Two experiments were completed to examine effects of inclusion of a yeast culture (YC) to a diet based on barley grain and wheat straw on digestibility, growth and meat traits of Awassi lambs and Shami goat kids. Experiment 1 studied effects of YC on apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and N balance in sheep, while experiment 2 studied effects on growth performance and carcass composition of lambs and kids. The same diet was used in both experiments and the YC was added to the diet of treated groups at the level of 12.6 kg YC/tonne of diet. Addition of YC had no effect on apparent digestibility of DM, CP and NDF, but it increased (P<0.05) digestibility of OM and ADF. No differences occurred in N intake, output or retention. Addition of YC did not affect growth rate, or DM intake, in both lambs and kids. YC supplementation to lambs reduced hot carcass weight, cold dressing proportion and total muscle/bone ratio, but increased empty digestive tract weight. There were no changes in back fat thickness, intermuscular fat of the leg muscle, and weights and proportions of carcass cuts. Measures of kids’ carcass characteristics and quality also did not differ. Only cuts of leg and shoulder differed (P<0.05) when calculated as a proportion of the whole carcass cut. Results show that YC supplementation increased digestibility with no effect on growth, feed intake or feed conversion ratio of fattening lambs and kids. However, YC supplementation reduced meat/bone ratio and tissue protein content, but increased fat content in carcasses of fattening Awassi lambs, but not in fattened Shami kids. 相似文献

This study was carried out to compare behavioural activities of Awassi lambs in cafeteria feeding system with conventional feeding (control) that animals fed concentrate. Sixteen, 3-month-old male lambs were housed individually for 42 days. The main effect was on the feeding systems, cafeteria and control. Cafeteria lambs ( n=8) were offered the main ingredients (barley, cotton seed meal (CSM), wheat bran and alfalfa straw), while control animals ( n=8) were fed a single diet (48% barley, 22% cottonseed meal, 18% wheat bran, 10% alfalfa and 2% vitamin–mineral mixture; having 2467 Kcal ME and 161 g kg −1) with the same main ingredients with slightly higher nutrient content for growth. Food and water intakes were recorded daily, while behavioural observations were recorded twice a week for a period of 1 h at 5 min intervals at 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, 22:00, 01:00, 04:00, 07:00 and 10:00 h after the initiation of daily feeding. After every 5 min, each lamb was monitored to determine its eating, ruminating, drinking, walking, standing, playing, resting and other activities.Cafeteria lambs selected a diet that matched their growth requirement as did control lambs. However, cafeteria lambs ate more ( P<0.01). Cafeteria animals preferred cotton seed meal (42.4%) to barley (32.9%) without changing their water intake, final live weight and daily gain ( P>0.05). Cafeteria lambs also had higher rates of eating (22% versus 19%, P<0.01), ruminating (24% versus 23%, P>0.05) and resting (29% versus 23%, P<0.01) than the control lambs. On the other hand, cafeteria lambs spent less time standing (19% versus 25%, P<0.01) and walking (1.5% versus 2.1%, P<0.01) compared with control animals. In conclusion, cafeteria lambs selected a diet that matched their presumed biological (behavioral and nutritional) needs without changing their growth performance. 相似文献

