At 6 months the 12 superobese children on protein-sparing modified fast diet had a significant weight loss from baseline (-5.6 ± 7.1 kg, ANOVA p < 0.02); a significant decrease in percentage IBW (-24.3 ± 20%, ANOVA p < 0.002); and had positive growth velocity Z-score (1.3 ± 1.6, ANOVA p < 0.05). Six children were not superobese at 6 months. At 6 months eight of 12 children were active participants and 11 of 12 children were followed. Decrease in blood pressure, as well as, downward trends in serum lipids were observed at 6 months. No clinical complications were observed. At 6 months, the 7 control superobese children, when compared with baseline had gained weight (2.8 ± 3.1 kg, ANOVA p < 0.008); but had no significant change in percentage IBW (-0.3 ± 5.9%, ANOVA p = 0.61); and had no changes in growth velocity Z-score (0.1 ± 1.3, ANOVA p = 0.83). These children did not have any change in blood pressure and an upward trend in serum lipids were observed at 6 months. Protein-sparing modified fast diet and a hypocaloric balanced diet appear to be effective in a group of superobese-school-age children in a medically supervised clinic-based program implemented in a school setting over a 6-month period. The efforts of committed clinic staffs, school officials, peers, and family involvement were crucial to the success of this intervention program in promoting and maintaining weight loss over a 6-month period. Further research with a specific comparison of the hypocaloric diets with longer follow-up periods in the school setting is necessary. In the meantime, these diets should be used only with close medical supervision. 相似文献

In humans, long-term exposure to uncontrollable and unpredictable life stressors is a major precipitant in the development of depressive disorders. There are strong evidences that depression is accompanied by lower serum zinc. The aim of present study is to assess the effects of repeated psychological stress (PS) on the zinc metabolism in rat. The rats were divided into control group and PS group which were subdivided into three subgroups: 7-day group, 14-day group, and recovery group (ten rats in each subgroup). PS model was created by a communication box which contains room A and room B. Rats in room A were only exposed to the responses of rats which were randomly given electrical shock for 30 min in room B. PS was given to rats for 30 min every morning for 14 days. The serum corticosterone (CORT), zinc in serum and tissues, and zinc apparent absorption after PS exposure were investigated. The results showed that the serum CORT increased and serum zinc decreased after 7 and 14 days of PS treatment. The zinc concentration in the liver was increased by 14 days PS exposure, whereas its concentration in the hippocampus was decreased by 7 and 14 days of PS exposure. There were no significant changes in zinc concentration in the heart, spleen, kidney, duodenum, cortex, and cerebellum. A decrease in the zinc apparent absorption was observed in the 7- and 14-day PS groups. The increased serum CORT and liver zinc concentrations and decreased serum zinc and apparent absorption of zinc recovered to normal concentrations 7 days away from PS exposure. The results suggest that PS could induce lower serum zinc, which might be correlated with decreased zinc absorption in the small intestine and increased liver zinc accumulation after PS exposure. The consequent effects of decreased hippocampal and serum zinc and increased CORT concentration after PS exposure on stress-related diseases await further research. 相似文献

Objectives: To investigate how obese adolescents think about themselves in terms of exercise, eating, and appearance and whether these cognitions change over the course of a residential weight loss camp. Research Methods and Procedures: Obese adolescents [N = 61; age, 14.1 (±0.2) years; BMI, 33.9 (±0.7) kg/m2] completed assessments of body weight and height and self‐esteem and a sentence‐completion test eliciting thoughts and beliefs about exercise, eating, and appearance at the start and end of the camp (mean stay, 26 days). They were compared with a single assessment of 20 normal‐weight adolescents [age, 15.4 (±0.2) years; BMI, 21.8 (±0.5) kg/m2]. Results: The obese adolescents lost 5.7 kg and reduced their BMI SD score by 0.25. Camp residence was associated with a significant reduction in the number of negative automatic thoughts and an increase in positive thoughts, especially related to exercise and appearance. There was no change in conditional beliefs, either functional or dysfunctional. Including BMI SD score change as a covariate took away all the main and interaction effects of time, showing that cognitive change was largely accounted for by the reduction in weight. Despite this improvement, campers remained cognitively more negative and dysfunctional than the normal‐weight comparison adolescents. Discussion: Obese adolescents not only lost weight, but they improved their self‐representation, specifically in terms of automatic thoughts about exercise and appearance. Although these are short‐term cognitive changes, they reflect positively on the camp experience and show the value of psychological improvement in assessing obesity‐treatment outcomes. 相似文献

