Fry of Oncorliynclius mykiss were experimentally infected with the ectoparasites Gyroducrylus rolenirmensis and Gyroducrylus salnionis (Monogenea) and changes in mucous cell density in the epidermis covering the caudal fin were monitored during an ensuing 42 day epidemic. At 10° C, infections of G. colemanensis rose to a recorded peak of 90 to 1 15 worms on day 27 post-infection and then declined toward extinction. Intensity of G. salmonis remained low throughout the experiment. Infection produced no clinical signs of disease and did not influence fry growth or survival. However, infected fish did have a 50% reduction in the number of mucous cells in the epidermis of the fin. The changes were first detected on day 24 post-infection and became increasingly pronounced during the subsequent 1 day period when parasite numbers declined drastically. The study hypothesizes that parasite activity on the surface indirectly leads to reduction in mucous cells through disruption of cell dynamics within the epidermis.  相似文献

This paper addresses the design of a biomimetic fish robot actuated by piezoeeramic actuators and the effect of artificial caudal fins on the fish robot's performance. The limited bending displacement produced by a lightweight piezocomposite actuator was amplified and transformed into a large tail beat motion by means of a linkage system. Caudal fins that mimic the shape of a mackerel fin were fabricated for the purpose of examining the effect of caudal fm characteristics on thrust production at an operating frequency range. The thickness distribution of a real mackerel's fin was measured and used to design artificial caudal fins. The thrust performance of the biomimetic fish robot propelled by fins of various thicknesses was examined in terms of the Strouhal number, the Froude number, the Reynolds number, and the power consumption. For the same fm area and aspect ratio, an artificial caudal fin with a distributed thickness shows the best forward speed and the least power consumption.  相似文献

A new gobiid fish, Asterropteryx atripes, is described on the basis of eight specimens from Iriomote-jima Island, Ryukyu Islands, and El Nido, Philippines. It differs from its congeners by having the following combination of characters: 3rd spine of first dorsal fin long, filamentous, distal tip usually over end of 2nd dorsal fin base when appressed in both sexes; pelvic fins almost separated, innermost (=5th) segmented rays connected by rudimentary low membrane between bases, and no frenum; 4–7 short spines on posterior margin of preopercle (the uppermost spine usually just behind the cephalic sensory canal pore N); eye large, 32.3–35.8% of head length; enlarged haemal arches on 1st two caudal vertebrae; a distinct black band from posterior margin of eye to caudal fin base (indistinct in dark-phase individuals); black pelvic fin (vivid in dark-phase individuals); numerous minute bright blue spots on head and body in life; no distinct dark spots on head and body; iris entirely reddish-brown or dusky (bright white ventrally in pale-phase individuals) when alive or fresh, and entirely black in preservation, without white transverse bar on middorsal surface; hovering habit. The new species appears to be most closely related with the other only known hovering species, A. striata; the latter is readily distinguished from the former in having no long, filamentous dorsal spine; semitranslucent pelvic fin; and a series of small black spots along dorsal fin base and dorsal edge of caudal peduncle. Asterropteryx contains two distinct groups, and the monophyly of the genus is open to question. Received: March 19, 2000 / Revised: February 25, 2002 / Accepted: April 25, 2002  相似文献

The caudal fin represents a fundamental design feature of fishes and plays an important role in locomotor dynamics in fishes. The shape of caudal is an important parameter in traditional systematics. However, little is known about genes involved in the development of different forms of caudal fins. This study was conducted to identify and map quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting the length of caudal fin and the ratio between tail length and standard body length in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer). One F1 family containing 380 offspring was generated by crossing two unrelated individuals. One hundred and seventeen microsatellites almost evenly distributed along the whole genome were genotyped. Length of caudal fin at 90 days post-hatch was measured. QTL analysis detected six significant (genome-wide significant) and two suggestive (linkage-group-wide significant) QTL on seven linkage groups. The six significant QTL explained 5.5–16.6% of the phenotypic variance, suggesting these traits were controlled by multiple genes. Comparative genomics analysis identified several potential candidate genes for the length of caudal fin. The QTL for the length of caudal fin detected for the first time in marine fish may provide a starting point for the future identification of genes involved in the development of different forms of caudal fins in fishes.  相似文献

