Golden hamsters and thirteen-lined ground squirrels were maintained individually in a thermal gradient (14°C to 33°C) for several weeks under a 14L: 10D light-dark cycle. Animals of both species showed robust daily rhythms of body temperature and locomotor activity with acrophases consistent with the habits of the species (diurnal acrophases in the diurnal squirrels and nocturnal acrophases in the nocturnal hamsters). Hamsters showed a robust daily rhythm of temperature selection 180° out of phase with the rhythms of body temperature and locomotor activity. Squirrels did not show a daily rhythm of temperature selection. These results raise the hypothesis that a daily rhythm of temperature selection is exhibited by nocturnal but not by diurnal endotherms.  相似文献

The phase shifting effect of red light on both the leaf movement rhythm, and on the rhythm of responsiveness of photoperiodic flower induction towards short light breaks (10 min red light), has been studied in Pharbitis nil, strain Violet, and comparisons between the two rhythms have been made. The phase angle differences between the rhythms after a phase shift with 2 or 6 h of red light given at different times during a long dark period were not constant. The results indicate the involvement of two different clocks controlling leaf movement and photoperiodic flower induction.Abbreviations DD continuous darkness - l:D x:y light/dark cycles with x hours of light and y hours of darkness - PPR rhythm of photoperiodic responsiveness towards light break  相似文献

Summary Male Japanese quail,Coturnix coturnix japonica, displayed day-night rhythms in their body temperature, with significantly higher temperatures during the day than at night. There were individual variations in both the temperatures attained and amplitude of the day-night rhythm of body temperature in the group-housed birds. Accompanying these diurnal patterns in body temperature there were day-night rhythms in the effects of intraperitoneal administrations of the opiate agonist, morphine (1.0 and 10 mg·kg-1) and prototypic opiate antagonist, naloxone (10 mg·kg-1) on colonic body temperature. In the daytime, the body temperature response profiles of quail treated with morphine were dependent on the initial body temperature of the bird. In those birds with the lower daytime body temperatures, morphine caused an initial hyperthermic response that was followed by a hypothermia and then a weak hyperthermia; whereas, in birds with the higher initial body temperatures there was a pronounced hypothermia followed by a marked hyperthermia. At night, morphine induced a hyperthermic response in all quail that was followed by a hypothermia. These effects of morphine were blocked by naloxone, with naloxone by itself significantly decreasing the daytime temperature of those quail with the higher initial body temperature. Naloxone had no significant effects on the nighttime body temperatures of any of the quail. These results show that there are day-night rhythms and individual differences in opiate sensitivity and modulation of body temperature in male quail. These findings also suggest that endogenous opioid systems are involved in either the generation and/or expression of the day-night rhythm of body temperature in quail.Abbreviations LD light-dark - T L low initial body temperatures - T H high initial body temperatures  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Locomotor, feeding, drinking, and oxygen consumption rhythms in adult virgin Acheta domesticus L. all appear to peak in the first half of the scotophase, be entrained cophasically by a LD 14:10 h cycle, have a lights-off Zeitgeber and persist in LL with a π c. 25 h for the locomotor rhythm and c. 23 h for the oxygen consumption rhythm. There is no evidence of these rhythms in last instar larvae. The onset of the locomotor rhythm requires 3 days at 30°C but 5–7 days at 25–28°C after the final ecdysis in virgins, indicating a temperature related development of the locomotor rhythm. Oxygen consumption rhythms are lacking in 2-day-old virgins but present in 8-day-old virgins. Feeding rhythms can be recorded in virgins as young as 2 days (before locomotor rhythm developed). Both oxygen consumption and locomotor rhythms persist during starvation. The results suggest that a central brain oscillator drives both feeding and locomotor rhythms independently, but that the oxygen consumption rhythm is derived from the metabolic demands associated with the other rhythms.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that there is an association between the pathophysiology of depression and a disturbance of circadian rhythms. Accordingly, attention has focused on the possible effects of antidepressants on circadian rhythms. In the present study, we examined the effects of chronic administration of two clinically effective antidepressant agents, imipramine and lithium, on several circadian rhythms in the rat. Activity, core body temperature, and drinking rhythms were assessed in constant darkness (DD) and light-dark (LD) conditions. In DD, lithium significantly lengthened the circadian period of the activity, temperature, and drinking rhythms, while imipramine had no effect. In LD, both drugs significantly delayed the phase of the activity rhythm, but did not change that of the other two rhythms. As a result, the phase-angle differences between the activity and temperature rhythms significantly increased. Neither lithium nor imipramine produced any effect on the resynchronization of these rhythms after an 8-h delay in the LD cycle. These results indicate that although both drugs produced different effects on the circadian period of individual rhythms, both caused a relative phase advance of the temperature rhythm as compared to the activity rhythm, and this effect may be related to the similarity in their antidepressant effects. We studied daily rhythmicity of body temperature (T b) before and during hibernation in Anatolian ground squirrels (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) under natural and laboratory conditions using surgically implanted temperature loggers. Under both conditions, robust daily T b rhythmicity with parameters comparable to those of other ground squirrel species was observed before but not during hibernation. Euthermic animals had robust daily T b rhythms with a mean of 37.0°C and a range of excursion of approximately 4°C. No T b rhythm was detected during torpor bouts, either because T b rhythmicity was absent or because the daily range of excursion was smaller than 0.2°C. The general patterns of hibernation that we observed in Anatolian ground squirrels were similar to those previously observed by other investigators in other species of ground squirrels.  相似文献