Obesity is epidemic among adolescents in the United States. We sought to analyze the anthropometric measures of adiposity and fasting indices of insulin resistance, including insulin‐like growth factor–binding protein‐1 (IGFBP‐1), and to provide a clinical estimate of intraperitoneal (IP) fat in obese adolescents (BMI ≥95th percentile), between ages 13 and 17 years. Subjects had baseline testing to determine eligibility for a subsequent randomized, placebo‐controlled trial of metformin XR therapy. Anthropometry and dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) were used to quantify total body fat while abdominal computed tomography (CT) was used to measure IP (CT‐IP) and subcutaneous (CT‐SQ) fat. Using anthropometry and fasting laboratory data, we constructed regression models for both CT‐IP and CT‐SQ. A total of 92 subjects, 33 males, were evaluated. Of the 92 subjects, 19 were black. Fasting insulin concentrations were highly associated with other measures of insulin resistance. Median percent body fat across all subjects, as measured by DXA, was 41%. Using CT measures, 67% of abdominal cross‐sectional area was fat, 14% of which was IP fat. In multiple regression analysis, waist circumference (WC) and BMI, jointly and independently, were strongly associated with both CT‐IP and CT‐SQ fat. BMI and WC explained 62% of variance of CT‐SQ fat, but only 26% of variance of CT‐IP fat. Adding triglyceride:high‐density lipoprotein (TG:HDL) ratio and IGFBP‐1 (among nonblacks) to the regression model increased the explained variance for estimating CT‐IP fat to 45%. When evaluating the metabolic morbidity of an obese adolescent, a model using fasting IGFBP‐1, TG:HDL, BMI, and WC may be worthwhile as an estimate of IP fat. 相似文献

Background
Reduced calorie, low fat diet is currently recommended diet for overweight and obese adults. Prior data suggest that low carbohydrate diets may also be a viable option for those who are overweight and obese.Purpose
Compare the effects of low carbohydrate versus low fats diet on weight and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk in overweight and obese patients.Data Sources
Systematic literature review via PubMed (1966–2014).Study Selection
Randomized controlled trials with ≥8 weeks follow up, comparing low carbohydrate (≤120gm carbohydrates/day) and low fat diet (≤30% energy from fat/day).Data Extraction
Data were extracted and prepared for analysis using double data entry. Prior to identification of candidate publications, the outcomes of change in weight and metabolic factors were selected as defined by Cochrane Collaboration. Assessment of the effects of diets on predicted risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk was added during the data collection phase.Data Synthesis
1797 patients were included from 17 trials with <1 year follow up in 12. Compared with low fat diet, low carbohydrate was associated with significantly greater reduction in weight (Δ = -2.0 kg, 95% CI: -3.1, -0.9) and significantly lower predicted risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events (p<0.03). Frequentist and Bayesian results were concordant. The probability of greater weight loss associated with low carbohydrate was >99% while the reduction in predicted risk favoring low carbohydrate was >98%.Limitations
Lack of patient-level data and heterogeneity in dropout rates and outcomes reported. Conclusions
This trial-level meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing LoCHO diets with LoFAT diets in strictly adherent populations demonstrates that each diet was associated with significant weight loss and reduction in predicted risk of ASCVD events. However, LoCHO diet was associated with modest but significantly greater improvements in weight loss and predicted ASCVD risk in studies from 8 weeks to 24 months in duration. These results suggest that future evaluations of dietary guidelines should consider low carbohydrate diets as effective and safe intervention for weight management in the overweight and obese, although long-term effects require further investigation. 相似文献6.