Eight castrated male lambs (35 ± 4 kg live weight), fed a basal diet of kikuyu grass hay, were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effect of supplemental feeding frequency and source of rumen degradable N on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and microbial protein yield. Treatments were supplementation with cassava meal plus calcium caseinate or cassava meal plus urea offered at a rate of 7 g/kg live weight daily in one or two meals per day. Lambs were fed twice daily in such manner to allow ad libitum comsumption of forage. There was significant feeding frequency by N source interaction on variables of intake. In general, intake of feed components was higher ( P ≤ 0.05) by lambs offered the caseinate-supplement twice daily over intake observed in lambs given the others diet treatments. Digestibility of feed components was neither affected by supplemental N source (DM, P = 0.541; OM, P = 0.585; NDF, P = 0.828) nor by feeding frequency (DM, P = 0.122; OM, P = 0.175; NDF, P = 0.591). Urinary excretion of N increased ( P ≤ 0.05) in lambs supplemented twice daily whereas N retention was similar for all treatments (N source, P = 0.748; feeding frequency, P = 0.418). Microbial protein entering into the small intestine was affected by the interaction between feeding frequency and N source such as an increasing ( P < 0.10) in this variable was observed when lambs received the caseinate but not the urea supplement twice daily. Efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, however, was not affected by treatments (N source, P = 0.588; feeding frequency, P = 0.334). Rumen pH averaged 6.70 and it was neither affected by N source ( P = 0.827) nor by feeding frequency ( P = 0.740). Ruminal concentration of ammonia N was not affected by feeding frequency ( P = 0.144) while it increased ( P < 0.05) when urea rather than caseinate was the supplemental N source (mean of 7.61 mg/dl vs. 6.00 mg/dl). Concentration of sugars in rumen fluid was higher ( P ≤ 0.05) in lambs supplemented once a day compared to twice daily (mean of 49.4 mg/dl vs. 34.4 mg/dl) for both N sources. A significant ( P ≤ 0.05) N source by feeding frequency interaction effect was observed for ruminal concentrations of α-amino N compounds. In urea treatment α-amino N concentration increased ( P ≤ 0.05) in lambs receiving the supplement twice daily compared to once a day (mean of 4.59 mg/dl vs. 3.70 mg/dl) while in caseinate treatment it was higher ( P ≤ 0.05) in lambs offered the supplement in one meal per day compared to twice daily (mean of 5.29 mg/dl vs. 4.07 mg/dl). In conclusion, for ruminants fed a tropical grass-based diet, starch-rich supplement containing non-protein N as N source may be offered only once a day whereas the supply of nutrients may be improved if degradable true protein is included as N source and supplement is offered in two meals per day. 相似文献

A total of eight Simmental heifers (114 ± 3.2 days old and weighing 118 ± 3.8 kg BW) were used to study the effects of feeding method on intake and animal behaviour in a crossover design experiment. Treatments consisted of feeding concentrate and chopped barley straw as (1) choice (CH; concentrate and straw in separate feedbunks) or (2) total mixed ration (TMR; concentrate and straw in one feedbunk). Feeds were offered on an ad libitum basis, but always maintaining a concentrate to straw ratio of 90 to 10. The experiment was performed in two 21-day periods, and sampling was carried out in the last week of each period. At the end of each period, treatment was changed for heifers; hence, the final number of animals per treatment was eight. Intake was recorded over 7 consecutive days. BW was recorded at the beginning and the end of the experiment and on day 21 of each experimental period. Barley straw was coarsely chopped with a chopping machine. Once chopped, all the straw was handled for particle size separation using the 2-screen Penn State Particle Separator and only material of more than 8 mm was used to feed the heifers. Animal behaviour was video-recorded for 24 h on day 2 and day 6 of each experimental period. Concentrate intake and total dry matter intake of heifers fed with the CH feeding method were higher ( P < 0.01 and P < 0.05) than when fed with TMR (5.1 and 5.3 v. 4.7 and 5.0 kg dry matter (DM)/day, respectively). Conversely, barley straw was consumed in higher amounts in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method (0.3 v. 0.2 kg DM/day, respectively; P = 0.001). The total NDF intake was similar in both treatments. In contrast, NDF intake from barley straw and physically effective NDF intake were higher in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method than when fed with CH. Feeding method used to feed heifers did not affect the consumption of the different kinds of barley straw particles and eating and drinking behaviours but affected ruminating behaviour. Heifers fed TMR spent more time ruminating than heifers fed concentrate and barley straw separately (376 v. 287 min/day, respectively; P < 0.01). TMR as the feeding method in intensive beef production systems could be a good approach to promote roughage intake. 相似文献

Feeding a high concentrate (HC) diet is a widely used strategy for supporting high milk yields, yet it may cause certain metabolic disorders. This study aimed to investigate the changes in milk production and hepatic metabolism in goats fed different proportions of concentrate in the diet for 10 weeks. In total, 12 mid-lactating goats were randomly assigned to an HC diet (65% concentrate of dry matter, n=6) or a low concentrate (LC) diet (35% concentrate of dry matter, n=6). Compared with LC, HC goats produced greater amounts of volatile fatty acids and produced more milk and milk lactose, fat and protein ( P<0.01). HC goats showed a greater concentration of ATP, NAD, plasma non-esterified fatty acids and hepatic triglycerides than LC goats ( P<0.05). Real-time PCR results showed that messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of gluconeogenic genes, namely, glucose-6-phosphatase, pyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase were significantly up-regulated and accompanied greater gluconeogenic enzyme activities in the liver of HC goats. Moreover, the expression of hepatic lipogenic genes including sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c, fatty acid synthase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase mRNA was also up-regulated by the HC diet ( P<0.05). HC goats had greater hepatic phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase than LC ( P<0.05). Furthermore, histone-3-lysine-27-acetylation contributed to this elevation of gluconeogenic gene expression. These results indicate that lactating goats fed an HC diet for 10 weeks produced more milk, which was associated with up-regulated gene expression and enzyme activities involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis. 相似文献