Summary The ability of social stimuli to act as entraining agents of circadian rhythms was investigated in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). In a first experiment, pairs of male hamsters (one of them enucleated and the other intact) were maintained under a light-dark (LD) cycle with a period of 23.3 h. Running-wheel activity was recorded to determine the effect of social interaction on the free-running circadian rhythm of activity. In several pairs, general activity and body temperature were also recorded. In all pairs the intact animals entrained to the LD cycle, whereas the activity rhythms of the enucleated animals free-ran with periods of approximately 24 h and showed no apparent sign of synchronization or relative coordination with the other member of the pair. In a second experiment, male hamsters maintained in constant darkness received pulses of social interaction, which have been reported to induce phase shifts of the activity rhythm. Consistent phase shifts in the running-wheel activity rhythm were not induced by the social pulses in our experiment. These results suggest strongly that social stimuli are not effective entraining agents of circadian rhythms in the golden hamster.Abbreviations CT circadian time - LD light-dark  相似文献

Summary Although pinealectomy or blinding resulted in loss of the clarity of the free-running rhythm of locomotor activity and body temperature and reduced the peak level of circulating melatonin rhythms to approximately a half in intact pigeons, neither pinealectomy nor blinding abolished any of these rhythms. However, when pinealectomy and blinding were combined, the rhythms of locomotor activity and body temperature disappeared in prolonged constant dim light, and melatonin concentration was reduced to the minimum level of detection. In order to examine the role of melatonin in the pigeon's circadian system, it was administered either daily or continuously to PX + EX-pigeons in LLdim. Daily administration of melatonin restored circadian rhythms of locomotor activity which entrained to melatonin injections, but continuous administration did not induce any remarkable change of locomotor activity. These results suggest that melatonin synthesized in the pineal body and the eye contributes to circulating melatonin and its rhythmicity is important for the control of circadian rhythms of locomotor activity and body temperature in the pigeon.Abbreviations LD Light-dark - LLdim constant dim light - LLbright constant bright light - PX pinealectomy - EX blinding - SCN suprachiasmatic nucleus  相似文献

The effects of vinorelbine (VRL) on the circadian rhythms in body temperature and locomotor activity were investigated in unrestrained B6D2F1 mice implanted with radio-telemetry transmitters. A single intravenous VRL dose (24 or 12 mg/kg) was given at 7 h after light onset (HALO), a time of high VRL toxicity, and resulted in transient suppression of temperature and activity circadian rhythms in mice kept in light-dark (LD) 12h:12h. Such suppression was dose-dependent. It occurred within 1-5 d after VRL dosing. Recovery of both rhythms was partially complete within 5 d following the high dose and within 2 or 3 d after the low dose and was not influenced by suppression of photoperiodic synchronization by housing in continuous darkness. Moreover, VRL induced a dose-dependent relative decrease in amplitude and phase shift of the temperature circadian rhythm. The mesor and amplitude of the activity rhythm were markedly reduced following the VRL administration. The relevance of VRL dosing time was studied in mice housed in LD 12h:12h. Vinorelbine was injected weekly (20 mg/kg/injection) for 3 wk at 6 or 18 HALO. Vinorelbine treatment ablated the rest-activity and temperature rhythms 3-6 d after each dose, with fewer alterations after VRL dosing at 18 HALO compared to 6 HALO, especially for the body temperature rhythm. There was at least partial recovery 1 wk after dosing, suggesting the weekly schedule of drug treatment is acceptable for therapeutic purposes. Our findings demonstrate that VRL can transiently, yet profoundly, alter circadian clock function. Vinorelbine-induced circadian dysfunction may contribute to the toxicokinetics of this and possibly other anticancer drugs.  相似文献