Background
It is not clear whether the association between sedentary time and cardiometabolic risk exists among obese adolescents. We examined the association between screen time (TV and computer time) and cardiometabolic risk in obese Dutch adolescents. Methods and Findings
For the current cross-sectional study, baseline data of 125 Dutch overweight and obese adolescents (12–18 years) participating in the Go4it study were included. Self-reported screen time (Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults) and clustered and individual cardiometabolic risk (i.e. body composition, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, low-density (LDL-C), high-density (HDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, glucose and insulin) were assessed in all participants. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to assess the association between screen time and cardiometabolic risk, adjusting for age, gender, pubertal stage, ethnicity and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. We found no significant relationship between self-reported total screen time and clustered cardiometabolic risk or individual risk factors in overweight and obese adolescents. Unexpectedly, self-reported computer time, but not TV time, was slightly but significantly inversely associated with TC (B = −0.002; CI = [−0.003;−0.000]) and LDL-C (B = −0.002; CI = [−0.001;0.000]).Conclusions
In obese adolescents we could not confirm the hypothesised positive association between screen time and cardiometabolic risk. Future studies should consider computer use as a separate class of screen behaviour, thereby also discriminating between active video gaming and other computer activities. 相似文献7.

ObjectiveTo determine the prevalence of elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in obese children and adolescents referred to pediatric endocrinology clinics.MethodsWe undertook a retrospective review of medical records of 191 obese and 125 nonobese children (younger than 18 years old). Data about age, sex, body mass index, TSH, thyroid functions, thyroid antibodies, thyroid size, and medications were collected.ResultsSix obese patients had Hashimoto disease and TSH values from 0.73 to 12.73 mIU/L; they were excluded from the study analyses. Of the remaining 185 obese subjects, 20 (10.8%) had TSH levels > 4 mIU/L, but no control subject measurement exceeded this TSH value. The highest TSH concentration in an obese study subject was 7.51 mIU/L. When obese children with TSH levels > 4 mIU/L were classified in a third group, the mean TSH in the rest of the obese children was comparable with that in the control group (1.98 ± 0.84 [SD] and 1.95 ± 0.80 mIU/L, respectively; post hoc analysis of variance, P = .945). Obese subjects with increased TSH values had a mean body mass index similar to that for obese subjects with normal TSH levels (34.98 ± 6.12 [SD] and 34.29 ± 7.84 kg/m2, respectively).ConclusionMild elevation of TSH values in the absence of autoimmune thyroid disease is not uncommon in some obese children and adolescents. This is the second study in the United States to report this observation. Our study did not identify any special characteristics of obese subjects with TSH elevation in comparison with obese children with normal TSH levels and the control group. Current medical knowledge does not support routine screening for thyroid dysfunction in obese children. (Endocr Pract. 2010;16:187-190) 相似文献

Studies have evidenced that zinc metabolism is altered in presence of Down syndrome, and zinc seems to have a relationship
with the metabolic alterations usually present in this syndrome. In this work, the Zn-related nutritional status of adolescents
with Down syndrome was evaluated by means of biochemical parameters and diet. A case–control study was performed in a group
of adolescents with Down syndrome (n = 30) and a control group (n = 32), of both sexes, aged 10 to 19 years. Diet evaluation was accomplished by using a 3-day dietary record, and the analysis
was performed by the NutWin program, version 1.5. Antropometric measurements were performed for evaluation of body composition.
The Zn-related nutritional status of the groups was evaluated by means of zinc concentration determinations in plasma and
erythrocytes, and 24-h urinary zinc excretion, by using the method of atomic absorption spectroscopy. The diet of both groups
presented adequate concentrations of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and zinc. The mean values found for zinc concentration
in erythrocytes were 49.2 ± 8.5 μg Zn/g Hb for the Down syndrome group and 35.9 ± 6.1 μg Zn/g Hb for the control group (p = 0.001). The average values found for zinc concentration in plasma were 67.6 ± 25.6 μg/dL for the Down syndrome group and
68.9 ± 22.3 μg/dL for the control group. The mean values found for zinc concentration in urine were 244.3 ± 194.9 μg Zn/24 h
for the Down syndrome group and 200.3 ± 236.4 μg Zn/24 h for the control group. Assessment of body composition revealed overweight
(26.7%) and obesity (6.6%) in the Down syndrome group. In this study, patients with Down syndrome presented altered zinc levels
for some cellular compartments, and the average zinc concentrations were low in plasma and urine and elevated in erythrocytes. 相似文献

