A cuckoo Cuculus canorus dummy was exposed at 24 nests of great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus (GRW) and 34 nests of reed warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus (RW) during the egg-laying stage. The eight GRW pairs attacked the cuckoo directly, striking the dummy, but such a behaviour was not recorded in RWs. Also, other behavioural measures (closest distance from the model, duration of distress calls and number of excitement calls) indicated a lower level of defence by RWs compared to GRWs. In the study area, the parasitism rate was much lower in GRWs (1.7% of nests) than in RWs (11.3%). We suggest that one of the reasons for the lower level of cuckoo parasitism on GRWs is its stronger nest defence and hence higher risk of injury or even death for the cuckoo during egg dumping.  相似文献

We examined long-term responses in the breeding performance of the Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus to climate change. The study took place in various years from 1970 to 2007. During the study period, mean temperatures in the breeding season of the species increased and precipitation decreased significantly. We found evidence for the significant advancement in both earliest and annual median first-egg-laying dates. This advancement correlated with temperature increases early in the season. The latest first-egg laying dates, however, remained unchanged. Other breeding statistics: clutch size, nest losses, and production of young per nest, did not change significantly over the study period. Precipitation did not affect any of the analysed measures. It is important to note, though, that during dry seasons, the production of young per successful nest was higher. In contrast to some woodland species, the Great Reed Warbler seems to adapt well to climate change by shifting laying dates. The reason for this is probably to optimise food resources.  相似文献

The Basra reed warbler (Acrocephalus griseldis) and the cinereous bunting (Emberiza cineracea) are the only two Western Palearctic passerine bird species that overwinter in East Africa and are classified by BirdLife International as endangered and near-threatened, respectively. To refine the African wintering ranges of these two species, we made an effort to collect as much distributional data as possible. We then used the available point-locality data to predict the wintering distributions using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based inductive modelling technique called BIOCLIM. For this purpose, we developed four environmental GIS layers that are presumed to reflect the environmental preferences of migrant birds. Our data showed that the known winter distribution of the Basra reed warbler was concentrated in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique, where it was usually found in dense vegetation growing in coastal scrub, woodland thickets, swamps, marshes, flooded pools and grasslands, and along ditches and edges of rivers, ponds, lagoons and lakes. The predicted winter distribution of this species includes most of East Africa but, given the habitat preferences of this species, is probably limited to low-lying areas near the coastline. The known winter distribution of the cinereous bunting is so far limited to Eritrea, where the species has been observed in October, November, February and March, in sparsely vegetated, sandy or rocky habitats on coastal plains and deserts. The predicted winter distribution of this species includes the plains and hills along the Red Sea coasts in southern Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan, as well as a few inland areas in Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya.Communicated by F. The Canadian Migration Monitoring Network consists of several fixed migration monitoring stations (MMS) that apply constant-effort protocols to track changes in the abundance of migratory birds. Such monitoring will be important for tracking long-term population trends of songbirds, especially for species breeding in remote areas such as the North American boreal forest. The geographical catchment sampled by individual MMS, however, remains largely unknown. Here, we used hydrogen isotope measurements (δD) of feathers of white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) moving through Delta Marsh MMS in Manitoba, Canada, to determine both wintering and breeding ground catchment areas monitored by this station. The δD of tail feathers, collected from spring and fall migrants delineated previous breeding or natal latitudes, ranging from the northern to the southern extremes of the western boreal forest. The δD values of head feathers grown on the wintering grounds and collected during spring migration revealed that individuals wintered in a broad region of the southeastern United States. The isotope data showed no relationship between estimated breeding/natal and wintering latitudes of white-throated sparrow populations. Stable isotope data provided little information on longitude. Band-encounter analyses, however, indicated a clear east–west segregation of these sparrows across Canada, supporting connectivity among breeding/natal and wintering longitudes over the entire scale of this species' range. Isotope analyses of multiple feather types representing different periods and geographic regions of the annual cycle can provide key information on migratory connectivity for species moving through dedicated MMS.  相似文献

