From presence to consciousness through virtual reality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Immersive virtual environments can break the deep, everyday connection between where our senses tell us we are and where we are actually located and whom we are with. The concept of 'presence' refers to the phenomenon of behaving and feeling as if we are in the virtual world created by computer displays. In this article, we argue that presence is worthy of study by neuroscientists, and that it might aid the study of perception and consciousness.  相似文献

Background: Biological sex differences and sociocultural gender norms affect the provision of health care products and services, but there has been little explicit analysis of the impact of sex differences and gender norms on the regulation of pharmaceutical development and marketing. Objectives: This article provides an overview of the regulation of pharmaceuticals and examines the ways that regulatory agencies account for sex and gender in their review of scientific data and marketing materials. Methods: The primary focus is on the US context, but information is also included about regulatory models in Europe, Canada, and Japan for comparative purposes. Specific examples show how sex differences and gender norms influence scientific and policy decisions about pharmaceuticals. Results: The United States and Canada were found to be the only countries that have explicit requirements to include women in clinical trials and to perform sex-based subgroup analysis on study results. The potential influence of politics on regulatory decisions may have led to an uneven application of standards, as seen through the examples of mifepristone (for abortion) and sildenafil citrate (for erectile dysfunction). Three detailed case studies illustrate the importance of considering sex and gender in pharmaceutical development and marketing: Phase I clinical trials; human papillomavirus quadrivalent vaccine; and tegaserod, a drug for irritable bowel syndrome. Conclusions: Sex and gender play important roles in pharmaceutical regulation, from the design of clinical trials and the approval of new drugs to advertising and postmarketing surveillance. However, regulatory agencies pay insufficient attention to both biological sex differences and sociocultural gender norms. This disregard perpetuates inequalities by ignoring drug safety problems that predominate in women and by allowing misleading drug marketing that reinforces gender stereotypes. Recommendations have been made to improve the regulation of pharmaceuticals in regard to sex and gender.  相似文献

A computational architecture modeling the relation between perception and action is proposed. Basic brain processes representing synaptic plasticity are first abstracted through asynchronous communication protocols and implemented as virtual microcircuits. These are used in turn to build mesoscale circuits embodying parallel cognitive processes. Encoding these circuits into symbolic expressions gives finally rise to neuro-inspired programs that are compiled into pseudo-code to be interpreted by a virtual machine. Quantitative evaluation measures are given by the modification of synapse weights over time. This approach is illustrated by models of simple forms of behaviors exhibiting cognition up to the third level of animal awareness. As a potential benefit, symbolic models of emergent psychological mechanisms could lead to the discovery of the learning processes involved in the development of cognition. The executable specifications of an experimental platform allowing for the reproduction of simulated experiments are given in “Appendix”.  相似文献

It has become increasingly clear that social learning and culture occur much more broadly, and in a wider variety of animal communities, than initially believed. Recent research has expanded the list to include insects, fishes, elephants, and cetaceans. Such diversity allows scientists to expand the scope of potential research questions, which can help form a more complete understanding of animal culture than any single species can provide on its own. It is crucial to understand how culture and social learning present in different communities, as well as what influences community structure and culture may have on one another, so that the results across these different studies may most effectively inform one another. This review presents an overview of social learning in species across a spectrum of community structures, providing the necessary infrastructure to allow a comparison of studies that will help move the field of animal culture forward.  相似文献

Cooperation among genetically unrelated individuals is commonly explained by the potential for future reciprocity or by the risk of being punished by group members. However, unconditional altruism is more difficult to explain. We demonstrate that unconditional altruism can evolve as a costly signal of individual quality (i.e. a handicap) as a consequence of reciprocal altruism. This is because the emergent correlation between altruism and individual quality in reciprocity games can facilitate the use of altruism as a quality indicator in a much wider context, outside the reciprocity game, thus affecting its further evolution through signalling benefits. Our model, based on multitype evolutionary game theory shows that, when the additive signalling benefit of donating help exceeds the cost for only some individuals (of high-quality state) but not for others (of low-quality state), the population possesses an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) profile wherein high-quality individuals cooperate unconditionally while low-quality individuals defect or play tit-for-tat (TfT). Hence, as predicted by Zahavi's handicap model, signalling benefits of altruistic acts can establish a stable generosity by high-quality individuals that no longer depends on the probability of future reciprocation or punishment.  相似文献

Telomere attrition unleashes genomic instability, promoting cancer development. Once established, however, the malignant clone often re-establishes genomic stability through overexpression of telomerase. In two papers, one in this issue of Cell and one in the subsequent issue, DePinho and colleagues explore the consequences of telomerase re-expression and its validity as a therapeutic target in mouse models of cancer.  相似文献

The olfactory system combines input from multiple receptor types to represent odor information, but there are few explicit examples relating olfactory receptor (OR) activity patterns to odor perception. To uncover these relationships, we performed genome-wide scans on odor-perception phenotypes for ten odors in 1000 Han Chinese and validated results for six of these odors in an ethnically diverse population (n = 364). In both populations, consistent with previous studies, we replicated three previously reported associations (β-ionone/OR5A1, androstenone/OR7D4, cis-3-hexen-1-ol/OR2J3 LD-band), but not for odors containing aldehydes, suggesting that olfactory phenotype/genotype studies are robust across populations. Two novel associations between an OR and odor perception contribute to our understanding of olfactory coding. First, we found a SNP in OR51B2 that associated with trans-3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid, a key component of human underarm odor. Second, we found two linked SNPs associated with the musk Galaxolide in a novel musk receptor, OR4D6, which is also the first human OR shown to drive specific anosmia to a musk compound. We noticed that SNPs detected for odor intensity were enriched with amino acid substitutions, implying functional changes of odor receptors. Furthermore, we also found that the derived alleles of the SNPs tend to be associated with reduced odor intensity, supporting the hypothesis that the primate olfactory gene repertoire has degenerated over time. This study provides information about coding for human body odor, and gives us insight into broader mechanisms of olfactory coding, such as how differential OR activation can converge on a similar percept.  相似文献