Objective: To investigate the contribution of meal and snack replacements for long‐term weight maintenance and risk factor reduction in obese patients. Research Methods and Procedures: Prospective, randomized, two‐arm, parallel intervention for 12 weeks followed by a prospective single‐arm 4‐year trial in a University Hospital clinic. One hundred patients, >18 years old and with a body mass index > 25 and ≤ 40 kg/m2, were prescribed a 1200 to 1500 kcal/d control diet (Group A) or an isoenergetic diet, including two meal and snack replacements (vitamin‐ and mineral‐fortified shakes, soups, and bars) and one meal high in fruits and vegetables (Group B). Following a 3 months of weight loss, all patients were prescribed the same energy‐restricted diet (1200 to 1500 kcal) with one meal and one snack replacement for an additional 4 years. Results: All 100 patients were evaluated at 12 weeks. Mean percentage weight loss was 1.5 ± 0.4% and 7.8 ± 0.5% (mean ± SEM) for Groups A and B, respectively. At 12 weeks systolic blood pressure, plasma triacylglycerol, glucose, and insulin concentrations were significantly reduced in Group B, whereas no changes occurred in Group A. After 4 years, 75% of the patients were evaluated. Total mean weight loss was 3.2 ± 0.8% for Group A and 8.4 ± 0.8% (mean ± SEM) for Group B. Both groups showed significant improvement in blood glucose and insulin (p < 0.001), but only Group B showed significant improvement in triacylglycerol and systolic blood pressure compared to baseline values (p < 0.001). Discussion: Providing a structured meal plan via vitamin‐ and mineral‐fortified liquid meal replacements is a safe and effective dietary strategy for obese patients. Long‐term maintenance of weight loss with meal replacements can improve certain biomarkers of disease risk. 相似文献

The reason for weight loss at high altitudes is largely unknown. To date, studies have been unable to differentiate between weight loss due to hypobaric hypoxia and that related to increased physical exercise. The aim of our study was to examine the effect of hypobaric hypoxia on body weight at high altitude in obese subjects. We investigated 20 male obese subjects (age 55.7 ± 4.1 years, BMI 33.7 ± 1.0 kg/m2). Body weight, waist circumference, basal metabolic rate (BMR), nutrition protocols, and objective activity parameters as well as metabolic and cardiovascular parameters, blood gas analysis, leptin, and ghrelin were determined at low altitude (LA) (Munich 530 m, D1), at the beginning and at the end of a 1‐week stay at high altitude (2,650 m, D7 and D14) and 4 weeks after returning to LA (D42). Although daily pace counting remained stable at high altitude, at D14 and D42, participants weighed significantly less and had higher BMRs than at D1. Food intake was decreased at D7. Basal leptin levels increased significantly at high altitude despite the reduction in body weight. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower at D7, D14, and D42 compared to D1. This study shows that obese subjects lose weight at high altitudes. This may be due to a higher metabolic rate and reduced food intake. Interestingly, leptin levels rise in high altitude despite reduced body weight. Hypobaric hypoxia seems to play a major role, although the physiological mechanisms remain unclear. Weight loss at high altitudes was associated with clinically relevant improvements in diastolic blood pressure. 相似文献