Body and fin shapes are chief determinants of swimming performance in fishes. Different configurations of body and fin shapes can suit different locomotor specializations. The success of any configuration is dependent upon the hydrodynamic interactions between body and fins. Despite the importance of body–fin interactions for swimming, there are few data indicating whether body and fin configurations evolve in concert, or whether these structures vary independently. The cichlid fishes are a diverse family whose well‐studied phylogenetic relationships make them ideal for the study of macroevolution of ecomorphology. This study measured body, and caudal and median fin morphology from radiographs of 131 cichlid genera, using morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods to determine whether these traits exhibit correlated evolution. Partial least squares canonical analysis revealed that body, caudal fin, dorsal fin, and anal fin shapes all exhibited strong correlated evolution consistent with locomotor ecomorphology. Major patterns included the evolution of deep body profiles with long fins, suggestive of maneuvering specialization; and the evolution of narrow, elongate caudal peduncles with concave tails, a combination that characterizes economical cruisers. These results demonstrate that body shape evolution does not occur independently of other traits, but among a suite of other morphological changes that augment locomotor specialization.  相似文献

A new loach, Oreonectes elongatus sp. nov. is described based on collections from Mulun Township, Huanjiang County, Guangxi in China. It is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: most elongate body (body depth/SL 8.62–10.68%), blind, a forked caudal fin, obvious adipose dorsal crest and ventral crest; entire body naked and de-pigmented. Although the new species has a similar distribution with O. macrolepis, it can be distinguished by scales (absent in O. elongatus vs. present in O. macrolepis), shape of snout (elongate vs. round), the opposite position of the dorsal and pelvic fins origins (behind vs. front). The new species shares the same possession of dorsal and ventral crests, a forked caudal fin, eyeless, naked body and incomplete lateral line with O. translucens, but can be distinguished from the latter by caudal fin crest (more developed and translucent in O. translucens), longer anterior nostril tube and barbel, extreme of pectoral fin reaching 2/3 of the distance between origin of pectoral and pelvic fins, more vertebrae (4 + 38–39 vs. 4 + 32).

Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus showed intraspecific morphological and behavioural differences dependent on the environment. Pelagic L. macrochirus had more fusiform bodies, a higher pectoral fin aspect ratio, a larger spiny dorsal fin area and pectoral fins located farther from the centre of mass than littoral L. macrochirus (P < 0·05). The shape of the body and pectoral fins, in particular, were suggestive of adaptation for sustained high-speed and economical labriform swimming. Littoral L. macrochirus had a deeper and wider body, deeper caudal fins and wider mouths than pelagic L. macrochirus (P < 0·05). Additionally, the soft dorsal, pelvic, anal and caudal fins of littoral L. macrochirus were positioned farther from the centre of mass (P < 0·05). The size and placement of these fins suggested that they will be effective in creating turning moments to facilitate manoeuvring in the macrophyte-dense littoral habitat.  相似文献

A new genus and species of the subfamily Bythitinae (Bythitidae),Hastatobythites arafurensis, is described on the basis of two specimens from the Arafura Sea. The genus is unique in the subfamily in having two anteriorlydirected spines, one on the frontal and one on the mesethmoid. It is also distinguishable from all other genera in the subfamily by the following combination of characters: head scales absent; squamation on body incomplete; maxillary expanded posteriorly; no thin pore-bearing skin flap over opercle; opercle thin, weak, without distinct spine; jaw teeth conical; vomerine and palatine teeth present; developed gill rakers on 1 st arch 3; pelvic fins with 1 ray in each; pectoral peduncle elongated, with 16 rays; caudal fin rays 12; branchiostegal, rays 8; precaudal vertebrae 15, with tips of 6th to 12th neural spines truncated.  相似文献

Body form can change across ontogeny, and can influence how animals of different sizes move and feed. Scaling data on live apex predatory sharks are rare and, therefore, we examined patterns of scaling in ontogenetic series of four sympatric shark species exhibiting a range of sizes, ecologies and life histories (tiger, bull, blacktip, and nurse shark). We evaluated 13 linear morphological variables and two areas (caudal and dorsal) that could influence both animal condition and locomotor performance. These measurements included dimensions of the dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins, as well as several dimensions of body circumference, and of the head. For all four species, the body axis (eye‐to‐eye, lateral span, frontal span, proximal span) scaled close to isometry (expected slope of 1.0). The two largest sharks (tiger and bull sharks) also showed significant negative allometry for elements of the caudal fin. We found significant negative allometry in the lengths of the upper lobe of the caudal fin (caudal fin 1) and the overall height of the caudal fin (caudal fin 2) in tiger and bull sharks, with slopes ranging from about 0.60 to 0.73. Further, tiger sharks showed negative allometry in caudal fin area. These results suggest that in terms of overall body dimensions, small sharks are roughly geometrically similar to large sharks, at least within the species we examined. However, juvenile tiger (and to a lesser extent bull sharks) are notable in having proportionately larger caudal fins compared to adult sharks. As the caudal fin contributes to generating thrust during forward locomotion, this scaling implies differences among adult and juvenile sharks in locomotor ability. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 114 , 126–135.  相似文献