We studied the prevalence and intensity of the haemosporidian blood parasite Haemoproteus payevskyi in great reed warblers at Lake Kvismaren (6 years) and Lake Segersj? (3 years) in Sweden. Based on microscopic inspection of slides from 282 adult birds, 20.6% showed infection of H. payevskyi in circulating red blood cells in at least 1 year. For parasite prevalence, there was no difference between years, sex, and age classes. However, parasite intensity was higher in females than in males, and this was most pronounced in 1-year-old birds. Individuals scored to carry parasites in year n were more likely to show parasite infection year n + 1 than birds scored to be parasite-free in year n . None of 99 juvenile birds examined at the breeding site in late summer, 4–9 weeks after hatching, showed infection of H. payevskyi. Parasite intensity in infected adult birds decreased in the course of the breeding season and no new or relapse infections were observed during this period. Thus, our data imply that in the great reed warbler, a long-distance migrant to tropical Africa, transmission of H. payevskyi occurs on wintering sites or at stopover sites during migration.  相似文献

The migrant Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) has a complex song repertoire, but such complexity makes quantitative comparison of songs between individual males both time consuming and challenging. We investigate a streamlined method of song analysis that uses 2-min records of song to provide simpler relative indices of repertoire size, including the use of capture-recapture and species-richness models. For each male, three attributes of song were determined: the song complexity, the total repertoire elements and the estimated repertoire size based on the Burnham and Overton jackknife method. Males with higher song indices tend to have greater nesting success, suggesting that even short records of song can indicate male quality to prospective female mates. Why should male Marsh Warblers have long and sustained songs when only 2-min records correlate with nesting success? Assuming that song advertises the quality of the male, and that the quality of such advertisement is sustained throughout the males song period, we argue that the female may need to have only brief exposure initially to that song to assess its quality and hence the quality of the male. More continuous periods of song may reinforce that initial choice by the female, and allow males to remain conspicuous to transient females moving around the territories of potential male mates.  相似文献

Stable carbon- (δ13C), nitrogen- (δ15N) and hydrogen (δD) isotope profiles in feathers of migratory Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus recaptured for 2 or more years in 6 successive years were examined to test whether the isotope profiles of individual warblers appeared to be consistent between years. Similar isotopic signatures in successive years suggested that individual birds tended to return and grow their feathers in Afro-tropical wintering habitats that generate similar δ13C, δ15N and δD signatures. Previous studies have shown that Great Reed Warblers exhibit strong natal and breeding philopatry, with most of the surviving birds returning to the breeding site. The present study of feather δ13C, δ15N and δD isotopic values demonstrate the year-to-year fidelity might also include the African moulting sites in this migratory species.  相似文献

Marine invasions are a worldwide problem that involves changes in communities and the acclimation of organisms to them. The invasive Chlorophyte Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is widespread in the Mediterranean and colonises large areas from 0 to 70 m in depth. The omnivorous fish Spondyliosoma cantharus presents a high frequency of occurrence of C. racemosa in the stomach contents at invaded areas (76.3%) while no presence of C. racemosa was detected in control areas. The isotopic composition of muscle differed significantly between invaded and non-invaded sites for δ13C (− 16.67‰ ± 0.09 and − 17.67‰ ± 0.08, respectively), δ15N (10.22‰ ± 0.22 and 9.32‰ ± 0.18, respectively) and the C:N ratio (2.01 ± 0.0002 and 1.96 ± 0.009, respectively). Despite the high frequency of occurrence of C. racemosa in the stomach contents of S. cantharus and its important contribution to the δ13C source (20.7% ± 16.2), the contribution of C. racemosa to the δ15N in S. cantharus food sources was very low (6.6% ± 5.8). Other invertebrate prey such as decapods and polychaetes were more important contributors to the δ15N source at both invaded and non-invaded sites. Activation of enzymatic pathways (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione-s-tranferase, 7-ethoxy resorufin O-de-ethylase) but not a significant increase in lipid peroxidation MDA (0.49 ± 0.01 nmol/mg prot at non-invaded and 0.53 ± 0.01 nmol/mg prot at invaded sites) was observed in S. cantharus individuals living in C. racemosa-invaded sites compared with control specimens. The low δ15N contribution values of C. racemosa by S. cantharus together with the toxicity demonstrated by the activation of the antioxidant defences and the important contribution of invertebrate prey to the δ15N could mean that the ingestion of C. racemosa by S. cantharus might be unintentional during the predation of invertebrate preys living underneath the entanglement of the C. racemosa fronds and stolons mats.  相似文献