Research has investigated the participation of zinc transport proteins and metallothionein in the metabolism of this mineral.
However, studies about the genetic expression of these proteins in obese patients are scarce. The study determined the expression
of zinc transporter protein codifying genes (ZnT-1, Zip-1 and Zip-3) and of metallothionein in 55 obese women, aged between
20 and 56 years. The assessment of body composition was carried out using anthropometric measurements and bioelectrical impedance.
Zinc intake was obtained by recording diet over a 3-day period, and the nutritional analysis was carried out using NutWin
software version 1.5. The plasmatic and erythrocytary zinc were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (λ = 213. 9 nm). The determination of mRNA expression of the zinc transporter proteins and metallothionein was carried out using
blood, using the RT-PCR method. The mean values of body mass index were 37.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2. The average intake of zinc was 9.4 ± 2.3 mg/day. The analysis of the zinc plasma concentrations showed values of 58.4 ± 10.9 μg/dL.
The mean values of zinc in the erythroytes were 38.7 ± 9.1 μg/g Hb. The metallothionein gene had a higher expression in the
blood, when compared to zinc transporters ZnT-1, Zip-1, and Zip-3 (p = 0.01). The study shows that there are alterations in the biochemical parameters of zinc in obese patients assessed, as
well as higher expression of the codifying gene metallothionein, when compared to the investigated zinc transporters. 相似文献

Objective: The high prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors in hypopituitarism affirms the need for effective weight loss intervention. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of sibutramine, diet, and exercise in obese hypopituitary patients (HPs). Research Methods and Procedures: In an open‐label prospective intervention trial, 14 obese well‐substituted nondiabetic HPs and 14 matched simple obese controls were allocated to 11‐month treatment with sibutramine (10 to 15 mg), diet (600 kcal/d deficit), and exercise. Anthropometric indices and body composition (obtained from DXA scan) were assessed monthly for the first 5 months and thereafter every second month for the next 6 months. Results: Mean (±SD) weight loss at 11 months was 11.3 ± 4.8 kg in patients vs. 10.7 ± 4.7 kg in controls. The HPs exhibited the same improvements in body composition, waist circumference, blood lipids, and fasting glucose as the simple obese. In a multivariate model, baseline weight, duration of growth hormone replacement therapy, and duration of pituitary disease explained 79% (p = 0.001) of the variation in weight loss at 4 months in the HPs. Only baseline weight and waist circumference could predict weight loss at 11 months. Discussion: HPs are not resistant to weight loss therapy. Almost all will achieve at least 5% weight loss, and 60% can lose >10% weight within 11 months. However, the long‐term effect on risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as on mortality needs to be established. 相似文献

Objective: Previous studies have demonstrated the benefit of short‐term diets on glucose tolerance in obese individuals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of modest lifestyle changes in maintaining improvements in glucose tolerance induced by short‐term energy restriction in obese African Americans with impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Research Methods and Procedures: An intervention group (n = 45; 47 ± 1 year [mean ± SE]), 105 ± 4 kg; body mass index: 39 ± 1 kg/m2) received an energy‐restricted diet (943 ± 26 kcal/d) for 1 week, followed by a lifestyle program of reduced dietary fat (?125 kcal/d) and increased physical activity (+125 kcal/d) for 1 year. Body weight and plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin, and C‐peptide during an oral glucose tolerance test were measured at baseline, 1‐week, and 4‐month intervals. A control group (n = 24; 48 ± 1 year; 110 ± 5 kg; body mass index: 41 ± 2 kg/m2) underwent these measurements at 4‐month intervals. Results: No changes in weight or glucose tolerance were observed in the control group. The intervention group had significant (p < 0.05) improvements in body weight and glucose tolerance in response to the 1‐week diet, which persisted for 4 months (p < 0.001 vs. control for change in weight). A total of 19 subjects (42%) continued the intervention program for 1 year, with sustained improvements (weight: ?4.6 ± 1.0 kg; p < 0.001 vs. control; oral glucose tolerance test glucose area: ?103 ± 44 mM · min; p < 0.05 vs. control). Discussion: A modest lifestyle program facilitates weight loss and enables improvements in glucose tolerance to be maintained in obese individuals with abnormal glucose tolerance. However, attrition was high, despite the mild nature of the program. 相似文献