It is known that niacin itself is not necessary in rats when tryptophan is given in adequate amounts, because rats can biosynthesize niacin from tryptophan. In our experiment, young rats were fed on a 20%, 40%, 60%, or 70% casein diet with or without niacin. The rats fed on the 20%, 40%, and 60% casein diets did not require niacin for growth, but the rats fed on the 70% casein diet needed it. This phenomenon was attributed to the supposition that liver aminocarboxymuconate-semialdehyde decarboxylase activities increased according with the dietary casein levels. The conversion ratio of tryptophan-niacin in rats fed on the 70% casein diet became extremely low, and then the rats needed niacin. 相似文献

Twenty four Awassi lambs (mean BW 24.4 kg) were used in a two periods experiment to measure maintenance (zero growth) and growth requirements of metabolizable energy (ME). During the pre-treatment period (period 1, 3 weeks) all lambs were maintained at a constant level of feed intake (2% BW). During the treatment period (period 2, 10 weeks) the lambs were divided into four equal groups and fed different amounts (2, 3, 4 and 5% of BW). Six additional lambs of similar BW and age were killed at the beginning of the experiment to compare final empty body weight (FEBW) with initial body weight (IBW). Twelve lambs, divided into four equal groups were fed the experimental diet in the same amounts as in the growth experiment (period 2) to determine the digestibility of energy. Energy requirement for maintenance (EM) was measured by both constant weight technique, using data collected during period 1, and regression technique by regressing ME intake on body weight gain (BWG) and empty body weight gain (EBWG). EM measured during the constant weight period (pre-treatment) and overall experimental period (pre-treatment plus treatment periods) were 0.482 and 0.466 MJ of ME per kg M0.75 per day. Predicted energy requirements for growth (Eg) calculated from equations derived during the treatment period were 0.433, 0.623, 0.782, 0.910 and 1.007 (MJ per kg M0.75 per day) for the growth rates 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 (g per day) respectively. It is concluded to be more appropriate to use the values derived during the overall experimental period for maintenance and the overall treatment period for growth as they are most applicable to production situations. 相似文献

An exclusively milk formula diet stunted the growth of mice immediately following weaning. Milk-fed mice displayed a low-frequency profile of exploratory behavior, while pellet-fed mice showed high-frequency exploration. In contrast to exploratory behavior, feeding behavior did not differ significantly between milk- and pellet-fed mice. Despite showing low-frequency exploratory behavior, mice on an exclusively milk formula diet showed no difference in behavioral activities analyzed by an automatic hole-board apparatus compared to pellet-fed mice. These results suggest that the growth stunt caused by an exclusively milk formula diet retards the acquisition of active exploratory behavior without affecting the emotional state of mice. 相似文献