Several species of planktonic foraminifera precipitate a final layer of calcite onto the shell surface immediately prior to gamete release at the end of the foraminifera life cycle. Here, we present the results of carbon-13, oxygen-18 and thermal labeling experiments conducted under high (HL) and low light (LL) regimes that vary symbiont photosynthetic activity. Mean experimental group data show that gametogenic (gam) calcite contributes between 4–17% and 14–20% to final shell mass for high and low light experiments respectively. These data indicate that past studies of gam calcite addition have overestimated the amount of gam calcite on foraminifera shells by ~ 30–55%. Calculations indicate that the mass of gam calcite added to the O. universa shell, 4.2 ± 2.0 μg and 4.0 ± 2.4 μg, is constant in the HL and LL groups respectively. We propose that the production of gam calcite may be the result of the discharge of a relatively constant-volume cytoplasmic pool of either Ca2+ or alkalinity (carbon pool) that increases the calcite saturation state in the microenvironment adjacent to the foraminifera shell just prior to gamete formation and release. Results from these experiments indicate that the geochemistry of thin-walled O. universa from deep sea sediments is composed of > 80% ontogenetic calcite that was precipitated in the primary, near surface habitat of this species.  相似文献

Hemocytic defense response of the migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fab.), to conidia of the white muscardine fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., was studied using phase-contrast photomicroscopy, hemocyte counting and hemocyte aggregation or nodule formation. Grasshoppers were injected with an aqueous suspension of conidia. Adherence of B. bassiana conidia to granulocytes occurred within 10 min and the conidia were encapsulated by these hemocytes 6 h postinjection. Hemocytopenia was accompanied by nodule formation after injection of B. bassiana conidia into grasshoppers. The conidia germinated within the nodules and grew into hyphal forms within the hemolymph 12 to 24 h postinjection. We conclude that B. bassiana competes well with nodule formation by hemocytes of M. sanguinipes and often escapes complete encapsulation.
Résumé Le mécanisme de défense du hémocyte de la sauterelle migratrice Melanoplus sanguinipes envers le champignon pathogène Beauveria bassiana a été etudié a l'aide du photomicroscope a contrase de phase, par dénombrement des hemocytes, ainsi que des nodules formées par l'agrégation des hémocytes. L'adhérence des conidies de B. bassiana aux hemocytes a été observée 10 min après l'injection et leur encapsulement après 1 h. Une baisse des taux d'hémocytes a fait suite a la formation de nodules apres l'injection de conidies dans les sauterelles. Après le déclin initial du taux des hémocytes, une hausse s'est produite dans les sauterelles auquelles on a injecté 106 conidies. Les conidies ont germé dans les nodules et la croissance du mycélium s'est produite dans l'hémolymphe 24 h après avoir injecté. Cette étude a revelé que M. sanguinipes peut exercer temporairement un mécanisme de défense cellulaire contre des conidies fongiques a une concentration de 106 conidies.

For many bird species, recovery of ringed individuals remains the best source of information about their migrations. In this study, we analyzed the recoveries of ringed European Hoopoe (Upupa epops) and the Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla) from 1914 to 2005 from all European ringing schemes. The aim was to define general migration directions and to make inferences about the winter quarters, knowing that hardly any recoveries are available from sub-Saharan Africa. For the autumn migration, there is evidence of a migratory divide for the Hoopoe in Central Europe, at approximately 10–12°E. Autumn migration directions of Wrynecks gradually change from SW to SE depending on the longitude (west to east) of the ringing place. In both species, only a few recoveries were available indicating spring migration directions, but they showed similar migration axes as for autumn migration, and hence no evidence for loop-migration. Due to a paucity of recoveries on the African continent, we can make only limited inferences about wintering grounds: extrapolating migration directions are only indicative of the longitude of the wintering area. The directions of autumn migration indicate a typical pattern observed in European long-distance migrants: west-European Hoopoes and Wrynecks are likely to winter in western Africa, while central- and east-European birds probably winter more in the east. Due to the migratory divide, for the Hoopoe, this phenomenon is more pronounced.  相似文献