Periodogram techniques on detrended data were used to determine the incidence of Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection on the distribution of the core temperature of rats and the expression of temperature rhythms. In such an animal model, sudden episodic hypothermic bouts were described. These episodes of hypothermia are used here as temporal marks for the purpose of performing punctual comparisons on temperature organization. The experiment was conducted on 10 infected and 3 control Sprague‐Dawley rats reared under a 24 h light‐dark cycle. Core temperature was recorded continuously throughout the experiment, until the animals' death. Temperature distributions, analyzed longitudinally across the full duration of the experiment, exhibited a progressive shift from a bimodal to unimodal pattern, suggesting a weakening of the day/night core temperature differences. After hypothermic events, the robustness of the circadian rhythm substantially weakened, also affecting the ultradian components. The ultradian periods were reduced, suggesting fragmentation of temperature generation. Moreover, differences between daytime and nighttime ultradian patterns decreased during illness, confirming the weakening of the circadian component. The results of the experiments show that both core temperature distribution and temperature rhythm were disrupted during the infection. These disruptions worsened after each episode of hypothermia, suggesting an alteration of the temperature regulatory system.  相似文献

The insect moulting hormones, viz. the ecdysteroids, regulate gene expression during development by binding to an intracellular protein, the ecdysteroid receptor (EcR). In the insect Rhodnius prolixus, circulating levels of ecdysteroids exhibit a robust circadian rhythm. This paper demonstrates associated circadian rhythms in the abundance and distribution of EcR in several major target tissues of ecdysteroids, but not in others. Quantitative analysis of immunofluorescence images obtained by confocal laser-scanning microscopy following the use of anti-EcR has revealed a marked daily rhythm in the nuclear abundance of EcR in cells of the abdominal epidermis, brain, fat body, oenocytes and rectal epithelium of Rhodnius. This EcR rhythm is synchronous with the rhythm of circulating hormone levels. It free-runs in continuous darkness for several cycles, showing that EcR nuclear abundance is under circadian control. Circadian control of a nuclear receptor has not been shown previously in any animal. We infer that the above cell types detect and respond to the temporal signals in the rhythmic ecdysteroid titre. In several cell types, the rhythm in cytoplasmic EcR peaks several hours prior to the EcR peak in the nucleus each day, thereby implying a daily migration of EcR from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. This finding shows that EcR is not a constitutive nuclear receptor, as has previously been assumed. In the brain, rhythmic nuclear EcR has been found in peptidergic neurosecretory cells, indicating a potential pathway for feedback regulation of the neuroendocrine system by ecdysteroids, and also in regions containing circadian clock neurons, suggesting that the circadian timing system in the brain is also sensitive to rhythmic ecdysteroid signals. Fabry disease is a progressive disease characterized by an enzymatic deficiency of acid alpha-galactosidase and glycosphingolipids storage within the lysosomes. The disease has two phenotypes: classic and nonclassic. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common sign reported by patients and can be caused by a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. Activity and rest cycle, variation of body temperature and melatonin biosynthesis are known rhythmicity markers. In the face of these evidences, our goal was to evaluate the rhythmic profile in Fabry’s disease patients using rhythmicity markers. For this purpose, we recruited 17 patients diagnosed with Fabry disease (11 classic and 6 nonclassic variant) that answered the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Morningness–Eveningness questionnaire adapted from Horne and Ostberg; recorded activity and body temperature rhythms by an actigraphy during at least 10 days and collected urine to assess 6-sulfatoxymelatonin excretion load during the day (from the second urine in the morning until 7 p.m.) and night (starting from 7 p.m. until the first urine in the morning of the following day). We observed that control subjects presented higher excretion load of 6-sulfatoxymelatonin during the night (p < 0.05, d = 7.8), as expected. Patients with the nonclassic variant presented an inversion on 6-sulfatoxymelatonin daily profile (p < 0.05, d = 3.8) and there was no difference between the day and night profile of classic variant patients when compared to the other two groups. Patients with the classic variant also presented temperature period greater than 24 hours (p < 0.05, d = 2.0). Therefore, we came to the conclusion that there is an alteration in the circadian rhythms in Fabry disease patients, evidenced by modifications in the 6-sulfatoxymelatonin daily profile and in the body temperature rhythm period.  相似文献