The artificial fertilization of the puffer,Takifugu chrysops (Hilgendorf), was carried out at Sajima in Yokosuka City on May 22, 1984. Hatched larvae were reared for a period of about 150 days. The spawning period seems to extend from mid to late May in the eastern part of Sagami Bay. The eggs were spherical, pale milky white and semitransparent, demersal and adhesive in nature, measuring 1.32±0.04 mm in diamter, and with a cluster of small oil-globules. The incubation period was about 162 hours at a water temperature of 17.4 to 21.8°C. During embryonic development, the only pigment cells that appeared on the embryo were the black chromatophores. The newly hatched larvae measured from 2.72 to 3.06 mm TL, averaging 2.87±0.1 mm TL, and 22–23 (9 + 13?14) myomeres. At yolk absorption, 4 days after hatching, the larvae attained 3.64–3.79 mm TL. On the 11th day, postlarvae averaged 4.69±0.24 mm TL. Larval finfolds disappeared and rudimental dorsal, anal and caudal fins were formed. There were two large clusters of melanophores, one on the back, exteding from the mid-base of the dorsal fin to the caudal peduncle region, the other along the anal fin base. The color of the body began to turn pale green to brownish-orange and spinelike scales appeared on the belly. Eighteen days after hatching (7.02±0.27 mm TL), the caudal notochord began to turn up and a “constriction” appeared on the posterior margin of the caudal fin membrane. This notch moved upwards as the notochord upturning advances. The larvae attained full fin ray counts and reached the juvenile stage at 9.1-9.5 mm TL, 24 days after hatching. Characteristic black blotches on the back and specific brownish orange body color appeared at the stage of 20 mm TL, 24 days after hatching. The growth during the larval stage and early juvenile stage (24 to 51 days after hatching) were expressed by the following equations, wherey is total length (mm) andx is days after hatching.y 1=2.8424× 1.05099 (0≦x≦24)y 2 = 3.7872×1.0372x (24≦x≦51)  相似文献

Petroleuciscus ninae sp. nov. is described from the Büyük Menderes River drainage. The new species is distinguished by having a black lateral stripe from head to base of caudal fin, stripe distinct anteriorly and posteriorly, wider than eye diameter; numerous black pigments on anal‐fin rays; body depth at dorsal‐fin origin 27–30% standard length (LS); head width at posterior margin of eye 16–19% LS; and eye diameter smaller than snout length. Petroleuciscus ninae is also distinguished from other species in adjacent waters by having six fixed diagnostic nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial DNA coI barcode region.  相似文献

A new species of Astyanax from the Rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, Brazil, is described. This new species is distinguished from its congeners known to occur in Brazilian drainages by the presence of small bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Furthermore, the new species can be diagnosed by its colour pattern, which consists of a unique vertically elongated humeral blotch, a conspicuous dark drop‐shaped horizontal blotch over the caudal peduncle, tapering anteriorly and not extending to the median caudal‐fin rays, and by the absence of a conspicuous broad dark midlateral stripe. The new species differs further by having the greatest body depth just anterior to the dorsal‐fin origin, 32–35 perforated scales in the lateral line and a reduced number of branched anal‐fin rays (16–20). Apparently, the new species does not fit into any species complex of Astyanax. The occurrence of bony hooks on all fins of Astyanax is discussed.  相似文献

One of the most conspicuous characters of the ocean sunfishes, family Molidae, is the punctuation of the body by a deep, abbreviated, caudal fin-like structure extending vertically between the posterior ends of the dorsal and anal fins, termed the clavus by Fraser Brunner. Homology of the clavus has been a matter of debate since the first studies on molid anatomy in the early 1800s. Two hypotheses have been proposed: 1) It is a highly modified caudal fin; 2) It is formed by highly modified elements of the dorsal and anal fins. To resolve this homology issue, we studied the ontogeny of the molid vertebral column and median fins and compared it to that of a less morphologically derived gymnodont (see Part 1 of this study), a member of the family Tetraodontidae. We show that in molids the chorda never flexes during development, that the claval rays form from the posterior ends of the dorsal and anal fins toward the middle, thus closing the gap inward, and that elements of the molid clavus have an identical development and composition as the proximal-middle and distal radials of the regular dorsal and anal fins. We thus conclude that the molid clavus is unequivocally formed by modified elements of the dorsal and anal fin and that the caudal fin is lost in molids.  相似文献