Migratory connectivity plays an important role in conservation of long-distance migrant birds. Here, we study migratory links of dunlin (Calidris alpina), focusing on a stopover and wintering region (Portugal) where it is known that migration routes of dunlin from a broad geographic range (three subspecies) converge, and populations occur simultaneously or separated in time. We combine three methods (ringing recoveries, morphometrics and molecular genetics) to assess breeding origins and extent of temporal segregation of dunlin assemblages. Ringing recoveries show temporal separation of dunlin from different migration routes. Birds found in Portugal during August and September, migrating via Britain, reveal links to breeding areas in Iceland and Greenland. In October, a clear shift to more eastern migration routes occurs, with most Portuguese winter records from stopover sites along migration routes of populations from northern Scandinavia and Russia. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Portuguese dunlin was compared with breeding populations. Spring and autumn migrants in Portugal corresponded to C. a. schinzii and C. a. arctica populations, while the Portuguese winter population clearly differs by including mtDNA haplotypes of C. a. alpina. For genetically sexed individuals, we found significant differences in morphology (bill and tarsus length) supporting the temporal separation of populations/subspecies revealed by recoveries and mtDNA. Our results give evidence for migratory connectivity of dunlin populations between geographic areas previously not considered connected. They confirm the existence of clear differences in breeding origin between birds in Portugal at different times of year. These results are important in the consideration of future long-term conservation plans.  相似文献

Rates of development ofEpisyrphus balteatus (Diptera: Syrphidae) indicate that three generations are possible during the season. Only one develops in the wheat crop. Feeding activity is highest during the night. Functional response curves for newly hatched larvae, 1 and 5 day-old larvae were determined. The high rate of reproduction and the short feeding period makeE. balteatus an excellent exploiter of a temporary habitat: a cereal aphid colony.

Résumé Les durées de développement deE. balteatus dépendent de la température. L'incubation a duré 14.2 jours à 7.5°C et 1.59 jour à 25°C. Le développement larvaire jusqu'à la dernière défécation a demandé 35.8 jours à 7.5°C, et 10.1 jours à 20°C. Seule une génération peut se développer chaque année sur blé d'hiver, car la durée totale de l'ontogenèse, dans les conditions de température des champs, est comprise entre 30 et 45 jours. Les larves s'alimentent surtout la nuit. La prédation maximale à 20°C augmente avec l'âge de la larve, depuis 2.34 pucerons du troisième stade par jour pour une larve de syrphe néonate jusqu'à 5.04 pucerons du troisième stade quand les larves ont un jour. Les consommations les plus élevées, de 38.6 et 42.7 pucerons par nuit de 7 heures, ont été obtenues avec des larves de 4 à 5 jours, élevées à 21/13°C.A 20°C, le temps consacré à l'alimentation par des larves néonates de syrphes augmente avec la taille de la proie; il passe de 63.6 min pour des pucerons du premier stade à 131.2 min pour ceux du second stade. La relation entre le poids de la larve et le nombre de pucerons consommés est linéaire.E. balteatus a besoin, pour son développement, de moins deS. avenae que deA. fabae.

The distribution and abundance of acid phosphatase (AP) in hemolymph (HL), plasma (PM) and hemocyte lysate supernatant (HLS) of the migratory grasshopper,Melanoplus sanguinipes infected withBeauveria bassiana (strain GK 2016) has been examined. AP activity was determined at intervals from 30 min to 60 h postinjection of 2 μl of 1×108 conidia/ml per grasshopper. The enzyme was detected with the substrate β-glycerophosphate in sodium acetate acetic acid buffer form hemocytes (HC) and withp-nitrophenol phosphate sodium salt for HL, PM and HLS. In results of experiment 1 proportion of HC showing AP activity increased 1–2 h, then returned to normal after 4 h. However, inB. bassiana-injected grasshoppers, a second increase was noted 24 h later which was not seen in the Tween-80-injected insects. Uninjected controls showed no change with time in the proportion of HC with AP activity. Studies were also made of the distribution of AP activity in the HL, PM, and HLS. AP activity in HL appeared to vary with the sex of the grasshoppers. Females showed increase in AP activity in HL 18–24 h after injection withB. bassiana, whereas males only showed an increase 1 h after injection. Assay of HLS showed that the level of AP activity did not change significantly throughout the experiment. Changes in AP activity in PM, in bothB. bassiana — and Tween-80-injected insects (both sexes) paralleled those of the HL, indicating that the enzyme is released from the HC. The observations are discussed in terms of the possible role of AP in the immune response ofM. sanguinipes.  相似文献