In all bee colonies of the Meliponinae subfamily, activity inside the nest is temporally organized around the oviposition by the queen, assisted by nurse bees. This class is constituted by young bees that remain inside the nest. In a colony of Scaptotrigona aff depilis, the oviposition cycle occurs in a 3-hour period. The foragers are older bees that collect food for the colony in the field. Other tasks in the nest are performed by workers of ages intermediate between nurses and foragers. With the aim of studying activity rhythms, foragers were kept under constant light, with food constantly available and no flight restriction. The results showed that, although inside the nest the prevailing period is 3 hours, the activity of the foragers is a circadian rhythm, synchronized by the light/dark cycle and probably influenced by other environmental cycles as temperature and the availability of food sources.  相似文献

When organisms are maintained under constant conditions of light and temperature, their endogenous circadian rhythms free run, manifesting their intrinsic period. The phases of these free-running rhythms can be shifted by stimuli of light, temperature, and drugs. The change from one free-running steady state to another following a perturbation often involves several transient cycles (cycles of free-running rhythm drifting slowly to catch up with the postperturbation steady state). Although the investigation of oscillator kinetics in circadian rhythms of both insects and mammals has revealed that the circadian pacemaker phase shifts instantaneously, the phenomenon of transient cycles has remained an enigma. We probed the phases of the transient cycles in the locomotor activity rhythm of the field mouse Mus booduga, evoked by a single light pulse (LP), using LPs at critically timed phases. The results of our experiments indicate that the transient cycles generated during transition from one steady state to another steady state do not represent the state of the circadian pacemaker (basic oscillator) controlling the locomotor activity rhythm in Mus booduga. The relationship between the circadian and homeostatic control of body temperature was studied in golden hamsters maintained under a 14:10 LD cycle. Telemetric records of body temperature showed that body temperature oscillates daily with a low phase during the light section of the LD cycle and a high phase during the dark section. The low phase of the temperature rhythm was found to start two hours after lights on and to last about 8 hours. The high phase was found to start immediately after lights off and to last about 8 hours also. Metabolic heat production was measured by indirect calorimetry during the high phase and the low phase of the body temperature rhythm. Heat production in a thermoneutral environment was higher during the high phase of the body temperature rhythm than during the low phase, but cold-induced thermogenesis was greater during the low phase than during the high phase. This finding suggests that the autonomic thermoregulatory system is more responsive to cold stress during the low phase than during the high phase. Consequently, the daily oscillation of body temperature cannot be explained by an elevation of the thermoregulatory set point during the high phase of the rhythm. The homeostatic and circadian control of body temperature seem to be exerted separately from each other.  相似文献

The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the utility of the mammalian swine model under simulated intensive care unit (sICU) conditions and mechanical ventilation (MV) for assessment of the trajectory of circadian rhythms of sedation requirement, core body temperature (CBT), pulmonary mechanics (PM) and gas exchange (GE). Data were collected prospectively with an observational time-series design to describe and compare circadian rhythms of selected study variables in four swine mechanically ventilated for up to seven consecutive days. We derived the circadian (total variance explained by rhythms of τ between 20 and 28?h)/ultradian (total variance explained by rhythms of τ between 1 and <20?h) bandpower ratio to assess the robustness of circadian rhythms, and compare findings between the early (first 3 days) and late (subsequent days) sICU stay. All pigs exhibited statistically significant circadian rhythms (τ between 20 and 28?h) in CBT, respiratory rate and peripheral oxygen saturation, but circadian rhythms were detected less frequently for sedation requirement, spontaneous minute volume, arterial oxygen tension, arterial carbon dioxide tension and arterial pH. Sedation did not appear to mask the circadian rhythms of CBT, PM and GE. Individual subject observations were more informative than group data, and provided preliminary evidence that (a) circadian rhythms of multiple variables are lost or desynchronized in mechanically ventilated subjects, (b) robustness of circadian rhythm varies with subject morbidity and (c) healthier pigs develop more robust circadian rhythm profiles over time in the sICU. Comparison of biological rhythm profiles among sICU subjects with similar severity of illness is needed to determine if the results of this pilot study are reproducible. Identification of consistent patterns may provide insight into subject morbidity and timing of such therapeutic interventions as weaning from MV.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to monitor the daily rhythm of rectal and cutaneous temperatures together with the changes in the serum levels of mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in equine and goat species. On five gelding horses and five female goat rectal and cutaneous temperatures were recorded at 4 h intervals for a 48 h period. At the same time points blood samples were collected from each animal. Daily rhythms of rectal and cutaneous temperatures were observed in both species, in both day of monitoring. Mesor value of rectal temperature was statistically higher of about 4 °C than cutaneous temperature, and acrophase was postponed of about 2 h in both day of monitoring and in both species. UCP1 did not show daily rhythmicity in horses and goats. We can speculate that the thermogenesis due to thermal system is auxiliary to keeping the body temperature daily rhythm.  相似文献