This study aims at determining the association between markers of hepatic injury and serum, urinary, and intra-erythrocyte
magnesium concentrations and dietary magnesium intake in obese children and adolescents. In a case–control study, 42 obese
children and adolescents (8–18 years) and 42 sex- and puberty-matched controls were studied. Serum, urinary, and intra-erythrocyte
magnesium levels, indices of insulin sensitivity, and liver enzymes were measured. Dietary magnesium intake was assessed using
a food frequency questionnaire. Obese children and adolescents exhibited insulin resistance as determined by a higher fasting
insulin and the HOMA-IR (p < 0.001) and lower QUICKI indices (p = 0.001); in addition these subjects had significantly higher intra-erythrocyte magnesium (IEM) concentrations, than non-obese
ones (3.99 ± 1.05 vs. 3.35 ± 1.26 mg/dL of packed cell; p = 0.015). Among liver enzymes, only gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) was significantly higher in obese than in non-obese
subjects (22.7 ± 9.4 vs. 17.1 ± 7.9 U/l; p = 0.002). A positive association was found between GGT and IEM in both groups; however in multivariate analysis, in obese
subjects, only GGT (p = 0.026) and, in non-obese subjects, only age (p = 0.006) remained as significant predictors of IEM. In conclusion, increased IEM concentration was seen in insulin-resistant
obese children and adolescents; furthermore, serum GGT was associated with IEM, independently of body mass index and HOMA-IR. 相似文献

Unhealthy dietary habits are key determinants of obesity in adolescents. Assuming that dietary fat profile influences membrane lipid composition, the aim of this study was to analyze structural changes in the erythrocyte membrane of obese compared to normal-weight adolescents. The study was conducted in a group of 11 obese and 11 normal-weight adolescent subjects. The lipid profile, lipid peroxidation and acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) activity were analyzed by conventional methods. The structural properties of reconstituted erythrocyte membrane were characterized by X-ray diffraction. Erythrocyte membrane from obese adolescents had a lipid profile characterized by a higher cholesterol/phospholipid ratio, an increase in saturated fatty acid and a decrease in monounsaturated and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations. Differences in lipid content were associated with changes in the structural properties of reconstituted membranes and the oxidative damage of erythrocyte membrane. The lower oxidative level shown in the obese group (0.15 ± 0.04 vs. 0.20 ± 0.06 nmol/mg for conjugated diene concentrations and 2.43 ± 0.25 vs. 2.83 ± 0.31 nmol/mg protein for malondialdehyde levels) was related to a lower unsaturation index. These changes in membrane structural properties were accompanied by a lower AChE activity (1.64 ± 0.13 vs. 1.91 ± 0.24 nmol AChE/[min mg protein]) in the obese group. The consequences of unhealthy dietary habits in adolescents are reflected in the membrane structural properties and may influence membrane-associated protein activities and functions. 相似文献

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) is an effective treatment for severe obesity. Clinical studies however have reported susceptibility to increased alcohol use after RYGB, and preclinical studies have shown increased alcohol intake in obese rats after RYGB. This could reflect a direct enhancement of alcohol’s rewarding effects in the brain or an indirect effect due to increased alcohol absorption after RGYB. To rule out the contribution that changes in alcohol absorption have on its rewarding effects, here we assessed the effects of RYGB on intravenously (IV) administered ethanol (1%). For this purpose, high fat (60% kcal from fat) diet-induced obese male Sprague Dawley rats were tested ∼2 months after RYGB or sham surgery (SHAM) using both fixed and progressive ratio schedules of reinforcement to evaluate if RGYB modified the reinforcing effects of IV ethanol. Compared to SHAM, RYGB rats made significantly more active spout responses to earn IV ethanol during the fixed ratio schedule, and achieved higher breakpoints during the progressive ratio schedule. Although additional studies are needed, our results provide preliminary evidence that RYGB increases the rewarding effects of alcohol independent of its effects on alcohol absorption. 相似文献