The new genus Corylomyces, isolated from the surface of a hazelnut (Corylus avellana) in the French Pyrenees, is described, illustrated and compared with morphologically similar taxa. It is characterised by tomentose, ostiolate ascomata possessing long necks composed of erect to sinuose hairs, and one- or two-celled, opaque, lunate to reniform ascospores. Analyses of the SSU and LSU fragments rDNA gene sequences support its placement in the Lasiosphaeriaceae (Sordariales).  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that a magnetic pulse affected the orientation of passerine migrants for a short period only: for about 3 days, the birds’ headings were deflected eastward from their migratory direction, followed by a phase of disorientation, with the birds returning to their normal migratory direction after about 10 days. To analyze the processes involved in the fading of the pulse effect, migratory birds were subjected to a second, identical pulse 16 days after the first pulse, when the effect of that pulse had disappeared. This second pulse affected the birds’ behavior in a different way: it caused an increase in the scatter of the birds’ headings for 2 days, after which the birds showed normal migratory orientation again. These observations are at variance with the hypothesis that the magnetite-based receptor had been fully restored, but also with the hypothesis that the input of this receptor was ignored. They rather indicate dynamic processes, which include changes in the affected receptor, but at the same time cause the birds to weigh and rate the altered input differently. The bearing of these findings on the question of whether single domains or superparamagnetic particles are involved in the magnetite-based receptors is discussed.  相似文献

Strongyloides venezuelensis is a parasitic nematode that has been used as a model to study human and animal strongyloidiasis. In this study, we compared the sensitivity between traditional methodologies and PCR assay to characterize the dynamics of S. venezuelensis infection and its migration route in Lewis rats subcutaneously infected with 4000 L3. The dynamics of the infection was determined by counting the number of eggs and by detecting parasite deoxyribonucleic acid in faeces samples. Both techniques similarly detected the infection at day 6 after larvae inoculation. However, PCR performed with the genus primer showed higher sensitivity during the recovery phase. Histological analysis and PCR assay were then used to follow parasite tissue migration. S. venezuelensis migration route included the muscular fibers below the skin, the pulmonary alveoli and the small intestine vilosities. The sensitivity of these two techniques to detect parasite’s presence in these tissues was statistically similar.  相似文献

Recent DNA sequence analyses indicated that Nigrosabulum globosum is a cleistothecial representative of the Bionectriaceae in the Hypocreales, but morphological characters supporting this relationship are unknown. Using light and electron microscopy we followed the development of the ascomata of this species, from the formation of gametangia through to the development of mature ascospores, and observed a series of characters that confirmed its hypocrealean affinities. These included the formation of a gel-filled centrum during early stages of ascoma development, the subsequent appearance of hyaline peridial tissue enclosed within a layer we interpret as representing a melanized uniloculate stroma, apically derived paraphyses, and an ascogenous system that gives rise to asci that were both cylindrical to clavate and globose. Ascospores, previously reported to be smooth, were ornamented with a honeycomb-like reticulum and were able to germinate within the ascoma. The carbonaceous outer (stromatic) walls of the mature, grit-like cleistothecia indicate possible resistance to UV radiation and desiccation. Furthermore, the complement of germinated ascospores would enable mature ascomata to function as propagules that could quickly initiate new growth when transferred to fresh substrate. Our reexamination of N. globosum also provides data that support the hypothesized close relationship with other bionectriaceous, cleistothecial coprophiles, i.e., species of Hapsidospora, and Bulbithecium in particular.  相似文献