Adaptive capacities of Baladi goats facing situations of food restrictions and re-feeding during lactation have been studied. Three diets were tested: mountain natural rangelands during early lactation, agricultural pastures during mid-lactation and indoor stall feeding during late lactation. Body weight (BW), body condition (BCS) and plasma metabolites (NEFA) as well as milk production (milk yield, milk fat and milk protein contents) were measured in the different feeding situations. Effect of late lactation re-feeding on reproduction was assessed through kids’ birth weight and weight gain from day 0 till day 60 of age. Results showed that on rangelands, goats’ body condition degraded, with initially fat goats loosing more weight and being subject to a greater reserves mobilization than lean ones. These expressed an adaptive behaviour through increasing their daily feed intake and by an intense body reserves replenishment following their transfer to the agricultural pastures and indoor feeding. In late lactation, even goats kept on agricultural pastures showed a similar reconstitution, showing the high priority of body reserves replenishment during late lactation whatever the feeding level. The milk rebounds observed showed a good reactivity from the Baladi goat in response to a feed improvement either on agricultural pasture or indoor. At the end of lactation the milk yield decreased in all feeding situations proving the priority given by the Baladi goats to the body reserves replenishment over the milk production in order to ensure the next cycle. However, even if there was no difference in kids’ birth weights, kids from stall-fed dams had higher weight gains between 0 and 60 days of age when compared to those from underfed ones. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of salinomycin (SL) and feeding on whole body glucose kinetics in sheep fed a high-concentrate diet (25% orchardgrass hay and 75% commercial concentrate). Four adult sheep were fed the diet with or without 20 mg x kg(-1) diet of SL once daily for each 3 wk. The rates of glucose entry and utilization were determined before and during 3 h after feeding using a [ (13)C(6)] glucose dilution approach. Ruminal characteristics and concentrations of blood volatile fatty acids (VFA) and plasma glucose and insulin were also measured. Metabolizable energy intake was unaffected (P = 0.22) with SL. Salinomycin decreased (P = 0.06) the ratio of acetate to propionate in rumen fluid. Salinomycin increased (P = 0.01) both rates of entry and utilization of glucose, but did not affect (P > 0.10) concentrations of blood VFA or plasma glucose or insulin. Feeding caused gradual increases in concentrations of blood acetate (P < 0.01) and propionate (P = 0.01), a transient increase in plasma insulin concentration (P = 0.05), a transient decrease in plasma glucose concentration (P < 0.01), and persistent increases in both rates of glucose entry (P < 0.01) and utilization (P < 0.01). No SL x feeding interaction was observed (P > 0.10) on any measurements. We conclude that SL and feeding would have an additive effect on both rates of glucose entry and utilization without modifications with SL to feeding responses of peripheral concentrations of blood VFA, plasma glucose and insulin. 相似文献

Deficits in satiation signaling during obesogenic feeding have been proposed to play a role in hyperphagia and weight gain in animals prone to become obese. However, whether this impaired signaling is due to high fat (HF) feeding or to their obese phenotype is still unknown. Therefore, in the current study, we examined the effects of CCK-8 (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 μg/kg) on suppression of food intake of HF-fed obese prone (OP) and resistant (OR) rats. Additionally, we determined the role of endogenous CCK in lipid-induced satiation by measuring plasma CCK levels following a lipid gavage, and tested the effect of pretreatment with devazepide, a CCK-1R antagonist on intragastric lipid-induced satiation. Finally, we examined CCK-1R mRNA levels in the nodose ganglia. We show that OP rats have reduced feeding responses to the low doses of exogenous CCK-8 compared to OR rats. Furthermore, OP rats exhibit deficits in endogenous CCK signaling, as pretreatment with devazepide failed to abolish the reduction in food intake following lipid gavage. These effects were associated with reduced plasma CCK after intragastric lipid in OP but not OR rats. Furthermore, HF feeding resulted in downregulation of CCK-1Rs in the nodose ganglia of OP rats. Collectively, these results demonstrate that HF feeding leads to impairments in lipid-induced CCK satiation signaling in obese-prone rats, potentially contributing to hyperphagia and weight gain. 相似文献

In the course of a 4-day expedition to the island of Nosy Mangabe in northeastern Madagascar, two aye-ayes were separately
sighted, observed feeding and moving, and photographed. These observations confirm recent reports of the continued existence
of aye-ayes on the island following the translocation of nine individuals from the mainland in 1967. An adult male aye-aye
was seen feeding on the gall-like growths covering much of the bark surface of an Afzelia bijuga tree and eating the insects these contained. The same individual also fed briefly on shoots of the bamboo Bambusa vulgaris. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different inclusion levels of semi-purified glycerine in the diet of feedlot lambs on feeding behaviour, nutrient intake and digestibility, carcass characteristics, meat quality and in vitro degradability. Thirty-two Dorper × (Texel × Suffolk) crossbred intact male lambs (22.2 ± 5.51 kg) were fed glycerine (90% purity) at 0, 120, 240 or 360 g/kg dry matter (DM) in a total mixed ration with a roughage to concentrate ratio of 40:60 for 84 d. In vitro degradability was not affected by glycerine supplementation. Feeding behaviour and digestibility of DM, crude protein and fibre and production performance were similar among treatments. Ether extract digestibility was lower at the highest inclusion level. Glycerine level had no effect on ruminal pH, carcass characteristics and meat quality, except for subcutaneous fat thickness which was lower for lambs fed glycerine at 240 and 360 g/kg DM. Scores for unpleasant taste, unpleasant odour, succulence and softness of meat were not affected by dietary glycerine level. These data suggest that there are no adverse effects on carcass quality and performance when semi-purified glycerine is provided up to 360 g/kg DM in the diet of growing lambs fed a forage to concentrate ratio of 40:60. 相似文献

