region could result from the combination of the large areas of Marantaceae forests that provide abundant though monotonous food, and the number of clearings that provide sufficient mineral supplies. Clearings should thus be considered as key habitats for the conservation of gorillas.  相似文献

The chemical properties of Ge are similar to Si. This study investigated whether Ge can substitute for, or is antagonistic to, Si in bone formation. Sixty male weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to treatment groups of 12 and 6 in a 2×4 factorially arranged experiment. The independent variables were, per gram fresh diet, Si (as sodium metasilicate) at 0 or 25 μg and Ge (as sodium germanate) at 0, 5, 30 or 60 μg. Results confirmed that Ge does not enhance Si deprivation and provided evidence that Ge apparently can replace Si in functions that influence bone composition. When Si was lacking in the diet, calcium and magnesium concentrations of the femur were decreased; this was reversed by feeding either Ge and/or Si. Similar effects were found for zinc, sodium, iron, manganese, and potassium of vertebra. There were some responses to Si deprivation that Ge could not reverse: Ge did not increase femur copper, sodium, or phosphorus or decrease molybdenum of vertebra, effects that were eveked by Si supplementation. Additionally, some findings suggested that 60 μg Ge/g diet could be a toxic intake for the rat. On the other hand, some responses induced by Ge indicate that this element may be acting physiologically other than as a substitute for Si. Germanium itself affected bone composition. Germanium supplementation decreased Si and molybdenum in the femur and increased DNA in tibia. Regardless of the amount of Si fed, animals fed 30 μg Ge/g diet had increased tibial DNA compared to animals fed 0 or 60 μg Ge; however, tibial DNA of animals fed 30 μg Ge was not statistically different from those animals fed 5 μg Ge. 探讨了阿拉善干旱荒漠区霸王、白刺、红砂、沙冬青、沙木蓼、梭梭和驼绒藜7种旱生灌木根际与非根际土壤Ca、Mg、Fe、Mn、Zn、Cu的含量特征.结果表明:(1)除梭梭根际pH值高于非根际之外,其余6种灌木根际土壤均表现出不同程度的酸化作用.(2)7种灌木根际全钙和交换性钙的含量均低于非根际.除沙木蓼和驼绒藜外,其余5种灌木根际全镁含量均高于非根际,白刺的富集率最高,为43.04%;除沙木蓼外,其余灌木根际交换性镁的含量均有所富集,梭梭的富集率最高,为26.52%.(3)7种灌木根际全铁、全锰、全锌含量总体上小于非根际,但是根际有效铁、有效锰、有效锌含量均大于非根际,表现出明显的富集效应,沙木蓼根际有效铁、有效锰、有效锌的富集率最高,分别为:29.76%、20.92%、86.99%.(4)沙木蓼根际全铜和有效铜含量略高于非根际.梭梭根际全铜含量低于非根际,但梭梭根际有效铜含量却有富集的趋势.其余五种灌木根际全铜和有效铜含量均低于非根际.(5)根际及非根际土壤各养分性状之间,存在复杂的相关性.  相似文献

Egg production by the cereal spider Erigone atra was used as a fitness parameter for evaluating the food quality of two species of Collembola: Folsomia fimetaria and Isotoma anglicana. Drosophila melanogaster was used as reference prey. We tested the hypothesis that due to differences in food quality, the two Collembola species would affect the reproduction of the spider differently. The quality ranking of the prey types turned out as: I. anglicana > D. melanogaster > F. fimetaria. With F. fimetaria alone, spiders were unable to maintain reproduction. E. atra was more efficient in utilising I. anglicana and D. melanogaster. Thus, daily consumption rates of I. anglicana were lower in spite of higher egg laying rates by E. atra. A mixed diet of F. fimetaria and D. melanogaster resulted in a lower reproductive output than a pure diet of D. melanogaster, indicating a toxic element in F. fimetaria. In the mixed diet F. fimetaria had a negative influence on the consumption capacity of the spider towards D. melanogaster, while D. melanogaster had a positive influence on the consumption capacity towards F. fimetaria. It is concluded that a high abundance of I. anglicana may support a high reproductive output of E. atra, while the presence, of F. fimetaria in fields may reduce the spider's reproductive output.  相似文献

The role of some inorganic elements like vanadium, zinc, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper, manganese, and traces of chromium in the improvement of impaired glucose tolerance and their indirect role in the management of diabetes mellitus are being increasingly recognized. In traditional methods, medicinal plants are being used, which contain both organic and inorganic constituents. In the present study, an attempt has been made to analyze the inorganic elements present in Aloe vera leat gel and their role on diabetes-related biochemical alterations in experimental rats. Special emphasis was given to the inorganic parts by carefully preparing ash of the leaf gel. The results clearly indicate the presence of several hypoglycemic-activity-possessing elements in the gel. The ash treatment also resulted in hypoglycemic action. In conclusion, the presence of various inorganic trace elements in the gel might account for the hypoglycemic nature of the plant.  相似文献