The association of giardiasis with the malabsorption of zinc remains controversial. This study investigated changes in serum
zinc levels in Giardia-infected mice subjected to different dietary zinc regimens. Thirty-five mice (strain C3H/HeJ) were randomly categorized into two groups. The first group was inoculated with 5 × 106
Giardia trophozoites (n = 18), and the second group remained Giardia free (n = 17). Each group (Giardia infected and Giardia free) was randomly classified into three subgroups and given low (9 mg Zn/kg), normal (33 mg Zn/kg), and high levels (288 mg
Zn/kg) of dietary zinc over a 2-week period for acclimation. Fourteen days post-Giardia infection, all of the mice were euthanized and blood samples were collected. The number of trophozoites was quantified (hematocytometer),
and serum zinc levels were determined via atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Significant increases in the median weights
were only found in the Giardia-free mice (p < 0.05). A higher final median weight was found in the Giardia-free group when compared with that of the Giardia-infected group given low dietary zinc (p = 0.013). In the Giardia-infected group with low dietary zinc, the geometric mean of trophozoites was 3,498 ± 101 (SE) per milliliter. The Giardia-infected group had lower serum zinc levels than did the Giardia-free group with the high dietary zinc regimens (p < 0.05). Our results are consistent with studies among human populations, but further studies are required to elucidate the
actual mechanism governing the zinc–giardiasis interaction. 相似文献

Objective: To study the effect of dietary weight loss, postural change, and an oral glucose load on serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in obese adults. Research Methods and Procedures: Sixteen obese adult men and women with a mean body mass index of 35.7 ± 4.3 kg/m2 were studied after 1 week on a maintenance energy lead-in diet and after 5 weeks on an identical but 40% reduced-energy diet provided by the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC). ACE activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Plasma renin activity and serum aldosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: All subjects lost weight, with a mean decrease in body weight of 7.0 ± 2.1 kg or 6 ± 3% of initial body weight (p < 0.00001). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, supine plasma renin activity, and serum aldosterone levels decreased with weight loss (p < 0.05). Supine ACE activity decreased 23 ± 12% with weight loss (p < 0.00001). Standing ACE activity, which was significantly higher than supine ACE activity before and after weight loss (p < 0.05), also decreased 18 ± 17% with weight loss (p = 0.0007). A 75-g oral glucose load had no effect on serum ACE activity over a 3-hour period. Discussion: In obese adults, serum ACE activity declines with modest weight loss, increases with postural change, and is unaffected by an oral glucose load. 相似文献

BANDINI, LINDA G. DUNG VU, AVIVA MUST, HELENE CYR, ALISON GOLDBERG, AND WILLIAM H. DIETZ. Comparison of high-calorie, low-nutrient-dense food consumption among obese and non-obese adolescents. ObesRes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether obese adolescents eat more high-calorie low-nutrient-dense foods than non-obese adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: Using a cross-sectional design, 22 non-obese and 21 obese adolescents kept 14-day food records. Records provided estimates of total daily energy intake and caloric intake from five categories of high-calorie, low-nutrient-dense (HC) foods: candy, chips, soda, baked goods, and ice cream. Body composition was determined by 18O dilution and daily energy expenditure by doubly labeled water. Percentage of energy intake reported (%report) was calculated as the ratio of reported energy intake to measured energy expenditure (x 100%). Results: Both groups underreported energy intake, but the percentage reported was significantly greater in the non-obese group (78. ±20. 5% non-obese vs. 55. 5±21. 8% obese, p<0. 001). Consumption of calories from chips and soda was similar among non-obese and obese adolescents. However, total energy intake from all HC foods was higher in the non-obese group than among the obese (617±356 kcal/day vs. 362plusnum;223 kcallday; p<0. 01) and represented 27. 2±10. 5% and 19. 9±9. 6% of reported energy intake in the non-obese and obese groups, respectively. After adjustment for underreporting, the percentage of calories provided by each of the HC foods was similar in the obese and non-obese groups except for ice cream, which remained significantly greater in the non-obese group (p<0. 05). Discussion: Our findings suggest that both non-obese and obese adolescents consume a substantial portion of reported calories from HC foods and that obese adolescents do not consume more calories from these foods than non-obese adolescents. These data offer no evidence to support the widespread notion that obese adolescents eat more “junk food” than non-obese adolescents. Health professionals who treat obese adolescents must be aware that the excess calories in their diets may come from a variety of food sources and not solely from high-calorie snack foods. 相似文献