While diet-induced obesity has been exclusively attributed to increased caloric intake from fat, animals fed a high-fat diet (HFD) ad libitum (ad lib) eat frequently throughout day and night, disrupting the normal feeding cycle. To test whether obesity and metabolic diseases result from HFD or disruption of metabolic cycles, we subjected mice to either ad lib or time-restricted feeding (tRF) of a HFD for 8 hr per day. Mice under tRF consume equivalent calories from HFD as those with ad lib access yet are protected against obesity, hyperinsulinemia, hepatic steatosis, and inflammation and have improved motor coordination. The tRF regimen improved CREB, mTOR, and AMPK pathway function and oscillations of the circadian clock and their target genes' expression. These changes in catabolic and anabolic pathways altered liver metabolome and improved nutrient utilization and energy expenditure. We demonstrate in mice that tRF regimen is a nonpharmacological strategy against obesity and associated diseases. 相似文献

An in vivo study aiming to investigate the rumen methanogens community structure was conducted in Mandya sheep fed on straw and concentrate diet. The ruminal fluid samples were collected and processed for unravelling the rumen microbiota and methanogens diversity. Further, the daily enteric methane emission and methane yield was also quantified using the SF 6 tracer technique. Results indicated that the Bacteroidetes (~57%) and Firmicutes (25%) were two prominent affiliates of the bacterial community. Archaea represented about 2.5% of the ruminal microbiota. Methanobacteriales affiliated methanogens were the most prevalent in sheep rumen. The study inveterate that the ruminal archaea community in sheep is composed of 9 genera and 18 species. Methanobrevibacter represented the largest genus of the archaeome, while methylotrophs genera constituted only 13% of the community. Methanobrevibacter gottschalkii was the prominent methanogen, and Methaobrevibacter ruminantium distributed at a lower frequency (~2.5%). Among Methanomassiliicoccales, Group 12 sp. ISO4-H5 constituted the most considerable fraction (~11%). KEGG reference pathway for methane metabolism indicated the formation of methane through hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic pathways, whereas the acetoclastic pathway was not functional in sheep. The enteric methane emission and methane yield was 19.7 g/d and 20.8 g/kg DMI, respectively. Various species of Methanobrevibacter were differently correlated, and the distribution of hydrogenotrophic methanogens mainly explained the variability in methane yield between the individual sheep. It can be inferred from the study that the hydrogenotrophic methanogens dominate the rumen archaeal community in sheep and methylotrophic/aceticlastic methanogens represent a minor fraction of the community. Further studies are warranted for establishing the metabolic association between the prevalent hydrogenotrophs and methylotrophs to identify the key reaction for reducing methane emission. 相似文献

Energy digestibility in the growing pig increases with BW increase and may differ between breeds of pigs or between lines selected on criteria other than digestion. However, little is known about the variability in energy digestibility within a line or a breed of pigs, especially when fibrous diets are fed. For this purpose, 20 Large White castrated male growing pigs originating from four boars (five per boar), and three to four sows per boar, were fed a high dietary fibre (DF) diet (18% NDF) and measured over 10 consecutive weeks (30 to 95 kg BW range) for their apparent faecal energy, nitrogen and organic matter digestibility. Each week, faeces were totally collected over 5 days and the feed dry matter intake over the same days was recorded. All digestibility coefficients increased regularly ( P < 0.001) over the experimental periods or with BW increase (+0.6 point/10 kg BW increase for energy); this rate of increase was not affected by boar origin (no interaction; P > 0.05). The digestibility coefficients were affected by boar origin ( P < 0.005 for energy), with about 2 points for energy between the extremes (81.7% v. 79.5%), and there was no marked interaction between boar origin and period. These preliminary results suggest the possibility of selecting growing pigs for an increased digestive efficiency when fed high DF diets. 相似文献