It has been shown by telemetry that uninfected New Zealand Albino rabbits exhibit a diurnal rhythm in body temperature. The maximum temperature occurred just before or during the dark period, and the lowest temperature during the light period. Preliminary data also suggested that there is a diurnal rhythm in water consumption, fecal and urine output. After these rabbits were infected with the African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, body temperature was significantly decreased. The diurnal rhythm in body temperature was maintained; however, the period of maximum temperature shifted from the dark into the light. Although the evidence is very preliminary, it is also suggested that the diurnal rhythms in water uptake, fecal and urine output were also maintained. Finally, the shift in the high and low time points of the daily body temperature curve during infection were reversed after chemotherapy, and the original (uninfected) curved restored.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess if a simple motor task, one that required muscle contractions well below maximum, showed evidence of circadian changes and time‐awake. The task consisted of using a larger counter to flick a number of smaller counters to land as near as possible to the center of a target. The closer a counter landed next to the center of the target, the higher the score obtained. Two distances from the target were used (long and short), and 20 counters were flicked at each distance. The task was performed by 72 diurnally active healthy participants at six test sessions distributed every 4 h throughout the day (08:00 h, 12:00 h, … , 04:00 h), so covering a circadian cycle. When performing the sessions, subjects had been awake for about 1, 4, … , 20 h. Before each test session, sublingual temperature was measured, and estimates of the individual's fatigue and alertness were made. Clear normally phased circadian rhythms (p<0.0001) in oral temperature and alertness with mean peak time (i.e., acrophases of 17.2 h and 15.9 h, respectively) and fatigue (i.e., mean acrophase of 3.4 h) were detected. The total scores for both the long and short distances also showed circadian rhythms that peaked slightly before the temperature rhythm (by 2.31±0.91 h and 1.77±0.77 h, mean±SE, respectively), and the number of occasions that the target was missed altogether showed rhythms that were in anti‐phase (mean acrophases=3.8 h and 4.1 h for the long and short distances, respectively) to that of total scores (mean acrophases=16.0 h and 15.2 h for the long and short distances, respectively). With the long and, particularly, short distances, there were generally significant correlations (r<0.0005) between both the measures of accuracy (total score and number of misses) and body temperature and time‐awake. The accuracy of performance at this task seems to show circadian and time‐awake effects, and so makes it of potential value in protocols where repetitive measurements during the course of a day are required.  相似文献

In the subtropical finch, spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) circannual rhythms (of gonads, fattening, feeding) have been demonstrated in an information-free environment of continuous illumination (LL), rendering it an ideal model for research on the physiology of the circannual clock. In an attempt to understand the involvement, if any, of the circadian system in the genesis of circannual rhythms, we studied the effect of pinealectomy (LL 15 lux) and strong continuous illumination (LL 300 lux), both known to abolish circadian rhythms, on the circadian perch-hopping rhythm and on the circannual rhythm of reproduction and fattening in the same birds. While both pinealectomy and LL 300 lux treatments abolished the circadian rhythm of motor activity, they had no effect on the circannual rhythms of gonadal size and fattening. If the endogenous circadian rhythm in perch-hopping can be taken to reflect the circadian clock mechanism associated with gonadal functioning, present results suggest that circannual rhythm of reproduction in spotted munia is independent of circadian events.  相似文献