Recent studies in vertebrate and invertebrate model organisms uncover the importance of endocytosis for biased signaling during asymmetric cell division. In stem cells, perturbing polarity and asymmetric division affect their selfrenewal causing exponential proliferation, thereby giving rise to cancer. An emerging pattern is that endocytosis controls asymmetric cell division, which underlies stem cell selfrenewal and defective selfrenewal is on the basis of tumorigenesis caused by cancer stem cells.  相似文献

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites of medical and commercial importance, characterized by a severe reduction, or even absence, of cellular components typical of eukaryotes such as mitochondria, Golgi apparatus and flagella. This simplistic cellular organization has made it difficult to infer the evolutionary relationship of Microsporidia to other eukaryotes, because they lack many characters historically used to make such comparisons. Eventually, it was suggested that this simplicity might be due to Microsporidia representing a very early eukaryotic lineage that evolved prior to the origin of many typically eukaryotic features, in particular the mitochondrion. This hypothesis was supported by the first biochemical and molecular studies of the group. In the last decade, however, contrasting evidence has emerged, mostly from molecular sequences, that show Microsporidia are related to fungi, and it is now widely acknowledged that features previously recognized as primitive are instead highly derived adaptations to their obligate parasitic lifestyle. The various sharply differing views on microsporidian evolution resulted in several radical reappraisals of their taxonomy. Here we will chronologically review the causes and consequences for these taxonomic revisions, with a special emphasis on why the unique cellular and genomic features of Microsporidia lured scientists towards the wrong direction for so long.  相似文献

Paleobotanical and molecular studies link diversification of plants in the Mediterranean Basin with the onset of the Mediterranean climate. Screening diversification before this period is needed in order to analyze whether the observed increase in diversification is a legitimate footprint denoting radiation or instead the biological signal of a previous mass extinction or rate stasis period. A shared post-Messinian temporal gap of cladogenesis has been previously observed in two Mediterranean sister genera. Based on this evidence we explored recently published molecular studies to recover lineages with similar diversification profiles exhibiting a cladogenesis gap. Using this criterion, we conducted a meta-analysis of 36 Mediterranean plant lineages with a post-Messinian temporal gap of cladogenesis, including a new molecular dating of Genista (Fabaceae). Whereas 39% of these lineages have not diversified since the Miocene, another 39% began to rediversify during the onset of the Mediterranean climate and the remaining 22% began diversifying again afterwards during the Quaternary. The pattern of Mediterranean diversification recovery after a temporal gap of cladogenesis was also obtained with phylogenetic tree simulations under birth and death processes when forcing one or two temporal shifts in diversification rates. The relative importance of the Mediterranean onset as a driving force promoting speciation or triggering extinction remains as an open question, since neither the mass extinction nor the rate stasis evolutionary scenarios can be rule out. The independent analysis of individual clades within phylogenies is also essential to detect clade-dependent patterns hidden by phylogeny-level ones. We disclose the importance of analyzing diversification patterns of Mediterranean lineages since the Miocene to understand the recent history of the Mediterranean biota.  相似文献

In biodiversity studies a species is often classified as original when it has few closely related species, a definition that reflects its phylogenetic originality. More recently, studies have focussed on biological or functional traits that reflect the role(s) that species play within communities and ecosystems. This has led many studies to an alternative evaluation of species’ originality: its functional originality. Most indices of species' originality were developed to treat the hierarchical structure of a (phylogenetic) tree. The change in perspective from measures of phylogenetic originality to measures of functional originality thus raises methodological issues particularly around the need to develop indices explicitly appropriate for evaluating functional trait-based originality. We compare indices of species' originality including a new index which we develop to evaluate (1) whether phylogenetic originality could serve as a proxy for functional originality in conservation and ecological studies; (2) whether the transformation of functional data into functional trees modifies the way species are ranked according to their originality measures compared to approaches that directly rely on pairwise functional dissimilarities among species; and more generally, (3) whether different indices provide different views on how original species are from each other, hence reflecting different ecological and evolutionary processes that generated patterns of originality. Using simulations and a real case study, we show that: (1) the strong effects of the choice of a clustering approach can affect reported levels of dissimilarities among species; (2) the tree-based approaches could better reflect the trait-generating processes under constant (Brownian) rates of evolution; and (3) phylogenetic originality measures can depart from functional originality measures when species have large amount of independent evolution. Overall, phylogenies may be used at large scales but cannot replace functional approaches designed for depicting community assembly. Indeed, traits involved in ecological processes may have various histories and thus moderate phylogenetic signals. Our comparative study provides approaches and perspectives on the analysis of originality across biological scales of organization from individuals, through populations, up to the originalities of communities and regions.  相似文献

Background

Reverse-engineering gene networks from expression profiles is a difficult problem for which a multitude of techniques have been developed over the last decade. The yearly organized DREAM challenges allow for a fair evaluation and unbiased comparison of these methods.

Results

We propose an inference algorithm that combines confidence matrices, computed as the standard scores from single-gene knockout data, with the down-ranking of feed-forward edges. Substantial improvements on the predictions can be obtained after the execution of this second step.

Conclusions

Our algorithm was awarded the best overall performance at the DREAM4 In Silico 100-gene network sub-challenge, proving to be effective in inferring medium-size gene regulatory networks. This success demonstrates once again the decisive importance of gene expression data obtained after systematic gene perturbations and highlights the usefulness of graph analysis to increase the reliability of inference.  相似文献
